RESUMEN

The present study sought to examine the effect of 5 weeks of training with minimalist footwear on oxygen consumption during walking and running. Thirteen college-aged students (male n = 7, female n = 6, age: 21.7±1.4 years, height: 168.9±8.8 cm, weight: 70.4±15.8 kg, VO2max: 46.6±6.6 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) participated in the present investigation. The participants did not have experience with minimalist footwear. Participants underwent metabolic testing during walking (5.6 km·hr(-1)), light running (7.2 km·hr(-1)), and moderate running (9.6 km·hr(-1)). The participants completed this assessment barefoot, in running shoes, and in minimalist footwear in a randomized order. The participants underwent 5 weeks of training with the minimalist footwear. Afterwards, participants repeated the metabolic testing. Data was analyzed via repeated measures ANOVA. The analysis revealed a significant (F4,32= 7.576, [Formula: see text]=0.408, p ≤ 0.001) interaction effect (time × treatment × speed). During the initial assessment, the minimalist footwear condition resulted in greater oxygen consumption at 9.6 km·hr(-1) (p ≤ 0.05) compared to the barefoot condition, while the running shoe condition resulted in greater oxygen consumption than both the barefoot and minimalist condition at 7.2 and 9.6 km·hr(-1). At post-testing the minimalist footwear was not different at any speed compared to the barefoot condition (p> 0.12). This study suggests that initially minimalist footwear results in greater oxygen consumption than running barefoot, however; with utilization the oxygen consumption becomes similar.

CrossFit is becoming increasingly popular as a method to increase fitness and as a competitive sport in both the Unites States and Europe. However, little research on this mode of exercise has been performed to date. The purpose of the present investigation involving experienced CrossFit athletes and naïve healthy young men was to investigate the relationship of aerobic capacity and anaerobic power to performance in two representative CrossFit workouts: the first workout was 12 minutes in duration, and the second was based on the total time to complete the prescribed exercise. The participants were 32 healthy adult males, who were either naïve to CrossFit exercise or had competed in CrossFit competitions. Linear regression was undertaken to predict performance on the first workout (time) with age, group (naïve or CrossFit athlete), VO2max and anaerobic power, which were all significant predictors (p < 0.05) in the model. The second workout (repetitions), when examined similarly using regression, only resulted in CrossFit experience as a significant predictor (p < 0.05). The results of the study suggest that a history of participation in CrossFit competition is a key component of performance in CrossFit workouts which are representative of those performed in CrossFit, and that, in at least one these workouts, aerobic capacity and anaerobic power are associated with success.

Background: Ballet, epitomized by iconic seasonal performances such as "The Nutcracker," combines artistic expression with considerable physical demands. This study investigated the physiological and psychological responses of ballet dancers to the demands of intensive training and performance, with a specific focus on "The Nutcracker." Methods: Thirty- eight dancers volunteered for the study, including 6 youths (10.5 + 1.8 years, n = 6 female), 7 adolescents (15.4 + 1.1 years, n = 5 female), and 25 adults (21.1 + 2.1 years, n = 20 female). Employing an uncontrolled observational design, this pilot study tracked key biomarkers such as CK-MM for muscle damage and B-ALP for bone health, alongside psychological measures via PANAS-C/PANAS and DASS-21. Results: Significant findings included a post-performance reduction in cortisol and depression levels. Conclusion: These insights advocate for tailored strategies that address the multifaceted needs of dancers, acknowledging the intricate balance required to maintain peak performance and overall health within the demanding realm of professional ballet.

The hormonal and cardiovascular responses to atropine and low-intensity exercise were examined in 7 young men. Subjects completed 3 trials in a single blind crossover design. During the first trial (T1), subjects received 2.0 mg of atropine intramuscularly at rest. Subsequently in trial 2 (T2), subjects received a saline placebo before 90 minutes of intermittent exercise, and during trial 3 (T3), they received atropine before 90 min of intermittent exercise [3 x (25-minute cycle/5-minute rest) @ 40% VO2 peak]. Venous blood samples and physiological data were collected before, during, and post exercise. Growth hormone (GH) was significantly increased in T2 but unchanged in T1 and T3. Cortisol (CORT) was unchanged in T1 and T2, but in T3 significantly increased (p <0.05) from 45 to 90 minutes compared to T2. Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) was unaffected in all trials. Plasma prolactin (PRO) significantly increased in T3 from 45 to 90 minutes in comparison to T2. Norepinephrine (NE) was unaffected in T1, but significantly increased in both T2 and T3 (5 to 90 minutes). NE in T3 was also significantly higher compared to T2 (30 to 90 minutes). The heart rate (HR) and rate pressure product (RPP) significantly increased in all trials (15 to 90 minutes) and T3 was significantly elevated in comparison to T2. The administration of atropine before 90 minutes of low-intensity exercise significantly increased cortisol, prolactin, and norepinephrine, decreased growth hormone, and significantly increased cardiovascular stress.

The present study examined the association between serum insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations and cognitive function in a sample of healthy, fit older adults (age: 70.8±9.3 years, body mass index (BMI): 27.3±5.7). Participants reported to the laboratory and basic anthropometric data were collected, followed by a fasted blood draw to quantify serum IGF-1. Participants then underwent cognitive testing that included the Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE), Trail Making Test A and B, Ruff's 2 and 7 test of selective attention and Letter Number Sequencing. Results showed the participants were generally cognitively intact (MMSE 27.6±1.8). Significant partial correlations (controlled for age, gender and years of education) emerged between serum IGF-1 concentrations and the total (r=0.381, P=0.030) and longest trial (r=0.455, P=0.011) on Letter Number Sequencing. Similar partial correlations yielded significant relationships between serum IGF-1 and Ruff's Automatic Detection Errors (r=-0.495, P=0.006), Controlled Speed Errors (r=-0.598, P=0.002) and errors made on the Trial Making Test part B (r=-0.466, P=0.010). These findings suggest that fasting levels of serum IGF-1 are related to higher levels of cognitive performance in healthy older adults, including working memory, selective attention and executive function. Further work is needed to more clearly determine possible mechanisms.
