RESUMEN

Though rare amongst stomach neoplasms, primary gastric diffuse large B cell lymphoma is one of the commonest extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas. If left untreated, it can have a devastating progression and life-threatening consequences. We present the case of a successfully treated large antral ulcer confirmed to be large B cell lymphoma as evidenced by radiologic, endoscopic and histopathologic findings. A brief discussion about the types of gastric lymphoma, their Helicobacter pylori relation and therapeutic modalities follows.

RESUMEN

Periampullary cancers make up 5% of all gastrointestinal cancers. The complexity of the periampullary anatomy makes determination of the origin of some of these tumors difficult. However, advances in imaging have helped with diagnosis as well as defining the extent of the lesion and its potential resectability. For many of these tumors, surgery is the recommended treatment. However, endoscopic removal is being extended to different lesions with encouraging preliminary results. Improvements in overall prognosis for periampullary tumors will be limited until diagnosis can be established earlier in the course of the disease and adjuvant therapies become more effective.

RESUMEN

The frequent use of radiotherapy for abdominal and pelvic malignancies results in an increased risk of radiation enteritis. An increased understanding of the tissue response and the clinical features of radiation enteritis has led to advances in the prevention and management of this condition. Importantly, improvements in the delivery of radiotherapy, including techniques to reduce the amount of exposed small intestine in the radiation field, represent a critical strategy for prevention. Data indicate that radioprotectant agents have the potential to reduce intestinal mucosal injury and may be beneficial in reducing both acute and chronic side effects of radiotherapy.
