RESUMEN

Pro-B amino-terminal natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a diagnostic marker for heart failure (HF), a severe complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, its significance in CKD is not clear, as other factors, such as renal function, may also have an impact. Recent studies have shown that ghrelin treatment is effective in HF in the general population, but the impact of ghrelin on cardiac function in CKD patients is still unknown. Our study aimed to investigate the factors associated with NT-proBNP in pre-dialysis CKD patients and to evaluate the correlation between NT-proBNP and ghrelin and acyl-ghrelin, molecules determined using ELISA methods. In a cross-sectional observational study, we included 80 patients with pre-dialysis CKD, with a mean age of 68 years and 50% men. The median values for NT-proBNP were 351.8 pg/mL, for acyl ghrelin 16.39 pg/mL, and for ghrelin 543.32 pg/mL. NT-proBNP was correlated with ghrelin (p = 0.034, r = 0.24), acyl-ghrelin (p = 0.033, r = -0.24), estimated glomerular filtration rate (p = 0.027, r = -0.25), serum urea (p = 0.006, r = 0.31), and ferritin (p = 0.041, r = 0.28). In multivariate analysis, ghrelin (p = 0.040) and blood urea (p = 0.040) remained significant predictors for NT-proBNP levels. NT-proBNP was a significant predictor for acyl-ghrelin (p = 0.036). In conclusion, in pre-dialysis CKD patients, a high value of NT-proBNP was associated with a high value of total ghrelin and a low value of acyl-ghrelin.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is the final stage of chronic kidney disease. This study explored the association between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and ESRD. The interaction between genetic and environmental factors may also play a role in the development of ESRD. The study included 2392 ESRD patients who were awaiting renal transplantation. Blood samples were genotyped by SSOP and SSP-PCR methods. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that HLA-A*11 (p = 0.027), HLA-A*34 (p = 0.017), HLA-A*69 (p = 0.012), HLA-B*41 (p < 0.001), HLA-B*50 (p = 0.004), HLA-DRB1*10 (p = 0.027), and HLA-DRB1*14 (p = 0.004) were positively associated with ESRD (OR > 1); HLA-DRB1*07 (p < 0.001), HLA-DRB1*08 (p = 0.005), and HLA-DRB1*13 (p < 0.001) were protective against ESRD (OR < 1); and the three-locus haplotype HLA-A*02-B*41-DRB1*03, containing one susceptible allele, was strongly associated with ESRD (p < 0.001, OR = 3.15). In conclusion, this retrospective analysis of HLA typing in patients with ESRD of various etiologies suggests that molecular data on the HLA polymorphism should be collected in order to identify high-risk ESRD patients and to improve graft survival after kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) failure due to thrombosis is a major cause of morbidity in patients undergoing regular hemodialysis (HD). Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and their receptor (RAGE) might contribute to inflammation, neointimal hyperplasia, and thrombosis. RAGE has a C-truncated secretory receptor form, called soluble RAGE (sRAGE). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association of serum sRAGE with AVF failure due to thrombosis in HD patients. METHODS: Eighty-eight prevalent HD patients with functional AVF were included in the study. The presence of stenosis, clinical and laboratory data, and serum sRAGE was evaluated at inclusion. sRAGE concentration was measured by a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and stenosis was detected by ultrasound. Patients were prospectively followed up for 36 months. During this period, AVF failure (defined as the absence of blast or palpable thrill and impossible cannulation with 2 needles because of complete thrombosis) was noted and thrombosis was certified by ultrasound examination. RESULTS: During follow-up, 16 (18.18%) patients lost their vascular access due to thrombosis. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, sRAGE was a significant predictor of vascular access thrombosis (hazard ratio = 1.15, 95% confidence interval: 1.03-1.25, p = 0.012). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significantly lower AVF patency time in patients with sRAGE >16.78 ng/mL than those with sRAGE <16.78 ng/mL (p = 0.02). In the subgroup of patients with stenosis at baseline, sRAGE, serum albumin, obesity, and ischemic heart disease were associated with thrombosis. CONCLUSION: In our study, baseline, systemic sRAGE is associated with the occurrence of thrombosis of AVF, and this marker has a significant impact on AVF survival.

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy is probably the most undiagnosed but serious complication of diabetes. The main objectives were to assess the prevalence of peripheral and autonomic neuropathy in a population of diabetic patients, analyze it in a real-life outpatient unit scenario and determine the feasibility of performing SUDOSCAN tests together with widely used tests for neuropathy. A total of 33 patients were included in the study. Different scoring systems (the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score-TCNS; the Neuropathy Disability Score-NDS; and the Neuropathy Symptom Score-NSS) were applied to record diabetic neuropathy (DN), while the SUDOSCAN medical device was used to assess sudomotor function, detect diabetic autonomic neuropathy and screen for cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN). Fifteen (45.5%) patients had sudomotor dysfunction. The SUDOSCAN CAN risk score was positively correlated with the hands' electrochemical sweat conductance (ESC), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), the level of the glycated hemoglobin, as well as with the TCNS, NDS and NSS. Performing SUDOSCAN tests together with other tests for DN proved to be a feasible approach that could be used in daily clinical practice in order to screen for DN, as well as for the early screening of CAN, before more complex and time-consuming tests.

Portable, custom-made electronic dynamometry for the foot and ankle is a promising assessment method that enables foot and ankle muscle function to be established in healthy participants and those affected by chronic conditions. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) can alter foot and ankle muscle function. This study assessed ankle toque in participants with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and healthy participants, with the aim of developing an algorithm for optimizing the precision of data processing and interpretation of the results and to define a reference frame for ankle torque measurement in both healthy participants and those affected by DPN. This paper discloses the software chain and the signal processing methods used for voltage-torque conversion, filtering, offset detection and the muscle effort type identification, which further allowed for a primary statistical report. The full description of the signal processing methods will make our research reproducible. The applied algorithm for signal processing is proposed as a reference frame for ankle torque assessment when using a custom-made electronic dynamometer. While evaluating multiple measurements, our algorithm permits for a more detailed parametrization of the ankle torque results in healthy participants and those affected by DPN.

The negative effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the musculoskeletal system include symptoms of fatigue and sarcopenia. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of COVID-19 on foot muscle strength and evaluate the reproducibility of peak ankle torque measurements in time by using a custom-made electronic dynamometer. In this observational cohort study, we compare two groups of four participants, one exposed to COVID-19 throughout measurements and one unexposed. Peak ankle torque was measured using a portable custom-made electronic dynamometer. Ankle plantar flexor and dorsiflexor muscle strength was captured for both feet at different ankle angles prior and post COVID-19. Average peak torque demonstrated no significant statistical differences between initial and final moment for both groups (p = 0.945). An increase of 4.8%, p = 0.746 was obtained in the group with COVID-19 and a decrease of 1.3%, p = 0.953 was obtained in the group without COVID-19. Multivariate analysis demonstrated no significant differences between the two groups (p = 0.797). There was a very good test−retest reproducibility between the measurements in initial and final moments (ICC = 0.78, p < 0.001). In conclusion, peak torque variability is similar in both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 groups and the custom-made electronic dynamometer is a reproducible method for repetitive ankle peak torque measurements.

AIM: To evaluate the changes in quality of life (QOL), diabetic neuropathy (DN) and amputations over 4 years in patients with diabetes. METHODS: In 2012, 25,000 Romanian-translated Norfolk QOL-DN self-administered questionnaires were distributed during a cross-sectional study. Between March-December 2016, all patients identified from the 2012 cohort and enrolled in this follow-up study completed the Norfolk QOL-DN questionnaire; amputations suffered since 2012 were recorded. The influence of age and duration of diabetes (DD) on delta QOL scores (defined as the differences between 2012 and 2016 scores) and of sex, age, diabetes type, DD and declared DN on amputations was explored using multivariate linear and logistic regression, respectively. RESULTS: The mean (standard deviation) age of the 1865 participants was 60.6 (10.3) years. Mean total QOL-DN score increased from 2012 to 2016 by 4.39% (P = .079). Both DD (b = 0.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.21-0.57, P < .001) and age (b = 0.25, 95% CI 0.13-0.36, P < .001) were significantly correlated with total QOL-DN score. Delta total QOL was higher in patients whose statement about having DN changed since 2012. Over 4 years, 36 patients suffered amputations. Male sex (OR = 3.11, 95% CI 1.46-6.62, P = .003), physical functioning/large-fibre neuropathy subscale score (OR = 1.04, 95% CI 1.001-1.09, P = .047), autonomic neuropathy subscale score (OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.64-0.94, P = .011) and small-fibre neuropathy subscale score (OR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.05-1.40, P = .007) were significant predictors of amputations. Delta total QOL-DN score was 10 times higher in patients who suffered amputation(s) compared with their amputation-free counterparts. CONCLUSION: QOL deteriorates with age and DD. Norfolk QOL-DN subscale scores can predict amputations.

Custom-made dynamometry was shown to objectively analyze human muscle strength around the ankle joint with accuracy, easy portability and low costs. This paper describes the full method of calibration and measurement setup and the measurement procedure when capturing ankle torque for establishing reliability of a portable custom-built electronic dynamometer. After considering the load cell offset voltage, the pivotal position was determined, and calibration with loads followed. Linear regression was used for calculating the proportionality constant between torque and measured voltage. Digital means were used for data collection and processing. Four healthy consenting participants were enrolled in the study. Three consecutive maximum voluntary isometric contractions of five seconds each were registered for both feet during plantar flexion/dorsiflexion, and ankle torque was then calculated for three ankle inclinations. A calibration procedure resulted, comprising determination of the pivotal axis and pedal constant. Using the obtained data, a measurement procedure was proposed. Obtained contraction time graphs led to easier filtering of the results. When calculating the interclass correlation, the portable apparatus demonstrated to be reliable when measuring ankle torque. When a custom-made dynamometer was used for capturing ankle torque, accuracy of the method was assured by a rigorous calibration and measurement protocol elaboration.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to establish the diagnostic accuracy of high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7 Tesla (T) compared with that of stereomicroscopic autopsy for assessing first trimester fetuses. METHODS: Nine consecutive cases of first trimester fetuses resulting from spontaneous and therapeutic pregnancy termination were considered. The cases were divided into two groups according to gestational age: the Embryo Group with cases of nine to 10 gestational weeks (GWs) and the Fetus Group with cases of 13 GWs. The first group was scanned using three-dimensional fast imaging with steady state precession (3D FISP), and the second group was scanned using a two-dimensional (2D) turbo spin-echo high-resolution T2-weighted imaging (T2 WI) protocol. A radiologist and two embryologists interpreted the images. All cases were evaluated by invasive autopsy, with pathologist blinded to the imaging results. In total, the database included 270 items for evaluation (9 cases × 30 structures/case). RESULTS: The global agreement between fetal high-field virtopsy and microscopic or stereomicroscopic autopsy was evaluated using 225 evaluation items visible by both methods. Overall, using microscopic examination and stereomicroscopic autopsy as the gold standard, fetal high-field virtopsy had a sensitivity of 94.6% [95% CI, 87.2-98.3] and a specificity of 97.6% [95% CI, 95-98.8]. The positive predictive value (PPV) was 93% [95% CI, 85.7-96.6], and the negative predictive value (NPV) was 98.2% [95% CI, 95.7-99.4]. Cohen kappa coefficient of agreement was k = 0.92 [95% CI, 0.82-0.97], and the McNemar test showed p = 1.00. CONCLUSIONS: Virtual autopsy using high-field MRI at 7 T can be considered a safe alternative approach to stereomicroscopic autopsy for the assessment of fetal structural anomalies at the end of the first trimester of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontists consider facial growth pattern and oral function when developing a treatment plan. Less attention is given to the relationship between the maxillary posterior teeth and the maxillary sinus. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between the roots of the maxillary posterior teeth and the floor of the maxillary sinus. METHODS: Proximity of the roots to the maxillary sinus was scored for the left and right first and second premolars and molars (scores, 0-3). Mean scores per patient and per tooth type were calculated. The influences of age, sex, and facial biotype on mean scores per patient and tooth were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean scores per patient and the second molar scores were significantly lower in the normodivergent subjects compared with the hypodivergent subjects, and in the hypodivergent vs the hyperdivergent groups, indicating that the hypodivergent biotype had significantly fewer second molar roots into the sinus than the normodivergent and hyperdivergent biotypes. Age had no effect on mean score per patient, but in the hyperdivergent group, the second molar score increased with age, meaning that second molar roots tend to be closer to the sinus floor. CONCLUSIONS: In a young population (7-24 years), the positions of the apices of the maxillary second molar roots in relation to the maxillary sinus floor are associated with the facial biotype. In a hypodivergent biotype, the roots of the second molars are located farther from the sinus floor compared with the normodivergent and hyperdivergent facial patterns.

CONTEXT: Soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40l) can predict cardiovascular events (CVE) and mortality in haemodialysis (HD) patients (short-, medium-term follow-up studies). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between sCD40l and survival, CVE and mortality in HD patients on long-term follow-up. METHODS: We registered 46 HD patients' baseline characteristics, mortality and CVE for 108 months. RESULTS: SCD40l correlated positively with C-reactive protein, was higher in survivors, but had no impact on survival and was not predictive for CVE or CV mortality. CONCLUSION: The levels of sCD40l have no influence on survival or CVE and mortality in HD patients in a long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Visfatin is a proinflammatory molecule with possible actions on glucose metabolism. Interactions to bone metabolism and undercarboxylated osteocalcin (uOC) in diabetic patients (T2DP) with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) have not been reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 51 incident T2DP with DKD. History, laboratory evaluation, anthropometry, visfatin, uOC were obtained. Fifteen T2DP without DKD were used as controls. RESULTS: Visfatin was similar in DKD patients and controls: 1.56(0.97-3.03) versus 2.04(1.08-3.21) ng/mL, p = 0.51. In controls, visfatin positively correlated with diabetes duration (r = 0.63, p = 0.01) and negatively with uOC (r = -0.57, p = 0.03). In multivariate regression, diabetes duration remained significant (p = 0.01). In patients with DKD, visfatin was positively linked to C reactive protein (r = 0.27, p = 0.05), tricipital skin fold (TSF) (r = 0.41, p = 0.004) and leukocytes (r = 0.37, p = 0.01); the latter two parameters predicted visfatin in multivariate model (p = 0.001). In normoalbuminuric patients, visfatin was linked to body mass index (r = 0.32, p = 0.04), waist circumference (r = 0.42, p < 0.0001), LDL cholesterol (r = 0.33, p = 0.03), serum glucose (r = 0.36, p = 0.03) and glycated hemoglobin (r = 0.41, p = 0.007); there was a trend towards negative correlation to uOC (r = -0.28, p = 0.07); only glycaemia remained significant in multivariate analysis (p = 0.04). Albuminuric patients displayed a positive correlation of visfatin to waist to hip ratio (r = 0.41, p = 0.04) and leukocytes (r = 0.56, p = 0.04); the latter remained significant in multivariate regression (p = 0.005). CONCLUSION: The main determinant of visfatin in T2D patients with DKD is inflammation; in normoalbuminuric patients, a positive link to adiposity and altered glycemic control and a trend towards a negative correlation to uOC was observable; the latter relationship was evident in patients without DKD.

AIM: To assess the osteoprotegerin (OPG) relationship with cardiovascular complications in hemodialysis (HD) patients. METHODS: The study included 87 HD patients. Clinical characteristics, ankle-arm index (AAI), OPG and mineral markers levels were recorded. Arterial intimal calcification (AIC) and arterial medial calcification (AMC) were registered. RESULTS: OPG levels were increased in HD patients. Patients with AIC (p = 0.006)/ AMC (p = 0.01) had higher OPG levels. OPG did not have any relation with cardiovascular diseases. OPG correlated positively with age, increased HD vintage and inversely with albumin and AAI. OPG has not been a risk factor for VC or cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSION: OPG rising could be a reaction in defense to vascular aggression, because OPG was associated with VC, but not with vascular disease.

METHODS: ESAM, clinical and laboratory parameters were assessed in 73 DDP. Cardiovascular mortality was recorded in a 2 years' prospective observational study. RESULTS: Baseline ESAM was 17.1 (10.05-24.8) ng/ml and was correlated to phosphate (r = -0.42, p = 0.008), parathormone (r = -0.36, p = 0.048), albumin (r = -0.24, p = 0.048). ESAM significantly predicted cardiovascular death in univariate [HR = 1.03, 95% CI (1.006-1.054), p = 0.01] and multivariate [HR = 1.034, 95% CI (1.003-1.066), p = 0.03] Cox analysis. Time to cardiovascular death was shorter for patients with ESAM >12.44 ng/ml, p = 0.0045. CONCLUSION: ESAM is an independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality in DDP.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction is an important contributor to micro and macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and is reflected by increased systemic oxidative stress. Endothelial cell selective adhesion molecule (ESAM) influences endothelial function. We aimed to assess, for the first time to our knowledge, the relationship of soluble ESAM to markers of systemic oxidative stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ESAM, malondialdehyde (MDA) level and catalase activity were determined in 54 T2D patients and 43 controls. RESULTS: T2D patients had significantly higher ESAM when compared to controls (16.07 ± 5.77 µg/L versus 8.57 ± 5.28 µg/L, p < 0.0001), they also had higher MDA level (3.88 ± 1.50 µmol/L vs. 1.58 ± 0.72 µmol/L, p < 0.0001) and lower catalase activity (3.07 (2.63-3.44) U/mg vs. 8.72 (4.55-10.46) U/mg, p < 0.0001). In T2D patients ESAM was inversely related to catalase activity (r = -0.27, p = 0.04), relationship to MDA level was direct but not significant (r = 0.16, p = 0.24). MDA concentration correlated inversely to catalase activity (r = -0.28, p = 0.04). In multiple regression catalase activity remained significantly correlated to ESAM (p = 0.02) and MDA level was significantly related to glycated hemoglobin (p = 0.01); there was trend towards a positive correlation of MDA level to ESAM (p = 0.08). When patients were divided according to oxidative stress, those with increased oxidative stress (defined as MDA concentration > 2.98 µmol/L and catalase activity < 3.38 U/mg) had higher ESAM than the rest of the patients (17.99 ± 5.02 µg/L vs. 14.29 ± 5.94 µg/L p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: ESAM is higher in T2D than in controls and parallels oxidative stress: ESAM is inversely related to catalase activity and higher ESAM is found in T2D patients with increased oxidative stress.

Background/Objectives: Lower extremity amputations (LEAs) are a burdensome complication of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and/or arterial embolism and thrombosis (AET). We assessed the trends in PAD- and/or AET-related LEAs in Romania. Methods: This retrospective study (2015-2019) analyzed data on minor and major LEAs in hospitalized patients recorded in the National School for Public Health, Management, and Health Education database. The absolute numbers and incidences of LEAs were analyzed by diagnosis type, year, age, sex, and amputation level. Results: Of 38,590 vascular disease-related amputations recorded nationwide, 36,162 were in PAD and 2428 in AET patients. The average LEA incidence in the general population was 34.73 (minimum: 31.96 in 2015; maximum: 36.57 in 2019). The average incidence of major amputations, amputations above the knee, hip amputations, amputations below the knee, and minor amputations was 16.21 (15.62 in 2015; 16.84 in 2018), 13.76 (13.33 in 2015; 14.28 in 2018), 0.29 (0.22 in 2017; 0.35 in 2019), 2.15 (2.00 in 2015; 2.28 in 2019), and 18.52 (16.34 in 2015; 20.12 in 2019), respectively. Yearly PAD- and/or AET-related amputations were significantly higher in men versus women. The overall number of LEAs increased with age, particularly in patients ≥ 70 years. The increase in the total number of amputations was mainly due to a constant rise in minor amputations for both groups, regardless of gender. Conclusions: PAD- and/or AET-related LEAs in Romania increased from 2015 to 2019, with men having a greater incidence than women. Raising awareness and effective management strategies are needed to prevent LEAs.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The effects of vitamin K-dependent proteins in bone mineralization and vascular calcification and the implication of vitamin K epoxide reductase gene (VKORC1) 1173C>T polymorphism in warfarin sensitivity are well known. The main objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between VKORC1 1173C>T polymorphism, bone mineral density (BMD), and atherosclerosis (evaluated by intima-media thickness of the carotid artery and the presence of calcified plaques) in patients suspected to have osteoporosis or osteopenia and referred for BMD determination. METHODS: VKORC1 1173C>T polymorphism was evaluated in 239 consecutive patients referred by their physicians for BMD measurement (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at L2-L4 lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip). Ultrasonography of the carotid arteries was performed, intima-media thickness (IMT) was measured and the presence of atherosclerotic calcified plaques was recorded. RESULTS: In the patients with osteoporosis and osteopenia there was a higher frequency of TT genotype of VKORC1 1173C>T (P=0.04). The TT genotype was significantly more frequent in the osteoporotic group compared to the osteopenic group (P=0.01). The mean age and body mass index were lower in the patients with normal BMD and TT genotype (P=0.02, P=0.03). There was no correlation between the IMT and VKORC1 1173C>T genotype but the TT genotype had a significant association with the presence of calcified atherosclerotic plaques (P=0.05). This finding was not correlated with normal or pathologic BMD. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: VKORC1 1173C>T polymorphism (TT genotype) was associated with osteoporosis and calcified plaques in the carotid artery in patients referred for BMD measurement. Different mechanisms are probably involved in these associations. TT genotype may serve as a potential genetic marker for the risk of OP and ATS.

Diabetic foot ulcer non-reimbursed treatment depends on multiple factors, including the patient's buying behaviors. Factors affecting buying behaviors for the removable off-loading devices are not completely understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the patients' buying behaviors of the removable off-loading devices and their influence on the DFU treatment outcomes remotely monitored during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this prospective observational study, 45 patients affected by diabetic peripheral neuropathy, with/without peripheral arterial disease, with foot ulcers treated with removable devices were remotely monitored. Prefabricated removable cast walkers, insoles, and therapeutic footwear were the proposed off-loading methods. Patients affected by high blood pressure (p = 0.018), peripheral arterial disease (p = 0.029), past amputations (p = 0.018), and ulcer on the left foot (p = 0.007) bought removable cast walkers. Rural provenience (p = 0.011) and male (p = 0.034) did not buy a removable walker. The healing rate was 69.4%, while the median healing time was 20 weeks. High blood pressure negatively influenced healing time (p = 0.020). Patients who bought the most efficient treatment method for DFUs were females from urban provenience, with amputation in the past, with peripheral arterial disease, and with high blood pressure.

(1) Background: This retrospective Romanian study aimed to calculate the rate of, and comparison between, amputation and revascularisation for patients with either cardiovascular or diabetic comorbidities. (2) Materials: In our hospital-based database, we analysed patient-level data from a series of 61 hospitals for 2019, which covers 44.9% of the amputation patients for that year. The national database is compiled by the national houses of insurance and was used to follow amputations and revascularisations between 2016 and 2021. (3) Results: During the six-year period, the mean number of amputations and revascularisations was 72.4 per 100,000 inhabitants per year for both groups. In this period, a decline in open-surgical revascularisation was observed from 58.3% to 47.5% in all interventions but was not statistically significant (r = -0.20, p = 0.70). The mean age of patients with amputation (hospital-based database) was 67 years. Of these patients, only 5.1% underwent revascularisation in the same hospital prior to amputation. The most common comorbidities in those undergoing amputations were peripheral arterial disease (76.8%), diabetes (60.8%), and arterial hypertension (53.5%). Most amputations were undertaken by general surgeons (73.0%) and only a small number of patients were treated by vascular surgeons (17.4%). (4) Conclusions: The signal from our data indicates that Romanian patients probably have a high risk of amputation > 5 years earlier than Western European countries, such as Denmark, Finland, and Germany. The prevalence of revascularisations in Romania is 64% lower than in the Western European countries.
