RESUMEN

Strong surface (metal) enhanced fluorescence (SEF or MEF) is observed from clusters and single E coli bacteria cells labeled with Carbon nanodots (CDs), which were synthesized from date pits. The enhancement factor (EF) for SEF of the cell clusters were close to 50 for both 533 and 633 nm laser excitation wavelength. Those EFs are ratios of emission peak areas from CD labeled cell clusters on gold film to the peak areas of the same batch cell clusters on glass substrate. SEF with 633 nm excitation performed better than SEF with 532 nm excitation, achieving higher fluorescence intensity and much higher contrast. The contrast as high as 66 for cell clusters on gold film is a ratio of fluorescent emission peak area measured at the CD labeled cell clusters to the fluorescent peak area measured at unlabeled cell clusters (autofluorescence) on the same substrate. The contrast with the background (S/N) or the ratio of fluorescent peak area measured at bacteria cells to area measured at bare substrate was as high as 200. This report may pave a way for the broader application of surface enhanced fluorescence and especially metal enhanced fluorescence imaging of CD labeled cells and other biological objects. Graphical abstract Carbon dots, synthesized from dates, are used for direct staining of E coli cells. Emission fluorescent spectroscopy of those CD labelled cells on gold film and glass, demonstrated enhancement factor about 50 for emission on gold as compared to glass, Excitation at 633 nm appears far superior to excitation at 532 nm in terms of contrast (up to 67) with unlabeled cells /control due to decrease in auto fluorescence of cells. Maximum Signal to noise ratio is 200.

RESUMEN

This critical review deals with the applications of nanocatalysts in Suzuki coupling reactions, a field that has attracted immense interest in the chemical, materials and industrial communities. We intend to present a broad overview of nanocatalysts for Suzuki coupling reactions with an emphasis on their performance, stability and reusability. We begin the review with a discussion on the importance of Suzuki cross-coupling reactions, and we then discuss fundamental aspects of nanocatalysis, such as the effects of catalyst size and shape. Next, we turn to the core focus of this review: the synthesis, advantages and disadvantages of nanocatalysts for Suzuki coupling reactions. We begin with various nanocatalysts that are based on conventional supports, such as high surface silica, carbon nanotubes, polymers, metal oxides and double hydroxides. Thereafter, we reviewed nanocatalysts based on non-conventional supports, such as dendrimers, cyclodextrin and magnetic nanomaterials. Finally, we discuss nanocatalyst systems that are based on non-conventional media, i.e., fluorous media and ionic liquids, for use in Suzuki reactions. At the end of this review, we summarise the significance of nanocatalysts, their impacts on conventional catalysis and perspectives for further developments of Suzuki cross-coupling reactions (131 references).

RESUMEN

Automated Tape Placement (ATP) technology is one of the processes that is used for the production of the thermoplastic composite materials. The ATP process is complex, requiring multiple melting/crystallization cycles. In the current paper, laser-assisted ATP was used to manufacture two thermoplastic composites (IM7/PEEK and AS4/PA12). Those specimens were compared to specimens that were made of thermoset polymeric composites (IM7/8552) manufactured while using a standard autoclave cycle. In order assess the quality, void content, fibre distribution, and fibre misalignment were measured. After manufacturing, specimens from the three materials were assessed using optical microscopy and computed tomography (CT) scans. The results showed that, as compared to the thermoset composites, thermoplastics that are manufactured by the ATP have a higher amount of voids. On the other hand, manufacturing using the ATP showed an improvement in both the fibre distribution inside the matrix and the fibre misalignment.

RESUMEN

Nickel oxide and mixed-metal oxide structures were fabricated by using microwave irradiation in pure water. The nickel oxide self-assembled into unique rose-shaped nanostructures. These nickel oxide roses were studied by performing electron tomography with virtual cross-sections through the particles to understand their morphology from their interior to their surface. These materials exhibited promising performance as nanocatalysts for CO oxidation and in energy storage devices.

RESUMEN

Gold(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes (Au-NHC) with symmetric (bis-benzyl, -propyl and -mesityl substituents) and dissymmetric (mesityl and alkyl--benzyl or propyl--substituents) NHC ligands were synthesized and tested as catalysts for the addition of methanol to 3-hexyne, as a representative internal alkyne. While symmetric ones--bis-alkyl (propyl or benzyl) or bis-mesityl systems--displayed low activity, dissymmetric Au-NHC systems with one alkyl (benzyl or propyl) and one mesityl groups on the NHC unit were unexpectedly highly active with rates and turnover numbers up to 294,000 h(-1) and 800,000 mol.mol(Au)(-1).
