Cysticercus fasciolaris is a parasitic helminth that usually infects feline and canine mammal hosts. The intermediate hosts (rodents, occasionally lagomorphs, and humans) get infected by the consumption of feed or water contaminated with eggs. Rodents are vectors of disease and reservoirs of various zoonotic parasites. The current survey was aimed at determining endoparasitic helminth infections in rodents in central Morocco. Sampled rodents after specific identification were sacrificed and examined to identify parasitic helminths following ethical guidelines. Parasites were identified using morphological characteristics. A total of 197 specimens of rodents were collected and examined in this study. Ten rodent species were identified morphologically as Rattus rattus, R. norvegicus, Apodemus sylvaticus, Mus musculus, M. spretus, Mastomys erythroleucus, Meriones shawi, M. libycus, Gerbillus campestris, and Lemniscomys barbarus. The parasitological results showed that metacestode of tapeworms was found encysted in the liver, the larval stage of Taenia taeniaeformis develops large multinodular fibrosarcomas which envelope the tapeworm cysts in the liver of the R. rattus and R. norvegicus. Based on morphological data, the metacestode was identified as C. fasciolaris in 23 (23/80) R. rattus 2 (2/8) and R. norvegicus with a prevalence of 11.7 % and 1.0 %, respectively. Rodents are major vectors of human and domestic animal diseases worldwide, and therefore, important parasitic zoonotic agents (C. fasciolaris), which are transmitted by black rats (R. rattus) and brown rats (R. norvegicus), must be considered to prevent the infectivity of humans, domestic animals, and livestock such as cattle, sheep, and rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: Buthus species, including B paris, are classified as one of the most dangerous scorpion genera in Morocco, implicated in several cases of human death. Our objective is to characterize, for the first time, the toxicity and histopathologic and biochemical impacts of B paris venom. METHODS: We investigated the experimental pathophysiology of B paris venom by examining histologic changes in vital organs (heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs) and assessing biochemical enzymatic markers (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, urea, and creatinine) in mice injected subcutaneously with 2 doses of 400 and 450 mg·kg-1. RESULTS: Our results showed that the subcutaneous median lethal dose of B paris venom was around 0.52 mg·kg-1. Histologic findings revealed significant tissue damage in the previously mentioned vital organs, confirmed through biochemical analysis indicating impaired heart and liver functions. Additionally, an increase in urea, creatinine, and glucose levels occurred following B paris venom injection. CONCLUSION: Our findings show that B paris venom exhibits a high level of experimental toxicity. These results highlight the potentially lethal nature of this venom and emphasize the potential medical importance of this species.

Sand flies are the exclusive vectors of leishmaniasis. This group of parasitic diseases is a serious public health problem in Morocco. The aim of this study was to investigate the sand fly fauna, mainly the species composition, biodiversity, and seasonal activity of sand flies in El Hajeb in central Morocco. A total of six stations (Aït Naaman, Aït Rbaa, Aït Brahim, Ain Taoujdate, Sidi Mbarek, and Aït Oufella) were studied, five of which had recently recorded cases of leishmaniasis. Sand fly bimonthly captures were carried out using a sticky paper trap in different biotopes from March to December 2019. A total of 14590 adult sand flies were collected. The activity of the sand fly started in April and declined in November. The periods of high abundance were July, September, and November. Morphological identification of sand flies shows the presence of twelve species: Phlebotomus papatasi, P. longicuspis, P. perniciosus, P. sergenti, P. bergeroti, P. alexandri, P. dreyfussi, P. ariasi, Sergentomyia fallax, S. minuta, S. schwetzi, and S. antennata. The analysis showed that species belonging to the genus Phlebotomus were the most dominant (93.3%) and the risk periods were spread during the summer and autumn seasons. The present study provides for the first time information on the species of sand flies in El Hajeb. It, therefore, provides decision makers with an important tool to conduct vector control actions during peak periods in order to limit the transmission of leishmaniasis. The use of illicit substances continues to pose a substantial threat to global health, affecting millions of individuals annually. Evidence suggests the existence of a 'brain-gut axis' as the involving connection between the central nervous system and gut microbiome (GM). Dysbiosis of the GM has been associated with the pathogenesis of various chronic diseases, including metabolic, malignant, and inflammatory conditions. However, little is currently known about the involvement of this axis in modulating the GM in response to psychoactive substances. In this study, we investigated the effect of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, "Ecstasy")-dependence on the behavioral and biochemical responses, and the diversity and abundance of the gut microbiome in rats post-treated (or not) with aqueous extract of Anacyclus pyrethrum (AEAP), which has been reported to exhibit anticonvulsant activity. The dependency was validated using the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm, behavioral, and biochemical tests, while the gut microbiota was identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The CPP and behavioral tests confirmed the presence of MDMA withdrawal syndrome. Interestingly, treatment with AEAP led to a compositional shift in the GM compared to the MDMA-treated rats. Specifically, the AEAP group yielded a higher relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacter, while animals receiving MDMA had higher levels of E. coli. These findings suggest that A. pyrethrum therapy may directly modulate the gut microbiome, highlighting a potential target for regulating and treating substance use disorders.

Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) infection is transmitted by an infected female sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) of the subgenus Larroussius: Phlebotomus ariasi, Phlebotomus perniciosus, and Phlebotomus longicuspis in the Mediterranean basin. In Morocco, the vectorial role of P. ariasi was demonstrated, while that of P. longicuspis and P. perniciosus is not elucidated. In addition, Moroccan P. longicuspis and P. perniciosus populations present a higher morphologic and genetic variability. It was classified as P. perniciosus complex, including typical (PN) and atypical (PNA) morphs of P. perniciosus, P. longicuspis sensu stricto (LCss), and a sibling species of P. longicuspis (LCx). With the aim to study the ecological and epidemiological status of P. perniciosus complex species in Morocco, entomological surveys were carried out during three entomological seasons (2012, 2013, and 2014). We collected a total of 6298 specimens from 81 localities of northern, central, and southern Morocco. After describing the geographical distribution of P. perniciosus complex trough Morocco according to many variables (altitude, latitude, and longitude), we discuss the resulting epidemiological implications of its species. Our results highlight the geographical distribution of the two morphs of P. perniciosus through Morocco: PN is limited to the north, while PNA is widespread in northern, central, and southern Morocco. In terms of vectorial role, we hypothesize the potential involvement of PN, LCss, and LCx, at least, with P. ariasi, in the epidemiological cycle of L. infantum in Morocco.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Folate is crucial for the development of the fetal neurological system. Moroccan Health authorities promote Folic acid (FA) supplementation, before and during pregnancy, as a significant protection against fetal neural tube defects (NTDs). Thus, the current study aims to investigate the effect of FA supplementation guidelines on NTDs prevalence and to assess the health professionals' (HPs) knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding FA supplementation in Morocco. METHODS: To assess the prevalence of NTDs, epidemiological data were collected from local and regional medical facilities and enhanced through a literature study. In addition, an auto-administered questionnaire was implemented to evaluate KAP among HPs on the FA supplementation national program. RESULTS: The study results showed that from 2017 to 2023, the national prevalence rate of NTDs ranged from 4.26 to 21 per 10,000 live births, according to the region. Lack of information about FA supplementation is evident among HPs; while, 13.7% of the participants confused FA with vitamin B12; merely 50% recognized the significance of FA; and 11.9% had no idea which foods contained the most folate. Consequently, HPs' attitude and practice towards FA supplementation were deemed inadequate. Additionally, only 35.8% of respondents stated that they occasionally inquire about their patients' nutrition, 55.9% do not prescribe FA, and 44.1% are unwilling to report cases of NTDs. CONCLUSION: NTDs remain a serious public health problem in Morocco. Despite the significant incidence of these diseases, HPs' knowledge, attitudes and practices in terms of prevention present gaps and inadequacies. According to the results of this study, the preparation of specific training sessions and the start of preconception consultations constitute an urgent and important issue.

Background: Congenital malformations (CMs) are a group of structural or functional anomalies present at birth. These anomalies result in a high rate of mortality, morbidity, and disability in children. CMs are a major public health problem and place a heavy burden on healthcare systems in both developed and developing countries including Morocco, which has had a CMs surveillance system in place since 2011. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of CMs in Morocco. Methods: In this study, the epidemiology of CMs in Morocco was assessed retrospectively using the national surveillance system data gathered from case notification forms from 2017 to 2021. Results: The main results showed that the prevalence of CMs in Morocco is 3.91/1000 live births (LBs), and the minimum annual prevalence of CMs was reached in 2017 (3.10/1000 LBs) while the maximum annual prevalence was recorded in 2018 (4.55/1000 LBs). The majority of CMs are unspecified CMs (68.55%), neural tube defects (NTDs) account for (21.13%), and orofacial clefts (OFCs) account for (10.32%). In addition, the majority of CMs (61.73%) were from rural areas. According to region, the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region recorded the highest prevalence of CMs in Morocco, with 8.81/1000 LBs, while the lowest prevalence was recorded in the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region, with 2.02/1000 LB. Conclusions: This study reveals that the national prevalence of CMs is high and may be underestimated, as most of the CMS reported is unspecified. The use of a CM registry with detailed reporting of all CMs and the promotion of preventive measures are urgently recommended.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical infection caused by Leishmania parasite that affect human and animal. In Morocco, the cutaneous leishmaniasis has spread substantially to the new areas. The surveillance limited to active foci may underestimate the occurrence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). This study aims to investigate the local transmission of CL in rural districts of Youssoufia province, central Morocco, as a potential focus of CL. METHODS: For this purpose, parasitological, molecular and entomological investigations were carried out in this area. Data collection concerns potential vectors and human cases. Thus, 402 patients were examined for suspected leishmaniasis lesions in three localities of the province of Youssoufia. In these same localities, 983 sand flies were collected by CDC light traps and sticky paper during one-night per month during 6 months. These sand flies were all identified morphologically using the Moroccan identification key. RESULTS: The results showed that among the 25 skin lesions detected in a population of 402 individuals, 18 were confirmed by kDNA nested PCR as CL positive patients, of which only 25% were positive by direct examination. Leishmania tropica and Leishmania major were identified as causative agents of CL in the study area. Direct parasitological examination showed a low sensitivity (27.78%), especially for L. major, although its specificity was evaluated at 100%. Regarding entomological results, both genera of the Moroccan sand fly were collected in the study area: Genus/Phlebotomus (75.28%) and Sergentomyia (24.72%). Phlebotomus (P) papatasi, the proven vector of L. major, was the most abundant species (33.98%), followed by Paralongicollum sergenti (22.58%), the confirmed vector of L. tropica; while Sergentomyia (S) minuta, P. longicuspis, S. fallax and P. kazeruni were collected with, respectively, 17.60%, 16.99%, 7.12% and 1.73%. CONCLUSION: This study constitutes the first report of CL in the study areas, as well as the coexistence of L. tropica and L. major in these rural localities. Local transmission of CL is highly probable, as indicated by the prevalence of the two proven vectors of L. major and L. tropica. To control the spread of this disease, our results suggest the use of highly sensitive molecular methods to detect CL cases in potential leishmaniasis foci, which will improve surveillance.

Background & objective: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains one of the world's most serious health challenges. The development of therapeutic regimens has significantly increased survival and reduced HIV-associated morbidities in HIV-infected individuals. However, some people living with HIV may not respond as expected, resulting in treatment failure. The objective of this study is to identify and characterize, by immunological (T-cell CD4) and virological (viral load) parameters, HIV infected patients with therapeutic failure in Morocco. Methods: Prospective cross-sectional studies were conducted over a 5-years period (between January 2015 and December 2019) at the referral center of Ibn Zohr Hospital, Marrakech, Morocco. A total, of 1088 HIV-infected patients diagnosed by the rapid test (Immunochromatography) in addition to Western Blot analysis, was recruited. All patients were under the antiretroviral therapy (ART) for at least six months and followed every six months. Sociodemographic, clinical, and biological data as well as information on patient adherence were collected. Results: Out of 1088 patients, 92.46% were under treatment based on non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) including 26.20% first line first intention and 66.26% first line second intention, and 7.54% of patients on a protease inhibitor (PI) therapy. Regarding the immunological and virological status, 76% of HIV-infected patients had a CD4 count > 200 cells/µl and 24% had a CD4 count < 200 cells / µl, while 69.5% had an undetectable viral load and 30.05% had a detectable viral load (including 11.86% with viral load < 1000 copies / ml and 18.20% viral load > 1000 copies / ml) (P-values < 0.05). Conclusion: In our study, we showed a therapeutic failure rate of 18.2% in HIV-infected patients under treatment in Marrakech region. These failures were mainly related to poor adherence and low CD4+ rates at the initiation of treatment. We concluded that immunological monitoring alone is insufficient to predict virological suppression and therapeutic success. Consequently, we recommend the HIV plasma viral load test be accessible as a routine exam.

All around the world, scorpion envenomation represents a public health issue. In Morocco, it represents the first cause of poisoning. The aim of this review is to highlight the epidemiological, toxicological and physiopathological characteristics of scorpion stings and envenomation in Morocco as well as their management. According to the bibliography, the most areas affected by scorpion stings and envenomation are those in the center and south of Morocco. Lethality rate is more important in children than adult. Age, admission class, season, serum venom concentration, and the time elapsed between the scorpion sting and medical intervention are risk factors for a poor prognosis. Until now, we have only known the LD50 of 14 scorpion species from three genera: Androctonus, Buthus and Hottentota, and only 6 species, out of 61 moroccan scorpions, have been assessed for their venom toxicity on mice organs. The venom of harmful moroccan scorpions induces several histopathological changes in the myocardium, brain, liver, pulmonary alveoli, and kidneys in rats, as well as severe consequences in the lungs with intra-alveolar hemorrhage. There was also a significant increase in serum enzyme levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), as well as high levels of plasma albumin, creatine and glucose. In the absence of a specific treatment, the management of scorpion envenomation is based only on symptomatic therapy. We noted a widely use of traditional remedies. Despite the magnitude of the scorpion problem in Morocco, it remains understudied and continues to claim lives, particularly given the lack of an efficient etiological cure.

The province of Azilal is one of the most scorpion-infested areas in Morocco. The current study aims to investigate the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of scorpion envenomation in the Azilal province, as well as to contribute to the study of its scorpio-faunistic diversity. We examined clinical and epidemiological data from 5684 scorpion stings recorded between 2017 and 2021. Prospections on the ground were carried out in the study area. The species were identified using the taxonomic keys. Distribution maps of inventoried species have been created using SIG. 5684 scorpions stings were reported in the study area, with 18 cases of deaths. Most of the cases was reported in the summer especially at night (64%). A positive significant correlation was found between scorpion stings incidence and season (P < 0.005; r = 0.56). A positive correlation was found between scorpion stings incidence and mortality (r = 0.09). Pediatric mortality was higher compared to lethality in adults (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was found between the number of stung children (Age <15 years) and the number of patients presenting clinical signs of severe envenomation (Class III) (r = 0.40). The percentage of patients that use traditional remedies was significantly higher in the rural areas (P < 0.05). Most scorpion stings occurred in human habitat (54.5%) or in their neighbourhood (24.5%). Six species were identified in the study area. The findings of this study have highlighted the extent of scorpion envenomation and have elucidated certain characteristics of the scorpio-faunistic biodiversity in the Azilal province.

The number of newly described sandfly-borne phleboviruses has been steadily growing in recent years. Some phleboviruses are human pathogens, but their health relevance is largely uncharacterized. We aimed to investigate the circulation of these viruses in the Emilia-Romagna region where several have already been described. A total of 482 sandflies were collected in a site in Reggio Emilia in 2019 and 2020. Sandflies collected in 2020 were grouped in 21 pools with a maximum of 25 sandflies per pool, submitted to real time PCR, and isolated in Vero cell culture. Complete genome sequencing showed the isolation of a strain of a Ponticelli III virus. This virus, which belongs to the species Adana phlebovirus, differed in the M segment from the Ponticelli I and Ponticelli II viruses. Analysis performed on the genomic segments of the newly isolated virus compared with other phleboviruses highlighted a strong purifying selection in the L segments, and different substitution saturation, highest in the M segments. Future research should address the ecological processes driving the occurrence of these novel phleboviruses and their possible impact on public health.

Trihexyphenidyl (THP)-a synthetic anticholinergic medication used to manage parkinsonism and extrapyramidal symptoms-has gained significant clinical recognition. However, there is a critical gap in understanding its withdrawal effects. This study investigates the intricate interplay between gut microbiota and oxidative stress during THP withdrawal. Furthermore, it explores the therapeutic potential of Anacyclus pyrethrum (AEAP) for alleviating the associated adverse effects. This comprehensive research combines behavioral tests, biochemical analysis, gut microbiome assessment utilizing matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and oxidative stress measures. The results reveal that the chronic administration of THP leads to severe withdrawal syndrome, marked by heightened anxiety, depressive-like behaviors, increased cortisol levels, elevated oxidative stress, and gut dysbiosis. However, the administration of AEAP alongside THP shows a significant capacity to mitigate these deleterious effects. Co-treatment and post-treatment with AEAP increased bacterial density and diversity, promoting the proliferation of beneficial bacteria associated with improved gut health. Furthermore, AEAP administration reduced cortisol levels and exhibited potent antioxidant properties, effectively countering the THP-induced oxidative damage. This study highlights the withdrawal effects of THP and underscores the therapeutic potential of AEAP for managing these symptoms. The findings reveal its promising effects in alleviating behavioral and biochemical impairments, reducing oxidative stress, and restoring gut microbiota, which could significantly impact the clinical management of THP withdrawal and potentially extend to other substance withdrawal scenarios.

To improve professional communication and professionalization of these novice midwives, e-mentoring is proposed as a solution to consolidate support of the novice midwives. The aim of our research is to explore the feasibility and the acceptability of an e-mentoring professional coaching model of midwives in our geographic and professional context. Methods: an exploratory study targeted the Newly Recruited Midwives (NRMW) having less than two years of practice (N = 31) in northern Morocco. The model is inserted in a "Slack" free software where two mentors admitted the NRMW who consented to participate (N=21) in our study. The mentors ensured a synchronous and asynchronous assistance to the participants in their workplace through this platform. A questionnaire was self-administered by the participants in the first meeting. It assessed the professional skills of the participants and their coaching and training needs. The mentors shared documents and set activities in the channels of the platform. Public channels and forums have been launched. The model lasted from April 22 to May 22, 2019. Results: participation rate was 67.7% (21/31). The interactivity with the platform was uninterrupted through the period test. A high level of digital familiarization was noted. A proportion of 95% expressed the willingness to participate in an e-mentoring professional coaching model associated with a remote mentor permanently. Conclusion: the continuous interactivity of novice midwives with the e-mentoring model showed that it is feasible and acceptable in our context. Such model will solve the problems experienced by midwives in their workplace without delay or additive fees.

Bacterial meningitis is a diagnostic, therapeutic, and prophylactic emergency, particularly for children. In Morocco, meningitis remains a major public health challenge with lethality between 10% and 12% of cases. Our objective is to determine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of pediatric meningitis in central Morocco. A retrospective epidemiological study was carried out in the Department of Pediatric Emergencies of the Mother and Child Hospital of Marrakech in Morocco. Data were collected from patient files of Meningitis cases reported during the confinement period in March, April, and May of 2019 and 2020 respectively. Then, data were analyzed using SPSS software. The results showed a notification of 72 cases of suspected meningitis between March 2019 and March 2020 with dominance of boys (up to 70%) and age range of 1 month to 2 years (up to 34%). We noted a decrease in the number of patients hospitalized for suspected meningitis during COVID-19 pandemic. The final diagnosis of suspected meningitis was confirmed for 20% of the cases during the containment period against only 2.38% before the pandemic. This difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Our investigations confirm the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of bacterial meningitis of children in the study area, more investigations are needed to generalize and explain these results in Morocco.

Human visceral leishmaniasis has long been associated with canine leishmaniasis (CL). However, to date, there is no clear information on the status of the disease in dogs in Morocco that could be used by policymakers for the prevention of human cases. This study aims to assess the status of CL in Morocco and its risk factors through an exhaustive literature search. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4. The main results showed that the overall prevalence of CL in Morocco is 17% (95% CI: 0.12-0.22), caused by two strains of Leishmania parasite: Leishmania tropica and L. infantum. According to the region, the maximum prevalence was reported in the coastal provinces and in the central part of the country; while, the CL risk was higher in rural area (18% [95% CI: 0.14-0.23]) and at altitude above 1000 m (23% [95% CI: - 0.08-0.53]). Regarding the intrinsic factors, the prevalence of the disease increased with the age of the dog, (30% [95% CI - 0.09-0.68) and the risk was very high in clinically asymptomatic dogs (RR = 2.08 [95% CI: 1.15-3.76]). This study is the first in Morocco indicating the CL prevalence, its geographical distribution and detailing its risk factors. These results are needed to improve management strategies for the canine reservoir of leishmaniasis in Morocco and interrupt the local transmission cycle to humans. Northern Morocco is endemic for cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. Our entomological investigations aim to evaluate the risk of Leishmania transmission by determining the species composition, the density, and seasonal fluctuation of sand fly populations in endemic and nonendemic areas of leishmaniasis in Tetouan province (North-Western Morocco). Using Sticky-paper traps, 8,370 specimens were collected between May and November 2015 in two localities: peri-urban area of Tetouan city, where leishmaniasis is endemic and that of the Oued Laou village where no cases of leishmaniasis have been recorded. Six sand fly species were identified. The genus Phebotomus was represented by five species: Phlebotomus ariasi, Phlebotomus. longicuspis, Phlebotomus perniciosus, Phlebotomus kazeruni, and Phlebotomus sergenti, while the genus Sergentomyia was represented by only one species Sergentomyia minuta. Phlebotomus perniciosus was dominant in the nonendemic area (47%) while Phlebotomus sergenti was dominant in the endemic area (51%). The spatio-temporal distribution of sand fly populations is discussed according to biotic and abiotic variables. Seasonal fluctuation in sand fly density showed a bimodal pattern for the subgenus Larroussius and a unimodal pattern for the subgenus Paraphlebotomus in Tetouan city. But, in Oued Laou village, a unimodal density distribution for species of the Larroussius subgenus and a bimodal seasonal distribution for species of the subgenus Paraphlebotomus were identified. We affirm the coexistence, in the study area, of vectors of both cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, namely P. ariasi, P. longicuspis and P. perniciosus vectors of Leishmania infantum and P. sergenti vector of L. tropica. However, the geographic distribution, the specific abundance, and the activity reveal significant differences between endemic and nonendemic areas in the region.

Leishmaniasis is endemic in Morocco where both cutaneous and visceral forms coexist. To date, anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) determinants remain poorly investigated in Morocco. However, the disease risk factors identification is vital to determine the specific preventive process. In this aim, a case-control study was conducted in the main active ACL foci in central Morocco. Epidemiological data were extracted from bulletins, registers and annual reports of the regional direction of Health offices. The socioeconomic and environmental data were collected from epidemiological surveys, completed by a questionnaire intended for accessible positive population and control people selected from the cases' entourage. The study included 258 cases and 395 controls. Our results showed that many socioeconomic factors were associated with ACL in Morocco such as the rural habitation (OR = 4.163; 95% CI: 2.91-5.96), movement to endemic area (OR = 4.53; 95% CI: 3.03-6.77), provenance from leishmaniasis foci (in Essaouira focus OR = 5.34; 95% CI: 1.19-24.03) and poverty. In addition, environmental factors like proximity of vegetation (OR = 2.45; 95% CI: 1.14-5.25), poor domestic hygiene, particularly the absence of sewage system/waste management (OR = 1.63; 95% CI: 1.35-1.96), and presence of animals (OR = 2.67; 95% CI: 1.14-5.25) increase the risk of ACL in Morocco. Except for Matrimonial status (married people, OR = 4.11; 95% CI: 1.80-9.41), there is however no significant association of the disease with the other socio-demographic factors in the study area (p>0.05). These several risk factors must be taken in consideration to prevent this disease through multidisciplinary collaboration and community participation.

Scorpionism is a serious public health problem in several parts of the world including Morocco, where is considered as the first cause of intoxication. The Beni Mellal-Khenifra region is one of the most affected regions by this health problem. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological and faunistic characteristics of scorpionism in this area. A retrospective epidemiological study was conducted based on the data of 16,388 cases of scorpion stings recorded between 2016 and 2020. In the laboratory, the collected scorpions were determined morphologically based on the valid taxonomic keys. Statistical and descriptive analyses were performed using Excel 2016. Statistical significance was determined by P-value < 0.05. The study comprised 16,388 stung patients. The scorpion stings incidence was 123.58 cases/100,000 population/year and was significantly higher at Azilal province (217.69 cases/100,000 population/year). We found a positive correlation between the scorpion stings incidence and the percentage of the rural population (r = 0.72) and between the scorpion stings incidence and the number of harmful species found in each province (r = 0.69). The general lethality rate was on average of 0.30% with a higher rate in Fquih Ben Salah province (0.63%) followed by Azilal province (0.32%). Children have the highest lethality than adults (p < 0.05). In the study area, eight species were identified, belonging to the families Buthidae and Scorpionidae, including dangerous species. Scorpionism is a real health problem in the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region, which is a rich and diverse area of scorpion fauna. Our findings can be useful for better understanding the problem of scorpionism in this region in order to better control it.

Introduction: the pediatric emergency department is the first contact between the population and the hospital. Consequently, its dysfunction influences the quality of the general health care system. However, any successful policy must first be based on convincing results hence the need to better explore this service, diagnose the various dysfunctions, and survey disease trends to identify the needs of the local population. In this perspective, we propose to describe the epidemiological profile of children hospitalized at the emergency service of the Mother-Child hospital, University Hospital Centre Marrakech, and establish the prevalence table for childhood pathologies. Methods: a retrospective study was carried out in pediatric emergency services for 1658 hospitalized patients between March 2015 and December 2018. The collected data concerns mainly the socio-demographic, clinical profile, evolution status, mode of admission, and medical history. Results: the characterization of the studied population by sex and age showed a predominance of male with a sex ratio of 1.36, infants with 625 patients. Concerning the final diagnosis, the most frequent pathologies affected the respiratory system in 28% of cases, then the digestive system (11.3%), while infectious pathologies represented 10.7% of admissions. The death rate in the emergency department was 7.4%. Multivariate analysis of the data showed a statistically significant relationship between the final diagnosis (16 diseases by a system according to The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10)) and age, season, and weight. Thus, for the association between the digestive system diseases and weight (aOR=1.052, 95% CI= 1.019-1.086, p=0.02). While for the skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases and the autumn season (aOR=11.37, 95% CI= 1.272-101.777, p=0.03) and age has a negative significance for most diseases. Conclusion: the epidemiological profile study will allow knowledge of patient´s pathologies typology for a well-supported and better definition of needs.
