RESUMEN

Ancylostoma ceylanicum hookworms are zoonotic parasites that can infect humans. To detect autochthonous transmission, we analyzed human fecal samples collected in 2000. Multiparallel quantitative PCR detected infection in persons who had never traveled outside Ecuador. These data indicate human transmission of A. ceylanicum in the Americas, although endemicity remains unknown.

Avian haemosporidian from the genera Haemoproteus and Plasmodium are a diverse and widely distributed group of vector-borne blood parasites. These parasites can have negative effects on bird survival by influencing several aspects of their life cycle, causing different clinical signs and even death. Colombia has the widest range of bird richness throughout the globe; however, the associations between haemosporidian parasites and wild birds in different ecosystems remain poorly explored. Within this frame of reference, the objective of the present study was to identify and understand haemosporidian associated with resident and migratory wild birds and their lineages in northeast Orinoquia region, Colombia. Birds were captured in 8 localities and blood samples were collected, identifying the presence of haemosporidian parasites through morphological and molecular analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Blood samples from 233 wild birds (86 species) were analyzed for haemosporidian parasites. Sixteen individuals (6.9%) from 15 resident and migratory species were positive for Haemoproteus or Plasmodium. Fourteen haemosporidian lineages were identified, five of them reported for the first time. These new lineages are reported in four resident birds and one boreal migratory bird (Parkesia noveboracensis). This study is the first developed in the department of Arauca and contributes to the knowledge of haemosporidian lineages and their interaction with wild birds in the Colombian Orinoquia region and South America.

BACKGROUND: Auscultation for an extended period of time using a wearable stethoscope enables objective computerized analysis and longitudinal assessment of lung sounds. However, this auscultation method differs from bedside auscultation in that clinicians are not present to optimize the quality of auscultation. No prior studies have compared these two auscultation methods. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare intermittent auscultation using a conventional stethoscope with continuous auscultation using a wearable stethoscope for wheeze detection in patients who present with acute respiratory distress. METHODS: Patients presenting to the emergency department with acute respiratory distress were enrolled. The Strados Remote Electronic Stethoscope Platform (RESP™) was used for continuous auscultation, and intermittent auscultation was performed using a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared electronic stethoscope. A recording was made with an electronic stethoscope. Subsequently, continuous recording was made using RESP™, which continued until the patient was admitted or discharged from the emergency department. The number of captured wheezes in each recording was counted and validated by two board-certified physicians. RESULTS: From May 2018 to May 2019, 43 patients were enrolled in the study. Three patients were excluded from analysis due to incomplete audio recording data. The mean length of recording was 62.3 min for continuous auscultation and 0.7 min for intermittent auscultation; 77.5% (31 of 40) of intermittent recordings contained wheezes, in contrast to 85% (34 of 40) of continuous recordings. CONCLUSIONS: Extending the duration of auscultation using a wearable stethoscope in a noisy clinical environment showed comparable performance to standard of care intermittent auscultation in identifying patients who have wheezes.

Ion gel-based dielectrics have long been considered for enabling low-voltage operation in printed thin-film transistors (TFTs), but their compatibility with in-place printing (a streamlined, direct-write printing approach where devices never leave the printer mid- or post-process) remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate a simple and rapid 4-step in-place printing procedure for producing low-voltage electrolyte-gated carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-film transistors at low temperature (80 °C). This process consists of the use of polymer-wrapped CNT inks for printed channels, silver nanowire inks for printed electrodes, and imidazolium-based ion gel inks for printed gate dielectrics. We find that the efficacy of rinsing CNT films and printing an ion gel in-place is optimized using an elevated platen temperature (as opposed to external rinsing or post-process annealing), where resultant devices exhibited on/off-current ratios exceeding 103, mobilities exceeding 10 cm2V-1s-1, and gate hysteresis of only 0.1 V. Additionally, devices were tested under mechanical strain and long-term bias, showing exceptional flexibility and electrochemical stability over the course of 14-hour bias tests. The findings presented here widen the potential scope of print-in-place (PIP) devices and reveal new avenues of investigation for the improvement of bias stress stability in electrolyte-gated transistors.

The growing elderly population living independently demands remote systems for health monitoring. Falls are considered recurring fatal events and therefore have become a global health problem. Fall detection systems based on WiFi radio frequency signals still have limitations due to the difficulty of differentiating the features of a fall from other similar activities. Additionally, the antenna orientation has not been taking into account as an influencing factor of classification performance. Therefore, we present in this paper an analysis of the classification performance in relation to the antenna orientation and the effects related to polarization and radiation pattern. Furthermore, the implementation of a device-free fall detection platform to collect empirical data on falls is shown. The platform measures the Doppler spectrum of a probe signal to extract the Doppler signatures generated by human movement and whose features can be used to identify falling events. The system explores two antenna polarization: horizontal and vertical. The accuracy reached by horizontal polarization is 92% with a false negative rate of 8%. Vertical polarization achieved 50% accuracy and false negatives rate.

The COVID-19 crisis is among the most disruptive events in recent decades. Its profound consequences have garnered the interest of many studies in various disciplines, including consumer behavior, thereby warranting an effort to review and systematize the literature. Thus, this study systematizes the knowledge generated by 70 COVID-19 and consumer behavior studies in the Scopus database. It employs descriptive analysis, highlighting the importance of using quantitative methods and China and the US as research settings. Co-occurrence analysis further identified various thematic clusters among the studies. The input-process-output consumer behavior model guided the systematic review, covering several psychological characteristics and consumer behaviors. Accordingly, measures adopted by governments, technology, and social media stand out as external factors. However, revised marketing strategies have been oriented toward counteracting various consumer risks. Hence, given that technological and digital formats mark consumer behavior, firms must incorporate digital transformations in their process.

The performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands in the removal of micropollutants from a wastewater treatment plant effluent was evaluated at mesocosm level. Fifteen mesocosms were studied following a modified Latin Square experimental design with six additional points. Three variables at three levels were studied: porous media -PM- (river gravel, fine volcanic gravel and coarse volcanic gravel), macrophyte type -M- (Thypa latiffolia, Phragmites australis, and Cyperus papyrus) and hydraulic retention time -HRT- (1, 3 and 5 days). As response variables the removal percentages of the total organic load of the effluent (BOD5) and the loads of several micropollutants (caffeine, galaxolide, tonalide, alkylphenols and their monoethoxylates and diethoxylates, methyl dihydrojasmonate, sunscreen UV-15 and parsol) were used. The results showed that the systems remove between 70% and 75% of the organic load and that all the micropollutants were degraded at different extents, from 55% to 99%. The HRT was the variable that showed major effects on the treatment process, while M and PM showed no statistically significant differences in the used experimental conditions.

Relevant for various areas of human genetics, Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) are commonly used for testing close paternal relationships among individuals and populations, and for male lineage identification. However, even the widely used 17-loci Yfiler set cannot resolve individuals and populations completely. Here, 52 centers generated quality-controlled data of 13 rapidly mutating (RM) Y-STRs in 14,644 related and unrelated males from 111 worldwide populations. Strikingly, >99% of the 12,272 unrelated males were completely individualized. Haplotype diversity was extremely high (global: 0.9999985, regional: 0.99836-0.9999988). Haplotype sharing between populations was almost absent except for six (0.05%) of the 12,156 haplotypes. Haplotype sharing within populations was generally rare (0.8% nonunique haplotypes), significantly lower in urban (0.9%) than rural (2.1%) and highest in endogamous groups (14.3%). Analysis of molecular variance revealed 99.98% of variation within populations, 0.018% among populations within groups, and 0.002% among groups. Of the 2,372 newly and 156 previously typed male relative pairs, 29% were differentiated including 27% of the 2,378 father-son pairs. Relative to Yfiler, haplotype diversity was increased in 86% of the populations tested and overall male relative differentiation was raised by 23.5%. Our study demonstrates the value of RM Y-STRs in identifying and separating unrelated and related males and provides a reference database.

Falling events are a global health concern with short- and long-term physical and psychological implications, especially for the elderly population. This work aims to monitor human activity in an indoor environment and recognize falling events without requiring users to carry a device or sensor on their bodies. A sensing platform based on the transmission of a continuous wave (CW) radio-frequency (RF) probe signal was developed using general-purpose equipment. The CW probe signal is similar to the pilot subcarriers transmitted by commercial off-the-shelf WiFi devices. As a result, our methodology can easily be integrated into a joint radio sensing and communication scheme. The sensing process is carried out by analyzing the changes in phase, amplitude, and frequency that the probe signal suffers when it is reflected or scattered by static and moving bodies. These features are commonly extracted from the channel state information (CSI) of WiFi signals. However, CSI relies on complex data acquisition and channel estimation processes. Doppler radars have also been used to monitor human activity. While effective, a radar-based fall detection system requires dedicated hardware. In this paper, we follow an alternative method to characterize falling events on the basis of the Doppler signatures imprinted on the CW probe signal by a falling person. A multi-class deep learning framework for classification was conceived to differentiate falling events from other activities that can be performed in indoor environments. Two neural network models were implemented. The first is based on a long-short-term memory network (LSTM) and the second on a convolutional neural network (CNN). A series of experiments comprising 11 subjects were conducted to collect empirical data and test the system's performance. Falls were detected with an accuracy of 92.1% for the LSTM case, while for the CNN, an accuracy rate of 92.1% was obtained. The results demonstrate the viability of human fall detection based on a radio sensing system such as the one described in this paper.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary nodules in asymptomatic patients could represent latent pulmonary infections. Intestinal transplant (ITx) recipients with preexisting lung nodules might be at higher risk for pulmonary infections. However, data is scarce. METHODS: This retrospective study included adult patients who underwent ITx from May 2016 to May 2020. Chest computed tomography scans performed within 12 months before ITx were obtained to evaluate for preexisting pulmonary nodules. Screening for endemic mycoses, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, and latent tuberculosis infection performed within 12 months before ITx was obtained. We assessed for worsening pulmonary nodules, and fungal and mycobacterial infections during the first year post-transplant. Survival and graft loss at 1-year post-transplant was also assessed. RESULTS: Forty-four patients underwent ITx. Thirty-one had preexisting lung nodules. No invasive fungi were recorded in the pretransplant period and one individual had latent tuberculosis infection. In the post-transplant period, one individual developed probable invasive aspergillosis and had worsening nodular opacities, whereas one had disseminated histoplasmosis with stable lung nodules in chest computed tomography. No mycobacterial infections were documented. The cohort survival was 84% at 12 months after transplant. CONCLUSION: Preexisting pulmonary nodules were common in the cohort (71%), yet latent and active pulmonary infections were rare. Appearance of new or worsening pulmonary nodules does not appear to directly correlate with pulmonary infections in the post-transplant period. Routine chest computed tomography is not recommended in the pretransplant period, but follow-up is favored in patients with confirmed nodular opacities. Clinical monitoring is essential.

Monitoring wildlife populations to determine changing abundance is the basis for conservation strategies and interventions. Monitoring, however, is expensive, and we lack baseline data for countless species and landscapes around the globe. One solution is to utilize methods that leverage observations collected by everyday people. Humans are not only excellent sensors for diverse data, but possess a remarkable ability to process data and differentiate patterns with minimal training. Here, we explored the potential for people, including guides who work in tourism in southern Patagonia, to determine whether paired photographs of puma (Puma concolor puma) faces were the same individual, akin to a computer-led Siamese network analysis. Overall, participants performed well (average score of 92.2 %) and we detected no differences in local people versus those from the USA, or differences due to differential experience working with pumas. Based on these results, we built a historic capture-recapture dataset of individual pumas collected by local guides and report annual abundance for a portion of the Torres del Paine UNESCO Biosphere in southern Chile, an area lacking such data and of critical conservation for the species. Our results highlight the innate capabilities of human computers and their potential for contributing to wildlife surveys in novel ways to increase science capacity.

Introduction: Executive functions are a set of mental abilities that allow human beings to consciously regulate their behavior and, in a university setting, will have a significant impact on student success during professional training. Objective: To develop a scale to assess executive functions in a university setting. Method: Using a sample of 1,373 university students from Chile (663) and Ecuador (710) between 17 and 33 years old (Mage = 20.53, SD = 2.34). A study was carried out to analyze the psychometric properties of the instrument using a reliability and validity analysis for a scale that assesses executive functions: conscious monitoring of responsibilities, supervisory attentional system, conscious regulation of behavior, verification of behavior to learn, decision making, conscious regulation of emotions, and management of elements to solve tasks. Results: Adequate internal consistency parameters were found between α = 0.71 and 0.85. The seven executive functions proposed on the scale correlated proportionally between r = 0.42 and 0.62. In the confirmatory factor analysis, good fit indices were obtained in the model of the seven executive functions x2(413) = 1649.14, p = <0.001, CFI = 0.91, SRMR = 0.04 and RMSEA = 0.04. Discussion: The research carried out reaches its conclusion stating that the scale that was developed has the psychometric properties to assess executive functions in the Latin American setting. The results regarding previous research and the contribution made in the line of research of executive functions are discussed.

Older cancer patients are disproportionally affected by the Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) pandemic. A higher rate of death among the elderly and the potential for long-term disability have led to fear of contracting the virus in these patients. This fear can, paradoxically, cause delay in diagnosis and treatment that may lead to a poor outcome that could have been prevented. Thus, physicians should devise a policy that both supports the needs of older patients during cancer treatment, and serves to help them overcome their fear so they seek out to cancer diagnosis and treatment early. A combination of telemedicine and a holistic approach, involving prayers for older cancer patients with a high level of spirituality, may improve vaccination rates as well as quality of life during treatment. Collaboration between health care workers, social workers, faith-based leaders, and cancer survivors may be crucial to achieve this goal. Social media may be an important component, providing a means of sending the positive message to older cancer patients that chronological age is not an impediment to treatment.

This report presents a general overview of non-stoichiometric step-growth polymerizations (polycondensations). Three kinds of non-stoichiometric polycondensations are defined and discussed for a(2) + b(2) monomer combinations. Depending on the kinetic scenario and on the experimental conditions, the excess of one monomer either strongly reduces or strongly enhances the average degree of polymerization (DP) relative to a stoichiometric polycondensation under identical conditions. As a result, telechelic oligomers or extremely high molar mass polymers (DPs > 1000) may be formed. Stoichiometric imbalance has in all cases the consequence that cyclization is largely suppressed in early stages of a polycondensation. Finally, non- stoichiometric "a(2) + b(n) " polycondensations are discussed.

New azanucleosides were obtained using sulphated zirconia (ZS) as catalyst in the nucleophilic oxirane ring opening reaction of 1-allyl-3-(oxiran-2-ylmethyl) pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione and 1-allyl-5-methyl-3-(oxiran-2-ylmethyl)-pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione, with (S)-prolinol. The new templates were obtained with good yields following a route which exploits the reactivity of epoxides in the presence of sulphated zirconia as catalyst. The key step was carried out using microwave and solvent-free conditions and proceeds with high selectivity.

Introduction: The learning process of Mathematics is a challenge in Latin America; therefore, it is of vital importance to conduct actions that improve the performance in this science. Methods: This article is reporting on quasi-experimental research, where, through the use of Brain Gym, the objective is to improve: the definition of rational numbers, problem-solving ability, mathematical order relationships, and equivalent fractions. We worked with 67 students between 12 and 14 years old, organized into an experimental group (n = 35) and a control group (no participation group; n = 32). Results: We made pre and post-test measurements and found that the control group students improved in their problem-solving ability F(1,65) = 8.76, p = 0.04, η 2 = 0.12 and equivalent fractions F(1,65) = 4.54, p = 0.03, η 2 = 0.06. Discussion: In conclusion, the importance of applying innovative processes to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics can be affirmed. It is important to note that both the control and experimental groups improved their learning, however, the experimental group did so to a greater extent than the students in the control group, who received a traditional educational process, and they did learn, but not at the level of the experimental group.

The synthesis of four derivatives and the single-crystal X-ray structures of six 9-trifluoromethylxanthenediols (TFXdiols) I-VI are analyzed in this work. These compounds were obtained through superacid-catalyzed condensation of dihydroxybenzenes with 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone or 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone. The title molecules have a convex molecular structure due to their three fused rings of the xanthene moiety. We have found that, similar to resorcinol, the configuration of the hydroxyl groups is of great relevance for the crystal packing favoring either interactions above and below their molecular plane or lateral interactions that create layers. Considering that reports of TFXdiols are very scarce, our findings contribute to a better understanding of the molecular conformation and intermolecular interactions in their crystal structures. A similar analysis was extended to a fortuitous cocrystal obtained between 9-trifluoromethyl-9-(4'-fluorophenyl)-xanthenediol and 1,4-dihydroxybenzene, showing that these structures might be used to obtain cocrystals in the future.

Social distancing and security measures have contained the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the return to face-to-face activities is necessary for specific companies, and some higher education institutions have already done so. The various disorders that this new reality could generate have motivated the present study, which aims to analyze the emotional state of teachers and administrative staff. The instrument used was the abbreviated depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21), with an internal consistency index of 0.87. The methodology was based on applying a survey to 202 participants from Quito, Ecuador. The sample consisted of 97 men and 105 women aged between 23 and 59 years. A quantitative and cross-sectional design was used in this research. The results show that 40.1% of the respondents presented anxiety, 36.63% depression, and 38.61% stress between mild and highly severe categories. Additionally, when analyzing the depression, anxiety, and stress levels compared to productivity variables, we found that five disorders, i.e., fear, anxiety, over reactivity, skeletal muscle effects, and dysphoria, directly affect productivity variables, such as performing simple tasks, performing difficult tasks, the number of products made, and the number of products rejected. Thus, returning to face-to-face mode has affected the emotional state of many people, showing differences according to the job position, with anxiety being the highest self-identified incidence rate.

Additive manufacturing can enable the fabrication of batteries in nonconventional form factors, enabling higher practical energy density due to improved material packing efficiency of power sources in devices. Furthermore, energy density can be improved by transitioning from conventional Li-ion battery materials to lithium metal anodes and conversion cathodes. Iron disulfide (FeS2) is a prominent conversion cathode of commercial interest; however, the direct-ink-write (DIW) printing of FeS2 inks for custom-form battery applications has yet to be demonstrated or optimized. In this work, DIW printing of FeS2 inks is used to systematically investigate the impact of ink solid concentration on rheology, film shape retention on arbitrary surfaces, cathode morphology, and electrochemical cell performance. We find that cathodes with a ridged interface, produced from the filamentary extrusion of highly concentrated FeS2 inks (60-70% solids w/w%), exhibit optimal power, uniformity, and stability when cycled at higher rates (in excess of C/10). Meanwhile, cells with custom-form, wave-shaped electrodes (printed FeS2 cathodes and pressed lithium anodes) are demonstrated and shown to exhibit similar performance to comparable cells in planar configurations, demonstrating the feasibility of printing onto complex geometries. Overall, the DIW printing of FeS2 inks is shown to be a viable path toward the making of custom-form conversion lithium batteries. More broadly, ridging is found to optimize rate capability, a finding that may have a broad impact beyond FeS2 and syringe extrusion.

Wild birds have an important role as hosts of ticks infected by rickettsiae. However, the role of birds as reservoirs of tick-borne rickettsiae is unknown and poorly understood. This is particularly relevant in several tropical and subtropical areas, where migration influences the global spread of ectoparasites and pathogens of public health importance. This research aimed to detect and evaluate the exposure to spotted fever group rickettsiae in wild birds that could represent reservoirs in the Department of Arauca in the Colombian Orinoquia region. Sampling was conducted in three municipalities of the Department of Arauca (Colombia). Blood samples were collected from 255 birds and processed to obtain serum (n = 155) and DNA (n = 255) samples. The serum samples were processed for indirect immunofluorescence assays (IFA) for the detection of antibodies to Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia parkeri, Rickettsia amblyommatis, Rickettsia rhipicephali, and Rickettsia bellii. Additionally, we investigated rickettsiae DNA in blood samples by amplification of the citrate synthase gene (gltA). The IFA results revealed seropositivity in 97 samples from 54 species of resident and migratory birds. No sample was positive for rickettsial DNA. The presence of antibodies in 62.5% of the sera indicates previous exposure of these birds to rickettsiae. The null detection of rickettsiae in the blood of seropositive birds is possibly due to a short period of bacteremia. Experimental studies are required to improve our understanding of the role of wild birds as sources of rickettsial infections in ticks.
