RESUMEN

Ocean acidification affects species populations and biodiversity through direct negative effects on physiology and behaviour. The indirect effects of elevated CO2 are less well known and can sometimes be counterintuitive. Reproduction lies at the crux of species population replenishment, but we do not know how ocean acidification affects reproduction in the wild. Here, we use natural CO2 vents at a temperate rocky reef and show that even though ocean acidification acts as a direct stressor, it can indirectly increase energy budgets of fish to stimulate reproduction at no cost to physiological homeostasis. Female fish maintained energy levels by compensation: They reduced activity (foraging and aggression) to increase reproduction. In male fish, increased reproductive investment was linked to increased energy intake as mediated by intensified foraging on more abundant prey. Greater biomass of prey at the vents was linked to greater biomass of algae, as mediated by a fertilisation effect of elevated CO2 on primary production. Additionally, the abundance and aggression of paternal carers were elevated at the CO2 vents, which may further boost reproductive success. These positive indirect effects of elevated CO2 were only observed for the species of fish that was generalistic and competitively dominant, but not for 3 species of subordinate and more specialised fishes. Hence, species that capitalise on future resource enrichment can accelerate their reproduction and increase their populations, thereby altering species communities in a future ocean.

Climate change stressors are progressively simplifying biogenic habitats in the terrestrial and marine realms, and consequently altering the structure of associated species communities. Here, we used a volcanic CO2 seep in Papua New Guinea to test in situ if altered reef architecture due to ocean acidification reshuffles associated fish assemblages. We observed replacement of branching corals by massive corals at the seep, with simplified coral architectural complexity driving abundance declines between 60% and 86% for an assemblage of damselfishes associated with branching corals. An experimental test of habitat preference for a focal species indicated that acidification does not directly affect habitat selection behaviour, with changes in habitat structural complexity consequently appearing to be the stronger driver of assemblage reshuffling. Habitat health affected anti-predator behaviour, with P. moluccensis becoming less bold on dead branching corals relative to live branching corals, irrespective of ocean acidification. We conclude that coral reef fish assemblages are likely to be more sensitive to changes in habitat structure induced by increasing pCO2 than any direct effects on behaviour, indicating that changes in coral architecture and live cover may act as important mediators of reef fish community structures in a future ocean.

The study of states of arousal is key to understand the principles of consciousness. Yet, how different brain states emerge from the collective activity of brain regions remains unknown. Here, we studied the fMRI brain activity of monkeys during wakefulness and anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness. We showed that the coupling between each brain region and the rest of the cortex provides an efficient statistic to classify the two brain states. Based on this and other statistics, we estimated maximum entropy models to derive collective, macroscopic properties that quantify the system's capabilities to produce work, to contain information, and to transmit it, which were all maximized in the awake state. The differences in these properties were consistent with a phase transition from critical dynamics in the awake state to supercritical dynamics in the anesthetized state. Moreover, information-theoretic measures identified those parameters that impacted the most the network dynamics. We found that changes in the state of consciousness primarily depended on changes in network couplings of insular, cingulate, and parietal cortices. Our findings suggest that the brain state transition underlying the loss of consciousness is predominantly driven by the uncoupling of specific brain regions from the rest of the network.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the occupational factors associated with poor sleep quality in correctional officers (COs). METHOD: This is a cross-sectional study involving COs who work at four prison facilities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Logistic and linear regression models were used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and beta coefficient (ß) of poor sleep quality and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI), respectively. The analyses were adjusted for the main confounders. RESULTS: Considering the 256 male COs who participated in the study, 148 (57.8%) had poor sleep quality. In the adjusted analyses, poor sleep quality was associated with higher mental demands (OR = 3.10; 95% CI: 1.40-6.85), having suffered psychological violence at work (OR = 2.13; 95% CI: 1.04-4.35), agreeing with the following statement: "I think about work-related issues in my free time" (OR = 5.13; 95% CI: 1.26-20.78), feeling partially dissatisfied (OR = 2.26; 95% CI: 1.09-4.68) or dissatisfied with work (OR = 4.52; CI: 1.32-15.46) and willingness to find another job (OR = 3.20; 95% CI: 1.53-6.71). The occupational factors dissatisfaction with work (ß = 1.02; 95% CI: 0.05-1.98) and having health problems related to the work environment (ß = 0.32; 95% CI: 0.24-2.41) were also associated with higher scores on the PSQI. CONCLUSION: Poor quality of sleep is a highly frequent health problem among correctional officers, and this condition is associated with the perception of poor working conditions, professional dissatisfaction and the fact that such professionals think about work during their free time.

Coral-reef fishes are shifting their distributions poleward in response to human-mediated ocean warming; yet, the consequences for recipient temperate fish communities remain poorly understood. Behavioural modification is often the first response of species to environmental change, but we know little about how this might shape the ongoing colonisation by tropical fishes of temperate-latitude ecosystems under climate change. In a global hotspot of ocean warming (southeast Australia), we quantified 14 behavioural traits of invading tropical and local co-occurring temperate fishes at 10 sites across a 730 km latitudinal gradient as a proxy of species behavioural niche space in different climate ranges (subtropical, warm-temperate and cold-temperate). We found that tropical fishes (four species) modified their behavioural niches as well as increased their overall behavioural niche breadth in their novel temperate ranges where temperate species predominate, but maintained a moderate to high niche segregation with native temperate species across latitudinal range position. Temperate species (three co-occurring species) also modified their niches, but in contrast to tropical species, experienced an increased niche breadth towards subtropical ranges. Alterations to feeding and shoaling behaviours contributed most to niche modifications in tropical and temperate species, while behaviours related to alertness and escape from potential threats contributed least. We here show that at warmer and colder range edges where community structures are being reshuffled due to climate change, behavioural generalism and niche modification are potential mechanisms adopted by tropical range extenders and native temperate fishes to adjust to novel species interactions under climate change.

Negative interactions among species are a major force shaping natural communities and are predicted to strengthen as climate change intensifies. Similarly, positive interactions are anticipated to intensify and could buffer the consequences of climate-driven disturbances. We used in situ experiments at volcanic CO2 vents within a temperate rocky reef to show that ocean acidification can drive community reorganization through indirect and direct positive pathways. A keystone species, the algal-farming damselfish Parma alboscapularis, enhanced primary productivity through its weeding of algae whose productivity was also boosted by elevated CO2. The accelerated primary productivity was associated with increased densities of primary consumers (herbivorous invertebrates), which indirectly supported increased secondary consumers densities (predatory fish) (i.e. strengthening of bottom-up fuelling). However, this keystone species also reduced predatory fish densities through behavioural interference, releasing invertebrate prey from predation pressure and enabling a further boost in prey densities (i.e. weakening of top-down control). We uncover a novel mechanism where a keystone herbivore mediates bottom-up and top-down processes simultaneously to boost populations of a coexisting herbivore, resulting in altered food web interactions and predator populations under future ocean acidification.

RESUMEN

With the increasing need for and emergence of research on ocean and coastal issues in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ocean & Coastal Management journal presents this Special Issue with relevant articles within the scope of Coastal Management in times of COVID-19. This Special Issue received 43 tentative abstracts, 29 manuscripts were submitted, and finally, 12 articles were accepted. We provide a wide panorama of those twelve articles that integrate the special issue, covering a diverse range of topics regarding coastal management in the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven papers are studies that discuss environmental and social problems during this time in coastal zones, while the other five explore the use of technology to face COVID-19 on beaches. These twelve articles give some insights to improve coastal management, focused on tourist beaches, natural disasters, and fisheries. In sum, this special issue offers an organized compendium of high-level articles, as a contribution to evolve towards the better ocean and coastal management within the rapid emerging of publications about COVID-19.

Huanglongbing (HLB, Asian Citrus Greening), the most devastating disease of citrus has not been detected in southern Africa (Gottwald, 2010). HLB is associated with 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas), a phloem-limited bacterium vectored by Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), the Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP). African Citrus Greening, associated with 'Candidatus Liberibacter africanus' (CLaf) and its vector the African Citrus Triozid, Trioza erytreae (Del Guercio) (Hemiptera: Triozidae), are endemic to Africa, although not previously reported from Angola. African Greening is less severe than HLB, largely due to heat sensitivity of CLaf and its vector. Introduction of HLB into southern Africa would be devastating to citrus production in commercial and informal sectors. Concern was raised that CLas or ACP might hae inadvertently been introduced into Angola. In July 2019, a survey was conducted in two citrus nurseries in Luanda and Caxito and in different orchards on 7 farms surrounding Calulo and Quibala. Yellow sticky traps for insects were placed at the various localities and collected after c. 3 weeks. Breeding signs of T. erytreae (pit galls) were observed on citrus in some locations, but no insect vectors were detected on traps. Trees were inspected for signs and symptoms of citrus pests and diseases, particularly those that resemble HLB (foliar blotchy mottle, shoot chlorosis, vein yellowing and corking, lopsided fruit with aborted seeds and colour inversion) and its vectors (pit galls on leaves or waxy exudates). Leaves and shoots with suspect symptoms were sampled for laboratory analysis (43 samples). DNA was extracted from petiole and midrib tissue of leaves using a modified CTAB extraction protocol of Doyle and Doyle (1990). Real-time PCR was done using universal Liberibacter primers of Roberts et al. (2015), CLaf specific primers of Li et al. (2006) and CLas specific primers of Bao et al. (2019). All real-time PCR protocols indicated the presence of CLaf in 6 samples (Tab. S1). CLas or other citrus Liberibacter species were not detected. The presence of CLaf in sample 37 was confirmed by constructing a library (NEXTFLEX® DNA Sequencing Kit, PerkinElmer) with extracted DNA and performing high-throughput sequencing on an Ion Torrent™ S5™ platform (Central Analytical Facility, Stellenbosch University). To improve the quality of the reads, all 233,617,700 obtained reads were trimmed from the 3' end to a maximum length of 240 nt using Trimmomatic (Bolger et al. 2014). The high quality reads were mapped to the Citrus sinensis reference genome (NC_023046.1) using Bowtie 2.3.4 (Langmead and Salzberg 2012) to subtract all the reads that had high identity to the host plant (number of mismatches allowed in the seed was set to 1). The 14,691,369 unmapped reads (6.2% of original data) were mapped to the CLaf reference genome NZ_CP004021.1 using CLC Genomics Workbench 10.1.1 (Qiagen) (Length fraction = 0.8; Similarity fraction = 0.9). A CLaf consensus genome was generated that spanned 99.7% of the reference genome and the 163001 mapped reads had a 22.9 mean read coverage. The consensus sequence was 99.7% identical to NZ_CP004021.1 and was submitted to Genbank as accession: CP054879. The positive CLaf detections were from trees with typical HLB or African Citrus Greening symptoms, viz. lopsided fruit with green stylar ends, aborted seed and stained columella at base of fruit button; yellow shoots with leaves showing symptoms of blotchy mottle and vein yellowing and corking (Fig. S1) in a commercial citrus farm outside Calulo and included 2 'Ponkan' mandarin (C. reticulata), 2 Valencia and 1 'Navelina' tree (C. sinensis), and a citrus nursery in Luanda (1 lime tree; C. aurantifolia) (Tab. S1). This first report of CLaf in Angola highlights the need to prevent spread by removing infected trees and managing the insect vector, as well as the need for further surveys to determine the occurrence of African Greening and its vectors in other provinces and to confirm the absence of exotic citrus pests and diseases. The dosimetric dependence of ocular structures on eye size and shape was investigated within the standard ICRP Publication 116 irradiation geometries. A realistic transport geometry was constructed by inserting a scalable and deformable stylised eye model developed in our previous study within the head of the ICRP Publication 110 adult male reference computational phantom. Beam irradiations of external electrons, photons, and neutrons on this phantom were simulated using the Monte Carlo radiation transport code PHITS in the geometries of AP, RLAT, PA and ROT. Absorbed doses in ocular structures such as ciliary body, retina, and optic nerves were computed as well as that in lens. A clear dosimetric dependence of ocular structures on eye size and shape was observed for external electrons while only a small dependence was seen for external photons and neutrons. Difference of the tendency was attributed to their depth-dose distributions where spread dose distributions were created by photons and neutrons while more concentrated distributions were created by external electrons.

Future climate is forecast to drive bottom-up (resource driven) and top-down (consumer driven) change to food web dynamics and community structure. Yet, our predictive understanding of these changes is hampered by an over-reliance on simplified laboratory systems centred on single trophic levels. Using a large mesocosm experiment, we reveal how future ocean acidification and warming modify trophic linkages across a three-level food web: that is, primary (algae), secondary (herbivorous invertebrates) and tertiary (predatory fish) producers. Both elevated CO2 and elevated temperature boosted primary production. Under elevated CO2 , the enhanced bottom-up forcing propagated through all trophic levels. Elevated temperature, however, negated the benefits of elevated CO2 by stalling secondary production. This imbalance caused secondary producer populations to decline as elevated temperature drove predators to consume their prey more rapidly in the face of higher metabolic demand. Our findings demonstrate how anthropogenic CO2 can function as a resource that boosts productivity throughout food webs, and how warming can reverse this effect by acting as a stressor to trophic interactions. Understanding the shifting balance between the propagation of resource enrichment and its consumption across trophic levels provides a predictive understanding of future dynamics of stability and collapse in food webs and fisheries production.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Cannabidiol (CBD) is the main non-psychotropic component of the Cannabis sativa plant. REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by the loss of muscle atonia during REM sleep associated with nightmares and active behaviour during dreaming. We have described the effects of CBD in RBD symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. CASES SUMMARY: Four patients treated with CBD had prompt and substantial reduction in the frequency of RBD-related events without side effects. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: This case series indicates that CBD is able to control the symptoms of RBD.

A central challenge of neuroscience is to elucidate how brain function supports consciousness. Here, we combine the specificity of focal deep brain stimulation with fMRI coverage of the entire cortex, in awake and anaesthetised non-human primates. During propofol, sevoflurane, or ketamine anaesthesia, and subsequent restoration of responsiveness by electrical stimulation of the central thalamus, we investigate how loss of consciousness impacts distributed patterns of structure-function organisation across scales. We report that distributed brain activity under anaesthesia is increasingly constrained by brain structure across scales, coinciding with anaesthetic-induced collapse of multiple dimensions of hierarchical cortical organisation. These distributed signatures are observed across different anaesthetics, and they are reversed by electrical stimulation of the central thalamus, coinciding with recovery of behavioural markers of arousal. No such effects were observed upon stimulating the ventral lateral thalamus, demonstrating specificity. Overall, we identify consistent distributed signatures of consciousness that are orchestrated by specific thalamic nuclei.

INTRODUCTION: Minors have been scuba diving for decades, and while the initial concerns about potential long-term complications related to bone development appear to be unfounded, the incidence of scuba diving injuries among them has been poorly studied. METHODS: We reviewed 10,159 cases recorded in the DAN Medical Services call centre database from 2014 through 2016 and identified 149 cases of injured divers younger than 18 years. Records were analysed for case categorisation on the most common dive injuries. Information about demographics, level of training, risk factors, and relevant behavioural aspects were collected when available. RESULTS: While the most common reason for the call was to rule out decompression sickness, the majority of cases pertained to ear and sinus issues. However, 15% of the dive-related injuries involving minors had a final diagnosis of pulmonary barotrauma (PBt). While no reliable data is available on the incidence of PBt in adult divers, the authors' impression based on personal experience suggests that the number of cases of PBt in minors trends higher than in the general diving population. The narratives on some relevant records describe unmanageable levels of anxiety leading to panic. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results and narratives on these cases, it is reasonable to infer that psychological immaturity, suboptimal management of adverse situations, and inadequate supervision might have led to severe injuries among these minor divers.

Aquifers have significant social, economic, and ecological importance. They supply 30 % of the freshwater for human consumption worldwide, including agricultural and industrial use. Despite aquifers' importance, the relationships between aquifer categories and their inhabiting microbial communities are still unknown. Characterizing variations within microbial communities' function and taxonomy structure at different aquifers could give a panoramic view of patterns that may enable the detection and prediction of environmental impact caused by multiple sources. Using publicly available shotgun metagenomic datasets, we examined whether soil properties, land use, and climate variables would have a more significant influence on the taxonomy and functional structure of the microbial communities than the ecological landscapes of the aquifer (i.e., Karst, Porous, Saline, Geyser, and Porous Contaminated). We found that these categories are stronger predictors of microbial communities' structure than geographical localization. In addition, our results show that microbial richness and dominance patterns are the opposite of those found in multicellular life, where extreme habitats harbour richer functional and taxonomic microbial communities. We found that low-abundant and recently described candidate taxa, such as the chemolithoautotrophic genus Candidatus Altiarcheum and the Candidate phylum Parcubacteria, are the main contributors to aquifer microbial communities' dissimilarities. Genes related to gram-negative bacteria proteins, cell wall structures, and phage activity were the primary contributors to aquifer microbial communities' dissimilarities among the aquifers' ecological landscapes. The results reported in the present study highlight the utility of using ecological landscapes for investigating aquifer microbial communities. In addition, we suggest that functions played by recently described and low abundant bacterial groups need further investigation once they might affect water quality, geochemical cycles, and the effects of anthropogenic disturbances such as pollution and climatic events on aquifers.

ABSTRACT: Organ dosimetry data of the atomic bomb survivors and the resulting cancer risk models derived from these data are currently assessed within the DS02 dosimetry system developed through the Joint US-Japan Dosimetry Working Group. In DS02, the anatomical survivor models are limited to three hermaphroditic stylized phantoms-an adult (55 kg), a child (19.8 kg), and an infant (9.7 kg)-that were originally designed for the preceding DS86 dosimetry system. As such, organ doses needed for assessment of in-utero cancer risks to the fetus have continued to rely upon the use of the uterine wall in the adult non-pregnant stylized phantom as the dose surrogate for all fetal organs regardless of gestational age. To address these limitations, the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) Working Group on Organ Dose (WGOD) has established the J45 (Japan 1945) series of high-resolution voxel phantoms, which were derived from the UF/NCI series of hybrid phantoms and scaled to match mid-1940s Japanese body morphometries. The series includes male and female phantoms-newborn to adult-and four pregnant female phantoms at gestational ages of 8, 15, 25, and 38 wk post-conception. In previous studies, we have reported organ dose differences between those reported by the DS02 system and those computed by the WGOD using 3D Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations of atomic bomb gamma-ray and neutron fields for the J45 phantoms series in their traditional "standing" posture, with some variations in their facing direction relative to the bomb hypocenter. In this present study, we present the J45 pregnant female phantoms in both a "kneeling" and "lying" posture and assess the dosimetric impact of these more anatomically realistic survivor models in comparison to current organ doses given by the DS02 system. For the kneeling phantoms facing the bomb hypocenter, organ doses from bomb source photon spectra were shown to be overestimated by the DS02 system by up to a factor of 1.45 for certain fetal organs and up to a factor of 1.17 for maternal organs. For lying phantoms with their feet in the direction of the hypocenter, fetal organ doses from bomb source photon spectra were underestimated by the DS02 system by factors as low as 0.77, while maternal organ doses were overestimated by up to a factor of 1.38. Organs doses from neutron contributions to the radiation fields exhibited an increasing overestimation by the DS02 stylized phantoms as gestational age increased. These discrepancies are most evident in fetal organs that are more posterior within the mother's womb, such as the fetal brain. Further analysis revealed that comparison of these postures to the original standing posture indicate significant dose differences for both maternal and fetal organ doses depending on the type of irradiation. Results from this study highlight the degree to which the existing DS02 system can differ from organ dosimetry based upon 3D radiation transport simulations using more anatomically realistic models of those survivors exposed during pregnancy.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced lymphopenia has gained attention recently as the result of its correlation with survival in a range of indications, particularly when combining radiation therapy (RT) with immunotherapy. The purpose of this study is to use a dynamic blood circulation model combined with observed lymphocyte depletion in patients to derive the in vivo radiosensitivity of circulating lymphocytes and study the effect of RT delivery parameters. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We assembled a cohort of 17 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma treated with proton RT alone in 15 fractions (fx) using conventional dose rates (beam-on time [BOT], 120 seconds) for whom weekly absolute lymphocyte counts (ALCs) during RT and follow-up were available. We used HEDOS, a time-dependent, whole-body, blood flow computational framework, in combination with explicit liver blood flow modeling, to calculate the dose volume histograms for circulating lymphocytes for changing BOTs (1 second-300 seconds) and fractionations (5 fx, 15 fx). From this, we used the linear cell survival model and an exponential model to determine patient-specific lymphocyte radiation sensitivity, α, and recovery, σ, respectively. RESULTS: The in vivo-derived patient-specific α had a median of 0.65 Gy-1 (range, 0.30-1.38). Decreasing BOT to 1 second led to an increased average end-of-treatment ALC of 27.5%, increasing to 60.3% when combined with the 5-fx regimen. Decreasing to 5 fx at the conventional dose rate led to an increase of 17.0% on average. The benefit of both increasing dose rate and reducing the number of fractions was patient specificࣧpatients with highly sensitive lymphocytes benefited most from decreasing BOT, whereas patients with slow lymphocyte recovery benefited most from the shorter fractionation regimen. CONCLUSIONS: We observed that increasing dose rate at the same fractionation reduced ALC depletion more significantly than reducing the number of fractions. High-dose-rates led to an increased sparing of lymphocytes when shortening the fractionation regimen, particularly for patients with radiosensitive lymphocytes at elevated risk.

Objective. Phantoms of the International Commission on Radiological Protection provide a framework for standardized dosimetry. The modeling of internal blood vessels-essential to tracking circulating blood cells exposed during external beam radiotherapy and to account for radiopharmaceutical decays while still in blood circulation-is, however, limited to the major inter-organ arteries and veins. Intra-organ blood is accounted for only through the assignment of a homogeneous mixture of parenchyma and blood [single-region (SR) organs]. Our goal was to develop explicit dual-region (DR) models of intra-organ blood vasculature of the adult male brain (AMB) and adult female brain (AFB).Approach. A total of 4000 vessels were created amongst 26 vascular trees. The AMB and AFB models were then tetrahedralized for coupling to the PHITS radiation transport code. Absorbed fractions were computed for monoenergetic alpha particles, electrons, positrons, and photons for both decay sites within the blood vessels and for tissues outside these vessels. RadionuclideS-values were computed for 22 and 10 radionuclides commonly employed in radiopharmaceutical therapy and nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging, respectively.Main results. For radionuclide decays, values ofS(brain tissue ← brain blood) assessed in the traditional manner (SR) were higher than those computed using our DR models by factors of 1.92, 1.49, and 1.57 for therapeutic alpha-emitters, beta-emitters, and Auger electron-emitters, respectively in the AFB and by factors of 1.65, 1.37, and 1.42 for these same radionuclide categories in the AMB. Corresponding ratios of SR and DR values ofS(brain tissue ← brain blood) were 1.34 (AFB) and 1.26 (AMB) for four SPECT radionuclides, and were 1.32 (AFB) and 1.24 (AMB) for six common PET radionuclides.Significance. The methodology employed in this study can be explored in other organs of the body for proper accounting of blood self-dose for that fraction of the radiopharmaceutical still in general circulation.

Purpose. Lymphopenia is a common side effect in patients treated with radiotherapy, potentially caused by direct cell killing of circulating lymphocytes in the blood. To investigate this hypothesis, a method to assess dose to circulating lymphocytes is needed.Methods. A stochastic model to simulate systemic blood flow in the human body was developed based on a previously designed compartment model. Blood dose was obtained by superimposing the spatiotemporal distribution of blood particles with a time-varying dose rate field, and used as a surrogate for dose to circulating lymphocytes. We discuss relevant theory on compartmental modeling and how to combine it with models of explicit organ vasculature.Results. A general workflow was established which can be used for any anatomical site. Stochastic compartments can be replaced by explicit models of organ vasculatures for improved spatial resolution, and tumor compartments can be dynamically assigned. Generating a patient-specific blood flow distribution takes about one minute, fast enough to investigate the effect of varying treatment parameters such as the dose rate. Furthermore, the anatomical structures contributing most to the overall blood dose can be identified, which could potentially be used for lymphocyte-sparing treatment planning.Conclusion. The ability to report the blood dose distribution during radiotherapy is imperative to test and act upon the current paradigm that radiation-induced lymphopenia is caused by direct cell killing of lymphocytes in the blood. We have built a general model that can do so for various treatment sites. The presented framework is publicly available athttp://github.com/mghro/hedos.

The emergence and continued geographic expansion of arboviruses and the growing number of infected people have highlighted the need to develop and improve multiplex methods for rapid and specific detection of pathogens. Sequencing technologies are promising tools that can help in the laboratory diagnosis of conditions that share common symptoms, such as pathologies caused by emerging arboviruses. In this study, we integrated nanopore sequencing and the advantages of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to develop a multiplex RT-PCR protocol for the detection of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and several orthoflaviviruses (such as dengue (Orthoflavivirus dengue), Zika (Orthoflavivirus zikaense), yellow fever (Orthoflavivirus flavi), and West Nile (Orthoflavivirus nilense) viruses) in a single reaction, which provides data for sequence-based differentiation of arbovirus lineages.

Recent allostatic-interoceptive explanations using predictive coding models propose that efficient regulation of the body's internal milieu is necessary to correctly anticipate environmental needs. We review this framework applied to understanding behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) considering both allostatic overload and interoceptive deficits. First, we show how this framework could explain divergent deficits in bvFTD (cognitive impairments, behavioral maladjustment, brain atrophy, fronto-insular-temporal network atypicality, aberrant interoceptive electrophysiological activity, and autonomic disbalance). We develop a set of theory-driven predictions based on levels of allostatic interoception associated with bvFTD phenomenology and related physiopathological mechanisms. This approach may help further understand the disparate behavioral and physiopathological dysregulations of bvFTD, suggesting targeted interventions and strengthening clinical models of neurological and psychiatric disorders.
