Maxillary resection prosthesis fabricated from urethane dimethacrylate for a patient with polymethyl methacrylate allergy: A clinical report.

The surgical resection of malignant tumors often leads to severe bone and soft-tissue deficits that can result in difficulty swallowing, impaired speech, and facial disfigurement. Prosthetic rehabilitation of these patients becomes an integral part of the patient's recovery and allows for improvement in quality of life. This clinical report describes a patient who underwent an anterior maxillectomy secondary to squamous cell carcinoma. After the insertion of a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) interim resection prosthesis, the patient developed a severe allergic stomatitis reaction in the oral cavity and oropharynx. By using the patch test approach, true PMMA allergy was diagnosed along with a suitable PMMA replacement for the prosthesis. A subsequent prosthesis was fabricated from urethane dimethacrylate in place of the standard PMMA.

An implant-retained auricular prosthesis complicated by a modified temporal bone resection.

A patient underwent a modified temporal bone resection and total auriculectomy to remove a sebaceous carcinoma arising from the tragus of the right auricle that extended into the external auditory meatus. Because the tumor extended into the temporal bone, the osseous sites originally selected for immediate placement of the craniofacial implants were resected and no longer available. Subsequently, after an appropriate period of healing, implants were placed into the residual temporal bone, considerably more superior and posterior to the external auditory meatus such that they emerged through hair-bearing skin. The purpose of this report was to describe the fabrication of an implant-retained auricular prosthesis with implants in suboptimal positions. Challenges included optimization of the stability and retention of the prosthesis, effectively managing the prosthetic space without compromising the esthetic outcome, providing adequate hygiene access for the implant connecting bar, and maintaining the health of the peri-implant tissues when the implant emerged through hair-bearing skin.

Fabrication of a Toe Prosthesis with Paintable and Interchangeable Nail: A Clinical Report.

This report describes the treatment of a 44-year-old woman with history of left great toe amputation due to surgical complications from metatarsophalangeal joint fusion procedure. The fabrication of a prosthetic great toe with interchangeable nail that is paintable is described in detail. This prosthetic demonstrates that the clinical and laboratory techniques used in fabrication of traditional maxillofacial prosthetics can be adapted for the fabrication of somatic prosthetics to enhance quality of life.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw - prevention and treatment strategies for oral health professionals.

Patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma and metastatic breast, prostate and renal cancers have a better opportunity for longer survival due to a myriad of chemotherapies regimens that attempt to manage disease progression while decreasing treatment-related side effects. Osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) is a known side effect of bisphosphonates and other anti-neoplastic drugs. This complication can lead to oncologic treatment interruptions as well as diminished quality of life. Most recommendations for treatment of ONJ are based on position papers and case reports, while evidence-based treatment paradigms are lacking. With cancer survivorship on the rise, long-term chemotherapeutic side effects are becoming more prevalent and attention to untoward oral complications cannot be understated. In this review, the accepted recommendations for dental clearance prior to head and neck chemo-radiation therapy are put forth as a means of possibly preventing and treating drug induced ONJ.
