RESUMEN

Perchlorate (ClO4-) is a persistent water soluble oxyanion of growing environmental interest. Perchlorate contamination can be a health concern due to its ability to disrupt the use of iodine by the thyroid gland and the production of metabolic hormones. Its widespread presence in surface water and groundwater makes the aquatic environment a potential source of perchlorate exposure. However, the amount of published data on perchlorate origins and water contamination worldwide remains spatially limited. Here, we present an overview of research on perchlorate origins and occurrences in water, and the methodology to distinguish the different perchlorate sources based on isotope analysis. All published ranges of isotopic content in perchlorate from different sources are presented, including naturally occurring and man-made perchlorate source types, as well as the effects of isotope fractionation that accompanies biodegradation processes. An example of a case study in France is presented to emphasize the need for further research on this topic.

Documenting the extent of soil contamination by Toxoplasma gondii oocysts is a key issue to prevent the worldwide infection caused by this protozoan. Our aim was to improve the practicability and sensitivity of a low-cost method to detect T. gondii DNA in soil samples developed a few years ago. Various parameters of the reference protocol were modified to determine their effect on the detection of T. gondii DNA in soil samples ("natural soil" and "sand") spiked with oocysts. We tested i) filtration using stomacher bags, ii) Tween 80, Tween 20, SDS and Triton X100 as dispersion solutions, iii) sucrose solution, zinc chloride solution, Optiprep and Percoll as density gradients, iv) freeze/thaw versus mechanical grinding as lysis methods, and v) Qiagen versus Fastprep as extraction kits The optimized protocol is quicker and easier to use than the previous one, and includes the following items: 0.1% Tween80/PBS for dispersion, sucrose solution for flotation, mechanical grinding, and FastDNA spin kit for extraction. It accurately detects T. gondii DNA in both fresh and frozen soil samples and displays a detection limit below 1 oocyst/g of fresh soil.

Anthropogenic inputs of trace elements (TE) into soils constitute a major public and environmental health problem. Bioavailability of TE is strongly related to the soil physicochemical parameters and thus to the ecosystem type. In order to test whether soil parameters influence the response of the bacterial community to TE pollution, we collected soil samples across contrasting ecosystems (hardwood, coniferous and hydromorphic soils), which have been contaminated in TE and especially lead (Pb) over several decades due to nearby industrial smelting activities. Bacterial community composition was analysed using high throughput amplicon sequencing and compared to the soil physicochemical parameters. Multivariate analyses of the pedological and biological data revealed that the bacterial community composition was affected by ecosystem type in the first place. An influence of the contamination level was also evidenced within each ecosystem. Despite the important variability in bacterial community structure, we found that specific bacterial groups such as γ-Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia and Chlamydiae showed a consistent response to Pb content across contrasting ecosystems. Verrucomicrobia were less abundant at high contamination level whereas Chlamydiae and γ-Proteobacteria were more abundant. We conclude that such groups and ratio's thereof can be considered as relevant bioindicators of Pb contamination.

Major and trace elements in soils originate from natural processes and different anthropogenic activities which are difficult to discriminate. On a 17-ha impacted site in northern France, two industrial sources of soil contamination were xidentified: a former iron foundry and a current secondary lead smelter. To discriminate and map natural and anthropogenic sources of major and trace elements on this site, the rarely applied MULTISPATI-principal component analysis (PCA) method was used. Using a 20-m × 20-m grid, 247 topsoil horizons were sampled and analysed with a field-portable X-ray fluorescence analyser for screening soil contamination. The study site was heavily contaminated with Pb and, to a lesser degree, with Sn. Summary statistics and enrichment factors allowed the differentiation of the main lithogenic or anthropogenic origin of the elements. The MULTISPATI-PCA method, which explained 73.9 % of the variability with the three first factors, evidenced strong spatial structures. Those spatial structures were attributed to different natural and artificial processes in the study area. The first axis can be interpreted as a lithogenic effect. Axes 2 and 3 reflect the two different contamination sources. Pb, Sn and S originated from the secondary lead smelter while Fe and Ca were mainly derived from the old iron foundry activity and the old railway built with foundry sand. This study demonstrated that the MULTISPATI-PCA method can be successfully used to investigate multicontaminated sites to discriminate the various sources of contamination.

The influence of Fe oxides, Mn oxides and organic matter (OM) on the Cu and Co mobility in soil and accumulation in the metallophyte Anisopappus chinensis (Ac), as compared with Helianthus annuus (Ha), was experimentally investigated. Growth and accumulation response when increasing the exchangeable Cu and Co concentrations in soil were also investigated. Plants were cultivated on soil where concentrations of Cu, Co, Fe oxides, Mn oxides and OM content were varied according to 36 treatments. The OM supply decreased the Cu mobility and increased the Co mobility, resulting in decreasing the foliar Cu of Ac and increasing the foliar Co of Ha. The Fe oxides supply could increase the Cu accumulation for Ac, but was not verified for Ha. Compared with Ha, Ac increasingly accumulated Cu and Co without negative effect on plant growth while increasing Cu and Co mobility to phytotoxic concentrations. The results revealed promising perspectives for the use of Ac in Cu-contaminated environment phytoremediation applications.

Smelting activities are one of the most common sources of trace elements in the environment. The aim of this study was to determine the lead distribution in upper horizons (0-5 and 5-10cm) of acidic soils in the vicinity of a lead-acid battery recycling plant in northern France. The combination of chemical methods (sequential extractions), physical methods (Raman microspectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive spectrometer) and multi-surface complexation modelling enabled an assessment of the behaviour of Pb. Regardless of the studied soil, none of the Pb-bearing phases commonly identified in similarly polluted environments (e.g., anglesite) were observed. Lead was mainly associated with organic matter and manganese oxides. The association of Pb with these soil constituents can be interpreted as evidence of Pb redistribution in the studied soils following smelter particle deposition.

Trace element (TE) speciation modelling in soil solution is controlled by the assumptions made about the soil solution composition. To evaluate this influence, different assumptions using Visual MINTEQ were tested and compared to measurements of free TE concentrations. The soil column Donnan membrane technique (SC-DMT) was used to estimate the free TE (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) concentrations in six acidic soil solutions. A batch technique using DAX-8 resin was used to fractionate the dissolved organic matter (DOM) into four fractions: humic acids (HA), fulvic acids (FA), hydrophilic acids (Hy) and hydrophobic neutral organic matter (HON). To model TE speciation, particular attention was focused on the hydrous manganese oxides (HMO) and the Hy fraction, ligands not considered in most of the TE speciation modelling studies in soil solution. In this work, the model predictions of free ion activities agree with the experimental results. The knowledge of the FA fraction seems to be very useful, especially in the case of high DOM content, for more accurately representing experimental data. Finally, the role of the manganese oxides and of the Hy fraction on TE speciation was identified and, depending on the physicochemical conditions of the soil solution, should be considered in future studies.
