RESUMEN
In eukaryotes, the STRUCTURAL MAINTENANCE OF CHROMOSOME 5/6 (SMC5/6) complex is critical to maintaining chromosomal structures around double-strand breaks (DSBs) in DNA damage repair. However, the recruitment mechanism of this conserved complex at DSBs remains unclear. In this study, using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model, we found that SMC5/6 localization at DSBs is dependent on the protein scaffold containing INVOLVED IN DE NOVO 2 (IDN2), CELL DIVISION CYCLE 5 (CDC5), and ALTERATION/DEFICIENCY IN ACTIVATION 2B (ADA2b), whose recruitment is further mediated by DNA-damage-induced RNAs (diRNAs) generated from DNA regions around DSBs. The physical interactions of protein components including SMC5-ADA2b, ADA2b-CDC5, and CDC5-IDN2 result in formation of the protein scaffold. Further analysis indicated that the DSB localization of IDN2 requires its RNA-binding activity and ARGONAUTE 2 (AGO2), indicating a role for the AGO2-diRNA complex in this process. Given that most of the components in the scaffold are conserved, the mechanism presented here, which connects SMC5/6 recruitment and small RNAs, will improve our understanding of DNA repair mechanisms in eukaryotes.

Developing cobalt-based catalysts with a high abundance of oxygen vacancies (Vo) and exceptional Vo utility efficiency for the prompt removal of stubborn contaminants through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation poses a significant challenge. Herein, we reported the synthesis of the reduced Mg-doped Co3O4 nanosheets, i.e. Mg-doped Co3O4-r, via Mg doping and followed by NaBH4 reduction, aiming to degrade tetracycline (TC). Various characterization results illustrated that NaBH4 reduction imparted higher Vo utility efficiency to Mg-doped Co3O4-r, along with an ample presence of reduced Co2+ species and an increased surface area, thereby substantially elevating PMS activation capability. Notably, Mg-doped Co3O4-r achieved more than 97.9% degradation of 20 mg/L TC within 10 min, showing an over 8-fold increase in reaction rate relative to the Mg-doped Co3O4 (kobs: 0.3285 min-1 vs 0.0399 min-1). The high removal efficiency of TC was sustained across a broad pH range of 3-11, even in the presence of common anions and humic acid. Radical quenching trials, EPR outcomes, and electrochemical analysis indicated that neither radicals nor 1O2 were the primary active species. Instead, electron transfer pathway played a dominant role in TC degradation. The Mg-doped Co3O4-r displayed excellent recyclability and versatility. Even after the fifth cycle, it maintained an impressive 83.0% removal of TC. Furthermore, it exhibited rapid degradation capabilities for various pollutants, including levofloxacin, pefloxacin, ciprofloxacin, malachite green, and rhodamine B. The TC degradation pathway was proposed based on LC-MS determination of its degradation intermediates. This study showcases an innovative strategy for the rational design of an efficient cobalt-based activator, leveraging electron transfer pathways through PMS activation to degrade antibiotics effectively.

Conventional perovskite oxides (ABO3) tend to suffer from their inactive surfaces and limited active sites that reduce their catalytic activity and stability, while interface engineering is a facile modulating technique to boost the catalyst's inherent activity by constructing heterogeneous interfaces. In this study, perovskite/spinel LaCoO3/Co3O4 nanocomposites with heterogeneous interfaces were synthesized via sol-gel and in-situ gradient etching methods to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading levofloxacin (LEV). LaCoO3 on the surface was etched into spinel Co3O4, and LaCoO3/Co3O4 nanocomposites with two crystal structures of perovskite and spinel were successfully formed. The surface-modified LaCoO3/Co3O4 exhibited superior catalytic performance with a reaction rate constant more than 2 times that of the original LaCoO3, as well as excellent pH adaptability (3-11) and reusability (more than 6 recyclings) for LEV degradation. Besides, multiple characterization techniques were carried out to find that LaCoO3/Co3O4 possessed a larger specific surface area and richer oxygen vacancies after surface modification, which provided more active sites and accelerated mass transfer rate. The mechanism of reactive oxygen species involved in the reaction system was proposed that LaCoO3/Co3O4 not only reacted with PMS directly to produce SO4â¢- and â¢OH but also its surface hydroxyl group helped to form the [≡Co(â ¢)OOSO3]+ reactive complex with PMS to produce O2â¢- and 1O2. In addition, electrochemical experiments demonstrated that the surface electronic structure of LaCoO3/Co3O4 was effectively regulated, exhibiting a faster electron transfer rate and facilitating the redox process. By detecting and identifying degradation intermediates, three degradation pathways for LEV were proposed. Our work provided profound insights into the design of efficient and long-lasting catalysts for advanced oxidation processes.

Increasing amounts of experimental evidence show that anthocyanins provide physiological protection to plants under stress. However, the difference in photoprotection mediated by anthocyanins and other photoprotective substances in different seasons is still uncertain. To determine the relationship between anthocyanin accumulation and the photoprotective effects in different seasons, Castanopsis chinensis and Acmena acuminatissima, whose anthocyanin accumulation patterns differ in different seasons, were used as materials to explain how plants adapt to different seasons; as such, their physiological and biochemical responses were analyzed. Young leaves of C. chinensis and A. acuminatissima presented different colors in the different seasons. In summer, the young leaves of C. chinensis were purplish red, while those of A. acuminatissima were light green. In winter, the young leaves of C. chinensis were light green, while those of A. acuminatissima were red. Compared with the young red leaves, the young light green leaves that did not accumulate anthocyanins had higher flavonoid and phenolics contents, total antioxidant capacity, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and relative membrane leakage, and a slower recovery rate in the maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) after high-light treatment. In addition, the net photosynthesis rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (gs), and the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) of the young leaves in winter were significantly lower than those in summer, while the activities of catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7), and superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1) were significantly higher than those in summer. These data indicate that to adapt to seasonal changes anthocyanins, other antioxidative substances and antioxidative enzymes, as well as components involved in the safe dissipation of excitation energy as heat need to cooperate with one another.

Biological invasion is a hot topic in ecological research. Most studies on the physiological mechanisms of plants focus on leaves, but few studies focus on stems. To study the tolerance of invasive plant (Sphagneticola trilobata L.) to low temperature, relevant physiological indicators (including anthocyanin and chlorophyll) in different organs (leaves and stems) were analyzed, using a native species (Sphagneticola calendulacea L.) as the control. The results showed that, upon exposure to low temperature for 15 days, the stems of two Sphagneticola species were markedly reddened, their anthocyanin content increased, chlorophyll and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters decreased, and the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in the stem increased. The percentage increases of antioxidants and total antioxidant capacities in stems were significantly higher in S. trilobata than in S. calendulacea. This showed that S. trilobata had higher cold tolerance in stems while leaves were opposite. To further verify the higher cold tolerance of the stem of S. trilobata, a defoliation experiment was designed. We found that the defoliated stem of S. trilobata reduced anthocyanin accumulation and increased chlorophyll content, while alleviating membrane lipid damage and electrical conductivity, and the defoliated stem still showed an increase in stem diameter and biomass under low temperature. The discovery of the physiological and adaptive mechanisms of the stem of S. trilobata to low temperature will provide a theoretical basis for explaining how S. trilobata maintains its annual growth in South China. This is of great significance for predicting the future spread of cloned and propagated invasive plants.

Anthocyanins are water-soluble pigments in plants known for their photoprotective role against photoinhibitory and photooxidative damage under high light (HL). However, it remains unclear whether light-shielding or antioxidant activity plays a major role in the photoprotection exerted by anthocyanins under HL stress. To shed light on this question, we analyzed the physiological and biochemical responses to HL of three Arabidopsis thaliana lines (Col, chi, ans) with different light absorption and antioxidant characteristics. Under HL, ans had the highest antioxidant capacity, followed by Col, and finally chi; Col had the strongest light attenuation capacity, followed by chi, and finally ans. The line ans had weaker physiological activity of chloroplasts and more severe oxidative damage than chi after HL treatment. Col with highest photoprotection of light absorption capacity had highest resistance to HL among the three lines. The line ans with high antioxidant capacity could not compensate for its disadvantages in HL caused by the absence of the light-shielding function of anthocyanins. In addition, the expression level of the Anthocyanin Synthase (ANS) gene was most upregulated after HL treatment, suggesting that the conversion of colorless into colored anthocyanin precursors was necessary under HL. The contribution of anthocyanins to flavonoids, phenols, and antioxidant capacity increased in the late period of HL, suggesting that plants prefer to synthesize red anthocyanins (a group of colored antioxidants) over other colorless antioxidants to cope with HL. These experimental observations indicate that the light attenuation role of anthocyanins is more important than their antioxidant role in photoprotection.

The screening and identification of hyperaccumulators is the key to the phytoremediation of soils contaminated by heavy metal (HM). Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) can improve plant growth and tolerance to HM; therefore, AMF-assisted phytoextraction has been regarded as a potential technique for the remediation of HM-polluted soils. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to determine whether Sphagneticola calendulacea is a Cd-hyperaccumulator and to investigate the effect of the AMF-Funneliformis mosseae (FM) on plant growth and on the accumulation, subcellular distribution and chemical form of Cd in S. calendulacea grown in soils supplemented with different Cd levels. At 25, 50 and 100 mg Cd kg-1 level, S. calendulacea showed high Cd tolerance, the translocation factor and the bioconcentration factor exceeded 1, and accumulation of more than 100 mg Cd kg-1 was observed in the aboveground parts of the plant, meeting the requirements for a Cd-hyperaccumulator. Moreover, FM colonization significantly increased both biomasses and Cd concentration in S. calendulacea. After FM inoculation, the Cd concentrations and proportions increased in the cell walls, but exhibited no significant change in the organelles of the shoots. Meanwhile, FM symbiosis contributed to the conversion of Cd from highly toxic chemical forms (extracted by 80% ethanol and deionized water) to less toxic chemical forms (extracted by 1 M NaCl, 2% acetic acid, 0.6 M HCl) of Cd in the shoots. Overall, S. calendulacea is a typical Cd-hyperaccumulator, and FM symbiosis relieved the phytotoxicity of Cd and promoted plant growth and Cd accumulation, and thus greatly increasing the efficiency of phytoextraction for Cd-polluted soil. Our study provides a theoretical basis and application guidance for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil by the symbiont of S. calendulacea with FM.

Accumulating evidence has highlighted the potential of microRNAs (miRs) as biomarkers in various human diseases. However, the roles of miRs in bacterial meningitis (BM), a severe infectious condition, still remain unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of miR-135a on proliferation and apoptosis of astrocytes in BM. Neonatal rats were injected with Streptococcus pneumoniae to establish the BM model. The expression of miR-135a and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) in the BM rat models were characterized, followed by determination of their interaction. Using gain- and loss-of-function approaches, the effects of miR-135a on proliferation, apoptosis, and expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), in addition to apoptosis-related factors in astrocytes were examined accordingly. The regulatory effect of HIF-1α was also determined along with the overexpression or knockdown of HIF-1α. The results obtained indicated that miR-135a was poorly expressed, whereas HIF-1α was highly expressed in the BM rat models. In addition, restored expression levels of miR-135a were determined to promote proliferation while inhibiting the apoptosis of astrocytes, along with downregulated Bax and Bad, as well as upregulated Bcl-2, Bcl-XL, and GFAP. As a target gene of miR-135a, HIF-1α expression was determined to be diminished by miR-135a. The upregulation of HIF-1α reversed the miR-135a-induced proliferation of astrocytes. Taken together, the key findings of the current study present evidence suggesting that miR-135a can downregulate HIF-1α and play a contributory role in the development of astrocytes derived from BM, providing a novel theoretical perspective for BM treatment approaches.

BACKGROUND: Oxcarbazepine (OXC) is almost completely metabolized to its10-monohydroxy derivative (MHD), which is responsible for the pharmacological effects of the drug. Several studies have described the population pharmacokinetics (PPK) of MHD in pediatric patients, but little is known about its pharmacokinetics in adult patients. In addition, no study to date has proposed a model to investigate the influence of genetic polymorphisms on MHD pharmacokinetics. The aim of this study was to establish a PPK model of MHD to investigate the effects of genetic polymorphisms in UGT2B7, UGT1A9, ABCB1, and ABCB2 in adult Chinese patients with epilepsy and to develop a new dosage guideline for OXC. METHODS: Data were prospectively collected from 187 adult patients with epilepsy who were taking OXC. MHD trough concentrations were detected by enzyme-multiplied immunoassay. Patients were genotyped for 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (UGT2B7 802T>C, UGT1A9 I399C>T, ABCB1 3435C>T, and ABCB2 1249G>A). Other covariates included sex, age, body weight (BW), hepato-renal function, and concomitant medications. Data were analyzed using the nonlinear mixed effects modelling software. RESULTS: The apparent clearance (CL) of MHD was significantly influenced by glomerular filtration rate and BW, and was unrelated to other covariates such as genetic polymorphisms and coadministration with levetiracetam, lamotrigine, and topiramate. Moreover, a new dosage guideline was proposed based on the final model to individualize OXC regimens for adult patients with varying BW and renal function. CONCLUSIONS: Glomerular filtration rate was first found as an important covariate influencing MHD CL. A PPK model was established to estimate the individual MHD CL for adult patients taking OXC and may be applied for individualizing doses in the target population.

PURPOSE: Oxcarbazepine (OXC) is an antiepileptic drug metabolised to active 10-monohydroxy derivative (MHD) following oral administration. There are no MHD population pharmacokinetic (PPK) models that describe the influence of genetic factors on MHD pharmacokinetics (PK). We developed a PPK model of MHD to investigate gene polymorphism of enzymes associated with MHD PK in Chinese paediatric epilepsy patients and evaluated its utility for dose individualisation. METHODS: Data were prospectively collected from 141 paediatric epilepsy patients (aged ≤ 14 years) who received OXC therapy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. The trough concentrations at steady state were determined by enzyme-multiplied immunoassay. Patients were genotyped for four single nucleotide polymorphisms (UGT2B7 802T>C, UGT1A9 I399C>T, ABCB1 3435C>T, and ABCB2 1249G>A). Patient gender, age, body weight (BW), hepatorenal function, and co-administrations were recorded. The PPK model was developed using nonlinear mixed-effects modelling software. The clinical performance of the final model was evaluated by including additional paediatric patients (n = 20) in the validation group. RESULTS: Oral clearance of MHD was significantly influenced by BW. The MHD PK was unrelated to the other covariates, such as the four single nucleotide polymorphisms and co-administration with new-generation antiepileptic drugs. The final BW-dependent exponent model showed the best fit with our data and predicted the trough concentrations in the validation group more accurately than the basic model. A new dosing strategy combining the dosage guideline and Bayesian method is proposed to individualise OXC regimens. CONCLUSION: A PPK model was established to estimate individual MHD clearance in paediatric patients taking OXC to develop individualised OXC dosing regimens for Chinese paediatric epilepsy patients.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) can relieve Cd phytotoxicity and improve plant growth, but the mechanisms involved in this process have still been not completely known. In the present work, a pot experiment was conducted to examine productions of glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs), and absorption, chemical forms and subcellular distribution of Cd in maize (Zea mays) inoculated with or without AMF (Rhizophagus intraradices (Ri) and Glomus versiforme (Gv)) in Cd-amended soils (0, 1 and 5â¯mgâ¯Cdâ¯kg-1 soil). In general, both Ri and Gv inoculation dramatically enhanced biomass production and reduced Cd concentrations in shoots and roots of maize when compared to the non-mycorrhizal treatment. Moreover, both Ri and Gv symbiosis obviously increased contents of GSH and PCs, both in shoots and roots. Subcellular distribution of Cd in maize indicated that most of Cd (more than 90%) was accumulated in cell wall and soluble fraction. In addition, Cd proportions in soluble fractions in shoots of maize inoculated with Gv or Ri were considerably increased, but reduced in cell wall fractions compared to non-mycorrhizal maize, indicating that mycorrhizal symbiosis promoted Cd transfer to vacuoles. Furthermore, proportions of Cd in inorganic and water-soluble forms were declined, but elevated in pectates and proteins-integrated forms in mycorrhizal maize, which suggested that Gv and Ri could convert Cd into inactive forms. These observations could provide a further understanding of potential Cd detoxification mechanism in maize inoculated with AMF.

Seagrasses play an important role in coastal marine ecosystems, but they have been increasingly threatened by human activities. In recent years, seagrass communities have rapidly degenerated in the coastal marine ecosystems of China. To identify the reasons for the decline in seagrasses, the phytotoxic effects of trace metals (Cu, Cd and Zn) on the seagrass Thalassia hemprichii were investigated, and the environmental contents of the metals were analyzed where the seagrass grows. The results showed that leaf necrosis in T. hemprichii exposed to 0.01-0.1 mg L-1 of Cu2+ for 5 days was more serious than that in plants exposed to the same concentrations of Cd2+ and Zn2+. The chlorophyll content in T. hemprichii declined in a concentration-dependent manner after 5 days of exposure to Cu2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+. The evident reduction in ΔF/Fm' in T. hemprichii leaves was observed at day 1 of exposure to 0.01-1.0 mg L-1 of Cu2+ and at day 3 of exposure to 0.1-1.0 mg L-1 of Cd2+. The antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, POD and CAT) in T. hemprichii leaves exposed to the three metal ions also showed significant changes. In seawater from Xincun Bay (Hainan, China), where T. hemprichii grows, Cu had reached a concentration (i.e., 0.01 mg L-1) that could significantly reduce chlorophyll content and ΔF/Fm' in T. hemprichii leaves. Our results indicate that Cu influences the deterioration of seagrasses in Xincun Bay.

Our aim was to investigate insemination techniques in order to improve pregnancy rates of artificial insemination (AI) using sex-sorted semen (sexed AI) in cattle in tropical and subtropical (T/ST) regions. In T/ST regions, the pregnancy rates by sexed AI are reportedly the lowest in the hottest months of the year, with less than 15% in cows and 35-40% in heifers (PMID 24048822). We compared sexed AI by depositing the semen into the uterine body (UB-AI, n = 12) versus the unilateral uterine horn (UUH-AI, n = 14) of pre-ovulation heifers. The ovary and follicle were assessed by rectal ultrasound before AI. After insemination, pregnancy was determined by ultrasound at approximately 40 days and approximately 70 days. In the present study, we demonstrated that high pregnancy rates (>70%) by sexed AI in the hottest season in a subtropical region such as Taiwan can be achieved when heifers with pre-ovulation follicles are used. The overall pregnancy rates were 54% higher in the UUH-AI (71%) group than in the UB-AI (42%) group (P = 0.06), examined on approximately 40 days post-sexed AI. Surprisingly, however, the pregnancy outcome appeared to be higher in the hot season (62%) than in the cool season (46%) although this difference was not statistically significant. Based on the present study, we recommend that cattle breeders perform UUH-AI using sex-sorted semen for heifers with pre-ovulation follicles in order to achieve satisfactory pregnancy outcome in the hot seasons in T/ST regions.

PURPOSE: Vancomycin (VCM) is a first-line antibacterial drug used to treat post-craniotomy meningitis (PCM). VCM pharmacokinetic parameters are altered in PCM patients, compared to those in other patients. Although VCM population pharmacokinetics (PPK) has been reported, changes in VCM PPK in adult Chinese PCM patients remain unknown. We developed a VCM PPK model in adult Chinese PCM patients and proposed a new strategy for individualising VCM administration using this model. METHODS: Data was obtained from a prospective study of 100 adult PCM patients in the Neurosurgery Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. The trough concentrations at steady state were determined by enzyme multiplied immunoassay. Nonlinear mixed-effect model software was employed to develop the PPK model. The final model was evaluated using the bootstrap method and normalised prediction error distribution and through the testing of 20 independent adult PCM patients. RESULTS: VCM clearance in PCM patients was higher than that observed in other patients. Creatinine clearance affected VCM clearance, whereas no co-administered drugs influenced VCM pharmacokinetics. Trough concentrations were accurately predicted by the final model, while the prediction errors were less than ±32 %. Moreover, a new strategy for individualising VCM regimens using the PPK model was proposed and validated. CONCLUSIONS: A PPK model was developed to estimate the individual clearance in inpatients receiving intravenously infused VCM and could be used to develop individualised dosing of adult Chinese PCM patients.

BACKGROUND: There are several reports describing population pharmacokinetic (PPK) models of valproic acid (VPA). However, little was known in Chinese adult patients with epilepsy. The present study aimed to establish a PPK model for VPA in Chinese adult epileptic patients and to demonstrate its use for dose individualization. METHODS: Data were obtained from a prospective study of 199 adult epileptic patients at 5 hospitals. The trough concentrations at steady state were measured by fluorescence polarization immunoassay. Data were analyzed using the Nonlinear Mixed Effects Model software. The serum trough concentrations at steady state were also measured using samples (n = 20) collected prospectively from a different hospital from those providing the data for deriving the original model. These independent samples served as an evaluation group. RESULTS: The important determinants of apparent VPA clearance were daily dose, body weight, and combination with carbamazepine, phenytoin, or phenobarbital. The final model predicted the individualized doses accurately. A total of 85% of the trough concentrations in the evaluation group were accurately predicted by the final model, whereas the prediction errors of the other patients were all < ± 31%. CONCLUSIONS: A PPK model was developed to estimate the individual clearance for patients taking VPA and could be applied for individualizing doses in the target population.

The effects of Dissostichus mawsoni-Calmodulin (Dm-CaM) on growth performance, enzyme activities, respiratory burst, MDA level and immune-related gene expressions of the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) exposed to the acute low temperature stress were evaluated. The commercial diet supplemented with Dm-CaM protein was fed to the groupers for 6 weeks. No significant difference was observed in the specific growth rates, weight gains and survivals. After the feeding trial, the groupers were exposed to acute low temperature challenge. The groupers fed with Dm-CaM additive diet showed a significant decrease in the respiratory burst activity, while the blood cell number increased significantly at 25 °C by comparing with the control and additive control group. The enzymatic activity of SOD, ACP and ALP increased significantly in Dm-CaM additive group, while MDA level maintained stable with the lowest value. qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the up-regulated transcript expressions of CaM, C3, SOD2, LysC and HSPA4 were observed in Dm-CaM additive group. These results indicated that Dm-CaM additive diet may regulate the grouper immune response to the acute low temperature challenge.

The study aimed to establish a population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PPK/PD) model of warfarin. PCR-RFLP technique was used to genotype the CYP2C9 and VKORC1 polymorphisms of 73 patients. RP-HPLC-UV method was used to determine the 190 plasma concentrations of warfarin. Application of NONMEM, the clinical information and 263 international normalized ratio (INR) monitoring data were used to investigate the effect of genetic, physiological, pathological factors, other medication on clearance and anticoagulant response. The final model of warfarin PPK/PD was described as follows: CL = θCL · (WT/60)θWT · θCYP · eηCL (if CYP2C9*1/*1, θCYP = 1; if *1/*3, θCYP = 0.708); EC50 = θEC50 · θVKOR · eηEC50 (if VKORC1- 1639AA, θVKOR = 1; if GA, θVKOR = 2.01; V = θV; K(E0) = θK(E0); Emax = θEmax; E0 = θE0 · eηE0. Among them, the body weight (WT), CYP2C9 and VKORC1 genotype had conspicuous effect on warfarin PK/PD parameters. The goodness diagnosis, Bootstrap, NPDE verification showed that the final model was stable, effective and predictable. It may provide a reference for opitimizing the dose regimen of warfarin.

Energy consumption from air cooling systems in summer, water scarcity in hot regions, and the functional reusability of waste paper are emerging environmental problems. Finding solutions to these problems simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Herein, a superhydrophobic passive cooling Cellulose-CaCO3 film with hierarchical nano-sheets was fabricated to realize daytime radiative cooling with a temperature drop of 15-20 °C in summer and water harvesting with harvesting efficiency of 387 mg cm-2h-1 bd utilization of recycled waste paper. The superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO3 film demonstrates its self-cleaning properties against inorganic and organic pollutants. Furthermore, the superhydrophobicity of the film was maintained after base/acid corrosions, dynamic water flushing, and thermal treatment at 100 °C for 7 h, exhibiting good durability of the superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO3 film is nonflammable after exposure to fire combustion for 1 min. In addition to waste paper, waste maize straws, and pasteboards were also collected to produce superhydrophobic passive cooling films. Results indicate that the above three cellulose-based raw materials can be well used to prepare durable superhydrophobic passive cooling materials. Environmental toxicology assessments confirm the safety of the material. This study not only provides a protocol for preparing superhydrophobic materials; but also demonstrates their potential for passive cooling and water harvesting.
RESUMEN
Soil samples were collected in at different depths from the conflagration area in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Region, China, to investigate the distribution characteristics and ecological and human health risks of heavy metals after a wildfire. The samples collected comprise wildfire ash (WA) above the soil surface, ash soil (AS) 0-5 cm, and plain soil (PS) 5-15 cm below the soil surface. Additionally, reference soil (RS) was collected from a nearby unburned area at the same latitude as the conflagration area. The results showed that the concentrations of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in the WA and AS were significantly higher than in reference soil (RS) (p < 0.05). Concentrations of Pb in the PS were 2.52 times higher than that in RS (17.9 mg kg-1) (p < 0.05). The AS and WA had the highest Index of potential ecological risks (RI > 600). In addition, The Cd in AS and WA contributed the most to the highest Improved nemerow index (INI) and RI with a contribution of more than 80%. The concentration of heavy metals was used to establish non-carcinogenic effects and cancer risks in humans via three exposure pathways: accident ingestion of soil, dermal contact with soil, and inhalation of soil particles. Hazard index (HI) values of each sample were all less than 1, indicating the non-carcinogenic risk was within the acceptable range and would not adversely affect the local population's health. The Cancer risk (CR) values of Cr, As, Cd, and Ni were all below 1 × 10-6, indicating that heavy metal pollution from this wildfire did not pose a cancer risk to residents.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of magnetic susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) for measuring deep cerebral venous diameter. METHODS: The diameters of 150 deep cerebral veins were measured by SWI and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in 50 patients. RESULTS: SWI showed whole cerebral veins as clear soft vessels, but with a crooked hypointense linear structure along the sulcus. Venous vessel diameter as measured by SWI was greater than that by DSA, but values from the two different techniques showed significant linear correlation (r=0.905). CONCLUSION: SWI is reliable and suitable for quantitative measurements of deep cerebral veins, and more sensitive for measuring smaller vessels deep within the brain.
