RESUMEN

Gamification is an innovative pedagogy involving immersive technology that acknowledges learner-centric milieus and dynamic teaching practices. Gamification is positioned well in nursing education because learners can translate tools from team experiences, communication, and critical thinking questions into the healthcare setting. This article introduces an escape-the-room format that was constructed for a preceptor program at a large academic medical center. The results of the implementation encourage gamification as an engaging methodology in clinical education.

RESUMEN

Virtual reality (VR) is an innovative teaching strategy for professional development using computer-generated, three-dimensional images in an interactive virtual environment. Self-reported survey responses of nurses who used VR in orientation and the nurse residency program demonstrated improved knowledge, skills, and confidence. VR provides an innovative and engaging educational medium for learning that may have implications for future clinical practice and research.

RESUMEN

Documentation of competency as validation of nursing skill and knowledge is essential for safe patient care. In efforts to leverage technology and maximize mobile resources, a process for electronic competency validation was developed. Utilization of quick response (QR) codes allows for easy application and efficient tracking. Results include cost savings, improved time spent on filing, and overall satisfaction. This is a simple and sustainable process for competency documentation that can translate across diverse professional development settings.

RESUMEN

In an effort to streamline educational initiatives at our institution, we developed the Nursing Education and Competency Algorithm and the Nursing Education and Competency Advisory Panel. The Nursing Education and Competency Algorithm serves as a framework in differentiating education and competency through standardization of practice. Utilizing the algorithm assists in distinguishing initiatives as one time, on-going, or if they are specific to a specialty. The Nursing Education and Competency Advisory Panel serves as a vetting structure to improve collaboration through decision-making and shared governance.
