RESUMEN

Over the past decades, rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) observations have provided large samples of UV luminous galaxies at redshift (z) greater than 6 (refs. 1-3), during the so-called epoch of reionization. While a few of these UV-identified galaxies revealed substantial dust reservoirs4-7, very heavily dust-obscured sources at these early times have remained elusive. They are limited to a rare population of extreme starburst galaxies8-12 and companions of rare quasars13,14. These studies conclude that the contribution of dust-obscured galaxies to the cosmic star formation rate density at z > 6 is sub-dominant. Recent ALMA and Spitzer observations have identified a more abundant, less extreme population of obscured galaxies at z = 3-6 (refs. 15,16). However, this population has not been confirmed in the reionization epoch so far. Here, we report the discovery of two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies at z = 6.6813 ± 0.0005 and z = 7.3521 ± 0.0005. These objects are not detected in existing rest-frame UV data and were discovered only through their far-infrared [C II] lines and dust continuum emission as companions to typical UV-luminous galaxies at the same redshift. The two galaxies exhibit lower infrared luminosities and star-formation rates than extreme starbursts, in line with typical star-forming galaxies at z ≈ 7. This population of heavily dust-obscured galaxies appears to contribute 10-25% to the z > 6 cosmic star formation rate density.

RESUMEN

Religion and spirituality (R/S) are embedded in all aspects of life in India, a predominantly rural economy. The aim of this mixed methods study was to assess the associations between a culturally tailored intervention and preexisting religious/spiritual (R/S) practices with indicators of well-being and factors which contribute to happiness among elderly rural women from Haryana state, India. The study consisted of three groups: field experimental group (FEG; n = 24); practitioners of preexisting R/S practices for at least 6 weeks Satsang (SG, n = 54), Brahma Kumaris (BKG, n = 54), and Radha Soami (RSG, n = 30), and non-practitioners of R/S practices (n = 64). All groups completed self-report measures of overall happiness and life satisfaction, global health, quality of life, and health status and physical health. Results revealed that FEG participants improved significantly on physical health, body balancing, and self-care; no changes were observed on the other well-being measures following the intervention. Practitioners of preexisting R/S practices were found significantly different from the non-practitioners on some indicators of health, quality of life, and well-being. Qualitative measures pointed to the importance of R/S and family and interpersonal relationships among elderly rural women.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES (BACKGROUND): Risk of dental injury from contact sports can be prevented by the use of mouthguards. Dentists provide excellent information regarding mouthguards. Thus, the aim was to assess the awareness among dentists regarding the same, the level of training in fabricating a mouthguard and whether they regularly recommend one for their athletically active patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This institutional cross-sectional survey was conducted in the Department of Orthodontics, Government Dental College, Kottayam, and Kerala, India. An online form was sent out to 1500 offices and departments in dental institutions through email with a time period of 1 month given to fill responses and was analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: A response from 640 was recorded; most of them had not received or had fabricated a mouthguard during their dental training or private practice, even though one-third recommended one to their athletically active patients with a lack of formal training being the reason for not routinely advocating mouthguard usage. Most were aware of more than one type of mouthguards and recommended customized one for the same, however, more than half were not aware of a different type intended for orthodontic patients. CONCLUSION: It is not a routine practice currently, among general dentists and specialists alike, in our country, to prescribe a mouthguard. It is time that the dental fraternity spread awareness for the prevention of injuries. A relook into the academic curriculum while advocating the use of customized mouthguards to patients due to contact sports is required.

RESUMEN

Hyalinosis cutis et mucosae (lipoid proteinosis) is a rare disorder characterized by hyaline and lipid deposits in the skin and mucous membrane of the oral cavity, upper respiratory tract, and internal organs. It usually appears in infancy with hoarseness. This disorder is particularly interesting because of its rarity and wide range of clinical manifestations. We report a case that demonstrated manifestations of lipoid proteinosis.

RESUMEN

The case of a 30-year-old man with aglossia is reported. Aglossia, a rare condition, is a developmental disorder in which the entire tongue is absent. It is usually associated with jaw and facial anomalies. In this patient, both the maxilla and mandible were affected. Although the mortality rate of patients with aglossia is high, this patient has been able to cope with his oral function with minimal obstruction.

RESUMEN

Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) of the jaws is a rare lesion and majority of them arise from the epithelial lining of pre-existing odontogenic cysts (OCS). In a case of 20 year old male, PIOC presented a painless swelling extending from left posterior side of the mandible to across the midline with a duration of three months. X-rays revealed a cystic Unilocular radiolucency with well demarcated margin. Aspiration revealed the characteristics of cystic fluid. Histological examination of the biopsy specimen following marsupialisation showed SCA arising in cystic lining. In another case of 24 year old female, PIOC presented a painless swelling on the right side of the mandible with a hollow cavity seen intraorally in the region of the first molar, exfoliated itself in one month. X-rays revealed a cystic radiolucency but with irregular margin centrally. Histologic examination of a biopsy specimen from the lining of the cavity showed SCA originating in cystic lining. In both cases habit of tobacco was absent.

RESUMEN

Osteosarcoma, either primary or metastatic, rarely involves the jaws. Though only a few cases of mandibular metastasis of osteosarcoma have been reported, only one case of et al maxillary involvement (Singh, 1978) has been reported. A case of 21 year old boy with metastasis of osteosarcoma to the right maxilla from primary osteosarcoma of the left femur is presented. The patient complained of pain and swelling in the left maxillary region which was earlier diagnosed as maxillary sinusitis on the basis of Water's sinus radiograph in a medical hospital. Further radiographic examination with the panoramic and intraoral periapical radiographs done by us and later by fine needle aspiration cytology led us to diagnose a secondary deposits of osteosarcoma.

RESUMEN

Orofacial manifestations in cases of Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome (MPD) diagnosed amongst 71 Dental patients were studied in detail. Findings of this study show that the chief complaint and associated orofacial manifestations of MPD are related to muscular hypertonicity. Stressful situations may produce muscular hypertension, which leads to muscle tenderness as a symptom of over work and fatigue. MPD may be considered a psycosomatic disease.

RESUMEN

Malignant melanoma of the oral cavity can be primary or secondary due to metastasis from distant site. Incidence of oral cavity by metastasis of melanoma is 1.85%. Most common oral sites involved are tongue, buccal mucosa and parotid gland. Oral lesions occur as a part of disseminated disease during the advanced stages and has poor prognosis. An unusual case of metastatic malignant melanoma of the maxillary gingiva is reported.

RESUMEN

Adenomatoid tumor is a benign neoplasm of the male and female genital tracts arising from mesothelial cells. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) plays a pivotal role in its preoperative diagnosis. Therefore, it is imperative that pathologists should be well aware of its cytological features so as to avoid erroneous diagnosis and hence prevent unnecessary surgical interventions. We hereby, present a case of adenomatoid tumor of testis in a 41 year male diagnosed by FNAC and later confirmed by histopathological examination.

RESUMEN

Granulomatous inflammation of the prostate is a rare type of inflammation of the prostate. It is of various types, with the non-specific type of granulomatous inflammation being the most common. Xanthogranulomatous prostatitis is a rare type of granulomatous prostatitis of which very few cases have been reported. Histologically it is characterized by the presence of pale-looking foamy macrophages. It can be an incidental finding after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), although it may mimic prostatic malignancy clinically, biochemically, and rarely histologically. We report a rare case of xanthogranulomatous prostatitis which presented as a prostatic abscess, a presentation never reported in literature so far. The patient was managed with TURP.
