OBJECTIVES: Patients with laboratory criteria for anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS) but presenting only 'non-criteria' clinical manifestations are scarcely characterized in the literature. We aimed to analyse a cohort of these patients regarding the most prevalent manifestations, antibody profile, and treatments, while establishing a comparison with definite APS patients. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was conducted of individuals fulfilling APS laboratory criteria assessed in two tertiary European hospitals between 2005 and 2020. Patients without clinical criteria but with non-criteria manifestations (termed 'clinical non-criteria') and age-/gender-matched controls were included. RESULTS: Altogether, 75 clinical non-criteria patients were analysed, with haematological (thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia) and 'mild' neurological manifestations (white-matter lesions, migraine) as the most prevalent non-obstetric involvements. These patients displayed more thrombocytopenia [odds ratio (OR) = 3.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7-7.6; p = 0.001] than controls with APS, but severe manifestations, such as valvular heart disease (p < 0.001), livedoid vasculopathy, seizures, chorea, transverse myelitis, bone necrosis, and alveolar haemorrhage, occurred only in definite APS patients. Corticosteroids were required by 40% of patients with thrombocytopenia. Manifestations in anticoagulated patients included white-matter lesions, nephropathy, superficial vein thrombosis, amaurosis fugax, and livedoid vasculopathy. Suspicion of progression towards systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) occurred in 19% of non-SLE individuals. CONCLUSION: 'Clinical non-criteria' patients displayed significant treatment use, predominantly haematological involvement, and less severe manifestations than definite APS controls. Some patients may additionally progress to future SLE. The impact of certain manifestations flags them as potential future contributors to classifying individuals as definite APS.

Objectives: To analyze the characteristics and the predictive factors of the use of rituximab and belimumab in daily practice in patients from the inception cohort Registro Español de Lupus (RELES). Material and methods: The study included 518 patients. We considered patients treated with biologics who received at least one dose of rituximab or belimumab, and possible indications of those manifestations registered at the same time or in the previous 2 months of the start of the therapy. Results: In our cohort, 37 (7%) patients received at least one biological treatment. Rituximab was prescribed in 26 patients and belimumab in 11. Rituximab was mainly prescribed for hemolytic anemia or thrombocytopenia (11 patients, 42%), lupus nephritis and neuropsychiatric lupus (5 patients each, 19%). Belimumab was mostly used for arthritis (8 patients, 73%). In the univariate analysis, the predictive factors at diagnosis for the use of biologic therapy were younger age (p = 0.022), a higher SLEDAI (p = 0.001) and the presence of psychosis (p = 0.011), organic mental syndrome (SOCA) (p = 0.006), hemolytic anemia (p = 0.001), or thrombocytopenia (p = 0.01). In the multivariant model, only younger age, psychosis, and hemolytic anemia were independent predictors of the use of biologics. Conclusions: Rituximab is usually given to patients with hematological, neuropsychiatric and renal involvement and belimumab for arthritis. Psychosis, hemolytic anemia and age at the diagnosis of lupus were independent predictive factors of the use of biological agents. Their global effects are beneficial, with a significant reduction in SLE activity and a low rate of side effects.

BACKGROUND: The absence of an effective treatment and vaccine in HIV-1 pandemic place preventive strategies such as safety and effective microbicide development as a central therapeutic approach to control HIV-1 pandemic nowadays. RESULTS: Studies of cytotoxicity, immune population status, inflammation or tissue damage and mainly prophylactic inhibition of HIV-1 infection in vaginal human explants demonstrate the biosafety and effectivity of G2-S16 dendrimer. Human explants treated with G2-S16 dendrimer or treated and HIV-1 infected do not presented signs of irritation, inflammation, immune activation or T cell populations deregulation. CONCLUSIONS: Herein we conclude that G2-S16 dendrimer has demonstrated sufficient efficacy, biosafety, effectivity and behavior in the closest to the real-life condition model represented by the human healthy donor vaginal tissue explants, to raise G2-S16 dendrimer as a promising candidate to clinical trials to develop an effective microbicide against HIV-1 infection.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring of disease activity in sclerosing dermatoses (SD) can be challenging and tools to support clinical decision-making are lacking. AIM: To analyse the impact of high-frequency ultrasonography (HFUS) on the clinical management of SD and to describe the US characteristics of disease activity. METHODS: This was a cohort study of patients with various SD [morphoea, systemic sclerosis (SS) and chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD)] who underwent HFUS between January 2017 and August 2019. HFUS criteria for diagnosing active SD were increased Doppler vascularity and/or meeting all B-mode greyscale US signs of activity. Discordance in SD activity between HFUS and clinical examination was evaluated at the time of the first US assessment. Changes in patient management were instituted after HFUS were recorded. RESULTS: In total, 72 patients (31 with morphoea, 19 with SS and 22 with cGvHD), who underwent 163 HFUS sessions in total, were included. All HFUS-active morphoea lesions exhibited increased vascularity, and all HFUS-active SS exhibited dermal thickening and dermal hypoechogenicity. HFUS-active cGvHD displayed increased dermal thickness and loss of definition of the dermal-hypodermal junction, and there were signs of panniculitis in 80% of cases and of increased vascularity in 70%. Discordance in disease activity between clinical and HFUS evaluation was found in 17 (23.6%) patients. Changes in clinical management after HFUS were made for 14 (19.4%) patients: treatment discontinuation for 6 patients (42.9%), treatment initiation for 5 (35.7%), medication change for 2 (14.3%) and skin biopsy taken for 1 (7.1%). CONCLUSION: HFUS seems an efficacious support tool in the monitoring of SD activity with a notable impact on clinical management. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the impact of HFUS-supported management changes on SD outcomes.

The objective of this project was to develop and test a web-based virtual dairy herd to help students understand the structure and functioning of a dairy herd, and to promote active learning. At the beginning of the course, the instructor defines the profiles of herds to be assigned to students (e.g., herd size, production, diets, fertility). Each student has a unique herd and engages in decision-making for desired management practices in the herd. Modeled events are based on cow physiology and normal dairy herd management practices. Students' activities and decisions include heat detection, insemination, pregnancy diagnosis, dry-off, diet specifications, feeding groups, colostrum and milk-replacer feeding, weaning, treatment of diseases, and milk withdrawal from the tank if antibiotics are used, among others. The daily output provides information on technical indexes, economic performance, counters of incorrect decisions as feedback for students, and score. Time in class can be devoted to discussions of dairy management issues. Additional exercises based on students' own herds (e.g., calculating required space for cows, land for forage production, manure management) can also be implemented. Students' performance in the virtual dairy farm was monitored over 3 years. The average score (n = 326) was 87.8 ± 1.1 over 100 points, suggesting that self-learning with the virtual dairy farm was highly successful. At the end of each semester, students (n = 277) responded to a survey on the experience of working with the virtual dairy herd. Most students (>87%) agreed that the virtual dairy herd was more effective and motivating than traditional lectures and helped them understand dairy production better. In an unannounced test conducted at least 2 wk before the final exam, students (n = 207) were asked 14 questions on dairy cattle and 14 similar questions on other species taught in the same class through traditional lectures. A similar test on the same students (n = 142) was conducted in their fifth semester (2 years later). Results were better in dairy compared with other species questions in the first (9.6 vs. 3.7) and fifth (8.0 vs. 3.8) semesters. The virtual dairy herd is an effective tool for teaching introductory courses in dairy production. The program can be accessed at www.virtualdairyfarm.org, and a manual and videos with instructions for instructors and students are available online.

RESUMEN

A viromics study on the intestinal contents of migratory wild ducks of the genera Anas, Mareca, Spatula, and Oxyura during their winter stay in Mexico showed the presence of the virus family Alloherpesviridae. The genus Cyprinivirus is part of this family and includes cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV3). This is the etiological agent of the lethal disease known as koi herpesvirosis, which affects different strains of Common Carp Cyrprinus carpio. In this study, samples of the contents of 87 wild duck intestines were analyzed by endpoint PCR, of which 7 samples were positive for the amplification of the TK gene fragment corresponding to CyHV3. These results contribute to the knowledge about the spread of this virus to other species of aquatic animals in areas where fish and ducks coexist.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the multidisciplinary uveitis units in which internal medicine departments participate in collaboration with ophthalmology departments in Spain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a multicentre, observational cross-sectional study that collected information using a structured survey sent by email to 1015 partners of the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases Workgroup of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (GEAS-SEMI) from the 1st to the 31st of March 2017. RESULTS: We identified a total of 21 support units/consultations for the ophthalmology departments. Seventeen (81%) of the units were specific internal medicine-ophthalmology consultations, and 5 (24%) units had been created in the past 5 years. A median of 460 patients were assessed per unit by the end of the year. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows, for the first time in Spain, the important and close collaboration between ophthalmologists and internists, especially in highly specialised national reference institutions.

INTRODUCTION: Although extensively characterized in the outpatient setting, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in the hospitalization wards is still scarcely portrayed, particularly in the perspective of its evolution over the years. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of SLE patients hospitalized in the Department of Autoimmune Diseases of a university hospital during a 20-year period (1995-2015), describing hospitalization characteristics, causes and predictors of outcome. RESULTS: A total of 814 hospitalizations concerning 339 patients were analysed. The main causes of admission were flare (40.2%), infection (19.2%), diagnostic procedures (18.8%) and thrombotic events (5.4%). Therapy with cyclophosphamide (odds ratio (OR) 1.908, p = 0.047) was associated with admission due to infection, while antimalarials displayed a protective effect (OR 0.649, p = 0.024). Nearly 3.9% of patients required admission to an intensive care unit, with associated antiphospholipid syndrome (OR 7.385, p = 0.04) standing as a predicting factor for this outcome. Readmission at 30 days occurred in 5.8% of patients, with thrombocytopenia (OR 6.007, p = 0.002) and renal involvement (OR 3.362, p = 0.032) featuring as predicting factors. Eight patients died, with antiphospholipid syndrome (OR 26.814, p = 0.02) and thrombocytopenia (OR 31.523, p = 0.01) being associated with mortality. There was no significant variation in patients' demographics or admission causes across the 20-year period, except for a decrease in admissions due to thrombotic and musculoskeletal causes. Recently, an increase in the use of mycophenolate mofetil and lower doses of glucocorticoids were noted. CONCLUSION: While demographics of SLE hospitalizations have not markedly changed over the past 20 years, changes in therapy patterns were observed. Thrombocytopenia, antiphospholipid syndrome and renal involvement featured as predictors of poor outcome.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of belimumab in patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a real-life setting.Methods: All SLE patients treated with belimumab in the Department of Autoimmune Diseases of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona were retrospectively analysed. The Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) score, clinical SLEDAI-2K, levels of anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibody, complement components C3 and C4, and 50% haemolytic complement activity (CH50) were recorded at baseline and at 6, 12, and 24 months. Adverse events were also collected.Results: Twenty-three patients (100% women) were enrolled in the study. The most frequent manifestations that led to belimumab use were arthritis (91%) and skin involvement (39%). Both SLEDAI-2K and clinical SLEDAI-2K improved over time at all time-points (p < 0.005). Complement levels increased and the values of anti-dsDNA antibody decreased during treatment. The mean dose of prednisone could be tapered at all time-points and achieved maximum and significant reduction at 24 months (10.4 ± 4.8 mg/day to 4.8 ± 2.1 mg/day; p < 0.0005). Belimumab was well tolerated and only six patients (26%) experienced adverse events, all of which were classified as infections (one urinary tract infection without bacterial detection in urine culture and five viral infections). No deaths, severe infusion reactions, or hypersensitivity reactions were noted.Conclusion: In our patients with SLE, belimumab decreased disease activity and allowed tapering of the daily glucocorticoid dose with a good safety profile.

OBJECTIVES: Using data of patients from the inception cohort Registro Español de Lupus Eritematoso Sistémico (RELES), we aimed to analyse the incidence of severe infection in the first two years of follow-up and how predictors of infection change during the course of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 282 patients. Markers of lupus activity, prednisone doses and immunosuppressive therapy were compared between patients with and without infections in the first and second year of the disease. Drug therapy administered during the first month of follow-up has been considered as a potential predictor of infections during the first year and medications administered during the first year have been considered potential predictors of infections during the second. RESULTS: Nineteen patients (6.4%) had a documented episode of major infection during the first year of follow-up and 16 patients (5.67%) during the second. The following variables were associated with infections during the first year: hypocomplementaemia at diagnosis ( p < 0.01), nephritis at diagnosis ( p = 0.03), SLEDAI score ( p < 0.01), prednisone >30 mg/day ( p = 0.01), methylprednisolone pulses ( p = 0.05) and mycophenolate use ( p = 0.02). The independent variables in the final model were hypocomplementaemia (odds ratio (OR) 4.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.96-20.20, p = 0.05) and a dose of prednisone >30 mg/day (OR 6.60, 95% CI 1.34-32.42, p = 0.02). The following variables were associated with infections during the second year: dose of prednisone > 7.5 mg/day ( p = 0.05), methylprednisolone pulses ( p = 0.07), duration of therapy with antimalarials ( p = 0.09), therapy with mycophenolate ( p = 0.01), therapy with cyclophosphamide ( p = 0.05). The independent variables in the final model were a dose of prednisone >7.5 mg/day (OR 4.52, 95% CI 0.99-21, p = 0.054) and duration of therapy with antimalarials as a protective factor (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.99-1.00, p = 0.053). CONCLUSIONS: The low incidence of early infections in the RELES cohort is partially explained by the extended use of antimalarials and by the general avoidance of prolonged high doses of prednisone. Patients with high baseline activity are at a higher risk of infection during the first months but therapy with medium-high doses of prednisone is the main predictor of infectious events. Thus, every effort should be made to limit oral glucocorticoid use from the very beginning of the SLE course.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is underestimated in Spain as in other European countries due to the polymorphism of its clinical manifestations and histopathological features discouraging doctors from suspecting leishmaniasis. Mucosal manifestations (ML) are misdiagnosed due to the fact that they often mimic cancer. OBJECTIVES: Given that leishmaniasis may be masked as different granulomatous diseases in Leishmania infantum endemic areas, the aim of this study was to verify this misdiagnosing and contributes to the improvement of CL/ML diagnosis. METHODS: A retrospective study involving formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue biopsies with histopathological features of granulomatous lesions of unknown origin (GLUO) detected in 17 patients. This study included 13 patients with CL that was used as positive controls, nine patients with other confirmed diseases used as negative controls and seven patients with histological features suggestive of CL or ML without confirmation. Molecular analysis was blindly performed using two different PCR techniques. RESULTS: The PCR detected 15 CL cases in which the diagnosis was neither clinically nor histologically suspected. Leishmaniasis was confirmed in seven suspected patients in whom the classical techniques failed to detect the parasite. L. infantum was identified in all cases. A systematic review of CL cases in GLUO patients from European countries identified 45 reported cases. CONCLUSIONS: In L. infantum endemic areas, a high percentage of GLUO are due to Leishmania infection. The main consequences are delayed diagnosis and underestimation of the real incidence. PCR performed on paraffin-embedded tissue proved to be a reliable tool for diagnosis of CL/ML and must be performed routinely in any granulomatous dermatitis, even when the morphological features are no stereotypical of leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a disfiguring and stigmatising disease occurring in more than 70 countries across the world including Spain and Morocco. The use of sensitive tests that can differentiate Leishmania species is advised. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the epidemiological scenario on the reliability of the PCR techniques and contribute to the selection of the most efficient one for CL diagnosis. METHODS: The sensitivities of parasitological methods and four PCRs were compared in cutaneous samples from 77 patients from Spanish (PSH) and Moroccan hospitals (PMH). Exudates and fresh or paraffin-embedded tissue biopsies were used. RESULTS: None of the PCRs used in this study allowed the diagnosis of all CL cases, showing also some drawbacks. Lmj4/Uni21-PCR displayed the best sensitivity with PMH, but it did not provide positive results in PSH with CL confirmed by other PCRs. Conversely, JW13/JW14-PCR and L. infantum-PCR-ELISA displayed good sensitivities with PSH that were not achieved with PMH. Nested-ITS-1-PCR did not show enough sensitivity with paraffin-embedded tissue biopsies. False-negative results were obtained in 19% of PSH due to unspecific hybridizations of ITS-1 primers with human chromosome1. CONCLUSIONS: PCR should be routinely used in patients with cutaneous lesions compatible with CL and furthermore, the combination of two PCR techniques is advisable. The selection of these PCRs will be influenced by the epidemiological scenario: In areas where L. infantum is endemic, the use of the PCR-ELISA joint with JW13/JW14-PCR seems an appropriate choice, whereas in areas such as Morocco, Lmj4/Uni21 and ITS-1 provide satisfactory results.

Burrows of the wild rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, a lagomorph that has been recently suggested as a Leishmania infantum reservoir, constitute an unspoilt biotope in phlebotomine studies in Europe. We hypothesize that Phlebotomus langeroni, a proven vector of L. infantum in North Africa, is associated with rabbits and may have been overlooked in Europe. Sandfly captures were carried out with CDC light traps in an L. infantum endemic area of southern Spain with a high density of lagomorphs and a large numbers of burrows. The stable, permanent, and highly abundant presence of P. langeroni was assessed. After morphological identification, this sandfly species was characterized by comparing it with P. perniciosus and other P. langeroni populations from North Africa through molecular techniques. P. langeroni had not been found in southern Spain to date, despite being a highly investigated area, except for this particular biotope. Its activity period turned out to begin in mid-July, ending in late October, accounting for a maximum activity during this month. This study shows that P. langeroni is associated with the existence of rabbit burrows and has been overlooked in Europe. L. infantum DNA was found in almost half of the female specimens (47.6%) captured inside a biotope where wild rabbits are infected as well.

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of different operational variables on fluoride (F-) removal from waters using lanthanum (La)-doped silica xerogels and the mechanisms involved in this process. Accordingly, four xerogels were synthesized, one acting as blank (X-B), two doped with LaCl3 and dried at different temperatures (X-LaCl and X-LaCl-M), and a fourth doped with La2O3 (X-LaO). The results show that fluorides are only removed when La-doped xerogels are utilized. In addition, X-LaCl yielded the highest adsorption capacity, removing 28.44% of the initial fluoride concentration at a solution pH of 7. Chemical characterization of materials confirmed that fluoride removal from waters is due to the precipitation of LaF3 on the surface of La-doped xerogels. The presence of dissolved organic matter on the aqueous solution also reduce the removal capacity of La xerogels. Finally, analysis of the influence of solution pH revealed that the adsorption capacity of all xerogels was highest at a solution pH of 7.

We present new experiments to study the formation of radiative shocks and the interaction between two counterpropagating radiative shocks. The experiments are performed at the Orion laser facility, which is used to drive shocks in xenon inside large aspect ratio gas cells. The collision between the two shocks and their respective radiative precursors, combined with the formation of inherently three-dimensional shocks, provides a novel platform particularly suited for the benchmarking of numerical codes. The dynamics of the shocks before and after the collision are investigated using point-projection x-ray backlighting while, simultaneously, the electron density in the radiative precursor was measured via optical laser interferometry. Modeling of the experiments using the 2D radiation hydrodynamic codes nym and petra shows very good agreement with the experimental results.

Objective To illustrate an unusual case of Listeria cerebral abscess. Material and methods A 32-year-old pregnant woman with thrombotic antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) received corticotherapy for two weeks due to hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet (HELLP) syndrome. After delivery she presented with neurological symptoms and fever. Results The MRI scan confirmed the presence of a brain abscess, and Listeria monocytogenes was isolated in blood cultures. After eight weeks of antibiotic treatment, the patient presented no sequelae. Conclusion L. monocytogenes should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with fever and neurological dysfunction, especially in those with a recent history of corticotherapy.

Objectives The objective of this study was to determine whether advanced MRI could provide biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). Methods Our prospective study included 28 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with primary central NPSLE, 22 patients without NPSLE and 20 healthy controls. We used visual scales to evaluate atrophy and white matter hyperintensities, voxel-based morphometry and Freesurfer to measure brain volume, plus diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) to assess white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) damage. We compared the groups and correlated MRI abnormalities with clinical data. Results NPSLE patients had less GM and WM than controls ( p = 0.042) in the fronto-temporal regions and corpus callosum. They also had increased diffusivities in the temporal lobe WM ( p < 0.010) and reduced fractional anisotropy in the right frontal lobe WM ( p = 0.018). High clinical scores, longstanding disease, and low serum C3 were associated with atrophy, lower fractional anisotropy and higher diffusivity in the fronto-temporal lobes. Antimalarial treatment correlated negatively with atrophy in the frontal cortex and thalamus; it was also associated with lower diffusivity in the fronto-temporal WM clusters. Conclusions Atrophy and microstructural damage in fronto-temporal WM and GM in NPSLE correlate with severity, activity and the time from disease onset. Antimalarial treatment seems to give some brain-protective effects.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis treatment remains challenging due to the absence of a satisfactory treatment. The screening of natural compounds is a valuable strategy in the search of new drugs against leishmaniasis. The sesquiterpene (-)-α-bisabolol is effective in vivo against visceral leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum, but its mechanism of action remains elusive. The aim of this study is to validate this promising compound against the causative species of Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis and to get an insight into its antileishmanial mode of action. The compound was evaluated on L. tropica promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes using bone marrow-derived macrophages and its cytotoxicity was evaluated on L929 fibroblasts. The reactive oxygen species generation was evaluated using a sensitive probe. Mitochondrial depolarization was assessed evaluating the fluorescence due to rhodamine 123 in a flow cytometer. Apoptosis was investigated by measuring the fluorescence due to annexin V and propidium iodide in a flow cytometer. The ultrastructure of treated promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes was analysed through transmission electron microscopy. (-)-α-Bisabolol was active against L. tropica intracellular amastigotes displaying an inhibitory concentration 50 % of 25.2 µM and showing low cytotoxicity. This compound induced time and dose-dependent oxidative stress, mitochondrial depolarization and phosphatidilserine externalization (a marker of apoptosis). These effects were noticed at a low concentration and short exposure time. In the ultrastructural analyses, the treated parasites showed mitochondrial disruption, presence of electron-dense structures and chromatin condensation. These results suggest that this natural compound induces oxidative stress and mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis on Leishmania without disturbing the plasma membrane.

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of leishmaniasis in a new area requires a well-established population of the sandfly vector species of the parasite. No autochthonous cases of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis have been detected in southwestern Europe, and Leishmania infantum is the only causative agent of leishmaniasis in this area. Phlebotomus sergenti, the main vector of Leishmania tropica, is commonly found in the Iberian Peninsula at sufficient densities to be able to act as a vector. It is characterised by high genetic diversity and classified in four mitochondrial lineages. Our aim was to analyse the composition and distribution of P. sergenti mitochondrial lineages in southwestern Europe given the possibility of phenotypic differences of biomedical importance between them. METHODS: Sandflies were captured in the Iberian Peninsula and on the Canary and Balearic Islands. Mitochondrial lineage identification of 137 P. sergenti was performed using a novel PCR-RFLP that avoids the necessity of gene sequencing. RESULTS: Two lineages were evidenced, the typical Iberian one (lineage I) and another, held in common with North Africa (lineage III), that show a distinctive distribution. P. sergenti lineage I shows a better correlation to the bioclimatic diversity in southwestern Europe. Conversely, P. sergenti lineage III prefers warmer temperatures and less precipitation, which are typical of the Mediterranean. CONCLUSION: Lineage I seems to have adaptive advantages given its wider tolerance to temperature and altitude than lineage III, and it would seem more suitable to lead a potential geographical expansion towards the rest of Europe.
