RESUMEN

Destruction of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in liquid phase and in a batch reactor was studied using ruthenium catalysts over alumina support, modified with different cerium loadings. Ce loading increment causes an increase in the particle size from 1.26 nm to 2.3 nm, enhancing the MTBE oxidation (at 150 °C), and the selectivity toward CO2. The high catalytic activity of Ru/ACe10 is attributed to the species Ce4+-O2--M that could favor the oxygen transfer between the catalyst surface and the adsorbed species by a redox mechanism. Thus, CeOx plays an important role in both enhancing the affinity between MTBE and catalyst during MTBE adsorption and promoting the catalytic activity for MTBE oxidation.

RESUMEN

Despite the profound impact that skeletal muscle disorders may pose for the daily activities of wild terrestrial and marine mammals, such conditions have been rarely described in cetaceans. In this study, the authors aimed to determine the nature and prevalence of skeletal muscle lesions in small and large odontocetes and mysticetes ( n = 153) from 19 different species. A macroscopic evaluation of the epaxial muscle mass and a histologic examination of the longissimus dorsi muscle were performed in all cases. The only macroscopically evident change was variable degrees of atrophy of the epaxial muscles ( longissimus dorsi, multifidus, spinalis) in emaciated specimens. The histopathological study revealed single or combined morphological changes in 91.5% of the cases. These changes included the following: degenerative lesions (75.2%), muscle atrophy (37.9%), chronic myopathic changes (25.5%), parasitic infestation (9.2%), and myositis (1.9%). The skeletal muscle is easily sampled during a necropsy and provides essential microscopic information that reflects both local and systemic conditions. Thus, skeletal muscle should be systematically sampled, processed, and examined in all stranded cetaceans.

RESUMEN

The literature reports an annual incidence of 5,900 cases of anal cancer in the developed countries. These involve three different anatomic zones: carcinoma of the anal canal, perianal carcinoma (formerly known as carcinoma of the anal margin, located at a distance of less than 5cm from the anal margin), and carcinoma of the perianal skin (at a distance greater than 5cm from the anal margin). Basal cell carcinoma of the perianal region is an uncommon tumor (0.27% of all diagnosed basal cell carcinomas) that in the majority of cases is treated by resection with disease-free margins. It must be differentiated from the basaloid and epidermoid variants of carcinoma, given that it has good outcome and its spread potential is practically null.

RESUMEN

A diagnosis of mixed testicular neoplasia in a short beaked common dolphin Delphinus delphis involving a Sertoli cell tumor, an interstitial (Leydig) cell tumor and a seminoma is presented. Lymphatic spread of the Sertoli cell tumor to an adjacent retroperitoneal lymph node was observed. Testicular neoplasms have been infrequently reported in marine mammals. Demonstration of clinical signs and further health implications is extremely challenging when dealing with non accessible wildlife species, such as dolphins. However, metastatic potential for these neoplastic conditions should be considered.

RESUMEN

This short communication reports the clinical, ultrasonographic and histopathological findings in a cat with atresia of the uterine cervix and mucometra. After 6 months of continuous oestrous behaviour, a remarkable abdominal enlargement was observed in a 14-year-old queen. A presumptive diagnosis of mucometra was concluded after the ultrasound evaluation and based on clinical signs and blood analyses. Ovariohysterectomy revealed a notable symmetrical distension (4-5 cm in diameter) of both uterine horns that were filled with fluid (690 ml); microbiological analyses confirmed the aseptic nature of the uterine fluid. Ovarian follicular cysts and cystic subsurface epithelial structures, >1.5 cm in diameter, were present in both ovaries and no corpora lutea were observed. Gross and microscopic evaluation of the uterus confirmed the development of cystic endometrial hyperplasia and the absence of an internal cervical os. The endometrial hyperplasia and mucometra could have developed as a consequence of repeated oestrogenic stimulation.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The current treatment of complex ventral hernias involves muscle closure with components separation techniques and mesh placement. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the immediate postoperative changes in the intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), and lung indicators after treatment of complex ventral hernias with the transversus abdominis reléase (TAR) technique. METHODS: All patients with complex ventral hernias treated between November 28th, 2016 and October 6th, 2021 were initially included. We excluded patients with lung and/or heart comorbidities. A total of 43 patients were studied, measuring IAP, lung compliance, pulmonary plateau pressure (PPP), and end-tidal CO2 before and after surgical treatment. RESULTS: Median IAP increased from 5 to 9 mmHg (p < 0.0001), and PPP from 11 to 12 mmHg (p = 0.004). Increased body mass index (BMI) was associated to a PPP increase above normal values. Postoperative changes were not different in patients receiving preoperative preparation with botulinum toxin. CONCLUSION: After complex ventral hernia closure, there is an immediate impact on IAP and PPP, the latter more frequent in patients with the highest BMI, and this may not be prevented by the preoperative administration of botulinum toxin.

RESUMEN

In this work the effect of noble metal on the photodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid herbicide using TiO2 as support was studied. The metals and concentration were: Rh, Ru, Pt and Au and 1, 0.98, 1.89, and 1.91 wt% respectively. Rhodium was taken as reference for this experiment. The samples were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption spectra, N2 physisorption (BET Specific Surface Area), High Annular Angle Analysis Darkfield (HAADF) and Transmission Electron Microscopy Scanning (STEM), H2 chemisorption, optical emission spectroscopy with inductive coupling plasma analysis (ICP-OES), solid fluorescence, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and OH quantification. The presence of the anatase crystalline phase was mostly confirmed in all samples. The band gap decreased with the presence of metal (from 3.24 to 2.92 eV). The specific area was a function of the metal particle size. The metal particle diameter showed the following sequence Pt > Ru > Au > Rh. By XPS, TiO2 does not manifest changes in oxidation states, but when impregnated with metals, only Pt shows the highest abundance of any oxidized state (Pt2+). The presence of metal reveals less electron-hole recombination compared with titanium oxide. The results of photocatalytic activity showed that Pt and Rh are the two metals with the highest mineralization (99.0 and 98.3%, respectively).

RESUMEN

Multiple diverticula of the right and left cardiac ventricular walls were incidental findings at necropsy in a juvenile, male, mixed-breed dog with no clinical history of heart disease. Each saccular diverticulum had a narrow communication into the corresponding ventricular chamber. Histologically, the diverticular walls consisted mainly of collagen without elastin fibers and atrophic cardiomyocytes. No inflammation or other lesions were associated with the diverticula or the rest of the myocardium. Based on the history and pathologic findings, a diagnosis of congenital biventricular fibrous diverticula was made.

RESUMEN

Buschke-Löwenstein tumor is a slowly growing neoplasm with high potential of local invasion. We described a 29 year-old female with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who was surgically treated for a Buschke- Löwenstein tumor with a wide local excision, bilateral gluteal flaps and loop ileostomy. At 12 months follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence. Despite it does not metastasize, Buschke-Löwenstein tumor has a high recurrence rate and a 50% risk of malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma. Surgery is considered the treatment of choice for this disease. Podophyllin, immunotherapy, interferon and radiotherapy are other treatments with a limited therapeutic response.

RESUMEN

Niche conservatism theory suggests that recently diverged sister species share the same ecological niche. However, if the ecological niche evolves as part of the speciation process, the ecological pattern could be useful for recognizing cryptic species. In a broad sense systematists agree that the niche characters could be used for species differentiation. However, to date such characters have been ignored. We used the genetic algorithm for rule-set production for modelling the ecological niche as a means of inferring ecological divergence in allopatric populations of muroid rodents for which taxonomic identity is uncertain. Our results show that niche differentiation is significant in most of the identified phylogroups. The differentiation is likely associated with natural evolutionary units, which can be identified by applying species concepts based on phylogenetic and ecological patterns (e.g. phylogenetic, cohesive, evolutionary). Even so, the role of the niche partition within phylogenetic reconstruction may be a limited one.

RESUMEN

Ten spontaneous mammary gland tumors affecting guinea pigs (GP) were analyzed histologically and immunohistochemically. Histologically, 3 were benign (2 simple adenomas and 1 benign mixed tumor) and 7 were malignant (1 simple solid carcinoma and 6 simple tubulopapillary carcinomas). Immunohistochemical data revealed the glandular immunoprofile of all the tumors and suggested their ductal origin on the basis of cytokeratin 20 expression. Interestingly, cytokeratin 7 was detected in basal/myoepithelial cells. Further, all tumors were positive for type alpha estrogen and progesterone receptors, suggesting a role for steroid hormones in the development of these neoplasias in GP. This article describes the morphological and immunohistochemical features of the normal mammary gland and spontaneous mammary gland tumors in GP.

RESUMEN

The costs of bird song incurred in a diversity of ways may result in trade-offs in the production and maintenance of elaborate plumage ornaments. In this paper, we examine evolutionary trade-offs between acoustic and visual signalling in trogon birds (Trogonidae). Using multiple regressions with phylogenetically independent contrasts, we found that interspecific variation in male plumage coloration was not significantly predicted by song traits (reduced by PCA) or altitude. Although plumage coloration is expected to decrease with increases in song elaboration, both groups of variables were not related. Given that song and plumage coloration traits are likely targets of sexual selection, we also examined their relationships with sexual plumage dimorphism. We found that male carotenoid-derived coloration was positively related to sexual plumage dimorphism, suggesting that sexual selection on male carotenoid-derived coloration may be stronger than on melanin- or structurally based coloration, or than on acoustic traits. Comparative studies on other bird families accounting for the effects of phylogeny as well as environmental covariates are required to test the generality of our findings in trogons.

RESUMEN

To correlate the clinical course of mycoplasma mastitis with its immune response, right mammary glands of 15 lactating goats were inoculating with 10(10) colony-forming units (cfu) of Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma). Before sacrificing the animals at 5, 15 or 45 days post-inoculation (dpi), blood Ma antibody titres and milk mycoplasma colony and somatic cell counts were monitored. Ma colonised the mammary gland and milk counts increased to over 10(12)cfu/ml within 5 dpi. During this period, an innate immune response involving neutrophils and macrophages was observed, and Ma antigen appeared in the degenerated acinar epithelium. From 7 dpi, a specific antibody response coincided with reduced viable mycoplasmas in milk. The humoral immune response was limited; by 37 dpi, all animals scored negative for anti-Ma antibodies, and around 10(8)cfu/ml were shed. Results indicate an early immune response to Ma inoculation unable to control mycoplasmal invasion. An ensuing humoral response, despite reducing the mycoplasma burden, leads to chronic, persistent infection.

RESUMEN

Cu, Ni, CuO and NiO catalysts, prepared by wet impregnation with urea and supported on γ-Al2O3, CeO2, and Al2O3-CeO2, were evaluated for Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation (CWAO) of phenol in a batch reactor under a milder condition (120 °C and 10 bar O2). The synthesized samples, at their calcined and/or their reduced form, were characterized by XRD, H2-TPR, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM-EDS and DR-UV-Vis to explain the differences observed in their catalytic activity towards the studied reaction. The influence of the support on the efficiency of CWAO of phenol at 120 °C and 10 bar of pure oxygen has been examined and compared over nickel and copper species. The SEM-EDS results reveal that the spherical crystalline Cu and Ni were successfully deposited on the surface of γ-Al2O3, CeO2, Al2O3-CeO2 within 16-90 nm and that they were highly homogeneously dispersed. It was found that catalysts prepared from impregnation solutions of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O and Ni(NO3)2·6H2O with urea addition had different textural characteristics and degrees of dispersion of Cu and Ni species. The urea addition in the traditional wet impregnation method was essential to improve the reducibility and degree of dispersion in Ni, and to a lesser extent, in Cu. According to the characterization analysis of H2-TPR and UV-VIS RD a structure-activity relationship can be determined. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and GC analyses confirmed the effect of calcined and reduced species for Cu and Ni applied to the catalytic oxidation of phenol, showing their significant impact in the final performance of the catalyst.

RESUMEN

Three canaries showing feather loss on legs, dorsum, neck, and head, and hyperkeratosis on the feet were sacrificed because of their poor corporal condition and submitted to the Unit of Histology and Anatomic Pathology at the Veterinary School of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Histologically, skin revealed pronounced epidermal and follicular infundibular hyperplasia associated with orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis. Numerous fungal spores were observed on the stratum corneum of the epidermis and within feather follicles, associated with destruction of the feathers. This fungus was identified as Mucor ramosissimus. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first report of dermatitis and feather loss associated with Mucor ramosissimus, not only in canaries but also in birds.

RESUMEN

This report describes a malignant schwannoma in the diaphragm of a 2-year-old goat. The immunohistochemical and histological features indicated a diagnosis of malignant schwannoma rather than neurofibrosarcoma. The diaphragm represents an unusual location for neoplasia in both domestic animals and human beings. A possible anatomical origin from the phrenic nerve is discussed.

RESUMEN

This report describes the histological and immunohistochemical features of multicentric, benign, epithelial inclusions (BEIs) in a free-ranging, adult, female Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus). The differential diagnoses included ectopic hamartomatous epithelial inclusions, non-Müllerian choristoma, Müllerian choristoma and low-grade metastatic carcinoma/mesothelioma. The most likely diagnosis of such BEIs was multicentric, embolic, reactive mesothelium, as suggested by cytomorphological and immunophenotypical features of the BEIs, the occurrence of focal pleural rupture and the immunophenotype of the pleural mesothelium. The former represents a pathological condition not previously reported in a marine mammal species, rarely described in animals, and relatively infrequently recognized in man.

RESUMEN

Two adult ostriches developed anorexia, prostration, and severe hemorrhagic diarrhea, dying 24 hr after the onset of clinical signs. On postmortem examination, the cecal mucosa showed locally extensive areas of hemorrhages and fibrino-necrotic typhlitis with a white-yellowish material covering the mucosal surface. Multiple serosal petequial hemorrhages and fibrinous peritonitis were present. Histologic examination revealed an intense mononuclear infiltration in the lamina propria and submucosa of the cecum and extensive superficial necrosis associated with fibrin and serocellular deposits. Several gram-negative bacterial colonies were observed within the necrotic areas. Samples from intestinal lesions were collected, and pure growth of Escherichia fergusonii was obtained. Escherichia fergusonii is a member of Enterobacteriaceae, closely related to Escherichia coli and Shigella sp., established as a new species of the genus Escherichia in 1985. In veterinary medicine, E. fergusonii has been reported in calves and sheep from dinical cases suggestive of salmonellosis. To our knowledge, this report represents the first description of E. fergusonii associated with enteritis in ostrich.
