RESUMEN

BACKGROUND We used fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) technology to investigate spontaneous cerebral activity in patients with monocular blindness (MB) and in healthy controls (HCs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty MB patient and 15 HCs were included in this study. All subjects were scanned by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The independent sample t test and chi-squared test were applied to analyze demographics of MB patients and HCs. The 2-sample t test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to identify the difference in average fALFF values between MB patients and HCs. Pearson's correlation analysis was applied to explore the relationship between the average fALFF values of brain areas and clinical behavior in the MB group. RESULTS MB patients had lower fALFF values in the left anterior cingulate and higher fALFF values in the left precuneus and right and left inferior parietal lobes than in HCs. Moreover, the mean fALFF values of MB patients in the left anterior cingulate had negative correlations with the anxiety scale score (r=-0.825, P<0.001) and the depression scale score (r=-0.871, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our study found that MB patients had abnormal spontaneous activities in the visual and vision-related regions. The finding of abnormal neuronal activity helps to reveal the underlying neuropathologic mechanisms of vision loss.

RESUMEN

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) appears to be a high risk of spread. This research investigated the correlation between a different range of clinical features and intraocular metastasis (IOM) in RCC patients and attempted to determine potential risk factors of RCC patients with IOM. In the study, there are a total of 351 patients with RCC that were recruited between May 1994 and May 2016. The differences between RCC patients with IOM and RCC patients with non-IOM (NIOM) were evaluated by the chi-squared test and Student t test. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to determine risk factors. Finally, the value of diagnosis for RCC patients with IOM was assessed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Eighteen individuals were identified with IOM. There were no significant differences that were detected in alkaline phosphatase (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), cancer antigen 153 (CA-153), cancer antigen 199 (CA-199), calcium, age, primary tumor site, and histopathological subtypes between the two groups. But there was a difference in terms of gender (P < 0.05). The IOM group exhibited significantly higher neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and lower hemoglobin (Hb) values compared to the NIOM group (P < 0.05, respectively). Binary logistic regression identified NSE and Hb as significant risk factors of IOM for RCC patient (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). The ROC curve analysis indicated that the area under the curve (AUC) values of NSE and Hb were 0.694 and 0.749, while cut-off values were 49.5 ng/mL and 102.5 g/L, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of NSE were 72.2% and 66.4%, respectively, while those of Hb were 72.2% and 74.2%, respectively. The result reveals that NSE and Hb represent promising significant risk factors of IOM for RCC patients. Notably, Hb is more reliable than NSE in distinguishing case of IOM from NIOM in patients with RCC.

PURPOSE: To investigate differences in the functional connectivity (FC) of the primary visual cortex between patients with corneal ulcer (CU) and healthy controls (HCs) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with CU and 30 HCs were closely matched in terms of sex, age, and level of education. Two-sample t-test, receiver operating characteristic curve, and Pearson's correlation coefficient analyses were used to determine the differences in FC between the two groups, the mean FC value of patients with CU and HCs, and the correlation between FC signal values and clinical manifestations in different brain regions of patients. RESULTS: The CU group showed significantly elevated FC in the left and right middle frontal gyri and lower FC with the right cuneus compared with the HC group. In addition, the FC of the right cingulate and left superior frontal gyri also increased in the CU group. The receiver operating characteristic curve revealed high diagnostic value in those brain regions. CONCLUSION: CU involves aberrant FC of the primary visual cortex in different brain areas, including visual-related and cognitive-related regions. This finding may unveil the underlying neural mechanisms of impaired visual function in CU.

PURPOSE: The present study was attempted to compare the differences in gray matter volume (GMV) between the acute eye pain (EP) patients and the healthy controls (HCs) using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), and to explore the relationship with clinical features and behavioral performance. METHODS: A total of 24 patients (17 males, 7 females) with acute EP and 24 (17 males, 7 females) age-, sex-, and education-matched HCs were recruited from the Ophthalmology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans were conducted in all subjects. We analyzed the original three-dimensional (3D) T1 brain images by VBM and compared the GMV values with the HCs. The acute EP patients can be distinguished from the HCs by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: Compared with HCs, the acute EP patients had significantly lower GMV values in the brain regions of the left cerebellum posterior lobe, the left limbic lobe, the right insula, the left insula, the left thalamus, the left caudate, and the right cuneus. In addition, the WMV values of the whole brain in acute EP patients decreased slightly. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrated that the acute EP patients showed an abnormal reduction in GMV in some brain regions, which might provide valuable information for further exploration of underlying neural mechanisms. These abnormal brain regions may reflect the functional disorders of acute EP patients in somatosensory, motor, cognitive functions, and so on. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: The VBM study provides a diagnostic method for identifying the cause of acute EP, additionally, a novel direction was presented for further exploration of underlying neural mechanisms of acute EP.

RESUMEN

The photo-dissociations of oxyhemoglobin of several mammals, such as human, bovine, pig, horse, and rabbit, have been studied. By means of optical pump-probe technique, the quantum yields for photo-dissociation of these oxyhemoglobin have been determined at pH 7 and 20 degrees C. A nanosecond laser at 532 nm is used as the pumping source, and a xenon lamp through a monochrometer provides a probe light at 432 nm. The experimental results show that the quantum yields of these mammalian oxyhemoglobin are different from each other, especially for that of rabbit. By analyzing the amino acid sequences and tetramer structures as well as the flexibility and hydrophobicity of the different hemoglobin, possible explanations for the differences are proposed.
