RESUMEN

Diet and lifestyle choices, notably the Western-type diet, are implicated in oxidative stress and inflammation, factors that elevate the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In contrast, the Mediterranean of diet, rich in antioxidants, appears to have protective effects against these risks. This article highlights the dual role of diet in generating molecular hydrogen ( H 2 ) in the gut, and H 2 's subsequent influence on the pathophysiology and prevention of CVD and T2DM. Dietary fiber, flavonoids, and probiotics contribute to the production of liters of H 2 in the gut, functioning as antioxidants to neutralize free radicals and dampen inflammation. In the last two decades, mounting evidence has demonstrated that both endogenously produced and exogenously administered H 2 , whether via inhalation or H 2 -rich water (HRW), have potent anti-inflammatory effects across a wide range of biochemical and pathophysiological processes. Recent studies indicate that H 2 can neutralize hydroxyl and nitrosyl radicals, acting as a cellular antioxidant, thereby reducing oxidative stress and inflammation-leading to a significant decline in CVDs and metabolic diseases. Clinical and experimental research support the therapeutic potential of H 2 interventions such as HRW in managing CVDs and metabolic diseases. However, larger studies are necessary to verify the role of H 2 therapy in the management of these chronic diseases.

RESUMEN

The monkeypox virus (MPXV), responsible for human disease, has historically been limited to the African countries, with only a few isolated instances reported elsewhere in the world. Nevertheless, in recent years, there have been occurrences of monkeypox in regions where the disease is typically absent, which has garnered global interest. Within a period of less than four months, the incidence of MPXV infections has surged to over 48,000 cases, resulting in a total of 13 deaths. This chapter has addressed the genetics of the pox virus, specifically the human monkeypox virus, and its interaction with the immune systems of host organisms. The present chapter is skillfully constructed, encompassing diagnostic methodologies that span from traditional to developing molecular techniques. Furthermore, the chapter provides a succinct analysis of the therapeutic methods employed, potential future developments, and the various emerging difficulties encountered in illness management.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To study the clinical and the genetic association of 5-HTTVNTR and the 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms in women with FMS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: 105 FMS patients and 105 controls were enrolled in the study. Polymerase chain method was used to analyse the 5-HTTLPR & 5-HTTVNTR gene polymorphism. The psychopathology status of the 105 FMS patients and 105 healthy controls was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) questionnaires. RESULTS: Results: In FMS patients and controls, the 10/10, 10/12, and 12/12 genotypes of the 5-HTTVNTR polymorphism were found in 3.8% and 2.9%, 20% and 15.2%, and 76.28% and 81.90%, respectively. Additionally, the L/L, S/L, and S/S genotypes of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism were found in 4.8% and 2.9%, 36.2% and 40%, 59% and 57.1%, in FMS patients and healthy controls, respectively. There were no significant differences in the frequency of genotypes between FMS patients and controls. There were no significant differences in the BDI and the SCL-90-R scores according to the serotonin transporter genotypes. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: We found no significant difference between 5-HTT gene polymorphism (5-HTTVNTR and 5-HTTLPR) and the psychiatric test results (P>0.05) in FMS patients. Hence, we conclude that serotonin gene polymorphism (5-HTTLPR & 5-HTTVNTR) is not associated with FMS in north Indian women. Our results suggests that the serotonin transporter polymorphism does not seem to be a susceptibility factor for FMS.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) has different stages and includes pre-HF (PHF), a state of high risk of developing myocardial dysfunction and advanced CHF. Some major behavioral risk factors of PHF might predispose to biological risk factors such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and cardiomyopathy. These risk factors damage the myocytes leading to fibrosis, apoptosis, cardiac hypertrophy, along with alterations in cardiomyocyte' size and shape. A condition of physiological subcellular remodeling resulting into a pathological state might be developed, conducting to PHF. Both PHF and heart failure (HF) are associated with the activation of phospholipases and protease, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and development of intra-cellular free Ca2+  [Ca2+ ]i overloading to an elevation in diastolic [Ca2+ ]i . Simultaneously, cardiac gene expression is activated leading to further molecular, structural and biochemical changes of the myocardium. The sub-cellular remodeling may be intimately involved in the transition of cardiac hypertrophy to heart failure. 2D- and 3D-speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) have been used to quantify regional alterations of longitudinal strain and area strain, through their polar projection, which permits a further assessment of both sites and degrees of myocardial damage. The examination of strain can identify sub-clinical cardiac dysfunction or cardiomyocyte remodeling. During remodeling of the myocardium cardiac strain is attenuated, therefore it is an indicator of disease assessment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To determine the clinical and the genetic association of the COMT rs4680 SNP in women with FMS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: Extracted DNA from peripheral blood samples were utilized as template for the PCR and RFLP analysis. RESULTS: Results: A significant difference was found in the distribution of the COMT genotype between FMS patients and controls (P<0.05). The frequency of GG, AG, AA genotypes were 12%, 72%, 21% in FMS patients and 32%, 62%, 11% in controls. The clinical features of FMS reveal that FIQR and the severity of pain measured by VAS were significantly associated with the COMT rs4680 SNP (P=0.042; P=0.016). The co-dominant model for GG verse v. AG genotype (P=0.004) and AG v. AA genotype (P=0.002) has shown to be high risk for FMS. An increased risk of FMS in the dominant model for (AG+AA) v. GG genotype (P=0.001) and no significant difference was found between (GG+AG) v. AA genotype (P=0.08) in the recessive model. The result indicated that A allele considerably increase the risk of FMS (P=0.004) in comparison to the G allele. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: AA genotype and A allele of the COMT rs4680 SNP were significantly associated with severity in FMS patients and also plays a significant role in the clinical manifestation of this disease.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: The present study was carried out on patients recovered from COVID-19, including those patients who have taken vaccine and those who have not. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The patients were recruited via an online panel and surveyed at different regions of Iraq from June 1, 2021, to August 30, 2021. RESULTS: Results: Our results demonstrated that the highest percentage of people recommended Pfizer vaccine followed by Sinopharm, while AstraZeneca vaccine was least recommended. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The efficacy of different vaccines differed significantly; the highest effectiveness was observed with Pfizer vaccine followed by AstraZeneca and Sinopharm with effectiveness ranging from 94%, 89%, and 74%, respectively. Further, the highest percentage of re-infected patients was observed with Sinopharm vaccine followed by Astra Zeneca and Pfizer vaccine, respectively. Also, the highest percent of re-infection with masking used was seen in the case of Sinopharm vaccine followed by AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccine. Although, we observed that post-vaccination symptoms were lowest than pre-vaccination symptoms, the percent of asymptomatic cases post-vaccination was highest than pre-vaccination cases for all vaccines.

OBJECTIVE: This single-arm real-world observation aims to examine the effects of empagliflozin (EMPA) on coronary risk factors among subjects with known diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of 63 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus, receiving EMPA were drawn for this study. Of 63 patients with diabetes, 6 were excluded, and the remaining 57 received EMPA (25 mg/day) for 24 weeks. Clinical data, dietary intakes, and physical activity were assessed by validated questionnaires. RESULTS: Treatment with EMPA was associated with significant decline in fasting and 2-hour post-prandial blood glucose and Hb1c indicating that this agent has potential antidiabetic effects. Pro-inflammatory cytokines; C-reactive protein, TNF-α, and interleukin-6 showed significant reduction after treatment with EMPA, compared to baseline levels. Apart from these changes, parameters of oxidative stress, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, malondialdehyde, and diene conjugates as well as uric acid, showed a significant decline with an increase in antioxidant vitamins A, E, and C and beta-carotene as well as nitrite. There was a significant decline in serum uric acid, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), with a non-significant reduction in body weight and body mass index as well as in waist circumference of modest significance, after intervention of 12 weeks compared to baseline levels. Total cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides showed non-significant decline compared to baseline levels. CONCLUSION: It is possible that EMPA administration can cause a significant decline in pro-inflammatory cytokines along with blood glucose, Hb1c, oxidative stress, uric acid, blood pressures, and ACE with an increase in antioxidant vitamins and nitrite. Randomized, controlled intervention trials would be necessary to confirm our findings.

Curcumin has a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may suppress inflammatory component of atherosclerosis. It has been demonstrated that curcumin derivatives can reduce the formation of arterial fatty streaks in cholesterol-fed rabbits. Therefore in this study we evaluated the protective effects of Curcumin on the progression of atherosclerosis. 20 mature rabbits were included for this study; they were randomly divided into four groups each of 5. Group 1: (normal control) were fed corn pellets diet and tab water, group 2: (high cholesterol diet control) were kept on cholesterol rich diet (2% cholesterol) and tab water. Group 3: (cholesterol and rosuvastatin treated group) were kept on cholesterol rich diet (2% cholesterol) and 2.5 mg/kg/day Rosuvastatin dispersed in DW and given orally, group 4: (cholesterol and curcumin treated group) were kept on cholesterol rich diet (2% cholesterol) and 0.2% curcumin added with corn pellets. The study continued for 12 weeks then assessment of serum level of high sensitive C-reactive protein, ICAM1, VCAM1 and PCSK9 was carried out at the end of the study. Total antioxidant activity of curcumin was also determined. Histopathological examination of aortic tissues for atherosclerotic changes was also carried out. Atherogenic (cholesterol rich diet) induced an increment in serum level of TC, LDL, VLDL and TG with concomitant decrement in serum level of HDL and increased atherogenic index. Treatment with curcumin produced substantial reduction in serum TC, LDL, TG with no effect on HDL level thus decreased atherogenic index. Rabbits treated with curcumin showed a significant reduction in the serum level of high sensitive C-reactive protein, ICAM1, VCAM, PCSK9 serum expression and aortic total antioxidant capacity. Curcumin has a potent anti-inflammatory and anti- oxidant effects against atherosclerosis so exerts a protective role by decreasing lipid oxidation and inflammatory markers.

Cadmium (Cd), poisoning has been reported from all around the World, causing many deaths annually. Cd is a toxic heavy metal, and is widely present in environment. It has been reported that chronic Cd exposure is associated with kidney disease, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Smoking causes exposure to significantly higher Cd levels in humans. Tobacco smoke transports Cd into the lungs. Blood then transport it to the rest of the body where it increases effects by potentiating Cd that is already present from Cd-rich food. Other high exposures of Cd can occur with people, who live near hazardous waste sites, or factories that release Cd into the air and people who work in the metal refinery industry. Breathing of Cd can severely damage the lungs and may even cause death. Multiple studies have shown an association between environmental exposure to hazardous chemicals including toxic metals and obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. At the same time, the existing data on the impact of Cd exposure on obesity and diabetes are contradictory. On the converse, results of epidemiologic studies linking Cd exposure and Osteoporosis, overweight or obesity are far less consistent and even conflicting, also depending on differences in exposure levels. In turn, laboratory studies demonstrated that Cd adversely affects adipose tissue physiopathology through several mechanisms, thus contributing to increased insulin resistance and enhancing diabetes. However, intimate biological mechanisms linking Cd exposure with human diseases are still to be adequately investigated. Therefore, the aim of the present review was to explore the impact of Cd exposure and status on the risk of Cd in human diseases.

PURPOSE: This retrospective observational study aimed to comprehensively analyse the clinical profile and treatment modalities of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who were treated at a tertiary care centre. METHODS: The study included a cohort of 300 individuals who sought medical care at the hospital from January 2023 to January 2024. The analysis primarily examined parameters such as the mean number of anti-diabetic medications per prescription, the proportion of various categories of anti-diabetic medications prescribed, the predominant class and type of anti-diabetic medications prescribed, and the proportion of anti-diabetic medications prescribed from the essential drug lists. RESULTS: The age distribution demonstrated that 52.0% of participants were above 60 years old, showcasing a substantial elderly representation. Gender distribution emphasized a male predominance at 65.0%, highlighting potential gender-specific implications in type II diabetes. The blood profile analysis of patients with T2DM revealed a range of values for key parameters. Fasting blood glucose levels ranged from a minimum of 101 mg/dL to a maximum of 359 mg/dL, with a mean of 180.01 mg/dl. The comprehensive analysis of anti-diabetic drug utilization, based on the total number of units prescribed, sheds light on the diverse treatment approaches employed for managing diabetes mellitus (DM). Insulin, comprising 31.3% of the total units, plays a pivotal role in glycemic control, with both regular and biphasic formulations contributing significantly at 26.3% and 9.3%, respectively. Among the 300 patients, the overall utilization of anti-diabetic drugs reveals that 38.7% of individuals are using a combination of insulin with oral anti-diabetic drugs, while 61.3% are relying on oral anti-diabetic drugs alone. The most frequently prescribed drug combinations for diabetes management include sulphonylurea with biguanides, emerging as the most prevalent combination with 22 occurrences. CONCLUSION: The study's findings contribute valuable insights into the socio-demographic profiles and anti-diabetic drug utilization patterns among diabetes patients.

This article explores the Human Monkeypox Virus (MPV), a contagious virus that causes disease in both vertebrates and insects. It originated in Denmark in 1958 and expanded beyond Africa during the 1970s. The virus was initially detected in the United States in 2003 following the hospitalisation of a toddler who had been bitten by a prairie dog. The article examines the identification of the virus, its categorization into two genetic groups with dif-ferent levels of harmfulness, and its genetic changes over time due to specific influences. Additionally, it investigates the immunological reaction to MPXV, encompassing both the innate and adaptive systems. The essay also addresses the diagnostic difficulties presented by MPXV's resemblance to other orthopoxviruses and the progress made in molecular diagnos-tics. The paper analyses different therapeutic interventions, such as tecovirimat, an antiviral medication, and JYNNEOS, a vaccine, in terms of their efficacy, potential drawbacks, and the difficulties encountered in managing outbreaks. The future outlook emphasises the ne-cessity of inventive research methodologies, worldwide monitoring, and individualised med-ical treatments to counteract the dissemination of MPXV and alleviate its consequences on public health.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterised by diffuse muscle pain, poor sleep and unrelenting fatigue. Individuals with FMS may also experience headaches, anxiety, depression, poor memory, numbness and tingling in the extremities, cold hands and feet, irritable bowel syndrome and lowered immune function. FMS is a common chronic pain syndrome of unknown etiology and limited treatment options. Previous studies have reported oxidative stress in FMS patients, but the results were inconsistent. Oxidative stress and nitric oxide is involved in FMS pathophysiology, however, it is still not clear whether oxidative stress abnormalities are the cause of FMS. There are several studies indicating oxidative stress in patients with FMS. Oxidant (Malondialdehyde) and antioxidant (Superoxide dismutase) balances were found to be changed in FMS patients. Furthermore, increased free radical levels may be responsible for the development of FMS and free radical-mediated oxidative stress including inflammatory cytokines may also play important roles in its pathogenesis. Moreover, oxidative stress is supposed to be increased in patients with FMS which is related to the severity of FMS symptoms. Therefore, it is important to understand whether the oxidative stress parameters are involved in FMS and what is the relationship between these and antioxidants in FMS patients. In this review we will elucidate the importance of oxidative stress and antioxidants and its possible relationship with FMS. Moreover, as metal toxicity is also reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of FMS, therefore we will also try to establish the role of toxic metals in the pathogenesis of FMS.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patients have disturbed sleep patterns which may lead to altered circadian rhythm in serum cortisol secretion. The aim of this study was to assess circadian changes, if any, in serum cortisol levels in female patients with FMS. Cortisol levels were estimated every 6 h during 24 h period; in 40 female patients satisfying ACR criteria for FMS (Age 36.4 ± 9.9), and 40 healthy females without FMS (Age 33.8 ± 11.1). A significant difference in the night time serum cortisol level was observed among the patients and control groups (patients, 12.9 ± 9.7 controls 5.8 ± 3.0; p < 0.01). However, no significant difference was found in serum cortisol levels in patients and control groups in the morning (patients, 28.4 ± 13.2 controls, 27.6 ± 14.5; p > 0.05), afternoon (patients, 14.4 ± 5.6 controls, 14.0 ± 6.6; p > 0.05) and evening hours (patients, 10.9 ± 5.8 controls, 8.9 ± 3.6; p > 0.05). It could be concluded that there is an abnormality in circadian secretion of cortisol in female FMS patients.

Atherosclerosis as a chronic inflammatory disorder is accompanied with oxidative stress which causes a high morbidity and mortality. Adhesion molecules, including intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), P-selectin, and E-selectin, are amongst the most important contributors in atherosclerosis. In such cases, dietary interventions with functional foods containing natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory constituents are of a great interest. Citrus fruits are rich sources of flavonoids as natural pigments with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aims to review current evidence regarding the role of citrus flavonoids in the management of atherosclerosis with a focus on their effect on adhesion molecules. Electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched with the names of adhesion molecules and flavonoids from inception until January 2023. The included articles highly support the beneficial effects of citrus flavonoids in preclinical models of atherosclerosis. Quercetin, naringin and naringenin, hesperidin and hesperetin, nobiletin, rutin, luteolin, apigenin, and kaempferol are the most common flavonoids in citrus fruits which could modulate adhesion molecules including ICAM-1, VCAM-1, E-selectin, and P-selectin. Additionally, markers of chronic inflammation such as interleukins, tumor necrosis factor-α, nuclear factor-κB, and nitric oxide signaling, as well as oxidative stress markers like superoxide dismutase and glutathione were all normalized upon administration of citrus flavonoids. Conclusively, this review confirms the modulatory role of flavonoids on adhesion molecules in atherosclerosis based on the preclinical evaluations. Thus, citrus fruits can be further studied in atherosclerotic patients regarding their activity in reducing adhesion molecules.

BACKGROUND: Recently, chronic lung diseases have been found to be associated with marked inflammation and oxidative stress, which leads to fibrosis in the lungs and chronic respiratory failure. This study aims to determine if hydrogen-rich water (HRW) can enhance oxygen saturation among patients with chronic lung diseases. METHODS: Ten patients with chronic lung diseases due to COPD (n = 7), bronchial asthma (n = 2), and tuberculosis of the lung (n = 1) with oxygen saturation of 90-95% were provided high-concentration (>5 mM) HRW using H2-producing tablets for 4 weeks. Oxygen saturation was measured via oximeter and blood pressure via digital automatic BP recorder. RESULTS: HRW administration was associated with a significant increase in oxygen saturation (SpO2) and decrease in TBARS, MDA, and diene conjugates, with an increase in vitamin E and nitrite levels, compared to baseline levels. Physical training carried out after HRW therapy appeared to increase exercise tolerance and decrease hypoxia, as well as delay the need for oxygen therapy. CONCLUSION: Treatment with HRW in patients with hypoxia from chronic lung diseases may decrease oxidative stress and improve oxygen saturation in some patients. HRW therapy may also provide increased exercise tolerance in patients with chronic hypoxia, but further research is needed.

RESUMEN

Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) display both peripheral tissue and brain insulin resistance, the later could be a potential risk factor for cognitive dysfunction. While certain degree of inflammation is required for inducing insulin resistance, underlying mechanism(s) remains unclear. Evidence from diverse research domains suggest that elevated intracellular fatty acids of de novo pathway can induce insulin resistance even without triggering inflammation; however, the effect of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) could be detrimental due the development of proinflammatory cues. In this context, evidence suggest that while lipid/fatty acid accumulation is a characteristic feature of brain pathology in AD, dysregulated de novo lipogenesis could be a potential source for lipid/fatty acid accumulation. Therefore, therapies aimed at regulating de novo lipogenesis could be effective in improving insulin sensitivity and cognitive function in patients with AD.

OBJECTIVE: To study the five mutations commonly prevalent in North India, i.e., IVS-I-5 (G→C), 619 bp deletion, IVS-I-1 (G→T), codon 41/42 (-TTCT), and codon 8/9 (+G), in the beta thalassemia (ß-thalassemia) major children. The specific ß-thalassemia mutations of different haplotype patterns of the ß-globin gene cluster will also be determined. METHODS: A total of 125 children diagnosed with ß-thalassemia major visiting the Department of Pediatrics of King George's Medical University were involved in the study. As per the QIAamp (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) manufacturer guidelines, genomic DNA was isolated from whole blood. To identify the haplotype pattern within the ß-globin gene cluster, the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis was used. The respective restriction endonucleases used were Hind III/GƔ, Hinc II/Ψß, Hinf I/ß, Ava II/ß, and BamHI for the haplotype analysis in the ß-globin pattern of descent of a set of linked alleles occurring on the same chromosome. RESULTS: Among the five common mutations, 73 patients had IVS-I-5 (G→C), 28 patients had 619 bp deletion, 17 patients had IVS-I-1 (G→T), five patients had Cd 41/42 (-TTCT), and two patients had Cd 8/9 (+G) mutations. Fifteen haplotypes (haplotypes 1-15) were identified in 125 ß-thalassemia major children. Among the five haplotypes observed in the IVS-I-5 (G→C) mutation, the H1 haplotype was most predominant with a frequency of 27.2%, followed by the H2, H4, H3, and H10 haplotypes in the given population. In 619 bp deletion, IVS-I-1 (G→T), codon 41/42, and codon 8/9, haplotype H9, H12, H11, and H5 were seen, respectively. CONCLUSION: ß-thalassemia was found to be the most common in the northern province of Uttar Pradesh. The linkage of ß-globin gene haplotypes with ß-thalassemia mutations was explored in the northern province of Uttar Pradesh. The population of different natives is being mixed up due to migration and industrialization. These were some reasons for the occurrence of haplotypic heterogeneity. This haplotype heterogeneity was correlated with the origin of these mutations found to be unlike the origin of common ones from different provinces.

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis of a circadian variation in circulating levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were measured at 4 h intervals of the day in 50 women with FMS satisfying American College of Rheumatology criteria for FMS (age 36.68 ± 9.89) as well as 50 healthy control women (age 32.82 ± 10.53). Serum TNF-α levels were substantially increased in patients with FMS but showed no circadian variation. In contrast, no difference in the levels of IL-6 was found. Moreover, there was also no circadian variation in both the groups of patients and controls. We conclude that no circadian pattern exists in the circulating levels of serum IL-6 and TNF-α in patients with FMS, although TNF-α levels are found raised in patients with FMS.

Purpose Vitamin D receptor (VDR) has been proposed as a possible marker for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The purpose of this study is to characterize the expression pattern of BsmI polymorphism (rs1544410) in the VDR gene in women with FMS and the genotype-phenotype association. Methods A total of 105 FMS patients and 105 controls were included in this study. VDR gene BsmI polymorphism was assessed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymerase (RFLP) method. Results There was no significant difference in the frequency distribution of both genotypes and alleles for VDR gene BsmI polymorphism between FMS patients and controls (p>0.05). The frequencies of BB, Bb, and bb in the VDR gene BsmI polymorphism were 19%, 43%, and 37% in patients, while in controls were 22.9%, 55.2%, and 21.9%. However, we did not find any significant association between the clinical symptoms of this disease and VDR BsmI genotypes among FMS patients (p>0.05). Conclusions The relationship between the VDR gene BsmI polymorphism and FMS could not be determined in this study. However, further studies with a larger sample size may be required to show a relation between the VDR gene BsmI polymorphism and FMS.

The Seven Countries Study showed that traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets are protective against cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The Japanese diet is considered the healthiest because it provides Japanese populations with the highest longevity and health. DASH and Mediterranean-style diets are also considered healthy diets, although the Indo-Mediterranean-style diet may provide better protective effects among patients with CVDs compared to other diets. The concept of the Indo-Mediterranean type of diet was developed after examining its role in the prevention of CVDs in India, the value of which was confirmed by a landmark study from France: the Lyon Heart Study. These workers found that consuming an alpha-linolenic acid-rich Mediterranean-style diet can cause a significant decline in CVDs and all-cause mortality. Later in 2018, the PREDIMED study from Spain also reported that a modified Mediterranean-style diet can cause a significant decline in CVDs, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cancer. The Indo-Mediterranean diet may be superior to DASH and Mediterranean diets because it contains millets, porridge, and beans, as well as spices such as turmeric, cumin, fenugreek, and coriander, which may have better anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects. These foods are rich sources of nutrients, flavonoids, calcium, and iron, as well as proteins, which are useful in the prevention of under- and overnutrition and related diseases. It is known that DASH and Mediterranean-style diets have a similar influence on CVDs. However, the Indo-Mediterranean-style diet may be as good as the Japanese diet due to improved food diversity and the high content of antioxidants.
