RESUMEN

Spatial transcriptomics technology has revolutionized our understanding of cell types and tissue organization, opening possibilities for researchers to explore transcript distributions at subcellular levels. However, existing methods have limitations in resolution, sensitivity, or speed. To overcome these challenges, we introduce SPRINTseq (Spatially Resolved and signal-diluted Next-generation Targeted sequencing), an innovative in situ sequencing strategy that combines hybrid block coding and molecular dilution strategies. Our method enables fast and sensitive high-resolution data acquisition, as demonstrated by recovering over 142 million transcripts using a 108-gene panel from 453,843 cells from four mouse brain coronal slices in less than 2 d. Using this advanced technology, we uncover the cellular and subcellular molecular architecture of Alzheimer's disease, providing additional information into abnormal cellular behaviors and their subcellular mRNA distribution. This improved spatial transcriptomics technology holds great promise for exploring complex biological processes and disease mechanisms.

Long-term visualization of the dynamic interactions between intracellular structures throughout the three-dimensional space of whole live cells is essential to better understand their functions, but this task remains challenging due to the limitations of existing three-dimensional fluorescence microscopy techniques, such as an insufficient axial resolution, low volumetric imaging rate and photobleaching. Here, we present the combination of a progressive deep-learning super-resolution strategy with a double-ring-modulated selective plane illumination microscopy design capable of visualizing the dynamics of intracellular structures in live cells for hours at an isotropic spatial resolution of roughly 100 nm in three dimensions at speeds up to roughly 17 Hz. Using this approach, we reveal the complex spatial relationships and interactions between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria throughout live cells, providing new insights into ER-mediated mitochondrial division. We also examined the motion of Drp1 oligomers involved in mitochondrial fission and revealed the dynamic interactions between Drp1 and mitochondria in three dimensions.

To understand neural basis of animal behavior, it is necessary to monitor neural activity and behavior in freely moving animal before building relationship between them. Here we use light sheet fluorescence microscope (LSFM) combined with microfluidic chip to simultaneously capture neural activity and body movement in small freely behaving Drosophila larva. We develop a transfer learning based method to simultaneously track the continuously changing body posture and activity of neurons that move together using a sub-region tracking network with a precise landmark estimation network for the inference of target landmark trajectory. Based on the tracking of each labelled neuron, the activity of the neuron indicated by fluorescent intensity is calculated. For each video, annotation of only 20 frames in a video is sufficient to yield human-level accuracy for all other frames. The validity of this method is further confirmed by reproducing the activity pattern of PMSIs (period-positive median segmental interneurons) and larval movement as previously reported. Using this method, we disclosed the correlation between larval movement and left-right asymmetry in activity of a group of unidentified neurons labelled by R52H01-Gal4 and further confirmed the roles of these neurons in bilateral balance of body contraction during larval crawling by genetic inhibition of these neurons. Our method provides a new tool for accurate extraction of neural activities and movement of freely behaving small-size transparent animals.

Light-field microscopy has emerged as a technique of choice for high-speed volumetric imaging of fast biological processes. However, artifacts, nonuniform resolution and a slow reconstruction speed have limited its full capabilities for in toto extraction of dynamic spatiotemporal patterns in samples. Here, we combined a view-channel-depth (VCD) neural network with light-field microscopy to mitigate these limitations, yielding artifact-free three-dimensional image sequences with uniform spatial resolution and high-video-rate reconstruction throughput. We imaged neuronal activities across moving Caenorhabditis elegans and blood flow in a beating zebrafish heart at single-cell resolution with volumetric imaging rates up to 200 Hz.

BACKGROUND: Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) is a pathway for the standardized imaging and reporting of bladder cancer staging using multiparametric (mp) MRI. PURPOSE: To investigate additional role of morphological (MOR) measurements to VI-RADS for the detection of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) with mpMRI. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 198 patients (72 MIBC and 126 NMIBC) underwent bladder mpMRI was included. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0 T/T2-weighted imaging with fast-spin-echo sequence, spin-echo-planar diffusion-weighted imaging and dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging with fast 3D gradient-echo sequence. ASSESSMENT: VI-RADS score and MOR measurement including tumor location, number, stalk, cauliflower-like surface, type of tumor growth, tumor-muscle contact margin (TCM), tumor-longitudinal length (TLL), and tumor cellularity index (TCI) were analyzed by three uroradiologists (3-year, 8-year, and 15-year experience of bladder MRI, respectively) who were blinded to histopathology. STATISTICAL TESTS: Significant MOR measurements associated with MIBC were tested by univariable and multivariable logistic regression (LR) analysis with odds ratio (OR). Area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) with DeLong's test and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to compared the performance of unadjusted vs. adjusted VI-RADS. A P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: TCM (OR 9.98; 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.77-20.8), TCI (OR 5.72; 95% CI 2.37-13.8), and TLL (OR 3.35; 95% CI 1.40-8.03) were independently associated with MIBC at multivariable LR analysis. VI-RADS adjusted by three MORs achieved significantly higher AUC (reader 1 0.908 vs. 0.798; reader 2 0.906 vs. 0.855; reader 3 0.907 vs. 0.831) and better clinical benefits than unadjusted VI-RADS at DCA. Specially in VI-RADS-defined equivocal lesions, MOR-based adjustment resulted in 55.5% (25/45), 70.4% (38/54), and 46.4% (26/56) improvement in accuracy for discriminating MIBC in three readers, respectively. DATA CONCLUSION: MOR measurements improved the performance of VI-RADS in detecting MIBC with mpMRI, especially for equivocal lesions. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have shown that disinfection byproducts (DBPs) induce coagulotoxicity, but human evidence is scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the relationships of DBP exposures with blood coagulation parameters. METHODS: Among 858 women from the Tongji Reproductive and Environmental (TREE) study, urinary dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) were detected as internal biomarkers of DBP exposures. We measured activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen (Fbg), international normalized ratio (INR), prothrombin time (PT), and thrombin time (TT) as blood coagulation parameters. Multivariable linear regression models were utilized to estimate the relationships between urinary DCAA and TCAA and blood coagulation parameters. The effect modifications by demographic and lifestyle characteristics were further explored. RESULTS: Elevated tertiles of urinary DCAA concentrations were associated with increased PT and INR (11.29%, 95% CI: 1.66%, 20.92% and 0.99%, 95% CI: 0.08%, 1.90% for the third vs. first tertile, respectively; both P for trends < 0.05). Stratification analysis showed that the positive associations were only observed among younger (< 30 years), leaner (body mass index < 24.0 kg/m2), and non-passive smoking women. Moreover, elevated tertiles of urinary TCAA concentrations in positive associations with PT and INR were observed among younger women (17.89%, 95% CI: 2.50%, 33.29% and 1.82%, 95% CI: 0.34%, 3.30% for the third vs. first tertile, respectively; both P for trends < 0.05) but not among older women (both P for interactions < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Higher levels of urinary DCAA and TCAA are associated with prolonged clotting time among women.

Cronobacter sakazakii is an important foodborne pathogen in powder infant formula (PIF). The objective of this study was to evaluate the inactivation effect of Rosa roxburghii Tratt pomace crude extract (RRPCE) on C. sakazakii isolated from PIF and to reveal the mechanism of action. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were used to evaluate the inhibitory activity of RRPCE against C. sakazakii. The inhibitory mechanism was revealed from the perspective of effects of RRPCE on intracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), reactive oxygen species (ROS), membrane potential, protein and nucleic acid leakage, and cell morphology of C. sakazakii. The inactivation effects of RRPCE on C. sakazakii in biofilms on stainless steel, tinplate, glass, silica gel, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene to evaluate its potential as a natural disinfectant. The results showed that the MIC and MBC of RRPCE against C. sakazakii were 7.5 and 15 mg/mL, respectively. After treatments with RRPCE, intracellular ATP content decreased significantly while intracellular ROS level increased significantly (p < 0.05). The cell membrane depolarization, large leakage of proteins and nucleic acids, and severely damaged cell morphology also occurred in C. sakazakii treated with RRPCE. In addition, a 20-minute treatment with 2 MIC (15 mg/mL) of RRPCE could inactivate all C. sakazakii (from 6.10 to 6.40 CFU/mL) in biofilms on all six contact surfaces. Our findings suggest that RRPCE is ideal for the inactivation of C. sakazakii and has the potential to be used as a natural disinfectant for the inactivation of PIF packaging materials and containers.

The purpose of this study was to reveal the antibacterial activity and mechanism of Polygonatum sibiricum extract (PSE) against Bacillus cereus and further analyze the application of PSE in pasteurized milk (PM). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values and growth curve analysis were used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of PSE against B. cereus. The changes in contents of intracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), activities of ß-galactosidase, adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), cell membrane potential, protein and nucleic acid leakage, and cell morphology were used to reveal the antibacterial mechanism. The effects of PSE on viable count and sensory evaluation of PM during storage were analyzed. The results showed that the MIC and MBC values of PSE against B. cereus were 2 and 4 mg/mL, respectively. Growth curve analysis showed that PSE with a concentration of 2 MIC could completely inhibit the growth of B. cereus. After treatments with PSE, the levels of intracellular ATP and ROS, and activities of ß-galactosidase, ATPase and AKP of B. cereus were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). Cell membrane was depolarized, amounts of protein and nucleic acid leakage were significantly increased (p < 0.05), and cell morphology was destroyed. Furthermore, PSE significantly reduced the viable count of B. cereus in PM and improved the sensory quality of PM during storage (p < 0.05). Together, our findings suggested that PSE had the desired effect as a natural preservative applied in PM.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the predictive ability of high-throughput MRI with deep survival networks for biochemical recurrence (BCR) of prostate cancer (PCa) after prostatectomy. METHODS: Clinical-MRI and histopathologic data of 579 (train/test, 463/116) PCa patients were retrospectively collected. The deep survival network (iBCR-Net) is based on stepwise processing operations, which first built an MRI radiomics signature (RadS) for BCR, and predicted the T3 stage and lymph node metastasis (LN+) of tumour using two predefined AI models. Subsequently, clinical, imaging and histopathological variables were integrated into iBCR-Net for BCR prediction. RESULTS: RadS, derived from 2554 MRI features, was identified as an independent predictor of BCR. Two predefined AI models achieved an accuracy of 82.6% and 78.4% in staging T3 and LN+. The iBCR-Net, when expressed as a presurgical model by integrating RadS, AI-diagnosed T3 stage and PSA, can match a state-of-the-art histopathological model (C-index, 0.81 to 0.83 vs 0.79 to 0.81, p > 0.05); and has maximally 5.16-fold, 12.8-fold, and 2.09-fold (p < 0.05) benefit to conventional D'Amico score, the Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment (CAPRA) score and the CAPRA Postsurgical score. CONCLUSIONS: AI-aided iBCR-Net using high-throughput MRI can predict PCa BCR accurately and thus may provide an alternative to the conventional method for PCa risk stratification.

BACKGROUND: Parabens, as suspected endocrine disruptors, are widely used in personal care products and pharmaceuticals. However, variability, predictors, and risk assessments of human exposure to parabens are not well characterized. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate within-day variability, predictors, and risk assessments of exposure to parabens among Chinese adult men. METHODS: We measured four parabens including methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP) in repeated urine samples from 850 Chinese adult men. We examined the variability by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and identified the predictors by multivariable linear mixed models. We assessed risks of paraben exposures based on the estimated daily intake (EDI). RESULTS: The four parabens were detected in >76% of urinary samples. We observed fair to good to high reproducibility (ICCs: 0.71 to 0.86) for urinary paraben concentrations within one day. Use of facial cleanser was associated with higher four urinary paraben concentrations. Increasing age, taking medicine, intravenous injection, and interior decoration in the workplace were related to higher urinary concentrations of specific parabens. Smoking and drinking were associated with lower urinary concentrations of specific parabens. The maximum EDIs for the four parabens ranged from 13.76 to 848.68 µg/kg bw/day, and 0.9% of participants had the hazard quotient values > 1 driven by PrP exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Urinary paraben concentrations were less variable within one day. Several lifestyle characteristics including use of facial cleanser and pharmaceuticals may contribute to paraben exposures.

The realization of the vast potential of digital PCR (dPCR) to provide extremely accurate and sensitive measurements in the clinical setting has thus far been hindered by challenges such as assay robustness and high costs. Here we introduce a lossless and contamination-free dPCR technology, termed CLEAR-dPCR, which addresses these challenges by completing the dPCR sample preparation, PCR, and readout all in one tube. Optical clearing of the droplet dPCR emulsion was combined with emerging light-sheet fluorescence microscopy, to acquire a three-dimensional (3D) image of a half million droplets sealed in a tube in seconds. CLEAR-dPCR provides ultrahigh-throughput readout results in situ and fundamentally eliminates the possibility of either sample loss or contamination. This approach exhibits improved accuracy over existing dPCR platforms and enables a greatly increased dynamic range to be comparable to that of real-time quantitative PCR.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common foodborne pathogen and spoilage bacterium in meat products. To develop a natural preservative for meat products, this study revealed the antibacterial activity and mechanism of Rosa roxburghii Tratt pomace crude extract (RRPCE) against S. aureus, and applied RRPCE to the preservation of cooked beef. The diameter of inhibition zone, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericide concentration of RRPCE against S. aureus were 15.85 ± 0.35 to 16.21 ± 0.29 mm, 1.5 mg/mL, and 3 mg/mL, respectively. The growth curve of S. aureus was completely stalled by treatment with RRPCE at 2 MIC. RRPCE results in the decrease of intracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) content, depolarization of cell membrane, leakage of cell fluid including nucleic acid and protein, and destruction of cell membrane integrity and cell morphology. During storage, RRPCE significantly reduced S. aureus viable counts, pH, and total volatile basic nitrogen of cooked beef compared with untreated samples (p < 0.05). In addition, RRPCE could significantly increase the redness (a*) value, decrease lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*) values, and slow down the color change of cooked beef (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that RRPCE can effectively inhibit S. aureus, and has the potential as a natural preservative for the preservation of cooked beef.

This paper proposes a novel multi-parameter estimation algorithm for the k-µ fading channel model to analyze wireless transmission performance in complex time-varying and non-line-of-sight communication scenarios involving moving targets. The proposed estimator offers a mathematically tractable theoretical framework for the application of the k-µ fading channel model in realistic scenarios. Specifically, the algorithm obtains expressions for the moment-generating function of the k-µ fading distribution and eliminates the gamma function using the even-order moment value comparison method. It then obtains two sets of solution models for the moment-generating function at different orders, which enable the estimation of the k and µ parameters using three sets of closed-form solutions. The k and µ parameters are estimated based on received channel data samples generated using the Monte Carlo method to restore the distribution envelope of the received signal. Simulation results show strong agreement between theoretical and estimated values for the closed-form estimated solutions. Additionally, the differences in complexity, accuracy exhibited under different parameter settings, and robustness under decreasing SNR may make the estimators suitable for different practical application scenarios.

Time-hopping pulse position modulation (TH-PPM) stands out as a secure communication due to the pseudo-random characteristics of its time-hopping sequence. However, the conventional TH-PPM transceiver encounters challenges in implementation, particularly in achieving the requisite high precision for synchronization. This paper introduces a novel non-coherent Q-ary TH-PPM transceiver, designed to surpass the Bit error rate (BER) performance of conventional TH-PPM transceivers in scenarios under non-ideal synchronization conditions, which also being straightforward to implement. Firstly, we provide an overview of the conventional TH-PPM transceiver. Secondly, the novel TH-PPM transceiver is introduced. In this context, a novel method for generating the TH-PPM signal is proposed for the transmitter, and a parallel matched-filter algorithm, adapted to the new TH-PPM signal, is presented for the receiver. Subsequently, the investigation delves into an in-depth analysis of BER performance, considering both ideal synchronization conditions and non-ideal synchronization conditions, for both the conventional and the new TH-PPM transceiver. Furthermore, the paper proposes a numerical simulation to validate the theoretical findings. The results demonstrate that the new TH-PPM transceiver outperforms the conventional counterpart by showing better BER performance in scenarios with non-ideal synchronization conditions.

Gaucher's disease is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease. Due to the decrease or lack of glucocerebrosidase (GBA) activity in lysosome caused by the mutation of GBA gene, its substrate glucocerebroside is detained in lysosome, resulting in clinical manifestations of liver, spleen, kidney, bone, hematopoietic system and even nervous system involvement. Here, we report a case of elderly patient presenting marked multiple bone destruction, with childhood medical history of splenectomy and "osteomyelitis". The patient has a significantly enlarged liver, accompanied by anemia, thrombocytopenia and osteopenia. Laboratory studies show this patient has low blood GBA activity and high glucosyl sphingosine level and increased chitotriosidase activity. Genetic testing revealed a homozygous missense variant NM_001005741.2 c.770A>G (p.Asp257Gly) in the patient's GBA gene. After 6 months of enzyme replacement therapy, the patient's platelets returned to normal, anemia improved, and liver volume decreased. Further detections show that the mother and brothers of the patient have heterozygous mutations at this locus, which is consistent with Mendelian inheritance law. Although this variant has not been reported in literatures or database, both clinical manifestations, characteristics of enzymology and biomarkers, and the effect of enzyme replacement therapy support the diagnosis of Gaucher's disease. The Asp257Gly variant is therefore assessed as a clinical pathogenic variant. This study expands the spectrum of the GBA gene variants. The diagnosis and treatment process of this case also provide reference for the early identification, diagnosis and early treatment of this kind of patients.

RESUMEN

Biomechanical forces intimately contribute to cardiac morphogenesis. However, volumetric imaging to investigate the cardiac mechanics with high temporal and spatial resolution remains an imaging challenge. We hereby integrated light-field microscopy (LFM) with light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM), coupled with a retrospective gating method, to simultaneously access myocardial contraction and intracardiac blood flow at 200 volumes per second. While LSFM allows for the reconstruction of the myocardial function, LFM enables instantaneous acquisition of the intracardiac blood cells traversing across the valves. We further adopted deformable image registration to quantify the ventricular wall displacement and particle tracking velocimetry to monitor intracardiac blood flow. The integration of LFM and LSFM enabled the time-dependent tracking of the individual blood cells and the differential rates of segmental wall displacement during a cardiac cycle. Taken together, we demonstrated a hybrid system, coupled with our image analysis pipeline, to simultaneously capture the myocardial wall motion with intracardiac blood flow during cardiac development.

BACKGROUND: Disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been shown to impair female reproductive function. However, epidemiological evidence on reproductive hormones is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between DBP exposures and reproductive hormones among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology. METHODS: We included 725 women from the Tongji Reproductive and Environmental (TREE) Study, an ongoing cohort conducted in Wuhan, China during December 2018 and January 2020. Urine samples collected at recruitment were quantified for dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) as biomarkers of DBP exposures. At day 2-5 of menstruation, serum reproductive hormones including luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), total testosterone (T), progesterone (PRGE), and prolactin (PRL) were determined. Multivariate linear regression models were performed to assess the associations of urinary DCAA and TCAA concentrations with reproductive hormone levels. Dose-response relationships were investigated using natural cubic spline (NCS) and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. RESULTS: After adjusting for relevant confounders, we observed that higher urinary DCAA levels were associated with increased serum PRGE (9.2%; 95% CI: -0.55%, 19.8% for the highest vs. lowest tertile; P for trend = 0.06). Based on NCS models, we observed U-shaped associations of urinary DCAA with serum PRGE and PRL; each ln-unit increment in urinary DCAA concentrations above 3.61 µg/L and 6.30 µg/L was associated with 18.9% (95% CI: 4.8%, 34.7%) and 23.3% (95% CI: -0.92%, 53.5%) increase in serum PRGE and PRL, respectively. The U-shaped associations were further confirmed in RCS models (P for overall association ≤0.01 and P for non-linear associations ≤0.04). We did not observe evidence of associations between urinary TCAA and reproductive hormones. CONCLUSION: Urinary DCAA but not TCAA was associated with altered serum PRGE and PRL levels among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Cronobacter sakazakii in goat milk-based infant formula (GIF) collected from Shaanxi Province, China, and reveal the molecular characterization and antibiotic resistance profile of these isolates. A total of 750 GIF samples were collected from the retail markets in 5 cities in Shaanxi Province from February 2019 to February 2021. Molecular characterization was investigated using multilocus sequence typing and O-antigen serotyping. Antibiotic resistance of C. sakazakii isolates was assessed using antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Thirty-two strains of C. sakazakii were isolated from GIF samples with a prevalence rate of 4.27% and were divided into 16 sequence types (STs); among them, ST4 (6/32, 18.75%) and ST21 (5/32, 15.63%) were dominant. Five C. sakazakii serotypes (O2, O1, O7, O4, and O3) were detected, and C. sakazakii serotype O2 (15/32, 46.88%) was the main. Of the 21 antimicrobials, isolates showed higher resistance against cephalothin (87.5%), amoxicillin (25%), azithromycin (18.75%), oxytetracycline (18.75%), ampicillin (12.5%), and streptomycin (12.5%). In addition, three isolates were found to be resistant to three antimicrobials. These findings revealed the potential epidemiological risk and characterization of C. sakazakii in GIF from Shaanxi Province, China, and provided reference data for the effective prevention and control of C. sakazakii in powdered infant formula.

The objective of this study was to clarify the antibacterial activity and mechanism of Chrysanthemum buds' crude extract (CBCE) against Salmonella Typhimurium, and explore the potential application in cooked chicken. The zone of inhibition (ZI), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were used to assess the in vitro antibacterial activity of CBCE against Salmonella Typhimurium. The antibacterial mechanism was elucidated by revealing the changes in intracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) concentration, membrane potential, content of biomacromolecule, and cell morphology. Furthermore, the effect of CBCE on the counts of Salmonella Typhimurium and color of cooked chicken during storage was studied. The results showed that the ZI, MIC, and MBC of CBCE against Salmonella Typhimurium were 12.9 ± 0.53-13.6 ± 0.14 mm, 40, and 80 mg/mL, respectively. In the process of inhibiting Salmonella Typhimurium by CBCE, the reduction of intracellular ATP concentration, cell membrane depolarization, leakage of protein and nucleic acid, and destruction of cell morphology were observed. Moreover, after treatments with CBCE, the growth of Salmonella Typhimurium in cooked chicken was significantly inhibited (p < 0.05) compared with the control group. No significant differences (p > 0.05) in lightness (L*), redness (a*), and yellowness (b*) values of cooked chicken were found between untreated and treated samples, as well as the color of cooked chicken treated with CBCE did not change significantly (p > 0.05) during the six days of storage. Overall, our findings suggested that CBCE exhibited the antibacterial effect against Salmonella Typhimurium, and had the potential to be used as a natural food preservative for the control of Salmonella Typhimurium in chicken products.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in a variety of coastal marine seafood from the Wentai fishing area, which is in proximity to highly urbanized areas and provides a significant portion of the marine aquatic products in Eastern China. Specifically, total PAHs ranged from 320 to 2500 ng/g d.w., whereas carcinogenic PAHs ranged from 21 to 92 ng/g d.w. According to the source diagnosis, the PAHs in the seafood were generally from sources highly related to fossil fuel. Thus, it is necessary to control the unintentional use of fossil fuels and optimize the energy structure in the terrestrial area nearby. Moreover, the food chain structure and the environmental behavior of PAHs through the food chain, which are relevant to dietary risk, were assessed. The δ15N values fell in a narrow range, which indicates a relatively short food chain, which is due to overfishing in this area. Furthermore, in this shortened food chain, the trophic magnification factors (TMFs) ranged from 0.23 to 6.6, which were generally higher than those in more complex food chains. The cancer risk (ILCR) ranged from 2.2 × 10-8 to 2.2 × 10-6. It is noted that the carcinogenic risk of consuming yellow croaker, which is one of the most popular seafood among people on the east coast of China, was the highest. In conclusion, trophic magnification implied a possible elevated risk through this marine food chain, and overfishing may have increased the uncertainty associated with TMF estimations.
