RESUMEN

Case 1: A 69-year-old male underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate hepatic hemangiomas that incidentally revealed a homogeneous hypervascular solid nodule (19 mm) in pancreatic tail. Differential diagnosis included neuroendocrine tumor (NET). Normal chromogranin A and CA19.9 levels. PET-68Ga-DOTANOC scan showed pancreatic tail enhancement consistent with NET. Suspicion of neoplasia persisted after two Endoscopic Ultrasounds with Fine-Needle Aspiration without neoplastic cells. Consequently, distal pancreatectomy was performed, revealing an accessory intrapancreatic spleen. Case 2: A 77-year-old female with dyspepsia performed an abdominal CT followed by MRI and both revealed a solid nodule (11.7 mm) in pancreatic tail with regular margins, suggestive of accessory spleen or pancreatic neoplasia. EUS confirmed a hypoechoic, homogeneous nodule consistent with accessory spleen (11.7mm). A scintigraphy using fragile erythrocytes (4) confirmed intrapancreatic accessory spleen, which requires no treatment.

Estimated ages at take-off (TO) and at peak height velocity (PHV) based on two models and maturity status based upon age at PHV and skeletal age (SA) were compared in a longitudinal sample of male soccer players. In addition, estimated ages at PHV in 13 longitudinal samples of soccer players were compared. The longitudinal height records of 58 players of European ancestry, measured annually on four or five occasions between 11 and 16 years, were modeled with Superimposition by Translation and Rotation (SITAR) and Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA) to estimate ages at TO and PHV. SAs were assessed with the Fels method. Ages at PHV in 13 longitudinal samples of soccer players (Europe 7, Japan 6) were evaluated with meta-analysis. Estimated ages at TO, 11.2 ± 0.8 (SITAR) and 11.0 ± 0.8 (FCPA) years, and at PHV, 13.6 ± 0.9 (SITAR) and 13.7 ± 0.0 (FCPA) years, were similar. An earlier age at PHV was associated with advanced skeletal maturity status (rho = -0.77 at ~14 years). Ages at PHV among European players indicated a north (later) - south (earlier) gradient, and were later than ages at PHV among Japanese players. In summary, ages at TO and PHV were similar with SITAR and FPCA, and ages at PHV were most strongly correlated with SA at ~14 years. Mean ages at PHV showed a north-south gradient among European samples, and were later compared to Japanese samples.

The analysis of the epidemiological data and the risk factors underlying injuries is crucial to promote prevention strategies in young soccer players. The objective of the present study was to perform a systematic literature review on the epidemiological data, described in the first part, and injury risk factors, presented in the second part. After electronic database searching, articles in line with the inclusion criteria were selected for the systematic review. Epidemiological data were extracted and discussed in this first part of the review. Data were grouped as follows: injury incidence, injury severity, and re-injury, injury types, injury mechanisms, and anatomical location. The principal findings of this first part of the review are as follows: (1) injury incidence is higher in older players and during matches than during training; (2) sex and maturity status may increase risk of injury; (3) male soccer players are more prone to muscle strains and ligament sprains while female players suffer more ligament sprains; (4) most injuries are located in the ankle and thigh in young male soccer players, and in the ankle and knee in female players; (5) severe injuries are less frequent but the incidence increases in older players. Re-injuries represent only a small percentage. Although soccer is considered a safe sport, many injuries are recorded in young soccer players every year. Injury predisposition changes in relation to age, sex, and biological age. Coaches and physical trainers should be aware of individual differences in order to promote prevention strategies and personalised training.

Injury is defined as a complex phenomenon determined by the non-linear interaction of several intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The objective of the present study was to perform a systematic literature review on the injury risk factors in young soccer players. After electronic database searching, articles in line with the inclusion criteria were selected for the systematic review. Injury risk factor data were extracted and grouped in intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors. The main findings of the current review are as follows: (1) alteration in neuromuscular control such as limb asymmetry and dynamic knee valgus are important intrinsic risk factors; (2) maturation status may impair neuromuscular control and increase the risk of injury; (3) fatigue and poor recovery contribute to the onset of overuse injuries; (4) the impact of anthropometric factors is still unclear; (5) previous injuries increase the risk of re-injuries; (6) highly skilled players are more exposed to risk of injuries; (7) high external workloads increase the risk of injuries; (8) playing position, as well as sport specialization, exposes young soccer players to greater injury risk. Many factors (e.g., neuromuscular control, training load, maturity status) can modify the susceptibility to injury in young soccer players. Being aware of the complex interaction between these factors is essential to identify players at higher risk of injury, develop adequate prevention strategies, and from a scientific point of view move from a reductionist to a complex system approach.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between sprint performance (time), and strength and power capabilities in football players. A total of 33 professional Portuguese football players performed isokinetic strength assessments, countermovement jumps (CMJ), squat jumps (SJ), and 10, 20 and 30 m sprints. Pearson's correlation (r) was used to determine the relationships between variables. Concentric knee extensor torque at 180° · s-1 was largely-to-very largely correlated with 10 m (r = -0.726), 20 m (-0.657) and 30 m sprints (r = -0.823). Moderate inverse correlation were observed between CMJ (r = -0.425 and r = -0.405) and SJ height (r = -0.417 and r = -0.430), and 20 m and 30 m sprint performance, respectively. Multiple linear regression combining KEcon 180° · s-1 and KFcon 180° · s-1 demonstrated that the model was significant for predicting 10 m sprint time (F (2, 8) = 5.886; R 2 = 0.595). The model combining SJ, CMJ and KEcon 180° · s-1 was also significant for predicting 20 and 30 m sprint times (F (3, 7) = 2.475; R 2 = 0.515 and F (3, 7) = 5.282; R 2 = 0.562; respectively). In conclusion, peak torque at higher velocities and vertical jump performance correlates significantly with linear sprint performance (time). For practitioners seeking to improve linear sprint performance in football players, evaluation of high speed strength and vertical jump indices should be undertaken.

OBJECTIVE: To propose a new decision algorithm combining biomarkers measured in a tumor biopsy with clinical variables, to predict recurrence after liver transplantation (LT). BACKGROUND: Liver cancer is one of the most frequent causes of cancer-related mortality. LT is the best treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients but the scarcity of organs makes patient selection a critical step. In addition, clinical criteria widely applied in patient eligibility decisions miss potentially curable patients while selecting patients that relapse after transplantation. METHODS: A literature systematic review singled out candidate biomarkers whose RNA levels were assessed by quantitative PCR in tumor tissue from 138 HCC patients submitted to LT (>5 years follow up, 32% beyond Milan criteria). The resulting 4 gene signature was combined with clinical variables to develop a decision algorithm using machine learning approaches. The method was named HepatoPredict. RESULTS: HepatoPredict identifies 99% disease-free patients (>5 year) from a retrospective cohort, including many outside clinical criteria (16%-24%), thus reducing the false negative rate. This increased sensitivity is accompanied by an increased positive predictive value (88.5%-94.4%) without any loss of long-term overall survival or recurrence rates for patients deemed eligible by HepatoPredict; those deemed ineligible display marked reduction of survival and increased recurrence in the short and long term. CONCLUSIONS: HepatoPredict outperforms conventional clinical-pathologic selection criteria (Milan, UCSF), providing superior prognostic information. Accurately identifying which patients most likely benefit from LT enables an objective stratification of waiting lists and information-based allocation of optimal versus suboptimal organs.

Pathogenic RIPK1 variants have been described as the cause of two different inborn errors of immunity. Biallelic loss-of-function variants cause the recessively inherited RIPK1 deficiency, while monoallelic variants impairing the caspase-8-mediated RIPK1 cleavage provoke a novel autoinflammatory disease (AID) called cleavage-resistant RIPK1-induced autoinflammatory (CRIA) syndrome. The aim of this study was to characterize the pathogenicity of two novel RIPK1 variants located at the cleavage site of caspase-8 detected in patients with dominantly-inherited, early-onset undefined AID. RIPK1 genotyping was performed by Sanger and next-generation sequencing. Clinical and analytical data were collected from medical charts, and in silico and in vitro assays were performed to evaluate the functional consequences. Genetic analyses identified two novel heterozygous RIPK1 variants at the caspase-8 cleavage site (p.Leu321Arg and p.Asp324Gly), which displayed a perfect intrafamilial phenotype-genotype segregation following a dominant inheritance pattern. Structural analyses suggested that these variants disrupt the normal RIPK1 structure, probably making it less accessible to and/or less cleavable by caspase-8. In vitro experiments confirmed that the p.Leu321Arg and p.Asp324Gly RIPK1 variants were resistant to caspase-8-mediated cleavage and induced a constitutive activation of necroptotic pathway in a similar manner that previously characterized RIPK1 variants causing CRIA syndrome. All these results strongly supported the pathogenicity of the two novel RIPK1 variants and the diagnosis of CRIA syndrome in all enrolled patients. Moreover, the evidences here collected expand the phenotypic and genetic diversity of this recently described AID, and provide interesting data about effectiveness of treatments that may benefit future patients.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to analyze the relationships between minutes of play (MP) and maturity status, fitness, and hormonal levels and to explain how those measures influence the time of play. METHODS: Twenty-six youth soccer players U15 participated in this study over a full-season period. Anthropometric measures, maturity status, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor and physical levels such as maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), fatigue index, countermovement jump (CMJ) performance were collected. At the end-season, players were assessed in 6 different tests over four days. RESULTS: VO2max largely correlated with GH (r = 0.57) and CMJ (r = 0.51). Also, GH largely correlated with CMJ (r = 0.55). MP had moderate correlations with VO2max (r = 0.44) and CMJ (r = 0.42). Multiple linear regression with maturation, physical fitness and hormonal levels explained R2 of 0.62 of the MP (F (8, 17) = 3.47, p = 0.015). Although each independent variable alone was not able to determine the playing time, when using the interactions, the model significantly explained the MP. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of maturity status, physical fitness, and hormonal levels seem to play a determinant role in explaining the match participation in youth soccer players.

A high training load could increase the risk of injury in soccer players. However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the effect on young athletes, in whom a different maturity status could lead to different physiological responses to training. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association of internal load markers and recovery status with risk of illnesses and non-contact injuries in young soccer players characterised by different maturity status. Twenty-three U14 soccer players were monitored during a full season and categorised according to years from peak height velocity (PHV). Based on the estimated values, athletes were divided into three different groups: Pre-PHV, Circa-PHV and Post-PHV players. The following internal load markers were monitored: rating of perceived exertion (RPE), session rating of perceived exertion (S-RPE), weekly load (WL), cumulative loads for 2, 3, and 4 weeks (WL2, WL3, WL4), acute to chronic workload ratio for 2, 3 and 4 weeks (A:C2, A:C3, A:C4) and week-to-week percentage variation (%WL). Recovery status was quantified using the total quality recovery (TQR) scale. Z-score transformation was adopted for TQR and RPE values and the difference between the parameters was calculated (Z-TQR-RPE). The Kruskal-Wallis test was adopted to evaluate differences in TQR and RPE with respect to maturity offset. A multinomial regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between internal load markers and risk of illness and non-contact injuries. The variables that showed a significant association were included in the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The results revealed that RPE was significantly higher (p < 0.01) and TQR significantly lower (p < 0.05) in Post-PHV compared to Pre- and Circa-PHV. Moreover, RPE, A:C4, TQR and Z-TQR-RPE showed a significant (p < 0.01) association with non-contact injuries. The internal load markers included in ROC curve analysis showed poor predictive ability (AUC ≤ 0.6). A rapid increase in training load together with a decrease in recovery status may produce higher susceptibility to illnesses and non-contact injuries. The contrasting physiological responses found in relation to maturity status could explain the different injury predisposition in young soccer players.

Background In patients with liver cancer, portal vein embolization (PVE) is recommended to promote liver growth before major hepatectomies. However, the optimal embolization strategy has not been established. Purpose To compare liver regeneration as seen at CT in participants with liver cancer, before major hepatectomies, with N-butyl-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) plus iodized oil versus standard polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles plus coils, for PVE. Materials and Methods In this single-center, prospective, randomized controlled trial (Best Future Liver Remnant, or BestFLR, trial; International Standard Randomized Controlled Trial Number 16062796), PVE with NBCA plus iodized oil was compared with standard PVE with PVA particles plus coils in participants with liver cancer. Participant recruitment started in November 2017 and ended in March 2020. Participants were randomly assigned to undergo PVE with PVA particles plus coils or PVE with NBCA plus iodized oil. The primary end point was liver growth assessed with CT 14 days and 28 days after PVE. Secondary outcomes included posthepatectomy liver failure, surgical complications, and length of intensive care treatment and hospital stay. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare continuous outcomes according to PVE material, whereas the Χ2 test or Fisher exact test was used for categoric variables. Results Sixty participants (mean age, 61 years ± 11 [standard deviation]; 32 men) were assigned to the PVA particles plus coils group (n = 30) or to the NBCA plus iodized oil group (n = 30). Interim analysis revealed faster and superior liver hypertrophy for the NBCA plus iodized oil group versus the PVA particles plus coils group 14 days and 28 days after PVE (absolute hypertrophy of 46% vs 30% [P < .001] and 57% vs 37% [P < .001], respectively). Liver growth for the proposed hepatectomy was achieved in 87% of participants (26 of 30) in the NBCA plus iodized oil group versus 53% of participants (16 of 30) in the PVA particles plus coils group (P = .008) 14 days after PVE. Liver failure occurred in 13% of participants (three of 24) in the NBCA plus iodized oil group and in 27% of participants (six of 22) in the PVA particles plus coils group (P = .27). Conclusion Portal vein embolization with N-butyl-cyanoacrylate plus iodized oil produced greater and faster liver growth as seen at CT in participants with liver cancer, compared with portal vein embolization with polyvinyl alcohol particles plus coils, allowing for earlier surgical intervention. © RSNA, 2021 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was twofold: (i) to analyze the relationships between fitness status (repeated-sprint ability (RSA), aerobic performance, vertical height jump, and hip adductor and abductor strength) and match running performance in adult women soccer players and (ii) to explain variations in standardized total distance, HSR, and sprinting distances based on players' fitness status. Materials and Methods: The study followed a cohort design. Twenty-two Portuguese women soccer players competing at the first-league level were monitored for 22 weeks. These players were tested three times during the cohort period. The measured parameters included isometric strength (hip adductor and abductor), vertical jump (squat and countermovement jump), linear sprint (10 and 30 m), change-of-direction (COD), repeated sprints (6 × 35 m), and intermittent endurance (Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1). Data were also collected for several match running performance indicators (total distance covered and distance at different speed zones, accelerations/decelerations, maximum sprinting speed, and number of sprints) in 10 matches during the cohort. Results: Maximal linear sprint bouts presented large to very large correlations with explosive match-play actions (accelerations, decelerations, and sprint occurrences; r = -0.80 to -0.61). In addition, jump modalities and COD ability significantly predicted, respectively, in-game high-intensity accelerations (r = 0.69 to 0.75; R2 = 25%) and decelerations (r = -0.78 to -0.50; R2 = 23-24%). Furthermore, COD had significant explanatory power related to match running performance variance regardless of whether the testing and match performance outcomes were computed a few or several days apart. Conclusion: The present investigation can help conditioning professionals working with senior women soccer players to prescribe effective fitness tests to improve their forecasts of locomotor performance.

The aims of this study were 1) to analyse session-to-session variations in different external load measures and 2) to examine differences in within-session intervals across different small-sided game (SSG) formats in professional players. Twenty professional soccer players (mean ± SD; age 28.1 ± 4.6 years, height 176.7 ± 4.9 cm, body mass 72.0 ± 7.8 kg, and body fat 10.3 ± 3.8%) participated in 3v3, 4v4, and 6v6 SSGs under different conditions (i.e., touch limitations and presence of goalkeepers vs. free touch and ball possession drill) over three sessions. Selected external load measures-including total distance (TD), high-intensity running (HIR, distance covered > 14.4 km.h-1), high-speed running (HSR, distance covered > 19.8 km.h-1), and mechanical work (MW, accelerations and deceleration > 2.2 m.s2)-were recorded using GPS technology during all SSG sessions. Small to large standardized typical errors were observed in session-to-session variations of selected measures across SSGs. TD.min-1 showed less variability, having a coefficient of variation (CV) of 2.2 to 4.6%, while all other selected external load measures had CV values ranging from 7.2% to 29.4%. Trivial differences were observed between intervals in TD.min-1 and HIR.min-1 for all SSGs, as well as in HSR.min-1 and MW.min-1 for most SSG formats. No reductions or incremental trends in session-to-session variations were observed when employing touch limitations or adding goalkeepers. The increased noise observed in higher speed zones (e.g., high-speed running) suggests a need for more controlled, running-based conditional drills if the aim is greater consistency in these measures.

The aim of this study was to analyse variations of internal load across small-sided games (SSG) in professional soccer. Twenty players (mean ± SD; age 28.1 ± 4.6 yo, height 176.7 ± 4.9 cm, weight 72.0 ± 7.8 kg) performed 3v3, 4v4, and 6v6 formats with/without goalkeeper and touch limitations. Each condition was repeated over three sessions and heart rate (HR) measures including average HR (HRavg), Edwards' training impulse (Edwards' TRIMP) and time in red zone (>80% of maximal HR) were recorded. All measures had trivial-to-moderate typical error (TE) and trivial differences were observed within intervals. The HRavg showed less coefficient of variations (0.9% to 1.7%) compared to Edwards'TRIMP.min-1 and red zone.min-1 (2% to 9.7%). A reduction trend in TE was observed when touching limitations or using goalkeepers. Practitioners can use different SSG formats but if the aim is to have less noise at higher intensities, more controlled drills are recommended.

The purpose of this research was to conduct a systematic review of published articles related to the effect of recreational football on non-communicable diseases. A systematic review of Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. Only empirical studies were included. There were no restrictions on the types of study design eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome measures result from the potential effects of recreational football on non-communicable diseases (eg, blood pressure, bone density, LDL cholesterol, and fat mass). A total of 44 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included. Recreational football is shown to: (a) decrease blood pressure and resting heart rate, improve cardiac structure and functioning, as well as increase maximal oxygen uptake in both sexes; (b) reduce cholesterol and triglycerides levels, increase insulin sensitivity, and have a positive impact on glycemic control; (c) improve bone mineralization, increase both bone mineral density and content, as well as acting as a stimulus for osteogenesis; and (d) be clearly beneficial for bone health, while slightly beneficial for body composition, muscle strength, and maximal oxygen uptake in adults with prostate cancer. The present systematic review demonstrated the benefits of recreational football practice on non-communicable diseases related to cardiovascular and bone health, body composition, type 2 diabetes, and prostate cancer. The effectiveness of recreational football on the aforementioned diseases may be related to age and gender; however, further research is required.

Optimizing athlete's performance is one of the most important and challenging aspects of coaching. Physiological and positional data, often acquired using wearable devices, have been useful to identify patterns, thus leading to a better understanding of the game and, consequently, providing the opportunity to improve the athletic performance. Even though there is a panoply of research in pattern recognition, there is a gap when it comes to non-controlled environments, as during sports training and competition. This research paper combines the use of physiological and positional data as sequential features of different artificial intelligence approaches for action recognition in a real match context, adopting futsal as its case study. The traditional artificial neural networks (ANN) is compared with a deep learning method, Long Short-Term Memory Network, and also with the Dynamic Bayesian Mixture Model, which is an ensemble classification method. The methods were used to process all data sequences, which allowed to determine, based on the balance between precision and recall, that Dynamic Bayesian Mixture Model presents a superior performance, with an F1 score of 80.54% against the 33.31% achieved by the Long Short-Term Memory Network and 14.74% achieved by ANN.

Adolescent characteristics of young adult soccer players (n = 35) were compared with those of youth teammates (n = 124) no longer involved in soccer. Former U-13 players active in soccer as young adults were slightly later in maturation and performed better in several functional and soccer skills than youth teammates. Former U-15 players active in soccer as young adults did not differ in maturity status from youth teammates but were chronologically older and performed better in agility and ball control. Young adult regional and national players in both age groups were rated significantly higher on the potential for success by their youth coaches, and national players were rated significantly higher than regional players. The results highlight the need for study of interactions among coaches, youth training and playing environments and the growth, maturity, functional, skill and behavioural characteristics of youth players, and how these interactions may influence persistence in soccer and later playing status.

PURPOSE: To compare characteristics of club level male soccer players 11 and 13 years of age, and to evaluate playing status in soccer two and 10 years after baseline by birth quarter (BQ). METHODS: Youth players 11 (n = 62, born 1992, observed December 2003) and 13 (n = 50, born 1990, observed April 2004) years were grouped by BQ. Baseline data included stature, weight, maturity status, functional capacities, soccer skills, goal orientation, and coach evaluation of potential. Playing status in soccer in 2006 and 2014 was also available. Baseline characteristics and subsequent playing status were compared by BQ. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics did not differ by BQ except for age and percentage of predicted adult height. Though not significant, coaches tended to rate players in BQ1as higher in potential. For those competing in soccer as adults, BQ2 (4), BQ3 (5) and BQ4 (2) were represented among players11 years, and BQ1 (3), BQ2 (2), BQ3 (1) and BQ4 (4) among players 13 years. CONCLUSION: Although limited to small numbers, differences among players by BQ were inconsistent. The results indicate a need to extend potential explanations of the RAE to include behavioral variables, coaches, training environment, and perhaps the culture of the sport.

Genetic and pharmacological manipulation of endocannabinoid (eCB) signaling has previously been shown to have an important role on the rewarding properties of drugs of abuse, including cocaine. Recently, fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) have been proposed as intracellular transporters of the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) as well as other bioactive lipids to their catabolic enzyme, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). The role of these transporters in modulating the brains reward system has yet to be investigated. This study examined the effects of genetic deletion of FABP 5/7 on cocaine preference, as assessed by the Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) paradigm. Male and female wild type (WT) and FABP 5/7 KO mice showed similar acquisition of cocaine CPP, with no differences found in overall locomotor activity. In addition, while male and female WT mice showed stress-induced CPP for cocaine, male and female FABP 5/7 KO mice failed to show a stress-induced preference for the cocaine-paired chamber. Additionally, serum corticosterone levels were analyzed to explore any potential differences in stress response that may be responsible for the lack of stress-induced preference for cocaine. Serum samples were obtained in animals under basal conditions as well as following a 30-min tube restraint stress. Male and female FABP 5/7 KO mice showed reduced corticosterone levels under stress compared to their WT counterparts. The reduction in corticosterone response under stress may mediate that lack of a stress-induced preference for cocaine in the FABP 5/7 KO mice. Thus, the role of FABPs may play an important role in drug-seeking behavior under stressful conditions.

Inhibition and genetic deletion of fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) 5 and 7 have been shown to increase the levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide as well as the related N-acylethanolamine's palmitoylethanolamide and oleoylethanolamide. This study examined the role of these FABPs on forced-swim (FS) behavior and on sucrose consumption in two experiments: (experiment 1) using wild-type (WT) mice treated with the FABP inhibitor SBFI26 or vehicle and (experiment 2) using WT and FABP5/7 deficient mice. Results from experiment 1 showed that acute treatment with SBFI26 did not have any effect on sucrose intake or FS behavior in mice. In experiment 2, male and female FABP5/7 deficient mice showed significant increases in sucrose consumption (25 and 21%, respectively) compared with their WT counterparts. In addition, immobility time during the FS was decreased by 27% in both male and female FABP5/7 knockout mice compared with their WT counterparts. The fact that such differences were seen between the acute pharmacological approach and the genetic approach (gene deletion) of FABP needs to be further investigated. The function of FABPs and their specific effects on endocannabinoid anandamide, oleoylethanolamide, and palmitoylethanolamide may play an important role in the development of reward and mood behaviors and could provide opportunities for potential therapeutic targets.

Atrophy of the alveolar ridge requires bone grafting at the implant site for rehabilitation of the masticatory function with dental implants. Despite the advances in the development of bone substitutes, autogenous bone graft remains the "criterion standard" because of its osteogenic, osteoinductive, osteoconductive potential, and non-immunogenic properties. However, harvesting of autogenous bone is not exempt from donor site morbidity. In this context, the use of autogenous bone derived from the proximal ulna might be a viable resource to obtain corticocancellous bone graft, as the harvesting from this donor site is associated with low morbidity. Thus, this article aimed to describe a case in which a maxillary sinus floor augmentation was performed by means of autogenous bone graft harvested from the proximal ulna, as the donor site. An appositional bone block graft harvested from the same region was used to augment the residual alveolar ridge. Clinically, healing proceeded uneventfully with no major complications. After 8 months, a proper amount of bone was found at the implant site, allowing a prosthetically driven implant insertion and subsequent implant-supported rehabilitation. Results were clinically and radiographically stable after a 3-year follow-up. The present case report suggested that proximal ulna as a donor site should be considered as a safe and reliable alternative for alveolar ridge augmentation. Besides the case presentation, a comprehensive review of the literature was also provided.
