RESUMEN

Three young Arabian sand gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa marica) were each infected with 20,000 sporulated oocysts of Eimeria rheemi collected from a naturally infected rheem gazelle. Both prepatent and patent periods were 7 days and the infected animals consistently passed large numbers of oocysts in their feces during patency. Infection with E. rheemi at this dose was associated with clinical coccidiosis in the form of 2 days of diarrhea before patency, continuing to day 15 postinoculation. The diarrhea stopped without treatment.

RESUMEN

Seventy-three nyalas (Tragelaphus angasii) in the Umfolozi, Mkuzi and Ndumu Game Reserves in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal were examined for arthropod parasites during 1983 and 1984. In addition, six animals were examined during 1994. Ten ixodid tick species, two louse species and a louse fly species were recovered. The nyalas were good hosts of all stages of development of Boophilus decoloratus, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Rhipicephalus muehlensi and the immature stages of Amblyomma hebraeum and Rhipicephalus maculatus. Adult male animals harboured more adult ticks, biting lice and louse flies than did adult females. B. decoloratus was generally most abundant from October to May. The larvae of R. appendiculatus peaked from April to October, nymphs from July to October and adults, on adult male nyalas, from February to May. Larvae of R. maculatus were most abundant from May to July and nymphs from June to October. The immature stages of A. hebraeum and all stages of R. muehlensi were present throughout the year.

RESUMEN

The helminths of the following red duikers, Cephalophus natalensis, were examined: 24 from 3 game reserves in Natal and 1 that had originated from Charters Creek, Natal, shortly before it died in the National Zoological Gardens, Pretoria. The 21 animals from Charters Creek harboured 16 nematode species, a nematode genus, 2 cestode species and paramphistomes. The 2 red duiker from Fanies Island harboured 4 nematode species, 3 nematode genera and 1 cestode species, while the single red duiker from Ndumu was infected with 3 nematode species. The antelope from the National Zoological Gardens, Pretoria, harboured 2 nematode species, 1 nematode genus and 1 cestode species. A race of Cooperia rotundispiculum was the most abundant nematode in duikers from all the reserves. Hyostrongylus rubidus is a new parasite record in South Africa and in red duikers, and was present in 80% of the antelope. Although primarily a parasite of swine, Hyostrongylus rubidus should be regarded as a definitive parasite of these antelope.

RESUMEN

The helminths of 77 nyala, Tragelaphus angasii, from 4 game reserves in Natal, were collected, counted and identified. Ten nematode species and 4 nematode genera, a trematode species and paramphistomes, and 2 cestode genera were recovered from the antelope. Of these, a Cooperia rotundispiculum race, Gaigeria pachyscelis, a Gongylonema sp., Haemonchus vegliai, Impalaia tuberculata, an Oesophagostomum sp., a Setaria sp., Trichostrongylus deflexus, Trichostrongylus falculatus, the larval stage of a Taenia sp., a Thysaniezia sp. and Schistosoma mattheei are new parasite records for this host. Individual nematode helminth burdens varied from 3 to 13 493 and the total mean nematode burden was 700. The mean burdens of nyala from Mkuzi were the largest and those from animals from the Umfolozi Game Reserve and the False Bay Park the smallest. Ostertagia harrisi was the most prevalent nematode, and it was also the most numerous in nyala from Umfolozi, Mkuzi and False Bay. A race of Cooperia rotundispiculum was the most numerous in nyala from Ndumu. No clear-cut trends in the seasonal abundance could be discerned for any of the worm species recovered in this study.

RESUMEN

Twenty-six common reedbuck, Redunca arundinum, were shot in pairs at monthly intervals for 13 consecutive months in the Himeville region of Natal. Ten nematode species, 2 cestodes and 1 trematode were recovered from these animals. Cooperia yoshidai was both the most numerous and most prevalent worm and peak burdens occurred during summer. Thirty-one reedbuck, killed at different intervals in various localities within the St. Lucia Reserve, harboured between 4 and 11 nematode species, 1 cestode and 1 trematode. With the exception of 4 reedbuck shot during January 1987, in which Haemonchus contortus was the most abundant worm, C. yoshidai was again both the most abundant and most prevalent worm. Peak burdens of this nematode occurred during autumn to spring. The helminths of 5 impala, Aepyceros melampus, also shot in the St. Lucia Reserve were examined. Some of the worm species of impala were also found in the reedbuck from the same locality and the helminths of the 2 antelope species are compared. An amended list, which includes several new records of the parasites of common reedbuck in South Africa is provided.

RESUMEN

Twenty-five common reedbuck, Redunca arundinum, from the Himeville region, 21 from the Eastern Shores Nature Reserve, 4 from the Charter's Creek Nature Reserve and 2 from the St Lucia Game Park, Natal were examined for arthropod parasites. The reedbuck from Himeville were infested with 4 ixodid tick species, those from the Eastern Shores with 7 species and those from Charter's Creek and St Lucia with 6 species. Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi was the only tick common to the 4 localities. The lice Damalinia reduncae and Linognathus fahrenholzi were present on the reedbuck from each locality. In addition 3 red duiker, Cephalophus natalensis, and 2 bushbuck, Tragelaphus scriptus, from the Charter's Creek Nature Reserve plus 2 impala, Aepyceros melampus, from the St Lucia Game Park were examined for ixodid ticks. The red duiker were infested with 3 tick species and the bushbuck and impala with 4 each.

RESUMEN

Fifty sera collected from 12 different species of free-living game animals in game parks in the Northern Natal were tested against 8 Leptospira interrogans antigens using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Six out of 50 animals had titres, all less than 100. Three of these animals had titres to serovar mini, 1 animal to tarrasovi, and 3 animals had multi-serovar reactions, 1 to mini and hardjo, and 1 to tarrasovi, copenhageni and pomona.

RESUMEN

The helminthis of 58 nyalas (Tragelaphus angasil) culled in the Mkuzi Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, during March 1991, and six culled during March 1994, were collected, identified and counted. Of these, an as yet undescribed Camelostrongylus sp., Cooperia hungl. an Onchocerca sp., Strongyloides papillosus and Moniezia benedeni are new parasite records. The individual nematode burdens of the antelope examined during March 1991 varied from one to 2327, and the total mean adult gastro-intestinal-nematode burden was 586. Those examined during March 1994 had burdens that varied from 322 to 1778, with a mean of 854. The two Camelostrongylus spp. were the most prevalent nematodes in the nyalas culled during 1991, while the trematode Cotylophoron jacksoni was most prevalent in those culled during 1994. The most numerous nematode in nyala calves during 1991 was a Cooperia rotundispiculum race, while the two Camelstrongylus 5pp. were most numerous in the adult and sub-adult nyalas from both surveys. No clear trends between rainfall and nematode burdens were evident, or was there any correlation between faecal nematode egg counts and nematode burdens. Contrary to what was observed in an earlier survey, female nyalas had larger nematode burdens than the males.

RESUMEN

An outbreak of tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis in a herd of Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) was managed by sanitary and medical measures. The sanitary measures included the isolation of infected animals, the monitoring of animals with a range of diagnostic tests and the hand-rearing of the progeny of the infected herd. All the infected oryx were treated with a mixture of isoniazid at 10 mg/kg bodyweight, ethambutol hydrochloride at 15 mg/kg bodyweight and rifampicin at 10 mg/kg bodyweight administered daily in the drinking water. These measures resulted in the cessation of mortalities, a decrease in the numbers of moderate and high risk animals and the production of tuberculosis-free animals for reintroduction into the wild.

RESUMEN

An outbreak of tuberculosis induced a mortality of 25 per cent in a captive herd of Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx). The diagnostic screening tests used on live animals included the comparative skin test, indirect and comparative ELISA tests and lymphocyte transformation tests. Difficulties in the interpretation of these tests stemmed principally from the facts that false negatives and false positives were encountered and that the threshold of positivity was difficult to establish with the ELISA test. The presence of other mycobacterial infections in the environment was almost certainly a complicating factor.

RESUMEN

Thirty protein-coding loci of southern African black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) from four isolated populations were studied using starch gel electrophoresis and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Gene diversity estimates varied between 0.036 and 0.058, with the Zambezi Valley population having the largest amount of protein variation. These levels are higher than those in other studies of genetic variation in black rhinoceros and are similar to the amount of genetic variation observed for outbred natural populations that are not genetically depauperate. Because the observed levels of genetic variation vastly exceed the expectations for current effective population sizes, the current levels apparently reflect large black rhinoceros populations which have existed until recently. Observed levels of genetic variation within populations are consistent with the expectations when recent demographic events are taken into account.
