RESUMEN

Gynandromorphic insects bear both male and female characteristics. In mosquitoes, gynandromorphy has been documented in multiple species and it can include many different combinations of sex-specific traits such as plumose or filiform antennae, short or elongated palpi, and male or female terminalia. Here we report 4 gynandromorphic specimens of Culex erythrothorax, Cx. pipiens complex, Cx. tarsalis, and Culiseta incidens collected in the Northern San Joaquin Valley of California. Each of the specimens exhibited heads with female characteristics of short palpi and filiform antennae while displaying fully developed external male terminalia including basistyles and dististyles. The potential implication of gynandromorphism in genetic control of mosquito vectors is discussed.

The presence of cocaine on US paper currency has been known for a long time. Banknotes become contaminated during the exchange, storage, and abuse of cocaine. The analysis of cocaine on various denominations of US banknotes in the general circulation can provide law enforcement circles and forensic epidemiologists objective and timely information on epidemiology of illicit drug use and on how to differentiate money contaminated in the general circulation from banknotes used in drug transaction. A simple, nondestructive, and accurate capillary gas chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of cocaine on various denominations of US banknotes in this study. The method comprises a fast ultrasonic extraction using water as a solvent followed by a SPE cleanup process with a C(18) cartridge and capillary GC separation, identification, and quantification. This nondestructive analytical method has been successfully applied to determine the cocaine contamination in US paper currency of all denominations. Standard calibration curve was linear over the concentration range from the LOQ (2.00 ng/mL) to 100 microg/mL and the RSD less than 2.0%. Cocaine was detected in 67% of the circulated banknotes collected in Southeastern Massachusetts in amounts ranging from approximately 2 ng to 49.4 microg per note. On average, $5, 10, 20, and 50 denominations contain higher amounts of cocaine than $1 and 100 denominations of US banknotes.

Wetland restorations benefit wildlife, but wetland vegetation may promote mosquitoes. We studied the effects of removing joint grass (Paspalum distichum L.) on the abundance and distribution of immature mosquitoes in seasonal freshwater wetlands in California. In 4 >4-ha plots and one 29.8-ha field, joint grass was removed via herbicide and disking. Four untreated plots and one 4.1-ha field were controls. Fields were sampled every 7-14 days in early autumn by taking 75 dips along levees, plus a 25-dip circular transect 6 m from field edges. Untreated plots had 7 times more larvae and 20 times more pupae than did vegetation-removal plots. Similar densities of mosquitoes were found along edges and within fields.

Overall the 1976 Festival of American Folklife was a highly successful affair both from a cultural and environmental health standpoint. Although a number of health-related problems arose on a day-to-day basis, close surveillance and prompt action on the part of the onsite sanitarian made it possible to secure early resolution of them with no ill effects among either visitors or the Festival staff. Logistically, planning and conducting of the comprehensive Smithsonian Institute (SI) food operations involving 50 different ethnic groups was an accomplishment worthy of note. Even more important, however, was the fact that during the entire time the Government Services, Inc. and SI food service operations were in progress, there was not a single case of foodborne illness associated with foods and beverages served to an estimated 500,000 persons onsite. This was in large measure due to the excellent cooperative assistance furnished by health agency personnel in the District of Columbia and the surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia. These personnel inspected the many food establishments within their jurisdictions which served as sources for foods served at the Festival. All individuals and groups assisting directly or indirectly with this aspect of the Festival may justly be proud of the achievement.
