RESUMEN

The must frequently observed mandibular condyle tumors are benign in nature, followed by metastases; primary malignant tumors are very rarely encountered, following a review of the clinical and radiographic characteristics of all types of tumors that occur, three cases of condylar metastases are described. Treatment of primary tumors is exclusively surgical, that of secondary lesions being palliative because of the often poor prognosis related to the primary tumor.

RESUMEN

This paper relates a case of Burkitt lymphoma, whose initial presentation was a deep-bite malformation, that accentuated within a month. Orthodontic consultation referred this 8 years old boy to hospital, where diagnosis was ascertained. The authors discuss radiographs that have been taken before and during the installation of the clinical symptomatology. They point out the main radiographic signs encountered with maxilla involvement in Burkitt lymphoma.

RESUMEN

Reconstruction of near the totality of the lower lip after oncological resection or traumatic amputation, is a very challenging problem. The "step technique", introduced by Johanson, allows a good repair of the amputated lip, regarding amplitude, colour and function. The design of the flaps is recalled; and the authors present two cases which demonstrate the good result obtained with this simple but reliable method.

RESUMEN

The authors report the case of a 65 years old man, who suffered from an osteitis, involving the mandible. Within a few months, and despite of a well established treatment, sequestration occurred following a pathologic fracture. No specific germ was encountered after several laboratory examinations. The discovery of a primary syphilis forty years ago, confrontation of clinic and paraclinic data, suggested the actual osteitis could be a complication of tertiary syphilis. A specific treatment was started, and the situation improved progressively. After five months of treatment, mandibular reconstruction was decided. Diagnostic arguments are discussed, and the case is compared with those, not numerous, reported in the literature.

RESUMEN

Among the numerous musculo-cutaneous flaps, the lower trapezius island appears an interesting procedure for punctual indications. The authors report their experience in utilisation of this flap for reconstruction of defects in auricular area, and in the buccal cavity. They point out some practical problems encountered when raising the flap.

RESUMEN

DNA-DNA hybridization was used to determine the levels of genomic relatedness of the three species of "false neisseriae," Neisseria caviae, Neisseria cuniculi, and Neisseria ovis. The reference strains of these species exhibited high levels of intraspecies relatedness (93 to 100% for N. caviae, 79 to 100% for N. cuniculi, and 68 to 100% for N. ovis) but low levels of interspecific relatedness (less than 34%) to each other and to various species belonging to the beta subclass of the Proteobacteria (Kingella kingae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Oligella urethralis) or to the gamma subclass (Branhamella catarrhalis, Kingella indologenes, Moraxella atlantae, Moraxella bovis, Moraxella lacunata subsp. lacunata, Moraxella lacunata subsp. liquefaciens, Moraxella nonliquefaciens, Moraxella osloensis, and Moraxella phenylpyruvica). However, the levels of DNA-DNA hybridization for the three species of "false neisseriae" were significantly higher with the species belonging to the gamma subclass (average, 13.7%) than with the species belonging to the beta subclass (average, 4.5%). These data suggest that N. caviae, N. cuniculi, and N. ovis are three separate genomic species in the gamma subclass. An ascendant hierarchical classification based only on fatty acid profiles distinguished four main classes containing (i) most of the "classical moraxellae," the "false neisseriae," and B. catarrhalis, (ii) only Acinetobacter spp., (iii) M. nonliquefaciens and "misnamed moraxellae" (M. atlantae, M. osloensis, and M. phenylpyruvica), and (iv) the "true neisseriae," the three Kingella species, and O. urethralis. Fatty acids that distinguish these four classes were identified. The fatty acid profiles of the two strains of Psychrobacter immobilis which we studied are not very similar to the profiles of the other taxa. Our results support the hypothesis that the three species of "false neisseriae," B. catarrhalis, the "classical moraxellae," and Acinetobacter spp. should be included in the same family.

RESUMEN

We report the analysis of the distribution of the C677T mutation on the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene in prenatally diagnosed neural tube defects (NTD) cases and controls. In contrast to previous reports, we found the same distribution in fetuses with NTD and controls, which suggests that the MTHFR C677T mutation cannot be regarded as a genetic risk factor for NTD.

Methods: A prospective, monocentric and controlled study was carried out including the first 285 patients seen in Phlebology consulting room presenting with truncus and microvarix underwent sclerosis of their lesions usisng Polidocanol in a foam way without ultrasound guide. We assessed a group of demographic variables and also we quantify effectiveness, number and type of complications as wll as the satisfaction of patient after 30 days of treatment. Results: We achieved a 82 percent efectiveness with a single session of treatment, which increased to 94 percent with two sessions. Main complications included pain (33,6 percent) and mapping (12,9 percent), and 90 percent of patients were satisfied with treatment. Conclusions: Sclerosis in a foam way of venous trunks and microvarix was effective, safe and achieves a high level of satisfaction in patients.
