RESUMEN

Severe butanol toxicity to the metabolism of solventogenic clostridia significantly impede the application of fermentative butanol as a biofuel. Liquid-liquid extraction is an efficient method to reduce the butanol toxicity by in-situ removing it in the extractant phase. Butanol mass transfer into extractant phase in static acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) extractive fermentation with biodiesel as the extractant could be enhanced by adding a tiny amount of surfactant such as tween-80. In the case of corn-based ABE extractive fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 using biodiesel originated from waste cooking oil as extractant, addition of 0.14% (w/v) tween-80 could increase butanol production in biodiesel and total solvents production by 21% and 17%, respectively, compared to those of control under non-surfactant existence. Furthermore, a mathematical model was developed to elucidate the mechanism of enhanced ABE extractive fermentation performance. The results indicated that the mass transfer improvement was obtained by effectively altering the physical properties of the self-generated bubbles during ABE extractive fermentation, such as reducing bubble size and extending its retention time in extractant phase, etc. Overall, this study provided an efficient approach for enhancing biobutanol production by integration of bioprocess optimization and model interpretation.

In space gravitational wave detection missions, a drag-free system is used to keep the test mass (TM) free-falling in an ultralow-noise environment. Ground verification experiments should be carried out to clarify the shielding and compensating capabilities of the system for multiple stray force noises. A hybrid apparatus was designed and analyzed based on the traditional torsion pendulum, and a technique for enhancing the sensitivity of the torsion pendulum system by employing the differential wavefront sensing (DWS) optical readout was proposed. The readout resolution experiment was then carried out on an optical bench that was designed and established. The results indicate that the angular resolution of the DWS signal in optical readout mode can reach the level of 10 nrad/Hz1/2 over the full measurement band. Compared with the autocollimator, the sensitivity of the torsional pendulum is noticeably improved, and the background noise is expected to reach 4.5 × 10-15 Nm/Hz1/2@10 mHz. This method could also be applied to future upgrades of similar systems.

A kind of full-function two-sided optical bench interferometer (OBI) is designed to meet the practical requirements of the Taiji Program for space gravitational wave detection. The main optical paths are arranged on the A-side for transmission and interference, and other optical paths and electronic devices are placed on the B-side. According to the design scheme, we successfully constructed two OBIs by using hydrogen-oxygen catalytic stress-free bonding technology. When the OBI is installed and adjusted, the position and Angle error of the interference beam are controlled within 30 µm and 50 µrad through the self-designed precision mechanical clamping mechanism and beam position measuring device. The built OBI was placed on the vibration isolation platform in the vacuum tank for the stability test. The test results show that the noise of the OBI is less than 10 pm/√Hz in the frequency band of 0.1 Hz to 1 Hz, which meets the noise budget requirements of the Taiji Pathfinder in the middle- and high-frequency band.

Laser interferometer with picometer precision is a key technology in the space gravitational wave detection. Many interferometry strategies have been put forward for the multiple purposes in the past 10 yr. We propose a new interferometry method, called constant amplitude modulation (CAM) heterodyne interferometry. Differently, the CAM provides an optical pilot tone (OPT) for the noise correction theme. Compared with the analog pilot tone, the OPT can record and correct more noises, such as the analog to digital converter sampling jitter, the photodetector noise and the analog front-end noise. From the discussion, the modulated depth ϕmodulate=1.375 rad and the power ratio of the beam split n=0.432 are the best choice for the CAM-modulated parameter. Moreover, a simulated case has been implemented for the verification of the CAM strategy. Therefore, the CAM gives us another excellent choice in the optical design of the interferometer.

We introduce a 405 nm external-cavity semiconductor laser using a volume Bragg grating (VBG) as the feedback element. By decreasing the length of the external cavity and reducing the wavelength difference between the output wavelength of the laser diode during free running and Bragg wavelength of the VBG, the emission wavelength of the semiconductor laser is stably locked at 405.1 nm with a spectral linewidth of 0.08 nm. The output power reaches 292 mW, and the wavelength drift with temperature reduces to 0.0006 nm/°C. These results are helping for the spectroscopy applications of a blue-violet laser diode. In contrast to traditional external-cavity semiconductor lasers, this laser is less expensive and more compact, in addition to having a narrow linewidth and good wavelength stability. These advantages would facilitate the development of associated areas of research, including optical data storage, laser display, and laser medicine.

The laser acquisition-pointing technique is one of the most important techniques for space gravitational wave detection missions, like the Taiji program and the LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) program. The laser acquisition system suppresses the laser deviation angle to 1 µrad at the receiving aperture. Corresponding to 80 times of telescope magnification, the acquisition accuracy should reach 80 µrad at the acquisition camera. In order to verify the feasibility of the laser acquisition scheme, a laser acquisition ground simulation experimental system is designed and constructed. The experimental system simulates the actual acquisition process of the Taiji from three aspects: optical path, acquisition accuracy and acquisition scanning process. In the experiment, the coupling between the laser acquisition system and the laser pointing system is considered by introducing the DWS (Differential Wave-front Sensing) technique to calibrate the reference position of the acquisition camera and read out the acquisition precision. Due to limited beam propagation distance in the ground experiment, the in-flat top properties of the transmitting beam will greatly affect the acquisition precision. Based on the analysis of the influence, an improved acquisition ground simulation scheme is introduced. The experimental results indicate that the experimental system can achieve the acquisition accuracy of sub-10 µrad magnitude at the acquisition camera. The experimental system realizes methodological demonstration of the acquisition scheme. The results offer the experimental foundation and theoretical basis for the acquisition system of the Taiji/LISA program.

Most of the space gravitational wave detection missions, such as the Taiji program, use space-based laser interferometer to sense the gravitational waves. However, to obtain the interference signal, the inter-satellite laser acquisition scheme is firstly required to establish the laser link. Traditional acquisition sensors are CCD cameras, which cause a serious heating problem and call for high alignment precision. To avoid these questions, a high-speed, high-precision, fully automatic acquisition scheme with quadrant photodetectors (QPD) is proposed in this paper. Incoherent measurement method of the QPD is introduced to fulfill high-speed acquisition, while a dedicated imaging system is involved for automatic acquisition. Also, an improved differential power sensing (DPS) signal is developed. Combined with the down-sampling algorithm and the match filter algorithm, the acquisition scheme can achieve 1 µrad resolution with total scanning time less than 220 s.

BACKGROUND: Group A rotavirus (RVA), despite being a leading cause of gastroenteritis in infants and young children, is less studied in Shanxi Province, China. The current study was conducted to determine the prevalence and genetic characterization of RVA in hospitalized children younger than 10 years of age with the diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis in Shanxi Province, China. METHODS: A hospital-based active surveillance of rotavirus gastroenteritis was conducted at Children's Hospital of Shanxi from Jan 1, 2015, through Dec 31, 2019. Rotavirus was detected in stool samples by real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). G- and P-genotypes were determined by reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and nucleotide sequencing. RESULTS: A total of 961 children younger than 10 years of age was enrolled over the study period, of whom 183 (19.0%) were positive for RVA. The highest RVA-infection frequency (23.7%) was found among children aged 12-23 months, and the seasonal peak was in December. G9P[8] was most prevalent (76.0%), followed by G3P[8] (7.1%), G2P[4] (3.3%), G1P[8] (0.5%) and G9P[4] (0.5%). CONCLUSIONS: These results report for the first time that RVA was one of the main causes of severe infectious gastroenteritis in children, and a high proportion of G9P[8] strains circulating in most areas of Shanxi Province. While the protective efficacy of the rotavirus vaccines has been demonstrated against G9P[8] strains, our results highlight that the dominant strains have not been effectively controlled in China.

RESUMEN

Space-based gravitational wave detection programs, like the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna or the Taiji program, aim to detect gravitational waves in space with interferometric arms of millions of kilometers. In the process of far-field propagation, the exit wavefront error of the transmitting telescope will couple with the unavoidable pointing between two spacecraft to generate an optical path noise. In this paper, we firstly build a comprehensive theoretical model concerning the effect of 3rd ∼7th aberrations on this coupling and compare the coupling coefficients of different aberrations. Then, we use this model to analyze the far-field optical path noise of the exit wavefront of a built prototype telescope for the Taiji program. Finally, we take advantage of the Monte Carlo algorithm of the model for investigating the effect of the different wavefront qualities on optical path noise. The results can provide meaningful guidance for the construction of the subsequent telescope.

In the acquisition stage of many space applications, such as the Taiji program, the spot center of weak laser light must be accurately determined. Under weak light conditions, the precision of most traditional positioning methods is greatly affected. In this paper, we present a high-precision laser spot center positioning method based on the theoretical analysis of influence factors of precision. It is shown through experimental study that the method's precision can fulfill the requirement of the Taiji program.

The HIV-1 pandemic, spanning four decades, presents a significant challenge to global public health. This study aimed to understand the molecular transmission characteristics of newly reported HIV infections in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China, to analyze the characteristics of subtypes and the risk factors of the transmission network, providing a scientific basis for precise prevention and intervention measures. A total of 720 samples were collected from newly diagnosed HIV-1 patients residing in Taiyuan between 2021 and 2023. Sequencing of partial genes of the HIV-1 pol gene resulted in multiple sequence acquisitions and was conducted to analyze their subtypes and molecular transmission networks. Out of the samples, 584 pol sequences were obtained, revealing 17 HIV-1 subtypes, with CRF07_BC (48.29%), CRF01_AE (31.34%), and CRF79_0107 (7.19%) being the dominant subtypes. Using a genetic distance threshold of 1.5%, 49 molecular transmission clusters were generated from the 313 pol gene sequences. Univariate analysis showed significant differences in the HIV transmission molecular network in terms of HIV subtype and household registration (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that CRF79_0107 subtype and its migrants were associated with higher proportions of sequences in the HIV transmission network. These findings provide a scientific foundation for the development of localized HIV-specific intervention strategies.

To determine the epidemiological status of influenza and understand the distribution of common respiratory viruses in adult patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) cases in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China, epidemiological data between 2018 and 2019 were retrieved from the China Influenza Surveillance Information System, and two sentinel ILI surveillance hospitals were selected for sample collection. All specimens were screened for influenza virus (IFV) and the other 14 common respiratory viruses using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results of the 2-year ILI surveillance showed that 26,205 (1.37%) of the 1,907,869 outpatients and emergency patients presented with ILI, with an average annual incidence of 297.75 per 100,000 individuals, and ILI cases were predominant in children <15 years (21,348 patients, 81.47%). Of the 2713 specimens collected from adult patients with ILI, the overall detection rate of respiratory viruses was 20.13%, with IFV being the most frequently detected (11.79%) and at a relatively lower rate than other respiratory viruses. Further subtype analysis indicated an alternating or mixed prevalence of H1N1 (2009), H3N2, Victoria, and Yamagata subtypes. This study provides a baseline epidemiological characterization of ILI and highlights the need for a nationwide detection and surveillance system for multiple respiratory pathogens.

In recent years, the prevalence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by enteroviruses other than enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) has gradually increased. The throat swab specimens of 2701 HFMD cases were tested, the VP1 regions of CVA10 RNA were amplified using RT-PCR, and phylogenetic analysis of CVA10 was performed. Children aged 1-5 years accounted for the majority (81.65%) and boys were more than girls. The positivity rates of EV-A71, CVA16, and other EVs were 15.22% (219/1439), 28.77% (414/1439), and 56.01% (806/1439), respectively. CVA10 is one of the important viruses of other EVs. A total of 52 CVA10 strains were used for phylogenetic analysis based on the VP1 region, 31 were from this study, and 21 were downloaded from GenBank. All CVA10 sequences could be assigned to seven genotypes (A, B, C, D, E, F, and G), and genotype C was further divided into C1 and C2 subtypes, only one belonged to subtype C1 and the remaining 30 belonged to C2 in this study. This study emphasized the importance of strengthening the surveillance of HFMD to understand the mechanisms of pathogen variation and evolution, and to provide a scientific basis for HFMD prevention, control, and vaccine development.

Novel solanesylpiperazinotriamines as well as their N-aryl-substituted analogs were synthesized starting from solanesol through a multistep procedure. Their structures were confirmed by IR, (1)H NMR, MS, and elemental analysis. The preliminary results indicated that these novel derivatives were preferentially toxic against tumor cells, and at non-cytotoxic concentration, the synergistic effect of solanesyltriamines (3a and 3c) was even superior to that of N,N'-bis(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-N-solanesylethylenediamine. Interestingly, the cytotoxicity of solanesylpiperazinotriamine derivatives was markedly enhanced when conjugating with aryl pharmacophores (7-9).

Investigation on designed polyaminoanthraquinones revealed that the anthraquinones bearing triamine motifs are generally more potent than their counterparts with diamine or tetramine motifs. Compared with the reference drug mitoxantrone (MTX), 9b and 9c exhibited better inhibitory activity on cancerous HepG2 cells and preferable cell selectivity in the further screen of normal QSG7701 cells, although they were not assimilated by cancer cells via the polyamine transporter. The presence of polyamine motifs elevated the interaction of compounds 9b and 9c with lysosomes and resulted in distinct mode of cell death. 9c and MTX could cause caspases-dependent HepG2 cell apoptotic death involving in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) loss, cytochrome c release, and caspase-3 activation. However, 9b, which contained only one less methylene group in the polyamine tail, produced cytotoxicity by necrosis. In conclusion, the modification of anthraquinones with polyamines may furnish potent anticancer drug candidates against hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing distinct cell death mechanisms.
