BACKGROUND: Rosmarinic acid (RA) is an active polyphenol that is widely found in various edible herbs. This study explored the potential anti-allergic activities and the underlying mechanisms of RA in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced intestinal allergic mice. RESULTS: Forty female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into five groups: control group, model group (OVA sensitized/challenged), RA-Low group (OVA sensitized/challenged, 30 mg kg-1 RA intervention), RA-Middle group (OVA sensitized/challenged, 90 mg kg-1 RA intervention) and RA-High group (OVA sensitized/challenged, 270 mg kg-1 RA intervention). RA effectively attenuated allergic reactions, including alleviating allergic symptoms and regulating the hypothermia of mice in the model group. Moreover, the anaphylactic mediator (OVA-specific IgE, histamine and mMCP-1) levels of OVA allergic mice were markedly decreased after RA intervention. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that RA significantly inhibited Th2 cytokine expression, while Th1 and Treg cytokines were markedly increased. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that RA effectively regulated the richness and diversity of the intestinal microbiota in OVA allergic mice. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio were altered by RA intervention. At the genus level, RA was found to regulate the disturbances in the relative abundance of Muribaculaceae, Lactobacillus and Prevotella. CONCLUSION: RA exhibited potential anti-allergic activity in OVA allergic mice by regulating hypersensitive immune responses and the intestinal microbiota structure. These results provide important evidence that RA can be developed into a novel functional food-derived ingredient against food allergy. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Cadmium (Cd) is widely distributed in the environment and easy adsorbed by living organisms with adverse effects. Exposure to Cd-contaminated food may disrupt lipid metabolism and increase human health risk. To study the perturbation effect of Cd on lipid metabolism in vivo, 24 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly assigned four groups and treated by Cd chloride solution (0, 1.375 mg/kg, 5.5 mg/kg, 22 mg/kg) for 14 days. The characteristic indexes of serum lipid metabolism were analyzed. Afterwards, untargeted metabolomics analysis was applied to explore the adverse effects of Cd on rats by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results revealed that Cd exposure obviously decreased the average serum of triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and caused an imbalance of endogenous compounds in the 22 mg/kg Cd-exposed group. Compared with the control group, 30 metabolites with significant differences were identified in the serum. Our results indicated that Cd caused lipid metabolic disorders in rats by disrupting linoleic acid and glycerophospholipid metabolism pathways. Furthermore, there were three kinds of remarkable differential metabolites-9Z,12Z-octadecadienoic acid, PC(20:4(8Z,11Z,14Z,17Z)/0:0), and PC(15:0/18:2(9Z,12Z)), which enriched the two significant metabolism pathways and could be the potential biomarkers.

The critical importance of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in human cancers, including cervical cancer (CC), has been discovered in recent years. However, the function and mechanism of hsa_circ_0000069 (circ_0000069) in CC have been fully understood. The expression levels of circ_0000069, microRNAs (miR-1270, miR-1276 and miR-620) and cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein 4 (CPEB4) mRNA were detected by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU), flow cytometry, wound healing, transwell and tube formation assays were used to clarify the effects of circ_0000069 on the functional behaviors of CC cells. The binding relationships among miR-1270, circ_0000069 and CPEB4 were detected by dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays. A xenograft tumor model was established to explore the effect of circ_0000069 on tumor growth in vivo. Circ_0000069 was upregulated in CC clinical samples and cell lines, and its expression was associated with the clinical stage of CC patients. Circ_0000069 knockdown significantly decreased cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and tube formation and increased cell apoptosis in vitro. Moreover, miR-1270 was a direct target of circ_0000069, and CPEB4 was the downstream target of miR-1270. Knockdown of miR-1270 reversed the inhibitory effect of circ_0000069 knockdown on CC progression, and CPEB4 overexpression overturned the effect of miR-1270 on CC progression. In xenograft experiments, the oncogenic effect of circ_0000069 on tumor growth was verified. Altogether, circ_0000069 adsorbed miR-1270 to upregulate CPEB4 expression, thereby promoting the malignant phenotypes of CC cells. Circ_0000069 might be a potential target for treatment of CC.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) has been proven to exert antianaphylaxis in atopic dermatitis, asthma, and allergic rhinitis. The aim of this study was to determine the hepatoprotective effects of RA on ovalbumin (OVA) challenge-induced intestinal allergy. The results exhibited that RA could relieve anaphylactic symptoms, decrease diarrhea, and prevent hypothermia in allergic mice. Moreover, the elevation of OVA specific IgE (OVA-sIgE), histamine, and mouse mast cell proteinases (mMCP-1) in the serum of OVA challenged mice were remarkably inhibited by RA. OVA challenge resulted in notable increases in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities, liver malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitic oxide (NO) levels, and a remarkable decrease in liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and glutathione (GSH) level. RA treatments succeeded in improving these biochemical parameters and promote the redox homeostasis. Cytokine expression evaluation showed that RA effectively enhanced the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and FOXP-3) in the liver of OVA-challenged mice. Meanwhile, the elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, mMCP-1, and iNOS) were remarkably inhibited by RA. These findings suggest that RA possesses hepatoprotective effects on OVA challenge-induced liver injury. The anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of RA potentially play vital roles in this process.

Noninvasive and sensitive thermometry of a single living cell is crucial to the analysis of fundamental cellular processes and applications to cancer diagnosis. Optical fibers decorated with temperature-sensitive nanomaterials have become widely used instruments for biosensing temperature. However, current silica fibers exhibit low compatibility and degradability in biosystems. In this work, we employ spider silks as natural optical fibers to construct biocompatible thermometers. The spider silks were drawn directly from Araneus ventricosus and were decorated with core-shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) via a photophoretic effect. By measuring the fluorescence spectra of the UCNPs on the spider silks, the membrane temperature of a single breast cancer cell was obtained with absolute and relative sensitivities ranging from 3.3 to 4.5 × 10-3 K-1 and 0.2 to 0.8% K-1, respectively. Additionally, the temperature variation during apoptosis was monitored by the thermometer in real time. This work provides a biocompatible tool for precise biosensing and single-cell analysis.

Protein components of C. militaris have been reported to possess various biological activities. In our previous research, a Cordyceps militaris-derived immunoregulatory protein (CMIP) was naturally isolated and showed the activity of inhibiting the metastasis of breast cancer cells. This study aimed to obtain recombinant CMIP (rCMIP) using recombinant expression and elucidate its ability to activate macrophages. Recombinant CMIP showed one band at approximately 15 kDa or 30 kDa, or two bands at 15 kDa and 30 kDa, under different denaturation conditions of electrophoresis. The cell binding assay showed that rCMIP selectively binds to the surface of macrophages. After adhesion, it did not induce the apoptosis of RAW 264.7 cells, but promoted their proliferation. Moreover, rCMIP significantly induced the expression of M1 macrophage polarization-related molecules. The mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of CD 86 was enhanced by 2.1-fold and 3.2-fold under 0.64 µM and 1.6 µM of rCMIP treatment, respectively. Cytokines typically expressed in M1 macrophages, such as TNF-α, iNOS, IL-6, CCL 4, CCL 5 and CXCL 10, were also considerably induced by rCMIP, while the expression of cytokines in typical M2 macrophages, like Arg-1, CCL17 and CCL22, were not changed or slightly decreased. Under rCMIP treatment, the release of NO was also appreciably induced. In the present study, we reported cloning, expression and functional characterization of rCMIP, which was naturally isolated from the fruiting body of C. militaris in our previous study. The data imply that rCMIP possesses immunomodulatory activity in macrophages.

Nε-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) is a potentially noxious compound that is causing widespread concern due to its use in various food products. In this study, we investigated CML neurotoxicity via an in vivo experiment with mice, and an in vitro experiment using a 3D microvascular network model (with human brain vascular endothelial cell and human astrocyte) that simulated the blood-brain barrier. We found that CML could induce cell survival status variations, and histopathological changes to the brain. In addition, CML increased levels of oxidative stress, prompted the protein expression of the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE). CML up-regulated both the gene expression of RAGE, the activating protein-1 (AP-1), the inflammatory cytokines Interleukin-6 (IL-6), vascular cell adhesion molecule1 (VCAM-1), monocyte chemotactic protein1 (MCP-1). We, therefore, postulated that CML has the potential to deleteriously affect the nervous system through oxidative stress and that activation of the p38 MAPK-AP-1 signaling pathway might be implicated in this pathological process.

BACKGROUND: Sesamin and sesamolin are two typical and important lignans isolated from sesame oil. Various studies have shown the bioactivity, physiological activity, and potential health benefits of the two components. In this study, a rapid method for the simultaneous determination of sesamin and sesamolin in sesame oils was proposed. The excitation-emission fluorescence spectra of the oils were obtained after a simple pretreatment, then self-weighted alternating trilinear decomposition was used to extract the quantitative information from the very overlapping spectra. RESULTS: It was found that reasonable quantification results could be obtained with the limits of detection for the two lignans. These limits were 0.05 mg/g and 0.24 mg/g, and the limits of quantitation were 0.14 mg/g and 0.74 mg/g, respectively. The average recoveries for sesamin and sesamolin were 99.05% and 94.97%. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that, with simple sample pretreatment, the application for combining excitation-emission fluorescence spectra and self-weighted alternating trilinear decomposition can be a useful and sensitive tool for the determination of lignans in sesame oil. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Nε-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), which is a compound produced when food is processed, has aroused concern in recent years because of its potentially dangerous effects. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of free CML-induced toxic injury in mice. The inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α, transforming growth factor-ß, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 mRNA expression levels of CML-infected mice liver and kidney tissues significantly increased. While CML receptor-receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) protein expression in male mice liver tissue had a more significant change than the control group, there was no significant difference in other dose groups compared with the control group. In conclusion, the foodborne free CML can be induced by oxidative stress and immune response to liver and kidney tissue injury in mice. Additionally, the free CML may also bind to RAGE, which activates the downstream inflammatory pathway.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence shows that indoor concentrations of airborne particles are often higher than is typically encountered outdoors. Since exposure to indoor PM2.5 is thought to be associated with cardiovascular disease, the health impacts of indoor air pollution need to be explored. Based on animal models, ambient particulate matter has been proved to promote coagulation which is very likely involved in the pathogenic development of cardiovascular disease. However, animal models are insufficient to predict what will happen with any certainty in humans. For this reason, the precise pathogenic mechanisms behind the development of cardiovascular disease in humans have not yet been determined. RESULTS: We generated a 3D functional human microvascular network in a microfluidic device. This model enables human vascular endothelial cells to form tissue-like microvessels that behave very similarly to human blood vessels. The perfusable microvasculature allows the delivery of particles introduced into these generated human-like microvessels to follow the fluid flow. This exposure path effectively simulates the dynamic movement of airborne nanoscale particles (ANPs) within human vessels. In this study, we first identified the existence of ANPs in indoor air pollution. We then showed that ANPs could activate endothelial cells via ROS induced inflammation, and further resulted in abnormal expression of the coagulation factors (TF, TM and t-PA) involved in coagulation cascades. In addition, we found that a protein could cover ANPs, and this biointeraction could interfere with heparan sulfate (HS). Human organotypic 3D microvessel models provide a bridge for how research outcomes can translate to humans. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D human microvessel model was used to determine the physiological responses of human vessels to ANP stimulation. Based on the obtained data, we concluded that ANPs not only disrupts normal coagulation functions, but also act directly on anticoagulant factors in human vessels. These experimental observations provide a potential biological explanation for the epidemiologically established link between ANPs and coagulation abnormality. This organ-on-chip model may provide a bridge from in vitro results to human responses.

Calibration transfer is indispensable for practical applications of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy due to the need for precise and consistent measurements across different spectrometers. In this work, a method for multi-spectrometer calibration transfer is described based on independent component analysis (ICA). A spectral matrix is first obtained by aligning the spectra measured on different spectrometers. Then, by using independent component analysis, the aligned spectral matrix is decomposed into the mixing matrix and the independent components of different spectrometers. These differing measurements between spectrometers can then be standardized by correcting the coefficients within the independent components. Two NIR datasets of corn and edible oil samples measured with three and four spectrometers, respectively, were used to test the reliability of this method. The results of both datasets reveal that spectra measurements across different spectrometers can be transferred simultaneously and that the partial least squares (PLS) models built with the measurements on one spectrometer can predict that the spectra can be transferred correctly on another.

We integrated a rigid optical trap into a tunable pulsed cavity ringdown spectroscopy (OT-CRDS) system to characterize the extinction of single airborne particles in the UV spectral region (306-315 nm). Single solid particles from a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), Bermuda grass smut spore, carbon microsphere, and blackened polyethylene microsphere were trapped in air based on the photophoretic force. The improved OT-CRDS system was highly sensitive and able to resolve extinctions of single particles from different materials and sizes at a given wavelength. Further, we successfully manipulated the number of particles, e.g., 1, 2 or more particles, in the trap and measured their distinguishable extinctions using the OT-CRDS. We also show that the particle size and extinction have a good linear correlation from the measurements of 24 single MWCNT particles. Material- and wavelength-dependent extinctions of the four types of airborne particles were also characterized. Results reveal that single airborne particles regardless of their differences in material and size, due to their heterogeneous morphology, have individual-particle dependent extinctions and that dependence can be resolved and characterized using the OT-CRDS technique.

BACKGROUND: A sedentary lifestyle and poor diet are risk factors for the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, the pathogenesis of hepatic lipid accumulation is not completely understood. Therefore, the present study explored the effects of dietary supplementation of various ratios of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on a high-fat diet-induced lipid metabolism disorder and the concurrent liver damage. METHODS: Using high-fat diet-fed C57BL/6 J mice as the animal model, diets of various ratios of DHA/EPA (2:1, 1:1, and 1:2) with an n-6/n-3 ratio of 4:1 were prepared using fish and algae oils enriched in DHA and/or EPA and sunflower seed oils to a small extent instead of the high-fat diet. RESULTS: Significantly decreased hepatic lipid deposition, body weight, serum lipid profile, inflammatory reactions, lipid peroxidation, and expression of adipogenesis-related proteins and inflammatory factors were observed for mice that were on a diet supplemented with DHA/EPA compared to those in the high-fat control group. The DHA/EPA 1:2 group showed lower serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels, lower SREBP-1C, FAS, and ACC-1 relative mRNA expression, and higher Fra1 mRNA expression, with higher relative mRNA expression of enzymes such as AMPK, PPARα, and HSL observed in the DHA/EPA 1:1 group. Lower liver TC and TG levels and higher superoxide dismutase levels were found in the DHA/EPA 2:1 group. Nonetheless, no other notable effects were observed on the biomarkers mentioned above in the groups treated with DHA/EPA compared with the DHA group. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that supplementation with a lower DHA/EPA ratio seems to be more effective at alleviating high-fat diet-induced liver damage in mice, and a DHA/EPA ratio of 1:2 mitigated inflammatory risk factors. These effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on lipid metabolism may be linked to the upregulation of Fra1 and attenuated activity of c-Jun and c-Fos, thus ultimately reducing the severity of the lipid metabolism disorder and liver damage to some extent.

Nε-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) as a novel potential noxious compound in various food products has aroused extensive concern in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the oral acute and subacute toxicity of CML in mice as per OECD 420 and 407 guidelines. Acute administration of 2000 and 5000 mg/kg CML did not induce any mortality within 14 days, nevertheless some toxicological symptoms and histopathological changes were observed. The estimated LD50 of CML was >5000 mg/kg. In subacute toxicity test, CML was dosed at 200, 500 and 1000 mg/kg in both genders for 28 days. The body weights reduced which was accompanied with the decrease of food consumptions. Hematology parameters viz. RBC, HGB and MCH showed minor alteration but these were still within normal range. Biochemical analysis of hepatic and renal function markers showed significant elevating in AST, ALT, Cr and BUN etc. Histopathological alterations were observed in lung, liver, kidney and spleen. Subacute toxicity of CML involved oxidative stress caused by reducing antioxidant enzyme (SOD and GSH-Px) activities, and significantly increasing lipid peroxide (MDA) level. In conclusion, CML was unlikely to present an acute hazard, but repeated administration could produce deleterious effects on mice especially inducing liver and kidney damage through oxidative stress.

Over 90% of diabetic patients have Type 2 diabetes. Although an elevated mean breath acetone concentration has been found to exist in Type 1 diabetes (T1D), information on breath acetone in Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has yet to be obtained. In this study, we first used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to validate a ringdown breath-acetone analyzer based on the cavity-ringdown-spectroscopy technique, through comparing breath acetone concentrations in the range 0.5-2.5 ppm measured using both methods. The linear fitting of R = 0.99 suggests that the acetone concentrations obtained using both methods are consistent with a largest standard deviation of ±0.4 ppm in the lowest concentration of the range. Next, 620 breath samples from 149 T2D patients and 42 healthy subjects were collected and tested using the breath analyzer. Four breath samples were taken from each subject under each of four different conditions: fasting, 2 h post-breakfast, 2 h post-lunch, and 2 h post-dinner. Simultaneous blood glucose levels were also measured using a standard diabetic-management blood-glucose meter. For the 149 T2D subjects, their exhaled breath acetone concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 19.8 ppm; four different ranges of breath acetone concentration, 0.1-19.8, 0.1-7.1, 0.1-6.3, and 0.1-9.5 ppm, were obtained for the subjects under the four different conditions, respectively. For the 42 healthy subjects, their breath acetone concentration ranged from 0.1 to 2.6 ppm; four different ranges of breath acetone concentration, 0.3-2.6, 0.1-2.6, 0.1-1.7, and 0.3-1.6 ppm, were obtained for the four different conditions. The mean breath acetone concentration of the 149 T2D subjects was determined to be 1.5 ± 1.5 ppm, which was 1.5 times that of 1.0 ± 0.6 ppm for the 42 healthy subjects. No correlation was found between the breath acetone concentration and the blood glucose level of the T2D subjects and the healthy volunteers. This study using a relatively large number of subjects provides new data regarding breath acetone in diabetes (T1D and T2D) and suggests that an elevated mean breath acetone concentration also exists in T2D.

Several novel chiral bifunctional L-thiazoline-thiourea derivatives were easily synthesized from commercially available L-cysteine in high yield. These catalysts were subsequently applied to the enantioselective Michael addition of acetylacetone to ß-nitrostyrenes. The products with S configuration were obtained in 98% enantiomeric excess (ee) when the L-thiazoline-thiourea derivatives were used. A plausible transition state model is proposed to explain the observed enantioselectivities.

This study is designed to evaluate antioxidant and antigenotoxic activities of corn tassel extracts (CTTs). The major bioactive components of CTTs include flavonoid, saponin and polysaccharide. The antioxidant properties of the three bioactive components of CTTs were investigated by Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Property (FRAP) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. The activities of the extracts were determined by assessing the inhibition of mutagenicity of the direct-acting mutagen fenaminosulf, sodium azide, and indirect-acting mutagen 2-aminofluorene using the Ames test (strains TA98 and TA100). The results showed that the extraction rates of flavonoid, saponin, and polysaccharide from the dried corn tassels were 1.67%, 2.41% and 4.76% respectively. DPPH and FRAP assay strongly demonstrated that CTTs had antioxidant properties. CTTs at doses of 625, 1250 and 2500 µg per plate reduced 2-aminofluorene mutagenicity by 12.52%, 28.76% and 36.49% in Salmonella typhimurium TA98 strain assay respectively and by 10.98%, 25.27% and 37.83%, at the same doses in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 assay system, respectively. 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay showed that the different concentrations of CTTs inhibited the proliferation of MGC80-3 cells in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.01). It is concluded that these integrated approaches to antioxidant and antigenotoxicity assessment may be useful to study corn tassel as a natural herbal material.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the effect of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) on diabetic macular edema (DME) staging and assess the efficacy of laser photocoagulation. METHODS: Eighty-six patients (141 eyes) with suspected DME who visited our hospital from August 2019 to March 2022 were selected and underwent fundus angiography and OCTA. The two examination methods were compared in terms of their efficacy in macular edema staging. Subsequently, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of OCTA in diagnosing DME were assessed using fundus angiography as the gold standard. In patients with clinically significant macular edema (CSME) treated with laser photocoagulation, the central concave non-perfused zone (FAZ), vascular density (VD), central macular retinal thickness (CRT), whole retinal blood flow density (FD-300), superficial capillary plexus (SCP), and deep capillary plexus (DCP) were measured using the OCTA 3 mm × 3 mm mode before treatment, at 3 months after treatment, and at 6 months after treatment. SCP, deep capillary plexus (DCP), blood flow density (VD), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and central retinal thickness (CRT) were recorded before treatment, 3 months after treatment, and 6 months after treatment. The correlation between BCVA and pre-treatment OCTA parameters at 6 months after treatment was analyzed using Pearson's correlation. RESULTS: Fundus angiography was performed in 86 patients (141 eyes) with suspected DME. Of the 141 eyes, 44 had no leakage, 52 had diffuse edema, 40 had focal macular edema, and 5 had eyes ischemia. A total of 97 eyes showed CSME on fundus angiography. Using fundus angiography as the gold standard, OCTA exhibited a sensitivity of 97.94 %, a specificity of 63.64 %, and an accuracy of 87.23 % in diagnosing CSME. The Kappa value between OCTA and fundus angiography was 0.674. The receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that the area under the curve (AUC) of OCTA in diagnosing CSME was 0.808 (95 % confidence interval: 0.717-0.899). The BCVA was higher, while the CRT was lower in CSME patients at 3 and 6 months after treatment (P<0.05). No significant difference was observed in the OCTA parameters in CSME patients at 3 months after treatment compared with that before treatment (P>0.05). Similarly, no significant difference was found in the FD300 of CSME patients at 6 months after treatment compared with that before treatment (P>0.05). However, the FAZ area, DCP-VD (overall, central concave, and paracentral concave), and SCP-VD (overall, central concave, and paracentral concave) were higher in CSME patients at 6 months after treatment compared with that before treatment (P<0.05). Pearson's correlation showed that BCVA was positively correlated with pre-treatment FAZ area, DCP-VD, and SCP-VD (r>0, P<0.05), and negatively associated with CRT (r<0, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: OCTA exhibited high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosis and staging DME. It adeptly captures the microvascular and visual changes in the central macular recess before and after laser photocoagulation therapy, which can quantitatively guide the follow-up treatment of DME.

To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of robot-assisted adrenalectomy (RA) and laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) for pheochromocytoma (PHEO). We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase databases for studies comparing RA and LA treatment for PHEO, covering the period from database inception to January 1, 2024. Two researchers will independently screen literature and extract data, followed by meta-analysis using Review Manager 5.3 software. Six studies with 658 patients were included in the analysis. There were no significant differences in operation time [MD = -8.03, 95% CI (-25.68,9.62), P > 0.05], transfusion rate [OR = 1.10, 95% CI (0.55, 2.19) , P > 0.05], conversion rate [OR = 0.31, 95% CI (0.08, 1.12), P > 0.05], complication rate [OR = 0.93, 95% CI (0.52, 1.70), P > 0.05], Intraoperative max SBP [MD = -4.08, 95% CI (-10.13,1.97), P > 0.05], Intraoperative min SBP [MD = -2.71, 95% CI (-9.60,4.18), P > 0.05] among patients undergoing RA and LA. However, compared with patients who underwent LA, patients who underwent RA had less estimated blood loss [MD = -37.72, 95% CI (-64.11,-11.33), P < 0.05], a shorter length of hospital stay [MD = -0.43, 95% CI (-0.65,-0.21) P < 0.05]. RA has higher advantages in some aspects compared to LA. RA is a feasible, safe, and comparable treatment option for PHEO.

In this study, a type of luminescent porous coordination network-224 (PCN-224) in alkaline conditions was synthesized with the dramatic fluorescence enhancement by 20.4 times, which was explained by the fact that the decrease of Zr4+ content in alkaline conditions resulted in the partial recovery of the electron cloud density of 4,4',4'',4'''-(Porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl) tetrakis(benzoic acid) (TCPP). Given the large overlap between the excitation spectrum of PCN-224 and the absorption band of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), the coating of the Ag layer on PCN-224 triggered the fluorescence quenching effect, which was applied to "turn off" fluorescence immunoassay for sensitive detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) in milk. The proposed immunoassay reached a low limit of detection (LOD) of 3.3 × 102 CFU mL-1, 29.7 times more sensitive than the conventional ELISA. It will provide a novel alternative strategy for sensitively detecting pathogenic bacteria in the field of food safety.
