RESUMEN

Colombia faces the complex humanitarian challenges of locating approximately 100,000 missing persons and identifying thousands who are deceased. Identification is a difficult task in many cases, because the skeletonized bodies are deteriorated, missing person data are unavailable for comparison, and the provenance of the remains is often totally unknown. Isotopic analysis of human tissues (e.g., bone, hair, nails, and teeth) aid in the identification process of unknown individuals because they can provide valuable information on possible geographic origin. This project evaluated the isotopic variability of carbon (C), oxygen (O), strontium (Sr), and lead (Pb) in modern Colombian teeth according to city, department (a political designation similar to "state" in the US or Mexico), and one of four geographically determined regions of origin; and assessed its utility for human identification in Colombia. Isotopic data (O-C-Sr-Pb) were analyzed from modern Colombians originating from the cities of Bogotá, Cali, and Neiva (n = 95); and these data were compiled with published Colombian data of individuals mainly from the city of Medellín (n = 61). Results indicate a wide range and overlap of O-C-Sr-Pb isotopic distribution according to the defined categories. However, differences between coastal and lowland individuals are observed when using δ18 O values, and differences between mountainous regions are observed when using 87 Sr/86 Sr values. In addition, this study suggests that the usefulness of isotopic analysis for unidentified individuals in Colombia would be with assigning them geographically using the designations of North, Central Andes, Eastern Andes, or Southwest Andes versus making classifications at a city or department level.

In cases of incineration, where the identification of victims by conventional methods is impossible, teeth and dental materials become an available source of evidence - thanks to their ability to resist high temperatures. Currently, there is no experimental research to determine the behavior of the bracket and the dental structure when it is attached to the tooth after being exposed to high temperatures. An experimental in vitro study was carried out on 60 upper and lower premolar teeth (30 with a cemented bracket and 30 teeth without a bracket) that were exposed to six temperature ranges (200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, 1000 °C and 1200 °C). With the help of an Optiks® binocular stereomicroscope, macroscopic changes were described for each temperature; in addition, the mesio-distal diameter of the crown of the teeth and the bracket were measured before and after the incineration. A comparison of the diameters between the groups [the experimental group and the control group] and between the different temperatures was made. Both teeth, with brackets and without brackets showed macroscopic changes, such as fissures, cracks, fragmentation, enamel bursting and enamel and dentin separation according to the temperature range exposed. The detachment of the bracket was presented at 600 °C - leaving a mark on the dental surface. At above 1000 °C, the crown of the tooth with bracket acquired a pink color and the surface of the bracket became rough and opaque. At above 400 °C, both groups experienced an expansion in the crown dimension without significant differences. The results of this research suggest that teeth with attached brackets are equally resistant as the teeth without brackets, and that the adhesion of these attachments to the dental structure leave characteristics that allow them to be differentiated from teeth without braces -as well as suggesting the orientation to the temperature exposure.

The aim is to study the sexual dimorphism of the base of the skull in radiographs of a bone collection of contemporary Colombian adults, with the intention of formulating discriminant functions capable of classifying sex in this population. The sample consisted of 115 skull base radiographs, (44 females and 71 males), which originated from the Colombian Human Skeletals Collection. Radiographs with good contrast were selected. Images of skulls with asymmetries and fractures were excluded. Five measures: Maximum cranial base length, Foramen magnum length, Maximum cranial breadth, Bizygomatic breadth, Foramen magnum breadth length, were preformed using ImageJ5 software ®; an intra-observer error was determined using paired t-test. Statistical analysis showed a sexual dimorphism for all variables (p < 0.05). The step-by-step procedure of the discriminant function selected 2 variables from the 5 (Foramen magnum length and Bizygomatic breadth) and the precision was between 86.4% and 88.6% in the determination of sex. However cross-validation showed an accuracy of 85.7% to male and 87.2% to female. The skull base is highly dimorphic. The established discriminant functions can be used to estimate sex in the Colombian population.

The aim of this study was to determine the differences in arch length, inter-canine distance, inter-premolar distance, intermolar distance and arch shape between dental discrepancies (crowding and spacing) in a sample of dental casts from the Afro-Colombian population of San Basilio de Palenque. An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of 63 subjects aged 11 to 57years, of Afro-Colombian origin, with full dentition from first molar to first molar, without extensive caries or restorations, and excluding casts with defects due to loss. The differences between arch (upper and lower) variables were analyzed according to dental discrepancies. Plaster models digitalized with a TR1OS3 Mono scanner with exactitude (6.9 ± 0.9 pm) and precision (4.5 ± 0.9 pm) were analyzed with Orthonalyzer software. Statistical analyses were done on SPSS software (Version 20 for Windows) and Real Statistics. Spacing discrepancy of68.25% was found for upper arch and 66.66% for lower arch; crowding discrepancy of 19.04% for upper arch and 20.63% for lower arch, and an adequate ratio of 12.69% for both arches. No statistically significant difference (p>0.05) was found between arch parameters except for inter-premolar distance on the lower arch. The most frequent arch shape in the population was oval for both upper arch, with 76.19%, and lower arch, with 71.42%. Tooth size was larger in males than females but the difference was not statistically significant.


El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar las diferencias en longitud de arco, distancia intercanina, interpremolar, intermolar y la forma de arco entre discrepancias dentales (apiñamiento y espaciamiento), en una muestra de modelos dentales de la población afrocolombiana de San Basilio de Palenque. Se realizó un estudio analítico transversal, en una muestra por conveniencia de 63 sujetos con un rango de edad entre 11 y 57 años, de origen afrocolombiano, quienes tuvieron dentición completa de primer molar a primer molar, sin caries extensas, ni restauraciones; se excluyeron los modelos con defectos por el vaciado. Se analizaron las diferencias entre las variables de los maxilares (superior e inferior) con las discrepancias dentales. Se utilizaron modelos de yeso que fueron digitalizados con el escánerTR1OS3 Mono con una exactitud de (6.9 ± 0.9 pm) y una precisión de (4.5 ± 0.9 pm)y analizados con el software Orthonalyzer. Los análisis estadísticos se llevaron a cabo utilizando el software SPSS (Versión 20 para Windows) y Real Statistics. Se encontró una discrepancia de espaciamiento de un 68,25% para el arco superior y 66,66% en el arco inferior; y una discrepancia de apiñamiento en el arco superior de 19,04% e inferior de 20,63% y una relación adecuada de 12,69% para los dos arcos. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p>0.05) en los parámetros de arco a excepción de la distancia interpremolar del arco inferior. La forma de arco más frecuente en la población fue ovalada tanto en el arco superior con un 76,19% como en el arco inferior con un 71,42%. En cuanto al tamaño dental, se presentó mayor tamaño en los hombres que en las mujeres, pero este no fue estadísticamente significativo.

Lamendin et al. (J Forensic Sci 1992;37:1373) developed a general technique to estimate age of adults at death using two dental features: periodontosis and translucency of the tooth root. Prince and Ubelaker (J Forensic Sci 2002;47:107) modified this method, creating a formula for each sex and for different ancestries, and obtained more precise age estimations. In the present study, the validity of each method was tested in 45 males and 34 females of Spanish Caucasian origin, and a novel formula, based on Prince and Ubelaker method, was specifically developed for a population of mixed racial origin (mestizo) from Colombia, and findings obtained were again compared with those yielded by Lamendin adult dental aging technique. The Prince and Ubelaker method proved more accurate than the Lamendin technique in the Spanish Caucasian population, and our Prince and Ubelaker-based formula was also more accurate than the Lamendin et al. In both populations, the Lamendin method showed a higher mean error in estimations of the age of youngest and oldest individuals. These findings confirm the need to create specific formulas for each human group in order to obtain more accurate age estimates.

Estimation of stature is an important factor in the identification of the deceased from unknown fragmentary and dismembered remains. The skull sometimes is the only remain available for identification. The aim of the present study was to estimate the stature of an individual from cephalo-facial dimensions. The study was carried out on 54 males and 16 females from the bone collection of the contemporary Colombian population that belongs to the National Institute of Legal Medicine. Ten cephalo-facial measurements were also made on each subject. The stature of each individual in centimeters was taken from the registration and/or from the autopsy document. The results indicate that the measurements N-M (p<0.001) and G-Op, Ba-N, Ma-SN (p<0.05) are correlated with stature for males. The correlation between these measures with stature for females was not significant. However, the formulae obtained from univariate linear regression analysis using cephalo-facial measurements showed a greater degree of reliability for estimation of stature in males and females.

RESUMEN

Several authors who have discussed human variability and its impact on the forensic identification of bodies pose the need for regional studies documenting the global variation of the attributes analyzed osteological characteristics that aid in establishing biological profile (sex, ancestry, biological age and height). This is primarily accomplished by studying documented human skeletal collections in order to investigate secular trends in skeletal development and aging, among others in the Colombian population. The purpose of this paper is to disclose the details of the new "Contemporary Colombian Skeletal Reference Collection" that currently comprises 600 identified skeletons of both sexes, who died between 2005 and 2008; and which contain information about their cause of death. This collection has infinite potential for research, open to the national and international community, and still has pending opportunities to address a variety of topics such as studies on osteopathology, bone trauma and taphonomic studies.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Various in vitro studies report that latex and non-latex elastics lose some of their initial force after they have been placed in the oral cavity. However, several differences occur within one single manufacturer, which could be of importance in selecting elastics. The aim of the present study was to conduct an in vitro evaluation of force loss in latex and non-latex elastics of a same manufacturer, activated in conditions simulating the oral cavity. Methods: we used 40 intermaxillary latex (n = 20) and non-latex (n = 20) »" 6 oz (170.10 g) elastics, stretched to 18 mm and immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours. Force-displacement was measured using a test dynamometer, calculating the percentage of force relaxation (%R) at 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the groups. Results: latex elastics significantly offered greater force than non-latex elastics during all evaluations (p < 0.05). The %R in latex elastics at 24 hours was 8.7% and 9.2% in non-latex elastics. The largest force loss in both materials occurred during the first six hours. The difference in %R between the two materials was statistically significant between 0 and 6 hours. Conclusions: the latex and non-latex elastics used in this study can be equally used in clinical practice. However, the use of both elastics must be kept under strict control to achieve efficient orthodontic mechanics, since the period of greatest instability occurred between 0 and 6 hours.


RESUMEN Introducción: diversos estudios in vitro reportan que los elásticos látex y no látex pierden parte de su fuerza inicial después de su colocación intraoral. Sin embargo, en un solo fabricante existen diferencias internas que pueden ser importantes durante la selección de los elásticos. El objetivo de esta investigación consistió en evaluar in vitro la pérdida de fuerza en elásticos látex y no látex de un mismo fabricante, activados en condiciones similares a la cavidad oral. Métodos: se utilizaron 40 elásticos intermaxilares látex (n = 20) y no látex (n = 20) de »" 6 oz (170,10 g), extendidos a 18 mm y sumergidos en saliva artificial por 24 horas. Se obtuvo la medición de fuerza-desplazamiento utilizando un dinamómetro de prueba y se calculó el porcentaje de relajación de la fuerza (%R) a las 0, 6, 12, 18 y 24 horas. Se utilizó la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis para hacer la comparación entre los grupos. Resultados: los elásticos látex ofrecieron una fuerza significativamente mayor que los no látex durante todas las evaluaciones (p < 0,05). El %R para los elásticos látex a las 24 horas fue de 8,7% y de 9,2% para los no látex. La mayor pérdida de fuerza en ambos materiales se produjo durante las primeras seis horas. La diferencia en %R entre los dos materiales fue estadísticamente significativa entre las 0 y 6 horas. Conclusiones: los elásticos no látex utilizados en este estudio pueden ser aplicados en clínica al igual que los de látex. Sin embargo, el uso de ambos elásticos debe mantenerse bajo estricto control para obtener una mecánica ortodóncica eficiente, ya que el periodo de mayor inestabilidad se produjo entre las 0 y 6 horas.
