RESUMEN

Tequila production in Mexico generates large quantities of agave bagasse (AB), a waste that could be used more efficiently. AB has a high cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content, which allows its use as a precursor for synthesizing carbonaceous materials. In the present work, the synthesis of activated carbon impregnated with Fe2+ (AG-Fe-II) and Fe3+ (AG-Fe-III) was carried out and evaluated in a hybrid adsorption-AOP (advanced oxidation process) methodology for sulfamethazine removal (SMT). The materials were characterized before and after the process to determine their morphological, textural, and physicochemical properties. Subsequently, the effect of the main operational variables (pH, initial SMT concentration, mass, and activator dosage) on the hybrid adsorption-degradation process was studied. The Fenton-like reaction was selected as the AOP for the degradation step, and potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) was used as an activating agent. The main iron crystallographic phases in AG-Fe-II were FeS, with a uniform distribution of iron particles over the material's surface. The main crystallographic phase for AG-Fe-III was Fe3O4. The hybrid process achieved 61% and 78% removal efficiency using AG-Fe-II and AG-Fe-III samples, respectively. The pH and initial SMT concentration were the most critical factors for removing SMT from an aqueous phase. Finally, the material was successfully tested in repeated adsorption-degradation cycles.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present research is to show the development of a sustainability-oriented lab that teaches adsorption concepts in a virtual environment based on the premise "learning-through-play". Kinetic results in the virtual environment are contrasted to those obtained experimentally when diverse adsorbents prepared from Agave Bagasse (Raw Fibers, Hydrothermal Fibers, and Activated Fibers) were synthesized. Comparison between virtual and real-life experiments involving removal of methylene blue in solution showed that a pseudo-first-order model could describe adsorption kinetics satisfactorily. The study is complemented with a characterization of the adsorbents through SEM, nitrogen adsorption isotherms, FTIR and Raman. In addition, the environmental impact of the synthesis of adsorbents was evaluated through well-known methodologies (GAPI, NEMI, and Eco-Scale), which agree that raw fibers are the most eco-friendly material. This research provides an exciting opportunity to advance our knowledge on developing new technologies for teaching in engineering and to compliment real-life practices that consider environmental impacts with virtual experiments.

Productive activities such as pig farming are a fundamental part of the economy in Mexico. Unfortunately, because of this activity, large quantities of wastewater are generated that have a negative impact in the environment. This work shows an alternative for treating piggery wastewater based on advanced oxidation processes (Fenton and solar photo Fenton, SPF) that have been probed successfully in previous works. In the first stage, Fenton and SPF were carried out on a laboratory scale using a Taguchi L9-type experimental design. From the statistical analysis of this design, the operating parameters: pH, time, hydrogen peroxide concentration [H2O2], and iron ferrous concentration [Fe2+] that maximize the response variables: Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), and color were chosen. From these, a cascade forward neural network was implemented to establish a correlation between data from the variables to the physicochemical parameters to be measure being that a great fit of the data was obtained having a correlation coefficient of 0.99 which permits to optimize the pollutant degradation and predict the removal efficiencies at pilot scale but with a projection to a future industrial scale. A relevant result, it was found that the optimal values for maximizing the removal of physicochemical parameters were pH = 3, time = 60 min, H2O2/COD = 1.5 mg L-1, and H2O2/Fe2+ = 2.5 mg L-1. With these conditions degradation percentages of 91.44%, 47.14%, and 97.89% for COD, TOC, and color were obtained from the Fenton process, while for SPF the degradation percentage increased moderately. From the ANN analysis, the possibility to establish an intelligent system that permits to predict multiple results from operational conditions has been achieved.

BACKGROUND: A high proportion of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survivors may develop long-term cognitive impairment. We aimed to develop a multivariate causal model exposing the links between COVID-19-associated biomarkers, illness-related variables, and their effects on cognitive performance. METHODS: In this prospective study, we assess the potential drivers for the development of cognitive impairment in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia aged ≥ 18 years at 6-month follow-up after hospital discharge, using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Patients with pre-existing cognitive impairment were excluded. Laboratory results at hospital admission were clustered by principal component analysis (PCA) and included in a path analysis model evaluating the causal relationship between age, comorbidities, hypoxemia, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) requirement, in-hospital delirium, and cognitive performance. RESULTS: We studied 92 patients: 54 (58.7%) men and 38 (41.3%) women, with median age of 50 years (interquartile range 42-55), among whom 50 (54.4%) tested positive for cognitive impairment at 6-month follow-up. Path analysis revealed a direct link between the thrombo-inflammatory component of PCA (C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and neutrophils) and hypoxemia severity at hospital admission. Our model showed that low PaO2/FiO2 ratio values, unlike the thrombo-inflammatory component, had a direct effect on cognitive performance, independent from age, in-hospital delirium, and invasive mechanical ventilation. CONCLUSION: In this study, biomarkers of thrombo-inflammation in COVID-19 and low PaO2/FiO2 had a negative effect on cognitive performance 6 months after hospital discharge. These results highlight the critical role of hypoxemia as a driver for impaired cognition in the mid-term.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is characterized by a clonal expansion of plasma cells in the bone marrow. These cells typically produce a monoclonal immunoglobulin, and its symptoms arise either from plasma cell infiltration in several organs, or secondary to the presence of a monoclonal protein peak. Symptoms can be summarized by the acronym CRAB (hypercalcemia, renal failure, anemia and bone lesions). Sometimes, in the setting of a protein secreting monoclonal gammopathy, formation of cryoglobulins develops. Cryoglobulins are plasma proteins that precipitate at low temperatures, forming a cold - induced precipitate at small vessels, causing a wide range of clinical manifestations. We report a female consulting for ulcers lasting 2 months in the left foot associated with purpuric lesions in both lower limbs. Protein electrophoresis showed a monoclonal peak in the gamma region. Bone marrow aspirate showed 27% of plasma cells with kappa chain restriction by cytometry. The presence of cryoglobulins was confirmed. The patient was treated with dexamethasone and bortezomib, with a progressive healing of lower limb lesions and disappearance of cryoglobulins. She was discharged in good conditions.

BACKGROUND: The prompt recognition of an acute neurovascular syndrome by the patient or a bystander witnessing the event can directly influence outcome. We aimed to study the predictive value of the medical history and clinical features recognized by the patients' bystanders to preclassify acute stroke syndromes in prehospital settings. METHODS: We analyzed 369 patients: 209 (56.6%) with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), 107 (29.0%) with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and 53 (14.4%) with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). All patients had neuroimaging as diagnostic gold standard. We constructed clinical prediction rules (CPRs) with features recognized by the bystanders witnessing the stroke onset to classify the acute neurovascular syndromes before final arrival to the emergency room (ER). RESULTS: In all, 83.2% cases were referred from other centers, and only 16.8% (17.2% in AIS, 15% in ICH, and 18.9% in SAH) had direct ER arrival. The time to first assessment in ≤ 3 h occurred in 72.4% (73.7%, 73.8%, and 64.2%, respectively), and final ER arrival in ≤ 3 h occurred in 26.8% (32.1%, 15.9%, and 28.3%, respectively). Clinical features referred by witnesses had low positive predictive values (PPVs) for stroke type prediction. Language or speech disorder + focal motor deficit showed 63.3% PPV, and 77.0% negative predictive value (NPV) for predicting AIS. Focal motor deficit + history of hypertension had 35.9% PPV and 78.8% NPV for ICH. Headache alone had 27.9% PPV and 95.3% NPV for SAH. In multivariate analyses, seizures, focal motor deficit, and hypertension increased the probability of a time to first assessment in ≤ 3 h, while obesity was inversely associated. Final ER arrival was determined by age and a direct ER arrival without previous referrals. CONCLUSION: CPRs constructed with the witnesses' narrative had only adequate NPVs in the prehospital classification of acute neurovascular syndromes, before neuroimaging confirmation.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a noninvasive, radiation-free, bedside tool to monitor ventilation distribution in real time. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, in pediatric COVID-19 patients, the ventilation distribution using EIT and compare it to thoracic computed tomography (TCT) or chest radiograph results obtained in these patients. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational clinical study including pediatric patients admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital. The patients monitored with EIT tested positive for COVID-19 and were submitted to the previously mentioned radiation exams. EIT monitoring lasted 15 min and no sedation was used. RESULTS: Six patients were included in this study. The main differences observed in the EIT were in the right-left distribution and were compatible with the morphological changes found in the TCT or radiograph images due to COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSION: We conclude that EIT is ready to investigate the ventilatory profile present at different lung diseases, including COVID-19, and might postpone or mitigate the need of repeated ionizing radiation exams in the pediatric population, although larger pediatric cohorts comparing to standard radiological imaging are needed.

OBJECTIVES: The frequency and implications of peripheral artery disease (PAD) in some risk groups are not entirely characterized in Latin America. We studied PAD prevalence, risk factors, and six-month outcomes in stable outpatients with a history of a recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS), or at high coronary risk. METHODS: We recruited 830 outpatients in 43 Mexican sites (median age: 64.8 years; 57.8% men). Inclusion criteria were age >18 years, and ACS within 30 days, or age <55 years plus ≥2 major vascular risk factors, or age ≥55 years plus ≥1 vascular risk factors. Patients received standardized assessments at baseline and six-month follow-up for medical history, ankle-brachial index (ABI), and the Edinburgh Claudication Questionnaire (ECQ). RESULTS: ABI <0.8 was found in 10.5%, <0.9 in 22.5%, >1.3 in 4.8%, and >1.4 in 3.6%, without differences according to sex or selection criteria. Positive ECQ was found in 7.6%. ABI <0.9 was directly associated with age, diabetes, ACS, and chronic kidney disease, but inversely associated with BMI >27. The six-month case-fatality and atherothrombotic events rates were 1.6% and 3.6%, respectively. In patients with ABI <0.9 and ABI <0.8, the six-month case-fatality rates were 2.5% (p = 0.27) and 5.4% (p = 0.03), respectively. In a Cox proportional-hazards model, baseline factors associated with death were age ≥65, ABI <0.8, and ACS. CONCLUSIONS: Subclinical PAD is more common than symptomatic claudication in high-risk coronary outpatients. Low ABI is associated with reduced short-term survival in patients with recent ACS or at high coronary risk.

BACKGROUND: Acute Kidney Injury is a complication in children with heart disease undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. The aim of this study is to describe the behavior of KIM-1 (Kidney Injury Molecule) and NGAL (Neutrophil Gelatinase Associated Lipocalin) as early predictors of renal damage, comparing them with serum creatinine and creatinine clearance, in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS: Twenty-one (21) neonates, under 4 kg, with complex congenital heart diseases, RACHS-1 > 3, without preoperative renal failure, were studied. Serum creatinine and creatinine clearance were measured preoperatively and at 24, 48, 72, 96 hours postoperatively. Urinary samples of KIM-1(pg/ml) and NGAL (ng/ml) were collected after induction of anesthesia at 24 and 48 hours post-operatively. RESULTS: nRIFLE criteria were used to divide cohorts in "NO AKI" (12 patients) and "AKI" (nine patients). In the AKI group, serum creatinine increased significantly and creatinine clearance decreased significantly at 24, 48, and 72 hours compared with their respective baseline values. There was no difference in KIM-1 and NGAL values between patients who developed AKI and those who did not at any measured time. CONCLUSIONS: The deterioration of renal function continues to be one of the most frequent complications in this population. In our study, biomarkers did not show any correlation with the appearance of AKI. It remains to be seen whether this behavior of the biomarkers is linked with the non-consistent release of these types of molecules in immature kidneys. It is likely that a larger panel of biomarkers together with other glomerular filtration rate assessment methods will provide more information about AKI diagnosis.

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is routinely estimated using endogenous biomarkers due to the complexity of direct measurement methods. Cystatin C is a protease inhibitor produced in all nucleated cells. It is freely filtered and then catabolized by renal tubular cells. Therefore, plasma concentration of cystatin C depends primarily on GFR. Serum cystatin C is less affected by muscle mass, diet, race, gender and age than creatinine. In the general population, equations to estimate GFR based on cystatin C do not have a better performance than those based on creatinine. However, formulas that combine creatinine and cystatin C are more accurate and precise. Estimation of GFR based on cystatin C could be useful in populations in which creatinine value may be biased, such as people with extremely low or high muscle mass, cirrhosis and chronic cardiorenal syndrome. Due to its higher cost in comparison to creatinine, we recommend measuring cystatin C on these clinical situations and when a more accurate estimation of GFR is required.

BACKGROUND: The recognition of stroke symptoms by patients or bystanders directly affects the outcomes of patients with acute cerebrovascular disease. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to assess the predictive value of the medical his- tory and clinical features recognized by the patients' bystanders to classify neurovascular syndromes in pre-hospital settings. METHODS: We included 150 stroke patients of two Mexican referral centers: 50 with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), 50 with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and 50 with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The performance of clinical prediction rules (CPR) to identify the stroke types was evaluated with features recognized by the patients' bystanders before hospital arrival. The impact of CPRs on early arrival and in-hospital mortality was also analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, 72% of the patients had previous medical evaluations in other centers before final referral to our hospitals, and therefore, only 45% had a final onset- to-door time <6 h, even when the first medical assessment had occurred in ≤1 h in 75% of cases. Clinical features noticed by the patients' bystanders had low positive predictive values (PPV) for any stroke type. The CPR "language or speech disor- der + focal motor deficit" had 93% sensitivity and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 84% to distinguish AIS. In SAH, head- ache alone showed a sensitivity of 84% and NPV of 97%. No CPR had an adequate performance on ICH. CPRs were not as- sociated with final onset-to-door time. Altered consciousness, age ≥65 years, indirect arrival with stops before final referral, and atrial fibrillation increased in-hospital mortality. CONCLUSION: Clinical features referred by the witness of a neurovascular emergency have limited PPV, but adequate NPV in ruling-out AIS and SAH among stroke types. The use of CPRs had no impact on onset-to-door time or in-hospital mortality when the final arrival to a third-level center occurs with previous medical refer- rals.

Although podocephalol (1) and its derived acetate 2 were found in Lasianthaea podocephala four decades ago, and 1 was later detected in the essential oils of several vegetal species, its absolute configuration (AC) and conformational preferences remained to be established. The structures of ar-himachalene 1, now isolated from Lasianthaea aurea, and its derived acetate 2, were herein confirmed by extensive 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies, while the conformational preferences of the cycloheptene was established by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which in combination with vibrational circular dichroism measurements provided the (R) absolute configuration of the molecules. The structure and AC were further verified through the Flack and Hooft parameters calculations derived from single crystal X-ray diffraction data of 2. In addition, careful evaluation of the crystal data allowed observing supramolecular layers cell package, an uncommon property in natural terpenes that might have potential applications. A transmission electron microscopy analysis of crystal of 2 was also possible, providing its physical characteristics at the micrometric scale.

Central American (CA) and Breeding Stock-G (BSG) humpback whales are known to winter off Caño Island, Costa Rica at different times of the year. To study their singing behavior, autonomous underwater recorders were used to record the whales. Song detection for BSG whales was higher than CA whales, and song structure was distinct for each population. No strong evidence for cross-equatorial connectivity was found. This study provides the first humpback whale song reference for both populations in Costa Rica, which can help advance understanding of CA and BSG whale song rate of change and connectivity with other wintering areas.

RESUMEN

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best approximation to global renal function and its estimation is of great relevance for clinical practice. Since the measurement of GFR by reference methods is complex, costly and not widely available, its routine evaluation is performed using endogenous biomarkers. Within these, creatinine is the most commonly used. It allows the estimation of GFR by means of its clearance or by formulas based on its concentration on plasma. Creatinine measurement should be performed using enzimatic methods as they confer more accurate values than Jaffe methods, especially for normal and low creatinine levels.

Recently, we have witnessed major improvements in cancer treatment. Early diagnosis and development of new therapies have reduced cancer-related mortality. However, these new therapies, along with greater patient survival, are associated with an increase in untoward effects, particularly in the cardiovascular system. Although cardiotoxicity induced by oncologic treatments affects predominantly the myocardium, it can also involve other structures of the cardiovascular system, becoming one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in those who survive cancer. The main objective of cardio-oncology is to achieve the maximum benefits of oncologic treatments while minimizing their deleterious cardiovascular effects. It harbors the stratification of patients at risk of cardiotoxicity, the implementation of diagnostic tools (imaging techniques and biomarkers) for early diagnosis, preventive strategies and early treatment options for the complications. Herein, we discuss the basic knowledge for the implementation of cardio-oncology units and their role in the management of cancer patients, the diagnostic tools available to detect cardiotoxicity and the present therapeutic options.

BACKGROUND: During the last decade, the spread of many flaviviruses (Genus Flavivirus) has been reported, representing an emerging threat for both animal and human health. To further study utility of wild ruminant samples in West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance, we assessed spatio-temporal trends and factors associated with WNV and cross-reacting flaviviruses exposure, particularly Usutu virus (USUV) and Meaban virus (MBV), in wild ruminants in Spain. Serum samples from 4693 wild ruminants, including 3073 free-living red deer (Cervus elaphus), 201 fallow deer (Dama dama), 125 mouflon (Ovis aries musimon), 32 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and 1262 farmed red deer collected in 2003-2014, were screened for WNV and antigenically-related flavivirus antibodies using a blocking ELISA (bELISA). Positive samples were tested for neutralizing antibodies against WNV, USUV and MBV by virus micro-neutralization tests. RESULTS: Mean flavivirus seroprevalence according to bELISA was 3.4 ± 0.5 % in red deer, 1.0 ± 1.4 % in fallow deer, 2.4 ± 2.7 % in mouflon and 0 % in roe deer. A multivariate logistic regression model revealed as main risk factors for seropositivity in red deer; year (2011), the specific south-coastal bioregion (bioregion 5) and presence of wetlands. Red deer had neutralizing antibodies against WNV, USUV and MBV. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate endemic circulation of WNV, USUV and MBV in Spanish red deer, even in areas without known flavivirus outbreaks. WNV antibodies detected in a free-living red deer yearling sampled in 2010, confirmed circulation this year. Co-circulation of WNV and USUV was detected in bioregions 3 and 5, and of WNV and MBV in bioregion 3. Sampling of hunted and farmed wild ruminants, specifically of red deer yearlings, could be a complementary way to national surveillance programs to monitor the activity of emerging flaviviruses.

BACKGROUND: In 2004, we initiated an inception cohort of patients with recent-onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Hand function was incorporated into evaluations from 2014 onward. The objectives were to examine hand function in our cohort, compare hand function with function in healthy controls and determine the factors associated with impaired function. METHODS: From February 2014 to June 2015, 139 patients (97.2 % of the cohort) had disease activity scored (28 joints, [DAS28]); the Michigan Hand Outcome Questionnaire (MHQ) and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Outcome Measure (DASH) were completed, and the tip-, key- and palmar-pinch and grip strengths were measured. Sixty-nine healthy controls underwent the same evaluations. Ninety-nine patients underwent a second evaluation one year after their baseline. Descriptive statistics and linear regression models were used. Patients and controls signed informed consent. RESULTS: Patients were primarily middle-aged females with a median disease duration of 7 years; 91 patients had DAS28-remission, and 16, 23, and 9 patients had low, moderate and high disease activity, respectively. Controls scored better than did patients with (any) disease activity level; remission patients had similar DASH and key pinch function as did controls with poorer MHQ and both tip and palmar pinch and grip strength. DAS28 was consistently associated with impaired hand function. Among the patients with a one-year re-assessment, changes in DAS28 correlated (rho = 0.34 to 0.63) with changes in hand function (p ≤ 0.01 for all comparisons), but there was no correlation with palmar pinch strength. CONCLUSIONS: Disease activity was associated with hand function impairment in RA patients with variable follow-up. MHQ discriminated poorer hand function in remission patients who otherwise had similar DASH scores as the controls did.

BACKGROUND: Although P. jiroveci pneumonia affects immunocompromised (IC) patients of any etiology, clinical features and prognostic outcomes are different depending if they are patients with HIV infection or other causes of IC. OBJECTIVES: To compare clinical and laboratory features as well as outcomes of P. jiroveci pneumonia in HIV versus non-HIV patients. METHODS: Retrospective review of clinical records of HIV and non-HIV patients with P. jiroveci pneumonia managed at the Hospital Clínico Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile, between 2005 and 2007. RESULTS: We included 28 HIV and 45 non-HIV patients with confirmed P. jiroveci pneumonia. The non-HIV population was older (65 vs 36,2 years, p < 0,01), had shorter duration of symptoms (7 [1-21] vs 14 [2-45] days, p < 0,01), required more invasive techniques (60 vs 21%, p < 0,01) and RT-PCR to confirm the diagnosis (93 vs 68%, p < 0,01), were more frequently treated at intensive care units (58 vs. 25%, p < 0,01) requiring artificial ventilation (56 vs 11%, p < 0,01), and had a higher attributable mortality (33% vs 0%, p < 0,01). CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirmed that P. jiroveci pneumonia in non-HIV IC patients is more severe, more difficult to diagnose and has higher mortality that in HIV patients. Therefore, it is mandatory to optimize diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for this patients group.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated rapid changes in healthcare delivery in Guatemala's public primary care settings. A new hypertension program, implemented as part of a type 2 hybrid trial since 2019, exemplifies an implementation effort amidst a changing context in an under-resourced setting. We assessed the implementation of an evidence-based intervention (EBI; protocol-based hypertension treatment) and one of its main implementation strategies (team-based collaborative care), raising implications for health equity and sustainability. We present innovative application of systems thinking visuals. METHODS: Conducting a convergent mixed methods analysis, we assessed implementation in response to contextual changes across five Ministry of Health (MoH) districts at the pandemic's onset. Utilizing quantitative programmatic data and qualitative interviews with stakeholders (n=18; health providers, administrators, study staff), we evaluated dimensions of "Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance," RE-AIM (Reach, Implementation delivery + adaptations), and "Practical Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model," PRISM (Organizational perspective on the EBI, Fit, Implementation and sustainability infrastructure) frameworks. We assessed representativeness by comparing participants to census data. To assess implementation delivery, we built behavior-over-time (BOT) graphs with quantitative programmatic data (July 2019-July 2021). To assess adaptations and contextual changes, we performed matrix-based thematic qualitative analysis. We converged quantitative implementation delivery data + qualitative adaptations data in joint displays. Finally, we analyzed qualitative and quantitative results across RE-AIM/PRISM and health districts to identify equity and sustainability considerations. RESULTS: Contextual factors that facilitated program delivery included the perception that the EBI was beneficial, program champions, and staff communication. Key barriers to implementation delivery included competition with other primary care activities and limited implementation infrastructure (e.g., equipment, medications). Contextual changes related to COVID-19 hindered implementation delivery, threatened sustainability, and may have exacerbated inequities. However, adaptations that were planned enhanced implementation delivery and may have supported improved equity and sustainability. CONCLUSIONS: Recognition of an EBI's benefits and program champions are important for supporting initial uptake. The ability to plan adaptations amid rapid contextual changes has potential advantages for sustainability and equitable delivery. Systems thinking tools and mixed methods approaches may shed light on the relations between context, adaptations, and equitable and sustainable implementation. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03504124.

Sulfamethoxazole and metronidazole are emerging pollutants commonly found in surface water and wastewater. These compounds have a significant environmental impact, being necessary in the design of technologies for their removal. Recently, the advanced oxidation process has been proven successful in the elimination of this kind of compounds. In this sense, the present work discusses the application of UV/H2O2 and ozonation for the degradation of both molecules in single and binary systems. Experimental kinetic data from O3 and UV/H2O2 process were adequately described by a first and second kinetic model, respectively. From the ANOVA analysis, it was determined that the most statistically significant variables were the initial concentration of the drugs (0.03 mmol L-1) and the pH = 8 for UV/H2O2 system, and only the pH (optimal value of 6) was significant for degradation with O3. Results showed that both molecules were eliminated with high degradation efficiencies (88-94% for UV/H2O2 and 79-98% for O3) in short reaction times (around 30-90 min). The modeling was performed using a quadratic regression model through response surface methodology representing adequately 90 % of the experimental data. On the other hand, an artificial neural network was used to evaluate a non-linear multi-variable system, a 98% of fit between the model and experimental data was obtained. The identification of degradation byproducts was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a time mass detector. After each process, at least four to five stable byproducts were found in the treated water, reducing the mineralization percentage to 20% for both molecules.
