RESUMEN

A magnon is a collective excitation of the spin structure in a magnetic insulator and can transmit spin angular momentum with negligible dissipation. This quantum of a spin wave has always been manipulated through magnetic dipoles (that is, by breaking time-reversal symmetry). Here we report the experimental observation of chiral spin transport in multiferroic BiFeO3 and its control by reversing the ferroelectric polarization (that is, by breaking spatial inversion symmetry). The ferroelectrically controlled magnons show up to 18% modulation at room temperature. The spin torque that the magnons in BiFeO3 carry can be used to efficiently switch the magnetization of adjacent magnets, with a spin-torque efficiency comparable to the spin Hall effect in heavy metals. Utilizing such controllable magnon generation and transmission in BiFeO3, an all-oxide, energy-scalable logic is demonstrated composed of spin-orbit injection, detection and magnetoelectric control. Our observations open a new chapter of multiferroic magnons and pave another path towards low-dissipation nanoelectronics.

For energy-efficient magnetic memories, switching of perpendicular magnetization by spin-orbit torque (SOT) appears to be a promising solution. This SOT switching requires the assistance of an in-plane magnetic field to break the symmetry. Here, we demonstrate the field-free SOT switching of a perpendicularly magnetized thulium iron garnet (Tm3Fe5O12, TmIG). The polarity of the switching loops, clockwise or counterclockwise, is determined by the direction of the initial current pulses, in contrast with field-assisted switching where the polarity is controlled by the direction of the magnetic field. From Brillouin light scattering, we determined the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) induced by the Pt-TmIG interface. We will discuss the possible origins of field-free switching and the roles of the interfacial DMI and cubic magnetic anisotropy of TmIG. This discussion is substantiated by magnetotransport, Kerr microscopy, and micromagnetic simulations. Our observation of field-free electrical switching of a magnetic insulator is an important milestone for low-power spintronic devices.

A damping-like spin-orbit torque (SOT) is a prerequisite for ultralow-power spin logic devices. Here, we report on the damping-like SOT in just one monolayer of the conducting transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) TaS2 interfaced with a NiFe (Py) ferromagnetic layer. The charge-spin conversion efficiency is found to be 0.25 ± 0.03 in TaS2(0.88)/Py(7), and the spin Hall conductivity (14.9×105ℏ2eΩ-1m-1) is found to be superior to values reported for other TMDs. We also observed sizable field-like torque in this heterostructure. The origin of this large damping-like SOT can be found in the interfacial properties of the TaS2/Py heterostructure, and the experimental findings are complemented by the results from density functional theory calculations. It is envisioned that the interplay between interfacial spin-orbit coupling and crystal symmetry yielding large damping-like SOT. The dominance of damping-like torque demonstrated in our study provides a promising path for designing the next-generation conducting TMD-based low-powered quantum memory devices.

Chronic immunodeficiency virus infections are characterized by dysfunctional cellular and humoral antiviral immune responses. As such, immune modulatory therapies that enhance and/or restore the function of virus-specific immunity may protect from disease progression. Here we investigate the safety and immune restoration potential of blockade of the co-inhibitory receptor programmed death 1 (PD-1) during chronic simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection in macaques. We demonstrate that PD-1 blockade using an antibody to PD-1 is well tolerated and results in rapid expansion of virus-specific CD8 T cells with improved functional quality. This enhanced T-cell immunity was seen in the blood and also in the gut, a major reservoir of SIV infection. PD-1 blockade also resulted in proliferation of memory B cells and increases in SIV envelope-specific antibody. These improved immune responses were associated with significant reductions in plasma viral load and also prolonged the survival of SIV-infected macaques. Blockade was effective during the early (week 10) as well as late ( approximately week 90) phases of chronic infection even under conditions of severe lymphopenia. These results demonstrate enhancement of both cellular and humoral immune responses during a pathogenic immunodeficiency virus infection by blocking a single inhibitory pathway and identify a novel therapeutic approach for control of human immunodeficiency virus infections.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have drawn immense interest due to their strong spin-orbit coupling and unique layer number dependence in response to spin-valley coupling. This leads to the possibility of controlling the spin degree of freedom of the ferromagnet (FM) in thin film heterostructures and may prove to be of interest for next-generation spin-based devices. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the odd-even layer dependence of WS2 nanolayers by measurements of the ultrafast magnetization dynamics in WS2/Co3FeB thin film heterostructures by using time-resolved Kerr magnetometry. The fluence (photon energy per unit area) dependent magnetic damping (α) reveals the existence of broken symmetry and the dominance of inter- and intraband scattering for odd and even layers of WS2, respectively. The higher demagnetization time, τm, in 3 and 5 layers of WS2 is indicative of the interaction between spin-orbit and spin-valley coupling due to the broken symmetry. The lower τm in even layers as compared to the bare FM layer suggests the presence of a spin transport. By correlating τm and α, we pinpointed the dominant mechanisms of ultrafast demagnetization. The mechanism changes from spin transport to spin-flip scattering for even layers of WS2 with increasing fluence. A fundamental understanding of the two-dimensional material and its odd-even layer dependence at ultrashort timescales provides valuable information for designing next-generation spin-based devices.

Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is a multiferroic material that exhibits both ferroelectricity and canted antiferromagnetism at room temperature, making it a unique candidate in the development of electric-field controllable magnetic devices. The magnetic moments in BiFeO3 are arranged into a spin cycloid, resulting in unique magnetic properties which are tied to the ferroelectric order. Previous understanding of this coupling has relied on average, mesoscale measurements. Using nitrogen vacancy-based diamond magnetometry, we observe the magnetic spin cycloid structure of BiFeO3 in real space. This structure is magnetoelectrically coupled through symmetry to the ferroelectric polarization and this relationship is maintained through electric field switching. Through a combination of in-plane and out-of-plane electrical switching, coupled with ab initio studies, we have discovered that the epitaxy from the substrate imposes a magnetoelastic anisotropy on the spin cycloid, which establishes preferred cycloid propagation directions. The energy landscape of the cycloid is shaped by both the ferroelectric degree of freedom and strain-induced anisotropy, restricting the spin spiral propagation vector to changes to specific switching events.

Bismuth ferrite has garnered considerable attention as a promising candidate for magnetoelectric spin-orbit coupled logic-in-memory. As model systems, epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films have typically been deposited at relatively high temperatures (650-800 °C), higher than allowed for direct integration with silicon-CMOS platforms. Here, we circumvent this problem by growing lanthanum-substituted BiFeO3 at 450 °C (which is reasonably compatible with silicon-CMOS integration) on epitaxial BaPb0.75Bi0.25O3 electrodes. Notwithstanding the large lattice mismatch between the La-BiFeO3, BaPb0.75Bi0.25O3, and SrTiO3 (001) substrates, all the layers in the heterostructures are well ordered with a [001] texture. Polarization mapping using atomic resolution STEM imaging and vector mapping established the short-range polarization ordering in the low temperature grown La-BiFeO3. Current-voltage, pulsed-switching, fatigue, and retention measurements follow the characteristic behavior of high-temperature grown La-BiFeO3, where SrRuO3 typically serves as the metallic electrode. These results provide a possible route for realizing epitaxial multiferroics on complex-oxide buffer layers at low temperatures and opens the door for potential silicon-CMOS integration.

Stabilization of topological spin textures in layered magnets has the potential to drive the development of advanced low-dimensional spintronics devices. However, achieving reliable and flexible manipulation of the topological spin textures beyond skyrmion in a two-dimensional magnet system remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the introduction of magnetic iron atoms between the van der Waals gap of a layered magnet, Fe3GaTe2, to modify local anisotropic magnetic interactions. Consequently, we present direct observations of the order-disorder skyrmion lattices transition. In addition, non-trivial topological solitons, such as skyrmioniums and skyrmion bags, are realized at room temperature. Our work highlights the influence of random spin control of non-trivial topological spin textures.

Topological insulators (TIs) are the promising materials for next-generation technology due to their exotic features such as spin momentum locking, conducting surface states, etc. However, the high-quality growth of TIs by sputtering technique, which is one of the foremost industrial requirements, is extremely challenging. Also, the demonstration of simple investigation protocols to characterize topological properties of TIs using electron-transport methods is highly desirable. Here, we report the quantitative investigation of non-trivial parameters employing magnetotransport measurements on a prototypical highly textured Bi2Te3 TI thin film prepared by sputtering. Through the systematic analyses of the temperature and magnetic field dependent resistivity, all topological parameters associated with TIs, such as coherency factor (α), Berry phase (Φ_B), mass term (m), the dephasing parameter (p), slope of temperature dependent conductivity correction (κ) and the surface state penetration depth (λ) are estimated by using the modified 'Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka', 'Lu-Shen' and 'Altshuler-Aronov' models. The obtained values of topological parameters are well comparable to those reported on molecular beam epitaxy grown TIs. The epitaxial growth of Bi2Te3 film using sputtering, and investigation of the non-trivial topological states from its electron-transport behaviour are important for their fundamental understanding and technological applications.

Spin pumping has been considered a powerful tool to manipulate the spin current in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic (FM/NM) system, where the NM part exhibits large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In this work, the spin pumping in ß-W/Interlayer (IL)/Co2FeAl (CFA) heterostructures grown on Si(100) is systematically investigated with different ILs in which SOC strength ranges from weak to strong. We first measure the spin pumping through the enhancement of effective damping in CFA by varying the thickness of ß-W. The damping enhancement in the bilayer of ß-W/CFA (without IL) is found to be ∼50% larger than the Gilbert damping in a single CFA layer with a spin diffusion length and spin mixing conductance of 2.12 ± 0.27 nm and 13.17 ± 0.34 nm-2, respectively. Further, the ILs of different SOC strengths such as Al, Mg, Mo, and Ta were inserted at the ß-W/CFA interface to probe their impact on damping in ß-W/ILs/CFA. The effective damping reduced to 8% and 20% for Al and Mg, respectively, whereas it increased to 66% and 75% with ILs of Mo and Ta, respectively, compared to the ß-W/CFA heterostructure. Thus, in the presence of ILs with weak SOC, the spin pumping at the ß-W/CFA interface is suppressed, while for the high SOC ILs effective damping increased significantly from its original value of ß-W/CFA bilayer using a thin IL. This is further confirmed by performing inverse spin Hall effect measurements. In summary, the transfer of spin angular momentum can be significantly enhanced by choosing a proper ultrathin interface layer. Our study provides a tool to increase the spin current production by inserting an appropriate thin interlayer which is useful in modifying the heterostructure for efficient performance in spintronics devices.

We demonstrate that tungsten disulphide (WS2) with thicknesses ranging from monolayer (ML) to several monolayers can be grown on SiO2/Si, Si, and Al2O3 by pulsed direct current-sputtering. The presence of high quality monolayer and multilayered WS2 on the substrates is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy since the peak separations between the A1g-E2g and A1g-2LA vibration modes exhibit a gradual increase depending on the number of layers. X-ray diffraction confirms a textured (001) growth of WS2 films. The surface roughness measured with atomic force microscopy is between 1.5 and 3 Å for the ML films. The chemical composition WSx (x = 2.03 ± 0.05) was determined from X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy was performed on a multilayer film to show the 2D layered structure. A unique method for growing 2D layers directly by sputtering opens up the way for designing 2D materials and batch production of high-uniformity and high-quality (stochiometric, large grain sizes, flatness) WS2 films, which will advance their practical applications in various fields.

Background: Skin is the largest organ of the human body, and one of the most sensitive indicators of a child's general health. Skin disorders, especially among children, may cause an additional emotional and psychological stress to the patients and their family. Aim: We aim to compare the extent to which various skin diseases affect the quality of life among the pediatric age group (5-12 years) based on Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) scores. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of 453 patients who attended skin clinic at a regional hospital in Northern India between November 2015 and May 2017. The study consists of questions regarding dermatoses. Patients were evaluated using a standardized pro forma and a CDLQI questionnaire. The diseases with abnormal high proportions were evaluated by the control chart technique. Results: Out of a total of 453 pediatric patients identified for dermatoses, the average quality of life based on the CDLQI score did not show significant variation across different seasons (P < 0.522). Although the type of skin disorders (P < 0.001) had a significant effect on the quality of life of the children. Based on the CDLQI scores, following diseases have a significant adverse effect on quality of life of the patients - miliaria, atopic dermatitis, scabies, impetigo, and pediculosis capitis. Conclusion: Our study has shown that skin diseases, irrespective of the type, adversely impair the quality of life of the child and in turn the family, therefore, calls for an enhanced level of compassion and care.

The study aims to characterize mutations of the HBV genome involving BCP, Precore/core and X regions and also defines HBV genotypes in patients of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The study involved 150 HBV-related HCC cases and 136 HBV-related chronic liver disease patients without HCC as controls. HBV DNA was subjected to mutational analysis using SSCP technique, genotyping by RFLP, and direct nucleotide sequencing. HBV DNA was found in 58.7% (88/150) of the HCC cases and 74.3% (101/136) of controls. HBV mutants were observed in 44.3% of HCC cases and 43.2% of controls. HBV/D was prevalent amongst the patients and controls, followed by HBV/A. The prevalence of the TT1504 mutation in the X gene, the V1753 and T1762/A1764 mutations in the BCP region, and G1914 mutation in the core gene were significantly higher in the HCC group than in the non-HCC group. Multivariate analyses showed that the TT1504, V1753, A1762T/G1764A, and the G1914 mutations and the patient's age, sex, and HBeAg status increased the risk of HCC development significantly. Also, patients with HCC had lower levels of serum albumin, viral load, and platelet counts but higher values of alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, bilirubin, and Alpha feto-protein than those of controls (P < 0.001 for all comparisons). HBV/D was the predominant genotype associated with HCC cases seen in India. The presence of different types of HBV mutations, age, sex, HBeAg status, and viral load was found to increase significantly the risk of HCC development in India.

HIV-1 displays extensive genetic diversity globally which poses challenge in designing a suitable antigen/immunogen to provoke desired protective immune response in host. HIV-1 mediated pathogenesis is complex and involves host genes, virus genes and other factors. A number of genetic subtypes have been identified based on sequence variations, largely in envelope region. Different genetic subtypes display variation in amino acid sequences with increasing incidence of subtype B, C, D and mosaic recombinants in India. They can potentially alter the functions of several proteins like Rev, Tat ,Vpr, Vif etc and thereby, influence HIV-1 mediated pathogenesis. Recent study has shown that LTR promoter region exhibits novel mosaic structures with segments from B/C Myanmar and India. This indicates rapid evolving nature of HIV-1 and causing epidemics due to existence of multiple subtypes in Indian region. These multiple subtypes show significant differences in various functions (gene activation, cell cycle arrest, RNA binding activities) compared to prototype subtype B genes. These differences may help in better understanding of unique features of HIV-1 epidemic in India.

BACKGROUND: Majority of the cosmetics are synthetic in nature and capable of causing dermatitis among frequent users. Some cosmetics (bindi, sindoor, etc.) that cause serious skin inflammation are specific to Indian culture. AIM: To study the prevalence of contact dermatitis due to various cosmetics indigenous among Indian users. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 2,150 patients who attended dermatitis clinic at a regional hospital in north India. A total of 400 of these were suspected of cosmetic dermatitis based on clinical grounds and were subjected to patch test using Indian Standard Series and Cosmetic series kit. RESULTS: Among the 400 patients identified for cosmetic dermatitis, 352 (88%) were female and 326 (81.5%) between 20 and 49 years of age. Bindi/kumkum (30%), hair dye (18%), and deodorant/perfume (14%) were primary cosmetics causing contact dermatitis. Patch test with the suspected cosmetics was positive in 52.75% cases. Patients who visited their doctor in the early stages of appearance of symptoms (<3 months) were more likely to have positive patch test. CONCLUSION: Higher incidence of cosmetic dermatitis is observed in adult females aggravated by use of inferior quality cosmetics. Early detection of the disease can be helpful.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin-textures having immense potential for energy efficient spintronic devices. Here, we report the observation of stable skyrmions in unpatterned Ta/Co2FeAl(CFA)/MgO thin film heterostructures at room temperature in remnant state employing magnetic force microscopy. It is shown that these skyrmions consisting of ultrathin ferromagnetic CFA Heusler alloy result from strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (i-DMI) as evidenced by Brillouin light scattering measurements, in agreement with the results of micromagnetic simulations. We also emphasize on room temperature observation of multiple skyrmions which can be stabilized for suitable combinations of CFA layer thickness, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and i-DMI. These results provide a significant step towards designing of room temperature spintronic devices based on skyrmions in full Heusler alloy based thin films.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve trunk involvement in leprosy is very common. However, by the time it becomes clinically manifest, the damage is quite advanced. If the preclinical nerve damage can be detected early, the deformities and disabilities can be prevented to a large extent. AIMS: To assess the electrophysiological functions of the ulnar and median nerve trunks in cases of clinically manifest leprosy with and without manifest nerve damage at different durations of nerve damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electrophysiological functions of ulnar and median nerves were studied in leprosy patients, both normal and at different stages of disease and damage. PB cases, having disease for six months or less, without neurological symptoms and clinically normal appearing nerve. STATISTICAL METHODS: Mean was taken of different values. The changes in values of different parameters were expressed as percentage change with reference to the control values (increase or decrease). RESULTS: Reduced nerve conduction velocities and changes in latency and amplitude were observed. Changes in sensory nerve conduction were more pronounced. Sensory latencies and amplitude changes were more severe than motor latencies and amplitudes in cases with manifest muscle palsies. Changes in MB cases were less marked. CONCLUSIONS: Further studies are needed to identify parameters likely to be helpful in the diagnosis of early nerve damage.

BACKGROUND: While prednisolone is commonly used to treat recent nerve function impairment (NFI) in leprosy patients, the optimal treatment duration has not yet been established. In this "Treatment of Early Neuropathy in Leprosy" (TENLEP) trial, we evaluated whether a 32-week prednisolone course is more effective than a 20-week course in restoring and improving nerve function. METHODS: In this multi-centre, triple-blind, randomized controlled trial, leprosy patients who had recently developed clinical NFI (<6 months) were allocated to a prednisolone treatment regimen of either 20 weeks or 32 weeks. Prednisolone was started at either 45 or 60 mg/day, depending on the patient's body weight, and was then tapered. Throughout follow up, NFI was assessed by voluntary muscle testing and monofilament testing. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with improved or restored nerve function at week 78. As secondary outcomes, we analysed improvements between baseline and week 78 on the Reaction Severity Scale, the SALSA Scale and the Participation Scale. Serious Adverse Events and the need for additional prednisolone treatment were monitored and reported. RESULTS: We included 868 patients in the study, 429 in the 20-week arm and 439 in the 32-week arm. At 78 weeks, the proportion of patients with improved or restored nerve function did not differ significantly between the groups: 78.1% in the 20-week arm and 77.5% in the 32-week arm (p = 0.821). Nor were there any differences in secondary outcomes, except for a significant higher proportion of Serious Adverse Events in the longer treatment arm. CONCLUSION: In our study, a 20-week course of prednisolone was as effective as a 32-week course in improving and restoring recent clinical NFI in leprosy patients. Twenty weeks is therefore the preferred initial treatment duration for leprosy neuropathy, after which likely only a minority of patients require further individualized treatment.

The influence of growth temperature Ts (300-773 K) on the structural phase ordering, static and dynamic magnetization behaviour has been investigated in ion beam sputtered full Heusler alloy Co2FeAl (CFA) thin films on industrially important Si(100) substrate. The B2 type magnetic ordering is established in these films based on the clear observation of the (200) diffraction peak. These ion beam sputtered CFA films possess very small surface roughness of the order of subatomic dimensions (<3 Å) as determined from the fitting of XRR spectra and also by AFM imaging. This is supported by the occurrence of distinct Kiessig fringes spanning over the whole scanning range (~4°) in the x-ray reflectivity (XRR) spectra. The Gilbert damping constant α and effective magnetization 4πMeff are found to vary from 0.0053 ± 0.0002 to 0.0015 ± 0.0001 and 13.45 ± 00.03 kG to 14.03 ± 0.04 kG, respectively. These Co2FeAl films possess saturation magnetization ranging from 4.82 ± 0.09 to 5.22 ± 0.10 µB/f.u. consistent with the bulk L21-type ordering. A record low α-value of 0.0015 is obtained for Co2FeAl films deposited on Si substrate at Ts ~ 573 K.

Electrophysiological functions of ulnar and median nerves in paucibacillary leprosy patients were studied. Patients who showed deterioration of sensory motor functions in spite of steroid therapy were offered nerve decompression together with oral steroids. On periodic follow-up of those who opted for surgery, it was observed, in general, that NCV and amplitude remained reduced even though clinical recovery occurred. Only 80% recovery of electrophysiological functions was seen (as compared to control levels), even in cases that showed good results. Motor function recovered better than sensory function. Complete electrophysiological recovery, if it occurs at all, takes much longer than clinical recovery.
