RESUMEN

An ultrasharp photoluminescence line intimately related to antiferromagnetic order has been found in NiPS_{3}, a correlated van der Waals material, opening prospects for magneto-optical coupling schemes and spintronic applications. Here we unambiguously clarify the singlet origin of this excitation, confirming its roots in the spin structure. Based on a comprehensive investigation of the electronic structure using angle-resolved photoemission and q-dependent electron energy loss spectroscopy as experimental tools we develop, in a first step, an adequate theoretical understanding using density functional theory (DFT). In a second step the DFT is used as input for a dedicated multiplet theory by which we achieve excellent agreement with available multiplet spectroscopy. Our Letter connects the understanding of the electronic structure and of optical processes in NiPS_{3} and related materials as a prerequisite for further progress of the field.

RESUMEN

Motivated by recent experiments on volborthite single crystals showing a wide 1/3-magnetization plateau, we perform microscopic modeling by means of density functional theory (DFT) with the single-crystal structural data as a starting point. Using DFT+U, we find four leading magnetic exchanges: antiferromagnetic J and J_{2}, as well as ferromagnetic J^{'} and J_{1}. Simulations of the derived spin Hamiltonian show good agreement with the experimental low-field magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization data. The 1/3-plateau phase pertains to polarized magnetic trimers formed by strong J bonds. An effective J→∞ model shows a tendency towards condensation of magnon bound states preceding the plateau phase.

RESUMEN

New germanides with composition RE3Pt4Ge13 (RE = Y, Pr, Sm, Gd, Tb, Tm) have been prepared by high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis. Their crystal structures have been refined, and the relationship of this new rhombohedral and monoclinic structure types with the primitive cubic Yb3Rh4Sn13 prototype is discussed. Band structure calculations within density functional theory confirm the distorted rhombohedral and monoclinic structural arrangements to be energetically more favorable than the simple cubic one. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the RE-atoms are in the +3 oxidation state in all studied compounds.

RESUMEN

The first compound in the cobalt bismuth system was synthesized by high-pressure high-temperature synthesis at 5 GPa and 450 °C. CoBi3 crystallizes in space group Pnma (no. 62) with lattice parameters of a = 8.8464(7) Å, b = 4.0697(4) Å and c = 11.5604(9) Å adopting a NiBi3-type crystal structure. CoBi3 undergoes a superconducting transition at Tc = 0.48(3) K as evidenced by electrical-resistivity and specific-heat measurements. Based on the anomaly of the specific heat at Tc and considering the estimated electron-phonon coupling, the new Bi-rich compound can be classified as a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type superconductor with weak electron-phonon coupling. Density-functional theory calculations disclose a sizable influence of the spin-orbit coupling to the valence states and proximity to a magnetic instability, which accounts for a significantly enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient.

A number of neurotoxin- and gene-based rodent models of acute neurodegeneration of nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) neurons are used to study Parkinson's disease (PD). The rapid degeneration achieved by many of these current models limits the capacity of the model to develop pathogenic mechanisms and display the various stages of motor degradation representative of the human Parkinsonian condition. Chronic rodent models have been the only ones to reproduce these characteristics, yet do not show correlated progress of DA loss with multiple stepwise behavioral deficits as seen in humans. In the present study, we have developed a progressive model of increasing DA loss and motor dysfunction via progressively increased administration of the neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), in the C57Bl/6J mouse. Mice were administered a daily (5 d/wk) dose of MPTP that increased weekly over the course of 4 weeks (4 mg/kg, 8 mg/kg, 16 mg/kg and 32 mg/kg). Each treatment group was tested for exploratory and motor behavioral changes after every week leading up to their final dose, as well as changes in tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity (TH-ir) of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and caudate putamen (CPu). We detected a 24% decrease in the mean number of TH-ir SNpc neurons/section after 1 week, and a 62% decrease after 4 weeks as compared to the vehicle group. CPu TH-ir began at a 35% loss after 1 week and increased to a 74% loss after 4 weeks compared to the vehicle group. CPu DA content showed an initial decrease of 20% after 1 week, and a final decrease of 70% following week 4 versus the vehicle group. Free-standing rears (versus wall-assisted rears, in a cylinder), decreased from 35% to 8% of total rears as the dose of MPTP increased from 4 mg/kg to 32 mg/kg, respectively. However, motor impairment as measured by a Parallel Rod Activity Chamber test was not significant until week 4 at 32 mg/kg compared to the vehicle group. The present study is the first to show stepwise progression of behavioral deficits which correlate with gradual dopaminergic decline in the nigrostriatal pathway. This progressive lesioning regiment may be appropriate for future investigation of pathogenic mechanisms and various intervention therapies in PD.

RESUMEN

The recently discovered natural minerals Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2 and Cu3Mg(OH)6Cl2 are spin 1/2 systems with an ideal kagome geometry. Based on electronic structure calculations, we develop a realistic model which includes couplings across the kagome hexagons beyond the original kagome model that are intrinsic in real kagome materials. Exact diagonalization studies for the derived model reveal a strong impact of these couplings on the magnetic ground state. Our predictions could be compared to and supplied with neutron scattering, thermodynamic data, and NMR data.

RESUMEN

In the search for data supporting the hypothesis that the luteolytic effect of prostaglandins (PG) is initiated by a vascular mechanism, some haemodynamic parameters including ovarian blood flow and vascular resistance were measured in pseudopregnant anaesthetized rabbits before and after exogenous administration of PGF2a. The measurements were performed on days 5-10 of pseudopregnancy induced by 500 IU HCG iv.
