RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the usefulness of ultrasound (US) for the localization of ectopic hyperparathyroidism and compare it with 99mTc-sestamibi (99mTc-MIBI), 4-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT), and 11C-choline positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (PET/CT). METHODS: Of the 527 patients with surgically confirmed primary hyperparathyroidism, 79 patients with ectopic hyperparathyroidism were enrolled. The diagnostic performance of US, 99mTc-MIBI, US + MIBI, 4D-CT, and 11C-choline PET/CT was calculated, and the factors affecting the sensitivity of US and 99mTc-MIBI were analyzed. RESULTS: Eighty-three ectopic parathyroid lesions were found in 79 patients. The sensitivity was 75.9%, 81.7%, 95.1%, 83.3%, and 100% for US, 99mTc-MIBI, US + MIBI, 4D-CT, and 11C-choline PET/CT, respectively. The difference in sensitivity among these different modalities did not achieve statistical significance (P > .05). The US sensitivity was significantly higher for ectopic lesions in the neck region than for those in the anterior mediastinum/chest wall (85.9% vs. 42.1%, P < .001). The 99mTc-MIBI and 4D-CT sensitivity was not significantly different between these two groups (84.1% vs. 94.6%, P = .193 and 81.3% vs. 85.7%, P = 1). The 11C-choline PET/CT sensitivity was 100% in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: US is a valuable tool for the localization of ectopic hyperparathyroidism, especially for ectopic lesions in the neck region.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation between lesion location and swallowing function characteristics in post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 133 PSD. The patients were divided into supratentorial and infratentorial stroke groups. We compared the measurements in the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) with 3ml and 5 ml of diluted and thickened barium liquid data between supratentorial and brainstem stroke groups. We further compared the difference of VFSS measurements between patients with left hemispheric or right hemispheric lesions (further divided into unilateral hemispheric cortical and subcortical subgroups) and brianstem leison stroke group. To explore the lesion location's effect on different bolus volume, the VFSS measurements of 3ml and 5ml in each subgroups were compared respectively. The measurements of VFSS included the oral transit time, soft palate elevation duration, hyoid bone movement duration (HMD), UES opening duration, pharyngeal transit duration (PTD), stage of ansition duration, and laryngeal closure duration (LCD), the upper esophageal sphincter opening (UESO), hyoid bone superior horizontal displacement, and hyoid bone anterior horizontal displacement. General swallowing function was assessed using the Penetration Aspiration Scale (PAS) and Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS). We performed the paired t-test, Spearman's correlation, and Kruskal-Wallis test analysis to characterize the parameters among the groups. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients were assessed in the final analysis. The HMD (p = 0.019), PTD (p = 0.048) and LCD (p = 0.013) were significantly different between the supratentorial and brainstem lesion groups in 5ml volume. The HMD was significantly different (p = 0.045) between the left cortical and brainstem lesion groups. Significant differences in the HMD (p = 0.037) and LCD (p = 0.032) between the left subcortical and brainstem lesion groups were found in 5ml volume bolus. There was no group different when taking the 3ml volume bolus. Regarding the relationship between food bolus volume and swallowing functions, only the UESO demonstrated a significant difference in the subcortical lesion of the right hemisphere (p = 0.0032) compared the 3 ml and 5 ml volume bolus. The PTD demonstrated a moderate correlation with the PAS scores (r = 0.38, p = 0.0044). The HMD (r = 0.32, p = 0.018) and LCD (r = 0.29, p = 0.039) demonstrated weak correlations with the PAS scores. We did not identify any correlation between the VFSS parameters and FOIS scores in each subgroup level. CONCLUSION: The PSD with brainstem lesion shows more sever dysfunction in the pharyngeal phases. The left hemisphere was engaged in both the oral and pharyngeal phases. Lesions in the bilateral cortical, subcortical, and brainstem regions may impair sensory input.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The most common toxic side effect after chemotherapy, one of the main treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC), is myelosuppression. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the correlation between gut microbiota and leukopenia after chemotherapy in CRC patients. METHODS: Stool samples were collected from 56 healthy individuals and 55 CRC patients. According to the leukocytes levels in peripheral blood, the CRC patients were divided into hypoleukocytes group (n = 13) and normal leukocytes group (n = 42). Shannon index, Simpson index, Ace index, Chao index and Coverage index were used to analyze the diversity of gut microbiota. LDA and Student's t-test(St test) were used for analysis of differences. Six machine learning algorithms, including logistic regression (LR) algorithm, random forest (RF) algorithm, neural network (NN) algorithm, support vector machine (SVM) algorithm, catboost algorithm and gradient boosting tree algorithm, were used to construct the prediction model of gut microbiota with leukopenia after chemotherapy for CRC. RESULTS: Compared with healthy group, the microbiota alpha diversity of CRC patients was significantly decreased (p < 0.05). After analyzing the gut microbiota differences of the two groups, 15 differential bacteria, such as Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium and Streptococcus, were screened. RF prediction model had the highest accuracy, and the gut microbiota with the highest predictive value were Peptostreptococcus, Faecalibacterium, and norank_f__Ruminococcaceae, respectively. Compared with normal leukocytes group, the microbiota alpha diversity of hypoleukocytes group was significantly decreased (p < 0.05). The proportion of Escherichia-Shigella was significantly decreased in the hypoleukocytes group. After analyzing the gut microbiota differences of the two groups, 9 differential bacteria, such as Escherichia-Shigella, Fusicatenibacter and Cetobacterium, were screened. RF prediction model had the highest accuracy, and the gut microbiota with the highest predictive value were Fusicatenibacte, Cetobacterium, and Paraeggerthella. CONCLUSION: Gut microbiota is related to leukopenia after chemotherapy. The gut microbiota may provide a novel method for predicting myelosuppression after chemotherapy in CRC patients.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To explore the diagnostic performance of EFSUMB CEUS Pancreatic Applications guidelines (version 2017) before and after the addition of iso-enhancement and very fast/fast washout as supplementary diagnostic criteria for PDAC. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients diagnosed with solid pancreatic lesions from January 2017 to December 2020 were evaluated. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is reported to show hypo-enhancement in all phases according to the EFSUMB guidelines. First, based on this definition, all lesions were categorized as PDAC and non-PDAC. Then, iso-enhancement and very fast/fast washout were added as supplementary diagnostic criteria, and all lesions were recategorized. The diagnostic performance was assessed in terms of the accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV). The reference standard consisted of histologic evaluation or composite imaging and clinical follow-up findings. RESULTS: A total of 455 nodules in 450 patients (median age, 58.37 years; 250 men) were included. The diagnostic performance using the EFSUMB CEUS guidelines for PDAC had an ACC of 69.5%, SEN of 65.4%, SPE of 84%, PPV of 93.5%, NPV of 40.6%, and ROC of 0.747. After recategorization according to the supplementary diagnostic criteria, the diagnostic performance for PDAC had an ACC of 95.8%, SEN of 99.2%, SPE of 84%, PPV of 95.7%, NPV of 96.6%, and ROC of 0.916. CONCLUSION: The EFSUMB guidelines and recommendations for pancreatic lesions can effectively identify PDAC via hypo-enhancement on CEUS. However, the diagnostic performance may be further improved by the reclassification of PDAC lesions after adding iso-enhancement and very fast/fast washout mode. KEY POINTS: • In the EFSUMB guidelines, the only diagnostic criterion for PDAC is hypo-enhancement, to which iso-enhancement and very fast/fast washout mode were added in our research. • Using hypo-enhancement/iso-enhancement with very fast/fast washout patterns as the diagnostic criteria for PDAC for solid pancreatic masses on CEUS has high diagnostic accuracy. • The blood supply pattern of PDAC can provide important information, and CEUS has unique advantages in this respect due to its real-time dynamic attenuation ability.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Autophagy is believed to participate in embryonic development, but whether the expression of autophagy-associated genes undergoes changes during the development of human embryonic kidneys remains unknown. METHODS: In this work, we identified 36,151 human renal cells from embryonic kidneys of 9-18 gestational weeks in 16 major clusters by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), and detected 1350 autophagy-related genes in all fetal renal cells. The abundance of each cell cluster in Wilms tumor samples from scRNA-seq and GDC TARGET WT datasets was detected by CIBERSORTx. R package Monocle 3 was used to determine differentiation trajectories. Cyclone tool of R package scran was applied to calculate the cell cycle scores. R package SCENIC was used to investigate the transcriptional regulons. The FindMarkers tool from Seurat was used to calculate DEGs. GSVA was used to perform gene set enrichment analyses. CellphoneDB was utilized to analyze intercellular communication. RESULTS: It was found that cells in the 13th gestational week showed the lowest transcriptional level in each cluster in all stages. Nephron progenitors could be divided into four subgroups with diverse levels of autophagy corresponding to different SIX2 expressions. SSBpod (podocyte precursors) could differentiate into four types of podocytes (Pod), and autophagy-related regulation was involved in this process. Pseudotime analysis showed that interstitial progenitor cells (IPCs) potentially possessed two primitive directions of differentiation to interstitial cells with different expressions of autophagy. It was found that NPCs, pretubular aggregates and interstitial cell clusters had high abundance in Wilms tumor as compared with para-tumor samples with active intercellular communication. CONCLUSIONS: All these findings suggest that autophagy may be involved in the development and cellular heterogeneity of early human fetal kidneys. In addition, part of Wilms tumor cancer cells possess the characteristics of some fetal renal cell clusters.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: There is still no clinical evidence available to support or to oppose corticosteroid treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of corticosteroid given to the hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. METHODS: This was a prospective, multicenter, single-blind, randomized control trial. Adult patients with COVID-19 pneumonia who were admitted to the general ward were randomly assigned to either receive methylprednisolone or not for 7 days. The primary end point was the incidence of clinical deterioration 14 days after randomization. RESULTS: We terminated this trial early because the number of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in all the centers decreased in late March. Finally, a total of 86 COVID-19 patients underwent randomization. There was no difference of the incidence of clinical deterioration between the methylprednisolone group and control group (4.8 vs. 4.8%, p = 1.000). The duration of throat viral RNA detectability in the methylprednisolone group was 11 days (interquartile range, 6-16 days), which was significantly longer than that in the control group (8 days [2-12 days], p = 0.030). There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in other secondary outcomes. Mass cytometry discovered CD3+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, and NK cells in the methylprednisolone group which were significantly lower than those in the control group after randomization (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: From this prematurely closed trial, we found that the short-term early use of corticosteroid could suppress the immune cells, which may prolong severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 shedding in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) is a global health concern that has become a pandemic over the past few months. This study aims at understanding the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 patients with pleural effusion. METHODS: COVID-19 patients were retrospectively enrolled from the Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Pharyngeal swabs from patients were tested using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Patients with COVID-19 were divided into two groups based on their computed tomography (CT) scans for the presence of pleural effusion at admission. We compared the clinical features, laboratory findings, scans and clinical outcomes between the two groups. RESULTS: Pleural effusion was observed in 9.19% of the patients. Patients with pleural effusion were more likely to be severe or critical cases. Moreover, patients with pleural effusion were associated with increased mortality. Of the 799 discharged patients, patients with pleural effusion had longer hospital stays and duration of viral shedding since the onset of symptoms as compared with that for patients without pleural effusion. After discharge, 217 patients visited for a follow-up CT re-examination at the Union Hospital. The CT scans showed that patients with pleural effusion required a longer time to resolve the lung inflammation after the onset of COVID-19 as compared with the time required by patients without pleural effusion. CONCLUSION: This population of patients requires special attention and pleural effusion may be an indicator of poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We compared clinical, laboratory, radiological, and outcome features of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) with pneumonia, with vs without diarrhea. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, single-center analysis of 84 patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia in Wuhan Union Hospital, China, from January 19 through February 7, 2020. Cases were confirmed by real-time reverse-transcriptase PCR of nasal and pharyngeal swab specimens for SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Blood samples were analyzed for white blood cell count, lymphocyte count, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, D-dimer, C-reactive protein, and in some cases, immunoglobulins, complement, lymphocyte subsets, and cytokines. Virus RNA was detected in stool samples by real-time PCR. RESULTS: Of the 84 patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, 26 (31%) had diarrhea. The duration of fever and dyspnea in patients with diarrhea was significantly longer than those without diarrhea (all P < .05). Stool samples from a higher proportion of patients with diarrhea tested positive for virus RNA (69%) than from patients without diarrhea (17%) (P < .001). As of February 19, a lower proportion of patients with diarrhea had a negative result from the latest throat swab for SARS-CoV-2 (77%) than patients without diarrhea (97%) (P = .010), during these patients' hospitalization. Of 76 patients with a negative result from their latest throat swab test during hospitalization, a significantly higher proportion of patients with diarrhea had a positive result from the retest for SARS-CoV-2 in stool (45%) than patients without diarrhea (20%) (P = .039). CONCLUSIONS: At a single center in Wuhan, China, 31% of patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia had diarrhea. A significantly higher proportion of patients with diarrhea have virus RNA in stool than patients without diarrhea. Elimination of SARS-CoV-2 from stool takes longer than elimination from the nose and throat.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Accurate differentiating diagnosis is essential for choosing treatment for exudative pleural effusions. OBJECTIVE: To establish the diagnostic accuracy of interleukin 27 for tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE). METHODS: First, the concentrations of pleural interleukin 27, interferon-gamma and adenosine deaminase were compared between 51 patients with TPE and 103 with non-TPEs (Beijing cohort), and their diagnostic values were evaluated. These were further verified in another independent population (Wuhan cohort, n=120). In the second part of the study, we performed a meta-analysis. RESULTS: With a cut-off value of 591.4 ng/L in the Beijing cohort, the area under the curve, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of interleukin 27 to diagnose TPE were 0.983 (95% CI 0.947 to 0.997), 96.1% (86.5% to 99.5%), 99.0% (94.7% to 100%), 98.0 (89.4 to 99.9) and 98.1 (93.3 to 99.8), respectively. Excellent diagnostic accuracy of interleukin 27 was also found in the Wuhan cohort and was further confirmed in the meta-analysis. The diagnostic performance of interleukin 27 was comparable to that of interferon-gamma and was more accurate than that of adenosine deaminase. Since the post-test probability of a negative result was always <0.1%, a negative test was considered to exclude TPE in all tuberculosis prevalence settings. CONCLUSIONS: Interleukin 27 can be used to diagnose TPE in a high prevalence setting, and a negative result can also be reliably used to rule out TPE in all prevalence settings.

RESUMEN

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive lung disease that typically leads to respiratory failure and death within 3-5 years of diagnosis. Sub-pleural pulmonary fibrosis is a pathological hallmark of IPF. Bleomycin treatment of mice is a an established pulmonary fibrosis model. We recently showed that bleomycin-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes to pleural mesothelial cell (PMC) migration and sub-pleural pulmonary fibrosis. MicroRNA (miRNA) expression has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of IPF. However, changes in miRNA expression in PMCs and sub-pleural fibrosis have not been reported. Using cultured PMCs and a pulmonary fibrosis animal model, we found that miR-18a-5p was reduced in PMCs treated with bleomycin and that downregulation of miR-18a-5p contributed to EMT of PMCs. Furthermore, we determined that miR-18a-5p binds to the 3' UTR region of transforming growth factor ß receptor II (TGF-ßRII) mRNA, and this is associated with reduced TGF-ßRII expression and suppression of TGF-ß-Smad2/3 signaling. Overexpression of miR-18a-5p prevented bleomycin-induced EMT of PMC and inhibited bleomycin-induced sub-pleural fibrosis in mice. Taken together, our data indicate that downregulated miR-18a-5p mediates sub-pleural pulmonary fibrosis through upregulation of its target, TGF-ßRII, and that overexpression of miR-18a-5p might therefore provide a novel approach to the treatment of IPF.

RESUMEN

Mosquito adults usually need to ingest sugar from nectar host plants to sustain their metabolic needs. Mosquitoes could be differentially attracted by various flowering plant species, and the volatiles were thought to be important factors attributed to the differential attractiveness. However, whether mosquitoes' preference for host plants correlates with their nutritional rewards from sugar sources remains unclear. In the present study, the preference of newly emerged Culex pipiens pallens to three kinds of flowering plants (Ligustrum quihoui, Abelia chinensis, and Nerium indicum) was determined in the olfactometer. Besides, when the newly emerged mosquitoes were provided with these flowering plants as sugar sources, the content of their metabolic reserves (glycogen, lipid, and protein) was determined. The results revealed that Cx. pipiens pallens could be differentially attracted by the odors emitted by the inflorescences of the tested flowering plants, and the nutritional rewards of mosquitoes were significantly affected by feeding on different inflorescences. The present study demonstrated that feeding on nectar host plants with differential attraction could affect the energy reserves of Cx. pipiens pallens.

RESUMEN

Objective To investigate the role of 17-MHz high-frequency linear array probe in detecting the microcalcification of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and its pathological basis. Methods The clinical data of 75 patients with PTC diagnosed by ultrasonography and pathology in China-Japan Friendship Hospital from January 2016 to January 2017 were analyzed. The detection rate of microcalcification was compared between 17-MHz high-frequency ultrasound and conventional ultrasound, and the imaging findings and pathological Results were analyzed. Results Among 93 thyroid nodules, the detection rate of PTC microcalcification by 17-MHz ultrasound was 74.2% (69/93),which was significantly higher than that of conventional ultrasound (59.1%,55/93) (χ2=4.742,P=0.029). The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the conventional ultrasound and the 17-MHz ultrasound were 73.6% and 98.1%,60.0% and 57.5%,67.7% and 80.6%,70.9% and 75.4%,and 63.1% and 95.8%,respectively. Pathology confirmed the presence of microcalcification at 53 nodules, among which psammoma bodies were found in 10 nodules;in addition, all the psammoma bodies were located in the cell mass, whereas irregular calcium deposits were mainly in proliferated fibrous tissues. Conclusion sThe 17-MHz high-frequency ultrasound can increase the detection rate of microcalcification in thyroid nodules. The ultrasonic manifestations of microcalcification do not completely correspond to the psammoma bodies found in pathology;rather, they may represent the irregular calcium deposits on fibrous tissues.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether Superb Micro-Vascular Imaging (SMI; Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation, Tochigi, Japan) is superior to power Doppler flow imaging (PDFI) in depicting thyroid nodular vascularity and to primarily explore the diagnostic performance of vascularity on SMI integrated with grayscale sonographic features for diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules. METHODS: Ninety-two resident patients with 113 nodules for surgery were included in the study. Thirty-four nodules were benign, and 79 nodules were malignant. Vascularity was classified as none, peripheral, mixed, and intranodular. Grayscale features, including calcifications, echogenicity, margins, shape, and internal components, were evaluated. The distribution of vascular patterns was compared between PDFI and SMI to determine the superior technique for diagnosing malignancy. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the accuracy of SMI combined with grayscale sonography for thyroid malignancy. RESULTS: The 92 patients had a male-to-female ratio of 12:11 and a median age of 42 years (range, 20-75 years). Intranodular vascularity on SMI had 91.2% specificity and 75.9% sensitivity, which were superior to PDFI, at 82.3% and 41.8%, respectively (P < .01). We attribute this finding to the fact that peripheral vessels of many nodules on PDFI were actually intense small penetrating vessels around the lesion on SMI. A taller-than-wide shape, microcalcifications, and SMI intranodular vascularity were independent risk factors for thyroid malignancy. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the logistic regression model was 0.92, which was higher than that for a single suspicious sonographic feature (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Intranodular vascularity on SMI is useful for determining thyroid carcinoma. Furthermore, a combination of SMI and grayscale features performs better than any single sonographic feature alone.

RESUMEN

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive lung disease characterized by the development of subpleural foci of myofibroblasts that contribute to the exuberant fibrosis. Recent studies revealed that pleural mesothelial cells (PMCs) undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and play a pivotal role in IPF. In animal model, bleomycin induces pulmonary fibrosis exhibiting subpleural fibrosis similar to what is seen in human IPF. It is not known yet whether bleomycin induces EMT in PMCs. In the present study, PMCs were cultured and treated with bleomycin. The protein levels of collagen-I, mesenchymal phenotypic markers (vimentin and α-smooth muscle actin), and epithelial phenotypic markers (cytokeratin-8 and E-cadherin) were measured by Western blot. PMC migration was evaluated using wound-healing assay of culture PMCs in vitro, and in vivo by monitoring the localization of PMC marker, calretinin, in the lung sections of bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis. The results showed that bleomycin induced increases in collagen-I synthesis in PMC. Bleomycin induced significant increases in mesenchymal phenotypic markers and decreases in epithelial phenotypic markers in PMC, and promoted PMC migration in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, TGF-ß1-Smad2/3 signaling pathway involved in the EMT of PMC was demonstrated. Taken together, our results indicate that bleomycin induces characteristic changes of EMT in PMC and the latter contributes to subpleural fibrosis.

RESUMEN

Hainan, the largest tropical island in China, belongs to the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. The Changhua watershed is a center of endemism for plants and birds and the cradle of Hainan's main rivers. However, this area has experienced recent and ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation. To quantify habitat loss and fragmentation of natural forests, as well as the land-cover changes in the Changhua watershed, we analyzed Landsat images obtained in 1988, 1995, and 2005. Land-cover dynamics analysis showed that natural forests increased in area (97,909 to 104,023 ha) from 1988 to 1995 but decreased rapidly to 76,306 ha over the next decade. Rubber plantations increased steadily throughout the study period while pulp plantations rapidly expanded after 1995. Similar patterns of land cover change were observed in protected areas, indicating a lack of enforcement. Natural forests conversion to rubber and pulp plantations has a general negative effect on biodiversity, primarily through habitat fragmentation. The fragmentation analysis showed that natural forests area was reduced and patch number increased, while patch size and connectivity decreased. These land-cover changes threatened local biodiversity, especially island endemic species. Both natural forests losses and fragmentation should be stopped by strict enforcement to prevent further damage. Preserving the remaining natural forests and enforcing the status of protected areas should be a management priority to maximize the watershed's biodiversity conservation value.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and summarize the ultrasonographic features of PMP by comparing with computed tomography (CT) findings. METHOD: Ultrasound and CT scan results of 25 patients with PMP confirmed by pathology after surgery were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Among these 25 PMP patients, three were diagnosed by ultrasound and six by CT(P=0.579). The specific ultrasonographic features of PMP were as follows:the dense punctuate echoes or floccules were detected in hydrops abdominis, which seldom or never move with the change of body position. Honeycomb-like lesions were typical. Notches were formed on the surface of liver or spleen due to the mucinous material and/or the mucinous lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Both ultrasound and CT scan have poor detection rate in the diagnosis of PMP. PMP has specific ultrasonographic features, which may make it possible to diagnose most PMP lesions by ultrasound before surgery

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the sonographic features of struma ovarii and its corresponding histopathologic findings. METHODS: The sonographic and histopathological features of 72 patients with histopathologically comfirmed struma ovarii who were treated in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2005 to December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Of these 72 patients,71 had benign struma ovarii(73 lesions)and one patient had malignant struma ovarii(1 lesion). On ultrasonography, all the 73 benign lesions had distinct margin,45(61.6%)had multilocular cystic or cystic-solid mass,49(67.1%)had irregular shape, and 28(38.4%)had nodular solid protrusions in the cystic areas. On the color Doppler flow imaging,36(49.3%)lesions had blood flow signals. The ultrasonographic features of the malignant struma ovarii lesion were multilocular cystic-solid mass with several nodular solid protrusions in the cysic areas;on the color Doppler flow imaging, blood flow signals were visible within septa and solid areas. CONCLUSIONS: The sonographic features of struma ovarii are diverse. If ultrasonography reveals multilocular cystic or cystic-solid mass with distinct margin and isoechoic or hyperechoic nodular solid protrusions in the cystic areas with visible blood flow signals, the diagnosis of struma ovarii should be considered.
