RESUMEN

Since printed capacitive sensors provide better sensing performance, they can be used in automotive bezel applications. It is necessary to fabricate such sensors and apply an optimization approach for choosing the optimal sensor pattern. In the present work, an effort was made to formulate interdigitated pattern-printed Silver (Ag) electrode flexible sensors and adopt the Taguchi Grey Relational (TGR)-based optimization approach to enhance the flexible sensor's panel for enhanced automobile infotainment applications. The optimization technique was performed to derive better design considerations and analyze the influence of the sensor's parameters on change in capacitance when touched and production cost. The fabricated flexible printed sensors can provide better sensing properties. A design pattern which integrates an overlap of 15 mm, an electrode line width of 0.8 mm, and an electrode gap 0.8 mm can produce a higher change in capacitance and achieve a lower weight. The overlap has a greater influence on sensor performance owing to its optimization of spatial interpolation.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a non-conventional machining technique, capable of processing any kind of conductive material. Recently, it has been successfully utilized for producing hydrophobic characteristics in inherently hydrophilic metallic materials. In this work, Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) was utilized for producing hydrophobic characteristics on the surface of the aluminum alloy 6082, and various parameters that can affect wettability were investigated. Adopting an orthogonal Taguchi approach, the effects of the process parameter values of peak current, pulse-on time, and gap voltage on the contact angles of the machined surfaces were investigated. After machining, all samples were observed to have obtained hydrophobic properties, reaching contact angles up to 132°. The peak current was identified as the most influential parameter regarding the contact angle, while the gap voltage was the less influential parameter. A contact angle variation of 30° was observed throughout different combinations of machining parameters. Each combination of the machining parameters resulted in a distinct surface morphology. The samples with moderate roughness values (3.4 µm > Sa > 5.7 µm) were found to be more hydrophobic than the samples with high or low values, where the contact angle was measured under 115°. In addition, the finite element modeling of the experimental setup, with parametric surfaces of uniform random and Perlin noise types of roughness, was implemented. Time dependent simulations coupling phase field and laminar flow for the modelingof the wetting of surfaces with different surface roughness characteristics showed that an increase in the Sa roughness and total wetted area can lead to an increase in the contact angle. The combination of experimental and computational results suggests that the complexity of the wettability outcomes of aluminum alloy surfaces processed with WEDM lies in the interplay between variations of the surface chemical composition, roughness, micro/nano morphology, and the surface capability of forming a composite air/water interface.

Non-conventional machining processes offer significant advantages over conventional ones, especially in terms of the productivity, cost, and surface integrity of the produced parts due to their higher flexibility. Abrasive waterjet machining, in particular, constitutes an ecologically friendly process with a negligible thermal impact on a workpiece, and it has considerable capabilities for obtaining the desired outcome by regulating some of its numerous parameters. Among these parameters, the abrasive type is particularly important due to its hardness, mesh size, and shape, which lead to considerable deviations on the obtained depth, kerf characteristics, and productivity. Thus, in this work, a comprehensive comparison is conducted on the use of garnet and silicon carbide particles for the slot milling of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy under different conditions. The capabilities of both abrasive materials are evaluated by statistical analysis regarding the depth of penetration, kerf width, kerf taper angle, and material removal rate (MRR), which are obtained under the same process conditions. Finally, a multi-objective optimization based on grey relational analysis (GRA) is performed for several different practical cases. It was found that, although silicon carbide is more efficient in optimizing individual process outputs, the use of a garnet abrasive can lead to considerably better trade-offs between two or more objectives of the machining process.

Electric discharge machining (EDM) is one of the non-conventional machining processes that supports machining for high-strength and wear-resistant materials. It is a challenging task to select the process parameters in real-time to maximize the material removal rate since real-time process trials are expensive and the EDM process is stochastic. For the ease of finding process parameters, a modelling of the EDM process is proposed. Due to the non-linear relationship between the material removal rate (MRR) and discharge time, a model-free adaptive extremum-seeking controller (ESC) is proposed in the feedback path of the EDM process for finding an optimal value of the discharge time at which the maximum material removal rate can be achieved. The results of the model show a performance that is closer to the actual process by choosing steel workpieces and copper electrodes. The proposed model offers a lower error rate when compared with actual experimental process data. When compared to manual searching for an optimal point, extreme seeking online searching performed better as per the experimental results. It was observed that the experimental validation also proved that the ESC can produce a large MRR by tracking the extremum control. The present study has been limited to only the MRR, but it is also possible to implement such algorithms for more than one response parameter optimization in future studies. In such cases the performance measures of the process could be further enhanced, which could be used for a real-time complex die- and mold-making process using EDM.

The spread of bacteria through contaminated surfaces is a major issue in healthcare, food industry, and other economic sectors. The widespread use of antibiotics is not a sustainable solution in the long term due to the development of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, surfaces with antibacterial properties have the potential to be a disruptive approach to combat microbial contamination. Different methods and approaches have been studied to impart or enhance antibacterial properties on surfaces. The surface roughness and texture are inherent parameters that significantly impact the antibacterial properties of a surface. They are also directly related to the previously employed machining and treatment methods. This review article discusses the correlation between surface roughness and antibacterial properties is presented and discussed. It begins with an introduction to the concepts of surface roughness and texture, followed by a description of the most commonly utilized machining methods and surface. A thorough analysis of bacterial adhesion and growth is then presented. Finally, the most recent studies in this research area are comprehensively reviewed. The studies are sorted and classified based on the utilized machining and treatment methods, which are divided into mechanical processes, surface treatments and coatings. Through the systematic review and record of the recent advances, the authors aim to assist and promote further research in this very promising and extremely important direction, by providing a systematic review of recent advances.

As a non-conventional machining technology, EDM is used extensively in modern industry, particularly in machining difficult-to-cut materials. CALMAX is a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium tool steel with exceptional toughness, ductility, and wear resistance that has a wide range of applications. Despite the fact that EDM is routinely used in CALMAX machining, the related published research is brief and limited. The current research gives a complete experimental study of CALMAX machining using EDM. A Taguchi Design of Experiment (DOE) was used, using pulse-on current, pulse-on time, and open-circuit voltage as control parameters. Material Removal Rate (MRR), Tool Material Removal Rate (TMRR), and Tool Wear Ratio (TWR) were used to evaluate machining performance, while Ra and Rz were used to estimate Surface Quality (SQ). The produced White Layer (WL) parameters were determined using optical and SEM microscopy, as well as EDX measurements and micro-hardness studies. Finally, for each of the aforementioned indexes, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed, and multi-objective optimization was based on Grey Relational Analysis (GRA). The results show that higher open-circuit voltage produces lower WL thickness, although by increasing the pulse-on time, the TWR is increased. The average hardness of the WL is increased about 400% compared to the micro-hardness of the bulk material.

Electrochemical micromachining (EMM) is a plausible method for manufacturing high accuracy and precision microscale components in a broad range of materials. EMM is commonly utilized to manufacture turbine blades for automobiles and aircrafts. In this present study, the EMM process was performed with a heat-treated copper tool electrode on aluminum 8011 alloy. The process parameters such as voltage, concentration of electrolyte, frequency, and duty factor were varied to analyze the effect of a heat-treated electrode on material removal rate (MRR), overcut, conicity, and circularity. It was observed that high MRR was obtained with lower overcut with an annealed electrode. The better conicity and circularity were obtained with a quenched electrode compared to other heat-treated and untreated tool electrodes. The artificial bee's colony (ABC) algorithm was used to identify the optimum parameters and, finally, the confirmation test was carried out to evaluate the error difference on the machining process. The optimum combination of input process parameters found using TOPSIS and ABC algorithm for the EMM process are voltage (14 V), electrolyte concentration (30 g/L), frequency (60 Hz), and duty cycle (33%) for the annealed tool electrode and voltage (14 V), electrolyte concentration (20 g/L), frequency (70 Hz), and duty cycle (33%) for the quenched tool electrode. It was confirmed that 95% of accurate response values were proven under the optimum parameter combination.

The leather materials are used in a multitude of sectors, including footwear, apparel, handicrafts, and the automotive industry. Due to the radiant heat generated by a laser beam, the laser cutting of leather results in a carbonized cut edge. There is currently no technology available for measuring the carbonization along the contour edges of leather. The purpose of this experimental investigation was to determine the impact of power diode-based laser cutting on the carbonization of machined buffalo leather with the help of a digital microscope to improve the machining process. The ATR-FTIR spectrum was used to analyze the carbon-related functional group in the mid-IR spectrum of carbonized leather samples. It was found that the proposed method can measure the amount of carbon deposition in the cutting zone. The lower amplitude duty cycle with higher feed rate can reduce carbon formation owing to the lower thermal energy distribution. The amplitude (4.5 V), duty cycle (70%) and feed rate (90 mm/s) can produce optimal performance measures.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) consists of a non-conventional machining process, which is widely used in modern industry, and especially in machining hard-to-cut materials. By employing EDM, complex shapes and geometries can be produced, with high dimensional accuracy. Titanium alloys, due to their unique inherent properties, are extensively utilized in high end applications. Nevertheless, they suffer from poor machinability, and thus, EDM is commonly employed for their machining. The current study presents an experimental investigation regarding the process of Ti-6Al-4V ELI with high power EDM, using a graphite electrode. Control parameters were the pulse-on current (Ip) and time (Ton), while Machining performances were estimated in terms of Material Removal Rate (MRR), Tool Material Removal Rate (TMRR), and Tool Wear Ratio (TWR). The machined Surface Roughness was calculated according to the Ra and the Rt values, by following the ISO 25178-2 standards. Furthermore, the EDMed surfaces were observed under optical and SEM microscopy, while their cross sections were also studied in order the Average White Layer Thickness (AWLT) and the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) to be measured. Finally, for the aforementioned indexes, Analysis Of Variance was performed, whilst for the MRR and TMRR, based on the Response Surface Method (RSM), semi-empirical correlations were presented. The scope of the current paper is, through a series of experiments and by employing statistical tools, to present how two main machining parameters, i.e., pulse-on current and time, affect major machining performance indexes and the surface roughness.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a non-traditional cutting technology that is extensively utilized in contemporary industry, particularly for machining difficult-to-cut materials. EDM may be used to create complicated forms and geometries with great dimensional precision. Titanium alloys are widely used in high-end applications owing to their unique intrinsic characteristics. Nonetheless, they have low machinability. The current paper includes an experimental examination of EDM's Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Extra Low Interstitials through controlled interstitial element levels) process utilizing a graphite electrode. The pulse-on current (IP) and pulse-on time (Ton) were used as control parameters, and machining performance was measured in terms of Material Removal Rate (MRR), Tool Material Removal Rate (TMRR), and Tool Wear Ratio (TWR). The Surface Roughness (SR) was estimated based on the mean roughness (SRa) and maximum peak to valley height (SRz), while, the EDMed surfaces were also examined using optical and SEM microscopy and cross-sections to determine the Average White Layer Thickness (AWLT). Finally, for the indices above, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted, whilst semi-empirical correlations for the MRR and TMRR were given using the Response Surface Method (RSM). The results show that the pulse-on time is the most significant parameter of the machining process that may increase the MRR up to 354%. Pulse-on current and pulse-on time are shown to have an impact on the surface integrity of the finished product. Furthermore, statistics, SEM, and EDX images on material removal efficiency and tool wear rate are offered to support the core causes of surface and sub-surface damage. The average microhardness of the White Layer (WL) is 1786 HV.

Titanium alloys, due to their unique properties, are utilized in numerous modern high-end applications. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a non-conventional machining process, commonly used in machining of hard-to-cut materials. The current paper, presents an experimental study regarding the machining of Titanium Grade2 with EDM, coupled with the development of a simulation model. The machining performance indexes of Material Removal Rate, Tool Wear Ratio, and Average White Layer Thickness were measured and calculated for different pulse-on currents and pulse-on times. Moreover, the developed model that integrates a heat transfer analysis with deformed geometry, allows to estimate the power distribution between the electrode and the workpiece, as well as the Plasma Flushing Efficiency, giving an insight view of the process. Finally, by employing the Response Surface Methodology, educed regression models that correlate the machining parameters with the corresponding results, while for all the aforementioned indexes, ANOVA was performed.

The present research focuses on the investigation of an in situ hydrogen charging effect during Crack Tip Opening Displacement testing (CTOD) on the fracture toughness properties of X65 pipeline steel. This grade of steel belongs to the broader category of High Strength Low Alloy Steels (HSLA), and its microstructure consists of equiaxed ferritic and bainitic grains with a low volume fraction of degenerated pearlite islands. The studied X65 steel specimens were extracted from pipes with 19.15 mm wall thickness. The fracture toughness parameters were determined after imposing the fatigue pre-cracked specimens on air, on a specific electrolytic cell under a slow strain rate bending loading (according to ASTM G147-98, BS7448, and ISO12135 standards). Concerning the results of this study, in the first phase the hydrogen cations' penetration depth, the diffusion coefficient of molecular and atomic hydrogen, and the surficial density of blisters were determined. Next, the characteristic parameters related to fracture toughness (such as J, KQ, CTODel, CTODpl) were calculated by the aid of the Force-Crack Mouth Open Displacement curves and the relevant analytical equations.
