RESUMEN

Two cocci-shaped, facultatively anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria isolated from the faeces of a pig were designated as strains YH-aer221T and YH-aer222. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolates were most closely related to Aerococcus suis JCM 18035T with 96.6 % similarity. The multi-locus sequence tree revealed that the isolates formed a sub-cluster adjacent to A. suis JCM 18035T. The average nucleotide identity values for the isolates and their most closely related strains were 71.8 and 71.7 %, respectively; and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization values for the isolates and their most closely related strains were 25.6 and 25.5 %, respectively. The main fatty acids were C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C18 : 0. The cell wall contained the meso-diaminopimelic acid-based peptidoglycan. The two isolates shared the same metabolic pathways. Isolates YH-aer221T and YH-aer222 harboured the same CRISPR array with 33 and 46 spacers, respectively. Single-genome vs. metagenome analysis showed that the genomes of the isolates were not found in the available metagenome database. Given their chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and phylogenetic properties, YH-aer221T (= KCTC 25571T=JCM 35699T) and YH-aer222 (=KCTC 25573=JCM 35700) represent a novel taxon. The name Aerococcus kribbianus sp. nov. is proposed.

Two rod-shaped, obligate anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive bacteria isolated from the pig faeces were designated YH-ols2216 and YH-ols2217T. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that these isolates were most related to the members of the family Atopobiaceae, within the order Coriobacteriales, and Granulimonas faecalis KCTC 25474T with 92.0 and 92.5% similarities, respectively. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity within isolates was 99.9 %; and those between isolates YH-ols2216 and YH-ols2217T, and Atopobium minutum DSM 20586T, the type species of the type genus Atopobium within the family Atopobiaceae, were 88.5 and 88.7 %, respectively. Those between isolates and Coriobacterium glomerans PW2T, the type species of the type genus Coriobacterium within the family Coriobacteriaceae, were 88.7 and 89.1 %, respectively. The multi-locus sequence tree revealed that the isolates, alongside the genera Granulimonas and Leptogranulimonas, formed a distinct cluster between the families Atopobiaceae and Coriobacteriaceae. The average nucleotide identities and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values for the isolates and their most closely related strains ranged from 67.7 to 76.2 % and from 18.4 to 23.3 %, respectively. The main cellular fatty acids of the isolates were C18 : 0 DMA, C18 : 1 ω9c, C18 : 0 12OH, C18 : 0, and C16 : 0. The cell wall contained the peptidoglycan meso-diaminopimelic acid. Lactate was the main end-product of the isolates. The major polar lipids of isolate YH-ols2217T were aminophospholipid, aminolipids, and lipids. Menaquinones were not identified in the cells of the isolates. The DNA G+C contents of isolates YH-ols2216 and YH-ols2217T were 67.5 and 67.6 mol%, respectively. Considering these chemotaxonomic, phenotypic, and phylogenetic properties, Kribbibacteriaceae fam. nov. is proposed within the order Coriobacteriales. YH-ols2216 (=KCTC 25708=NBRC 116429) and YH-ols2217T (=KCTC 25709T=NBRC 116430T) represent a novel taxon within this new family and the name Kribbibacterium absianum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. In addition, the genera Granulimonas and Leptogranulimonas are transferred to the family Kribbibacteriaceae fam. nov.

PURPOSE: To investigate if increased tubular damage biomarker can predict pathologically upstaged renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which may possess sub-radiologic invasive behavior, leading to surrounding tubular damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 1563 patients with surgically resected RCC between March 2016 and June 2021 from the prospective database SUPER-RCC-Nx. Exclusion criteria were cancer not originating from the kidneys, benign renal tumor, and end-stage renal disease. RESULTS: Of 1297 patients, 131 had a clinically high T stage (T3-4), whereas 1166 had a low one. Patients with a clinically low T stage were subgrouped into identical-stage (n = 1041) and upstaged (n = 125) groups, who were confirmed as a pathologically high T stage. The upstaged group had older age (p = 0.003), larger tumor size (5.72 ± 3.24 vs. 3.12 ± 2.08, p < 0.001), higher Fuhrman grade (grades 3-4) (57.3% vs. 47.1%, p = 0.032), and higher urine N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase/creatinine (NAG/Cr) (5.13 ± 4.78 vs. 4.05 ± 2.84, p = 0.026). Tumor size (> 4 cm; odds ratio = 10.2, p < 0.001) and urine NAG/Cr (odds ratio = 1.16, p = 0.003) were independently associated with pathological upstaging in patients with normal renal function, while age and tumor size were significant risk factors in those with decreased renal function. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the model using tumor size and urine NAG/Cr strongly predicted pathological upstaging (area under the curve, 0.84). CONCLUSION: Urine NAG/Cr may be a useful biomarker predicting pathologically upstaged RCC. Clinicians should be prudent in making management decisions when a large RCC is accompanied by an increased urine NAG/Cr.

RESUMEN

A rod-shaped, aerotolerant, Gram-stain-positive bacterium isolated from pig faeces was designated as strain YH-lim2214T. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the isolate was most closely related to Limosilactobacillus pontis KCTC 25258T with 98.0 % similarity. The average nucleotide identity and average amino acid identity values between YH-lim2214T and the most closely related strain Lm. pontis KCTC 25258T were 81.4 and 81.3 %, respectively. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω9c, summed feature 7 and C16 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan type was A4α l-Lys-d-Asp. The genomic DNA G+C content was 51.1 mol%. The chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and phylogenetic properties of YH-lim2214T (=KCTC 25572T=JCM 35701T) suggest that it represents a novel taxon, for which the name Limosilactobacillus kribbianus sp. nov. is proposed.

A lactic acid bacterium isolated from pig faeces was characterized using a polyphasic approach. The strain was Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, and facultative anaerobic. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Lacticaseibacillus. The multi-locus sequence tree revealed that the strain formed a sub-cluster adjacent to Lacticaseibacillus kribbianus. The main fatty acids were C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω9c. The average nucleotide identity value, average amino acid identity, and genome-to-genome distance for YH-lacS6T and its most closely related strain, L. kribbianus, were 85.4, 85.2 and 29.2 %, respectively. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 61.6 mol%. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, aminophospholipids and phospholipids. The cell-wall peptidoglycan did not contain meso-diaminopimelic acid. Thus, YH-lacS6T (=KCTC 21186T=JCM 34954T) represents a novel species. The name Lacticaseibacillus parakribbianus sp. nov. is proposed.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell papillary renal cell tumor (CCPRCT) was first reported in 2006 a patient with end stage renal disease. After that it was discovered in the kidney without end stage renal disease in the 2010s and started to be mentioned in pathology and urology. The incidence of CCPRCT is low and most of it is discovered incidentally, so there is a lack of reports on clinical characteristics and surgical outcome. METHODS: This study used clinical data from the Seoul National University Prospectively Enrolled Registry for Renal Cell Carcinoma-Nephrectomy (SUPER-RCC-Nx). Between August 2016 and July 2022, patients who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy with clear cell papillary RCC with pathological finding were included in this study. All patients' pathologic reports were reviewed by 1 pathologist. Clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes were presented through descriptive statistics, and Kaplan-Meier curve used for survival analysis. RESULTS: Of the 2057 patients, CCPRCT was reported in 36 patients (1.8%). The median follow up period was 26.8 months. The median age was 67 years, and there were 10 females and 26 males. The median tumor size was 1.2 cm. Twenty-nine patients underwent partial nephrectomy. Seven patients with end-stage renal disease underwent radical nephrectomy. The median operative time for patients who underwent partial nephrectomy was 97.5 min and the estimated blood loss was 100 cc. The median hospital days was 4 and 30-day complications were 2 cases with clavien-dindo classification III or higher. During the follow-up period, there was no recurrence and cancer specific mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The size of CCPRCT was small and there was no advanced stage at that time of diagnosis. There was no recurrence or cancer specific mortality during the follow-up period. A multi-center study with a large scale is needed in the future. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of anaerobic blood culture in pediatric patients by comparing the detection rate and distribution of bacteria between aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 11,664 blood cultures obtained from children under the age of 14 between January 2013 and June 2020. The positive rate of total, aerobic, and anaerobic blood culture, as well as the species distribution of each blood culture bottle, were investigated. RESULTS: The positive rate of blood culture was 2.4 % (N = 281). Among them, 67 (23.8 %), 85 (30.3 %) and 129 (45.9 %) organisms were grown in only aerobic, only anaerobic, and both blood culture bottles, respectively. Gram-positive cocci were cultured on both, only aerobic, and only anaerobic blood culture bottles in proportions of 46.4 %, 23.4 %, and 30.2 %, respectively. Gram-negative bacilli were cultured on both, only aerobic, and only anaerobic blood culture bottles in proportions of 58.5 %, 12,3 %, and 29.2 %, respectively. Gram-positive bacilli grew best in aerobic bottle only. There were seven strains of obligate anaerobes. CONCLUSION: Because many facultative anaerobic bacteria are recognized primarily from anaerobic blood culture bottles, combining aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles might be beneficial in pediatric patients with suspected blood stream infection.

OBJECTIVE: The genus Hallella was described within Bacteroidaceae, and then reclassified within Prevotellaceae based on its phenotypic and phylogenetic description. It is associated with degradation of carbohydrate. However, some species of Hallella have pathobiotic properties, and are involved in infections and chronic inflammatory disorders. METHODS: Here, we used a polyphasic taxonomic approach to characterize the two strains: YH-C38T and YH-C4B9b. A detailed metabolic analysis was conducted to compare the two novel isolates with related strains within the genus Hallella. RESULT: Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolates were most closely related to Hallella mizrahii JCM 34422T with 98.5% and 98.6% similarities, respectively. Analysis of the multi-locus species tree based on whole genome sequences of the isolates and related strains revealed that the isolates formed a sub-cluster adjacent to H. mizrahii JCM 34422T. The average nucleotide identity values for YH-C38T and YH-C4B9b, and the most closely related strain H. mizrahii JCM 34422T, were 93.5% and 93.8%, respectively. The main fatty acids were iso C17:0 3OH and anteiso C15:0. The predominant menaquinones were MK-12, MK-11, and MK-13. The cell wall contained the peptidoglycan of meso-diaminopimelic acid. Analysis of comparative metabolic analysis revealed that isolates YH-C38T and YH-C4B9b each contained 155 carbohydrate-active enzymes, and glycoside hydrolase was the largest family. CONCLUSION: Two rod-shaped, obligately anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative bacteria, isolated from pig feces, were designated as strains YH-C38T and YH-C4B9b. Based on the chemotaxonomic, phenotypic, and phylogenetic properties, YH-C38T (=KCTC 25103T = JCM 35423T) and YH-C4B9b (=KCTC 25104 = JCM 35609) represent a novel taxon. The name Hallella absiana sp. nov. is proposed.

OBJECTIVE: The family Lachnospiraceae is affiliated with the order Clostridiales and was originally contained within Clostridial cluster XIVa. The members of Lachnospiraceae inhabiting the gut comprise the chemoorganotrophic genera, generating sundry short-chain fatty acids to supply energy to the host, and are considered to be related to obesity and gut health. METHODS: The polyphasic taxonomic approach was used to characterize the isolate YH-rum2234T. A detailed metabolic analysis was conducted to compare the novel isolate with related strains within the family Lachnospiraceae. RESULTS: A fusiform, obligately anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative bacterium, YH-rum2234T, was isolated from pig feces. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the similarities between the isolate and the familiarly interrelated strain Lientehia hominis KCTC 25345T was 94.3%. The average nucleotide identities and genome-to-genome distances of YH-rum2234T and its closely related strains were below 85.5% and 32.5%, respectively. The G + C content of the genomic DNA was 49.2 mol%. The main fatty acids were C16:0, C14:0, and C14:0 DMA. The major polar lipids were aminophospholipids. The cell wall did not contain the peptidoglycan meso-diaminopimelic acid. CONCLUSION: Given the chemotaxonomic, phenotypic, and phylogenetic properties, YH-rum2234T (=KCTC 25710T = DSMZ 116041T) represents a new genus and species in the family Lachnospiraceae. Fusibacillus kribbianus gen. nov., sp. nov. is the proposed name.

A lactic acid bacteria isolated from pig faeces was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Cells of the strain were Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped and facultative anaerobic. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Lacticaseibacillus; however, the similarity to other homologues within the genus was <98 %. Analysis of housekeeping gene sequences (pheS and recA) revealed that the strain formed a sub-cluster adjacent to Lacticaseibacillus absianus and Lacticaseibacillus daqingensis. The main fatty acids of the strain is the C18 : 1ω9c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 62.8 mol %. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, aminophospholipids and phospholipids. The cell-wall peptidoglycan did not contain meso-diaminopimelic acid. Thus, YH-lac21T (=KCTC 21185=JCM 34953) represents a novel species. The name Lacticaseibacillus kribbianus sp. nov. is proposed.

BACKGROUND: A rapid and reliable screening test for urinary tract infection (UTI) is needed to reduce the turn-around time and to rule out negative results of urine culture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of BACT count and BACT-Info flag of the UF-5000 for screening for UTI. METHODS: A total of 1,063 urine specimens from April to September 2019 were included in this study. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of white blood cell (WBC) count, BACT count, BACT-Info flag, and UTI flag in UF-5000 by comparing with the urine culture results. RESULTS: Of the urine specimens, 16.7% were culture-positive (≥ 105 CFU/mL) with 15 being yeast positive. A BACT count of > 685.3/µL showed the best diagnostic performance with 93.8% sensitivity and 90.2% specificity. We confirmed that the combination of BACT count (685.3/µL) and BACT-Info flag would be appropriate to use in a clinical laboratory (sensitivity 91.5%, specificity 90.5%). Based on this combination, the sensitivity and specificity of the Gram-negative flag were 95.5% and 94.8%. CONCLUSIONS: We recommend the use of a combination of BACT count (685.3/µL) and BACT-Info for UTI diagnosis. This combination is more appropriate for Gram-negative bacteria, and it would be useful for selecting empirical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Serology testing is useful to determine the past infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). METHODS: We evaluated the comparative performance of a newly developed neutralizing antibody test (R-FIND SARS-CoV-2 Neutralizing Antibody ELISA, SG Medical, Seoul, Korea) and a rapid fluorescence immunoassay (FREND™ COVID-19 SP, NanoEntek, Hwaseong, Korea) for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody. They were compared with cPass™ SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization Antibody Detection Kit (Genscript Biotech, Piscataway, NJ, USA) and ADVIA Centaur SARS-CoV-2 Total (COV2T) (Siemens Healthineers, Erlangen, Germany). Forty COVID-19 samples and 80 negative samples were collected after nucleic acid tests. RESULTS: The positive percent agreement (%) of the kit in samples from 6 - 7 days, 8 - 14 days, and 15 - 45 days after symptom onset were as follows: R-FIND (83.3, 76.9, 95.2), cPass (83.3, 69.2, 90.5), FREND (66.6, 84.6, 100), and COV2T (66.6, 69.2, 76.2). The negative percent agreement (%) was 100, 97.5, 92.5, and 100 for R-FIND, cPass, FREND, and COV2T. The total agreement rate between the neutralizing antibody kits (R-FIND and cPass) was 96.7%. FREND showed high agreement with two neutralizing antibody kits (96.7% for R-FIND and 93.3% for cPass). CONCLUSIONS: R-FIND Neutralizing Antibody and FREND COVID-19 SP showed comparable detecting ability to commercial tests.

RESUMEN

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and adults (MIS-C/A) was rarely reported as a complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and potential adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination. Recently, the case definition of MIS-C/A was developed by the Brighton Collaboration Network. However, only a limited number of adult patients with MIS-A following immunization have been reported, and there is still little evidence for adequate treatment. A 57-year-old man presented with fever, headache, vomiting, and hypotension 24 days after receiving the second COVID-19 vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. According to the Brighton Collaboration Case Definition, the patient met a definitive case of MIS-A after vaccination (level 1 of diagnostic certainty). After administration of medium-dose prednisolone (20 mg/d) with colchicine (1.2 mg/d), all symptoms and signs improved rapidly. The dose of prednisolone was gradually tapered from the third week, and the patient confirmed a full recovery without medication after 8 weeks. This is the first report showing that low-dose steroids in combination with colchicine may be an effective treatment option for MIS-A after vaccination.

The present study was performed to investigate the validity of a wireless earbud-type inertial measurement unit (Ear-IMU) sensor used to estimate head angle during four workouts. In addition, relationships between head angle obtained from the Ear-IMU sensor and the angles of other joints determined with a 3D motion analysis system were investigated. The study population consisted of 20 active volunteers. The Ear-IMU sensor measured the head angle, while a 3D motion analysis system simultaneously measured the angles of the head, trunk, pelvis, hips, and knees during workouts. Comparison with the head angle measured using the 3D motion analysis system indicated that the validity of the Ear-IMU sensor was very strong or moderate in the sagittal and frontal planes. In addition, the trunk angle in the frontal plane showed a fair correlation with the head angle determined with the Ear-IMU sensor during a single-leg squat, reverse lunge, and standing hip abduction; the correlation was poor in the sagittal plane. Our results indicated that the Ear-IMU sensor can be used to directly estimate head motion and indirectly estimate trunk motion.

RESUMEN

The explosive outbreak of COVID-19 led to a shortage of medical resources, including isolation rooms in hospitals, healthcare workers (HCWs) and personal protective equipment. Here, we constructed a new model, non-contact community treatment centres to monitor and quarantine asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic COVID-19 patients who recorded their own vital signs using a smartphone application. This new model in Korea is useful to overcome shortages of medical resources and to minimise the risk of infection transmission to HCWs.

BACKGROUND: Several approaches for urethral catheterization after the failure of initial urethral catheterization have been introduced. However, standard procedures regarding what should be done after failed conventional urethral catheterization have been not established. Therefore, we investigated the clinical efficacy of retrograde urethrography (RGU)-assisted urethral catheterization after failed conventional urethral catheterization. METHODS: Between July 2015 and July 2018, 136 patients who underwent RGU-assisted urethral catheterization after failed conventional urethral catheterization were included in this retrospective study. Patients' clinical data, such as age, catheterization site, and previous history of urologic operations, were collected and assessed via chart review. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify predictive factors for the failure of this procedure. RESULTS: Of the 136 patients, 94 (69.1%) experienced successful RGU-assisted urethral catheterization. Having a previous history of urologic operations, such as urethrotomy and transurethral prostatectomy, was identified as an independent predictive factor for the failure of RGU-assisted urethral catheterization (odds ratio = 9.453, 95% confidence interval = 2.703-33.063, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: RGU-assisted urethral catheterization can be one of the modalities for providing successful catheterization after failed conventional urethral catheterization. We believe that RGU-assisted urethral catheterization can be an effective procedure if patients have no previous history of urologic operations, such as urethrotomy and transurethral prostatectomy. An obligately anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive and coccus-shaped bacterium, designated strain YH-panp20T, was isolated from pig faeces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that the isolate belongs to the family Erysipelotrichaceae, and is most closely related to Catenisphaera adipataccumulans KCTC 15517T (93.5 % sequence similarity), followed by Faecalitalea cylindroides KCTC 5815T (92.2 %), Faecalicoccus acidiformans KCTC 15521T (90.2 %) and Holdemanella biformis KCTC 5969T (89.6 %). Average nucleotide identity values between YH-panp20T and its closest relatives were lower than 71 %. The G+C content of the isolate was 38.4 mol%, and its cell-wall peptidoglycan was found to be of A1γ type and contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant fatty acids were C18 : 1 cis 9, C18 : 0 DMA and C16 : 0. The major end-products of glucose fermentation were lactate, acetate and formate. Therefore, based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic properties, a novel genus and species, Absicoccus porci gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed for isolate YH-panp20T (=KCTC 15747T=JCM 32769T).

BACKGROUND: Candida sp. osteoarticular infection is rare and most often due to hematogenous seeding during an episode of candidemia in immunocompromised patients. However, the diagnosis can be delayed in patients with subtle symptoms and signs of joint infection without a concurrent episode of candidemia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old woman presented with a three-year history of pain and swelling of the left knee. Candida pelliculosa was detected from the intraoperative tissue when the patient had undergone left total knee arthroplasty 32 months ago, but no antifungal treatment was performed. One year after the total knee arthroplasty, C. pelliculosa was repeatedly isolated from the left knee synovial fluid and antifungal treatment comprising amphotericin B deoxycholate and fluconazole was administered. However, joint infection had extended to the adjacent bone and led to progressive joint destruction. The patient underwent surgery for prosthesis removal and received prolonged antifungal treatment with micafungin and fluconazole. CONCLUSIONS: This case shows that C. pelliculosa, an extremely rare non-Candida albicans sp., can cause fungal arthritis and lead to irreversible joint destruction owing to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

As Mo3Se3- chain nanowires have dimensions comparable to those of natural hydrogel chains (molecular-level diameters of ∼0.6 nm and lengths of several micrometers) and excellent mechanical strength and flexibility, they have large potential to reinforce hydrogels and improve their mechanical properties. When a Mo3Se3--chain-nanowire-gelatin composite hydrogel is prepared simply by mixing Mo3Se3- nanowires with gelatin, phase separation of the Mo3Se3- nanowires from the gelatin matrix occurs in the micronetwork, providing only small improvements in their mechanical properties. In contrast, when the surface of the Mo3Se3- nanowire is wrapped with the gelatin polymer, the chemical compatibility of the Mo3Se3- nanowire with the gelatin matrix is significantly improved, which enables the fabrication of a phase-separation-free Mo3Se3--reinforced gelatin hydrogel. The composite gelatin hydrogel exhibits significantly improved mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 27.6 kPa, fracture toughness of 26.9 kJ/m3, and elastic modulus of 54.8 kPa, which are 367%, 868%, and 378% higher than those of the pure gelatin hydrogel, respectively. Furthermore, the amount of Mo3Se3- nanowires added in the composite hydrogel is as low as 0.01 wt %. The improvements in the mechanical properties are significantly larger than those for other reported composite hydrogels reinforced with one-dimensional materials.

OBJECTIVE: Low back pain (LBP) has commonly been managed via classification-specific interventions in homogeneous groups. However, it is largely unknown whether treatment tailored to specific classifications is more effective than generic treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of classification-specific treatment on the self-reported responses and erector spinae (ES) activity of patients with LBP exhibiting a lumbar extension-rotation (ExtRot) pattern. METHODS: In total, 39 patients exhibiting the lumbar ExtRot pattern were randomized to an experimental (n = 19) group and a control (n = 20) group. Participants in the experimental group received classification-specific treatment, which included exercise to control or prevent lumbopelvic motion during lower-extremity movement. Participants in the control group were encouraged to perform general exercises and were educated about LBP. Patient-reported pain intensity, disability, and fear-avoidance belief and ES muscle activity during walking were assessed prior to and after the intervention. Two-way analysis of covariance was used to examine the effects of classification-specific treatment. RESULTS: After 6-week intervention, significant time-by-group interaction effects were demonstrated on pain intensity, disability, fear-avoidance beliefs-physical activity score, and ES muscle activity during walking. There were significant effects of group on pain, disability, and fear-avoidance beliefs-physical activity score after intervention. After the 6-week intervention, the ES muscle activity significantly decreased in the experimental group during walking, but does not represent an all-events decrease. CONCLUSION: Classification-specific treatment may be effective in patients with LBP exhibiting the lumbar ExtRot pattern, reducing pain intensity, disability, fear-avoidance beliefs, and ES muscle activity during walking.
