RESUMEN

Boron-based two-dimensional (2D) materials are an excellent platform for nanoelectronics applications. Rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS) is attracting particular attention because of its unique layered crystal structure suitable for exploring various functional properties originating in the 2D nature. However, studies to elucidate its fundamental electronic states have been largely limited because only tiny powdered crystals were available, hindering a precise investigation by spectroscopy such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Here we report the direct mapping of the band structure with a tiny (∼20 × 20 µm2) r-BS powder crystal by utilizing microfocused ARPES. We found that r-BS is a p-type semiconductor with a band gap of >0.5 eV characterized by the anisotropic in-plane effective mass. The present results demonstrate the high applicability of micro-ARPES to tiny powder crystals and widen an opportunity to access the yet-unexplored electronic states of various novel materials.

Kagome metals AV_{3}Sb_{5} (A=K, Rb, and Cs) exhibit a characteristic superconducting ground state coexisting with a charge density wave (CDW), whereas the mechanisms of the superconductivity and CDW have yet to be clarified. Here we report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of Cs(V_{1-x}Nb_{x})_{3}Sb_{5} as a function of Nb content x, where isovalent Nb substitution causes an enhancement of superconducting transition temperature (T_{c}) and the reduction of CDW temperature (T_{CDW}). We found that the Nb substitution shifts the Sb-derived electron band at the Γ point downward and simultaneously moves the V-derived band around the M point upward to lift up the saddle point (SP) away from the Fermi level, leading to the reduction of the CDW-gap magnitude and T_{CDW}. This indicates a primary role of the SP density of states to stabilize the CDW. The present result also suggests that the enhancement of superconductivity by Nb substitution is caused by the cooperation between the expansion of the Sb-derived electron pocket and the recovery of the V-derived density of states at the Fermi level.

In order to reveal the many-body interactions in three-dimensional perovskite manganites that show colossal magnetoresistance, we performed an in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}MnO_{3} and investigated the behavior of quasiparticles. We observed quasiparticle peaks near the Fermi momentum in both the electron and the hole bands, and clear kinks throughout the entire hole Fermi surface in the band dispersion. This isotropic behavior of quasiparticles and kinks suggests that polaronic quasiparticles produced by the coupling of electrons with Jahn-Teller phonons play an important role in the colossal magnetoresistance properties of the ferromagnetic metallic phase of three-dimensional manganites.

BACKGROUND: Caloric restriction (CR) prevents senescent changes, in which reactive oxygen species (ROS) have a critical role. Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. We examined whether CR alters cardiac redox state and hypertrophy from chronic pressure overload. METHODS AND RESULTS: Male c57BL6 mice were subjected to ascending aortic constriction (AAC) with ad libitum caloric intake (AL + AAC group) or 40% restricted caloric intake (CR + AAC group). CR was initiated 2 weeks before AAC and was continued for 4 weeks. Two weeks after constriction, AAC increased LV wall thickness, impaired transmitral flow velocity, and augmented myocyte hypertrophy and fibrosis, in association with enhancement of BNP and collagen III expressions in the AL + AAC group. In the AL + AAC group, oxidative stress in cardiac tissue and mitochondria were enhanced, and NADPH oxidase activity and mitochondrial ROS production were elevated. These changes were significantly attenuated in the CR + AAC group. Additionally, in antioxidant systems, myocardial glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were enhanced in the CR + AAC group. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic pressure overload increased cardiac oxidative damage, in association with cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. Short-term CR suppressed oxidative stress and improved cardiac function, suggesting that short-term CR could be a useful strategy to prevent pressure overload-induced cardiac injury.

In situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been performed on SrVO_{3} ultrathin films, which show metallic quantum well (QW) states, to unveil the origin of the anomalous mass enhancement in the QW subbands. The line-shape analysis of the ARPES spectra reveals that the strength of the electron correlation increases as the subband bottom energy approaches the Fermi level. These results indicate that the anomalous subband-dependent mass enhancement mainly arises from the quasi-one-dimensional character of confined V 3d states as a result of their orbital-selective quantization.

It is unclear what neural processes induce individual differences in perceptual organization in different modalities. To examine this issue, the present study used different forms of bistable perception: auditory streaming, verbal transformations, visual plaids, and reversible figures. We performed factor analyses on the number of perceptual switches in the tasks. A 3-factor model provided a better fit to the data than the other possible models. These factors, namely the "auditory," "shape," and "motion" factors, were separable but correlated with each other. We compared the number of perceptual switches among genotype groups to identify the effects of neurotransmitter functions on the factors. We focused on polymorphisms of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val(158)Met and serotonin 2A receptor (HTR2A) -1438G/A genes, which are involved in the modulation of dopamine and serotonin, respectively. The number of perceptual switches in auditory streaming and verbal transformations differed among COMT genotype groups, whereas that in reversible figures differed among HTR2A genotype groups. The results indicate that the auditory and shape factors reflect the functions of the dopamine and serotonin systems, respectively. Our findings suggest that the formation and selection of percepts involve neural processes in cortical and subcortical areas.

Bofutsushosan (BTS; fangfengtongshengsan in Chinese) is a formula in traditional Japanese Kampo and Chinese medicine comprising 18 crude drugs and used to treat obesity and metabolic syndrome. In our previous study, BTS boiling water extract inhibited the uptake of fructose absorbed via glucose transporter 5 into cultured cells. In this study, the inhibitory effect of BTS extract on the absorption of fructose from the intestine was investigated in vivo. The extract of BTS was orally administered to rats at doses equivalent to 25-fold of the daily dose for humans. One minute after sample administration, fructose was orally administered and blood samples were collected from the jugular vein 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 4 h after the administration of fructose. The absorption of fructose from the intestine was significantly reduced by treatment with BTS extract, and this in vivo study reproduced previous in vitro results. Subsequently, the blood samples were collected from the portal vein 30 min after the oral administration of fructose in mice. BTS extract significantly reduced fructose absorption in mice, and compared the effect of modified BTS samples by removing one to several crude drugs from BTS. We found that the dried rhizome of Rheum palmatum (RR) significantly contributed to the inhibitory effect of BTS on fructose absorption. We found sennoside A to be the active ingredient of RR for the inhibition of fructose absorption, and that its effect almost saturated at a dose of 3 mg/kg. These results support the action mechanisms of BTS when used for the treatment of obesity in clinics and drug stores.

RESUMEN

The Kondo effect between localized f-electrons and conductive carriers leads to exotic physical phenomena. Among them, heavy-fermion (HF) systems, in which massive effective carriers appear due to the Kondo effect, have fascinated many researchers. Dimensionality is also an important characteristic of the HF system, especially because it is strongly related to quantum criticality. However, the realization of the perfect two-dimensional (2D) HF materials is still a challenging topic. Here, we report the surface electronic structure of the monoatomic-layer Kondo lattice YbCu2 on a Cu(111) surface observed by synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The 2D conducting band and the Yb 4f state, located very close to the Fermi level, are observed. These bands are hybridized at low-temperature, forming the 2D HF state, with an evaluated coherence temperature of about 30 K. The effective mass of the 2D state is enhanced by a factor of 100 by the development of the HF state. Furthermore, clear evidence of the hybridization gap formation in the temperature dependence of the Kondo-resonance peak has been observed below the coherence temperature. Our study provides a new candidate as an ideal 2D HF material for understanding the Kondo effect at low dimensions.

We performed X-ray absorption studies for the electrolytes of a Ti-Mn redox flow battery (RFB) to understand the redox reaction of the Ti/Mn ions and formation of precipitates in charged catholyte, because suppression of the disproportionation reaction is a key to improve the cyclability of Ti-Mn RFB and enhance the energy density. Hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy with a high transmittance and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy to directly observe the 3d orbitals were complementarily employed. Moreover, the Ti/Mn 3d electronic structure for each precipitate and solution in the charged catholyte was investigated by using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy: the valence of Mn in the precipitate is mostly attributed to 4+, and the solution includes only Mn2+ . This charge disproportionation reaction should occur after the Mn ions in the catholyte should be oxidized from Mn2+ to Mn3+ by charge.

Real-time monitoring of cellular temperature responses is an important technique in thermal biology and drug development. Recent study identified that Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX)-dependent Ca2+ influx transduces cold signals to circadian clock in mammalian cultured cells. The finding raised an idea that cellular responses to the cold signals can be analyzed by monitoring of clock gene expression. We found that Per1 and Per2 were up-regulated after culture at 27 °C compared to 37 °C in Rat-1 fibroblasts. In order to monitor cold-Ca2+-dependent transcription in living cells, we developed a luciferase-based real-time reporting system by using Per1 promoter, Per2 promoter, Ca2+/cAMP-response elements (CRE) or NFAT-binding elements. We found that benzyloxyphenyl NCX inhibitor KB-R7943 and SN-6, but not SEA-0400 or YM-244769 inhibited the cold induction of Per2. Our study established a real-time monitoring system for cold Ca2+ signaling which can be applied to evaluation of drugs.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using a micro-focused beam spot [micro-angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)] is becoming a powerful tool to elucidate key electronic states of exotic quantum materials. We have developed a versatile micro-ARPES system based on the synchrotron radiation beam focused with a Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror optics. The mirrors are monolithically installed on a stage, which is driven with five-axis motion, and are vibrationally separated from the ARPES measurement system. Spatial mapping of the Au photolithography pattern on Si signifies the beam spot size of 10 µm (horizontal) × 12 µm (vertical) at the sample position, which is well suited to resolve the fine structure in local electronic states. Utilization of the micro-beam and the high precision sample motion system enables the accurate spatially resolved band-structure mapping, as demonstrated by the observation of a small band anomaly associated with tiny sample bending near the edge of a cleaved topological insulator single crystal.

The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at interfaces between SrTiO3 (STO) and other oxide insulating layers is promising for use in efficient spin-charge conversion due to the large Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI). However, these insulating layers on STO prevent the propagation of a spin current injected from an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. Moreover, the mechanism of the spin-current flow in these insulating layers is still unexplored. Here, using a strongly correlated polar-metal LaTiO3+δ (LTO) interlayer and the 2DEG formed at the LTO/STO interface in an all-epitaxial heterostructure, we demonstrate giant spin-to-charge current conversion efficiencies, up to ~190 nm, using spin-pumping ferromagnetic-resonance voltage measurements. This value is the highest among those reported for all materials, including spin Hall systems. Our results suggest that the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion in LTO and the giant RSOI of LTO/STO may be the key to efficient spin-charge conversion with suppressed spin-flip scattering. Our findings highlight the hidden inherent possibilities of oxide interfaces for spin-orbitronics applications.

Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) offer an excellent opportunity to realize outstanding physical properties distinct from those of topological insulators. Since TDSs verified so far have their own problems such as high reactivity in the atmosphere and difficulty in controlling topological phases via chemical substitution, it is highly desirable to find a new material platform of TDSs. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles band-structure calculations, we show that ternary compound BaMg2Bi2 is a TDS with a simple Dirac-band crossing around the Brillouin-zone center protected by the C3 symmetry of crystal. We also found that isostructural SrMg2Bi2 is an ordinary insulator characterized by the absence of band inversion due to the reduction of spin-orbit coupling. Thus, XMg2Bi2 (X = Sr, Ba, etc.) serves as a useful platform to study the interplay among crystal symmetry, spin-orbit coupling, and topological phase transition around the TDS phase.

The incidence of sensitive skin with stinging and itch following chemical exposure in products such as cosmetics is increasing, but molecular mechanisms underlying this pathophysiology remain understudied. Here we performed transcriptional analysis of reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) 1, 6, and 24 h following topical lactic acid (LA) application, a known inducer of the sensitive skin reaction. Since little is known about the specific role of keratinocyte transcriptional changes in mediating stinging and itch, we performed pathway analysis using several publically available databases and then focused on significantly changed transcripts involved in stress responses and itch signaling using the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database. LA treatment induced damage-associated genes HSPA1A, DDIT3, IL1A, and HMGB2. Neurotrophic factors including BDNF, ARTN, PGE2, and chemokines were also upregulated. Stimulation of the RHE with 5% LA did not reduce cell viability, but reduced the trans-epidermal electric resistance, suggesting barrier dysfunction. Accordingly, skin barrier formation genes such as filaggrins (FLG, FLG2) and corneodesmosin (CDSN) were downregulated. To our knowledge, this is the first study focusing on transcriptional changes underlying the stinging response of keratinocytes upon LA stimulation. While follow-up research is needed, this study provides new insight into the mechanisms underlying the sensitive skin reaction.

Controlling quantum critical phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems, which emerge in the neighborhood of a quantum phase transition, is a major challenge in modern condensed matter physics. Quantum critical phenomena are generated from the delicate balance between long-range order and its quantum fluctuation. So far, the nature of quantum phase transitions has been investigated by changing a limited number of external parameters such as pressure and magnetic field. We propose a new approach for investigating quantum criticality by changing the strength of quantum fluctuation that is controlled by the dimensional crossover in metallic quantum well (QW) structures of strongly correlated oxides. With reducing layer thickness to the critical thickness of metal-insulator transition, crossover from a Fermi liquid to a non-Fermi liquid has clearly been observed in the metallic QW of SrVO3 by in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with the critical exponent α = 1 is found to emerge in the two-dimensional limit of the metallic QW states, indicating that a quantum critical point exists in the neighborhood of the thickness-dependent Mott transition. These results suggest that artificial QW structures provide a unique platform for investigating novel quantum phenomena in strongly correlated oxides in a controllable fashion.

Heterozygous mutations of COL2A1 create several clinical entities collectively termed type II collagenopathies. These disorders not only impair skeletal growth but also cause ocular and otolaryngological abnormalities. The classical phenotypes include the spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia (SED) spectrum with variable severity, Stickler dysplasia type I (STD-I), and Kniest dysplasia (KND). Most COL2A1 mutations occur in the triple helical region of alpha 1(II) chains: the SED spectrum is mostly attributed to missense mutations that substitute bulky amino acids for glycine residues, STD-I to haploinsufficiency of truncation mutations, and KND to exon skipping due to splice-site mutations. To further elucidate the genotype-phenotype relationship of type II collagenopathies, we examined COL2A1 mutations in 56 families that were suspected of having type II collagenopathies, and found 38 mutations in 41 families. Phenotypes for all 22 missense mutations and one in-frame deletion in the triple helical region fell along the SED spectrum. Glycine to serine substitutions resulted in alternating zones that produce severer and milder skeletal phenotypes. Glycine to nonserine residue substitutions exclusively created more severe phenotypes. The gradient of the SED spectrum did not necessarily correlate with the occurrence of extraskeletal manifestations. All nine truncation or splice-site mutations in the triple helical or N-propeptide region caused STD-I or KND, and extraskeletal changes were inevitable in both phenotypes. All six C-propeptide mutations produced a range of atypical skeletal phenotypes and created ocular, but not otolaryngological, changes.

It has been shown that positive emotions can facilitate integrative and associative information processing in cognitive functions. The present study examined whether emotions in observers can also enhance perceptual integrative processes. We tested 125 participants in total for revealing the effects of emotional states and traits in observers on the multisensory binding between auditory and visual signals. Participants in Experiment 1 observed two identical visual disks moving toward each other, coinciding, and moving away, presented with a brief sound. We found that for participants with lower depressive tendency, induced happy moods increased the width of the temporal binding window of the sound-induced bounce percept in the stream/bounce display, while no effect was found for the participants with higher depressive tendency. In contrast, no effect of mood was observed for a simple audiovisual simultaneity discrimination task in Experiment 2. These results provide the first empirical evidence of a dependency of multisensory binding upon emotional states and traits, revealing that positive emotions can facilitate the multisensory binding processes at a perceptual level.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) affects the recognition of facial expressions and attention to them. However, the relationship between 5-HTTLPR and the perceptual detection of others' facial expressions, the process which takes place prior to emotional labeling (i.e., recognition), is not clear. To examine whether the perceptual detection of emotional facial expressions is influenced by the allelic variation (short/long) of 5-HTTLPR, happy and sad facial expressions were presented at weak and mid intensities (25% and 50%). Ninety-eight participants, genotyped for 5-HTTLPR, judged whether emotion in images of faces was present. Participants with short alleles showed higher sensitivity (d') to happy than to sad expressions, while participants with long allele(s) showed no such positivity advantage. This effect of 5-HTTLPR was found at different facial expression intensities among males and females. The results suggest that at the perceptual stage, a short allele enhances the processing of positive facial expressions rather than that of negative facial expressions.

AIMS: The plasma level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been reported to be associated with left ventricular (LV) remodelling after myocardial infarction (MI). The present study was designed to examine whether anti-IL-6 receptor antibody (MR16-1) prevents the development of LV remodelling after MI. METHODS AND RESULTS: Balb/c male mice were subjected to MI by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery. The mice were then treated with an intraperitoneal injection of MR16-1 (500 microg/body) or control IgG. MR16-1 decreased the myocardial myeloperoxidase activity and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 concentration in the infarct region, concomitant with decreases in neutrophil and macrophage infiltration 3 days after ligation, while infarct size was comparable between the control IgG- and MR16-1-treated mice. At 7 days after ligation, MR16-1 significantly suppressed matrix metalloproteinase-2 activity in the infarct region. Furthermore, the MR16-1-treated mice demonstrated a reduction in LV dilatation and an improvement in LV contractile function compared with the control IgG-treated mice at 7 and 28 days after surgery, leading to an improvement in survival rate (80.6 vs. 59.5%, P < 0.05) at 28 days after surgery. The beneficial effects of MR16-1 were accompanied by histological suppression of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis in the non-infarct region. CONCLUSION: Administration of MR16-1 after MI suppressed myocardial inflammation, resulting in the amelioration of LV remodelling. Neutralization of the IL-6 receptor is a potentially useful strategy for protecting hearts from LV remodelling after MI.

RESUMEN

Genetic variation of the serotonin-transporter-linked promoter region has been reported to be associated with susceptibility to mood disorders. However, little is known about the behavioral characteristics that mediate this genetic variation and susceptibility to depression. We examined whether the serotonin-transporter genotype modulates inhibition of facial expressions and emotional words in the emotional 'face-word' Stroop task. Although negative word distractors interfered with the valence identification of positive faces among carriers of two short alleles, positive word distractors interfered with that of negative faces among carriers of one or two long alleles. We discuss a possible role of the reduced inhibitory control over semantic negative information in carriers of two short alleles in the risk of developing depressive mental state.
