RESUMEN

Here we report a bio-adhesive porous organic module (Glue COF) composed of hexagonally packed 1D nanopores based on a covalent organic framework. The nanopores are densely decorated with guanidinium ion (Gu+ ) pendants capable of forming salt bridges with oxyanionic species. Glue COF strongly adheres to biopolymers through multivalent salt-bridging interactions with their ubiquitous oxyanionic species. By taking advantage of its strong bio-adhesive nature, we succeeded in creating a gate that possibly opens the nanopores through a selective interaction with a reporter chemical and releases guest molecules. We chose calmodulin (CaM) as a gating component that can stably entrap a loaded guest, sulforhodamine B (SRB), within the nanopores (CaM COF⊃SRB). CaM is known to change its conformation on binding with Ca2+ ions. We confirmed that mixing CaM COF⊃SRB with Ca2+ resulted in the release of SRB from the nanopores, whereas the use of weakly binding Mg2+ ions resulted in a much slower release of SRB.

RESUMEN

Chiral induction is an emerging topic of interest in various areas of chemistry because of its relationship to the elusive mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking in nature. Buckminsterfullerene (C60 ) with the shape of a highly symmetric truncated icosahedron has rarely been referred for chiral induction due to the difficult symmetry breaking. In this work, we demonstrate that a chiral metal-organic framework (MOF) can provide a key field for chiral induction. C60 could be incorporated into the chiral nanochannels of the MOF using an in situ self-assembly strategy. The circular dichroism spectra of the resulting nanocomposites showed an intense chiral signal in the absorption region of C60 . Experimental and theoretical studies showed that this unprecedented chiral induction of C60 was attributed to hybridization of the molecular orbitals through a close association with the pore surface of the MOF. Our method can endow highly symmetric achiral compounds with chirality, paving the new way toward fabrication of novel chiral nanomaterials.

RESUMEN

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), narrow and straight-edged stripes of graphene, attract a great deal of attention because of their excellent electronic and magnetic properties. As of yet, there is no fabrication method for GNRs to satisfy both precision at the atomic scale and scalability, which is critical for fundamental research and future technological development. Here, we report a methodology for bulk-scale synthesis of GNRs with atomic precision utilizing a metal-organic framework (MOF). The GNR was synthesized by the polymerization of perylene (PER) or its derivative within the nanochannels of the MOF. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that PER was uniaxially aligned along the nanochannels of the MOF through host-guest interactions, which allowed for regulated growth of the nanoribbons. A series of characterizations of the GNR, including NMR, UV/vis/NIR, and Raman spectroscopy measurements, confirmed the formation of the GNR with well-controlled edge structure and width.

RESUMEN

Unlike commonly used molecular recognition techniques, recognition of polymer structures requires an additional aspect of extremely high recognition ability, by which marginal structural differences can be identified in a large polymer chain. Herein we show that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can recognize polymer terminal structures, thus enabling the first reported chromatographic separation of polymers. End-functionalized polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are selectively inserted into the MOF channel, the insertion kinetics being dependent on the projection size of the PEG terminus. This size-selective insertion mechanism facilitates precise discrimination of end-functionalized PEGs using liquid chromatography (LC). An MOF-packed column thus provides an efficient and easily accessible method for the separation of such end-functionalized polymers using conventional LC systems.

RESUMEN

Recently developed coronary angiography with intraprocedural 320-row computed tomography can be performed in a catheterization laboratory (XACT) by injecting contrast medium from a place close to the coronary arteries, thereby requiring a minimal amount of contrast medium. However, its clinical application has not yet been established. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of XACT angiography with a minimal volume of contrast medium in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). A total of 167 coronary segments were analyzed in 14 patients (9 males, median age 70 years) with suspected CAD by XACT angiography with 7.5 ml of contrast medium and invasive coronary angiography (ICA) with standard techniques. The segmental-based diagnostic accuracy of XACT angiography in detecting stenosis of ≥ 50% and ≥ 75% and visualized by ICA was good (sensitivity: 74% and 62%, specificity: 99% and 99%, positive predictive value: 93% and 80%, and negative predictive value: 97% and 97%, respectively). These results suggest that XACT angiography with a very low amount of contrast medium may have strong clinical utility for screening coronary arteries in patients with renal dysfunction or undergoing clinical procedures such as pacemaker implantation.

RESUMEN

Here, we report an unprecedented chirality transfer from a metal-organic framework (MOF) to a polymer. In this work, unsubstituted polythiophene (PTh) was prepared in the nanochannels of a chiral MOF. Circular dichroism spectroscopy revealed that nanoconfinement of the polymer chains could endow optically inactive PTh with a chiral nature. The thickness of polymer chain assemblies could be controlled by tuning the loading amount of PTh, which resulted in a drastic change in the chiroptical properties. Note that PTh liberated from the host still exhibited chirality even without the chiral support. Remarkably, the recovered PTh presented high thermal stability of chirality up to 250 °C. Our findings show that the encapsulation of the polymer chains in chiral MOFs is a simple and effective methodology not only to express the chirality of polymers but also to elucidate the inter- and intrachain chirality in polymer assemblies.

RESUMEN

Two lanthanide-containing structurally analogous porous coordination polymers (PCPs) have been isolated with the general molecular formula [Ln2(L1)2(H2O)4(ox)] n.4 nH2O (where L1 = fumarate, ox = oxalate; Ln = Dy (1), Gd (2)). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TG-MS measurements performed on 1 and 2 suggest that not only the solvated water molecules in the crystal lattice but also the four coordinated water molecules on the respective lanthanides in 1 and 2 are removed upon activation. Due to the removal of the waters, 1 and 2 lost their crystallinity and became amorphous, as confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). We propose the molecular formula [Ln2(L1)2(ox)] n for the amorphous phase of 1 and 2 (where Ln = Dy (1'), Gd (2')) on the basis of XANES, EXAFS, and other experimental investigations. Magnetization relaxation dynamics probed on 1 and 1' reveal two different relaxation processes with effective energy barriers of 53.5 and 7.0 cm-1 for 1 and 45.1 and 6.4 cm-1 for 1', which have been rationalized by detailed ab initio calculations. For the isotropic lanthanide complexes 2 and 2', magnetocaloric effect (MCE) efficiency was estimated through detailed magnetization measurements. We have estimated -Δ S m values of 52.48 and 41.62 J kg1- K-1 for 2' and 2, respectively, which are one of the largest values reported for an extended structure. In addition, a 26% increase in -Δ Sm value in 2' in comparison to 2 is achieved by simply removing the passively contributing (for MCE) solvated water molecule in the lattice and coordinated water molecules.

RESUMEN

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention because of their attractive properties. They show great potential applications in many fields. An emerging trend in MOF research is hybridization with flexible materials, which is the subject of this review. Polymers possess a variety of unique attributes, such as softness, thermal and chemical stability, and optoelectrical properties that can be integrated with MOFs to make hybrids with sophisticated architectures. Hybridization of MOFs and polymers is producing new and versatile materials that exhibit peculiar properties hard to realize with the individual components. This review article focuses on the methodology for hybridization of MOFs and polymers, as well as the intriguing functions of hybrid materials.

RESUMEN

A series of conductive porous composites were obtained by the polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) in the cavities of MIL-101(Cr). By controlling the amount of EDOT loaded into the host framework, it was possible to modulate the conductivity as well as the porosity of the composite. This approach yields materials with a reasonable electronic conductivity (1.1 × 10(-3) S·cm(-1)) while maintaining high porosity (SBET = 803 m(2)/g). This serves as a promising strategy for obtaining highly nanotextured conductive polymers with very high accessibility for small gas molecules, which are beneficial to the fabrication of a chemiresistive sensor for the detection of NO2.

RESUMEN

A genetic investigation consisting of the bla(CTX-M) typing was performed using 40 extended spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli isolates from chicken liver and 43 ESBL-producing E. coli and 42 ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from patients. The types were determined using a sequence analysis. In 31 isolates in the bla(CTX-M-1) group, there were 13 with the bla(CTX-M-1) and all were from chicken liver. Nine E. coli isolates from chicken liver and one E. coli isolate from patients were found to be bla(CTX-M-55). In the bla(CTX-M-15), there were 6 E. coli isolates and one K. pneumoniae isolate from patients. All 39 isolates in the bla(CTX-M-2) group had the blac(CTX-M-2). Fifty-five isolates were found in the bla(CTX-M-9) group, the highest detection frequency, with 36 possessing bla(CTX-M-14) : 20 E. coli and 13 K. pneumoniae from patients and 3 E. coli from chicken liver. There were 17 bla(CTX-M-27) isolates, including 10 E. coli and 7 K. pneumoniae from patients. One bla(CTX-M-90) K. pneumoniae isolate and one bla(CTX-M-9) E. coli isolate were also obtained from patients. These results indicate that the E. coli isolates from chicken liver consist of bla(CTX-M-1), bla(CTX-M-2) and bla(CTX-M-55) ; the E. coli isolates from patients consist of bla(CTX-M-14) and bla(CTX-M-27) ; and the K. pneumoniae isolates from patients consist of bla(CTX-M-2), bla(CTX-M-14) and bla(CTX-M-27). Therefore, the bla(CTX-M) type differs in isolates from chicken liver and those from humans. These results suggest that it is unlikely that ESBL-producing E. coli from chicken liver are firmly established in the human intestinal tract.

RESUMEN

Strong interchain interactions render unsubstituted polythiophene un-fusible, non-melting, and insoluble. Therefore, control of the packing structure, which has a profound effect on the optical and electronic properties of the polymer, has never been achieved. Unsubstituted polythiophene was prepared in the one-dimensional channels of [La(1,3,5-benzenetrisbenzoate)]n, where polymer chains form unprecedented assembly structures mediated by the host framework. It is noteworthy that the emission and carrier transport properties were drastically changed by varying the number of chains within a particular assembly. The response of the composite to additional guests is also examined as a method to use the composites as low-concentration sensors. Our findings show that the encapsulation of polymer chains in host materials is a facile method for understanding the intrinsic properties of conjugated polymers, along with controlling and enhancing their functions.

RESUMEN

Understanding the intrinsic properties of single conducting polymer chains is of interest, largely for their applications in molecular devices. In this study, we report the accommodation of single polysilane chains with hole-transporting ability in porous coordination polymers (PCPs), [Al(OH)(L)]n (1a; L = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, channel size = 8.5 × 8.5 Å(2), 1b; L = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate, channel size = 11.1 × 11.1 Å(2)). Interestingly, the isolation of single polysilane chains increased the values of carrier mobility in comparison with that in the bulk state due to the elimination of the slow interchain hole hopping. Moreover, even when the chains are isolated one another, the main chain conformation of polysilane could be controlled by changing the pore environment of PCPs, as evidenced by Raman spectroscopy, solid-state NMR measurements, and molecular dynamics simulation. Hence, we succeeded in varying the conducting property of single polysilane chains. Additionally, polysilanes have a drawback, photodegradation under ultraviolet light, which should be overcome for the application of polysilanes. It is noteworthy that the accommodation of polysilane in the nanopores did not exhibit photodegradation. These results highlight that PCP-polysilane hybrids are promising candidates for further use in the field of molecular electronics.

RESUMEN

AIMS: Anaemia has been reported as poor predictor in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of changes in haemoglobin (Hb) from discharge to 1 year after discharge on the prognosis using a lower cut-off value of Hb than the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: First, 547 HFpEF cases were divided into two groups, Hb < 11.0 g/dL (n = 218) and Hb ≥ 11.0 g/dL (n = 329), according to Hb at discharge, and further were divided according to Hb 1 year after discharge into Hb < 11.0 g/dL (G1, n = 113), Hb ≥ 11.0 g/dL (G2, n = 105), Hb < 11.0 g/dL (G3, n = 66), and Hb ≥ 11.0 g/dL (G4, n = 263), respectively. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) was defined as composite of all-cause death and heart failure readmission after a visit 1 year after discharge. The cut-off value of Hb was analysed by the receiver operating characteristics curve that predicts MACE. We examined the incidence rate of MACE between G4 and other subgroups and verified predictors of improving or worsening anaemia and covarying factors with change in Hb. In multivariate Cox proportional hazard model, MACE was significantly higher in G3 with worsening anaemia from Hb ≥ 11.0 g/dL to <11.0 g/dL than G4 with persistently Hb ≥ 11 g/dL (adjusted hazard ratio (HR): 3.14 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.76-5.60], P < 0.001). MACE was not significantly different between G2 with improving anaemia from Hb < 11.0 g/dL to ≥ 11.0 g/dL and G4 (adjusted HR: 1.37 [95% CI, 0.68-2.75], P = 0.38). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, independent predictors of improving anaemia were male [odds ratio (OR): 0.45], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR: 10.3), prior heart failure hospitalization (OR: 0.38), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (OR: 1.04). Independent predictors of worsening anaemia were age (OR: 1.07), body mass index (BMI) (OR: 0.86), clinical frailty scale score (OR: 1.29), Hb at discharge (OR: 0.63), and use of angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin II receptor blocker (OR: 2.76). In multivariate linear regression analysis, covarying factors with change in Hb were BMI (ß = -0.098), serum albumin (ß = 0.411), and total cholesterol (ß = 0.179). CONCLUSIONS: Change in haemoglobin after discharge using a lower cut-off value than WHO criteria has prognostic impact in patients with HFpEF.

RESUMEN

We have evaluated the feasibility of a newly developed single-use, magnetically levitated centrifugal blood pump, MedTech Mag-Lev, in a 3-week extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) study in calves against a Medtronic Bio-Pump BPX-80. A heparin- and silicone-coated polypropylene membrane oxygenator MERA NHP Excelung NSH-R was employed as an oxygenator. Six healthy male Holstein calves with body weights of about 100 kg were divided into two groups, four in the MedTech group and two in the Bio-Pump group. Under general anesthesia, the blood pump and oxygenator were inserted extracorporeally between the main pulmonary artery and the descending aorta via a fifth left thoracotomy. Postoperatively, both the pump and oxygen flow rates were controlled at 3 L/min. Heparin was continuously infused to maintain the activated clotting time at 200-240 s. All the MedTech ECMO calves completed the study duration. However, the Bio-Pump ECMO calves were terminated on postoperative days 7 and 10 because of severe hemolysis and thrombus formation. At the start of the MedTech ECMO, the pressure drop across the oxygenator was about 25 mm Hg with the pump operated at 2800 rpm and delivering 3 L/min flow. The PO2 of the oxygenator outlet was higher than 400 mm Hg with the PCO2 below 45 mm Hg. Hemolysis and thrombus were not seen in the MedTech ECMO circuits (plasma-free hemoglobin [PFH] < 5 mg/dL), while severe hemolysis (PFH > 20 mg/dL) and large thrombus were observed in the Bio-Pump ECMO circuits. Plasma leakage from the oxygenator did not occur in any ECMO circuits. Three-week cardiopulmonary support was performed successfully with the MedTech ECMO without circuit exchanges. The MedTech Mag-Lev could help extend the durability of ECMO circuits by the improved biocompatible performances.

RESUMEN

The impact of continuous flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) pumping on platelet aggregation was investigated in animal experiments utilizing six calves. A single-use MagLev centrifugal blood pump, MedTech MagLev, was used to bypass the calves' hearts from the left atrium to the descending aorta at a flow rate of 50 ml/kg/min. The LVAD's impact on blood coagulation activities was evaluated based on the platelet aggregability, which was measured with a turbidimetric assay method during the preoperative, operative, and postoperative periods. Heparin and warfarin were used for anticoagulation, while aspirin was used for the antiplatelet therapy. A decrease in platelet aggregation immediately after the pump started was observed in the cases of successful long-term pump operation, while the absence of such a decrease might have caused coagulation-related complications to terminate the experiments. Thus, the platelet aggregability was found to be significantly affected by the pump, and its initial trend may be related to the long-term outcome of the mechanical circulatory support.

RESUMEN

In this study, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanosheets with unimolecular thickness were successfully synthesized by cross-linking polymerization in the 2D nanospaces of a metal-organic framework. In contrast to 1D and 3D analogues, crystallization could be inhibited by the topological constraint of the ultrathin 2D network structure, allowing for an efficient thermal transformation reaction of PAN. The amorphous nature of the PAN nanosheets led to an increase in the access of oxygen molecules to the polymer chains, facilitating the thermal dehydroaromatization reactions to yield a ladder polymer structure with a highly extended conjugated system. Notably, further carbonization of this ladder polymer afforded graphitic carbon with a highly ordered structure because of the well-defined precursor structure.

RESUMEN

Three isostructural porous ionic crystals (PICs) based on Keggin-type POMs with different compositions but equal negative charge ([BW12O40]5- (BW12), [SiW11NbO40]5- (SiW11Nb), and [SiW11TaO40]5- (SiW11Ta)) are synthesized. Experimental and theoretical characterizations of the three PICs (1_BW12, 1_SiW11Nb, and 1_SiW11Ta) show that the substitution of Nb/Ta for W in the POMs enhances the basicity of PICs, which increases in the order of 1_BW12 < 1_SiW11Nb < 1_SiW11Ta. These findings clearly show that the increase in basicity is due not only to the increase in negative charge of the POM molecule as is often explained, but also to the character of the substituted element itself.

RESUMEN

The TinyPump is an extracorporeal, magnetically driven centrifugal blood pump with its impeller suspended magnetically and hydrodynamically to provide short-term mechanical circulatory support for children and infants. We have previously demonstrated that the in vivo experiments of the experimental TinyPump showed acceptable stable performance at pump flows averaging around 1.0 L/min with low hemolytic and thrombogenic properties for up to 2 weeks. We present here the 1-month in vivo evaluation of the TinyPump, whose design was modified further for more durable operation. The pump was implanted as a left ventricular assist device in five goats (12.5-26.7 kg), with inflow inserted into the left ventricular apex and outflow anastomosed to the descending aorta. Five animals were supported for 110 pump days, with mean pump flow of 1.19 ± 0.03 L/min at a pump speed of 2679 ± 97 rpm. Two animals reached the scheduled end point of 30 days without device failure, and mean plasma-free hemoglobin was 1.7 ± 0.8 mg/dL. Hematologic and biochemical data of these two animals showed no evidence of cardiovascular, renal, or hepatic dysfunction. Although further experiments are needed, the modified TinyPump offers promise as a short-term mechanical circulatory support device in pediatric population.

RESUMEN

Pediatric patients with end-stage heart failure require mechanical circulatory support (MCS) just as adults do. In order to meet the special requirements for neonates' and infants' MCS, pediatric circulatory support devices must be compact with low priming volume, easily controllable with low flow, less traumatic for blood cells and tissues, and biocompatible with minimum anticoagulation. We have designed and developed a miniature rotary centrifugal blood pump, "TinyPump," with a priming volume of 5 mL, which has already demonstrated its controllable performance for low flow and durability in vitro. To evaluate the feasibility of the TinyPump as a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) suitable for neonates and infants, we have examined the biocompatibility and hemodynamic performance of the TinyPump in a pediatric animal model using Shiba goats. The TinyPump is a miniaturized centrifugal pump weighing 150 g comprising a disposable pump head with a 30-mm diameter impeller having six straight-vanes and a reusable motor driver. The impeller in the pump head is supported by a hydrodynamic bearing at its center and is driven by radial magnetic force coupled to the motor driver. TinyPump implantations were performed in 22 Shiba goats (17 female and 5 male), with body weights ranging from 8.4 to 27.2 kg. Under gas anesthesia, via left lateral thoracotomy, a 22 Fr inflow cannula was inserted through the left ventricular apex, while a 6-mm outflow graft was anastomosed to the descending aorta, which were then connected to a TinyPump mounted on the animal's back. Postoperative hemodynamic monitoring included heart rate, arterial and central venous pressure, pump flow, and rotation speed. Target pump flow in all animals was maintained at 0.9 ± 0.1 L/min, which is approximately half the normal pulmonary artery flow measured in control animals. Blood samples were collected to evaluate peripheral organ functions, hemolysis, and thrombosis. Goats were divided into three groups-acute phase (6 h; n = 4), subchronic phase (6 h 2 postoperative days [POD]; n = 11), and chronic phase (3 POD-16 POD; n = 8)-based on their survival duration. In the early experiments, hemolysis and thrombi formation at the impeller bearing resulted in termination of the study. Subsequent modifications of the bearing design, pump housing design, and magnetic coupling force helped to minimize the hemolysis and thrombi formation, prolonging the survival duration of the Shiba goats to 2 weeks with minimum adverse effects on the blood components and organ functions. With further experiments and improvements in pump durability and hemocompatibility, the TinyPump can serve as a suitable circulatory support device for neonates and infants bridging to heart transplantation as well as to heart recovery.
