RESUMEN

The photocurrent spectra for large-area molecular junctions are reported, where partially transparent copper top contacts permit illumination by UV-vis light. The effect of variation of the molecular structure and thickness are discussed. Internal photoemission (IPE), a process involving optical excitation of hot carriers in the contacts followed by transport across internal system barriers, is dominant when the molecular component does not absorb light. The IPE spectrum contains information regarding energy level alignment within a complete, working molecular junction, with the photocurrent sign indicating transport through either the occupied or unoccupied molecular orbitals. At photon energies where the molecular layer absorbs, a secondary phenomenon is operative in addition to IPE. In order to distinguish IPE from this secondary mechanism, we show the effect of the source intensity as well as the thickness of the molecular layer on the observed photocurrent. Our results clearly show that the IPE mechanism can be differentiated from the secondary mechanism by the effects of variation of experimental parameters. We conclude that IPE can provide valuable information regarding interfacial energetics in intact, working molecular junctions, including clear discrimination of charge transport mediated by electrons through unoccupied system orbitals from that mediated by hole transport through occupied system orbitals.

RESUMEN

Bilayer molecular junctions were fabricated by using the alkyne/azide "click" reaction on a carbon substrate, followed by deposition of a carbon top contact in a crossbar configuration. The click reaction on an alkyne layer formed by diazonium reduction permitted incorporation of a range of molecules into the resulting bilayer, including alkane, aromatic, and redox-active molecules, with high yield (>90%) and good reproducibility. Detailed characterization of the current-voltage behavior of bilayer molecular junctions indicated that charge transport is consistent with tunneling, but that the effective barrier does not strongly vary with molecular structure for the series of molecules studied.

RESUMEN

Surface modification of titanium and its alloys is of great importance for their practical application as biomedical implants. We have studied and compared assembly of dodecylphosphoric acid on commercial polished and on nanostructured titanium disks. The latter were produced by chemical etching that created nanoscale pits of typical size of about 20 nm. Enhanced hydrophobicity and high molecular density were obtained after functionalization of the nanotextured substrate. Aging tests showed a lifetime of the organic films of about one month in phosphate buffer. The samples were characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, ellipsometry, and atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopies.

RESUMEN

Asymmetrically functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been prepared by a covalent reaction of an 11-mercaptoundecanol-modified Au surface with oxidized SWNT cylinders. While one end of the tubes is attached to gold substrate via ester groups, the free carboxylic substituents on the other end can be either ionized (CO2-) or esterified (CO2Et), creating a donor-acceptor asymmetric and acceptor-acceptor symmetric SWNT, respectively. Study of the SWNT monolayer conductance in Hg drop junction experiments reveals a pronounced diode-like behavior for donor-SWNT-acceptor junctions, while acceptor-SWNT-acceptor junctions are electrically symmetric.

Nitrofluoren-9-one and nitrofluoren-9-dicyanomethylene electron acceptors 7, 8, and 11 functionalized with a terminal thioctic acid unit have been synthesized from 2,4,5,7-tetranitrofluorenone. The self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of these compounds on gold, formed via gold-sulfur interaction, have been fully characterized by electrochemical, FTIR, ellipsometry, and contact angle measurements. Cyclic voltammetry of SAMs reveals two reversible single-electron reduction waves for fluorenone derivatives 7a,b and 11, and three single-electron reductions for the dicyanomethylene-fluorene 8b, providing the first observation of a radical trianion species in SAMs. The tendency of the thioctic anchor to form multilayers via disulfide links is noted.

Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of a donor-acceptor diad TTF-sigma-(trinitrofluorene) (8) with an extremely low HOMO-LUMO gap (0.3 eV) have been used to create molecular junction devices that show rectification behavior. By virtue of structural similarities and position of molecular orbitals, 8 is the closest well-studied analogue of the model Aviram-Ratner unimolecular rectifier (TTF-sigma-TCNQ). Compressing the monolayer results in aligning the molecules, and is followed by a drastic increase in the rectification ratio. The direction of rectification depends on the electrodes used and is different in n-Si/8/Ti and Au/8/C16H33S-Hg junctions. The molecular nature of such behavior was corroborated by control experiments with fatty acids and by reversing the rectification direction with changing the molecular orientation (Au/D-sigma-A versus Au/A-sigma-D).
