RESUMEN

This article describes the design and analysis of web-based choice experiments that examine how the demand for earthquake protection in Quebec and British Columbia (BC), Canada, is influenced by the default option and the structure of the insurance plan. Homeowners in both provinces were given the opportunity to purchase protection against earthquake losses when presented with one of the following options: the current private insurance plan and proposed public-private Risk Pools with different levels of the public layer. The default frame was changed so the homeowner could either opt-in by purchasing this coverage or opt-out of being given this protection and receiving a premium discount. Assigning participants to the public-private Risk Pools rather than the current private insurance plan increases the likelihood of purchasing earthquake insurance protection by an odds ratio of 2.7 or greater in BC and Quebec. Furthermore, opt-out enrollment design substantially increases take-up of earthquake protection relative to opt-in enrollment. The policy implications of these findings are discussed.

RESUMEN

The results of two experiments are reported that included a combined total of approximately 633,000 categorization trials. The experiments investigated the nature of what is automatized after lengthy practice with a rule-guided behavior. The results of both experiments suggest that an abstract rule, if interpreted as a verbal-based strategy, was not automatized during training, but rather the automatization linked a set of stimuli with similar values on one visual dimension to a common motor response. The experiments were designed to test and refine a recent neurocomputational model of how rule-guided behaviors become automatic (Kovacs, Hélie, Tran, & Ashby, 2021). The model assumes that rule-guided behaviors are initially controlled by a distributed neural network centered on rule units in prefrontal cortex, and that in addition to initiating behavior, this network also trains a faster and more direct network that includes projections from visual cortex directly to the rule-sensitive neurons in premotor cortex. The present results support this model and suggest that the projections from visual cortex to prefrontal and premotor cortex are restricted to visual representations of the relevant stimulus dimension only.

RESUMEN

This article introduces a biologically detailed computational model of how rule-guided behaviors become automatic. The model assumes that initially, rule-guided behaviors are controlled by a distributed neural network centered in the prefrontal cortex, and that in addition to initiating behavior, this network also trains a faster and more direct network that includes projections from sensory association cortex directly to rule-sensitive neurons in the premotor cortex. After much practice, the direct network is sufficient to control the behavior, without prefrontal involvement. The model is implemented as a biologically detailed neural network constructed from spiking neurons and displaying a biologically plausible form of Hebbian learning. The model successfully accounts for single-unit recordings and human behavioral data that are problematic for other models of automaticity. Over the past several years, we have developed novel titanium-niobium-zirconium (Ti-Nb-Zr) alloys to address the long-term performance needs of orthopedic implants. The unique properties of these alloys also render them promising candidates for blood pumps. These properties include excellent biocompatibility in combination with high strength and toughness, and low elastic modulus (low stiffness). Additionally, these metal alloys are readily hot or cold worked into complex shapes including wire, foil, tubing, and bar. They are readily machined and polished, and they can be surface oxidized to form a hard, wear-resistant, low-friction ceramic surface layer. In this diffusion-hardened condition, oxygen also hardens the underlying metal to optimize the bone between the ceramic oxide surface and the tough metal substrate. Unlike metal surfaces, oxidative wear, which can alter surface energy, friction, and hemocompatibility, does not occur. Consequently, the combined benefits of a stable, wear-resistant, low-friction ceramic surface layer with the toughness, strength, formability, and thermal conductivity of metal may provide improvements in the design and performance of blood pumps and peripheral graft and percutaneous (power) components of the pump.

Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy was compared with cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy augmented by leuprolide acetate (LA) for suppression of pedophilic behavior. Five male pedophiles (M age, 50 years; range, 36-58) were administered LA by Depo injection for 12 months, followed by saline placebo for 12 months. Testosterone levels, sexual interest preference by visual reaction time (Abel Assessment), penile tumescence (Monarch Penile Plethysmography, PPG), as well as strong sexual urges toward children and masturbatory frequency involving thoughts of children (polygraph), were measured every 3 months. On LA, testosterone decreased to castrate levels. Penile tumescence was significantly suppressed compared with baseline, but sufficient response remained to detect pedophilic interest. Pedophilic interest was also detected by visual reaction times. When asked about having pedophilic urges and masturbating to thoughts of children, all subjects self-reported a decrease. Polygraph responses indicated subjects were not deceptive. On placebo, testosterone and physiologic arousal eventually rose to baseline. As noted by polygraph, at baseline and on placebo, subjects were deceptive regarding increased pedophilic urges and masturbatory frequency. Interest preference, as measured by Abel Assessment and Monarch PPG, was generally unchanged throughout the study. Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy augmented with LA significantly reduced pedophilic fantasies, urges, and masturbation; however, pedophilic interest did not change during 1 year of therapy. Deceptive responses by polygraph suggested that self-report was unreliable. Follow-up utilizing objective measures is essential for monitoring efficacy of treatment in pedophilia. Our study supports the premise that suppression of pedophilic behavior is possible. LA may augment cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and help break the sequence leading to a re-offense.
