RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is multifold: First, to develop an educational program using artificial intelligence (AI) in middle school free semester system of South Korea. Second, to verify the program's effectiveness, the study clarified the definition of AI and AI education and considered their meaning in technology education. This study used three steps: preparation, development, and improvement. In the preparation step, this study set the theme and purpose of the AI program and selected the free semester activity type "theme selection activity." After analyzing the technology curriculum and extracting AI-related elements in the development step, this study laid out the program for 16 h of class time. In the improvement step, to augment the program's validity, the researcher revised and supplemented it as a whole through expert consultation. This research differentiated the developed program from the AI education program of other subjects and specialized it, focusing on the specificity of technology education. The study emphasized the social impact of the latest technology, ethics of AI, physical computing using AI, and technological problem-solving activity using AI. The final developed program was applied to the students, and students participated in a pretest and posttest. The study used the PATT and AI competency test tools. The PATT results showed a significant increase in the mean of both constructs in "interest in technology" and "career aspirations in technology." In AI competency, the mean of two constructs increased significantly in "social impact of AI" and "AI performance." In particular, "AI performance" showed the largest increase. There was no statistically significant change in "interaction with AI." The study results confirmed that the developed AI program was effective in technology education and career exploration, which is the primary purpose of the free semester. In addition, it was possible to confirm the technology educational value of the AI education program centered on technological problem-solving. These research results have implications for bringing AI into technology education.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to develop a program that incorporates computational thinking into technology education classrooms and to investigate its effect on students. Software (SW) education and physical computing education are frequently addressed topics in technology education, but education about computational thinking (CT) lacks interest and research. Therefore, it is necessary to further develop educational programs in technology. In this study, we developed a program integrating CT, which centered on technological problem-solving processes. The program comprised 12 total hours of hacking a remote control (RC) car using Micro:bit development tool. This study investigates the effects of the developed program with a single group pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design. Nineteen students participated in the study, completing survey instruments that measure CT competency and attitudes toward CT and technology, answering an open-ended questionnaire, and voluntarily took part in semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the technological problem-solving program positively affected participants' CT-related competencies. Moreover, we observed improvement in participants' attitudes toward technology due to the integration of CT into their technology education classes. This study provides a strong case for incorporating CT into technology education. It also suggests future research direction regarding the development of students' CT competencies in various technological problem-solving contexts.

RESUMEN

As urbanization affects the quality of regional ecosystems, which are needed to ensure the well-being of residents, urban land management plans should consider ecosystem services. While several studies have assessed urbanization impacts on regional ecosystem services in developing urban areas, they used limited approaches that only considered options pertaining to urban green space management. A modeling approach that simulates changes in urban land use and associated ecosystem services can better support urban land management decisions by comparing the effects of different scenarios. We simulated urban land use change impacts on regional ecosystem services using a patch-based cellular automata model and assessment tools for seven ecosystem service indicators in different urban management scenarios regarding green space policies in Ansan, South Korea. The simulation results showed spatial patterns of land use changes and impacts on associated ecosystem services although their impacts varied according to different service types. While urbanization affected regional ecosystem services to a lesser extent than land use changes, urban green space policies contributed to increasing ecosystem services. Our approach provides useful information for improved policy decisions with regard to coupling urban management with ecosystem services, as urban green spaces are necessary for residents' well-being.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the long-term effects of an aging suit experience on the attitudes and behaviors of nursing college students toward the elderly. The aging suit experience was an activity in which participants indirectly experienced aging by performing various activities while wearing a specially designed experience suit, and 65 nursing department sophomores were selected in this study; they responded to structured questionnaires regarding their attitude and behavior toward the elderly at five time points-before the program, immediately after the program, after sharing about the experience with others, one month following the program's completion, and three months following the program's conclusion. Their attitude toward the elderly changed negatively immediately after the experience, followed by a more positive attitude after sharing about the experience with others that was maintained afterward. Subjects' behavior toward the elderly also improved after the experience and was maintained at three months after the program's conclusion. The students' attitudes and behaviors toward the elderly were positively correlated. The demonstrated long-term effects of the aging suit experience in improving nursing students' attitudes and behavior toward the elderly in this study suggest that the experience can be applied to geriatric nursing education.

RESUMEN

Understanding landscape as a socio-ecological system where systematic interactions occur among diverse ecosystems and human society is necessary for a sustainable landscape and resource management. However, many countries with rapid economic growth, including South Korea, depend on conventional planning and policy decisions to meet increasing demands for the use of specific natural resources. Such resource-oriented planning and policy which neglect considerations for the surrounding landscape can result in conflicts of interest and regulation. We designed a landscape conservation value (LCV) map of Jeju Island, Korea to overcome rising managerial and policy issues with the provision of systematic perspectives of landscape. With a consideration for natural and human-modified characteristics of the landscape, we used landform and land cover data to create fundamental landscape types. Then, the LCV was assigned to each type by a board of landscape experts. Within a study region, we observed relatively high values in registered protected areas and unique landscapes, and areas where high and low values are aligned. The resultant LCV map can identify areas that potentially require an integrated approach to prevent adverse effects caused by a conventional approach.
