RESUMEN

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have attracted much recent interest with unique properties emerging at the few-layer limit. Beyond the reported impacts on the static magnetic properties, the effects of reducing the dimensionality on the magnetization dynamics are also of fundamental interest and importance for 2D device development. In this report, we investigate the spin dynamics in atomically thin antiferromagnetic FePS3 of varying layer numbers using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Following the absorption of an optical pump pulse, the time evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter is probed by magnetic linear birefringence. We observe a strong divergence in the demagnetization time near the Néel temperature. The divergence can be characterized by a power-law dependence on the reduced temperature, with an exponent decreasing with sample thickness. We compare our results to expectations from critical slowing down and a two-temperature model involving spins and phonons and discuss the possible relevance of spin-substrate phonon interactions.

The cyclic lipopeptide produced from Bacillus pumilus strain HY1 was isolated from Korean soybean sauce cheonggukjang. The chemical structures of the surfactin isomers were analyzed using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The five potential surfactin isoforms were detected with protonated masses of m/z 994.7, 1008.7, 1022.7, 1036.7, and 1050.7 and different structures in combination with Na+, K+, and Ca2+ ions. ESI-MS/MS analysis revealed that the isolated surfactin possessed the precise amino acid sequence LLVDLL and hydroxyl fatty acids with 12 to 16 carbons. The surfactin content during cheonggukjang fermentation increased from 0.3 to 51.2 mg/kg over 60 h of fermentation. The mixture of five surfactin isoforms of cheonggukjang inhibited the growth of two cancer cell lines. The growth of both MCF-7 and Caco-2 cells was strongly inhibited with 100 µg/µL of surfactin. This study is the first-time report of five surfactin isomers of Bacillus pumilus strain HY1 during Korean soybean sauce cheonggukjang fermentation, which has cytotoxic properties.

This study performed the first environmental and dietary exposure assessment to explore plant uptake of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) from agricultural soil and irrigation water in the Nakdong River delta, South Korea. Annual average concentrations of total PFOA and PFOS ranged from 0.026 to 0.112 µg L-1 (irrigation water), and from 0.818 to 1.364 µg kg-1 (soil), respectively. PFOA and PFOS hotspots were identified downstream of the Nakdong River and were influenced by seasonal climatic variations. The observed average biennial concentration of the sum of PFOA and PFOS decreased in irrigation water, from 0.112 µg L-1 in 2013 to 0.026 µg L-1 in 2015, suggests that the 2013 Persistent Organic Pollutants Control Act may have helped to reduce levels of PFAS at this location. This study calculated some of the highest plant uptake factors reported to date, with values ranging from 0.962 in green onions to < 0.004 in plums. Leafy vegetables and rice are important components of the Korean diet; these groups had the largest contribution to the estimated dietary intake of PFOA and PFOS, which was calculated at 0.449 and 0.140 ng kg bw -1 day-1, respectively. This corresponded to 66.4% for PFOA and 7.9% for PFOS of the EFSA reference dose (RfD). The dietary intake of PFOA and PFOS from crops alone did not exceed the RfD. However, when the estimated daily intake (EDI) from other sources such as tap water, meat, fish, dairy, and beverages was included in the exposure risk assessment, both of the EDIs to PFOA and PFOS exceeded the RfDs, indicating that there may be a risk to human health. This study concludes that consumption of crops might, therefore, be a significant and underappreciated pathway for human exposure to PFAS.

Many two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors represented by transition metal dichalcogenides have tunable optical bandgaps in the visible or near IR-range standing as a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices. Despite this potential, however, their photoreactions are not well understood or controversial in the mechanistic details. In this work, we report a unique thickness-dependent photoreaction sensitivity and a switchover between two competing reaction mechanisms in atomically thin chromium thiophosphate (CrPS4), a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic semiconductor. CrPS4 showed a threshold power density 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that for MoS2 obeying a photothermal reaction route. In addition, reaction cross section quantified with Raman spectroscopy revealed distinctive power dependences in the low and high power regimes. On the basis of optical in situ thermometric measurements and control experiments against O2, water, and photon energy, we proposed a photochemical oxidation mechanism involving singlet O2 in the low power regime with a photothermal route for the other. We also demonstrated a highly effective encapsulation with Al2O3 as a protection against the destructive photoinduced and ambient oxidations.

Recent research progress of relieving discomfort between electronics and human body involves serpentine designs, ultrathin films, and extraordinary properties of nanomaterials. However, these strategies addressed thus far each face own limitation for achieving desired form of electronic-skin applications. Evenly matched mechanical properties anywhere on the body and imperceptibility of electronics are two essentially required characteristics for future electronic-skin (E-skin) devices. Yet accomplishing these two main properties simultaneously is still very challenging. Hence, we propose a novel fabrication method to introduce kirigami approach to pattern a highly conductive and transparent electrode into diverse shapes of stretchable electronics with multivariable configurability for E-skin applications. These kirigami engineered patterns impart tunable elasticity to the electrodes, which can be designed to intentionally limit strain or grant ultrastretchability depending on applications over the range of 0 to over 400% tensile strain with strain-invariant electrical property and show excellent strain reversibility even after 10 000 cycles stretching while exhibiting high optical transparency (>80%). The versatility of this work is demonstrated by ultrastretchable transparent kirigami heater for personal thermal management and conformal transparent kirigami electrophysiology sensor for continuous health monitoring of human body conditions. Finally, by integrating E-skin sensors with quadrotor drones, we have successfully demonstrated human-machine-interface using our stretchable transparent kirigami electrodes.

[Purpose] There have been many studies on ipsilateral erector spinae in regard of prone hip extension (PHE). However, mediating methods have been focusing on the reinforcement of gluteus. Hereupon, this study is intended to identify how an increase of abdominal drawing-in maneuver influences on posterior oblique sling (POS) and suggest a mediating method to effectively reinforce them. [Participants and Methods] This study has been conducted on normal male (10) and female (10), and participants were asked to prove PHE exercise and abdominal drawing-in maneuver prone hip extension exercise (ADIM PHE). Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the contralateral latissimus dorsi, ipsilateral erector spinae, ipsilateral gluteus maximus, and ipsilateral biceps femoris. A pared t-test was used to compare muscle activity POS. [Results] EMG activity of the contralateral latissimus dorsi, ipsilateral gluteus maximus was significantly greater performed ADIM PHE than PHE. As for ipsilateral erector spinae muscle, ipsilateral biceps femoris activation was lower in ADIM PHE than PHE. [Conclusion] According to the results of this study, abdominal drawing-in maneuver seems to be an important factor that influences on muscular activation of POS.

Among two-dimensional (2D) layered van der Waals materials, ferromagnetic 2D materials can be useful for compact low-power spintronic applications. One promising candidate material is Fe3GeTe2 (FGT), which has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and relatively high Curie temperature. In this study, we confirmed that an oxide layer (O-FGT) naturally forms on top of exfoliated FGT and that an antiferromagnetic coupling (AFC) exists between FGT and O-FGT layers. From a first-principles calculation, oxide formation at the interface of each layer induces an AFC between the layers. An AFC causes a tailed hysteresis loop, where two-magnetization reversal curves are included, and a negative remanence magnetization at a certain temperature range.

Since transparent conducting films based on silver nanowires (AgNWs) have shown higher transmittance and electrical conductivity compared to those of indium tin oxide (ITO) films, the electronics industry has recognized them as promising substitutes. However, due to the higher haze value of AgNW transparent conducting films compared to ITO films, the clarity is decreased when AgNW films are applied to optoelectronic devices. In this study, we develop a highly transparent, low-haze, very long AgNW percolation network. Moreover, we confirm that analyzed chemical roles can easily be applied to different AgNW synthesis methods, and that they have a direct impact on the nanowire shape. Consequently, the lengths of the wires are increased up to 200 µm and the diameters of the wires are decreased up to 45 nm. Using these results, we fabricate highly transparent (96%) conductors (100 Ω/sq) with low-haze (2%) without any annealing process. This electrode shows enhanced clarity compared to previous results due to the decreased diffusive transmittance and scattering. In addition, a flexible touchscreen using a AgNW network is demonstrated to show the performance of modified AgNWs.

To overcome the limitation of the conventional single axis-strain sensor, we demonstrate a multidimensional strain sensor composed of two layers of prestrained silver nanowire percolation network with decoupled and polarized electrical response in principal and perpendicular directional strain. The information on strain vector is successfully measured up to 35% maximum strain with large gauge factor (>20). The potential of the proposed sensor as a versatile wearable device has been further confirmed.

Traditional medicinal plants contain a wide variety of chemicals that have potent antibacterial activity. To find an alternative agent of overcoming the problems of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the antibacterial mechanism of Ponciruss trifoliata against MRSA was investigated. Ethyl acetate (EtOAc)-soluble extract of P. trifoliata methanolic extract was evaluated for antibacterial activity using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). An EtOAc sub-fraction 08 (EA08) from silica-gel open column chromatography exhibited strong anti-MRSA activity. Apart from the study to isolate single compound from EA08, a synergistic antibacterial effect between the sub-fraction and ß-lactam antibiotics against MRSA was determined. In order to elucidate the antibacterial restoring mechanism of EA08 on MRSA, mRNA expression of mecA gene and production penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) encoded by mecA gene were monitored. EA 08 showed the strongest antibacterial activity with MIC value of 256 µg ml(-1). MIC of oxacillin against MRSA was dramatically reduced from 512 to 16 µg ml(-1) in combination with 256 µg ml(-1) of EA08. The fractional inhibitory concentration index of oxacillin was measured at 0.53 in combination with EA08 against MRSA, suggesting that EA08-oxacillin combinations exert synergetic effect against MRSA. The analysis of RT-PCR and Western blotting profiles revealed that EA08 inhibited mRNA expression of mecA gene and production PBP2a, which is a key determinant for ß-lactam antibiotic resistance, in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicated that EA08 eventually led to the reduction or inhibition of PBP2a production through translational inhibition in MRSA.

We introduce a facile method to enhance the functionality of a patterned metallic transparent conductor through selective laser ablation of metal nanowire percolation network. By scanning focused nanosecond pulsed laser on silver nanowire percolation network, silver nanowires are selectively ablated and patterned without using any conventional chemical etching or photolithography steps. Various arbitrary patterns of silver nanowire transparent conductors are readily created on the percolation network by changing various laser parameters such as repetition rate and power. The macroscopic optical and electrical properties of the percolation network transparent conductor can be easily tuned by changing the conductor pattern design via digital selective laser ablation. Further investigation on the silver nanowire based electrode line prepared by the ablation process substantiates that the general relation for a conducting thin film fails at a narrow width, which should be considered for the applications that requires a high resolution patterns. Finally, as a proof of concept, a capacitive touch sensor with diamond patterns has been demonstrated by selective laser ablation of metal nanowire percolation network.

[Purpose] This study sought to identify the gait aspects according to the FES stimulation position in stroke patients during gait training. [Subjects and Methods] To perform gait analysis, ten stroke patients were grouped based on 4 types of gait conditions: gait without FES stimulation (non-FES), gait with FES stimulation on the tibialis anterior (Ta), gait with FES stimulation on the tibialis anterior and quadriceps (TaQ), and gait with FES stimulation on the tibialis anterior and gluteus medius (TaGm). [Results] Based on repeated measures analysis of variance of measurements of gait aspects comprised of gait speed, gait cycle, and step length according to the FES stimulation position, the FES stimulation significantly affected gait aspects. [Conclusion] In conclusion, stimulating the tibialis anterior and quadriceps and stimulating the tibialis anterior and gluteus medius are much more effective than stimulating only the tibialis anterior during gait training in stroke patients using FES.

Herein, we proposed a label-free method to identify RNase H activity by utilizing in vitro transcription of fluorogenic light-up aptamers. In this work, we employed the specially designed two pivotal components of the hairpin substrate probe (HP) containing an RNA/DNA chimeric stem region and the template probe (TP) as a transcription template, and the RNase H activity was made to lead to the formation of a complete ds T7 promoter. T7 RNA polymerase could then promote in vitro transcription to generate numerous light-up RNA aptamers that result in significant fluorescence enhancements upon binding to the cognate fluorogenic dye. By leveraging this deliberate design principle, we identified RNase H activity ultrasensitively as low as 0.000156 U mL-1 with excellent specificity against non-target enzymes. We further demonstrated that the strategy can also reliably identify RNase H activity in heterogeneous biological samples such as cell lysates, ensuring its robust practical applicability. This work would provide invaluable insight for the development of innovative biosensing systems utilizing in vitro transcription of light-up aptamers, and it could be broadened to construct other assays by appropriately redesigning the HPs.

We herein present a novel ultrasensitive RNase H assay based on phosphorothioated-terminal hairpin formation and self-priming extension (PS-THSP) reaction. The detection probe employed as a key component in this technique serves as a substrate for RNase H and triggers the PS-THSP reaction upon the RNase H-mediated degradation of the probe. As a consequence, a large number of long concatemeric amplification products could be produced and used to identify the RNase H activity through the fluorescence signals produced by the nucleic acid-specific fluorescent dye, SYTO 9. Importantly, the use of the gp32 protein allowed the PS-THSP reaction to be performed at 37 °C, ultimately enabling an isothermal one-step RNase H assay. Based on this sophisticated design principle, the RNase H activity was very sensitively detected, down to 0.000237 U mL-1 with high specificity. We further verified its practical applicability through its successful application to the screening of RNase H inhibitors. With its operational convenience and excellent analytical performance, this technique could serve as a new platform for RNase H assay in a wide range of biological applications.

We herein describe a novel electrochemical strategy to detect hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by utilizing the peroxidase-mimicking activity of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NP) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Particularly, CeO2 NP/rGO nanocomposites were deposited on the commercial electrode by a very convenient and direct electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide. Due to the peroxidase-mimicking activity of CeO2 NP and the outstanding electrochemical properties of reduced graphene oxide, the reduction current of H2O2 was greatly enhanced. Based on this strategy, we reliably determined H2O2 down to 1.67 µM with excellent specificity and further validated its practical capabilities by robustly detecting H2O2 present in heterogeneous human serum samples. We believe that this work could serve as a new facile platform for H2O2 detection.

In this study, we prepared fermented products of isoflavone-enriched soybean leaves (IESLs) and analyzed their nutrients, isoflavones, anti-obesity efficacy, and effects on gut microbiota. Fermented IESLs (FIESLs) were found to be rich in nutrients, especially lauric acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. In addition, the concentrations of most essential free amino acids were increased compared to those of IESLs. The contents of bioactive compounds, such as total phenolic, total flavonoid, daidzein, and genistein, significantly increased as well. In addition, FIESLs administration in a high-fat diet (HFD) animal model improved the final body weight, epididymal fat, total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, blood glucose, and leptin levels, as well as reverting microbiota dysbiosis. In conclusion, these findings indicate that FIESLs have the potential to inhibit obesity caused by HFDs and serve as a modulator of gut microbiota, offering the prevention of diet-induced gut dysbiosis and metabolite diseases associated with obesity.

We employed very long nanowires mixed into nanoparticle thin films to improve their weak crack resistance for flexible electronics. We also measured the dependence of the failure strain and resistivity of the Ag nanowire-reinforced Ag nanoparticle thin films on the wt% and sintering condition of nanowires by means of resistance measurements under tension in an in situ tensile tester. Very long nanowires of over 90 µm suppressed thin film cracking by bridging cracks in both the transverse and longitudinal directions and also reduced the electrical resistivity under tension. Moreover, diffusion and growth of nanowires induced by the thermal annealing process was observed, resulting in a highly increased failure strain. Due to the use of the same materials, effective diffusion was facilitated, thus inducing strong bonds between nanoparticles and nanowires.

[Purpose] While recent studies have reported that cardiac rehabilitation is an effective treatment, there have been few studies of its effects in rehabilitation for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a home-based exercise training using a wireless electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring device on ACS patients. [Subjects] Fifty ACS patients were randomly divided into a experimental group of 25 patients and a control group of 25 patients. [Methods] The experimental group received education on the training before discharge from hospital and started home-based exercise training two weeks after discharge from hospital. The control group received conventional treatments. The left ventricular function was measured in both groups before the intervention at and 12 weeks, at the end of the intervention. [Results] Both the experimental group and the control group showed significant improvements in the left ventricular ejection fraction and number of regional wall motion abnormalities. In the comparison of the two groups, the experimental group showed a significantly greater decline in regional wall motion abnormalities than the control group. [Conclusion] Home-based exercise training implemented with a wireless monitoring device was effective at improving the left ventricular function of ACS patients.
