RESUMEN

A carrier design strategy of hydrogen bonding enhanced drug-carrier interaction is developed to prepare a polymeric nanomedicine with high drug loading content and superb loading efficiency. Moreover, a morphology transition from spherical to cylindrical micelles is observed upon increasing drug loading content, which can open up a new way for controlling the morphology of the polymeric nanomedicine.

BACKGROUND: The predictors of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in patients with transverse acetabular fractures (TAFs) following open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for PTOA in TAFs after ORIF. METHODS: Data of TAF patients receiving ORIF were collected from January 2012 and February 2021. Patients suffered PTOA were classified as the osteoarthritis group (OG), while those without PTOA were classified as the non- osteoarthritis group (NG) with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. PTOA was diagnosed according to Tönnis OA classification during the period of follow-up. Univariate analysis, logistic regression analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to evaluate demographics, injury-related characteristics, perioperative and post-discharge information. RESULTS: Three hundred and eleven TAF patients were analyzed in this study, including 261 males and 50 females, with a mean age of 40.4 years (range 18 to 64 years). The incidence of PTOA was 29.6% (92 of 311) during the mean follow-up of 36.8 months (range 24 to 70 months). Several factors of PTOA were found using univariate analysis, including transverse fracture associated with posterior wall acetabular fracture (TPW-AF, p = 0.002), acetabular roof fracture (ARF, p = 0.001), femoral head lesion (FHL, p = 0.016), longer time from injury to surgery (TIS, p<0.001) and physical work after surgery (PWAS, p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that TPW-AF (p = 0.007, OR = 2.610, 95%CI: 1.302-5.232), ARF (p = 0.001, OR = 2.887, 95%CI: 1.512-5.512), FHL (p = 0.005, OR = 2.302, 95%CI: 1.283-4.131), TIS (p<0.0001, OR = 1.294, 95%CI: 1.192-1.405) and PWAS (p<0.0001, 3.198, 95%CI: 1.765-5.797) were independent risk factors of PTOA. Furthermore, ROC curve analysis indicated 11.5 days as the cut-off values to predict PTOA. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings identified that TPW-AF, ARF, FHL, TIS and PWAS were independent risk factors for PTOA in patients with TAFs following ORIF. It can help orthopedic surgeons to take early individualized interventions to reduce its incidence.

BACKGROUND: Sacral dysmorphism is not uncommon and complicates S1 iliosacral screw placement partially because of the difficulty of determining the starting point accurately on the sacral lateral view. We propose a method of specifying the starting point. METHODS: The starting point for the S1 iliosacral screw into the dysmorphic sacrum was specifically set at a point where the ossification of the S1/S2 intervertebral disc (OSID) intersected the posterior vertebral cortical line (PVCL) on the sacral lateral view, followed by guidewire manipulation and screw placement on the pelvic outlet and inlet views. Computer-simulated virtual surgical procedures based on pelvic computed tomography (CT) data on 95 dysmorphic sacra were performed to determine whether the starting point was below the iliac cortical density (ICD) and in the S1 oblique osseous corridor and to evaluate the accuracy of screw placement (with 1 screw being used, in the left hemipelvis). Surgical procedures on 17 patients were performed to verify the visibility of the OSID and PVCL, to check the location of the starting point relative to the ICD, and to validate the screw placement safety as demonstrated with postoperative CT scans. RESULTS: In the virtual surgical procedures, the starting point was consistently below the ICD and in the oblique osseous corridor in all patients and all screws were Grade 1. In the clinical surgical procedures, the OSID and PVCL were consistently visible and the starting point was always below the ICD in all patients; overall, 21 S1 iliosacral screws were placed in these 17 patients without malpositioning or iatrogenic injury. CONCLUSIONS: On the lateral view of the dysmorphic sacrum, the OSID and PVCL are visible and intersect at a point that is consistently below the ICD and in the oblique osseous corridor, and thus they can be used to identify the starting point. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of enriched environment and impoverished environment on the learning and memory ability of manganese-exposed mice and the mechanism. METHODS: Forty female Kunming mice were randomly and equally divided into 4 group: control group (CG), standard environment and manganese exposure group (SEG), enriched environment and manganese exposure group (EEG), and impoverished environment and manganese exposure group (IEG). The mouse model of manganese poisoning was established by intraperitoneal injection of manganese chloride. The learning and memory ability was tested by Morris water maze. The expression of cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in area CA1 of the hippocampus was measured by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: In place navigation test, the SEG had a significantly longer escape latency than the CG (P < 0.05), and the EEG had a significantly shorter escape latency than the SEG (P < 0.05); there was no significant difference in escape latency between IEG and SEG (P > 0.05). In spatial probe test, the EEG had a significantly greater number of platform crossings than the SEG (P < 0.05), and the IEG had a significantly smaller number of platform crossings than the SEG (P < 0.05). The expression of CREB in area CA1 of the hippocampus was significantly lower in IEG and SEG than in CG (P < 0.05), and it was significantly higher in EEG than in SEG (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In the enriched environment, the learning and memory ability of manganese-exposed mice can be improved, which may be due to the increased expression of CREB in the hippocampus.

RESUMEN

A photo-responsive host-guest molecular recognition between a cationic pillar[6]arene host and an arylazopyrazole derived guest was established. Based on this novel recognition motif, a photo-controllable supra-amphiphile was constructed. The spontaneous aggregation can be reversibly controlled by irradiation with UV (365 nm) and green light (520 nm), leading to a switch between spherical nanoparticles and vesicle-like aggregates.

We examined the growth decline and health status of farmland protective forest belt (Populus alba var. pyramidalis and Populus simonii shelterbelts) in Ulanbuh Desert Oasis by using airborne hyperspectral and ground-based LiDAR to collect the hyperspectral images and point cloud data of the whole forest belt respectively. Through correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis, we constructed the evaluation model of the decline degree of farmland protection forest with the spectral differential value, vegetation index, and forest structure parameters as independent variables and the tree canopy dead branch index of the field survey as dependent variables. We further tested the accuracy of the model. The results showed that the evaluation accuracy of the decline degree of P. alba var. pyramidalis and P. simonii by LiDAR method was better than that by hyperspectral method, and that the evaluation accuracy of the combined LiDAR and hyperspectral method was the highest. Using the LiDAR method, hyperspectral method, the combined method, the optimal model of P. alba var. pyramidalis was all light gradient boosting machine model, with the overall classification accuracy being 0.75, 0.68, 0.80, and Kappa coefficient being 0.58, 0.43, 0.66, respectively. The optimal model of P. simonii was random forest model, random forest model, and multilayer perceptron model, with the overall classification accuracy being 0.76, 0.62, 0.81, and Kappa coefficient being 0.60, 0.34, 0.71, respectively. This research method could accurately check and monitor the decline of plantations.

Protective forests are the ecological barriers of oases in arid sand areas and can effectively prevent and control wind and sand hazards. The structural characteristics of individual trees, as the basic unit of protective forests, are the key factors affecting the protective benefits. With the typical leafless tree species of Ulan Buh Desert oasis, i.e., Populus alba var. pyramidalis, Populus nigra var. thevestina, and Populus popularis, as the research objects, and by using the ground-based LiDAR and through computational fluid dynamics (CFD), we fully explored the structural characteristics of individual trees and their surrounding aerodynamic characteristics on the basis of real 3D models. We further established the relationship between structural parameters of individual trees and wind field index. The results showed that combining AdQSM and MeshLab to build tree models had high accuracy. The wind field around the individual trees could be roughly divided into six regions, including the attenuation zone of the windward side of the plant, the acceleration zone at the top of the plant, the eddy zone, the calm zone, the transition zone, and the recovery zone of leeward side of the plant. The pressure field around individual trees showed a gradual change of high pressure on the windward side to low pressure on the leeward side. Horizontally, in the range of 20% to 50% reduction in relative wind speed, the effective protection distances were 0.21H-1.51H, 0.20H-0.91H, and 0.25H-1.64H (H was the corresponding tree height) for P. alba var. pyramidalis, P. nigra var. thevestina, and P. popularis, corresponding to effective protection areas of 18-294, 15-227, and 18-261 m2, respectively. The maximum wind speed decay rate in the vertical direction was at 0.3H height for P. alba var. pyramidalis and P. popularis, and was reflected at 0.5H height for P. nigra var. thevestina. The correlation and stepwise regression analysis of the single tree structure parameters with the wind field indicators clearly indicated that optical porosity and volume porosity dominated the protection effect. Among the wind field factors, the best regression models related to the porous coefficient were screened for three factors, including diameter at breast height, tree surface area, and optical porosity. The regression variables screened for effective protection distance and effective protection area differed among the classes.

To analyze the fixation strength of cannulated screws fixation in the treatment of femoral neck fracture with posterior tilt due to insufficient reduction. Two sets of digital models of anatomical reduction and 15° tilting reduction were established by CT data. Each group of models was modeled with two different fixation methods. One fixation method was fixed according to the standard cannulated screws recommended by AO. Another fixation method is to tilt the screw posterior tilt 15°. The final four groups of models were obtained: AO principle nailing posterior tilt model (Group A), posterior direction nailing posterior tilt model (Group B), AO principle nailing anatomic reduction model (Group C) and posterior direction nailing anatomic reduction model (Group D). The maximum displacement of the fracture end, the maximum Von-Mises stress and the stress distribution of the internal fixation were compared among the four groups. Four groups of models were established on artificial bone by 3D printing guide plate technology. The 600 N pressure test and yield test were performed on a biomechanical machine. The finite element and biomechanical models showed that groups B and C were more stable than groups A and D. The stability of group B was not worse than that of group C. When the femoral neck fracture produces a posterior tilt, a posterior reduction is allowed. The change of AO screw to posterior tilting screw fixation has more powerful advantages. No posterior tilt or posterior reduction, AO screw placement is still required.

Objective: To analyze the risk factors for osteochondral fracture (OCF) of first-time acute patellar dislocation (APD) through measurements of patellofemoral anatomy in adolescents. Methods: In this prospective study, all patients were divided into two groups according to whether OCF was detected on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Group A (associated with OCF) and Group B (without OCF). Patellofemoral anatomy was evaluated with four aspects including trochlear/patellar dysplasia, patella location, patellofemoral matching, and morphologic classification. On MRI scans, trochlear facet asymmetry ratio (TFAR), lateral trochlear inclination (LTI), sulcus angle (SA), trochlear depth (TD), and patellar depth (PD) were measured to assess trochlear/patellar dysplasia. Insall-Salvati index (ISI), Caton-Deschamps index (CDI), Blackburne-Peel index (BPI), lateral patellofemoral angle (LPFA), patellar tilt angle (PTA), and lateral patellar displacement (LPD) were measured to show the location of patella. Patellofemoral matching was analyzed through the measurements of patellofemoral congruence angle (PFCA), patellofemoral index (PFI), and patellotrochlear index (PTI). Results: A total of ninety-four adolescents from 49 boys and 45 girls (mean age, 15 years; range, 10-18 years) with first-time APD were recruited and included in Group A (65) and Group B (29). The PFI (2.62 ± 0.51 vs. 2.10 ± 0.44) and PTI (0.28 ± 0.05 vs. 0.22 ± 0.07) were significantly higher in Group B than Group A (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in other quantitative outcomes of the two groups (P > 0.05). The distribution of Dejour/Wiberg classification was statistically similar between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Adolescent patients with first-time APD complicating OCF have closer morphologic features of patellofemoral dysplasia and patella location when compared to adolescents without OCF. Abnormal patellofemoral matching increases the risk of OCF after first-time APD in adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the morphological pattern of T-shaped acetabular fractures (T-SAFs) by mapping the fracture line using 3D software. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 1298 consecutive patients with acetabular fractures, and a total of 56 T-SAF patients were enrolled. After the simulated reduction of each fracture in the software, the fracture lines of all patients were overlaid and plotted on a template. A frequency heat map was generated according to the differences in fracture line density distribution. According to the location of fracture lines, all cases were divided into three groups: posterior group, anterior group, extra-posterior group. In surgically treated patients, the surgical approach, fixation methods, and reduction quality were recorded or evaluated. RESULTS: The transverse fracture line was sinuous without involving the acetabular roof, and the longitudinal fracture line sloped forward or backward along the edge of the acetabular fossa to split the obturator foramen. The anterior and posterior edges of the acetabular fossa, the transition zone of the acetabular roof and anterior wall, the transition zone of the superior pubic ramus and anterior wall, and the posterior wall near the greater sciatic notch were areas with high rates of fracture incidence. The posterior group included 26 patients (46.4%) and the distribution of fracture lines resembled a "T" or "Y". The anterior group included 25 patients (44.6%) and the distribution of fracture lines resembled a "7″. The extra-posterior group included 5 patients (8.9%) and the fracture lines run through the ischial body. The surgical strategies vary among different groups of T-SAF patients. CONCLUSION: Our findings shed light on the characteristics of fracture lines for T-SAFs and provide a reference for surgical treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: To describe and analyze the morphological characteristics, location and frequency of pure transverse acetabular fracture lines through fracture mapping and quantitative measurements. METHODS: Transverse fractures were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. All computed tomography (CT) data were used for reconstruction and manual reduction. The reductive fracture fragments were graphically overlaid onto a three-dimensional (3D) right hemipelvis template. Then, the fracture lines were accurately depicted onto the surface of the 3D template. The fracture lines were overlapped onto the model to create the 3D fracture map and heatmap. All cases were subdivided into infratectal (62-B1.1), juxtatectal (62-B1.2), and transtectal (62-B1.3) types based on the AO Foundation/Orthopedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) classification. Some anatomic parameters of the transverse fractures were also analyzed in these 3 groups. RESULTS: Our study included forty-nine transverse fractures from 32 male and 17 female patients (mean age, 42 years; range 21-74 years) and included 19 type 62-B1.1, 17 type 62-B1.2, and 13 type 62-B1.3 fractures. The average anterior rim fracture angle was 70.0° (± 11.6°), and the posterior rim fracture angle was 92.4° (± 28.5°). The anterior rim fracture angles in 40 cases (40/49, 81.6%) fell within a wide range between 63° and 80°. On the heatmap, the hot zones were located on the highest position of the cotyloid fossa and the narrowed region, and the cold zone was on the inferior third of the articular surface. For type 62-B1.3 fractures, the hot zone was located on the posterior of the acetabular dome. There were no significant differences in anterior rim fracture angle and anterior height among the three patterns (P = 0.071, P = 0.072). Post hoc tests of the posterior rim fracture angle and the posterior height revealed significant differences among fracture subtypes (P < 0.01). The posterior intra-articular fracture line was significantly longer than the anterior intra-articular fracture line in type 62-B1.1 and type 62-B1.2 fractures (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The fracture lines of transverse fractures through the anterior rim were concentrated on the narrowed zone, and the posterior fracture lines were diffusely distributed. The intra-articular fracture line distribution was focused on the superior and middle thirds of the joint surface. The recurrent fracture lines involving the weight-bearing dome mainly converged on the posterior region of the roof.

BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a respiratory dysfunction caused by poor lung bronchial development, which may lead to long-term lung disease, threatening the lives of children. Studies have shown that premature infants with low vitamin D are highly associated with BPD. In this study, we aim to obtain insights into whether early vitamin D supplementation could prevent BPD in preterm infants. METHODS: A total of 112 preterm infants were randomly divided into two groups: the control and vitamin D supplementation (VD) group. The VD group received vitamin D (800 IU/day) within 48 h at birth for consecutively 28 days. The serum levels of 25(OH)D3 and C-reactive protein (CRP), IL6, and TNF-α were measured using ELISA assay. The arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2 ) and carbon dioxide (PaCO2 ) was measured using an i-STAT analyzer. RESULTS: The occurrence of BPD was decreased in the VD group compared with the control. The decreased serum 25(OH)D3 was significantly elevated by supplementation with vitamin D. In addition, the serum inflammation factors (CRP, IL6, and TNF-α) were significantly reduced by vitamin D supplementation. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that early vitamin D supplementation could significantly reduce BPD incidence in preterm infants. We showed that early vitamin D supplementation could significantly increase serum level of 25(OH)D3 and reduce inflammatory response thereby preventing and reducing neonatal BPD. LIMITATION: Firstly, a larger sample size will be needed to be included to gain a comprehensive understanding of the protective effects of vitamin D and BPD mechanistically in preterm infants. Secondly, the pathophysiological process of BPD will need to be studied. In addition, the pathways that vitamin D is responsible for, need to be further researched.

Background: The aim of the study was to compare the morphological distinctions of the posterior wall (PW) in different complex acetabular fractures using 3D software and fracture mapping technique and ultimately to provide for improved clinical treatment. Methods: One hundred and fourteen patients with complex acetabular fracture associated with PW were recruited. All patients were divided into two groups according to the injury mechanism of the PW: Group A (both-column and PW) and Group B (including posterior column and PW; T shape and PW; and transverse and PW). Fracture mapping was generated on the intra- and extrasurface of a standard template. The radiological parameters including spatial displacement, articular surface area, articular range, marginal impaction, and multifragments of the two groups were compared. Results: The spatial displacement, intra-/extra-articular surface area, and start and end point in Group A were 10.9 mm (IQR, 8.4-15.2), 8.2 ± 2.6 cm2, 17.9 ± 5.3 cm2, 0.8° (IQR, -6.0-16.2), and 107.5° (IQR, 97.2-116.9), respectively. The results in Group B were 30.4 mm (IQR, 16.8-48.7), 4.1 ± 2.0 cm2, 10.6 ± 4.4 cm2, 29.5° (IQR, 19.2-38.0), and 117.5° (IQR, 98.2-127.2), respectively. Marginal impaction was defined by Letournel et al. All the differences between two groups were significant (P < 0.05). The fracture map in Group A showed an "L"-shaped pattern and a "cusp" on the ilium, and the PW was located at 1/5 to 1/4 of the posterosuperior part of the acetabulum. The fracture maps in Group B were scattered and lacked consistency, and the PWs were confined to 1/10 to 1/8 of the posterior acetabulum. Conclusions: Quantitative measurements and fracture mapping represented the differences in morphological characteristics of PWs associated with complex acetabular fractures.

In recent years, due to the combined effects of individual behavior, psychological factors, environmental exposure, medical conditions, biological factors, etc., the incidence of preterm birth has gradually increased, so the incidence of various complications of preterm infants has also become higher and higher. This article is aimed at studying the therapeutic effects of preterm infants and proposing the application of rSO2 and PI image monitoring based on deep learning to the treatment of preterm infants. This article introduces deep learning, blood perfusion index, preterm infants, and other related content in detail and conducts experiments on the treatment of rSO2 and PI monitoring images based on deep learning in preterm infants. The experimental results show that the rSO2 and PI monitoring images based on deep learning can provide great help for the treatment of preterm infants and greatly improve the treatment efficiency of preterm infants by at least 15%.

Active and abandoned mines pose serious health threats to humans, aquatic, and terrestrial biota. Northeastern Oklahoma, home to a number of Native American Tribes, is part of the well-known Tri-State Mining District. More than 100 years of mining production in this area has left numerous, large chat piles in the surrounding environment. Despite numerous studies and efforts on the restoration of metal contamination in this area, no studies have attempted to distinguish the contributions of different sources, particularly from the atmospheric deposition, of metals to the aquatic environment. Here, we analyzed the atmospheric deposition of Pb from Picher, a town surrounded by chat piles, and Tulsa, a primary metropolitan area in northeastern Oklahoma, from 2010 to 2016. We found that chat piles in Picher contain ~20% and 6% of fine particles that are subjective to windborne transport and human inhalation, respectively, and these fine particles contain disproportionally high concentrations of Pb. Despite the absence of industrial and human activities, airborne Pb in Picher is 2-5 times higher than that of Tulsa. A conservative estimate showed that airborne Pb may contribute up to 10% of annual Pb mass flux to a lake 18 km away from the chat piles in Picher and probably a much higher contribution for soil and water located adjacent to Picher. Despite known limitations, our study represents the first attempt to evaluate the significance of Pb-laden airborne particulate matter from a large-scale abandoned mining area where the humans are particularly vulnerable to metal exposure.

Large-scale soil application of biochar is one of the terrestrial carbon sequestration strategies for future climate change mitigation pathways, which can also help remove and sequester pollutants from contaminated soil and water. However, black carbon emissions from biochar-amended soils can deteriorate air quality and affect human health, as the biochar particles often contain a higher amount of sorbed toxic pollutants than the soil. Yet, the extent and mechanism of inhalable particulate matter (PM10) emission from biochar-amended soils at different wind regimes have not been evaluated. Using wind tunnel experiments to simulate different wind regimes, we quantified particulate emission from sand amended with 1-4% (by weight) biochar at two size fractions: with and without <2-mm biochar. At wind speeds below the threshold speed for soil erosion, biochar application significantly increased PM10 emission by up to 400% due to the direct resuspension of inhalable biochar particles. At wind speeds above the threshold speed, emission increased by up to 300% even from biochar without inhalable fractions due to collisions of fast-moving sand particles with large biochar particles. Using a theoretical framework, we show that particulate matter emissions from biochar-amended soils could be higher than that previously expected at wind speeds below the erosion threshold wind speed for background soil. Our results indicate that current models for fugitive dust emissions may underestimate the particulate matter emission potential of biochar-amended soils and will help improve the assessment of biochar emission from amended soils.

Terracing is one of the most effective ecological engineering practices that improve soil anti-erosivity properties and support plant growth in the dryland loess hilly area and other similar regions. The objective of the study was to understand the vertical distribution of root in different terraces and their relationships with soil environmental factors in the Loess Plateau of China. The vertical root distribution in the 0-400 cm soil profile, fine root distribution and soil moisture, soil nutrients (soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) and soil anti-erosivity in 0-160 cm soil profiles (every 20 cm for one layer) were investigated using the ground-penetrating radar and soil coring methods in a Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. forest under three terrace types during the growing season of 2018. We highlight several key findings here. First, level benches had the highest root density (18.14 kg m-2), followed by fish-scale pits (13.95 kg m-2) and reverse-slope terraces (9.84 kg m-2), as well as the highest soil water content, nutrients and soil stability. Second, terracing caused significant differences in root distribution (P < 0.05), leading to the variation of soil moisture, nutrients, anti-erosivity (explained over 80% variation) and reduced spatial heterogeneities of soil water content and nutrients. Third, fine root density parameters attained the highest values in the topsoil (0-40 cm soil layer) and decreased with increasing soil depth in all the three terrace types (P < 0.05). Finally, fine roots contributed to soil water improvement, nutrient promotion and soil stabilization, while higher density of coarse roots might consume soil nutrients and reduce soil anti-erosivity. We thus suggest that level benches could be a more suitable terracing measure for plantation of P. tabulaeformis Carr., and to achieve soil melioration and fixation during the ecosystem restoration process in the Loess Plateau and other arid and semiarid regions.

Soil physical properties and soil organic carbon (SOC) are considered as important factors of soil quality. Arable land, grassland, and forest land coexist in the saline-alkali reclamation area of the Yellow River Delta (YRD), China. Such different land uses strongly influence the services of ecosystem to induce soil degradation and carbon loss. The objective of this study is to evaluate the variation of soil texture, aggregates stability, and soil carbon affected by land uses. For each land use unit, we collected soil samples from five replicated plots from "S" shape soil profiles to the depth of 50 cm (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-30, and 30-50 cm). The results showed that the grassland had the lowest overall sand content of 39.98-59.34% in the top 50 cm soil profile. The content of soil aggregates > 0.25 mm (R0.25), mean weight diameter and geometric mean diameter were significantly higher in grassland than those of the arable and forest land. R0.25, aggregate stability in arable land in the top 30 cm were higher than that of forest land, but lower in the soil profile below 20 cm, likely due to different root distribution and agricultural practices. The carbon management index (CMI) was considered as the most effective indicator of soil quality. The overall SOC content and CMI in arable land were almost the lowest among three land use types. In combination with SOC, CMI and soil physical properties, we argued that alfalfa grassland had the advantage to promote soil quality compared with arable land and forest land. This result shed light on the variations of soil properties influenced by land uses and the importance to conduct proper land use for the long-term sustainability of the saline-alkali reclamation region.

In water-limited areas, revegetation of abandoned croplands may lead to extensive land-use changes and considerable variations on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). However, the impact of land-use patterns (i.e., the spatial combinations of different land-use types) on soil C and N variations following revegetation remains unclear. In this study, we measured soil organic carbon (SOC), total carbon (TC), and total nitrogen (TN) stocks to a depth of 200 cm in grassland (GL), shrubland (SL), young forestland (YF), and mature forestland (MF) under four land-use patterns in a catchment located in the Chinese Loess Plateau. The highest SOC, TC and TN stocks occurred in MF and the lowest was found in GL. Compared to every single land-use type, soil C and N stocks significantly increased under different land-use patterns. The highest SOC stock (6.51 kg m-2) was found in the GL-YF-SL pattern, and the highest TC stock (47.25 kg m-2) and TN stock (0.70 kg m-2) were both observed in the MF-YF pattern. SOC stocks showed significantly positive correlations with TC and TN stocks under different land-use patterns (p < 0.05), except for the GL-MF. The soil C-N interactions were stronger in the MF-SL and GL-YF-SL patterns compared to the GL-MF and MF-SL. Redundancy analysis indicated that the SOC, TC, and TN variations were well explained by aboveground biomass and land-use patterns, with accumulated variance of 41.6% and 54.2% in Axis 1 and Axis 2, respectively. The differences of soil C and N accumulation among land-use patterns were mostly related to different vegetation coverage and the intensity of soil erosion. This study indicates that creating proper spatial distribution of land-use types on hillslopes could benefit soil C and N sequestrations and ecosystem restoration in semi-arid environments.

In drylands around the world, ephemeral lakes (playas) are common. Dry, wind-erodible playa sediments are potent local and regional sources of dust and PM10 (airborne particles with diameters less than 10 µm). Dust clouds often cause sudden and/or prolonged loss of visibility to travelers on downwind roadways. Lordsburg Playa, in southwestern New Mexico, USA is bisected by Interstate Highway 10. Dust storms emanating from the playa have been responsible for numerous visibility-related road closures (including 39 road closures between 2012 and 2019) causing major economic losses, in addition to well over a hundred dust-related vehicle crashes causing at least 41 lost lives in the last 53 years. In order to improve understanding of the surfaces responsible for the dust emissions, we investigated the critical wind friction velocity thresholds and the dust emissivities of surfaces representing areas typical of Lordsburg Playa's stream deltas, shorelines, and ephemerally flooded lakebed using a Portable In-Situ Wind ERosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL). Mean threshold friction velocities for PM10 entrainment ranged from less than 0.30 m s- 1 for areas in the delta and shoreline to greater than 0.55 m s- 1 for ephemerally flooded areas of the lakebed. Similarly, we quantified mean PM10 vertical flux rates ranging from less than 500 µg m- 2 s- 1 for ephemerally flooded areas of lakebed to nearly 25,000 µg m- 2 s- 1 for disturbed delta surfaces. The unlimited PM10 supply of the relatively coarse sediments along the western shoreline is problematic and indicates that this may be the source area for longer-term visibility reducing dust events and should be a focus area for dust mitigation efforts.
