RESUMEN

1,3-bis(cyclohexylmethyl)cyclopentane, a renewable high-density fuel, was first produced in a high overall carbon yield (79.5%) with vanillin and cyclopentanone, which can be derived from biomass. The synthetic route used in this work contains two steps. In the first step, 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)cyclopentanone was synthesized by aldol condensation of vanillin and cyclopentanone under the catalysis of sulphuric acid. Over the optimized condensation, a high carbon yield (82.6%) of 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone was achieved at 80 ºC. In the second step, 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone was hydrodeoxygenated over the Pd/HY catalyst in cyclohexane as solvent. High carbon yields of 1,3-bis(cyclohexylmethyl)cyclopentane (96.2%) was obtained. The polycycloalkane mixture as obtained has a density of 0.943 g mL-1 and a freezing point of -35 °C. It can be blended into conventional high-density fuels (e.g., JP-10) for rockets and missile propulsion as a potential application.

RESUMEN

Modulating the electronic structure of electrode materials at atomic level is the key to controlling electrodes with outstanding rate capability. On the basis of modulating the iron cationic vacancies (IV) and electronic structure of materials, we proposed the method of preparing graphdiyne/ferroferric oxide heterostructure (IV-GDY-FO) as anode materials. The goal is to motivate lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) toward ultra-high capacity, superior cyclic stability, and excellent rate performance. The graphdiyne is used as carriers to disperse Fe3 O4 uniformly without agglomeration and induce high valence of Fe with reducing the energy in the system. The presence of Fe vacancy could regulate the charge distribution around vacancies and adjacent atoms, leading to facilitate electronic transportation, enlarge the lithium-ion diffusion, and decrease Li+ diffusion barriers, and thus displaying significant pseudocapacitive process and advantageous lithium-ion storage. The optimized electrode IV-GDY-FO reveals a capacity of 2084.1 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C, superior cycle stability and rate performance with a high specific capacity of 1057.4 mAh g-1 even at 10 C.

Carbon supported single-atom catalysts with metal-Nx configuration are considered as one of the most efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, most of the metal-Nx active sites are composed by pyridinic N at the defect locations of graphene-like supports. Here, we employ graphdiyne (GDY) as a new carbon substrate to synthesize an iron (Fe) single atom catalyst (Fe-N-GDY), showing excellent catalytic performance. Benefitting from the abundant acetylenic bonds in GDY, sp-N anchored metal atoms are created without forming defects. The sp-N and OH ligands regulate the electronic structure of Fe atoms and optimize the adsorption energy of ORR intermediates on the active sites by reducing the electron local density of Fe atoms, which accelerates the reaction kinetics and promotes the ORR activity of Fe-N-GDY. Furthermore, the practical application of Fe-N-GDY is corroborated by its high power density and long-term performance via assembling a zinc-air battery.

Utilization of porous materials for gas capture and separation is a hot research topic. Removal of acetylene (C2 H2 ) from ethylene (C2 H4 ) is important in the oil refining and petrochemical industries, since C2 H2 impurities deactivate the catalysts and terminate the polymerization of C2 H4 . Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emission from power plants contributes to global climate change and threatens the survival of life on this planet. Herein, 2D crystalline polyimide porous organic framework PAF-120, which was constructed by imidization of linear naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and triangular 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene, showed significant thermal and chemical stability. Low-pressure gas adsorption isotherms revealed that PAF-120 exhibits good selective adsorption of C2 H2 over C2 H4 and CO2 over N2 . At 298 K and 1 bar, its C2 H2 and CO2 selectivities were predicted to be 4.1 and 68.7, respectively. More importantly, PAF-120 exhibits the highest selectivity for C2 H2 /C2 H4 separation among porous organic frameworks. Thus PAF-120 could be a suitable candidate for selective separation of C2 H2 over C2 H4 and CO2 over N2 .

Using 4-connected pyrene-based building blocks with D2h symmetry and 2-connected fluorene-based linker with C2v symmetry, a 2D porous organic framework is obtained via imine condensation, PAF-130. PAF-130 has high crystallinity, permanent, and a high photoluminescence quantum yield, which is as high as 29.5% when dispersed in acetonitrile.

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between fibrotic focus (FF) and carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX in invasive ductal carcinomas (IDC) of the breast. METHODS: In 167 cases of IDC, the FF was assessed morphologically, and expression of ER, PR and CA IX was evaluated using MaxVision immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The expression of CA IX in IDC with and without FF was 56.3% (45/80) and 28.7% (25/87) respectively, with significant difference (P=0.001). In IDC with FF, the CA IX expression of tumor cells in tumors with CA IX-positive fibroblasts (35/40, 87.5%) was significantly (P<0.001) higher than that in tumors with CA IX-negative fibroblasts (10/40, 25.0%). In IDC with FF, the CA IX expression of fibroblasts of FF in grade 3 IDC (23/33, 69.7%) was significantly (P=0.006) higher than that in grade 1+2 tumors (17/47, 36.2%). The ER and PR expression of tumor cells in tumors containing CA IX-negative fibroblasts was 72.5% (29/40) and 65.0% (26/40) respectively, whereas the ER and PR expression of tumor cells in tumors containing CA IX-positive fibroblasts was 50.0% (20/40) and 42.5% (17/40) respectively; the difference was statistically significant (for both ER and PR, P=0.04). The age of patients with tumors containing CA IX-negative fibroblasts was significantly (P=0.002) older than those containing CA IX-positive fibroblasts. The FF diameter/tumor diameter in tumors containing CA IX-positive fibroblasts was significantly larger than those containing CA IX-negative fibroblasts. (3) For the groups of tumor size≤2 cm and tumor size between 2 cm to 5 cm, the diameter of the fibrotic focus was significantly (P<0.01) smaller than the fibrotic focus size of tumors>5 cm in size. CONCLUSIONS: CA IX expression is correlated with FF, and that in fibroblasts of FF correlated with patients' age, tumor grade, hormone receptors and FF diameter/tumor diameter. CA IX expression in FF might be a marker for poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer.

This paper reports a method for the differential analysis of volatile chemical components in five novel types of mosquito-repellent products based on chemometrics combined with headspace gas chromatography-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (HS-GC-Orbitrap HRMS) nontargeted screening. A total of 358 unknown substances were detected in 30 samples under specific headspace conditions. Through principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis, 36 significantly different substances with variable importance in the projection values greater than 1 were further screened, and these substances were accurately identified by GC-Orbitrap HRMS. Most substances were found for the first time in mosquito-repellent products. The clustered heat map, Venn diagram and peak area histogram showed that the mosquito-repellent products had similar volatile composition, and the volatile species and content of different types of mosquito-repellent products significantly varied. Substances, such as eucalyptol, d-limonene, α-pinene, ß-pinene, dl-menthol and methyl salicylate, may be the main sources of odour in mosquito-repellent products. This work explored the characteristic volatile components in mosquito-repellent products and comparatively analysed the chemical composition of different types of products. It can be generalised to consumer products as a case study and has positive implications for promoting product quality and safety and improving production processes.

Disposable plastic tableware was widely used and it was particularly important to identify potential hazardous substances in it and evaluate the risk to humans health. In this study, 85 substances were identified in 60 samples (22 bowls, 20 sporks, and 18 straws) by methanol extraction and non-targeted analysis using GC-Orbitrap HRMS. Subsequently, 14 high-risk substances were further screened and their migration in the samples was measured in three food simulants. Finally, based on the proposed safety limit assessment scheme for EU- authorized and unauthorized substances, the risk assessment of exposure to high-risk substances in disposable plastic tableware was performed for three age groups. The results showed that the dibutyl phthalate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in some samples exceeded the safety limit value. Overall, the risk of bowls was lower than spock and straws, and the potential exposure risk for young children was higher than that of adults and older children.

OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX and its significance in molecular subtyping of breast carcinomas. METHODL MaxVision immunohistochemical staining was used to examine the expression of ER, PR, HER2, CK5/6, EGFR, and CA IX in 117 cases of breast invasive ductal carcinomas. RESULTS: The patients' age ranged from 25 to 71 years (mean 49.6 years). All the 117 cases were subclassified into five subtypes, with 66 (56.4%) luminal A, 6(5.1%) luminal B, 10 (8.6%) HER2 positive, 20 (17.1%) basal-like, and 15 (12.8%) unclassified tumors. The expression of CA IX in luminal A and basal-like breast cancers was 13.6% (9/66) and 8/20, respectively, with a significant difference (P < 0.05). Among the luminal A cancers, the expression of CA IX in tumors > 2 cm (7/27, 25.9%) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of tumors ≤ 2 cm (2/39, 5.1%). The expression of CA IX in grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma (18/50, 36.0%) was significantly higher than that in grade 1 (2/21, 9.5%) and 2 (7/46, 15.2%) tumors (both P = 0.006). In CA IX-negative of invasive ductal carcinoma, the expression of ER and PR was 61.1% (55/90) and 55.6% (50/90), respectively; whereas in CA IX-positive cancers, the expression of ER and PR was 37.0% (10/27) and 29.6% (8/27), respectively. The expression of hormone receptors in CA IX-negative tumors was significantly higher than that in CA IX-positive tumors (for both ER and PR, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The expression of CA IX correlates not only with molecular subtypes of breast cancer, but also with the grading, hormone receptors and diameter of mammary invasive ductal carcinoma. CA IX is a relative independent marker of poor prognosis in breast cancer.

Studying the molecular mechanisms and regulatory functions of genes is crucial for exploring new approaches and tactics in cancer therapy. Studies have shown that the aberrant expression of PHF5A in tumors is linked to the origin and advancement of multiple cancers. However, its role in diagnosis, prognosis, and immunological prediction has not been comprehensively investigated in a pan-cancer analysis. Using several bioinformatic tools, we conducted a systematic examination of the potential carcinogenesis of PHF5A in various tumors from multiple aspects. Our analysis indicated that PHF5A expression varied between normal and tumor tissues and was linked to clinical diagnosis and prognosis in various cancers. The results confirmed a notable variation in the levels of PHF5A promoter methylation among several types of primary tumor and normal tissues and methylation of the PHF5A promoter played a guiding role in prognosis in some cancers. According to our findings, PHF5A played a critical role in tumor immunity and it might be an excellent target for anticancer immunotherapy. To sum up, PHF5A can be used in pan-cancer diagnostics, prognostics, and immunotherapy.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of machine learning model based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in identifying microsatellite instability (MSI) status and PD-L1 expression in endometrial cancer (EC). Methods: This retrospective study included 82 EC patients from 2 independent centers. Radiomics features from the intratumoral and peritumoral regions, obtained from four conventional MRI sequences (T2-weighted images; contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images; diffusion-weighted images; apparent diffusion coefficient), were combined with clinicopathologic characteristics to develop machine learning model for predicting MSI status and PD-L1 expression. 60 patients from center 1 were used as the training set for model construction, while 22 patients from center 2 were used as an external validation set for model evaluation. Results: For predicting MSI status, the clinicopathologic model, radscore model, and combination model achieved area under the curves (AUCs) of 0.728, 0.833, and 0.889 in the training set, respectively, and 0.595, 0.790, and 0.848 in the validation set, respectively. For predicting PD-L1 expression, the clinicopathologic model, radscore model, and combination model achieved AUCs of 0.648, 0.814, and 0.834 in the training set, respectively, and 0.660, 0.708, and 0.764 in the validation set, respectively. Calibration curve analysis and decision curve analysis demonstrated good calibration and clinical utility of the combination model. Conclusion: The machine learning model incorporating MRI-based radiomics features and clinicopathologic characteristics could be a potential tool for predicting MSI status and PD-L1 expression in EC. This approach may contribute to precision medicine for EC patients.

Allium tenuissimum L. as a kind of food condiment in northern China, is popular among more and more consumers owning to its special flavor from the flower. However, its composition has not been widely studied. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition and antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of essential oil from Allium tenuissimum L. flowers. Gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to detect the chemical composition. The antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens was evaluated by measuring the zones of inhibition (ZOI), the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), and the minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). The antioxidant effect was tested by the scavenging capacity on DPPH, ABTS+•, and •OH. The results of GC-MS showed that 72 volatile components were isolated and the structures 68 of them were identified, which comprised about 91.92% of the total composition of the oil. Among these compounds, terpenoid compounds and sulfurous compounds had the highest contents, especially dimethyl trisulfide. Our investigation demonstrated that the essential oil has better antimicrobial efficiency to Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus flavus, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In addition, the essential oil had a strong stability to UV. Furthermore, the essential oil exhibited a high radical-scavenging effect on DPPH, ABTS+•, and •OH, which is significant for application in the food industry. In conclusion, the essential oil could be used as an inexpensive and natural antibacterial and antioxidant agent in food.

BACKGROUND: Uterine somatic choriocarcinoma is a rare, clinically aggressive malignant tumor. They frequently concur with other cancer. However, the molecular pathogenesis between somatic choriocarcinoma and the concurrent carcinoma has rarely been addressed to date. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 68-years old Chinese woman with a uterine choriocarcinoma arising from serous carcinoma. The patient underwent radical surgery including total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy and pelvic lymph node resection. She received 10 courses of post-operative chemotherapy. She died of disease 13 months after her surgery. Microscopically, the tumor showed a biphasic pattern of choriocarcinoma and serous carcinoma. The choriocarcinomatous component showed a combination of cytotrophoblast, intermediate trophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast with hemorrhage and necrosis. The component of serous carcinoma was characterized by solid sheets of small cells with marked nuclear atypia and occasional glandular and papillary formation. PD-L1 was exclusively expressed in the choriocarcinomatous component. Next-generation sequencing revealed that the genetic abnormalities were overlapping between the two components.

Elaeagnus mollis oil (EMO) meal, a by-product of oil production with plentiful protein, is considered a cheap and good quality source of plant protein for use in the food industry. In this study, the influence of limited enzymatic hydrolysis of EMO meal protein on the structure, solubility, foaming and emulsifying capacities was investigated in detail. The hydrolysates with different DH values (5, 10, 15, and 17) were obtained by controlling the time of enzymatic hydrolysis with alcalase. The results showed that enzymatic hydrolysis decreased molecular weight and increased flexibility and surface hydrophobicity. At the given range of pH and concentration of NaCl, the solubility, foaming and emulsifying capacities of hydrolysates were significantly improved, especially in the area of isoelectric point, and increased with the increase of DH. It was also found that the hydrolysate with DH10 had better foaming and emulsifying stability. In general, appropriate enzymatic hydrolysis could improve the functional properties in favor of their potential use as food ingredients.

Despite the well-established pathogenic effect of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) genotypes on endocervical adenocarcinomas (ECAs), the prognostic values of hrHPV genotypes and their association with other prognostic variables have not been established. We categorized 120 usual-type human papillomavirus-associated (HPVA) ECA cases into 3 species groups (HPV16+, HPV18/45+, and other genotypes+) based on the hrHPV status. The clinical-stage, invasion patterns (Silva), and programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression were compared among genotype groups. In addition, log-rank test and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to compare progression-free survival (PFS) among different patient groups. A total of 120 ECA cases with positive hrHPV tests were included in this study. Among them, 51 (42.5%) were positive for HPV16, 50 (41.7%) were positive for HPV18 or 18/45, 9 (7.5%) were positive for other hrHPV genotypes (not including HPV16/18/45). Our data showed patients had no significant difference in clinical stages (P=0.51), invasion patterns (P=0.55), and PFS (P=0.59) across genotype groups. Overall, a relatively high prevalence of PD-L1 expression was observed in HPVA ECAs (25% by tumor proportion score [TPS] and 55% by a combined positive score [CPS]). Using TPS, 19.6% (10/51) HPV16+ cases, 32.0% (16/50) cases of HPV18 or 18/45+ cases, and 22.2% (2/9) cases of other genotypes+ cases demonstrated PD-L1 positivity. No significant difference in PD-L1 expression was seen across genotype groups (P=0.35). PD-L1 expression in tumors with patterns B and C was significantly higher than in those with pattern A (P=0.00002). Patients with PD-L1-positive tumors by either CPS or TPS showed significantly poorer PFS than those with PD-L1-negative tumors (CPS, P=0.025; TPS, P=0.001). Our data support that HPV genotypes have no prognostic value in HPVA ECAs, while PD-L1 expression serves as a negative prognostic marker in HPVA ECAs and implies an unfavorable outcome.

By using Mie resonance coupling effects, low-loss silicon particles as receiving or transmitting antennas can strongly localize the electromagnetic field. Enhanced extraordinary optical transmission (EEOT) is generated by placing two such silicon particles symmetrically on both sides of subwavelength hole arrays in the terahertz (THz) region. When the hole radius r is 17 times smaller than the resonance wavelength λ (r/λ = 0.06), the enhancement factors of the resonator-hole and the resonator-resonator coupling structures are 154- and 629-fold compared to that of the hole-only structure, respectively. The current distribution, magnetic field and Poynting vector are numerically simulated to reveal the mechanism of the proposed structure. Moreover, the Mie resonance coupling and the induced THz EEOT can be tuned in a wide frequency range. Our results provide a reference for the miniaturization of THz systems.

A highly efficient genetic transformation system of Liriodendron hybrid embryogenic calli through Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation was established and optimized. The Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain EHA105, harboring the plasmid pBI121, which contained the ß-glucuronidase (GUS) gene and neomycin phosphotransferase II (npt II) gene under the control of the CaMV35S promoter, was used for transformation. Embryogenic calli were used as the starting explant to study several factors affecting the Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of the Liriodendron hybrid, including the effects of various media, selection by different Geneticin (G418) concentrations, pre-culture period, Agrobacterium optical density, infection duration, co-cultivation period, and delayed selection. Transformed embryogenic calli were obtained through selection on medium containing 90 mg L-1 G418. Plant regeneration was achieved and selected via somatic embryogenesis on medium containing 15 mg L-1 G418. The optimal conditions included a pre-culture time of 2 days, a co-culture time of 3 days, an optimal infection time of 10 min, and a delayed selection time of 7 days. These conditions, combined with an OD600 value of 0.6, remarkably enhanced the transformation rate. The results of GUS chemical tissue staining, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and southern blot analysis demonstrated that the GUS gene was successfully expressed and integrated into the Liriodendron hybrid genome. A transformation efficiency of 60.7% was achieved for the regenerated callus clumps. Transgenic plantlets were obtained in 5 months, and the PCR analysis showed that 97.5% of plants from the tested G418-resistant lines were PCR positive. The study of the Liriodendron hybrid reported here will facilitate the insertion of functional genes into the Liriodendron hybrid via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.

A single metamaterial (MM) is generally designed to operate in only one band, and the MMs with different dimensions of meta-atoms are required to be integrated to achieve multi-spectral responses simultaneously. In this study, an all-dielectric synthetic multi-spectral metamaterial (SMM) that can efficiently operate in the visible and terahertz (THz) ranges by incorporating nanoscale features into microscale unit cells is demonstrated and investigated numerically. The resonant frequency of the proposed SMM in both regimes can be tuned independently by changing the geometric parameters such as diameter, gap, width and height of unit cells functional in two different regions, whilst maintaining high reflectance efficiency. Results show that a variety of colors can be produced from red to purple in the visible range with maximal reflectance as high as 83% while the peak frequency of the SMM can be adjusted from 8.12 to 2.13 THz in the THz range with maximum reflectance up to 94%. The reflection characteristics of the SMM mainly originate from the electric dipole (ED) and magnetic dipole (MD) resonances via Mie scattering in both regions. The strategy of this research offers the possibility of applications in bio/chemical sensing, multi-spectral imaging, filtering, detection, modulation and so on.

A kind of near-perfect metamaterial absorber, made of only Au and Si, has been presented in the terahertz band with extremely high absorptance. A flexible design method is proposed, which could create absorbers with four independent functions as follows. First, selective perfect absorption is achieved at a single frequency, which means the absorptance is more than 99.9% at the required frequency and almost 0% at adjacent frequencies. Second, nearly 100% perfect absorption is realized at more frequencies, which can be changed by simply adjusting the geometric parameters. Third, broadband absorption with a controllable band is gained, and the average absorptance exceeds 99% from 1.2 to 2 THz. Finally, the combination of single-frequency absorption and broadband absorption is accomplished, which greatly expands the application prospects of the proposed absorber. Besides, the absorber exhibits high performance over a wide range of incident angles from 0° to 60°. Meanwhile, it is insensitive to both TE and TM waves. The aforementioned design idea can be extended to other bands.

Tunable extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) with graphene is realized using a novel metallic ring-rod nested structure in the terahertz frequency regime. The generated double-enhanced transmission peaks primarily originate from the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). On using graphene, the resonating surface plasmon distribution changes in the reaction plane, which disturbs the generation of LSPRs. By regulating the Fermi energy (E f) of the graphene to reach a certain level, an adjustment from bimodal EOT to unimodal EOT is obtained. As the E f of the graphene integrated beneath the rod increases to 0.5 eV, the transmittance of the peak at 2.42 THz decreases to 6%. Moreover, the transmission peak at 1.77 THz virtually disappears due to the E f increasing to 0.7 eV when the graphene is placed beneath the ring. The significant tuning capabilities of the bimodal EOT indicate its promising application prospects in frequency-selective surfaces, communication, filtering, and radar.
