RESUMEN

Ammonium polyphosphate (APP), a pivotal constituent within environmentally friendly flame retardants, exhibits notable decomposition susceptibility and potentially engenders ecological peril. Consequently, monitoring the APP concentration to ensure product integrity and facilitate the efficacious management of wastewater from production processes is of great significance. A fluorescent assay was devised to swiftly discern APP utilizing 4',6'-diamino-2-phenylindole (DAPI). With increasing APP concentrations, DAPI undergoes intercalation within its structure, emitting pronounced fluorescence. Notably, the flame retardant JLS-PNA220-A, predominantly comprising APP, was employed as the test substrate. Establishing a linear relationship between fluorescence intensity (F-F0) and JLS-PNA220-A concentration yielded the equation y = 76.08x + 463.2 (R2 = 0.9992), with a LOD determined to be 0.853 mg/L. The method was used to assess the degradation capacity of APP-degrading bacteria. Strain D-3 was isolated, and subsequent analysis of its 16S DNA sequence classified it as belonging to the Acinetobacter genus. Acinetobacter nosocomialis D-3 demonstrated superior APP degradation capabilities under pH 7 at 37 °C, with degradation rates exceeding 85% over a four-day cultivation period. It underscores the sensitivity and efficacy of the proposed method for APP detection. Furthermore, Acinetobacter nosocomialis D-3 exhibits promising potential for remediation of residual APP through environmental biodegradation processes.

RESUMEN

Pore space partition (PSP) is an effective materials design method for developing high-performance small-pore materials for storage and separation of gas molecules. The continued success of PSP depends on broad availability and judicious choice of pore-partition ligands and better understanding of each structural module on stability and sorption properties. Here, by using substructural bioisosteric strategy (sub-BIS), a dramatic expansion of pore-partitioned materials is targeted by using ditopic dipyridyl ligands with non-aromatic cores or extenders, as well as by expanding heterometallic clusters to uncommon nickel-vanadium and nickel-indium clusters rarely known before in porous materials. The dual-module iterative refinement of pore-partition ligands and trimers leads to remarkable enhancement of chemical stability and porosity. Here a family of 23 pore-partitioned materials synthesized from five pore-partition ligands and seven types of trimeric clusters is reported. New materials with such compositionally and structurally diverse framework modules reveal key factors that dictate stability, porosity, and gas separation properties. Among these, materials based on heterometallic vanadium-nickel trimeric clusters give rise to the highest long-term hydrolytic stability and remarkable uptake capacity for CO2 , C2 H2 /C2 H4 /C2 H6 , and C3 H6 /C3 H8 hydrocarbon gases. The breakthrough experiment shows the potential application of new materials for separating gas mixtures such as C2 H2 /CO2 .

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Primary gastrointestinal melanoma (PGIM) has received more attention because of its inferior prognosis. Less is known about the incidence and survival rate of PGIM. METHODS: PGIM data were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The incidence was estimated by age, sex, race, and primary site. Trends in incidence were described as annual percent change (APC). Cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) rates were estimated and compared using log-rank tests. Cox regression analyses were performed to identify independent prognostic factors. RESULTS: The overall incidence of PGIM was 0.360/1,000,000 with a significant upward trend (APC = 1.77%; 95% CI 0.89%-2.67%, p < 0.001) from 1975 to 2016. Most PGIM occurred in the large intestine (0.127/1,000,000) and anorectum (0.182/1,000,000), and both incidences were almost 10 times higher than those of other sites, including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. The median survival time was 16 months (IQR, 7-47 months) for CSS and 15 months (IQR, 6-37 months) for OS, and the 3-year CSS and OS rates were 29.5% and 25.4%, respectively. Older age, advanced stage, absence of surgery, and melanoma in the stomach were the independent risk indicators of survival and associated with worse CSS and OS. CONCLUSION: The incidence of PGIM has been increasing over the past decades and the prognosis is poor. Thus, further studies are warranted to improve the survival, and more attention should be paid to the patients that are elderly, patients with advanced stage, and patients with melanoma in the stomach.

RESUMEN

Investigating the effect of different phases on the optical performance is crucial for thermal sensing phosphor materials. Ba(2-x)SrxMgWO6:Er3+, Yb3+, K+ double perovskite phosphors were successfully prepared using a high-temperature solid-phase method. The dominant up-conversion luminescent (UCL) mechanism was deduced by analyzing the power-dependence spectra and energy level diagrams. By X-ray diffraction tests and tolerance factor calculations, it was demonstrated that the substitution of Sr2+ ions for Ba2+ ions led to the phase changing from cubic to tetragonal. The phase transition led to a decrease in the crystallographic symmetry of the compounds and changes in the optical thermometric properties. The optical temperature sensing properties were investigated using the fluorescence intensity ratio of thermally coupled energy levels (2H11/2 and 4S3/2 to the ground state energy level 4I15/2) of Er3+ ions in Ba2MgWO6, BaSrMgWO6 and Sr2MgWO6. The maximum absolute sensitivities obtained for Ba2MgWO6, BaSrMgWO6 and Sr2MgWO6 doped with 7% Er3+, 2% Yb3+ and 9% K+ were 6.77 × 10-4 K-1, 10.09 × 10-4 K-1 and 23.4 × 10-4 K-1, respectively. The comparison revealed that the phase transition caused an increase in the luminescence intensity and absolute sensitivity. This provides a useful pathway for modulating the subsequent thermometric performance.

RESUMEN

The CRISPR/Cas9 system is extensively used for plant gene editing. This study developed an efficient CRISPR/Cas9 system for Chinese kale using multiple sgRNAs and two promoters to create various CRISPR/Cas9 vectors. These vectors targeted BoaZDS and BoaCRTISO in Chinese kale protoplasts and cotyledons. Transient transformation of Chinese kale protoplasts was assessed for editing efficiency at three BoaZDS sites. Notably, sgRNA: Z2 achieved the highest efficiency (90%). Efficiency reached 100% when two sgRNAs targeted BoaZDS with a deletion of a large fragment (576 bp) between them. However, simultaneous targeting of BoaZDS and BoaCRTISO yielded lower efficiency. Transformation of cotyledons led to Chinese kale mutants with albino phenotypes for boazds mutants and orange-mottled phenotypes for boacrtiso mutants. The mutation efficiency of 35S-CRISPR/Cas9 (92.59%) exceeded YAO-CRISPR/Cas9 (70.97%) in protoplasts, and YAO-CRISPR/Cas9 (96.49%) surpassed 35S-CRISPR/Cas9 (58%) in cotyledons. These findings introduce a strategy for enhancing CRISPR/Cas9 editing efficiency in Chinese kale.

RESUMEN

Stable ambulatory electrophysiological sensing is widely used for smart e-healthcare monitoring, clinical diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, treatment of neurological diseases, and intelligent human-machine interaction. As the favorable signal interaction platform of electrophysiological sensing, the conformal property of on-skin electrodes is an extremely crucial factor that can affect the stability of long-term ambulatory electrophysiological sensing. From the perspective of materials, to realize conformal contact between electrodes and skin for stable sensing, highly conformal polymers are in great demand and attracting ever-growing attention. This review focuses on the recent progress of highly conformal polymers for ambulatory electrophysiological sensing, including their synthetic methods, conformal property, and potential applications. Specifically, three main types of highly conformal polymers for stable long-term electrophysiological signals monitoring are proposed, including nature silk fibroin based conformal polymers, marine mussels bioinspired conformal polymers, and other conformal polymers such as zwitterionic polymers and polyacrylamides. Furthermore, the future challenges and opportunities in preparing highly conformal polymers for on-skin electrodes are also highlighted.

RESUMEN

Muscle growth rate and muscle mass are important economic traits in animal production. Musculoskeletal embryonic nuclear protein 1 (MUSTN1) gene has been implicated in myofusion as well as skeletal muscle growth and repair; however, the exact role and expression of MUSTN1 in different duck breeds are not fully understood. To gain insights into the biological functions of MUSTN1 in skeletal muscle development, the MUSTN1 coding sequence of Pekin ducks (BD) and Cherry Valley ducks (CD) was compared to various other animals using the Editseq in DNAstar and MEGA software. The results showed that the duck had the highest homology with chicken. The RT-qPCR and western blot were performed to estimate the mRNA and protein expression pattern of MUSTN1 in leg muscles of BD and CD at 3 and 6-weeks of age. At 3 weeks of age, the mRNA and protein expression levels of MUSTN1 were significantly higher in BD than in CD (p < 0.05). At 6 weeks, the expression level was higher in BD than in CD. In conclusion, MUSTN1 might play a key role in positive regulation of muscle growth and development of ducks.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Existing approaches for treating elbow fractures include lateral, medial, anterior and posterior approaches, though the anterior approach is often not chosen by surgeons to avoid damage to important nerves and blood vessels. However, the anterior approach has unique advantages. The purpose of this study was to report outcomes of 38 patients with coronal plane elbow fractures treated through the anterior approach. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 38 cases of coronal plane elbow fracture treated through an anterior approach at our institution between March 2015 and July 2019. The length of the surgical incision, operation time, and postoperative complications were recorded. The range of flexion, extension, and rotation of the affected elbow and the healthy elbow were collected at follow-up. Functional outcomes were evaluated using the Mayo Elbow Function Score (MEPS). RESULTS: All 38 patients were followed up for a mean of 21.26 months (range 12-36 months). Intraoperatively, the mean surgical incision length was 8 ± 2 cm and the mean operative time was 123 ± 59 min. At the final follow-up, solid osseous union was confirmed for all coronal plane elbow fractures. The mean elbow flexion arc was 129 ± 7°, and the extension arc was 9 ± 6°. The mean pronation arc was 83 ± 3°, and the supination arc was 80 ± 3°. The mean MEPS was 90 ± 8 points, with 18 excellent cases and 20 cases of excellent and good results, respectively. In 31 cases, there was no significant difference in elbow extension, flexion, or pronation between the single-fracture and healthy elbows (P > 0.05), though the arc of supination was slightly worse than that of the healthy elbow (P < 0.05). VAS pain scores before the operation, at three months after the operation, and during follow-up were compared, and pain was significantly reduced after treatment (P < 0.05). Two patients experienced transient postoperative median nerve paralysis, from which they recovered within three months. One patient had mild heterotopic ossification and was not treated because it did not affect the function of the elbow joint. All patients returned to work and were satisfied with the treatment. CONCLUSION: The anterior approach has the benefits of simplicity, safety, minimal invasiveness, excellent exposure, and satisfactory prognosis for coronal plane elbow fracture.

RESUMEN

A first example of an sp2 carbon-conjugated three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic framework (COF) (BUCT-COF-4) is synthesized via the Knoevenagel condensation of the saddle-shaped aldehyde-substituted cyclooctatetrathiophene and 1,4-phenylenediacetonitrile. Ascribed to the extended π-conjugation and long-range ordered structures, BUCT-COF-4 displays high Hall electron mobility of 1.97 cm2 V-1 s-1 at room temperature. After it is doped with iodine, the material not only exhibits an enhanced electron mobility up to 2.62 cm2 V-1 s-1 in ambient air but also presents an unexpected metal-free ferromagnetic phase transition arising from the formation of aligned spins unidirectional across the whole sp2 carbon-conjugated 3D framework. This is the first report of a ferromagnetic phenomenon in 3D COF materials, which would broaden promising applications and open a new frontier in COF materials.

RESUMEN

Due to the rapid development of industrial society, air pollution is becoming a serious problem which has being a huge threat to human health. Ultrafine particles (UFPs), one of the major air pollutants, are often the culprits of human diseases. At present, most of the toxicological studies of UFPs focus on their biological effects on lung cells and tissues, but there are less researches taking aim at the negative effects on functional proteins within the body. Therefore, we experimentally explored the effects of ultrafine carbon black (UFCB) on the structure and function of trypsin. After a short-term exposure to UFCB, the trypsin aromatic amino acid microenvironment, protein backbone and secondary structure were changed significantly, and the enzyme activity showed a trend that rose at first, then dropped. In addition, UFCB interacts with trypsin in the form of a complex. These studies demonstrated the negative effects of UFCB on trypsin, evidencing potential effects on animals and humans.

RESUMEN

Axisymmetric extension of beam steering angles by metasurfaces is of great interest due to its potential application in extending the angular scan range of existing phased arrays. This angle-multiplexed manipulation functionality requires anti-symmetrically angle-dispersive phase gradient, as well as anti-symmetric angular phase dispersion over continuous incident angles, which is difficult to be implemented by existing metasurfaces. In this work, a series of meta-atoms with asymmetric structures are developed to achieve the required phase response. Based on the asymmetric meta-atoms, an angle-dispersive metasurface for axisymmetric beam steering of transmitted transverse-magnetic (TM) wave is designed, fabricated and tested, whose simulation and experimental results demonstrate the axisymmetric extension capability of beam steering angles from -53° ≤ θi ≤ 53° to almost -90° ≤ θt ≤ 90°.

RESUMEN

Gastrointestinal disease is the most common health concern that occurs due to environmental, infectious, immunological, psychological, and genetic stress. Among them, the most frequent diseases are gastric ulcer (GU) and ulcerative colitis (UC). DSS-induced UC and ethanol-stimulated GU models resemble the pathophysiology of human gastrointestinal disease. The current study was designed to explore the anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-cell death properties of terazosin, an α-adrenergic receptor antagonist, in vivo and in vitro. Our results indicate that terazosin dramatically activates Pgk1, and upregulates glycose metabolism, evidenced by the enhanced ATP production and higher LDH enzymatic activity. Also, terazosin significantly enhances p-AKT expression and inhibits NF-κB p65 activation through abrogating the phosphorylation of IKBα, as well as lowers Caspase-1 and GSDMD expression. The findings in this study demonstrate that terazosin exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by downregulating NF-κB-GSDMD signal pathway, along with enhancing glycolysis for gastrointestinal disease treatment. Meanwhile, we also find terazosin ameliorates ethanol-induced gastric mucosal damage in mice. Collectively, as a clinical drug, terazosin should be translated into therapeutics for gastrointestinal disease soon.

RESUMEN

Sulfur-containing scaffold, as a ubiquitous structural motif, has been frequently used in natural products, bioactive chemicals and pharmaceuticals, particularly C-S/N-S bonds are indispensable in many biological important compounds and pharmaceuticals. Development of mild and general methods for C-S/N-S bonds formation has great significance in modern research. Iodine and its derivatives have been recognized as inexpensive, environmentally benign and easy-handled catalysts or reagents to promote the construction of C-S/N-S bonds under mild reaction conditions, with good regioselectivities and broad substrate scope. Especially based on this, several new strategies, such as oxidation relay strategy, have been greatly developed and accelerated the advancement of this field. This review focuses on recent advances in iodine and its derivatives promoted hybridized C-S/N-S bonds formation. The features and mechanisms of corresponding reactions are summarized and the results of some cases are compared with those of previous reports. In addition, the future of this domain is discussed.

RESUMEN

Ski, the transforming protein of the avian Sloan-Kettering retrovirus, displays both pro- and anti-oncogenic activities in human cancer. The mechanisms underlying these conflicting observations have not been fully understood. Herein, we investigated the mechanism underlying the tumor suppressor activity of Ski. To investigate the effect of Ski re-activation on TGF-ß and Hippo/TAZ pathway, we measured its effect on the endogenous Smad target genes (PAI-1 and P15INK4B ) and TAZ target gene CTGF. The results revealed that Ski exerted its inhibitory activity in TGF-ß1/Smad signaling pathway. Ski inhibited TAZ by increasing their phosphorylation by Lats2 and did not alter the localization of TAZ. Ski inhibited lung cancer growth and invasion. Ski methylation correlated with decreased mRNA expression in human lung cancer cell lines. Thus, Ski inhibited the function of TGF-ß and TAZ through multiple mechanisms in human lung cancer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND To evaluate the incidence of preoperative anemia and its prognostic role in patients with urinary bladder cancer (BC). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 317 patients diagnosed with BC were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Univariate and multivariate analysis was used to identify independent prognostic factors and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was applied to examine the influence of anemia on survival. RESULTS 109 patients (34.4%) were anemic with a median preoperative hemoglobin of 114 g/L (interquartile range 104 to 122.5). After a median of 6 years follow-up (range: 2 to 8 years), the median recurrence-free survival (RFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) in anemic patients were significantly lower than non-anemic patients (p≤0.001). Multivariate Cox analysis indicated that anemia remained an independent predictor of RFS and OS (p=0.010, 0.007). CONCLUSIONS Anemic patients with BC are likely to have a shorter RFS and OS than non-anemic patients, and anemia is an independent predictor of RFS and OS.

RESUMEN

Nanoplastics (NPs) are currently everywhere and environmental pollution by NPs is a pressing global problem. Nevertheless, until now, few studies have concentrated on the mechanisms and pathways of cytotoxic effects and immune dysfunction of NPs on soil organisms employing a multidimensional strategy. Hence, earthworm immune cells and immunity protein lysozyme (LZM) were selected as specific receptors to uncover the underlying mechanisms of cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and immunotoxicity resulting from exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs), and the binding mechanisms of PS-NPs-LZM interaction. Results on cells indicated that when earthworm immune cells were exposed to high-dose PS-NPs, it caused a notable rise in the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in oxidative stress. PS-NPs exposure significantly decreased the cell viability of earthworm immune cells, inducing cytotoxicity through ROS-mediated oxidative stress pathway, and oxidative injury effects, including reduced antioxidant defenses, lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, and protein oxidation. Moreover, PS-NPs stress inhibited the intracellular LZM activity in immune cells, resulting in impaired immune function and immunotoxicity by activating the oxidative stress pathway mediated by ROS. The results from molecular studies revealed that PS-NPs binding destroyed the LZM structure and conformation, including secondary structure changes, protein skeleton unfolding/loosening, fluorescence sensitization, microenvironment changes, and particle size changes. Molecular docking suggested that PS-NPs combined with active center of LZM easier and inhibited the protein function more, and formed a hydrophobic interaction with TRP 62, a crucial amino acid residue closely associated with the function and conformation of LZM. This is also responsible for LZM conformational changes and functional inhibition /inactivation. These results of this research offer a fresh outlook on evaluating the detriment of NPs to the immune function of soil organisms using cellular and molecular strategies.

RESUMEN

Background and Objectives: Loss of immunoglobulin G (IgG) is accompanied with proteinuria, especially macroproteinuria. The complement system participates kidney disease resulting in proteinuria. Whether the ratio of complement and IgG is associated with macroproteinuria remains unknown. Design Setting Participants and Measurements: A total of 1013 non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients were recruited according to the electrical case records system with 268 patients who endured kidney biopsy. Patients were grouped via the estimated glomerular filtration rate or the levels of proteinuria determination. Biomarkers in different CKD groups or proteinuria groups were compared by one-way ANOVA or independent samples t-test. Pearson or spearman analysis was employed to analyze correlation between clinical indexes. Further, influence factor of macroproteinuria was studied by using binary logistic regression. The ROC curve was performed to explore probable predictive biomarker for macroproteinuria. Results: No significant difference of complement C3 and C4 among CKD1 to CKD5 stages, while higher level of complement C4 in patients with macroproteinuria. Further, C4 had a positive correlation with proteinuria (r=0.255, p=0.006). After adjusted for age, IgA, IgM, triglyceride and HDL, a binary logistic regression model showed lnC4/IgG (OR=3.561, 95% CI 2.196-5.773, p<0.01), gender (OR=1.737, 95% CI 1.116-2.702, p=0.014), age (OR=0.983, 95% CI 0.969-0.997, p=0.014), and history of diabetes (OR=0.405, 95% CI 0.235-0.699, p<0.01) were independent influence factors of macroproteinuria. The area under the ROC curve was 0.77 (95% CI: 0.75-0.82, p<0.001) for C4/IgG. The analysis of ROC curves revealed a best cut-off for complement C4 was 0.024 and yielded a sensitivity of 71% and a specificity of 71%. The area under the ROC curve was 0.841 (95% CI: 0.735-0.946, p < 0.001) for C4/IgG in IgA nephropathy patients. The analysis of ROC curves revealed a best cut-off for complement C4/IgG was 0.026 and yielded a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 81.2%. The area under the ROC curve for C4/IgG in CKD1-5 stages were 0.772, 0.811, 0.785, 0.835, 0.674. Conclusion: Complement C4/IgG could be used to predict macroproteinuria.

RESUMEN

Halophenylacetamides (HPAcAms) have been identified as a new group of nitrogenous aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water, but the toxicity mechanisms associated with HPAcAms remain almost completely unknown. In this work, the cytotoxicity of HPAcAms in human hepatoma (HepG2) cells was evaluated, intracellular oxidative stress/damage levels were analyzed, their binding interactions with antioxidative enzyme were explored, and a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model was established. Results indicated that the EC50 values of HPAcAms ranged from 2353 µM to 9780 µM, and the isomeric structure as well as the type and number of halogen substitutions could obviously induce the change in the cytotoxicity of HPAcAms. Upon exposure to 2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)acetamide (3,4-DCPAcAm), various important biomarkers linked to oxidative stress and damage, such as reactive oxygen species, 8hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine, and cell apoptosis, exhibited a significant increase in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, 3,4-DCPAcAm could directly bind with Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase and induce the alterations in the structure and activity, and the formation of complexes was predominantly influenced by the van der Waals force and hydrogen bonding. The QSAR model supported that the nucleophilic reactivity as well as the molecular compactness might be highly important in their cytotoxicity mechanisms in HepG2 cells, and 2-(2,4-dibromophenyl)acetamide and 2-(3,4-dibromophenyl)acetamide deserved particular attention in future studies due to the relatively higher predicted cytotoxicity. This study provided the first comprehensive investigation on the cytotoxicity mechanisms of HPAcAm DBPs.

RESUMEN

The reduction in the rheological parameters and dissolution rate of precursors in geopolymer coatings during early hydration significantly contributes to sagging. This study aims to improve the sag resistance of these coatings by incorporating diatomite filler. Rheological testing was conducted to assess the impact of diatomite and its concentration on the yield stress, plastic viscosity, and thixotropy of the geopolymer coatings. The results indicated that diatomite's large specific surface area and high reactivity have a significant influence on the rheological parameters and early dissolution rate of precursors. With a diatomite concentration of 1.1%, the coating exhibited a yield stress of 2.749 Pa and a plastic viscosity of 0.921 Pa·s, maintaining stability, homogeneity, and no sagging at a thickness of 600 µm. Furthermore, the highly active SiO2 in diatomite participates in the secondary hydration reaction of the geopolymer materials led to the formation of substantial C-(A)-S-H gel. This gel enhances internal interconnectivity within the coating, thereby improving its rheological and mechanical properties.
