RESUMEN

In this Letter, we report a bridge-connected three-electrode germanium-on-silicon (Ge-on-Si) avalanche photodiode (APD) array compatible with the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. In addition to the two electrodes on the Si substrate, a third electrode is designed for Ge. A single three-electrode APD was tested and analyzed. By applying a positive voltage on the Ge electrode, the dark current of the device can be reduced, and yet the response of the device can be increased. Under a dark current of 100 nA, as the voltage on Ge increases from 0 V to 15 V, the light responsivity is increased from 0.6 A/W to 1.17 A/W. We report, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the near-infrared imaging properties of an array of three-electrode Ge-on-Si APDs. Experiments show that the device can be used for LiDAR imaging and low-light detection.

BACKGROUND: Nanoplastics (NPs) are omnipresent in our lives as a new type of pollution with a tiny size. It can enter organisms from the environment, accumulate in the body, and be passed down the food chain. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a nonspecific intestinal inflammatory disease that is recurrent and prevalent in the population. Given that the intestinal features of colitis may affect the behavior and toxicity of NPs, it is imperative to clarify the risk and toxicity mechanisms of NPs in colitis models. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, mice were subjected to three cycles of 5-day dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) exposures, with a break of 7 to 11 days between each cycle. After the first cycle of DSS exposure, the mice were fed gavagely with water containing 100 nm polystyrene nanobeads (PS-NPs, at concentrations of 1 mg/kg·BW, 5 mg/kg·BW and 25 mg/kg·BW, respectively) for 28 consecutive days. The results demonstrated that cyclic administration of DSS induced chronic inflammation in mice, while the standard drug "5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA)" treatment partially improved colitis manifestations. PS-NPs exacerbated intestinal inflammation in mice with chronic colitis by activating the MAPK signaling pathway. Furthermore, PS-NPs aggravated inflammation, oxidative stress, as well as hepatic lipid metabolism disturbance in the liver of mice with chronic colitis. CONCLUSION: PS-NPs exacerbate intestinal inflammation and injury in mice with chronic colitis. This finding highlights chronically ill populations' susceptibility to environmental hazards, which urgent more research and risk assessment studies.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of nanoparticles on gouty arthritis, and to provide evidence for the preclinical application of nanoparticles in gouty arthritis and ideas for nanomedicine improvement for nanoparticle researchers. METHODS: Five databases including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were searched for eligible studies until April 2022. The quality of the selected studies was assessed by SYRCLE's risk of bias (RoB) tool, and the random-effects model was used to calculate the overall effect sizes of weighted mean differences (WMD). RESULTS: Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. Results showed that nanoparticles were effective in reducing uric acid levels (WMD: -4.91; 95% confidence interval (CI): - 5.41 to - 4.41; p < 0.001), but were not better than allopurinol (WMD: -0.20; 95% CI: - 0.42 to 0.02; p = 0.099). It was worth noting that the nanoparticles were safer than allopurinol. Subgroup analyses indicated that nanoparticle encapsulated substance, animal species, nanoparticle dosage, animal quantity, and animal gender were all sources of heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: The nanoparticles are safe medications for gouty arthritis which can effectively reduce uric acid levels in rodents. Although the results are still uncertain, it is expected to have certain clinical application value. The nanoparticles may be the preclinical medications for gouty arthritis in the future.

BACKGROUND: HER2-low breast cancers were reported to have distinct clinicopathological characteristics from HER2-zero; however, the difference in their genetic features remains unclear. This study investigated the clinical and molecular features of breast tumors according to HER2 status. METHODS: We analyzed the clinicopathological and genomic data of 523 Chinese women with breast cancer. Genomic data was generated by targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) of breast tumor samples using a commercial 520 gene panel. The cohort was stratified according to HER2 status as HER2-zero (n = 90), HER2-low (n = 231), and HER2-positive (n = 202) according to their immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization results. RESULTS: HER2-low breast tumors were enriched with hormone receptor-positive tumors, and who had lower Ki67 expression levels. Genes were differentially mutated across HER2 subgroups. HER2-low tumors had significantly more mutations involved in PI3K-Akt signaling than HER2-positive (p < 0.001) and HER2-zero breast tumors (p < 0.01). HER2-zero tumors had more mutations in checkpoint factors (p < 0.01), Fanconi anemia (p < 0.05), and p53 signaling and cell cycle pathway (p < 0.05) compared to HER2-low breast tumors. Compared with HER2-zero tumors, HER2-low tumors had significantly lower pathological complete response rates after neoadjuvant therapy (15.9% vs. 37.5%, p = 0.042) and proportion of relapsed/progressed patients across follow-up time points (p = 0.031), but had comparable disease-free survival (p = 0.271). CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate the distinct clinical and molecular features and clinical outcomes of HER2-low breast tumors.

Boosting reversible solid-liquid phase transformation from lithium polysulfides to Li2 S and suppressing the shuttling of lithium polysulfides from the cathode to the lithium anode are critical challenges in lithium-sulfur batteries. Here, sulfiphilic single atomic cobalt implanted in lithiophilic heteroatoms-dopped carbon (SACo@HC) matrix with a CoN3 S structure for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries is reported. Density functional theory calculation and in situ experiments demonstrate that the optimal CoN3 S structure in SACo@HC can effectively improve the adsorption and redox conversion efficiency of lithium polysulfides. Consequently, the S-SACo@HC composite with sulfur loading of 80 wt% delivers a high capacity of 1425.1 mAh g-1 at 0.05 C and outstanding rate performance with 745.9 mAh g-1 at 4 C. Furthermore, a capacity of 680.8 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C with a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (6 µL mg-1 ) can be achieved even after 300 cycles. With the harsh conditions of lean electrolyte (E/S = 4 µL mg-1 ) and high sulfur loading (5.4 mg cm-2 ), a superior area capacity of 5.8 mAh cm-2 can be obtained. This work contributes to building a profound understanding of the adsorption and interface engineering of lithium polysulfides and provides ideas to tackle the long-standing polysulfide shuttle problem of lithium-sulfur batteries.

Traditional free-space laser communication systems use beacon and signal lights for target detection and alignment. However, these approaches are inaccurate owing to signal dispersion errors. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a new method using transient radio frequency (RF) signals to achieve highly accurate target detection and alignment. To validate the feasibility of our proposed method, we built an experimental multi-target space-laser communication system based on a rotating double prism and applied it to achieve multi-target space-laser communication. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method to capture multi-target positions in the field of view using wireless RF signals and a rotating double prism. In addition, we show that the system is capable of rapid scanning and accurate pointing as well as establishing a one-way stable communication with multiple targets. When the target is 36 cm away, the pointing accuracy of the system motor is less than 0.8°, the pointing time is 1.2 s, and the average pointing lateral error is 0.666 mm.

Silicon based optoelectronic integrated optical phased array is attractive owing to large-dense integration, large scanning range and CMOS compatibility. In this paper, we design and fabricate a SiN-on-SOI two-dimensional optical phased array chip. We demonstrate a two-dimensional scanning range of 96°×14.4° and 690 mW peak power of the main lobe. Additionally, we set up the time of flight (ToF) and frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) ranging systems by using this optical phased array chip, and achieve the objects detection at the range of 20 m in the ToF system and 109 m in the FMCW system, respectively.

Guava (Psidium guajava) is an important fleshy-fruited tree of the Myrtaceae family that is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas of the world and has attracted considerable attention for the richness of ascorbic acid in its fruits. However, studies on the evolution and genetic breeding potential of guava are hindered by the lack of a reference genome. Here, we present a chromosome-level genomic assembly of guava using PacBio sequencing and Hi-C technology. We found that the genome assembly size was 443.8 Mb with a contig N50 of ~15.8 Mb. We annotated a total of 25 601 genes and 193.2 Mb of repetitive sequences for this genome. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that guava has undergone a recent whole-genome duplication (WGD) event shared by all species in Myrtaceae. In addition, through metabolic analysis, we determined that the L-galactose pathway plays a major role in ascorbic acid biosynthesis in guava fruits. Moreover, the softening of fruits of guava may result from both starch and cell wall degradation according to analyses of gene expression profiles and positively selected genes. Our data provide a foundational resource to support molecular breeding of guava and represent new insights into the evolution of soft, fleshy fruits in Myrtaceae.

Two novel waveguide gratings for optical phased array transmitters are investigated. By offsetting the grating structures along the waveguide on the upper and lower surfaces of the silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide, the dual-level chain and dual-level fishbone structures can achieve 95% of unidirectional radiation with a single Si3N4 layer by design. With apodized perturbation along the gratings, both structures can achieve uniform radiation without compromising the unidirectional radiation performance. In experiment, both demonstrate ∼ 80-90% unidirectionality. With further analysis, it is found that the dual-level fishbone structure is more feasible and robust to process variations in uniform radiation.

To address the problem of traditional surface illuminated detectors being of low responsivity, this work proposes a large-size interdigitated "finger-type" germanium-on-silicon (Ge-on-Si) photodetector (PD) based on the surface illumination approach. For 1550 nm light with a surface incident power of -20 dBm at room temperature, the best responsivity of the PD achieved is ∼0.64 A/W at 0.5 V. At the same time, the optimal bandwidth reaches 1.537 MHz with 3.5 V applied voltage. In order to suppress the dark current induced noise, a Ge-on-Si avalanche photodiode (APD) with the interdigitated structure is designed. The avalanche voltage is designed ∼13.3 V at room temperature, and the dark current density in linear region is at mA/cm2 order. We believe this type of device can be applied in weak light detection condition.

The optical power handling of an OPA scanning beam determines its targeted detection distance. So far, a limited number of investigations have been conducted on the restriction of the beam power. To the best of our knowledge, we for the first time in this paper explore the ability of the silicon photonics based OPA circuit for the high power application. A 64-channel SiN-Si based one-dimensional (1D) OPA chip has been designed to handle high beam power to achieve large scanning range. The chip was fabricated on the standard silicon photonics platform. The main lobe power of our chip can reach 720 mW and its peak side-lobe level (PSLL) is -10.33 dB. We obtain a wide scanning range of 110° in the horizontal direction at 1550 nm wavelength, with a compressed longitudinal divergence angle of each scanning beam of 0.02°.

Catalysts containing isolated single atoms have attracted much interest due to their good catalytic behavior, bridging the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we report an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst that consists of atomically dispersed single copper sites confined by defective mixed-phased TiO2-x. This synergistic catalyst was produced by introducing Cu2+ to a metal organic framework (MOF) using the Mannich reaction, occurring between the carbonyl group in Cu(acac)2 and the amino group on the skeleton of the MOF. The embedding of single copper atoms was confirmed by atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Electronic structure modulation of the single copper sites coupling with oxygen vacancies was further established by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Significantly enhanced ORR activity and stability were achieved on this special Cu single site. The promising application of this novel electrocatalyst was demonstrated in a prototype Zn-air battery. This strategy of the stabilization of single-atom active sites by optimization of the atomic and electronic structure on a mixed matrix support sheds light on the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted tremendous attention as potential electrical energy storage systems due to the special merit of abundant resources and low cost of potassium. However, one critical barrier to achieve practical application of PIBs has been the lack of suitable electrode materials. Here, a novel flexible membrane consisting of N, P codoped carbon nanofibers decorated with MoP ultrafine nanoparticles (MoP@NPCNFs) is fabricated via a simple electrospinning method combined with the later carbonization and phosphorization process. The 3D porous CNF structure in the as-synthesized composite can shorten the transport pathways of K-ions and improve the conductivity of electrons. The ultrafine MoP nanoparticles can guarantee high specific capacity and the N, P co-doping could improve wettability of electrodes to electrolytes. As expected, the free-standing MoP@NPCNF electrode demonstrates a high capacity of 320 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 , a superior rate capability maintaining 220 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 , as well as a capacity retention of more than 90% even after 200 cycles. The excellent rate performance, high reversible capacity, long-term cycling stability, and facile synthesis routine make this hybrid membrane promising anode for potassium-ion batteries.

This clinical observation aims to observe and analyze the effect of Yaotongning capsule in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation, and provide valuable guidance for clinical practice. A total of 120 patients who confirmed with lumbar disc herniation in our hospital from January 2016 to December 2018 were enrolled as research objects in this study. On the other hand, another 120 patients who were treated for lumbar disc herniation in our hospital during the same period were classified in the control group. General routine treatment mode was adopted for the control group, while Yaotongning capsule was given to the study group on the basis of general routine treatment. The therapeutic effect was observed and compared between the two groups. The overall treatment efficiency, VAS score, serum cytokine levels and quality of life were compared between the two groups. The results showed the study group exhibited significant improvement compared with control group, p<0.05. The application of Yaotongning capsule can achieve markedly good results in treatment of lumbar disc herniation, which is worthy of popularization and application.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease with high morbidity, but there is still no definitive treatment for it. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been confirmed to play key roles in OA progression. This work was done to investigate the roles and action mechanism of lncRNA TNFSF10 in OA. The messenger RNA levels of TNFSF10 in articular cartilage samples from patients or chondrocytes were detected by Quantitative real-time PCR assay (qRT-PCR). The effects of TNFSF10 on chondrocytes were evaluated on the basis of cell growth, apoptosis, and inflammation. Then, the interaction between TNFSF10 and miR-376-3p was explored by dual-luciferase reporter test, RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation, and RNA pull-down assay. Finally, various cell experiments, Western blot analysis, and qRT-PCR were performed to study the interaction among TNFSF10, miR-376-3p, and fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1). It was found that TNFSF10 was upregulated in OA cartilages and stimulated cell proliferation, antiapoptosis, and inflammation for chondrocytes. In addition, TNFSF10 acted as a competing endogenous RNA to downregulate miR-376-3p, and the influence of TNFSF10 on chondrocytes was partly reversed by miR-376-3p. Moreover, FGFR1, as a target of miR-376-3p, had reversal functions on the outcomes mediated by miR-376-3p. The further analysis displayed that there was a negative relationship between TNFSF10 and miR-376-3p as well as miR-376-3p and FGFR1, while FGFR1 was positively related with TNFSF10. Altogether, TNFSF10 overexpression probably stimulated proliferation and inflammation, and inhibited apoptosis by regulating the miR-376-3p/FGFR1 axis, implying that its increase contributed to OA progression. Our study provided a new potential biomarker or therapeutic target-TNFSF10, which was helpful to develop an efficient approach to cure OA.

Radicals are inevitable intermediates during the charging and discharging of organic redox electrodes. The increase of the reactivity of the radical intermediates is desirable to maximize the capacity and enhance the rate capability but is detrimental to cycling stability. Therefore, it is a great challenge to controllably balance the redox reactivity and stability of radical intermediates to optimize the electrochemical properties with a good combination of high specific capacity, excellent rate capability, and long-term cycle life. Herein, we reported the redox and tunable stability of radical intermediates in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) considered as high capacity and stable anode for sodium-ion batteries. The comprehensive characterizations combined with theoretical simulation confirmed that the redox of C-O· and α-C radical intermediates play an important role in the sodiation/desodiation process. Specifically, the stacking behavior could be feasibly tuned by the thickness of 2D COFs, essentially determining the redox reactivity and stability of the α-C radical intermediates and their contributive capacity. The modulation of reversible redox chemistry and stabilization mechanism of radical intermediates in COFs offers a novel entry to design novel high performance organic electrode materials for energy storage and conversion.

We propose a pattern-search-like algorithm to design an aperiodic optical phased array for extensive applications in light detection and ranging and free-space communication. The designed phased array with 128 isotropic elements achieves a scan range, peak side-lobe level, minimum beam width, and mean pitch of ± 82°, -14.34 dB, 0.062°, and 9.75 µm, respectively. To our knowledge, it has the widest steering range, narrowest divergence, and largest mean pitch for the same waveguide number. The minimum pitch can be greater than 2.67λ to avoid cross-coupling. The calculated relationship between the machine error and side-lobe level indicates that the designed structure has a higher error tolerance than its uniformly spaced counterpart.

To observe and analyze the clinical effect of cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection in treatment of nerve-root type cervical spondylosis. 120 patients who have been accepted by our hospital for nerve-root type cervical spondylosis were selected as research objects. They were randomly divided into a research group and a control group, each containing 60 patients. The control group was applied with glucocorticoid nerve block therapy, while the research group was treated by cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection. The total therapeutic response rates of two groups were compared. The total therapeutic response rate of the research group was relatively higher,P<0.05. Through comparing various clinical effect scores between two groups, the research group also had advantages over control group, P<0.05. The treatment satisfaction degree of the research group was also higher than that of control group, P<0.05. The application of cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection can achieve better medical results and achieve higher treatment satisfaction degree.

The aim of the stuy was to observe and analyze the effect of glucosamine hydrochloride tablets on patients with cervical spondylosis. This study was conducted on 130 patients diagnosed with cervical spondylosis who were treated in our hospital. The time period was from June 2015 to December 2017. The subjects were randomly divided into a reference group treated with cervical vertebra exercises and cervical occipital belt traction therapy and the study group was further treated with glucosamine hydrochloride tablets. The treatment efficacy of both groups was observed. Comparison of the overall treatment efficiency of patients showed that compared with the reference group, the study group has more significant advantages, P<0.05; comparison of the overall patient satisfaction rate showed that the study group was also superior to the reference group, P<0.05; In addition, statistical analysis of adverse reactions showed no statistically significant difference, P<0.05. The treatment of glucosamine hydrochloride tablets in patients with cervical spondylosis can achieve ideal results, improve the overall treatment efficiency, and thus, has important application significance.

RESUMEN

In this study, an evaporative vapor-phase polymerization approach was employed to fabricate vertically aligned poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanofibers on the surface of carbon cloth (CC). Optimized reaction conditions can obtain well distributed and uniform layers of high-aspect-ratio PEDOT nanofibers on CC. The hierarchical PEDOT/CC structure as a freestanding electrode exhibits good electrochemical properties. As a flexible symmetric supercapacitor, the PEDOT/CC hybrid electrode displays a specific areal capacitance of 201.4 mF cm(-2) at 1 mA cm(-2), good flexibility with a higher value (204.6 mF cm(-2)) in the bending state, and a good cycling stability of 92.4% after 1000 cycles. Moreover, the device shows a maximum energy density of 4.0 Wh kg(-1) (with a power density of 3.2 kW kg(-1)) and a maximum power density of 4.2 kW kg(-1) (with an energy density of 3.1 Wh kg(-1)). The results demonstrate that PEDOT may be a promising material for storage devices through a simple and efficient vapor-phase polymerization process with precisely controlled reaction conditions.
