RESUMEN

In recent decades, the prevalence of myopia has been on the rise globally, attributed to changes in living environments and lifestyles. This increase in myopia has become a significant public health concern. High myopia can result in thinning of the sclera and localized ectasia of the posterior sclera, which is the primary risk factor for various eye diseases and significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Therefore, it is essential to explore effective prevention strategies and programs for individuals with myopia. Collagen serves as the principal molecule in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of scleral tissue, consisting of irregular collagen fibrils. Collagen plays a crucial role in myopia progression and control. During the development of myopia, the sclera undergoes a thinning process which is primarily influenced by collagen expression decreased and remodeled, thus leading to a decrease in its biomechanical properties. Improving collagen expression and promoting collagen crosslinking can slow down the progression of myopia. In light of the above, improving collagen expression or enhancing the mechanical properties of collagen fibers via medication or surgery represents a promising approach to control myopia.

Understanding how to increase soybean yield is crucial for global food security. The genetic and epigenetic factors influencing seed size, a major crop yield determinant, are not fully understood. We explore the role of DNA demethylase GmDMEa in soybean seed size. Our research indicates that GmDMEa negatively correlates with soybean seed size. Using CRISPR-Cas9, we edited GmDMEa in the Dongnong soybean cultivar, known for small seeds. Modified plants had larger seeds and greater yields without altering plant architecture or seed nutrition. GmDMEa preferentially demethylates AT-rich transposable elements, thus activating genes and transcription factors associated with the abscisic acid pathway, which typically decreases seed size. Chromosomal substitution lines confirm that these modifications are inheritable, suggesting a stable epigenetic method to boost seed size in future breeding. Our findings provide insights into epigenetic seed size control and suggest a strategy for improving crop yields through the epigenetic regulation of crucial genes. This work implies that targeted epigenetic modification has practical agricultural applications, potentially enhancing food production without compromising crop quality.

As one of the mechanisms that are supposed to explain the evolution of cooperation among unrelated individuals, costly punishment, in which altruistic individuals privately bear the cost to punish defection, suffers from such drawbacks as decreasing individuals' welfare, inducing second-order free riding, the difficulty of catching defection, and the possibility of triggering retaliation. To improve this promising mechanism, here we propose an extended Public Goods game with rare but severe concerted punishment, in which once a defector is caught punishment is triggered and the cost of punishment is equally shared among the remainder of the group. Analytical results show that, when the probability for concerted punishment is above a threshold, cooperating is, while defecting is not, an evolutionarily stable strategy in finite populations, and that this way of punishment can considerably decrease the total cost of inhibiting defection, especially in large populations.
