RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical and electrographic characteristics of seizures in LGI1-antibody encephalitis. METHODS: The methods utilized in this study were prospective analysis of the clinical manifestations, types of seizures, electroencephalogram (EEG), adjuvant examination, treatment and prognosis of 19 cases of LGI1-antibody encephalitis diagnosed from January 2017 to February 2018 in First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, and reviewed related literatures. RESULTS: The 15/19 (79%) patients were male, and the average onset age was 58 years (23-82). The following cases were observed: 17 (89%) with epilepsy seizures, 14 (73%) with mental disorders, and 13 (68%) with cognitive impairment. Types of epilepsy were including focal aware seizures, focal-impaired awareness seizures, focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures, and status epilepticus. The motor events were most commonly clonus or automatisms, and the sensory events were frequently body shuddering. The 13 patients had faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS); the median frequency was 48 per day (range 5-180). In some video-EEGs, multifocal ictal epileptiform discharges from frontal, temporal, and apical regions, and interictal slow wave activity were observed in patients. Normal EEG appeared in all patients during FBDS. Five patients had hyponatremia, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results of 5 cases were abnormal. All patients were treated with antiepileptic drugs and immunotherapy, and their clinical symptoms were improved. During the follow-up period, 13 patients recovered basically, and 6 patients relapsed. One patient died of status epilepticus after relapse. CONCLUSIONS: Faciobrachial dystonic seizure and various types of epileptic seizures are characteristic manifestations of LGI1-antibody encephalitis, which can assist in early diagnosis. Once this has been diagnosed, antiepileptic drugs and immunotherapy should be given as soon as possible to the patient.

RESUMEN

AIMS: The aims of this study were to investigate the clinical effects and safety of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) in treating trigeminal neuralgia and its influences on accompanied depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and quality of life. METHODS AND MATERIAL: Eighty-seven patients with one-branch classical trigeminal neuralgia were injected with BTX-A in the pain area. The visual analogic scale score, sleep interference score, Hamilton Anxiety Scale score, Hamilton Depression Scale score, and side effects were assessed at 1 week prior to and 8 weeks after treatment, respectively. RESULTS: The effective rates after 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks of treatment were 48.28%, 66.67%, 78.16%, and 80.46%, respectively. The effective rates of anxiety and depression were 90.32% and 96.77%, respectively. When compared to that before treatment, the quality of life was significantly better in terms of role-physical, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, role-emotional, and mental health (all P < 0.01), while physical function was not significantly improved (P = 0.317). CONCLUSION: BTX-A treatment can significantly relieve the pain in trigeminal neuralgia patients; improve anxiety, depression, and sleep; and increase the quality of life. BTX-A treatment is a safe and effective method to treat classical trigeminal neuralgia.

RESUMEN

Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headaches with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) is a rare headache syndrome which belongs to trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. Though the majority of SUNCT syndrome is idiopathic, more and more cases of secondary SUNCT syndrome have been reported recently. In this study, we present a case of symptomatic SUNCT syndrome caused by acute dorsolateral medullary infarction which was verified by brain MRI(magnetic resonance imaging). Up to now, there is not absolutely effective treatment for SUNCT syndrome. However, in our case, SUNCT was completely resolved after conventional treatment for cerebral infarction without specific drug intervention.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We investigated the long-term effects and safety of botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) for treating trigeminal neuralgia (TN). We also studied long-term maintenance of this therapeutic effect. METHODS: A visual analog scale (VAS) score, pain attack frequency per day, patient's overall response to treatment and side effects during 14-month follow-up were evaluated in 88 patients with TN receiving BTX-A. The primary endpoints were pain severity (assessed by VAS) and pain attack frequency per day. The secondary endpoint was the patient's overall response to treatment, assessed using the Patient Global Impression of Change. The influence of different doses (≤50, 50-100 and ≥100 U) on the therapeutic effect was evaluated. RESULTS: Treatment was deemed "effective" within 1 month in 81 patients and at 2 months in 88 patients (100%). The shortest period of effective treatment was 3 months, and complete control of pain was observed in a maximum of 46 patients. The therapeutic effect decreased gradually after 3 months, and the prevalence of effective treatment at 14 months was 38.6%, with complete control of pain seen in 22 patients (25%). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of effective treatment between different dose groups at identical time points (p > 0.05). Three patients showed swelling at injection sites and 10 patients showed facial asymmetry, both of which disappeared spontaneously without special treatment. CONCLUSION: Local subcutaneous injection of BTX-A for TN treatment has considerable therapeutic effects lasting several months and is safe for this indication. At least one-quarter of patients maintained complete analgesia. The maintenance period of the therapeutic effect may be related to the reduction in the VAS score after the first injection of BTX-A.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Variants in NEXMIF had been reported associated with intellectual disability (ID) without epilepsy or developmental epileptic encephalopathy (DEE). It is unkown whether NEXMIF variants are associated with epilepsy without ID. This study aims to explore the phenotypic spectrum of NEXMIF and the genotype-phenotype correlations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Trio-based whole-exome sequencing was performed in patients with epilepsy. Previously reported NEXMIF variants were systematically reviewed to analyze the genotype-phenotype correlations. RESULTS: Six variants were identified in seven unrelated cases with epilepsy, including two de novo null variants and four hemizygous missense variants. The two de novo variants were absent in all populations of gnomAD and four hemizygous missense variants were absent in male controls of gnomAD. The two patients with de novo null variants exhibited severe developmental epileptic encephalopathy. While, the patients with hemizygous missense variants had mild focal epilepsy with favorable outcome. Analysis of previously reported cases revealed that males with missense variants presented significantly higher percentage of normal intellectual development and later onset age of seizure than those with null variants, indicating a genotype-phenotype correlation. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that NEXMIF variants were potentially associated with pure epilepsy with or without intellectual disability. The spectrum of epileptic phenotypes ranged from the mild epilepsy to severe developmental epileptic encephalopathy, where the epileptic phenotypes variability are potentially associated with patients' gender and variant type.

RESUMEN

AIM: To investigate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of intradermal and/or submucosal administration of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) for patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN). METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 42 TN patients were randomly allocated into two groups, namely, intradermal and/or submucosal injection of BTX-A (75 U/1.5 mL; n = 22) or saline (1.5 mL; n = 20) in the skin and/or mucosa where pain was experienced. The primary endpoints were pain severity (assessed by the visual analogue scale) and pain attack frequency per day. The secondary endpoint was the patient's overall response to treatment, assessed using the Patient Global Impression of Change scale. Patients with ≥ 50% reduction in mean pain score at week 12 were defined as responders. RESULTS: A total of 40 patients completed the study. BTX-A significantly reduced pain intensity at week 2 and pain attack frequency at week 1. The efficacy was maintained throughout the course of the study. More BTX-A treated patients reported that pain had improved by the end of the study. Significantly more responders were present in the BTX-A group (68.18%) than in the placebo group (15.00%). BTX-A was well tolerated, with few treatment-related adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: BTX-A may be an efficient, safe and novel strategy for TN treatment.

RESUMEN

P2Y purinoceptor 2 (P2RY2) is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of P2RY2 on cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and its molecular mechanism. Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model in rats and OXYGEN and oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model in PC12 cells were established. P2RY2 expressions in I/R injury model in vitro and in vivo were up-regulated. In the OGD/R group, ROS level, cyto-CytC and mitochondrial fission factors expressions and cell apoptosis were increased, while SOD activity, mito-CytC and mitochondrial fusion factors expressions were decreased. P2RY2 overexpression could reverse these results. Up-regulated P2RY2 expression decreased Yes-associated protein (YAP) phosphorylation level, promote the nuclear translocation of YAP, and inhibit cell apoptosis, which can be reversed by YAP inhibitor verteporfin. The addition of PI3K/AKT inhibitor LY294002 could reverse the decrease of YAP phosphorylation level and cell apoptosis, and the increase of nuclear translocation caused by P2RY2 overexpression. Further in vivo studies validated that interference with P2RY2 increased the cerebral infarction area, decreased AKT expression, enhanced YAP phosphorylation, and inhibited the nuclear translocation of YAP. In conclusion, P2RY2 can alleviate cerebral I/R injury by inhibiting YAP phosphorylation and reducing mitochondrial fission.

RESUMEN

Inflammation is a key component of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and we have examined the effect of two polymorphisms (-174G/C and -572C/G) in the promoter of the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene on risk of AD in 318 AD patients. Significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies of -572C/G IL-6 promoter polymorphism were observed between AD patients and controls. The GG genotype was associated with a decreased risk of developing AD (OR 0.423, 95% CI 0.200-0.894). Similarly, logistic regression analysis revealed that G allele was a protective factor for AD (OR 0.732, 95% CI 0.567-0.945). For -174G/C variability, no C variability was found in all the subjects. The frequency of the IL-6 -174G/C promoter polymorphism is very low or no variability in Henan Han population. The -572C/G polymorphism of IL-6 gene promoter region is associated with AD, and G allele is an independent protective factor for AD.

RESUMEN

Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by distinctive neuropathological changes. Recently, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have become a key area of interest due to their potential in AD therapy. Hence, the aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of lncRNA SOX21-AS1 on neuronal oxidative stress injury in mice with AD via the Wnt signaling pathway by targeting FZD3/5. Microarray analysis was performed to screen AD-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Following verification of the target relationship between SOX21-AS1 and FZD3/5, the contents of OH-, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were determined, with the expressions of SOX21-AS1, FZD3/5, ß-catenin, cyclin D1, and 4-HNE in hippocampal neuron cells subsequently detected. Cell cycle distribution and apoptosis were evaluated. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that SOX21-AS1 was upregulated in AD, while highlighting the co-expression of SOX21-AS1 and FZD3/5 genes and their involvement in the Wnt signaling pathway. AD mice exhibited diminished memory and learning ability, increased rates of MDA, OH-, SOX21-AS1, 4-HNE, and elevated levels of hippocampal neuron cell apoptosis, accompanied by decreased levels of SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, FZD3/5, ß-catenin, and cyclin D1. Silencing of SOX21-AS1 resulted in decreased OH-, MDA contents, SOX21-AS1, and 4-HNE, and increased SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, FZD3/5, ß-catenin, and cyclin D1, as well as reduced apoptosis of hippocampal neuron cells. Taken together, the key findings of the present study demonstrated that silencing of lncRNA SOX21-AS1 could act to alleviate neuronal oxidative stress and suppress neuronal apoptosis in AD mice through the upregulation of FZD3/5 and subsequent activation of the Wnt signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

Numerous long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified as aberrantly expressed in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, limited knowledge is available concerning the roles of dysregulated lncRNAs and the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism in the pathological process of PD. In this study, we found that lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 1 (SNHG1) and seven in absentia homolog 1 (SIAH1) were upregulated, but microRNA-15b-5p (miR-15b-5p) was downregulated in SH-SY5Y cells pretreated with MPP+, as well as in MPTP-induced mouse model of PD. Overexpression of SIAH1 enhanced cellular toxicity of α-synuclein in SH-SY5Y cells, as indicated by the reduction of cell viability and elevation of LDH release. The percentage of α-synuclein aggregate-positive cells and the number of α-synuclein aggregates per cell were increased in SH-SY5Y cells transfected with pcDNA-SIAH1, while decreased after transfection with short interfering RNA specific for SIAH1 (si-SIAH1). Bioinformatics and luciferase reporter assay revealed that SIAH1 was a direct target of miR-15b-5p. We also found that SNHG1 could directly bind to miR-15-5p and repress miR-15-5p expression. Upregulation of miR-15b-5p alleviated α-synuclein aggregation and apoptosis by targeting SIAH1 in SH-SY5Y cells overexpressing α-synuclein. Overexpression of SNHG1 enhanced, whereas SNHG1 knockdown inhibited α-synuclein aggregation and α-synuclein-induced apoptosis. Moreover, the neuroprotective effect of si-SNHG1 was abrogated by downregulation of miR-15b-5p. In summary, our data suggest that SNHG1, as a pathogenic factor, promotes α-synuclein aggregation and toxicity by targeting the miR-15b-5p/SIAH1 axis, contributing to a better understanding of the mechanisms of Lewy body formation and loss of dopaminergic neurons in PD.

RESUMEN

Miyoshi myopathy (MM) is an autosomal recessive distal muscular dystrophy caused by mutations in the dysferlin gene (DYSF), a 150-kb gene on chromosome 2p13 that contains 55 coding exons. Many patients with MM harbour mutations in the DYSF gene, and most of these mutations are inherited from the patients' parents. Recently, we encountered novel, de novo mutations in the DYSF gene in a patient with MM. DYSF gene analysis was performed by targeted next-generation sequencing, and we found that the patient had compound heterozygous mutations, including a de novo mutation (c.613C > T) in exon 6 and a novel missense mutation (c.968T > C) in exon 11. The novel missense mutation, predicted to be a disease-causing mutation or affecting protein function by MutationTaster and Polyphen2, confirmed the diagnosis. These findings provide important insights into the pathogenesis and inheritance of MM.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in the early phase on the atherosclerosis and the level of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1(PAI-1). METHODS: Twenty-eight rabbits were randomly assigned to 4 groups: Group A, sham operation (n=7); Group B, ovariectomized without estradiol (n=7); Group C, ovariectomized with low-dose estradiol (n=7); and Group D, ovariectomized with high-dose estradiol (n=7). All rabbits were given 1% cholesterol diet for 12 weeks. Levels of blood lipid, estradiol, and PAI-1 were measured before the operation and at the end of the 4th and 12th weeks. Twelve weeks later, we took the aortas for pathological analysis and calculated the areas of atherosclerotic plaque. RESULTS: After 12 weeks, the estradiol level of Group B was significantly lower than that of Group A, and that of Group D was obviously higher than Group A. There was no significant difference between Group C and A. The concentrations of total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in Group B significantly increased compared with Group A (P<0.01). The levels of TC and LDL-C of Group C and D were significantly lower than those of Group A. Whereas the concentrations of triglyceride (TG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in Group B were lower than those of Groups A, C and D (P<0.01). In contrast to Groups A, C and D, the level of PAI-1 was significantly higher in the Group B (P<0.01), without significant differences among Groups A, C and D. The area of atherosclerotic lesion of aorta in Group B was significantly bigger than that of Group A, C and D. The areas of aortic atherosclerotic plaque in Group C and D were obviously smaller than those of Group A (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Transdermal estrogen replacement therapy in the early phase can improve the metabolism of the serum lipids, reduce the level of PAI-1, and probably provide the protective effect on the atheroma formation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To validate our speculation that curcumin may ameliorate Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis by regulating PI(3,5)P2 and transient receptor potential mucolipin-1 (TRPML1) expression levels. METHODS: We developed an animal model presenting AD by APP/PS1 transgenes. The mouse clonal hippocampal neuronal cell line HT-22 was treated with amyloid-ß1-42 (Aß1-42). Curcumin was administrated both in vivo and in vitro. MTS assay was used to detect cell viability, and the lysosomal [Ca2+] ion concentration was detected. The number of autophagosomes was detected by the transmission electron microscopic examination. Illumina RNA-seq was used to analyze the different expression patterns between Aß1-42-treated cells without and with curcumin treatment. The protein level was analyzed by the Western blotting analysis. PI(3,5)P2 or TRPML1 was knocked down in HT-22 cells or in APP/PS1 transgenic mice. Morris water maze and recognition task were performed to trace the cognitive ability. RESULTS: Curcumin increased cell viability, decreased the number of autophagosomes, and increased lysosomal Ca2+ levels in Aß1-42-treated HT-22 cells. Sequencing analysis identified TRPLML1 as the most significantly upregulated gene after curcumin treatment. Western blotting results also showed that TRPML1 was upregulated and mTOR/S6K signaling pathway was activated and markers of the autophagy-lysosomal system were downregulated after curcumin use in Aß1-42-treated HT-22 cells. Knockdown of PI (3,5)P2 or TRPML1 increased the protein levels of markers of the autophagy-lysosomal system after curcumin use in Aß1-42-treated HT-22 cells, inhibited mTOR/S6K signaling pathway, increased the protein levels of markers of the autophagy-lysosomal system after curcumin use in APP/PS1 mice. Besides, knockdown of PI(3,5)P2 or TRPML1 reversed the protective role of curcumin on memory and recognition impairments in mice with APP/PS1 transgenes. CONCLUSION: To some extent, it suggested that the effects of curcumin on AD pathogenesis were, at least partially, associated with PI(3,5)P2 and TRPML1 expression levels.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to examine whether the circulating CXC chemokine ligand-12 (CXCL12) level can predict a 6-month outcome in Chinese patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). In a prospective study, CXCL12 levels were measured on admission in the serum of 304 consecutive patients with AIS. The prognostic value of CXCL12 to predict the functional outcome and mortality within 1 year was compared with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score and with other known outcome predictors. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the accuracy of serum CXCL12 in predicting functional outcome and mortality. Patients with an unfavorable outcome and non-survivors had significantly increased CXCL12 levels on admission (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for common risk factors showed that CXCL12 (≥12.4 ng/mL; third quartile) was an independent predictor of functional outcome (odds ratio [OR] = 8.81; 95 % confidence interval [CI] 4.92-24.79) and mortality (OR = 10.15; 95 %CI 2.44-27.98). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of CXCL12 was 0.84 (95 % CI 0.76-0.92) for functional outcome and 0.87 (95 % CI 0.80-0.93) for mortality. Circulating CXCL12 serum levels at admission is a useful and complementary biomarker to predict functional outcome and mortality 6 months after acute ischemic stroke.

RESUMEN

To explore the correlation of aspirin resistance (AR) with clinical stroke severity and infarct volume using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in 224 Chinese ischemic stroke patients who were taking aspirin before stroke onset. In those patients, the median age was 64 years (IQR, 56-75 years), and males accounting for 54.9%(123)of the total subjects. Fifty of 224 enrolled patients (22.3%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 16.9% to 27.7%) showed AR. In the median regression model, significant increase was estimated in NIHSS score of 0.04 point for every 1-point increase in aspirin reaction units (ARU) (95% CI, 0.02 to 0.06; P<0.001). Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI)-measured infarct volume were significantly higher in patients with AR as compared with those with AS [13.21 (interquartile ranges [IQR], 8.51-23.88) vs.4.26 (IQR, 1.74-11.62); P<0.001). Furthermore, a statistically significant increase was also measured in NIHSS score of 0.05 point for every 1-point increase in ARU in the median regression model (95% CI, 0.03 to 0.08; P<0.001). The median DWI infarct volume was significantly larger in the highest ARU quartile when compared to that in the low 3 quartiles (P<0.001). In conclusion, stroke patients with AR indicated higher risk of severe strokes and large infarcts compared to patients in the aspirin-sensitive group.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of Notch-1 signaling in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiating into neurons. METHODS: Mice Notch-1 small hairpin RNA (mNotch-1 shRNA) was constructed and transfected into the MSCs obtained from the tibiae of BALB/c mice. MSCs transfected with glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate hydoxygenase (GADPH) shRNA and untransfected MSCs were used as controls. The cell survival rate was detected by ELISA. The MSCs of different groups were cultured in Neurobasal-A medium so as to be induced to differentiate into neurons. Apoptosis of the MSCs was detected by TUNEL. RESULTS: After induction of 6 days the MSCs transfected with mNotch-1 shRNA displayed typical neuronal morphology and high expression of neuron-specific markers: nestin, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), neurofilament 200 (NF 200), and Notch-1 protein, however, gilal fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), the glia-specific marker, was not detected. The percentage of apoptotic cells in the MSCs transfected with mNotch-1 shRNA was 13.3% +/- 2.3%, significantly higher than those of the MSCs transfected with mGAPH shRNA and untransfected MSCs (4.7% +/- 0.5% and 4.5% +/- 0.4%, both P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Block of the Notch signal pathway may increase the differentiation of MSCs into neurons.

RESUMEN

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a complication of stroke. Our aim was to determine whether D-dimer plasma levels at admission could be a risk factor for DVT in Chinese patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). From December 2012 to November 2014, all patients with first-ever acute ICH were included. At baseline, the demographical and clinical data were taken. These patients were assessed for DVT using color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) on 15 days after ICH and whenever clinically requested. Multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression models. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to test the overall predictive accuracy of D-dimer and other markers. In our study, acute ICH was diagnosed in 265 patients and 210 completed a 15-day follow-up and were included in the analysis. Fifty-four (25.7 %) out of the 210 patients were diagnosed as DVT. Plasma D-dimer levels were significantly higher in ICH patients with DVT as compared to those without DVT (P < 0.0001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for common risk factors showed that plasma D-dimer levels ≥1.20 mg/L were an independent predictor of DVT [odds ratio (OR) = 12.99, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 3.17-32.98; P < 0.0001]. With an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.91 (95 % CI = 0.86-0.94), D-dimer showed a significantly greater discriminatory ability to predict DVT as compared with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) (AUC = 0.77, 95 % CI = 0.70-0.82; P < 0.01), homocysteine (HCY) (AUC = 0.75, 95 % CI = 0.70-0.81; P < 0.01), and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score (AUC = 0.80, 95 % CI = 0.72-0.85; P < 0.01). The present study suggested that elevated D-dimer plasma levels were independent predictors for DVT in Chinese patients with ICH.

RESUMEN

Background. Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) syndrome is an unusual cause of headache, mainly described in older adults, and is rare in children. Pain attacks may be severe, frequent, and prolonged. The therapeutic benefits of many drugs are disappointing. Patient and Methods. A 12-year-old boy suffered severe headache and toothache for 20 days. As treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anticonvulsants, and steroids proved ineffective, he was treated with ipsilateral multisite subcutaneous injections of botulinum toxin A 70 U around the orbit, the temporal area, and the upper gum. Results. The pain had reduced in frequency and severity by the fourth day after treatment and had completely disappeared after 7 days. There were no side effects or recurrence during a subsequent 17-month follow-up period. Conclusion. Botulinum toxin A can be used to treat the first episode of SUNCT in children over the age of 12 years.

RESUMEN

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive decline usually beginning with impairment in the ability to form recent memories. Nonavailability of definitive therapeutic strategy urges developing pharmacological targets based on cell signaling pathways. A great revival of interest in nutraceuticals and adjuvant therapy has been put forward. Tea polyphenols for their multiple health benefits have also attracted the attention of researchers. Tea catechins showed enough potentiality to be used in future as therapeutic targets to provide neuroprotection against AD. This review attempts to present a concise map of different receptor signaling pathways associated with AD with an insight into drug designing based on the proposed signaling pathways, molecular mechanistic details of AD pathogenesis, and a scientific rationale for using tea polyphenols as proposed therapeutic agents in AD.
