A branch of island biogeography has emerged to explain alien species diversity in the light of the biogeographic and anthropogenic context, yet overlooking the functional and phylogenetic facets. Evaluating alien and native birds of 407 oceanic islands worldwide, we built structural equation models to assess the direct and indirect influence of biotic, geographic, and anthropogenic contexts on alien functional diversity (FD) and phylogenetic diversity (PD). We found that alien taxonomic richness was the main predictor of both diversities. Anthropogenic factors, including colonization pressure, associated with classic biogeographical variables also strongly influenced alien FD and PD. Specifically, habitat modification and human connectivity markedly drove alien FD, especially when controlled by taxonomic richness, whereas the human population size, gross domestic product, and native PD were crucial at explaining alien PD. Our findings suggest that humans not only shape taxonomic richness but also other facets of alien diversity in a complex way.

We created a database of lost and rediscovered tetrapod species, identified patterns in their distribution and factors influencing rediscovery. Tetrapod species are being lost at a faster rate than they are being rediscovered, due to slowing rates of rediscovery for amphibians, birds and mammals, and rapid rates of loss for reptiles. Finding lost species and preventing future losses should therefore be a conservation priority. By comparing the taxonomic and spatial distribution of lost and rediscovered tetrapod species, we have identified regions and taxa with many lost species in comparison to those that have been rediscovered-our results may help to prioritise search effort to find them. By identifying factors that influence rediscovery, we have improved our ability to broadly distinguish the types of species that are likely to be found from those that are not (because they are likely to be extinct). Some lost species, particularly those that are small and perceived to be uncharismatic, may have been neglected in terms of conservation effort, and other lost species may be hard to find due to their intrinsic characteristics and the characteristics of the environments they occupy (e.g. nocturnal species, fossorial species and species occupying habitats that are more difficult to survey such as wetlands). These lost species may genuinely await rediscovery. However, other lost species that possess characteristics associated with rediscovery (e.g. large species) and that are also associated with factors that negatively influence rediscovery (e.g. those occupying small islands) are more likely to be extinct. Our results may foster pragmatic search protocols that prioritise lost species likely to still exist.

Invasive Aspergillosis is a high-risk illness with a high death rate in immunocompromised people due to a lack of early detection and timely treatment. Based on immunology study, we achieved an efficient production of anti-galactomannan antibody by Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and applied it to time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay for Aspergillus galactomannan detection. We first introduced dual promoter expression vector into CHO host cells, and then applied a two-step screening strategy to screen the stable cell line by methionine sulfoximine pressurization. After amplification and fermentation, antibody yield reached 4500 mg/L. Then we conjugated the antibodies with fluorescent microspheres to establish a double antibody sandwich time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay, which was compared with the commercial Platelia™ Aspergillus Ag by clinical serum samples. The preformed assay could obtain the results in less than 25 min, with a limit of detection for galactomannan of approximately 1 ng/mL. Clinical results of the two methods showed that the overall percent agreement was 97.7% (95% CI: 96.6%-98.4%) and Cohen's kappa coefficient was 0.94. Overall, the assay is highly consistent with commercial detection, providing a more sensitive and effective method for the rapid diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis.

Since the 20th century, the world has undergone climate change, population growth and population aging, which may result in alterations in the epidemiology of non-optimal temperature-associated strokes. We employed multiple methodologies and data from the global burden of disease 2019 to unveil the long-term curvilinear trends in strokes attributed to non-optimal temperature and the impact of aging and population growth on its changing epidemiology. From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) of strokes attributable to low temperature had been decreasing, but from 2016, the continued downward trend in ASDR disappeared and began to remain stable. On the contrary, the ASDR of strokes attributable to high temperature continued to increase. The high socio-demographic index (SDI) region experienced the fastest decreased trend. The disease burden of stroke attributable to low temperature is increased by aging in 178 countries (87.25%), compared with 130 (63.73%) for high temperature. After excluding aging and population growth, the DALY rate for strokes attributed to high temperature was increasing in 87 countries and territories (42.64%). The disease burden of strokes attributed to low temperature is far greater than that of high temperature in absolute figures. However, globally, there is a significant trend toward an increase in strokes attributed to high temperature. Social development has largely offset the burden of strokes attributed to low temperature, but most regions of the world are equally affected by strokes attributed to high temperature. Simultaneously, in the framework of climate change, aging is also largely hindering stroke prevention efforts.

Understanding the behavior of colloidal phosphorus (Pcoll) under anoxic conditions is pivotal for addressing soil phosphorus (P) mobilization and transport and its impact on nutrient cycling. Our study investigated Pcoll dynamics in acidic floodplain soil during a 30-day flooding event. The sudden oxic-to-anoxic shift led to a significant rise in pore-water Pcoll levels, which exceeded soluble P levels by more than 2.7-fold. Colloidal fractions transitioned from dispersed forms (<220 nm) to colloid-associated microaggregates (>220 nm), as confirmed by electron microscopy. The observed increase in colloidal sizes was paralleled by their heightened ability to form aggregates. Compared to sterile control conditions, anoxia prompted the transformation of initially dispersed colloids into larger particles through microbial activity. Curiously, the 16S rRNA and ITS microbial diversity analysis indicated that fungi were more strongly associated with anoxia-induced colloidal release than bacteria. These microbially induced shifts in Pcoll lead to its higher mobility and transport, with direct implications for P release from soil into floodwaters.

Accurate measurement of serum glycocholic acid (GCA) is crucial for evaluating the activity of chronic hepatitis. Moreover, GCA is a novel identified biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma. Although some laboratories have used the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method to measure GCA in recent years, the problem of potential interference of GCA analogues has not been solved well yet. Neither reference measurement procedures nor reference materials for GCA have been listed in the Joint Committee for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine (JCTLM) database. For standardization of GCA, it is urgent to establish a candidate measurement procedure for GCA. In this study, a candidate reference measurement procedure for the quantification of GCA in human serum based on isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) by a two-step sample pretreatment of protein precipitation and MAX solid-phase extraction was developed and validated. GCA can be completely separated from its structural analogues with gradient elution in 9 min compared with short time gradients published in previous literature by Huang's group. Method validation indicated perfect quantitation precision with intra-day and inter-day values that were ≤1.30% and ≤1.80%, respectively. The method showed excellent linearity with high regression coefficients (R2 > 0.999) over a range of 0.92 ng/g-38.38 µg/g and perfect recoveries at three spiked levels (99.87-100.43%). No interference, matrix effect, and carryover were observed. Moreover, the cRMP was successfully applied to measure GCA in serum samples and compared with two immunoassays in a clinical laboratory. As a candidate reference method, this method can promote a GCA standardization program.

The measurement uncertainty is a crucial quantitative parameter for assessing the reliability of the result. The study aimed to propose a new budget for uncertainty evaluation of a reference measurement procedure for the determination of total testosterone in human serum. The adaptive Monte Carlo method (aMCM) was used for the propagation of probability distributions assigned to various input quantities to determine the uncertainty of the testosterone concentration. The basic principles of the propagation and the statistical analysis were described based on the experimental results of the quality control serum sample. The analysis of the number of Monte Carlo trials was discussed. The procedure of validation of the GUM uncertainty framework using the aMCM was also provided. The number of Monte Carlo trials was 2.974 × 106 when the results had stabilized. The total testosterone concentration was 16.02 nmol/L, and the standard uncertainty was 0.30 nmol/L. The coverage interval at coverage probability of 95% was 15.45 to 16.62 nmol/L, while the probability distribution for testosterone concentration was approximately described by a Gaussian distribution. The validation of results was not passed as the expanded uncertainty result obtained by the aMCM was slightly lower, about 7%, than that by the GUM uncertainty framework with consistent results of the concentration.

BACKGROUND: The disease burden of colorectal cancer in East Asia has been at a high level. However, the epidemiological characteristics of the disease burden in this region have not been systematically studied. METHOD: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 program. Joinpoint analysis was used to identify long-term trends in mortality of colorectal cancer. Independent effects of age, period, and cohort were detected by the age-period-cohort model. The Bayesian age-period-cohort model was performed to predict the burden of colorectal cancer across East Asia by 2030. RESULTS: From 1990 to 2019, the average annual percentage change (AAPC) showed upward trends in mainland China (1.05 [95% confidence interval (CI)], 0.82, 1.28) as well as Taiwan Province of China (1.81 [95% CI], 1.51, 2.10) but downward in Japan (-0.60 [95% CI], -0.70, -0.49) (P < 0.05). Attributable risk factors for colorectal cancer in East Asia remained stable over 30 years, while the risk of metabolic factors is noteworthy in the future. In the next decade, the age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of colorectal cancer in China was predicted to surpass that of Japan and South Korea in expectation. CONCLUSION: The mortality of colorectal cancer is escalating in developing countries, while it is gradually declining in high-income countries across East Asia. Nonetheless, the disease burden of colorectal cancer in high-income countries remains substantial level.

PURPOSE: The utilization of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in studying the mechanisms and treatment of chronic pain has gained significant popularity. However, there is currently a dearth of literature conducting bibliometric analysis on fMRI studies focused on chronic pain. METHODS: All the literature included in this study was obtained from the Science Citation Index Expanded of Web of Science Core Collection. We used CiteSpace and VOSviewer to analyze publications, authors, countries or regions, institutions, journals, references and keywords. Additionally, we evaluated the timeline and burst analysis of keywords, as well as the timeline and burst analysis of references. The search was conducted from 2004 to 2023 and completed within a single day on October 4th, 2023. RESULTS: A total of 1,327 articles were retrieved. The annual publication shows an overall increasing trend. The United States has the highest number of publications and the main contributing institution is Harvard University. The journal PAIN produces the most articles. In recent years, resting-state fMRI, the prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, thalamus, and migraines have been researched hotspots of fMRI studies on chronic pain. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides an in-depth perspective on fMRI for chronic pain research, revealing key points, research hotspots and research trends, which offers valuable ideas for future research activities. It concludes with a summary of advances in clinical practice in this area, pointing out the need for critical evaluation of these findings in the light of guidelines and expert recommendations. It is anticipated that further high-quality research outputs will be generated in the future, which will facilitate the utilization of fMRI in clinical decision-making for chronic pain.

Colloidal phosphorus (P) is an important P form in agricultural runoff and can threaten water quality. However, up to date, there are few effective approaches to mitigate colloidal P pollution. This study investigated the effect of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on medium-colloidal (MC; 220 nm-450 nm) and fine-colloidal (FC; 3 kDa-220 nm) P in agricultural runoff. Under 24 h of UV irradiation, as the most abundant colloidal P fraction, concentration of total P (TP) in FC consistently decreased by 81.0%, while TP concentration in MC first increased by 74.4% after 3 h and then decreased with irradiation time. At the same time, particulate TP (>450 nm) concentration was found to be increased from 0 to 14.7 µM. However, there were no obvious variations in TP concentrations in FC and MC fractions under dark conditions. In FC fraction, with the decrease of TP, the corresponding concentrations of iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si) declined synchronously, and ferric iron/ferrous iron (Fe(III)/Fe(II)) ratio and organic matter (OM) concentration were reduced as well. These results suggested that P in FC fraction was gradually transformed into particulate P during photoreduction of Fe(III) and photodegradation of OM under UV irradiation. Our study helps to understand the mechanism of the phototransformation of colloidal P, and propose an UV irradiation-based approach to remove colloidal P in agricultural runoff.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the disease burden of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) globally, regionally, and in 204 countries by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019, and to explore cross-national inequalities across SDI. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database collected data on KOA worldwide from 1990 to 2019, including prevalence, incidence, years lived with disability (YLDs). The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was used to measure temporal trends. In addition, the inequality slope index and the health concentration index were calculated to quantify the unequal distribution of the burden of KOA across 204 countries worldwide. RESULTS: In 2019, the global age-standardized prevalence rate increased by 7.5% compared with 1990, and the age-standardized incidence rate increased by about 6.2%; The age-standardized YLDs rate increased by about 7.8%. In addition to the Republic of Korea and the United States of America, the disease burden of KOA has increased year by year in other countries around the world. The incidence of KOA was highest at ages 50-59, while the prevalence and rates of YLDs were highest at ages 75-84. The burden of KOA was higher in women than in men. Cross-country inequality suggests that the inequality in the burden of KOA between high SDI and low SDI countries becomes greater, and that countries with high SDI bear a disproportionately high burden. CONCLUSION: The global KOA burden has risen steadily between 1990 and 2019, and cross-national inequality gaps remain large. Targeted measures must therefore be taken to address this inequality and the increasing global KOA disease burden.

BACKGROUND: The disease burden of pancreatic cancer in East Asia is at a high level, but the epidemiological characteristics of pancreatic cancer in the region have not been systematically studied. METHOD: Joinpoint analysis was used to identify average annual percentage change (AAPC) and annual percentage change (APC) in mortality. Age-period-cohort models were used to analyze age-period cohort effects across countries. Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) analysis was used to project the burden of disease for 2020-2030. RESULTS: Pancreatic cancer mortality in males in Japan (2012-2019, APC = -0.97) and Korea (2012-2019, APC = -0.91) has shown a decreasing trend since 2012 (P < .05). However, China (2016-2019, APC = 3.21), Mongolia (2015-2.019, APC = 2.37), and North Korea (2012-2019, APC = 0.47) showed a significant increase in pancreatic cancer in both genders (P < .05). Risk factors for pancreatic cancer in East Asia remained largely stable between 2010 and 2019. Mortality of pancreatic cancer due to smoking began to decline in areas with high socio-demographic index (SDI), and mortality of pancreatic cancer due to high body mass index and high fasting plasma glucose increased with SDI. The age-standardized mortality for pancreatic cancer in Chinese males is expected to exceed that of Japan and South Korea by 2030, but the disease burden of pancreatic cancer in Japan and South Korea remains at extremely high levels. CONCLUSION: Economically developed countries are beginning to show a decreasing trend in the burden of pancreatic cancer disease, and developing countries are experiencing a rapid increase in the age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of pancreatic cancer.

Anthropogenic biological invasions represent major concerns but enable us to investigate rapid evolutionary changes and adaptation to novel environments. The goldfish Carassius auratus with sexual diploids and unisexual triploids coexisting in natural waters is one of the most widespread invasive fishes in Tibet, providing an ideal model to study evolutionary processes during invasion in different reproductive forms from the same vertebrate. Here, using whole-genome resequencing data of 151 C. auratus individuals from invasive and native ranges, we found different patterns of genomic responses between diploid and triploid populations during their invasion of Tibet. For diploids, although invasive individuals derived from two different genetically distinct sources had a relative higher diversity (π) at the population level, their individual genetic diversity (genome-wide observed heterozygosity) was significantly lower (21.4%) than that of source individuals. Population structure analysis revealed that the invasive individuals formed a specific genetic cluster distinct from the source populations. Runs of homozygosity analysis showed low inbreeding only in invasive individuals, and only the invasive population experienced a recent decline in effective population size reflecting founder events. For triploids, however, invasive populations showed no loss of individual genetic diversity and no genetic differentiation relative to source populations. Regions of putative selective sweeps between invasive and source populations of diploids mainly involved genes associated with mannosidase activity and embryo development. Our results suggest that invasive diploids deriving from distinct sources still lost individual genetic diversity resulting from recent inbreeding and founder events and selective sweeps, and invasive triploids experienced no change in genetic diversity owing to their reproduction mode of gynogenesis that precludes inbreeding and founder effects and may make them more powerful invaders.

Shifts between native and alien climatic niches pose a major challenge for predicting biological invasions. This is particularly true for insular species because geophysical barriers could constrain the realization of their fundamental niches, which may lead to underestimates of their invasion potential. To investigate this idea, we estimated the frequency of shifts between native and alien climatic niches and the magnitude of climatic mismatches using 80,148 alien occurrences of 46 endemic insular amphibian, reptile, and bird species. Then, we assessed the influence of nine potential predictors on climatic mismatches across taxa, based on species' characteristics, native range physical characteristics, and alien range properties. We found that climatic mismatch is common during invasions of endemic insular birds and reptiles: 78.3% and 55.1% of their respective alien records occurred outside of the environmental space of species' native climatic niche. In comparison, climatic mismatch was evident for only 16.2% of the amphibian invasions analyzed. Several predictors significantly explained climatic mismatch, and these varied among taxonomic groups. For amphibians, only native range size was associated with climatic mismatch. For reptiles, the magnitude of climatic mismatch was higher for species with narrow native altitudinal ranges, occurring in topographically complex or less remote islands, as well as for species with larger distances between their native and alien ranges. For birds, climatic mismatch was significantly larger for invasions on continents with higher phylogenetic diversity of the recipient community, and when the invader was more evolutionarily distinct. Our findings highlight that apparently common niche shifts of insular species may jeopardize our ability to forecast their potential invasions using correlative methods based on climatic variables. Also, we show which factors provide additional insights on the actual invasion potential of insular endemic amphibians, reptiles, and birds.

Biological invasions are a global challenge that has received insufficient attention. Recently available cost syntheses have provided policy- and decision makers with reliable and up-to-date information on the economic impacts of biological invasions, aiming to motivate effective management. The resultant InvaCost database is now publicly and freely accessible and enables rapid extraction of monetary cost information. This has facilitated knowledge sharing, developed a more integrated and multidisciplinary network of researchers, and forged multidisciplinary collaborations among diverse organizations and stakeholders. Over 50 scientific publications so far have used the database and have provided detailed assessments of invasion costs across geographic, taxonomic, and spatiotemporal scales. These studies have provided important information that can guide future policy and legislative decisions on the management of biological invasions while simultaneously attracting public and media attention. We provide an overview of the improved availability, reliability, standardization, and defragmentation of monetary costs; discuss how this has enhanced invasion science as a discipline; and outline directions for future development.

The bioavailability for varied-size phosphorus (P)-binding colloids (Pcoll) especially from external P sources in soil terrestrial ecosystems remains unclear. This study evaluated the differential contribution of various-sized biogas slurry (BS)-derived colloids to plant available P uptake in the rhizosphere and the corresponding patterns of phosphatase response. Keeping the same content of total P input (15 mg kg-1), we applied different size-fractioned BS-derived colloids including nanosized colloids (NCs, 1-20 nm), fine-sized colloids (FCs, 20-220 nm), and medium-sized colloids (MCs, 220-450 nm) respectively to conduct a 45-day rice (Oryza sativa L.) rhizotron experiment. During the whole cultivation period, the dynamics of chemical characteristics and P fractions in each experimental rhizosphere soil solution were analyzed. The spatial and temporal dynamics examination of P-transforming enzymes (acid phosphatases) in the rice rhizosphere was visualized by a soil zymography technique after 5, 25, and 45 days of rice transplantation. The results indicated that the acid phosphatase activities and its hot spot areas were significantly 1) correlated with the relative bioavailability of colloidal P (RBAcoll), 2) increased with the colloid-free (truly dissolved P) and BS-derived NC addition, and 3) affected by the plant growth stage. With the nanosized BS colloid addition, the RBAcoll and plant biomass were respectively found to be the highest (64% and 1.22 g plant-1), in which the acid phosphatase-catalyzed hydrolysis of organic Pcoll played an important role. All of the above suggested that nanosized BS-derived colloids are an effective alternative to conventional phosphorus fertilizer for promoting plant P uptake and P bioavailability.

Soil colloids have been shown to play a critical role in soil phosphorus (P) mobility and transport. However, identifying the potential mechanisms behind colloidal P (Pcoll) release and the key influencing factors remains a blind spot. Herein, a machine learning approach (random forest (RF) coupled with partial dependence plot analyses) was applied to determine the effects of different soil physicochemical parameters on Pcoll content in three colloidal subfractions (i.e., nano- (NC): 1-20 nm, fine- (FC): 20-220 nm and medium-sized colloids (MC): 220-450 nm) based on a regional dataset of 12 farmlands in Zhejiang Province, China. RF successfully predicted Pcoll content (R2 = 0.98). Results showed that colloidal- organic carbon (OCcoll) and minerals were the major determinants of total Pcoll content (1-450 nm); their critical values for increasing Pcoll release were 87.0 mg L-1 for OCcoll, 11.0 mg L-1 for iron (Fecoll) or aluminium (Alcoll), 2.6 mg L-1 for calcium (Cacoll), 9.0 mg L-1 for magnesium (Mgcoll), 2.5 mg L-1 for silicon (Sicoll), and 1.4 mg L-1 for manganese (Mncoll). Among three colloidal subfractions, the major factors determining Pcoll were soil Olsen-P (POlsen; 125.0 mg kg-1), Cacoll (2.5 mg L-1), and colloidal P saturation (21.0%) in NC; Mncoll (1.5 mg L-1), Mgcoll (6.8 mg L-1), and POlsen (135.0 mg kg-1) in FC; while Mncoll (1.5 mg L-1), Alcoll (2.5 mg L-1), and Fecoll (3.8 mg L-1) in MC, respectively. OCcoll had a considerable effect in the three fractions, with critical values of 80.0 mg L-1 in NC or FC, and 50.0 mg L-1 in MC. Our study concluded that the information gleaned using the RF model can be used as crucial evidence to identify the key determinants of different size fractionated Pcoll contents. However, we still need to discover one or more easy-to-measure parameters that can help us better predict Pcoll.

The ecological niche is a key concept for elucidating patterns of species distributions and developing strategies for conserving biodiversity. However, recent times are seeing a widespread debate whether species niches are conserved across space and time (niche conservatism hypothesis). Biological invasions represent a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis in a short time frame at the global scale. We synthesized empirical findings for 434 invasive species from 86 studies to assess whether invasive species conserve their climatic niche between native and introduced ranges. Although the niche conservatism hypothesis was rejected in most studies, highly contrasting conclusions for the same species between and within studies suggest that the dichotomous conclusions of these studies were sensitive to techniques, assessment criteria, or author preferences. We performed a consistent quantitative analysis of the dynamics between native and introduced climatic niches reported by previous studies. Our results show there is very limited niche expansion between native and introduced ranges, and introduced niches occupy a position similar to native niches in the environmental space. These findings support the niche conservatism hypothesis overall. In particular, introduced niches were narrower for terrestrial animals, species introduced more recently, or species with more native occurrences. Niche similarity was lower for aquatic species, species introduced only intentionally or more recently, or species with fewer introduced occurrences. Climatic niche conservatism for invasive species not only increases our confidence in transferring ecological niche models to new ranges but also supports the use of niche models for forecasting species responses to changing climates.

This study investigated the effect of the prone trunk extension test (PTE) on lumbar and lower limb muscle stiffness to explore the optimal angle for lumbar muscle training, understand the peripheral muscle force transmission effect, and determine the modulation strategy and interaction mode of different muscles during PTE. Twenty healthy young females were recruited for this study, and the stiffness of the erector spinae (ES), semitendinosus (ST), biceps femoris (BF), medial head of the gastrocnemius (MG), and lateral head of the gastrocnemius (LG) was measured by MyotonPRO under four angular PTE conditions (0° horizontal position, 10°, 20°, and 30°). With the increasing angle, the stiffness of ES decreased gradually, while ST and BF increased first and then decreased. The stiffness of MG and LG increased first, then decreased, then increased. There was a moderate to strong negative correlation between ES stiffness variation and ST (r = -0.819 to -0.728, p < 0.001), BF (r = -0.620 to -0.527, p < 0.05), MG (r = -788 to -0.611, p < 0.01), and LG (r = -0.616 to -0.450, p < 0.05). Horizontal PTE maximizes the activation of ES. There is a tension transfer between the ES, hamstrings, and gastrocnemius, mainly between the ES, ST, and LG. The study provides data to explore the effect of peripheral muscle force transmission and the modulation strategies of different muscles during trunk extension.

Colloidal phosphorus (Pcoll) in paddy soils can pose a serious threat to the water environment. Biochar amendment not only directly absorb Pcoll to reduce the runoff loss, but also create hotspots for microbial communities which simultaneously affects soil Pcoll. However, despite the crucial role of microorganisms, it remains elusive regarding how biochar and its feedstock types affect the relationships of soil microbial communities and Pcoll in soil matrix (such as at soil aggregate level). To address the knowledge gap, we explored the (in)direct effects of biochar on the soil Pcoll in physically separated fractions including micro- (53-250 µm) and macroaggregates (250-2000 µm). Results showed that straw and manure biochars decreased the soil Pcoll content by 55.2-56.7% in microaggregates and 41.2-48.4% in macroaggregates after 120 days of incubation, compared to the respective control. The fungal communities showed a significantly correlation (0.34, p < 0.05) with Pcoll content in the macroaggregates, whereas the bacterial communities were extremely significantly correlated (0.66, p < 0.001) with Pcoll content in the microaggregates. Furthermore, the partial least squares path model analysis indicated that biochar amendments directly increased Pcoll content (0.76 and 0.61) in micro- and macroaggregates, but the reduced Pcoll content by biochar was mainly derived from indirect effects, such as changed soil biological characteristics carbon (C)/P (-0.69), microbial biomass C (-0.63), microbial biomass P (-0.68), keystone taxa Proteobacteria (-0.63), and Ascomycota (-0.59), particularly for the macroaggregates. This study highlights that to some extent, biochar addition can reduce soil Pcoll content by affecting microbial communities (some keystone taxa), and soil biological characteristics at soil aggregate level.
