RESUMEN

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is identified as an ideal candidate for next-generation energy storage systems in consideration of its high theoretical energy density and abundant sulfur resources. However, the shuttling behavior of soluble polysulfides (LiPSs) and their sluggish reaction kinetics severely limit the practical application of the current Li-S battery. In this work, a series of In2O3 nanocubes with different oxygen vacancy concentrations are designed and prepared via a facile self-template method. The introduced oxygen vacancy on In2O3 can effectively rearrange the charge distribution and enhance sulfiphilic property. Moreover, the In2O3 with high oxygen vacancy concentration (H-In2O3) can slightly slow down the solid-liquid conversion process and significantly accelerate the liquid-solid conversion process, thus reducing the accumulation of LiPSs in electrolyte and inhibiting the shuttle effect. Contributed by the unique selective catalytic capability, the prepared H-In2O3 exhibits excellent electrochemical performance when used as sulfur host. For instance, a high reversible capacity of 609 mAh g-1 is obtained with only 0.044% capacity decay per cycle over 1000 cycles at 1.0 C. This work presents a typical example for designing advanced sulfur hosts, which is crucial for the commercialization of Li-S battery.

As an internal time-keeping mechanism, circadian rhythm plays crucial role in maintaining homoeostasis when in response to nutrition change; meanwhile, branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) in skeletal muscle play an important role in preserving energy homoeostasis during fasting. Previous results from our laboratory suggested that fasting can influence peripheral circadian rhythm and BCAA metabolism in fish, but the relationship between circadian rhythm and BCAA metabolism, and whether circadian rhythm regulates BCAA metabolism to maintain physiological homoeostasis during fasting remains unclear. This study shows that the expression of fifteen core clock genes as well as KLF15 and Bcat2 is highly responsive to short-term fasting in fast muscle of Siniperca chuatsi, and the correlation coefficient between Clock and KLF15 expression is enhanced after fasting treatment. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the transcriptional expression of KLF15 is regulated by Clock, and the transcriptional expression of Bcat2 is regulated by KLF15 by using dual-luciferase reporter gene assay and Vivo-morpholinos-mediated gene knockdown technique. Therefore, fasting imposes a dynamic coordination of transcription between the circadian rhythm and BCAA metabolic pathways. The findings highlight the interaction between circadian rhythm and BCAA metabolism and suggest that fasting induces a switch in KLF15 expression through affecting the rhythmic expression of Clock, and then KLF15 promotes the transcription of Bcat2 to enhance the metabolism of BCAA, thus maintaining energy homoeostasis and providing energy for skeletal muscle as well as other tissues.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the clinical manifestations and blood indicators to deepen the understanding of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: COVID-19 patients admitted to C10 West Ward, Tongji Hospital in Wuhan City ("West Ward") between January 31 and March 28, 2020, were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 61 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, wherein the non-critical Group had 30 cases, while the critical group had 31 (including 14 survivors and 17 deaths). Age, the proportion of fever cases, white blood cell (WBC), basophils, red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive protein (CRP), high-sensitivity troponin, pro-BNP (brain natriuretic peptide), prothrombin time (PT), and D-dimer were higher in the critical group while lymphocytes, eosinophils, albumin were lower compared with those of the non-critical group (all p < 0.05). WBC (p = 0.008), basophils (p = 0.034), and LDH (p = 0.005) of the death subgroup climbed remarkably in comparison with those of the survival subgroup. CONCLUSIONS: Advanced age, high fever, increases in indicators such as WBC, basophils, CRP, LDH, high-sensitivity troponin, pro-BNP, and D-dimer, and decreases in indicators, including lymphocytes, eosinophils, and albumin, might forebode a critical condition.

PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness and safety of a 27-gauge (27G) beveled-tip microincision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS) with a 25-gauge (25G) flat-tip MIVS for the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). METHODS: A prospective, single-masked, randomized, controlled clinical trial included 52 eyes (52 patients) with PDR requiring proliferative membrane removal. They were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to undergo the 27G beveled-tip and or 25G flat-tip MIVS (the 27G group and the 25G group, respectively). During surgery, the productivity of cutting the membrane, the number of vitrectomy probe (VP) exchanges to microforceps, total operation time, vitrectomy time and intraoperative complications were measured. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP) and postoperative complications were also assessed to month 6. RESULTS: Forty-seven eyes (47 patients) completed the follow-up, including 25 in the 27G group and 22 in the 25G group. During surgery in the 27G group, cutting the membrane was more efficient (P = 0.001), and the number of VP exchanges to microforceps was lower (P = 0.026). The occurrences of intraoperative hemorrhages and electrocoagulation also decreased significantly (P = 0.004 and P = 0.022). There were no statistical differences in the total operation time or vitrectomy time between the two groups (P = 0.275 and P = 0.372), but the former was slightly lower in the 27G group. Additionally, the 27G group required fewer wound sutures (P = 0.044). All the follow-up results revealed no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the 25G flat-tip MIVS, the 27G beveled-tip MIVS could be more efficient in removing the proliferative membrane while reducing the occurrence of intraoperative hemorrhages and electrocoagulation using appropriate surgical techniques and instrument parameters. Its vitreous removal performance was not inferior to that of the 25G MIVS and might offer potential advantages in total operation time. In terms of patient outcomes, advanced MIVS demonstrates equal effectiveness and safety to 25G flat-tip MIVS. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The clinical trial has been registered at Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT0544694) on 07/07/2022. And all patients in the article were enrolled after registration.

Non-equilibrium kinetic intermediates are usually preferentially generated instead of thermodynamic stable phases in the solid-state synthesis of layered oxides. Understanding the inherent complexity between thermodynamics and kinetics is important for designing high cationic ordering cathodes. Single-crystal strategy is an effective way to solve the intrinsic chemo-mechanical problems of Ni-rich cathodes. However, the synthesis of high-performance single-crystal is very challenging. Herein, the kinetic reaction path and the formation mechanism of non-equilibrium intermediates in the synthesis of single-crystal Co-free Ni-rich were explored. We demonstrate that the formation of non-equilibrium intermediate and the electrochemical-thermo-mechanical failure can be effectively inhibited by driving low-temperature topotactic lithiation. This work provides a basis for designing high-performance single-crystal Ni-rich layered oxides by regulating the defective structures.

BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) is well known to influence the progression of depression. However, the molecular mechanisms triggering NAc neuroinflammation in depression have not been fully elucidated. Progranulin (PGRN) is a multifunctional growth factor that is linked to the innate immune response and inflammation, and PGRN plays a key role in neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Here, the purpose of this study was to validate whether PGRN was involved in the NAc neuroinflammation-promoted depressive-like phenotype. METHODS: A NAc neuroinflammation-relevant depression-like model was established using wild-type (WT) and PGRN-knockout (KO) mice after NAc injection with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and various behavioral tests related to cognition, social recognition, depression and anxiety were performed with WT and PGRNKO mice with or without NAc immune challenge. RT‒PCR, ELISA, western blotting and immunofluorescence staining were used to determine the expression and function of PGRN in the neuroinflammatory reaction in the NAc after LPS challenge. The morphology of neurons in the NAc from WT and PGRNKO mice under conditions of NAc neuroinflammation was analyzed using Golgi-Cox staining, followed by Sholl analyses. The potential signaling pathways involved in NAc neuroinflammation in PGRNKO mice were investigated by western blotting. RESULTS: Under normal conditions, PGRN deficiency induced FTD-like behaviors in mice and astrocyte activation in the NAc, promoted the release of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10 and increased dendritic complexity and synaptic protein BDNF levels in the NAc. However, NAc neuroinflammation enhanced PGRN expression, which was located in astrocytes and microglia within the NAc, and PGRN deficiency in mice alleviated NAc neuroinflammation-elicited depression-like behaviors, seemingly inhibiting astrocyte- and microglia-related inflammatory reactions and neuroplasticity complexity in the NAc via the p38 and nuclear factor of kappa (NF-κB) signaling pathways present in the NAc after neuroinflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that PGRN exerts distinct function on different behaviors, showing protective roles in the FTD-like behavior and detrimental effects on the neuroinflammation-related depression-like behavior, resulting from mediating astrocyte and microglial functions from the NAc in different status.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of SPAR signaling pathway on the restoration of motor function in ischemic stroke (IS). Sprague-Dawley male rats were separated into the control and sham groups, as well as the group for middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model establishment. Successfully established rat ischemic models were randomly divided into model, SNKMCAO-del and pcDNA3.1-SNK groups. The evaluation of motor function among the rats in each group was assessed using a balance beam, a screen test and the Garcia scoring method. CatWalk gait analysis was employed to evaluate the effect of the SNK signaling pathway on rat motor function. Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) and TUNEL staining were techniques were utilized for cerebral infarction (CI) area as well for hippocampal neuron apoptosis. The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blotting methods were performed to detect mRNA and protein expressions of SNK and SPAR. When compared with the model group, the SNKMCAO-del group displayed decreased motor function score and CI area, while contrasting results were observed in the pcDNA3.1-SNK group. According to the results obtained from the CatWalk gait analysis, the SNKMCAO-del group showed a clear improvement compared to the model group whereas the pcDNA3.1-SNK group exhibited poorer results than the model group in the objective parameters of the study, such as movement, speed, running duration, print area, maximal contact area, maximal, mean intensity, and stride length. These findings suggested that SNK gene silencing promotes motor function by inhibiting the SNK-SPAR signaling pathway in rats with ischemic stroke.

As the unique chimeric member of the ß-galactoside-binding protein family, galectin-3 is a multivalent and multifunctional oncogenic protein involved in multiple physiological and pathological processes, including cell growth, cell differentiation, cell adhesion, RNA splicing, cell apoptosis, and malignant transformation. Post-translational modifications can effectively increase a protein's functional diversity, either by degradation or adding chemical modifications, thus regulating activity, localization, and ligand interaction. In order to clearly understand the functional mechanisms of galectin-3 involved in normal cell biology and pathogenesis, here, we have summarized the previously reported post-translational modifications of galectin-3, including cleavage and phosphorylation. Cleavage of galectin-3 by MMPs, PSA, and proteases from parasites generated intact carbohydrate-recognition domain and N-terminal peptides of varying lengths that retained lectin binding activity but lost multivalence. Serine and tyrosine phosphorylation of galectin-3 by c-Abl, CKI, and GSK-3ß could regulate its localization and associated signal transduction. Accordingly, cleavage and phosphorylation play an important role in regulating galectin-3 function via altering its multivalence, localization, and ligand interaction.

BACKGROUND: Greenlight laser transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) is a standard surgical method used to treat patients with prostate gland enlargement, it is safe and effective. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of sudden occurence of hypotension and bradycardia during greenlight laser TURP. Two patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy were scheduled for greenlight laser TURP under spinal anesthesia. Hypotension and bradycardia were suddenly occurred during the operation. The blood gas analysis revealed no hyponatremia (indicating TURP syndrome) or anemia (indicating hemorrhage). Operation was suspended and inotropic agents were administrated intravenous immediately, then blood pressure and heart rate increased to normal level within some minutes. The patients were discharged from hospital without any complications. We considered parasympathetic reflex was occurred during greenlight laser TURP. CONCLUSION: Apart from TURP syndrome, hemorrhage, bladder perforation and high spinal anesthesia, the parasympathetic reflex which is caused by operative process can also induce hypotension and bradycardia during TURP.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether smoking cessation can reduce the incidence of postoperative hypoxemia (POH) after on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. DESIGN: Prospective, single-center, observational study. SETTING: Single-center university teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: The study comprised 300 patients undergoing on-pump CABG surgery who met the inclusion criteria. Patients were divided into the following 3 groups according to smoking status: sustained quitters (n = 132)-smoking cessation for more than 1 month and less than 1 year; quitters (n = 95)-smoking cessation for more than 1 week and less than 1 month; and smokers (n = 73)-smoking at least 1 cigarette per day for at least 1 year. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The primary outcome was the incidence of POH after on-pump CABG surgery. Secondary outcomes included length of postoperative mechanical ventilation and intensive care unit stay between the POH group and non-POH group. There were significant decreases of POH incidence in the sustained quitters and quitters compared with the smokers both after intensive care unit (ICU) admission and 24 hours after surgery (18.2%, 18.9%, v 32.9%; p = 0.036 and 9.8%, 10.5%, v 26%; p = 0.003, respectively), and there was no significant difference in POH incidence between the sustained quitters and quitters. The length of postoperative mechanical ventilation was longer in smokers than in sustained quitters and quitters (15.9±6.1 h v 11.9±5.3 h and 13.0±5.8 h, respectively; p<0.05), but there were no significant differences in the length of ICU stay among the 3 groups (54.2±7.5 h v 55.1±7.5 h and 53.7±6.6 h, respectively; p = 0.333). CONCLUSIONS: Smoking cessation can reduce POH after on-pump CABG surgery, and it also can shorten the length of postoperative mechanical ventilation.

Dendritic cells (DCs) pulsed with exosomes can stimulate efficient cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses and anti-tumor immunity. However, the quantity of DC-derived exosomes (DCex) obtained from various culture systems is very low, which is a significant practical issue hampering progress in this research area and needs to be addressed. Gliomas were particularly aggressive, with high morbidity and mortality, indicating that this is a form of incurable highly malignant tumor of the brain with poor prognosis. In the present study, we demonstrate that the CELLine 1000 culture system can dramatically increase the production of DCex. The morphology, phenotype and immune molecules of these DCex were found to be identical to those using traditional methods. Our researches supply a cost-effective, useful method for significantly increasing the quantity of exosomes. In addition, GL261 glioma cells were chosen to separate chaperone-rich cell lysates (CRCL). The results indicate that CRCL-GL261 cell lysates can trigger the most intense expression of immune molecules on DCex or DCs, which has important implications for the research into tumor treatment and diagnosis.

Objective: This study aimed to observe the neurophysiological characteristics of type II and type III 5q spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients and the changes in peripheral motor nerve electrophysiology after Nusinersen treatment, as well as the influencing factors. Methods: This single-center retrospective case-control study collected clinical data and peripheral motor nerve CMAP parameters from 42 5qSMA patients and 42 healthy controls at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University (January 2021 to December 2022). It evaluated changes in motor function and CMAP amplitude before and after Nusinersen treatment. Results: Our investigation encompassed all symptomatic and genetically confirmed SMA patients, consisting of 32 type II and 10 type III cases, with a median age of 57 months (29.5 to 96 months). Comparative analysis with healthy controls revealed substantial reductions in CMAP amplitudes across various nerves in both type II and type III patients. Despite the administration of Nusinersen treatment for 6 or 14 months to the entire cohort, discernible alterations in motor nerve amplitudes were not observed, except for a significant improvement in younger patients (≤36 months) at the 14-month mark. Further scrutiny within the type II subgroup unveiled that individuals with a disease duration ≤12 months experienced a noteworthy upswing in femoral nerve amplitude, a statistically significant difference when compared to those with >12 months of disease duration. Conclusion: Motor nerve amplitudes were significantly decreased in type II and type III 5q SMA patients compared to healthy controls. Nusinersen treatment showed better improvement in motor nerve amplitudes in younger age groups and those with shorter disease duration, indicating a treatment-time dependence.

Purpose: To investigate the 3-months outcomes of patients who underwent intraoperative intravitreal injection of Ozurdex for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: This is a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial (ChiCTR2100043399). Seventy-one patients with PDR who had indications for surgery without intravitreal injection history within 3 months preoperatively were enrolled. Patients were randomly divided into three groups based on the medicine injected intraoperatively: Ozurdex, Conbercept, and Control group. The primary outcome is the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) within 3 months postoperatively. The secondary outcomes include the intraocular pressure (IOP), mean sensitivity, central retinal thickness and vessels perfusion. Results: The BCVA and the mean sensitivity improved in the three groups (F = 130.8, P < 0.0001; F = 34.18, P < 0.0001), but there was no statistical difference among the three groups (F = 0.858, P = 0.552; F = 0.964, P = 0.452). The IOP was no significant differences among the three groups within 3 months postoperatively (F = 0.881, P = 0.533). Compared with the other two groups, central retinal thickness (CRT) and outer retinal layer (ORL) thickness decreased significantly in patients of the Ozurdex group (F = 3.037, P = 0.008; F = 2.626, P = 0.018), especially in the diabetic macular edema (DME) patients (F = 2.761, P = 0.0164; F = 2.572, P = 0.0240). In macular region, superficial vascular plexus (SVP), intermediate capillary plexus (ICP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) perfusion were not shown statistical difference at 3 months postoperatively in the all three groups compared with 1 day postoperatively (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the other two groups, anatomical outcomes was improved significantly in Ozurdex group for DR patients. Ozurdex may help to improve the visual acuity and visual sensitivity, and there is no significant difference in the change of IOP and microvascular improvement. Purpose: This article aims to report a case of successful treatment of peripheral granulomatous ocular toxocariasis (OT) in an 8-year-old patient using intravitreal injection of dexamethasone (DEX) implant (Ozurdex) under ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) guidance. Case presentation: A previously healthy 8-year-old boy with a history of long-term close contact with dogs complained of blurring of vision in the right eye for a year. Ophthalmic examination of his right eye showed chronic uveitis. Notably, UBM examination identified granulomas and peripheral vitreous strand in the ciliary body from 3 to 8 o'clock positions. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results of the intraocular fluid (IF) and serum showed increased anti-Toxocara immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels, leading to a diagnosis of peripheral granulomatous OT in the right eye. Intraocular surgery was not indicated in this case. The treatment goal was to alleviate uveitis, improve visual acuity, and prevent complications. He was treated with an intravitreal injection of DEX implant, administered as a single dose every three months, total two doses, combined with albendazole, an oral anthelmintic. Under preoperative UBM guidance, two injections were performed at the 12 and 10 o'clock positions in the pars plana where there were no granulomas and peripheral vitreous strand, successfully preventing complications associated with intravitreal injection. After two injections, the patient's right eye vision improved significantly, with the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) increasing from 20/400 to 20/50. Vitreous opacity and retinal edema were reduced, preretinal proliferative membrane was stabilized, and no adverse events occurred. Conclusion: UBM can accurately determine the location and extent of peripheral granulomas in OT patients, facilitating the avoidance of granulomas during intravitreal injection and preventing complications associated with intravitreal injection. Under the close follow-up and strict adherence to indications, preoperative UBM-guided intravitreal injections of DEX implant treatment for pediatric peripheral granulomatous OT are safe and effective, providing a new therapeutic option for pediatric peripheral granulomatous OT.

Six previously undescribed sesquiterpenoids, chrysanthterpenoids H-M (1-6), were isolated from the stem and leaves of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. Structure elucidation of isolated compounds was unambiguously determined based on extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses. Furthermore, computational prediction of ECD was used to propose the absolute configurations of the compounds. All compounds were evaluated for their anti-asthma effects on RBL-2H3 cells in vitro. The results showed that Compounds 2 and 3 significantly inhibited the release of ß-aminohexosidase and improved RBL-2H3 degranulation by chromogenic substrate and high-content imaging. These results suggest that Compounds 2 and 3 may exhibit anti-asthma activities.

Polysaccharides including water-soluble fraction (W), 1,2-Cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid (CDTA)-soluble fraction (CA), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)-soluble fraction (SC), 1 M potassium hydroxide (KOH)-soluble fractions (PH1), and 4 M KOH-soluble fraction (PH4) were successively extracted from Dendrocalamus brandisii bamboo shoot shells using water, CDTA, Na2CO3, and KOH solution. The analytical methods were employed to initially identify the structural characteristics of the five polysaccharide fractions, and their antioxidant capacities in vitro were determined. According to the data, the average molecular weight of the five polysaccharide fractions was between 4 816 and 993 935 Da. In all four types (CA, SC, PH1, and PH4), xylose was the most abundant monosaccharide, especially in PH1 and PH4. Both PH1 and PH4 were found to contain 1,4-ß-d-Xylp as their main chain, as determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Additional research into CA and SC's antioxidant potential is required since they both showed potent in vitro antioxidant activities.

Elderly people without atrial fibrillation (AF) still have a high incidence of cardioembolic stroke, suggesting that thrombus formation within the left atrial appendage (LAA) may also occur in an AF-independent manner. In the present study, we explored the potential mechanisms for aging-induced LAA thrombus formation and stroke in mice. We monitored stroke events in 180 aging male mice (14-24 months) and assessed left atrium (LA) remodeling by echocardiography at different ages. Mice that had stroke were implanted with telemeters to confirm AF. Histological features of LA and LAA thrombi were examined, as well as collagen content, expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and leukocyte density in the atria at different ages, in mice with or without stroke. Also, the effects of MMP inhibition on stroke incidence and atrial inflammation were tested. We detected 20 mice (11 %) with stroke, 60 % of which were within 18-19 months of age. Although we did not detect AF in mice with stroke, we detected the presence of LAA thrombi, suggesting that stroke originated from the hearts of these mice. Compared with 18-month-old mice without stroke, 18-month-old stroke mice had enlarged LA with a very thin endocardium, that was associated with less collagen and heightened MMP expression in the atria. During aging, we found that the expression of mRNAs for atrial MMP7, MMP8, and MMP9 peaked at 18 months, which closely correlated with reductions in collagen content and the time-window for cardioembolic stroke in these mice. Treatment of mice with an MMP inhibitor at 17-18 months of age reduced atrial inflammation and remodeling, and stroke incidence. Taken together, our study demonstrates that aging-induced LAA thrombus formation occurs through a mechanism involving upregulation of MMPs and breakdown of collagen, and that treatment with an MMP inhibitor may be effective as a treatment strategy for this heart condition.

Photothermal therapy has the characteristics of minimal invasiveness, controllability, high efficiency, and strong specificity, which can effectively make up for the toxic side effects and tumor resistance caused by traditional drug treatment. However, due to the limited tissue penetration of infrared light, it is difficult to promote and apply in clinical practice. The eye is the only transparent tissue in human, and infrared light can easily penetrate the eye tissue, so it is expected that photothermal therapy can be used to treat fundus diseases. Here in, a new nano-platform assembled by liposome and indocyanine green (ICG) was used to treat retinoblastoma. ICG was assembled in liposomes to overcome some problems of ICG itself. For example, ICG is easily quenched, self-aggregating and instability. Moreover, liposomes can prevent free ICG from being cleared through the systemic circulation. The construction of the nano-platform not only ensured the stability of ICG in vivo, but also realized imaging-guide photothermal therapy, which created a new strategy for the treatment of retinoblastoma.

As micropower devices, microfluidic fuel cells (MFCs) have gained much attention due to their simple configurations and high power densities. MFCs exploit the parallel laminar flowing of two electrolytes in a microchannel with a characteristic length from 1 to 1000 µm to separate the anolyte and catholyte, without the proton exchange membranes in the traditional fuel cells. These membrane-less configurations can avoid a series of technical problems related to the membranes. To achieve an MFC with high power density and low cost, we constructed the direct formate MFCs with two catalyst-free oxidants containing FeCl3 and Na2S2O8 solutions, respectively, and compared the performance of the two MFCs. Due to Na2S2O8 being an oxidant with some distinctive advantages, including its high theoretical potential, high solubility of itself and its reduction product, and environmental friendliness, the Na2S2O8-based MFC showed a higher open-circuit voltage (>2.0 V) and better performance. Then, we studied the effects of oxidant concentrations, flow rates, and fuel concentrations on the performance of the Na2S2O8-based MFC. The results showed the optimum performance of the Na2S2O8-based MFC with the peak power density of 214.95 mW cm-2 and the limiting current density of 700.13 mA cm-2 under the conditions of 1.5 M HCOONa, 2 M Na2S2O8, and 300 µL min-1 at an anolyte/catholyte flow ratio of 2:1. The performance was also the highest among the direct formate MFCs reported up to now. Moreover, the Na2S2O8-based MFC could stably discharge for about 4 h under a constant voltage. All of the results demonstrated that Na2S2O8 was a suitable oxidant and that the Na2S2O8-based MFC could realize the goals of high power density and low cost for the actual application of MFCs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the evolution of cognitive function and its influence factors, so as to provide evidence for guiding treatment of cognitive impairment after stroke. METHODS: A total of 98 cases of patients with stroke admitted in the First and Second Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital between April and September 2009 were enrolled and recruited. Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Montreal cognitive function rating scale (MoCA) were adopted to assess the evolution of cognition at acute phase (within 2 weeks), 6 weeks, and 12 weeks after stroke among patients within 2 weeks after onset, questionnaire score ≤ 56, without aphasia and consciousness disturbance and at least one side of upper extremities muscle force ≥ grade 3. RESULTS: When using MMSE scale as criteria, the incidence of cognitive impairment was 24.5% at acute phase, 12.1% at 6 weeks and 9.9% at 12 weeks after stroke, while the incidence was 86.8%, 68.2%, and 38.0% respectively when using MoCA scale as criteria. The scales of MMSE and MoCA were increased and the incidence of cognitive impairment was decreased within 12 weeks after stroke. Logistic regression analysis indicated that, advanced age (ß = -0.124), hypertension (ß = -3.705), low education level(ß = 0.560) and depression after stroke (ß = 4.613) were related with cognitive impairment after stroke (all P values < 0.05); low education level(ß = 0.710), coronary heart disease (ß = -3.649), elevated total cholesterol (TC) (ß = -3.361) and low density lipid cholesterol (LDL-C) (ß = -5.833), and depression (ß = -3.612) delayed recovery of cognition after stroke. CONCLUSIONS: The cognitive function improves and the incidence of cognitive impairment lowers as the time goes on within 12 weeks after stroke. The factors that may affect the improvement of cognitive function include low educational level, coronary heart disease, elevated TC and LDL-C, and post-stroke depression.
