Transition metals and related compounds are known to exhibit high catalytic activities in various electrochemical reactions thanks to their intriguing electronic structures. What is lesser known is their unique role in storing and transferring electrons in battery electrodes which undergo additional solid-state conversion reactions and exhibit substantially large extra capacities. Here, a full dynamic picture depicting the generation and evolution of electrochemical interfaces in the presence of metallic nanoparticles is revealed in a model CoCO3/Li battery via an in situ magnetometry technique. Beyond the conventional reduction to a Li2CO3/Co mixture under battery operation, further decomposition of Li2CO3 is realized by releasing interfacially stored electrons from its adjacent Co nanoparticles, whose subtle variation in the electronic structure during this charge transfer process has been monitored in real time. The findings in this work may not only inspire future development of advanced electrode materials for next-generation energy storage devices but also open up opportunities in achieving in situ monitoring of important electrocatalytic processes in many energy conversion and storage systems.

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors have been demonstrated to promote reverse cardiac remodeling in people with diabetes or heart failure. Although it has been theorized that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors might afford similar benefits in people without diabetes or prevalent heart failure, this has not been evaluated. We sought to determine whether sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibition with empagliflozin leads to a decrease in left ventricular (LV) mass in people without type 2 diabetes or significant heart failure. METHODS: Between April 2021 and January 2022, 169 individuals, 40 to 80 years of age, without diabetes but with risk factors for adverse cardiac remodeling were randomly assigned to empagliflozin (10 mg/d; n=85) or placebo (n=84) for 6 months. The primary outcome was the 6-month change in LV mass indexed (LVMi) to baseline body surface area as measured by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Other measures included 6-month changes in LV end-diastolic and LV end-systolic volumes indexed to baseline body surface area and LV ejection fraction. RESULTS: Among the 169 participants (141 men [83%]; mean age, 59.3±10.5 years), baseline LVMi was 63.2±17.9 g/m2 and 63.8±14.0 g/m2 for the empagliflozin- and placebo-assigned groups, respectively. The difference (95% CI) in LVMi at 6 months in the empagliflozin group versus placebo group adjusted for baseline LVMi was -0.30 g/m2 (-2.1 to 1.5 g/m2; P=0.74). Median baseline (interquartile range) NT-proBNP (N-terminal-pro B-type natriuretic peptide) was 51 pg/mL (20-105 pg/mL) and 55 pg/mL (21-132 pg/mL) for the empagliflozin- and placebo-assigned groups, respectively. The 6-month treatment effect of empagliflozin versus placebo (95% CI) on blood pressure and NT-proBNP (adjusted for baseline values) were -1.3 mm Hg (-5.2 to 2.6 mm Hg; P=0.52), 0.69 mm Hg (-1.9 to 3.3 mm Hg; P=0.60), and -6.1 pg/mL (-37.0 to 24.8 pg/mL; P=0.70) for systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and NT-proBNP, respectively. No clinically meaningful between-group differences in LV volumes (diastolic and systolic indexed to baseline body surface area) or ejection fraction were observed. No difference in adverse events was noted between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among people with neither diabetes nor significant heart failure but with risk factors for adverse cardiac remodeling, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibition with empagliflozin did not result in a meaningful reduction in LVMi after 6 months. Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) plays a key role in glucose metabolism, which has been a close target for diabetes pathology and treatment. It is significant for the evaluation of cellular DPP4 activity in various biological systems. Fluorescence imaging technology is currently a popular method for detecting enzymes in living cells due to its advantages of high selectivity, high sensitivity, high spatiotemporal resolution, and real-time visualization. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR)-emissive probe NEDP with a large Stokes shift (153 nm) was developed for the assay of DPP4 activity. Upon addition of DPP4, NEDP can emit a significant turn-on NIR fluorescence signal (673 nm) with high sensitivity and specificity. Moreover, NEDP can successfully be used for imaging of intracellular DPP4, confirming the regulation of DPP4 expression in hyperglucose and its treatment in living cells. Most importantly, NEDP can not only monitor the changes of DPP4 in vivo but also show that DPP4 in diabetes is mainly up-regulated in the liver, and the level of DPP4 is positively correlated with the pathological damage of the liver. In addition, NEDP can identify the serum of diabetic patients from healthy people through the fluorescence response to DPP4. These results demonstrated that the designed probe NEDP provides a prospective visual tool to explore the relationship between DPP4 and diabetes and would be applied for detecting serum of diabetes in the clinic.

PURPOSE: Vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been studied extensively as safe and manageable nutrient interventions for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The purpose of the current meta-analysis was to examine the effects of vitamins and PUFAs on cognition and to compare the effects of single and multiple nutrient subgroups in patients with MCI. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) written in English and Chinese were retrieved from eight databases, namely, PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, SinoMed, CNKI, and Wanfang Data, from their respective dates of inception until 16 July 2023. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. Meta-analyses were performed to determine the standardized mean differences (SMDs) in global cognitive function, memory function, attention, visuospatial skills, executive function, and processing speed between the supplement and control groups using 95% confidence intervals (CI) and I2. Prospero registration number: CRD42021292360. RESULTS: Sixteen RCTs that studied different types of vitamins and PUFAs were included. The meta-analysis revealed that vitamins affected global cognitive function (SMD = 0.58, 95% CI = [0.20, 0.96], P = 0.003), memory function (SMD = 2.55, 95% CI = [1.01, 4.09], P = 0.001), and attention (SMD = 3.14, 95% CI = [1.00, 5.28], P = 0.004) in patients with MCI, and PUFAs showed effects on memory function (SMD = 0.65, 95% CI = [0.32, 0.99], P < 0.001) and attention (SMD = 2.98, 95% CI = [2.11, 3.84], P < 0.001). Single vitamin B (folic acid [FA]: SMD = 1.21, 95% CI = [0.87, 1.55]) supplementation may be more effective than multiple nutrients (FA and vitamin B12: SMD = 0.71, 95% CI = [0.41, 1.01]; and FA combined with docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]: SMD = 0.58, 95% CI = [0.34, 0.83]) in global cognitive function. CONCLUSIONS: FA, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and vitamin D may improve global cognitive function, memory function, and attention in patients with MCI. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA may improve memory function and attention. We also noted that FA may exert a greater effect than a vitamin B combination (FA and vitamin B12) or the combination of FA and DHA. However, because of the low evidence-based intensity, further trials are necessary to confirm these findings.

Intermittent fertilization intensity (IFI) is closely related to higher fertilization in chickens, but the genetic basis of IFI is not clearly understood. Here, we sampled a total of 939 Wenchang chickens with IFI. The IFI traits had negative correlation with the fertilization rate and exhibited huge phenotypic variations among individuals of the same strain. Based on SNPs derived from a subset of 499 whole genome data, a genome-wide association study with mixed linear model and further linkage disequilibrium analysis were performed to test potential associations between IFI traits and genomic variants. We identified 35 SNP variants and a 19.82 kb linkage disequilibrium block on chr8 significantly associated with IFI. This block is in the intron of LOC101750715, which shows significant homology with the human LMO4. Therefore, LOC101750715 and LMO4 may regulate IFI. The oviduct's immune regulation is crucial for fertilization. LMO4, activated by IL-6 and IL-23, promotes inflammation in epithelial cells. Thus, LOC101750715 and LMO4 may affect fertilization by regulating oviductal inflammation, impacting IFI. Our findings will provide targets for molecular-marker selection and genetic manipulation for lines of chickens with lower IFI.

OBJECTIVES: Klotho, consisting of membrane klotho and soluble alpha-klotho, is found to be associated with better cognitive outcomes in small samples of the aged population. We aimed to examine the association of serum soluble alpha-klotho with cognitive functioning among older adults using a nationally representative sample of U.S. older adults. METHOD: A total of 2,173 U.S. older adults aged 60-79 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2014 were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Serum soluble alpha-klotho was measured in the laboratory and analyzed with an ELISA kit. Cognitive function was measured using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning subtest (CERAD-WL) immediate and delayed memory, the Animal fluency test (AFT), and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Test-specific and global cognition z-scores were calculated based on sample means and standard deviations. Multivariable linear regression models were applied to examine the association of quartiles and continuous value of serum soluble alpha-klotho with test-specific and global cognition z-scores. Subgroup analysis was conducted by sex. The following covariates were included in the analysis- age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, depressive symptoms, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, stroke, prevalent coronary heart disease, total cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure. All the information was self-reported or obtained from health exams. RESULTS: Serum soluble alpha-klotho level in the lowest quartile was associated with lower z-scores for DSST (beta [ß] =-0.13, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.25, -0.01). For subgroup analysis, serum soluble alpha-klotho level in the lowest quartile was associated with lower z-scores for DSST (ß=-0.16, 95% CI: -0.32, -0.003) and global cognition (ß=-0.14, 95% CI: -0.28, -0.01) among female participants. No association was found between continuous serum soluble alpha-klotho and cognitive functioning among the participants. CONCLUSIONS: Lower serum soluble alpha-klotho quartile was associated with poorer cognitive functioning among older women. Future studies are expected to examine the longitudinal association between klotho levels and cognitive outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To determine a pooled prevalence of depression and its influencing factors among nursing home residents. METHOD: PsycINFO, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for studies investigating the prevalence and risk factors of late-life depression among nursing home residents between January 2012 and November 2022. Two reviewers independently completed the literature screening, data extraction and quality assessment. A random-effects model was utilized to pool the prevalence of depression and summarize the influencing factors. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included 48 studies involving 28,501 participants. The pooled prevalence of depressive mood and major depressive disorder was 53% and 27%, respectively. The rate of depressive mood is higher in lower-middle-income countries (60.0%), compared with high- (53.0%) and upper-middle-income countries (44.0%). The rate of depressive mood (35.0%) is higher among females than male (19.0%). Depression was influenced by factors, including male (OR = 0.28), insufficient income (OR = 3.53), comorbidities (OR = 2.66), pain (OR = 2.67; r = 0.31), functional disability (r = 0.33), loneliness (r = 0.43), number of chronic health problems (r = 0.18), social support (r = -0.28), activities of daily living (r = -0.43), subjective health (r = -0.28), autonomy (r = -0.41), environment (r = -0.50) and physical (r = -0.57) and psychological health (r = -0.65). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of depressive mood is high among nursing home residents, especially in lower-middle-income countries. It is influenced by factors including gender, income, social support, daily activities, environment, physical and psychological health and autonomy. Understanding those factors can provide evidence-based recommendations for improved awareness, prevention and better management of late-life depression.

INTRODUCTION: Physical frailty is reversible, but little is known about the sustainability of frailty remission and its impact on dementia. METHODS: Data were derived from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) (2011 to 2021). Physical frailty was assessed using the Fried frailty phenotype, and frailty transition patterns across three waves were defined. The relationship of sustained frailty remission with incident dementia was examined using Cox proportional regression, stratified by age and gender. RESULTS: Among 1931 participants, 348 (18.0%) were capable of sustained frailty remission. During the 8-year follow-up, 279 participants developed dementia. In a fully adjusted model, sustained remission was associated with a lower risk of dementia (hazard ratio = 0.66, 95% confidence interval = 0.47 to 0.93). The association was more pronounced among younger-old and male participants but not observed among their counterparts. DISCUSSION: Sustained frailty remission was associated with a reduced risk of developing dementia. Physical frailty could be an essential forewarning of dementia and a target for interventions. OBJECTIVES: Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) have been individually associated with fall-related outcomes, but their combined effect on fear of falling (FOF) has not been investigated. This study aims to examine the association between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and FOF in older adults. METHODS: Data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, 4,295 community-dwelling older adults ≥ 65 years were analyzed in this longitudinal study. CMDs were assessed at baseline, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and hypertension. FOF was evaluated by asking participants if they worried about falling in the past month. Data were analyzed using multi-adjusted logistic regression. RESULTS: Cardiometabolic multimorbidity was associated with a higher risk of FOF. The combination of heart disease and diabetes showed the highest risk of FOF (OR = 3.47, 95 % CI: 1.63-7.40). CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to mitigate the combined impact of cardiometabolic multimorbidity on FOF in older adults.

Conventional chemotherapy (CT) is associated with severe side effects and inducible resistance, making it difficult to meet clinical requirements, forcing the development of new multifunctional prodrugs for precision medicine. In recent decades, researchers and clinicians have focused on developing of multifunctional chemotherapeutic prodrugs with tumor-targeting capability, activatable and traceable chemotherapeutic activity, as a powerful tool to improve theranostic outcomes in cancer treatment. The conjugates of near-infrared (NIR) organic fluorophores and chemotherapy reagents create an exciting avenue for real-time monitoring of drug delivery and distribution, as well as the combination of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Therefore, there are great opportunities for researchers to conceive and exploit multifunctional prodrugs that can visualize chemo-drugs release and tumor treatment inâ vivo. In this review, the design strategy and the recent progress of multifunctional organic chemotherapeutic prodrugs for activating NIR fluorescence imaging-guided therapy are described and discussed in detail. Finally, the prospects and challenges of multifunctional chemotherapeutic prodrugs for NIR fluorescence imaging-guided therapy are provided.

BACKGROUND: Using accurate assessment tools to assess patients in clinical practice is important to mining influencing factors and implementing interventions. However, most evaluation tools for the self-management of elderly patients with hypertension lack a theoretical basis and wide applicability, which makes the intervention effect insignificant. METHODS: Based on the Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) model, combined with literature review and qualitative research, a questionnaire item pool was initially formulated; then the initial items were screened and adjusted through expert consultation and pre-testing to form an initial scale. A field survey of 450 elderly hypertensive patients was then performed using the initial scale to test the reliability and validity of the scale. Cronbach's alpha, test-retest reliability and composite reliability were used to test the reliability of the scale, and the validity of the scale was evaluated from two aspects: content validity and construct validity. The evaluation results of the content validity of the scale by experts were used as the content validity index; the results of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used as the structural validity index to further verify the model structure of the scale and develop a formal scale. RESULTS: The final self-management scale included 4 dimensions and 33 items. The Scale-Content Validity Index was 0.920. Exploratory factor analysis extracted four factors that explained 71.3% of the total variance. Cronbach's alpha of the formal scale was 0.867, test-retest reliability was 0.894, and composite reliability of the 4 dimensions were within 0.943 ~ 0.973. Confirmatory factor analysis showed the scale had good construct validity. CONCLUSIONS: The Self-management Capability, Support and Motivation-Behaviour scale for elderly hypertensive patients has good reliability and validity, providing a tool for medical staff to evaluate the self-management level of elderly hypertensive patients.

The dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has been detected in fetuses and infants and can cause damage to the reproductive system in adulthood, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. Here, we aim to investigate the effects of intrauterine DBP exposure on offspring reproductive function and explore possible mechanisms. SPF C57BL/6 pregnant mice were given DBP (0.5, 5, 75 mg/kg/d) or corn oil from day 5 to day 19 by gavage. After weaning, the pups were fed a standard diet for 5 weeks. In addition, TM3 Leydig cell cultures were used to study the relevant mechanisms in vitro. The results showed that intrauterine DBP exposure could reduce sperm density and sperm motility, cause testicular tissue damage, down-regulate serum T and LH levels, and up-regulate serum FSH levels at 75 mg/kg/d. Western blot and methylation detection revealed intrauterine exposure to DBP down-regulated testosterone synthesis-related proteins StAR, P450scc, 3ß-HSD, PKA, and PKC expression, while up-regulated the levels of methyltransferase proteins expression and DNA 5-methylcytosine (5mC) in testicular tissue of mouse offspring at 75 mg/kg/d. Further detection found in utero 75 mg/kg/d DBP exposure down-regulated MGARP protein expression, and induced incomplete methylation of the MGARP gene. An in vitro analysis showed that MGARP inhibition is involved in an impaired testosterone synthesis in TM3 cells. Cell culture results suggest that MGARP down-regulation may be involved in impaired testosterone production in monobutyl phthalate-treated cells. The present study revealed that 75 mg/kg/d DBP exposure in utero resulted in testosterone synthesis disorders and reproductive function impairment in mouse offspring, and the mechanism may be related to DNA methylation-mediated down-regulation of MGARP in the testis.

This study aims to examine the bidirectional association between fear of falling (FOF) and frailty among community-dwelling older adults. Longitudinal analyses were conducted over a representative sample of 5,829 community-dwelling individuals ≥65 years from the National Health and Aging Trends Study. FOF was ascertained by asking participants whether they worried about falling and if this worry ever limited their activities. Frailty status was assessed based on frailty phenotype. At baseline, 71.4% of participants reported no FOF, 16.7% reported FOF without fear-related activity restriction (FAR), and 11.9% reported FOF with FAR. The proportion of robust, pre-frail and frail respondents at baseline was 36.1%, 48.7% and 15.2%, respectively. Multinomial logistic regression models indicated FOF with and without FAR predicted pre-frailty and frailty. Pre-frailty predicted FOF with and without FAR, while frailty only predicted FOF with FAR. Tailored intervention strategies are needed for preventing adverse outcomes of FOF and frailty among the older population.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperphenylalaninemia predicts poor outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, the prognostic value and factors associated with stress hyperphenylalaninemia (SHP) were unknown in critical patients in the cardiac ICU. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Single-center, cardiac ICU in Taiwan. PATIENTS: Patients over 20 years old with Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation II scores greater than or equal to 15 and/or ventilatory support in the cardiac ICU. INTERVENTIONS: We measured plasma phenylalanine levels serially during patients' stays in the ICU to investigate their prognostic value for 90-day mortality. Gene array was performed to identify genetic polymorphisms associated with SHP (phenylalanine level ≥ 11.2 µmol/dL) and to develop a Genetic Risk Score (GRS). We analyzed the associations between SHP and clinical factors and genetic variants and identified the correlation between pteridines and genetic variants. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The study enrolled 497 patients. Increased phenylalanine concentration was independently associated with increased mortality risk. Patients with SHP had a higher mortality risk compared with those without SHP (log rank = 41.13; p < 0.001). SHP was associated with hepatic and renal dysfunction and with genetic polymorphisms on the pathway of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) synthesis (CBR1 and AKR1C3) and recycling (PCBD2). Higher GRSs were associated with lower BH4 bioavailability in response to stress ( p < 0.05). In patients without SHP at baseline, those with GRSs gretaer than or equal to 2 had a higher frequency of developing SHP during the ICU stay (31.5% vs 16.1%; p = 0.001) and a higher mortality risk ( p = 0.004) compared with those with GRSs less than 2. In patients with SHP at baseline, genetic variants did not provide additional prognostic value. CONCLUSIONS: SHP in patients admitted to the ICU was associated with a worse prognosis. In patients without SHP, genetic polymorphisms associated with SHP measured using a GRS of greater than or equal to 2 was associated with the subsequent SHP and higher mortality risk.

BACKGROUND: Vision impairment is common among older adults, and it may be related to frailty. However, the longitudinal relationship between visual impairment and frailty is still unclear. METHODS: We used data from Round 1 to Round 5 from the National Health and Aging Trend Study. Two samples were community-dwelling older adults, sample 1 (without visual impairment) was classified according to whether they have pre-frailty/frailty at R1 (N = 3013) and sample 2 (without pre-frailty/frailty) was classified according to whether they have visual impairment at R1 (N = 1422), respectively. Frailty was measured using five criteria: experiencing exhaustion, unintentional weight loss, low physical activity, slow gait, and weak grip strength. Visual impairment was assessed by asking participants if they had any visual impairment. Generalized estimating equation models were used to examine the concurrent and lagged association between visual impairment and frailty. RESULTS: The participants were on average 76 ± 7 years old, female (59%), non-Hispanic white (74%) with less than bachelor educated (73%), and 44% were pre-frail/frail in the older adults without visual impairment. Approximately 5% of participants had visual impairment at R1, and they tended to be female and non-Hispanic White in the older adults without frailty. The concurrent (OR, 95% CI = 1.55, 1.17-2.02) and lagged (OR, 95% CI = 1.79, 1.25-2.59) associations between frailty and visual impairment were significantly after controlling the covariates. Similarly, the concurrent (OR, 95% CI = 1.63, 1.32-2.04) and lagged (OR, 95% CI = 1.49, 1.20-1.87) associations between visual impairment and frailty were also significant. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this study provides evidence for a longitudinal, bidirectional association between self-reported visual impairment and frailty. Future intervention programs to delay frailty progression should include strategies that may reduce the incidence of visual impairment.

BACKGROUND: Personality is associated with predictors of homebound status like frailty, incident falls, mobility, and depression. However, the relationship between personality traits and homebound status is unclear. This study aims to examine the longitudinal association between personality traits and homebound status among older adults. METHODS: Using data of non-homebound community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older in the 2013 and 2014 waves (baseline) of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (N = 1538), this study examined the association between personality traits and homebound status. Homebound status (non-homebound, semi-homebound, and homebound) was determined by the frequency of going outside, difficulty in going outside, and whether there was help when going outside. Personality traits, including conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, openness, and agreeableness were assessed using the 10-item Midlife Development Inventory on a rating scale from 1 (not at all) to 4 (a lot). Ordered logistic regression models were used to examine whether personality traits predicted homebound status in later 3 years with and without adjusting covariates. RESULTS: The sample was on average 77.0 ± 6.70 years old, and 55% were female. The majority were non-Hispanic whites (76%), and received some college or vocational school education or higher (55%). Homebound participants tended to be less educated older females. Three years later, 42 of 1538 baseline-non-homebound participants (3%) became homebound, and 195 participants (13%) became semi-homebound. Among these five personality traits, high conscientiousness (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.73, p < 0.01) was associated with a low likelihood of becoming homebound after adjusting demographic and health-related covariates. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provided a basis for personality assessment to identify and prevent individuals from becoming homebound.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown an association between homebound status and falls among older adults. However, this association was primarily drawn from cross-sectional studies. This study aimed to determine the bidirectional relationship between homebound status and falls among older adults in the community. METHODS: We used data of the community-dwelling older adults from 2011 to 2015 of the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a nationally representative survey of Medicare Beneficiaries in the United States (Sample 1 [No falls at baseline]: N = 2,512; Sample 2 [Non-homebound at baseline]: N = 2,916). Homebound status was determined by the frequency, difficulty, and needing help for outdoor mobility. Falls were ascertained by asking participants whether they had a fall in the last year. Generalized estimation equation models were used to examine the bidirectional association between homebound status and falls longitudinally. RESULTS: Participants with no falls at baseline (n = 2,512) were on average, 76.8 years old, non-Hispanic whites (70.1%), and female (57.1%). After adjusting for demographics and health-related variables, prior year homebound status significantly contributed to falls in the following year (Odds ratio [OR], 1.28, 95% CI: 1.09-1.51). Participants who were non-homebound at baseline (n = 2,916) were on average, 75.7 years old, non-Hispanic white (74.8%), and female (55.8%). Previous falls significantly predicted later homebound status (OR, 1.26, 95% CI: 1.10-1.45) in the full adjusted model. CONCLUSION: This is the first longitudinal study to determine the bidirectional association between homebound status and falls. Homebound status and falls form a vicious circle and mutually reinforce each other over time. Our findings suggest the importance of developing programs and community activities that reduce falls and improve homebound status among older adults.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depressive symptoms are associated with fear of falling and fear of falling-related activity restrictions. However, it remains unknown whether anxiety or depressive symptoms alone could predict fear of falling and activity restrictions in older adults. We sought to determine if anxiety and depressive symptoms alone could be an independent predictor of fear of falling and activity restrictions in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This longitudinal analysis used waves 5 (time 1, [T1]) and 6 (time 2, [T2], 1 year from T1) data (N = 6376) from the National Health and Aging Trends Study. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale 2 and Patient Health Questionnaire 2 were used to assess anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively. Interview questions included demographics, health-related data, and fall worry levels (no fear of falling, fear of falling but no activity restrictions, and activity restrictions). Using multinomial logistic regression models, we examined whether anxiety and depressive symptoms (T1) predicted fear of falling and activity restrictions (T2). RESULTS: In wave 5 (T1, mean age: 78 years, 58.1% female), 10 and 13% of participants reported anxiety and depressive symptoms. About 19% of participants experienced fear of falling but not activity restrictions, and 10% of participants developed activity restrictions in wave 6 (T2), respectively. Participants with anxiety symptoms at T1 had a 1.33 times higher risk of fear of falling (95% CI = 1.02-1.72) and 1.41 times higher risk of activity restrictions (95% CI = 1.04-1.90) at T2. However, having depressive symptoms did not show any significance after adjusting for anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Anxiety symptoms seemed to be an independent risk factor for future fear of falling and activity restrictions, while depressive symptoms were not. To prevent future fear of falling and activity restrictions, we should pay special attention to older individuals with anxiety symptoms.

After the Vietnam War, 1.3 million Vietnamese migrated to the U.S. where they are the fourth largest Asian American subgroup. However, little is known about their health compared to other Asian subgroups. As such, we developed the Vietnamese Aging and Care Survey to understand older Vietnamese immigrants' health in Houston, Texas (N=132). We examined how social support moderated the relationship between their physical disability and mental health (depressive symptoms and loneliness). Most respondents rated their health as fair/poor and more than half lived in extended family households or senior housing in ethnic enclaves. Having more physical disabilities was associated with higher depressive symptoms and loneliness, but higher social support moderated the effect of physical disability on loneliness. Local policymakers and stakeholders might strategize using the existing culturally and linguistically appropriate daycare centers and home and community-based services to mitigate depression and loneliness among older Vietnamese immigrants with physical disabilities.

AIMS: We examined the association between caregivers' psychological status and their older family members' (care recipients) mental health in the Vietnamese American community (N = 58 dyads). METHODS: Logistic regression models were used. RESULTS: Caregivers and care recipients were on average 53 and 75 years old, immigrated at ages 32 and 51, and had 10 and 6 years of formal education, respectively. Approximately two-thirds of caregivers provided care for 20+ h/week for 7 years with the majority of care recipients reporting fair or poor health. Care recipients' physical and cognitive health had a significant association with their depressive symptoms. However, care recipients acting as burdened caregivers' "company" helped themselves and felt less depressed (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.80, 0.99). CONCLUSION: Leveraging the tradition of Vietnamese multigeneration households, we should promote being a good company to each other that will help the caregiver-care recipient dyad, as well as their family unit when planning future interventions.
