RESUMEN

AIM: To construct a nursing assessment framework for patients in anaesthesia recovery period. DESIGN: A three-round modified Delphi method was employed to capture the consensus of 22 panellists. METHODS: The initial items in the nursing assessment framework for patients in anaesthesia recovery period were developed based on the mini-clinical evaluation exercise (mini-CEX). A panel of 22 experts participated in this study. The panellists have more than 10 years of experience in either clinical anaesthesia, or post-anesthesia nursing, or operating room nursing, or surgical intensive nursing. Between March and April 2023, the panellists evaluated and recommended revisions to the initial framework. RESULTS: This study resulted in the development of a nursing assessment framework for patients in anaesthesia recovery period. The initial version of the framework consisted of six dimensions with 27 items. Six items were modified after the first round of consultation. After the second round, five modifications and four deletions were made based on expert opinion. The third round resulted in a convergence of expert opinion. The framework, which consists of 24 items across five dimensions, was refined. The five dimensions are as follows: History-taking, Physical assessment, Clinical judgement, Organizational efficiency and Humanistic concern. CONCLUSION: The nursing assessment framework for patients in anaesthesia recovery period was reached consensus between the 22 experts' opinions. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: The assessment framework constructed in this study could be used for the process evaluation of post-anesthesia nursing. The framework may guide perianesthesia nurses in the timely and effective assessment of patients during this critical phase of care. It may be used for perianesthesia nursing education or to evaluate nurses' assessment skills. REPORTING METHOD: The study is reported in accordance with the Guidance on Conducting and Reporting DElphi Studies (CREDES) recommendations. Vertical van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have shown potential for gas sensing owing to their remarkable sensitivity. However, the optimization process for achieving the best gas sensing performance is complicated by the heterostructure's reliance on both physical and electrical characteristics. This study employs density functional theory (DFT) to analyse the structural and electronic parameters of a MoTe2/InN vdW heterostructure. The findings of this study indicate that the vdW heterostructure has a type-II band alignment with higher adsorption energy towards NH3, NO2, and SO2 than the individual monolayers. In specific, the heterostructure is well suited for NO2 detection but has limitations in reliably detecting NH3 and SO2 due to longer recovery times. We find significant hybridization between the adsorbate and interacting surfaces' orbitals and a notable presence of NO2 molecular orbitals in proximity to the Fermi level. Additionally, dielectric and work function modulations offer a viable means to develop optical-based gas sensors that can selectively detect NO2. Our research provides valuable insights into vdW heterostructure design for high-performance gas sensors.

RESUMEN

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a highly contagious nucleocytoplasmic large DNA virus (NCLDV) that causes nearly 100% mortality in swine. The development of effective vaccines and drugs against this virus is urgently needed. pA104R, an ASFV-derived histone-like protein, shares sequence and functional similarity with bacterial HU/IHF family members and is essential for viral replication. Herein, we solved the crystal structures of pA104R in its apo state as well as in complex with DNA. Apo-pA104R forms a homodimer and folds into an architecture conserved in bacterial heat-unstable nucleoid proteins/integration host factors (HUs/IHFs). The pA104R-DNA complex structure, however, uncovers that pA104R has a DNA binding pattern distinct from its bacterial homologs, that is, the ß-ribbon arms of pA104R stabilize DNA binding by contacting the major groove instead of the minor groove. Mutations of the basic residues at the base region of the ß-strand DNA binding region (BDR), rather than those in the ß-ribbon arms, completely abolished DNA binding, highlighting the major role of the BDR base in DNA binding. An overall DNA bending angle of 93.8° is observed in crystal packing of the pA104R-DNA complex structure, which is close to the DNA bending angle in the HU-DNA complex. Stilbene derivatives SD1 and SD4 were shown to disrupt the binding between pA104R and DNA and inhibit the replication of ASFV in primary porcine alveolar macrophages. Collectively, these results reveal the structural basis of pA104R binding to DNA highlighting the importance of the pA104R-DNA interaction in the ASFV replication cycle and provide inhibitor leads for ASFV chemotherapy.

In response to the application requirements of secondary batteries at low temperature, an all-organic dual-ion battery with calcium perchlorate contained acetonitrile as the electrolyte (CAN-ODIB) is fabricated in this work. The electrochemical energy is stored in CAN-ODIB via the association and disassociation of calcium and perchlorate ions in perylene diimide-ethylene diamine/carbon black composite based anode and polytriphenylamine based cathode with highly reversible redox states. Benefiting from the energy storage mechanism, CAN-ODIB exhibits excellent electrochemical performances in tests with the temperature ranging from 25 to -50 °C. Especially, CAN-ODIB at -50 °C reserves ≈61% of the capacity at 25 °C (83.4 mA h g-1 ) with the current density of 0.2 A g-1 . CAN-ODIB also shows excellent cycling stability at low temperature by retaining 90.3% of the initial capacity at 1.0 A g-1 after 450 charge-discharge cycles at -30 °C. The impedance analysis of CAN-ODIB at different temperatures indicates that the low temperature performance of CAN-ODIB depends more on the electrode materials than the electrolyte, which provides the important guidance for the further design of secondary batteries operable at low temperatures.

While various cellular responses to materials have been published, little concerns the deformation of cell nuclei. Herein we fabricated a polymeric micropillar array of appropriate dimensions to trigger the significant self-deformation of cell nuclei and examined six cell types, which could be classified into cancerous cells (Hela and HepG2) versus healthy cells (HCvEpC, MC3T3-E1, NIH3T3, and hMSC) or epithelial-like cells (Hela, HepG2, and HCvEpC) versus fibroblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1, NIH3T3, and hMSC). While all of the cell types exhibited severe nuclear deformation on the poly(lactide- co-glycolide) (PLGA) micropillar array, the difference between the epithelial-like and fibroblast-like cells was much more significant than that between the cancerous and healthy cells. We also examined the statistics of nuclear shape indexes of cells with an inevitable dispersity of nuclear sizes. It was found that larger nuclei favored more significant deformation on the micropillar array for each cell type. In the same region of nuclear size, the parts of the epithelial-like cells exhibited more significant nuclear deformation than those of the fibroblast-like cells. Hence, this article reports the nuclear size dependence of the self-deformation of cell nuclei on micropillar arrays for the first time and meanwhile strengthens the cell-type dependence.

Cellular responses on a topographic surface are fundamental topics about interfaces and biology. Herein, a poly(lactide- co-glycolide) (PLGA) micropillar array was prepared and found to trigger significant self-deformation of cell nuclei. The time-dependent cell viability and thus cell proliferation was investigated. Despite significant nuclear deformation, all of the examined cell types (Hela, HepG2, MC3T3-E1, and NIH3T3) could survive and proliferate on the micropillar array yet exhibited different proliferation abilities. Compared to the corresponding groups on the smooth surface, the cell proliferation abilities on the micropillar array were decreased for Hela and MC3T3-E1 cells and did not change significantly for HepG2 and NIH3T3 cells. We also found that whether the proliferation ability changed was related to whether the nuclear sizes decreased in the micropillar array, and thus the size deformation of cell nuclei should, besides shape deformation, be taken into consideration in studies of cells on topological surfaces.

Polyhedral-like NiMn-layered double hydroxide/porous carbon (NiMn-LDH/PC-x) composites are successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method (x = 1, 2 means different mass percent of porous carbon (PC) in composites). The NiMn-LDH/PC-1 composites possess specific capacitance 1634 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 , and it is much better than that of pure LDH (1095 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 ). Besides, the sample can retain 84.58% of original capacitance after 3000 cycles at 15 A g-1 . An asymmetric supercapacitor with NiMn-LDH/PC-1 as anode and activated carbon as cathode is fabricated, and the supercapacitor can achieve an energy density of 18.60 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 225.03 W kg-1 . The enhanced electrochemical performance attributes to the high faradaic pseudocapacitance of NiMn-LDH, the introduction of PC, and the 3D porous structure of LDH/PC-1 composites. The introduction of PC hinders serious agglomeration of LDH and further accelerates ions transport. The encouraging results indicate that these materials are one of the most potential candidates for energy storage devices.

Postoperative intra-abdominal adhesion is one of the most common complications in the postoperative period. Current remedies are very ineffective to prevent the pathological outcomes except steroid hormones. Rhynchophylline is deemed as a pharmacologically active component from traditional Oriental medicine Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Jacks. (Rubiaceae). This study was designed to investigate the preventative effect of rhynchophylline on the abdominal adhesions in rats. Rhynchophylline relieved the experimental abdominal adhesion and decreased the levels of interleukin-1 ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the blood serum in a dose-dependent manner. The levels of transforming growth factor- ß1 (TGF-ß1) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) were reduced significantly in the peritoneal fluid. The potential mechanism of the activity is related to inhibition of the TGF- ß1/Smad signaling pathway.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a wavelength and bandwidth-tunable comb filter based on silicon Sagnac loop mirrors (SLMs) with Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) couplers. By thermally tuning the MZI couplers in common and differential modes, the phase shift and reflectivity of the SLMs can be changed, respectively, leading to tunable wavelength and bandwidth of the comb filter. The fabricated comb filter has 93 comb lines in the wavelength range from 1535 nm to 1565 nm spaced by ~0.322 nm. The central wavelength can be red-shifted by ~0.462 nm with a tuning efficiency of ~0.019 nm/mW. A continuously tunable bandwidth from 5.88 GHz to 24.89 GHz is also achieved with a differential heating power ranging from 0.00 mW to 0.53 mW.

We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 µm.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the dynamic changes in the main regulatory genes of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore in E. tenella host cells. Primary chick embryo cecum epithelial cell culture techniques, spectrophotometer technology, Hoechst-Annexin V-PI apoptosis staining and ELISA were used to detect the apoptosis rate and dynamic changes of Bcl-2, Bcl-xl, Bax, Bak, Bid, Bad, HK-II, and ATP content in E. tenella host cells at 4, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h. The rates of early apoptosis, late apoptosis, and necrosis of group T0 were significantly lower (P < 0.05) or highly significantly lower (P < 0.01) than those of group C at 4 h, but higher (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) at varying degrees than those of the same group at 24-120 h. Compared to group C, the amount of Bcl-2, ATP, Bax and Bad in group T0 were visibly lower (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) at 4 h, whereas Bcl-xl/Bax was highly significantly higher (P < 0.01) at 4 h. In addition, group T0 had less ATP at 24-120 h than group C, whereas the amount of Bcl-2, Bcl-xl, Bax, Bak, Bid, Bad and HK-II in group T0 inversely increased in varying degrees at 24-120 h compared with group C. Moreover, Bcl-2/Bax was lower (P < 0.01) at 24, 48, and 96 h, and Bcl-xl/Bax was lower (P < 0.05) at 48 h in group T0 than in group C, respectively. Taken together, these observations indicate that in the early developmental stages of E. tenella, the host-cell apoptosis rate decreased; although the amount of anti- and pro-apoptotic genes in host cells decreased, the ratios of anti-apoptotic to pro-apoptotic bcl-2 gene-family members increased. In the middle and later developmental stages of E. tenella, the host-cell apoptosis rate increased; the amount of anti- and pro-apoptotic genes increased, while the ratios of anti-apoptotic to pro-apoptotic bcl-2 gene-family members decreased. In addition, ATP decreased at all developmental stages of E. tenella.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we demonstrate a holographic polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal grating fabricated using a visible laser. As blue phase is stabilized by the interfered light, polymer-concentration gradient is achieved simultaneously. With the application of a uniform vertical electric field, periodic index distribution is obtained due to polymer-concentration gradient. The grating exhibits several attractive features such as polarization-independency, a broad temperature range, sub-millisecond response, simple fabrication, and low cost, thus holding great potential for photonics applications.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a microfiber-graphene device. Owing to the interaction between the graphene film and the evanescent field leaked from the microfiber, the hybrid photoconductive device exhibits a high photoresponse. A maximum photocurrent responsivity of ~2.81 mA/W is achieved in the telecommunication band. A nearly flat photoresponse spectrum within broad operational band ranging from 1500 nm to 1600 nm is also obtained as a consequence of the dispersionless and flat absorption of graphene. These results show that the proposed photocurrent generation device could provide an effective solution for broadband photodetection.

We propose a new ultracompact CMOS-compatible variable-transmission spatial light valve based on a silicon-graphene hybrid structure. Normally incident ∼1560 nm light can be coupled to a silicon-graphene-based 1D photonic crystal cavity through a perturbation-based diffractive coupling scheme. The lightwave modulation is achieved by tuning the Fermi level of the graphene, which can change both the loss and the resonant wavelength of the cavity. Based on finite-difference time-domain simulation, the modulation depth is larger than 10 dB with driving voltage of about 4.8 V(pp) while the modulation speed is estimated to be higher than 45 GHz.

Nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon microfibers (NMCMFs) were prepared via an evaporation-induced tri-consistent assembly of a triblock copolymer, resols and prehydrolyzed tetraethoxy silane on natural silk followed by pyrolysis. The resultant NMCMFs inherit the advantages of both order mesoporous carbons (OMCs) and carbon microfibers (CMFs), such as uniform meso-channels, high surface area, high nitrogen content, excellent electronic conductivity as well as good flexibility. Owing to the well-designed nanostructure and the synergistic effects of the strongly coupled components, the binder-free electrodes based on NMCMFs exhibit enhanced capacity (189 F g(-1) at 5 mV s(-1)), excellent rate capability (107 F g(-1) at 100 mV s(-1)) and durability (maintained over 96% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles) in electric double-layer capacitors, outperforming those of OMCs and CMFs derived from pristine silk.

Depression and related mood disorders are among the world's greatest public health problems. Previous studies have demonstrated that astilbin (AST) has broad pharmacological functions which may modulate numerous pathways, such as antioxidant, scavenging free radicals, anti-inflammatory and so on, similarly to some of other flavonoids. In this study, the antidepressant-like effect of AST was investigated using chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model of depression in mice. The results showed that chronic administration of AST at doses of 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg (intraperitoneally (i.p.), 21 d) reduced depressive-like behaviors of mice in the forced swim test (FST), tail suspension test (TST) and sucrose preference test (SPT) without affecting locomotor activity. AST increased the contents of serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) in the frontal cortex of CUMS mice. Additionally, it was shown that AST treatment restored the CUMS-induced inhibition of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 and AKT phosphorylation in the frontal cortex, conformed to the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression. Our findings suggest that AST has antidepressant activities and the mechanisms, at least in part, relate to up-regulation of monoaminergic neurotransmitters (5-HT and DA) and activation of the BDNF signaling pathway.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is critical for tumor invasion and many other cell-relevant processes. While much progress has been made about EMT, no report concerns the EMT of cells on topological biomaterial interfaces with significant nuclear deformation. Herein, we prepared a poly(lactide-co-glycolide) micropillar array with an appropriate dimension to enable significant deformation of cell nuclei and examined EMT of a human lung cancer epithelial cell (A549). We show that A549 cells undergo serious nuclear deformation on the micropillar array. The cells express more E-cadherin and less vimentin on the micropillar array than on the smooth surface. After transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) treatment, the expression of E-cadherin as an indicator of the epithelial phenotype is decreased and the expression of vimentin as an indicator of the mesenchymal phenotype is increased for the cells both on smooth surfaces and on micropillar arrays, indicating that EMT occurs even when the cell nuclei are deformed and the culture on the micropillar array more enhances the expression of vimentin. Expression of myosin phosphatase targeting subunit 1 is reduced in the cells on the micropillar array, possibly affecting the turnover of myosin light chain phosphorylation and actin assembly; this makes cells on the micropillar array prefer the epithelial-like phenotype and more sensitive to TGF-ß1. Overall, the micropillar array exhibits a promoting effect on the EMT.

A novel label-free colorimetric strategy was reported for sensitive detection of copper ions (Cu(2+)) by using the decelerating etching of gold nanorods (GNRs). H2O2 was employed as the oxidant for corrosion of GNRs, leading to the decrease of the aspect ratio of GNRs. In the absence of Cu(2+), the redox corrosion of GNRs by H2O2 occurred rapidly, causing the distinct color change of GNRs from bluish green to purplish red. By virtue of the strong and specific catalysis by Cu(2+) of the decomposition of H2O2, the rate of redox corrosion can be decelerated. Relevant experimental parameters, including pH value, concentrations of NaSCN and H2O2, incubation temperature and time were evaluated. Under optimal conditions, our method gave a good linear range of 10-300 nM (R = 0.9985) for Cu(2+) and the detection limit with the naked eye is as low as 10 nM. Thus, the proposed colorimetric sensor is simple, sensitive (4.96 nM) and selective, and it has been successfully applied to detect Cu(2+) in shellfish samples. Moreover, the potential mechanism was also discussed.

AIM: To evaluate the differences in professional competence development between nursing students in routine clinical practice and those who experienced four additional in-situ simulations. BACKGROUND: The amount of clinical practice time available to nursing students is limited. Occasionally, clinical settings do not provide all of the content that nursing students are expected to acquire. In high-risk clinical scenarios, such as the postanesthesia care unit, clinical practice may not provide sufficient context for students to develop the professional competence. DESIGN: This was a non-blinded, non-randomized, quasi-experimental study. The study was conducted in the postanesthesia care unit of a tertiary hospital in China between April 2021 and December 2022. Nursing students' self-assessed professional competence development and faculty-assessed clinical judgment were used as indicators. METHODS: A total of 30 final year undergraduate nursing students were divided into two groups according to the time they arrived at the unit for their clinical practice. Nursing students in the control group followed the routine teaching protocol of the unit. Students in the simulation group received four additional in-situ simulations during the second and third weeks of their practice in addition to the routine program. Nursing students self-assessed their postanesthesia care unit professional competence at the end of the first and fourth weeks. At the end of the fourth week, the nursing students were evaluated on their clinical judgment. RESULTS: Nursing students in both groups scored higher on the professional competence at the end of the fourth week than at the end of the first week and there was a trend of higher competence improvement in the simulation group than in the control group. For clinical judgment, nursing students in the simulation group scored higher than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: In-situ simulation contributes to the development of professional competence and clinical judgment of nursing students during their clinical practice in the postanesthesia care unit.
