RESUMEN

Observational and Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have established links between dyslipidemia and select cancer susceptibilities. However, there is a lack of comprehensive exploration of causal relationships spanning diverse cancer types. Here, we conducted a two-sample MR analysis to elucidate the causative connections between 9 blood lipid metabolic profiles (namely, adiponectin, leptin, lipoprotein A, apolipoprotein A1, apolipoprotein B, cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol) and 21 site-specific cancer risks. Our findings reveal genetically predicted adiponectin levels to be associated with a reduced ovarian cancer risk, while genetically determined leptin increases bladder cancer risk but decreases prostate cancer risk. Lipoprotein A elevates risk of prostate cancer while diminishing risk of endometrial cancer, while apolipoprotein A1 heightens risks of breast and cervical cancers. Furthermore, elevated levels of cholesterol are positively correlated with kidney cancer, and triglycerides demonstrate a positive association with non-melanoma skin cancer but a negative association with breast cancer. Protective effects of genetically predicted LDL-cholesterol on endometrial cancer and adverse effects of HDL-cholesterol on breast cancer are also observed. Our study conclusively establishes that blood lipid metabolic profiles exert causal effects on cancer susceptibility, providing more robust evidence for cancer prevention and prompting contemplation regarding the future health of the human populace.

RESUMEN

The soil selenium (Se) content and bioavailability are important for human health. In this regard, knowing the factors driving the concentration of total Se and bioavailable Se in soils is essential to map Se, enhance foodstuffs' Se content, and improve the Se nutritional status of humans. In this study, total Se and Se bioavailability (i.e., phosphate extracted Se) in surface soils (0-20 cm) developed on different strata were analyzed in a Se-enriched region of Southwest China. Furthermore, the interaction between the stratum and soil properties was assessed and how did the stratum effect on the concentration and spatial distribution of Se bioavailability in soils was investigated. Results showed that the median concentration of total Se in soils was 0.308 mg/kg, which is higher than China's soil background. The mean proportion of phosphate extracted Se in total Se was 12.2 %. The values of total Se, phosphate extracted Se, and soil organic matter (SOM) in soils increased with the increasing stratum age. In contrast, the coefficient of weathering and eluviation (BA) values decreased. The analysis of statistics and Geodetector revealed that the SOM, stratum, and BA were the dominant controlling factors for the contents and distributions of soil total Se and phosphate extracted Se. This study provided strong evidence that the soil properties that affected the total Se and Se bioavailability were modulated by the local geological background, and had important practical implications for addressing Se malnutrition and developing the Se-rich resource in the study region and similar geological settings in different parts of the globe.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a great risk factor for developing asthma, and its pathogenesis is affected by various factors, such as gene and environment. GSDMB is related to allergic diseases. Our purpose is to explore the correlation of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in GSDMB and AR risk in the Chinese population. METHODS: We performed a case-control study including 1005 cases and 1004 controls. Rs2305479, rs4795400, and rs12450091 in GSDMB were geneotyped using Agena MassARRAY. The relationships between GSDMB SNPs and AR risk were assessed by logistic regression analysis in PLINK1.9. RESULTS: Our study showed that rs4795400 was a protective factor for AR in overall (TT vs. CC: OR = 0.66, p = 0.009; TT vs. CC/TC: OR = 0.67, p = 0.008; additive: OR = 0.87, p = 0.042 males, people with BMI ≤ 24, and living in wind-blown sand area. Rs2305479 was associated with a reduced AR risk in males (TT vs. CC: OR = 0.47, p = 0.014; TT vs. CC/TC: OR = 0.43, p = 0.004). However, rs12450091 was a risk factor for AR in people living in the loess hilly region (CC: OR = 4.75, p = 0.047). The levels of EO and EO_per in the case group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study indicated that GSDMB polymorphisms (rs4795400, rs2305479, and rs12450091) were associated with AR susceptibility. Further studies are required to confirm our findings and to clarify the functional relationship.

RESUMEN

DNA-based Boolean logic computing has emerged as a leading technique in biosensing, diagnosis, and therapeutics. Due to the development of the biological and chemical methods, especially the toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement (TMSD) reaction, different logic gates as well as circuits can be performed. However, most of these methods have been conducted at the bulk level, which may lead to missing information and be less controllable. Herein, we engineered single-molecule DNA computing controlled by stretching forces using magnetic tweezers. By tracking the real-time signals of the DNA extension, the output can be determined at a single base-pair resolution. A kinetics-controllable TMSD reaction was realized in the range of a ∼19-fold change of the reaction rate by different stretching forces. OR, AND, and NOT gates were also achieved. In addition, resettable DNA computing using force stretching cycles has been further exemplified. Overall, such a real-time, label-free, and force-controlled single-molecule DNA computing system provided new insight into molecular computing.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on European (EUR) samples have obtained inconsistent results regarding the genetic correlation between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Schizophrenia (SCZ). A large-scale trans-ethnic genetic analysis may provide additional evidence with enhanced power. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the genetic basis for both T2DM and SCZ based on large-scale genetic analyses of genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from both East Asian (EAS) and EUR subjects. METHODS: A range of complementary approaches were employed to cross-validate the genetic correlation between T2DM and SCZ at the whole genome, autosomes (linkage disequilibrium score regression, LDSC), loci (Heritability Estimation from Summary Statistics, HESS), and causal variants (MiXeR and Mendelian randomization, MR) levels. Then, genome-wide and transcriptome-wide cross-trait/ethnic meta-analyses were performed separately to explore the effective shared organs, cells and molecular pathways. RESULTS: A weak genome-wide negative genetic correlation between SCZ and T2DM was found for the EUR (rg = - 0.098, P = 0.009) and EAS (rg =- 0.053 and P = 0.032) populations, which showed no significant difference between the EUR and EAS populations (P = 0.22). After Bonferroni correction, the rg remained significant only in the EUR population. Similar results were obtained from analyses at the levels of autosomes, loci and causal variants. 25 independent variants were firstly identified as being responsible for both SCZ and T2DM. The variants associated with the two disorders were significantly correlated to the gene expression profiles in the brain (P = 1.1E-9) and pituitary gland (P = 1.9E-6). Then, 61 protein-coding and non-coding genes were identified as effective genes in the pituitary gland (P < 9.23E-6) and were enriched in metabolic pathways related to glutathione mediated arsenate detoxification and to D-myo-inositol-trisphosphate. CONCLUSION: Here, we show that a negative genetic correlation exists between SCZ and T2DM at the whole genome, autosome, locus and causal variant levels. We identify pituitary gland as a common effective organ for both diseases, in which non-protein-coding effective genes, such as lncRNAs, may be responsible for the negative genetic correlation. This highlights the importance of molecular metabolism and neuroendocrine modulation in the pituitary gland, which may be responsible for the initiation of T2DM in SCZ patients.

RESUMEN

The use of selenium (Se)-rich soils in China is an effective method for rural revitalization, but assessment of heavy metals is essential prior to the development of Se-rich soils. This study was focused on the Jiangjin district, a typical Se-rich area located in Sichuan Basin of China, to investigate contamination, influencing factors, and sources of As, Cr, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn based on 156 topsoil samples. This study analyzed and compared the enrichment factor (EF), Nemerow index (PN), geographical information system (GIS), and positive matrix factorization (PMF). Results demonstrate that the average values of As, Cu, Cd, Sb, and Zn in topsoil were higher than the soil background values of western Chongqing by approximately 1.75, 1.11, 1.27, 1.71, and 2.58 times, respectively, indicating that some heavy metals have been enriched in the soils. The polluted areas of As, Cu, Cd, and Zn in topsoil were mainly distributed in the northern and central Jiangjin district, whereas high-Sb soils were located in the southeast. The Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Sb were concentrated in Se-rich soils, indicating that heavy metals pollution should be carefully considered for the utilization of Se-rich soils. Four potential sources of heavy metals were found in this study area: 1) the parent materials (Cr, Ni, Cu); 2) industrial activities with high coal consumption (As); 3) mechanical and chemical industrial activities (Zn, Sb); and 4) transportation and agricultural activities (Pb, Cd). These observations provide a scientific basis for the development, utilization, and protection of Se-rich soil resources.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although it has been confirmed that IL1RL1 is involved in the occurrence of allergic rhinitis (AR), the role of IL1RL1 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in AR is still unclear. METHODS: We performed a case-control study including 1000 AR patients and 1000 healthy controls. The four SNPs rs72823628 G > A, rs950881 G > T, rs72823641 T > A and rs3771175 T > A in IL1RL1 were chosen and genotyped using Agena MassARRAY platform. The relationship between IL1RL1 SNPs and AR risk was analyzed by logistic regression and assessed with odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). RESULTS: Overall analysis revealed that IL1RL1 gene rs72823628, rs950881 and rs3771175 were associated with a reduced AR risk. Stratified analysis showed that the three SNPs (rs72823628, rs950881 and rs3771175) were obviously linked to a reduced risk of AR in males. Moreover, no correlation was observed between haplotypes and reduced AR risk after the false discovery rate (FDR) correction. The false positive report probability (FPRP) analysis was used to further validate significant findings. CONCLUSION: Our study is the first to indicate that IL1RL1 gene polymorphisms (rs72823628, rs950881 and rs3771175) may be correlated with decreased risk of AR in the Chinese Han population.

RESUMEN

Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a process whereby an initial ischemia injury and subsequent recovery of blood flow, which leads to the propagation of an innate immune response and the changes of structural and functional of multiple organs. Therefore, IRI is considered to be a great challenge in clinical treatment such as organ transplantation or coronary angioplasty. In recent years, ethyl pyruvate (EP), a derivative of pyruvate, has received great attention because of its stability and low toxicity. Previous studies have proved that EP has various pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammation, anti-oxidative stress, anti-apoptosis, and anti-fibrosis. Compelling evidence has indicated EP plays a beneficial role in a variety of acute injury models, such as brain IRI, myocardial IRI, renal IRI, and hepatic IRI. Moreover, EP can not only effectively inhibit multiple IRI-induced pathological processes, but also improve the structural and functional lesion of tissues and organs. In this study, we review the recent progress in the research on EP and discuss their implications for a better understanding of multiple organ IRI, and the prospects of targeting the EP for therapeutic intervention.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Objective measures used for the differential diagnosis and severity assessment of allergic rhinitis (AR) are still lacking. The involvement of hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) in the development of AR indicates that nasal exhaled H2 S (NeH2 S) has potential as a biomarker to be used in AR patients. This study aimed to evaluate the application value of NeH2 S measurement in the diagnosis and assessment of AR. METHODS: This study was a multi-center cross-sectional survey conducted in Northwestern China. Demographic information collection and rhinitis assessment were completed through questionnaires. The level of NeH2 S and serum immunoglobulin E were measured. RESULTS: The level of NeH2 S in general population ranged from 0 to 35 ppb, with a median value of 2 ppb. The NeH2 S levels in seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) patients were significantly lower than those in general population (2 [1, 2.75] vs. 2 [2, 3] ppb; p = .023), and the NeH2 S value of the SAR group tended to be lower than that of the non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) group (2 [1, 2.75] vs. 2 [2, 3] ppb; p = .094). The subgroup of AR patients with symptoms lasting longer than 2 weeks per month had a lower NeH2 S level compared with the subgroup of patients with symptoms lasting less than 2 weeks per month (2 [1, 2] vs. 2 [2, 3] ppb; p = .015). CONCLUSION: This study described the distribution range of NeH2 S levels in the general population. Further study with larger sample size was needed to clarify the relationship between NeH2 S level and AR.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Whether autonomic dysfunction contributes to cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between CSVD and blood pressure variability (BPV) and heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: This case-control study recruited 50 patients with CSVD and 50 non-CSVD hypertensive age- and gender-matched controls. All participants completed a 24-h ambulatory electrocardiogram recording and ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM). Differences in HRV and BPV between the two groups were examined. BPV indices assessed by ABPM included mean systolic BP (SBP), mean diastolic BP (DBP), coefficient of variation and weighted standard deviation of SBP and DBP. RESULTS: CSVD patients had significant higher 24-h mean systolic BP (SBP), 24-h mean diastolic BP (DBP), daytime mean SBP, nocturnal mean SBP, and nocturnal mean DBP (P < .05 for all). CSVD patients had a significant lower nocturnal SBP fall rate compared with controls (median: 1.0 versus 6.2, respectively; P < .001) and were more likely to be non-dippers and reverse dippers. There were no differences in HRV variables between the two groups. Five logistic models were built to explore the correlations between BPV indices and CSVD. BPV indices were separately entered into the logistic regression models, together with hyperlipidemia, ischemic stroke history, current use of anti-hypertensive agents, and serum blood urea nitrogen. In models 1-3, 24-h mean SBP and nocturnal mean SBP and DBP were significantly correlated with CSVD (r2 = 0.308-0.340). In model 4, the nocturnal SBP fall rate was negatively correlated with CSVD (odds ratio [OR] = 0.871, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.804-0.943; P = .001), with r2 = 0.415 fitting the model. In model 5, the pattern of SBP dipping was significantly associated with CSVD, with non-dipper (OR = 8.389, 95%CI = 1.489-47.254; P = .016) and reverse dipper (OR = 27.008, 95%CI = 3.709-196.660; P = .001) having the highest risks of CSVD (r2 = 0.413). CONCLUSIONS: Lower nocturnal SBP fall rate is associated with CSVD. Non-dipper and reverse dipper hypertensive patients have a higher risk of CSVD.

RESUMEN

Pesticide and heavy metal contaminants, such as chlorpyrifos (CP) and cadmium (Cd) in farmland drainage had caused the water pollution and attracted extensive concerns around the world. The incorporation of zeolite-based iron-carbon (ZB-IC) into constructed wetlands (CWs) was prepared to simultaneously remove chlorpyrifos (CP) and cadmium (Cd) in farmland drainage, and the interaction of CP degradation and Cd removal was investigated. Laboratory simulated experiments were carried out in this study, and the results presented that the removal efficiencies of CP and Cd by ZB-IC coupled CWs (ZB-IC-CW) were 99.55% and 98.59%, respectively, which were much higher than that of the zeolite-based (ZB) CWs (CP = 92.99%; Cd = 63.54%). The removal mechanism of CP and Cd by ZB-IC substrate was mainly attributed to electron transfer, which occurred from iron corrosion and hydrogen generation process. In addition, CP could act as carbon source to promote denitrification process. Microbial analysis revealed that the relative abundances of CP-resistant bacteria (Firmicutes, Clostridia and Acetobacterium), Cd-resistant bacteria (Bacteroidetes) and denitrifying bacteria (Proteobacteria and Patescibacteria) were dramatically increased due to the addition of ZB-IC. The higher czcA gene and opd gene in ZB-IC-CW demonstrated that the addition of CP played a positive role in Cd removal, while Cd showed slightly affect to CP removal.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) provides an approximate assessment of tissue perfusion and shows prominent hypointense cortical veins in the ischemic territory because of the increased concentration of deoxyhemoglobin. We aimed to evaluate whether asymmetrical prominent cortical vein sign (APCVS) on SWI can predict early neurological deterioration (END) in acute ischemic stroke patients with severe intracranial arterial stenosis or occlusion (SIASO). METHODS: One hundred and nine acute ischemic stroke patients with SIASO who underwent SWI were retrospectively recruited. END was defined as an increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score ≧2 points despite standard treatment in the first 72 h after admission. The APCVS was defined as more and/or large vessels with greater signal loss than those in the opposite hemisphere on SWI. RESULTS: Thirty out of the 109 (27.5%) patients developed END. Sixty (55.0%) patients presented with APCVS on SWI. APCVS occurred in 24 (80%) patients with END, whereas it only occurred in 36 (45.6%) patients without END (P = 0.001). Patients with APCVS were more likely to have END (40.0%, vs. 12.2%, P = 0.001) than those without END. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that APCVS (OR = 4.349, 95% C.I. = 1.580-11.970, P = 0.004) was a significant predictor of END in acute ischemic stroke patients with SIASO, adjusted for previous stroke history and acute infarct volume. CONCLUSIONS: In acute ischemic stroke patients with SIASO, the APCVS might be a useful neuroimaging marker for predicting END, which suggests the importance of evaluation of perfusion status.

RESUMEN

Fluoride is an essential trace element for humans, and its deficiency or excess in the environment could lead to disease. To investigate the spatial distribution and health risk assessment of fluoride (F-) in drinking water, 302 tap water samples from Chongqing urban areas, China, were collected to analyze F- using an ion chromatograph. The results showed that (1) F- concentration in drinking water ranged from 0.100 to 0.503 mg/L, with an average of 0.238 ± 0.045 mg/L. (2) The spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that high-low clusters were mostly located in Dadukou District and Beibei District, while low-low clusters were mainly in southern Banan District. (3) The fluoride average daily doses of children, teens and adults were 0.030, 0.029 and 0.031 mg/(kg day). (4) Hazard quotients of excessive fluoride (HQe) of children, teens and adults were 0.51 ± 09, 0.49 ± 0.09 and 0.52 ± 0.10, respectively (inferior to 1.00), whereas hazard quotients of inadequate fluoride (HQi) of those groups were 1.21 ± 0.26, 1.23 ± 0.26 and 1.15 ± 0.25, respectively (superior to 1.00). Therefore, average daily fluoride intake of residents with drinking water was inadequate. This could pose dental caries and osteoporosis threats for residents from Chongqing urban areas.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between small vessel disease (SVD) burden, a combination of multiple SVD markers and cognitive dysfunction after stroke. METHODS: The study sample comprised 451 patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke. Cognitive functions were assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) at 3, 9, and 15 months after the index stroke. Cognitive impairment was defined as an MMSE score of ≤26. A total SVD score, indicating SVD burden, was constructed by summing the scores of the 4 SVD markers (white matter hyperintensities [WMHs], lacunes, cerebral microbleeds, and perivascular spaces) ascertained by magnetic resonance imaging (range: 0-4). The association between SVD burden and cognitive dysfunction was assessed with linear mixed models or generalized estimating equation models, as appropriate. RESULTS: The majority of patients had mild-to-moderate stroke and at least one identifiable SVD marker. Cognitive impairment was found in about one-third of patients. After adjusting for confounding factors, the SVD burden was associated with MMSE scores (ß = -0.37, P = .003) and cognitive impairment (odds ratio [OR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02-1.42). SVD burden was specifically associated with the performance of MMSE subscores including orientation to place and time, calculation, and word recall. Of the SVD markers, WMHs was the most robust predictor of decrease in MMSE scores (ß = -0.25, P = .01) and cognitive impairment (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.01-1.29). CONCLUSION: Cerebral SVD burden is associated with decreased MMSE scores, suggesting cognitive dysfunction during the first year after mild-to-moderate acute ischemic stroke.

RESUMEN

A single particle aerosol mass spectrometer was deployed to measure the changes of single particle species and sizes during March 2015 in Weizhou Island of the Beibu Gulf, Guangxi province, South China. In this campaign, a total of 3,100,597 particles were sized, and 25.8% particles with both positive and negative mass spectrum were collected and 24.8% characterized in combination with the ART-2a neural network algorithm. The distribution of sized particles was mainly in from 520 to 600nm, and the diameters ranging from 340 to 1000nm accounted for above 90%. Eight types of particles were classified: Elemental Carbon containing (EC), Organic Carbon containing (OC), EC and OC combined containing particles, Na containing particles, K containing particles (K), Levoglucosan containing particles, mineral containing particles, and Heavy Metal containing particles (HM). EC, OC and K were the major containing particles, which accounted for 84.3% in the eight types particles. The relative ratio and size distribution of the three types were EC (48.1%, 620nm), OC (12.7%, 440nm), and K (23.5%, 600nm), respectively. The three types of particles were a bit increasing ratios compared with those in clean periods during haze pollution periods. Combined with the back-trajectory results from the Hysplit-4 model and local pollution sources revealed that the ambient air quality on the Weizhou Island may be influenced by biomass burning in the Indochina Peninsula (biomass burning in the Indochina Peninsula) from the transportation on higher level atmospheric layer and by mainland of south China located northeast of Weizhou Island on the ground.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: HPV infection is the major pathogenic factor underlying cervical cancer and precancerous lesions. The cervical HPV infection rates in gynaecological outpatients from Hangzhou, China, were studied in the period from January 2011 to December 2015. METHODS: Exfoliated cervical cells were harvested from gynaecological outpatients in Hangzhou from January 2011 to December 2015. Twenty-one HPV subtypes were detected using flow-through hybridization. The HPV infection rates in various disease groups were compared using the Chi-square test. The infection rates of different HPV subtypes in different calendar years and in different age groups were analysed using the linear-by-linear association test and gamma value. RESULTS: A total of 43,804 patients were recruited, of whom 9752 (22.3%) were infected with HPV. The top five among the 21 HPV subtypes detected in terms of infection rates were HPV-16, -52, -58, -53 and -18. No significant differences (linear-by-linear association test) were found in the HPV infection rates when compared over the studied years (P > 0.05). However, the 15-24-year-old age group showed the highest HPV infection rate, and significant differences (linear-by-linear association test) were detected among the different age groups (P < 0.05). The HPV infection rates exhibited an upward trend in the 15-24-year-old and >24-34-year-old groups over the past five years. There were significant differences in the HPV infection rates among the disease groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: HPV-16, -52 and -58 were the major HPV infection subtypes in Hangzhou, China. The 15-24-year-old age group had a relatively high HPV infection rate with an upward trend over the past five years and thus represented a population susceptible to HPV infection.

RESUMEN

The left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT) and interventricular septum thickness (IVST) are generally regarded as the functional parts of the left ventricular (LV) structure. This paper aims to examine the effects of geographical indices on healthy Han adults' LV structural indices and to offer a scientific basis for developing a unified standard for the reference values of adults' LV structural indices in China. Fifteen terrain, climate, and soil indices were examined as geographical explanatory variables. Statistical analysis was performed using correlation analysis. Moreover, a back propagation neural network (BPNN) and a support vector regression (SVR) were applied to developing models to predict the values of two indices. After the prediction models were built, distribution maps were produced. The results show that LV structural indices are characteristically associated with latitude, longitude, altitude, average temperature, average wind velocity, topsoil sand fraction, topsoil silt fraction, topsoil organic carbon, and topsoil sodicity. The model test analyses show the BPNN model possesses better simulative and predictive ability in comparison with the SVR model. The distribution maps of the LV structural indices show that, in China, the values are higher in the west and lower in the east. These results demonstrate that the reference values of the adults' LV structural indices will be different affected by different geographical environment. The reference values of LV structural indices in one region can be calculated by setting up a BPNN, which showed better applicability in this study. The distribution of the reference values of the LV structural indices can be seen clearly on the geographical distribution map.

RESUMEN

N-Ethyloxycarbonyl-S,S-dibenzothiphene sulfilimine and N-t-butyloxycarbonyl-S,S-dibenzothiphene sulfilimine have been utilized as precursors to ethoxycarbonylnitrene and t-butyloxycarbonylnitrene. B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculations predict triplet ground states for both oxycarbonylnitrenes, albeit by small margins. Triplet ethoxycarbonylnitrene and triplet t-butyloxycarbonylnitrene have been observed following photolysis of these sulfilimine precursors by time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy. Kinetic studies show that ethoxycarbonylnitrene reacts with solvents such as acetonitrile and cyclohexane, while t-butyloxycarbonylnitrene undergoes an intramolecular insertion reaction to produce 5,5-dimethyl oxazolidinone. Product analysis following photolysis of N-t-butyloxycarbonyl-S,S-dibenzothiphene sulfilimine confirms that the oxazolidinone is the major product with an estimated yield of 90%. The products from these two nitrenes are derived from the corresponding singlet nitrene, either directly or via thermal repopulation of the singlet from the lower-energy triplet nitrene.

RESUMEN

Inflammation is a process whereby the immune system responds to a disease or injury. Chronic inflammation, however, has been linked to several types of cancers such as skin cancer. Molecular epidemiological studies were carried out in recent years evaluating interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) rs12203592 and interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene -174G/C polymorphism associated with skin cancer risk for different groups of people. However, the results are still conflicting, not conclusive. We performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between cancer susceptibility and IL-6 -174G/C (1130 cases and 1260 controls from 7 studies) and IRF4 rs12203592 polymorphisms (3879 cases and 6759 controls from 9 studies) in different inheritance models. We assess the strength of association of odds ratio (ORs), 95% confidence interval (CI). Overall, significantly elevated skin cancer risk was found when all studies were pooled into the meta-analysis of IL-6 -174G/C (For GC vs. GG: OR = 1.28, 95% CI, 1.06-1.54, I = 0, Pheterogeneity = 0.816; for CC/GC vs. GG: OR = 1.26, 95% CI, 1.05-1.50, I = 0, Pheterogeneity = 0.618). However, for IRF4 rs12203592 polymorphism, significantly increased risk of skin cancer was observed in TT versus CC (OR = 1.99, 95% CI, 1.30-3.07, I = 76.7%, Pheterogeneity < 0.001) and in recessive model (OR = 1.91, 95% CI, 1.31-2.77, I = 69.9%, Pheterogeneity < 0.001). This meta-analysis indicates that the IL-6 gene -174G/C and IRF4 rs12203592 polymorphisms may be associated with an increased skin cancer risk.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) is a common etiology of ischemic stroke in Chinese patients, probably leading to regional hypoperfusion in the brain. The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate the association between ICAS and poststroke depression in Chinese patients with ischemic stroke. METHODS: During the study period, a total of 569 patients aged between 40 and 80 years with acute ischemic stroke were consecutively admitted and screened. Patients with a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) total score of 15 or higher, with severe cognitive impairment, or with a history of depression before stroke were excluded. Two hundred seven patients with ischemic stroke were consecutively recruited in the study. Depressive symptoms were assessed in the acute stage and 3 months after stroke. Poststroke depression was defined as a score of 8 or higher in the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. The evaluation of the magnetic resonance imaging scans focused on infarctions, white matter lesions, brain atrophy, and ICAS. RESULTS: In the acute stage of stroke, logistic regression revealed that female sex, NIHSS score at admission, prestroke insomnia, and ICAS were significant predictors of poststroke depression. At 3 months after stroke, prestroke insomnia, the Mini-Mental State Examination score and ICAS were significant predictors of poststroke depression. CONCLUSIONS: ICAS may be a significant independent predictor of poststroke depression in Chinese patients with ischemic stroke.
