RESUMEN

Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) possesses excellent intrinsic properties, and many CNF-based high-performance structural and functional materials have been developed recently. However, the coordination of the mechanical properties and functionality is still a considerable challenge. Here, a CNF-based structural material is developed by a bioinspired gradient structure design using hollow magnetite nanoparticles and the phosphorylation-modified CNF as building blocks, which simultaneously achieves a superior mechanical performance and electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) ability. Benefiting from the gradient design, the flexural strength of the structural material reached ∼205 MPa. Meanwhile, gradient design improves impedance matching, contributing to the high EMA ability (-59.5 dB) and wide effective absorption width (5.20 GHz). Besides, a low coefficient of thermal expansion and stable storage modulus was demonstrated as the temperature changes. The excellent mechanical, thermal, and EMA performance exhibited great potential for application in stealth equipment and electromagnetic interference protecting electronic packaging materials.

Constructing structural materials from sustainable raw materials is considered an efficient way to reduce the potential threat posed by plastics. Nevertheless, challenges remain regarding combining excellent mechanical and thermal properties, especially the balance of strength and toughness. Here, we report a 3D nanofiber network interfacial design strategy to strengthen and toughen all-natural structural materials simultaneously. The introduced protonated chitosan at the interface between the surface oxidized 3D nanonetwork of bacterial cellulose forms the interfacial interlocking structure of nanonetworks, achieving a robust physical connection and providing enough physical contact sites for chemical crosslinking. The obtained sustainable structural material successfully integrates excellent mechanical and thermal properties on the nanoscale of cellulose nanofibers, such as light weight, high strength, and superior thermal expansion coefficient. The relationship between structural design and comprehensive mechanical property improvement is analyzed in detail, providing a universal perspective to design sustainable high-performance structural materials from nanoscale building blocks.

We demonstrate fabrication of a 30-cm-long thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) optical delay line (ODL) incorporated with segmented microelectrodes of 24-cm total length using the femtosecond laser lithography technique. The transmission spectra of the unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) reveal an ultra-low propagation loss of 0.025 dB/cm. The device exhibits a low half-wave voltage of 0.45 V, corresponding to a voltage-length product of 10.8 V·cm, which is equivalent to 5.4 V·cm in the push-pull configuration. We also demonstrate a high electro-optic (EO) tuning efficiency of 3.146 fs/V and a continuous tuning range of 220 fs in the fabricated ODL.

We demonstrate on-chip coherent beam combination of two waveguide amplifiers on Er3+-doped thin film lithium niobate (Er:TFLN) platform. Our device is built based on an electro-optic modulator fabricated on Er:TFLN. The output power of the coherently combined amplifiers is measured as high as 12.9 mW, surpassing that of previous single waveguide amplifiers based on an Er3+-doped thin film lithium niobate platform.

The oriented pore structure of wood endows it with a variety of outstanding properties, among which the low thermal conductivity has attracted researchers to develop wood-like aerogels as excellent thermal insulation materials. However, the increasing demands of environmental protection have put forward new and strict requirements for the sustainability of aerogels. Here, we report an all-natural wood-inspired aerogel consisting of all-natural ingredients and develop a method to activate the surface-inert wood particles to construct the aerogel. The obtained wood-inspired aerogel has channel structure similar to that of natural wood, endowing it with superior thermal insulation properties to most existing commercial sponges. In addition, remarkable fire retardancy and complete biodegradability are integrated. With the above outstanding performances, this sustainable wood-inspired aerogel will be an ideal substitute for the existing commercial thermal insulation materials.

We introduce the optical vortex beam into simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF) technique, and theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the local control of peak intensity distribution at the focus of a simultaneous spatiotemporally focused optical vortex (SSTF OV) beam. To avoid nonlinear self-focusing in the conventional focusing scheme, a spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser vortex beam was employed to achieve doughnut-shaped ablation and high aspect ratio (∼28) microchannels on the back surface of 3 mm thick soda-lime glass and fused silica substrates.

We propose a hybrid laser microfabrication approach for the manufacture of three-dimensional (3D) optofluidic spot-size converters in fused silica glass by a combination of femtosecond (fs) laser microfabrication and carbon dioxide laser irradiation. Spatially shaped fs laser-assisted chemical etching was first performed to form 3D hollow microchannels in glass, which were composed of embedded straight channels, tapered channels, and vertical channels connected to the glass surface. Then, carbon dioxide laser-induced thermal reflow was carried out for the internal polishing of the whole microchannels and sealing parts of the vertical channels. Finally, 3D optofluidic spot-size converters (SSC) were formed by filling a liquid-core waveguide solution into laser-polished microchannels. With a fabricated SSC structure, the mode spot size of the optofluidic waveguide was expanded from ~8 µm to ~23 µm with a conversion efficiency of ~84.1%. Further measurement of the waveguide-to-waveguide coupling devices in the glass showed that the total insertion loss of two symmetric SSC structures through two ~50 µm-diameter coupling ports was ~6.73 dB at 1310 nm, which was only about half that of non-SSC structures with diameters of ~9 µm at the same coupling distance. The proposed approach holds great potential for developing novel 3D fluid-based photonic devices for mode conversion, optical manipulation, and lab-on-a-chip sensing.

We demonstrate a C-band wavelength-tunable microlaser with an Er3+-doped high quality (∼1.8×106) lithium niobate microdisk resonator. With a 976 nm continuous-wave pump laser, lasing action can be observed at a pump power threshold lower than 400 µW at room temperature. Furthermore, the microdisk laser wavelength can be tuned by varying the pump laser power, showing a tuning efficiency of ∼-17.03pm/mW at low pump power below 13 mW, and 10.58 pm/mW at high pump power above 13 mW.

We demonstrate an on-chip Yb3+-doped lithium niobate (LN) microdisk laser. The intrinsic quality factors of the fabricated Yb3+-doped LN microdisk resonator are measured up to 3.79×105 at a 976 nm wavelength and 1.1×106 at a 1514 nm wavelength. The multi-mode laser emissions are obtained in a band from 1020 to 1070 nm pumped by a 984 nm laser and with the low threshold of 103µW, resulting in a slope efficiency of 0.53% at room temperature. Furthermore, both the second-harmonic frequency of pump light and the sum frequency of the pump light and laser emissions are generated in the on-chip Yb3+-doped LN microdisk, benefiting from the strong χ(2) nonlinearity of LN. These microdisk lasers are expected to contribute to the high-density integration of a lithium niobate on insulator-based photonic chip.

We demonstrate monolithic integration of an electro-optically (EO) tunable microring laser on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) platform. The device is fabricated by photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching, and the pump laser is evanescently coupled into the erbium (${\rm{E}}{{\rm{r}}^{3 +}}$)-doped lithium niobate (LN) microring laser using an undoped LN waveguide mounted above the microring. The quality factor of the LN microring resonator is measured as high as ${1.54} \times {{1}}{{{0}}^5}$ at the wavelength of 1542 nm. Lasing action can be observed at a pump power threshold below 3.5 mW using a 980 nm continuous-wave pump laser. Finally, tuning of the laser wavelength is achieved by varying the electric voltage on the microelectrodes fabricated in the vicinity of a microring waveguide, showing an EO coefficient of 0.33 pm/V.

OBJECTIVE: Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) can be caused by congenital HH (CHH), pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS), and pituitary injury (acquired HH). Gonadotropin therapy, typically administered every other day or twice a week, is commonly used to promote spermatogenesis. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of weekly gonadotropin therapy on spermatogenesis in patients with HH (n = 160). METHODS: The patients' diagnoses include Kallmann syndrome (KS) (n = 61), normosmic CHH (nCHH) (n = 34), PSIS (n = 48), and acquired HH (n = 17). The rate of successful spermatogenesis and median time to achieve spermatogenesis among these 4 subgroups were compared as well as between a weekly group (n = 95) and a twice-a-week group (n = 223) of CHH patients. RESULTS: Once-a-week gonadotropin therapy resulted in 74% (119/160) of HH patients achieving spermatogenesis with significantly increased testicular volume and total testosterone levels (P < .001). The median period of spermatogenesis was 13 (interquartile range[IQR] 11.4-14.6) months. Larger basal testicular volume (P = .0142) was an independent predictor for earlier sperm appearance. Six spontaneous pregnancies occurred. Compared with the twice-a-week regimen for spermatogenesis, the weekly injection group had a similar median time of sperm appearance (14 [IQR, 11.6-16.4] vs 15 [IQR, 13.5-16.5] months), success rate (78% [74/95] vs 64% [143/223]), sperm concentration (20.9 [IQR, 5.0-46.3] vs 11.7 [IQR, 2.1-24.4] million/mL), and progressive sperm motility (40.8 ± 27.3% vs 36.9% ± 20.2%). CONCLUSION: Weekly gonadotropin therapy is effective in inducing spermatogenesis, similar to that of twice-a-week therapy. A larger basal testicular size was a favorable indicator for earlier spermatogenesis.

In recent years, carbon tetrachloride (CT) has been frequently detected in surface water and groundwater around the world; it is necessary to find an effective way to treat wastewater contaminated with it. In this study, Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were immobilized on reduced graphene oxide (NF@rGO), and used to dechlorinate CT in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the two-dimensional structure of rGO could disperse nanoparticles commendably. The results of batch experiments showed that the 4N4F@rGO (Fe/GO = 4 wt./wt., and Ni/Fe = 4 wt.%) could reach a higher reduction capacity (143.2 mgCT/gcatalyst) compared with Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles (91.7 mgCT/gcatalyst) and Fe0 nanoparticles (49.8 mgCT/gcatalyst) respectively. That benefited from the nickel metal as a co-catalyst, which could reduce the reaction activation energy of 6.59 kJ/mol, and rGO as an electrical conductivity supporting material could further reduce the reaction activation energy of 4.73 kJ/mol as presented in the conceptual model. More complete dechlorination products were generated with the use of 4N4F@rGO. Based on the above results, the reductive pathway of CT and the catalytic reaction mechanism have been discussed.

Perforin plays an important role in autoimmune and infectious diseases, but its function in immune inflammatory responses after spinal cord injury (SCI) has received insufficient attention. The goal of this study is to determine the influence of perforin after spinal cord injury (SCI) on secondary inflammation. Compared recovery from SCI in perforin knockout (Prf1-/-) and wild-type(WT)mice, WT mice had significantly lower the Basso mouse score (BMS), CatWalk XT, and motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) than Prf1-/- mice. Spinal cord lesions were also more obvious through glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), Nissl, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining. Furthermore, the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) disruption was more severe and inflammatory cytokine levels were higher. Flow cytometry indicated that perforin mainly originated from CD8 T cells. With flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) yielded similar results. Together, this study firstly demonstrated that CD8 T cell-derived perforin is detrimental to SCI recovery in the mouse model. Mechanistically, this effect occurs because perforin increases BSCB permeability, causing inflammatory cells and related cytokines to infiltrate and disrupt the nervous system.

RESUMEN

We report on a pump-probe investigation of vibrational Raman scattering from coherently excited N2+ ions. It is found that the Raman signals produced by the inelastic scattering of the probe pulse from molecular ions can be dramatically enhanced when the probe laser is resonant with electronic transitions in N2+ ions. The Raman signal can be amplified at 428 nm wavelength due to the presence of population inversion in N2+ ions.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A member 1 (NR5A1) gene mutations in a cohort of Chinese patients with 46, XY Disorders of Sex Development (DSD). METHODS: Sixty 46, XY DSD patients were recruited at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Targeted next-generation and Sanger sequencing were performed to investigate pathogenic gene variants and validate NR5A1 gene variants, respectively. In silico tools and in vitro function studies were used to analyze the pathogenicity of rare variants. The clinical and endocrinological characteristics of patients with NR5A1 variants were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: A total of four novel and three recurrent NR5A1 variants were identified in seven 46, XY DSD patients. These variants widely spread almost all the functional domains. Functional studies showed that novel mutations including p.S32N, p.N44del and p.G91D reduced transactivation of CYP11A1, while the other missense variant p.A168E did not impact protein function. All patients with NR5A1 rare variants had normal adrenal function and showed genital defects. Results of the genitalia examination showed female external genitalia (three patients), ambiguous external genitalia (two patients), female external genitalia with clitoromegaly (one patient), and hypospadias (one patient). All seven patients had bilateral testis and five of seven patients lacked Müllerian structures. CONCLUSIONS: Four novel mutations in the NR5A1 gene were identified in our cohort with 46, XY DSD, expanding the spectrum of NR5A1 gene mutations. All patients with NR5A1 rare variants had normal adrenal function and showed genital defects.

We investigate free-space lasing actions from molecular nitrogen ions (N2+) at the wavelengths of ~391 nm and ~428 nm. Our results show that pronounced gain can be measured at either 391 nm or 428 nm laser wavelength with a pump laser centered at 800 nm wavelength, whereas the gain at 391 nm laser wavelength completely disappears when the wavelength of the pump laser is tuned to 1500 nm. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the different gain behaviors can be attributed to the vibrational distribution of populations in X2Σg+(v=0) and X2Σg+(v=1) states as the N2+ ions are generated by photoionization in the laser fields, giving rise to more robust (i.e., less sensitive to the pump laser wavelength) population inversion for generating the 428 nm laser.

The generation of laserlike narrow bandwidth emissions from nitrogen molecular ions (N_{2}^{+}) generated in intense near- and mid infrared femtosecond laser fields has aroused much interest because of the mysterious physics underlying such a phenomenon. Here, we perform a pump-probe measurement on the nonlinear interaction of rotational quantum wave packets of N_{2}^{+} generated in midinfrared (e.g., at a wavelength centered at 1580 nm) femtosecond laser fields with an ultrashort probe pulse whose broad spectrum overlaps both P- and R-branch rotational transition lines between the electronic states N_{2}^{+}(B^{2}Σ_{u}^{+},v^{'}=0) and N_{2}^{+}(X^{2}Σ_{g}^{+},v=0). The results indicate the occurrence of highly efficient near-resonant stimulated Raman scattering in the quantum wave packets of N_{2}^{+} ions generated in strong laser fields in the midinfrared region, of which the underlying mechanism is different from that of the air lasers generated in atmospheric environment when pumping with 800 nm intense pulses.

STUDY QUESTION: Do patients with congenital combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CCPHD) have different responses to gonadotrophin-induced spermatogenesis compared with those with idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH)? SUMMARY ANSWER: CCPHD patients have a better response to gonadotrophin therapy than IHH patients. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Gonadotrophins are effective in inducing spermatogenesis in patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. DESIGN, SIZE AND DURATION: This retrospective cohort study included 75 patients, 53 of whom had IHH and 22 CCPHD. They were diagnosed, treated and followed up between January 2008 and December 2013. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING AND METHODS: Combined gonadotrophin therapy, consisting of human chorionic gonadotrophin and human menopausal gonadotrophin, was administered for 24 months. The success rate of spermatogenesis (≥1 sperm in ejaculate), serum total testosterone level, testicle size and sperm concentration during the treatment, as well as the first time sperm were detected in the ejaculate, were compared between the two diagnostic groups. All patients were treated in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Spermatogenesis was successfully induced in 85% of IHH patients and 100% of CCPHD patients after 24-month combined gonadotrophin treatment (P = 0.03). In comparison with IHH, CCPHD patients had larger mean testicle sizes during the gonadotrophin treatment at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months (all P < 0.05). The initial time for sperm appearance in IHH group (n = 45) and CCPHD group (n = 22) was 13.2 ± 5.9 versus 10.4 ± 3.8 months (P = 0.045). Generally, CCPHD patients had higher sperm counts [median (quartiles)] than IHH patients during the treatment, but the difference was only statistically significant at 12 months of treatment, 3.3 (1.8, 12.0) versus 1.0 (0.0, 4.6) million/ml, P = 0.001. There was a higher level of serum total testosterone [mean (SD)] in the CCPHD group than the IHH group (676 ± 245 versus 555 ± 209 ng/dl, P = 0.035). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: First, the inherent nature of a retrospective designed study was a main shortcoming. Secondly, pathological gene mutations in IHH and CCPHD patients should be further investigated. Clarification of the underlying mechanisms between cryptorchidism and mutated genes may provide more information for the divergent therapeutic responses between two groups. Only a minority of patients were actively seeking to have children so information about fertility is limited. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: CCPHD patients had a lower incidence of cryptorchidism and a better response to gonadotrophin therapy than IHH patients, reflecting multiple defects on the different levels of reproduction axis in IHH. Furthermore, growth hormone is not indispensable for spermatogenesis in CCPHD patients. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacies of pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) versus human chorionic gonadotropin/human menopausal gonadotropin (HCG/HMG) for spermatogenesis in male idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH). METHODS: For this retrospective study, a total of 92 male IHH outpatients from May 2010 to October 2014 were recruited and categorized into GnRH (n = 40) and HCG/HMG (n = 52) groups. Each subject selected one specific therapy voluntarily. The gonadotropin levels were measured in the first week and monthly post-treatment in GnRH group. And serum total testosterone (TT), testicular volume (TV) and rate of spermatogenesis were observed monthly post-treatment in two groups. Spermatogenesis, TT and TV were compared between two groups. RESULTS: All IHH patients were treated for over 3 months. The median follow-up periods in GnRH and HCG/HMG groups was 8.2 (3.0-18.4) and 9.2 (3.0-18.6) months respectively (P = 0.413). In GnRH group, LH ((0.5 ± 0.6) vs (3.4 ± 2.4) U/L, P < 0.01) and FSH ((1.3 ± 1.1) vs (5.8 ± 3.8) U/L, P < 0.01) increased after 1-week treatment. In GnRH group, at the end of follow-up, TT ((1.0 ± 1.0) vs (7.4 ± 5.2) nmol/L, P < 0.01) and TV ((2.3 ± 1.5) vs (8.1 ± 4.0) ml, P < 0.01) significantly increased compared to baseline. In HCG/HMG group, TT ((0.8 ± 0.6) vs (14.4 ± 8.0) nmol/L, P < 0.01) and TV ((2.3 ± 2.1) vs (7.6 ± 4.2) ml, P < 0.01) significantly increased after therapy. The success rate of spermatogenesis was 50.0% (20/40) in GnRH group versus 28.8% (15/52) in HCG/HMG group (P = 0.038). GnRH group required a shorter treatment time for initial sperm appearance than HCG/HMG group ((6.5 ± 3.1) vs (10.8 ± 3.7) months, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Pulsatile GnRH requires a shorter time for initiation of spermatogenesis than gonadotropin therapy in IHH male patients.
