RESUMEN

Pressure ulcer (PU) is a worldwide problem that is difficult to address because of the related inflammatory response, local hypoxia, and repeated ischaemia/reperfusion, causing great suffering and financial burden to patients. Traditional Chinese medicine turtle plate powder can treat skin trauma, but its composition is complex and inconvenient to use. Here, we combined cholesterol myristate (S8) with berberine (BBR), with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, as a drug and used hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 as carriers to construct a novel film-forming polymeric solution (S8 + BBR FFPS), comprehensively study its reparative effect on PU and explore the potential mechanism in rat PU models. The results showed that S8 + BBR FFPS inhibits excessive inflammatory response, promotes re-epithelialization, and promotes hair follicle growth during the healing process of PU, which may be related to the activation of the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway by S8 + BBR FFPS to mediate hair follicle stem cell proliferation and maintain skin homeostasis. Therefore, S8 + BBR FFPS may be a potential candidate for the treatment of chronic skin injury, and its association with the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway may provide new ideas to guide the design of biomaterial-based wound dressings for chronic wound repair.

The implementation of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) raises concerns regarding their potential toxic effects on human health. Although more and more researches have confirmed the toxic effects of ZnO NPs, limited attention has been given to their impact on the early embryonic nervous system. This study aimed to explore the impact of exposure to ZnO NPs on early neurogenesis and explore its underlying mechanisms. We conducted experiments here to confirm the hypothesis that exposure to ZnO NPs causes neural tube defects in early embryonic development. We first used mouse and chicken embryos to confirm that ZnO NPs and the Zn2+ they release are able to penetrate the placental barrier, influence fetal growth and result in incomplete neural tube closure. Using SH-SY5Y cells, we determined that ZnO NPs-induced incomplete neural tube closure was caused by activation of various cell death modes, including ferroptosis, apoptosis and autophagy. Moreover, dissolved Zn2+ played a role in triggering widespread cell death. ZnO NPs were accumulated within mitochondria after entering cells, damaging mitochondrial function and resulting in the over production of reactive oxygen species, ultimately inducing cellular oxidative stress. The N-acetylcysteine (NAC) exhibits significant efficacy in mitigating cellular oxidative stress, thereby alleviating the cytotoxicity and neurotoxicity brought about by ZnO NPs. These findings indicated that the exposure of ZnO NPs in early embryonic development can induce cell death through oxidative stress, resulting in a reduced number of cells involved in early neural tube closure and ultimately resulting in incomplete neural tube closure during embryo development. The findings of this study could raise public awareness regarding the potential risks associated with the exposure and use of ZnO NPs in early pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) was associated with potentially life-threatening complications. Among patients supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), those who underwent HSCT had a worse prognosis than those who did not. Advances in HSCT and critical care management have improved the prognosis of ECMO-supported HSCT patients. CASE: The patient in the remission stage of lymphoma after 22 months of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, suffered from ARDS, severe neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and long-term COVID-19. We evaluated the benefits and risks of ECMO for the patient, including the possibility of being free from ECMO, the status of malignancy, the interval from HSCT to ARDS, the function of the graft, the amount of organ failure, and the comorbidities. ECMO was ultimately used to save his life. CONCLUSIONS: We did not advocate for the general use of ECMO in HSCT patients and we believed that highly selected patients, with well-controlled tumors, few comorbidities, and fewer risk factors for death, tended to benefit from ECMO with well ICU management.

This study aimed to determine the impact of current hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection on patients hospitalised with sepsis. This was a retrospective cohort study. Patients from three medical centres in Suzhou from 10 January 2016 to 23 July 2022 participated in this study. Demographic characteristics and clinical characteristics were collected. A total of 945 adult patients with sepsis were included. The median age was 66.0 years, 68.6% were male, 13.1% presented with current HBV infection, and 34.9% of all patients died. In the multivariable-adjusted Cox model, patients with current HBV infection had significantly higher mortality than those without (hazard ratio (HR) 1.50, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.11-2.02). A subgroup analysis showed that being infected with HBV significantly increased in-hospital mortality in patients younger than 65 years old (HR 1.74, 95% CI 1.16-2.63), whereas no significant impact was observed in patients ≥65 years. The propensity score-matched case-control analysis showed that the rate of septic shock (91.4% vs. 62.1%, P < 0.001) and in-hospital mortality (48.3% vs. 35.3%, P = 0.045) were much higher in the propensity score-matched HBV infection group compared with the control group. In conclusion, current HBV infection was associated with mortality in adults with sepsis.

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that daily supplementation with low-dose B vitamins plus betaine could significantly reduce plasma homocysteine concentrations in Chinese adults with hyperhomocysteinemia and free from background mandatory folic acid fortification. METHODS: One hundred apparently healthy adults aged 18-65 years with hyperhomocysteinemia were recruited in South China from July 2019 to June 2021. They were randomly assigned to either the supplement group (daily supplementation: 400 µg folic acid, 8 mg vitamin B6, 6.4 µg vitamin B12 and 1 g betaine) or the placebo group for 12 weeks. Fasting venous blood was collected at baseline, week 4 and week 12 to determine the concentrations of homocysteine, folate, vitamin B12 and betaine. Generalized estimation equations were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Statistically significant increments in blood concentrations of folate, vitamin B12 and betaine after the intervention in the supplement group indicated good participant compliance. At baseline, there were no significant differences in plasma homocysteine concentration between the two groups (P = 0.265). After 12-week supplementation, compared with the placebo group, there was a significant reduction in plasma homocysteine concentrations in the supplement group (mean group difference - 3.87; covariate-adjusted P = 0.012; reduction rate 10.1%; covariate-adjusted P < 0.001). In the supplement group, the decreased concentration of plasma homocysteine was associated with increments of blood concentrations of both folate (ß = -1.680, P = 0.004) and betaine (ß = -1.421, P = 0.020) after 12 weeks of supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: Daily supplementation with low-dose B vitamins plus betaine for 12 weeks effectively decreased plasma homocysteine concentrations in Chinese adults with hyperhomocysteinemia. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is a fatal occupational disease caused by inhalation of coal dust particles, which leads to progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Recently, as new signal carriers for intercellular communication, exosomal miRNAs have been validated in the pathogenesis of multiple diseases. However, the research on exosomal miRNAs in CWP is still in the preliminary stage. Here, using miRNA sequencing, exosomal miRNA profiles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from rats with pulmonary fibrosis induced by coal dust particles were analyzed, and the underlying biological function of putative target genes was explored by GO term analysis and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis. According to the results, intratracheal instillation of coal dust particles can alter the exosomal miRNAs expression in the BALF of rats. Further bioinformatics analysis provided some clues to reveal their function in pathological process of pneumoconiosis. More importantly, we identified 4 differentially expressed exosomal miRNAs (miRNA-21-5p, miRNA-29a-3p, miRNA-26a-5p, and miRNA-34a-5p) by qRT­PCR and further verified the temporal changes in the expression of these exosomal miRNAs in animal models from 2 weeks to 16 weeks postexposure. In addition, we conducted a preliminary study on Smad7 as a potential target of miRNA-21-5p and found that exosomal miRNA 21-5p/Smad7 may contribute to the pulmonary fibrosis induced by coal dust particles. Our study confirmed the contribution of exosomal miRNAs to coal dust particle-induced pulmonary fibrosis and provided new insights into the pathogenesis of CWP.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widespread environmental pollutant linked to detrimental effects on human health and reduced life expectancy following chronic exposure. This prospective cohort study aimed to examine the association between BPA exposure and mortality in American adults and to explore the potential mitigating effects of dietary quality on BPA-related mortality. This study utilized data from 8761 American adults in the 2003-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Urinary BPA levels were employed to assess BPA exposure, and dietary quality was evaluated using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015). All-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality statuses were determined until December 31, 2019, resulting in a cumulative follow-up of 80,564 person-years. The results showed that the highest tertile of urinary BPA levels corresponded to a 36% increase in all-cause mortality and a 62% increase in CVD mortality compared to the lowest tertile. In contrast, the highest tertile of HEI-2015 scores was associated with a 29% reduction in all-cause mortality relative to the lowest tertile. Although no significant interaction was found between HEI-2015 scores and urinary BPA levels concerning mortality, the association between HEI-2015 scores and both all-cause and CVD mortality was statistically significant at low urinary BPA levels. Continuous monitoring of BPA exposure is crucial for evaluating its long-term adverse health effects. Improving dietary quality can lower all-cause mortality and decrease the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality at low BPA exposure levels. However, due to the limited protective effect of dietary quality against BPA exposure, minimizing BPA exposure remains a vital goal.

The aim of this study was to summarise the best evidence for the prevention and control of pressure ulcer at the support surface based on the site and stage of the pressure ulcer in order to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcer and improve the quality of care. In accordance with the top-down principle of the 6 S model of evidence-based resources, evidence from domestic and international databases and websites on the prevention and control of pressure ulcer on support surfaces, including randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, evidence-based guidelines, and evidence summaries, was systematically searched for the period from January 2000 to July 2022. Evidence grading based on the Joanna Briggs Institute Evidence-Based Health Care Centre Evidence Pre-grading System (2014 version), Australia. The outcomes mainly embraced 12 papers, including three randomised controlled trials, three systematic reviews, three evidence-based guidelines, and three evidence summaries. The best evidence summarised included a total of 19 recommendations in three areas: type of support surface selection assessment, use of support surfaces, and team management and quality control.

BACKGROUND: The role of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in the development of diabetes remains controversial, and prospective data are few. We aimed to investigate the association between serum TMAO and incident type 2 diabetes in middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: This study was based on the Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study (GNHS), a community-based prospective cohort study in China. A total of 2088 diabetes-free participants aged 40-75 years were included from 2008 to 2010. Incident type 2 diabetes was ascertained during follow-up visits. Baseline serum TMAO was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with online electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for diabetes across tertiles of serum TMAO were calculated using Cox proportional hazard models. Prospective associations of serum TMAO with changes in glycemic traits (fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin, HOMA-IR) over time were estimated using linear mixed-effects models (LMEMs). RESULTS: We ascertained 254 incident type 2 diabetes cases during a median follow-up of 8.9 years. The median (interquartile range) of serum TMAO was 1.54 (0.86-2.91) µmol/L. From the first to the third tertile of serum TMAO, the multivariable-adjusted HRs for diabetes were 1.00 (reference), 1.17 (95% CI: 0.84-1.61), and 1.42 (95% CI: 1.03-1.96) (P-trend = 0.031). LMEMs showed that the estimated yearly change in fasting glucose was 0.011 (0.001-0.022) mmol/L/y in the highest tertile of serum TMAO, compared with the lowest tertile (P-interaction = 0.044). Serum TMAO was not associated with longitudinal changes in HbA1c, insulin or HOMA-IR. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that higher serum TMAO was associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and an increase in fasting glucose among middle-aged and older Chinese adults. AIMS: To explore the association of obesity with the progression and outcome of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the acute period and 5-month follow-up from the perspectives of computed tomography (CT) imaging with artificial intelligence (AI)-based quantitative evaluation, which may help to predict the risk of obese COVID-19 patients progressing to severe and critical disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort enrolled 213 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Patients were classified into three groups according to their body mass index (BMI): normal weight (from 18.5 to <24 kg/m2 ), overweight (from 24 to <28 kg/m2 ) and obesity (≥28 kg/m2 ). RESULTS: Compared with normal-weight patients, patients with higher BMI were associated with more lung involvements in lung CT examination (lung lesions volume [cm3 ], normal weight vs. overweight vs. obesity; 175.5[34.0-414.9] vs. 261.7[73.3-576.2] vs. 395.8[101.6-1135.6]; p = 0.002), and were more inclined to deterioration at the acute period. At the 5-month follow-up, the lung residual lesion was more serious (residual total lung lesions volume [cm3 ], normal weight vs. overweight vs. obesity; 4.8[0.0-27.4] vs. 10.7[0.0-55.5] vs. 30.1[9.5-91.1]; p = 0.015), and the absorption rates were lower for higher BMI patients (absorption rates of total lung lesions volume [%], normal weight vs. overweight vs. obesity; 99.6[94.0-100.0] vs. 98.9[85.2-100.0] vs. 88.5[66.5-95.2]; p = 0.013). The clinical-plus-AI parameter model was superior to the clinical-only parameter model in the prediction of disease deterioration (areas under the ROC curve, 0.884 vs. 0.794, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Obesity was associated with severe pneumonia lesions on CT and adverse clinical outcomes. The AI-based model with combinational use of clinical and CT parameters had incremental prognostic value over the clinical parameters alone.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Epidemiological evidence linking fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis lacked. We aimed to evaluate the associations between serum FGF21 levels and HCC survival in a large prospective cohort. METHODS: 825 newly diagnosed, previously untreated HCC patients from the Guangdong Liver Cancer Cohort were enrolled between September 2013 and April 2017. Serum FGF21 levels were measured by ELISA. Liver cancer-specific survival (LCSS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were performed to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Compared with patients in the lowest tertile of serum FGF21 levels, patients in the highest tertile had inferior survival outcomes. HRs in the fully adjusted models were 1.44 (95% CI: 1.07, 1.94; P-trend  = .014) and 1.48 (95% CI: 1.12, 1.97; P-trend  = .002) for LCSS and OS, respectively. The associations were not significantly modified by selected metabolic disorder diseases or state such as arterial hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, fatty liver, cirrhosis, and body mass index ≥25.0 kg/m2 , except for that stronger associations were observed in patients co-occurred more than three metabolic disorder diseases (P-interaction  = .046 for OS and .151 for LCSS), with an HR of 2.01 (95% CI: 1.04, 3.85; P-trend  = .009) for OS and 1.51 (95% CI: 0.73, 3.10; P-trend  = .195) for LCSS. CONCLUSIONS: Higher serum FGF21 levels were associated with worse survival in HCC patients, suggesting that serum FGF21 may be used as a novel metabolism-related prognostic biomarker for HCC.

The association between dietary Fe intake and diabetes risk remains inconsistent. We aimed to explore the association between dietary Fe intake and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk in middle-aged and older adults in urban China. This study used data from the Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study, an on-going community-based prospective cohort study. Participants were recruited from 2008 to 2013 in Guangzhou community. A total of 2696 participants aged 40-75 years without T2DM at baseline were included in data analyses, with a median of 5·6 (interquartile range 4·1-5·9) years of follow-up. T2DM was identified by self-reported diagnosis, fasting glucose ≥ 7·0 mmol/l or glycosylated Hb ≥ 6·5 %. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % CI. We ascertained 205 incident T2DM cases during 13 476 person-years. The adjusted HR for T2DM risk in the fourth quartile of haem Fe intake was 1·92 (95 % CI 1·07, 3·46; Ptrend = 0·010), compared with the first quartile intake. These significant associations were found in haem Fe intake from total meat (HR 2·74; 95 % CI 1·22, 6·15; Ptrend = 0·011) and haem Fe intake from red meat (HR 1·86; 95 % CI 1·01, 3·44; Ptrend = 0·034), but not haem Fe intake from processed meat, poultry or fish/shellfish. The association between dietary intake of total Fe or non-haem Fe with T2DM risk had no significance. Our findings suggested that higher dietary intake of haem Fe (especially from red meat), but not total Fe or non-haem Fe, was associated with greater T2DM risk in middle-aged and older adults.

A higher dietary intake or serum concentration of betaine has been associated with greater lean body mass in middle-aged and older adults. However, it remains unknown whether betaine intake is associated with age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM). We assessed the association between dietary betaine intake and relative changes in SMM after 3 years in middle-aged adults. A total of 1242 participants aged 41-60 years from the Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study 2011-2013 and 2014-2017 with body composition measurements by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were included. A face-to-face questionnaire was used to collect general baseline information. After adjustment for potential confounders, multiple linear regression found that energy-adjusted dietary betaine intake was significantly and positively associated with relative changes (i.e. percentage loss or increase) in SMM of legs, limbs and appendicular skeletal mass index (ASMI) over 3 years of follow-up (ß 0·322 (se 0·157), 0·309 (se 0·142) and 0·303 (se 0·145), respectively; P < 0·05). The ANCOVA models revealed that participants in the highest betaine tertile had significantly less loss in SMM of limbs and ASMI and more increase in SMM of legs over 3 years of follow-up, compared with those in the bottom betaine tertile (all Ptrend < 0·05). In conclusion, our findings suggest that elevated higher dietary betaine intake may be associated with less loss of SMM of legs, limbs and ASMI in middle-aged adults.

AIM: Adherence to dietary recommendations has been linked to a reduced risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and dying of chronic liver disease. However, its role in the prognosis of HCC is still unclear. We prospectively investigated the association of two dietary quality indices, the Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) and the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015), with all-cause and HCC-specific mortality in a large prospective cohort of HCC survivors. METHODS: We included 887 patients with newly diagnosed, previously untreated HCC enrolled in the Guangdong Liver Cancer Cohort (GLCC) between September 2013 and April 2017 in the analysis. CHEI and HEI-2015 scores were calculated based on the dietary intake in the year before diagnosis of HCC. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each index. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 797 days, 389 deaths were identified, including 347 from HCC. Higher CHEI scores, reflecting favorable adherence to the 2016 Dietary Guidelines for Chinese, were associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality (T3 vs. T1 : HR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.58-0.98) and HCC-specific mortality (T3 vs. T1 : HR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.56-0.98). Non-significant, inverse associations of HEI-2015 score with all-cause mortality (T3 vs. T1 : HR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.67-1.11) and HCC-specific mortality (T3 vs. T1 : HR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.71-1.21) were suggested. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that better adherence to the 2016 Dietary Guidelines for Chinese may reduce the risk of all-cause and HCC-specific mortality in patients with HCC.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase Ⅱ(CaMK-Ⅱ) and protein phosphatase-2 A(PP2 A) on hyperphosphorylation of tau induced by AlCl_3 in SH-SY5 Y cell. METHODS: SH-SY5 Y cells were assigned to the control group, AlCl_3 low, middle, high exposed groups(200, 400800 µmol/L Al~(3+)), KN93 intervention group(800 µmol/L Al~(3+)+0. 5 µmol/L KN93) and sphingosine intervention group(800 µmol/L Al~(3+)+5 nmol/L sphingosine). After 48 h of exposure and intervention, the viabilities of cells were measured by CCK-8 assay, the contents of CaMK-Ⅱ and PP2 A were determined by ELISA, and the expression of tau5 and phosphorylation of Thr-181, Thr-231, Ser-262 and Ser-396 were detected by Western-Blot. RESULTS: The viabilities of cells in AlCl_3 middle and high exposed groups were significantly lower than that of the control group(P<0. 05). Compared with the AlCl_3 high exposed group, the viabilities of cells in KN93 intervention group and sphingosine intervention group were significantly increased(P<0. 05), as well as the difference of the cell viability between sphingosine intervention group and the control group was not statistically significant. Compared with the control group, the contents of CaMK-Ⅱin AlCl_3 low, middle, high exposed groups were significantly increased(P<0. 05), while the contents of PP2 A in those groups were significantly decreased(P<0. 05). Compared with AlCl_3 high exposed group, the contents of CaMK-Ⅱ in KN93 intervention group and sphingosine intervention group were significantly decreased(P<0. 05), and PP2 A in those groups were significantly increased(P<0. 05). The expression of tau5 and phosphorylation of Thr-181, Thr-231, Ser-396 in AlCl_3 low, middle, high exposed group showed significantly higher than those of the control group(P<0. 05), while the phosphorylation of Ser-262 in AlCl_3 high exposed group showed significantly higher than that of the control group(P<0. 05). After intervention with KN93 and sphingosine, the expression of tau5, and phosphorylation of Thr-181, Thr-231, Ser-262, Ser-396 in KN93 intervention group and sphingosine intervention group were significantly lower than those of AlCl_3 high exposed group( P<0. 05), as well as compared with the control group, the phosphorylation of Ser-262 in KN93 intervention group and Thr-181, Thr-231 and Ser-396 in sphingosine intervention group were not statistical difference. CONCLUSION: AlCl_3 could increase the phosphorylation of Thr-181, Thr-231, Ser-262 and Ser396 in SH-SY5 Y cells, which mechanism may relate to the changes of CaMK-Ⅱand PP2 A. CaMK-Ⅱ mainly regulates the phosphorylation of Ser-262 induced by AlCl_3, while PP2 A mainly regulates the phosphorylation of Thr-181, Thr-231 and Ser-396 induced by AlCl_3. It is suggested that hyperphosphorylated tau protein induced by AlCl_3 is closely related to PP2 A.

Gold nanostructures such as nanospheres, nanorods, or nanowires have been extensively used for electrode surface modification because they not only can increase the overall electroactive surface but can also provide anchoring sites for thiolated aptamers through facile Au-S covalent bonds. However, all of those gold nanostructures used are solid and only the outer surface is attractive. In the aim to reduce the usage of precious gold, in this paper, porous gold nanocages (AuNCs) with both inner and outer walls for effective aptamer immobilization have been electrostatically adhered on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE), to develop a highly sensitive aptasensor in a truly label-free manner. Specifically, the thiolated aptamers specific for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) were chosen as the model aptamer and covalently bound to the inner and outer surface of AuNCs using Au-S chemistry. Exposing the sensing interface to targets could initiate the formation of the aptamer/target complex, resulting in an increased interfacial electron transfer resistance on the SPCE. Under optimal conditions, this aptasensor could detect AFB1 in a wide range of 0.1 pg mL-1 to 100 ng mL-1 with a high linear fit and has an ultralow detection limit of 0.03 pg mL-1 (S/N = 3). The developed aptasensor has remarkable merits such as simpler operation, more cost-effective, more sensitive, and less reagent consumption. We therefore provided a universal strategy to well balance the simplicity, sensitivity, and cost of disposable aptasensors for a large population of targets having specific aptamer strands.

Multi-line Structured Light Projection System (MSLPS) is widely used with the advantages of high-contrast stripes and high robustness in high-speed dynamic reconstruction in comparison with Phase Modulation System (PMS). However, existing calibration methods are either sophisticated or low-accuracy in large visual field application because the bending of line structured light plane caused by lens distortion is inevitable and projector calibration is necessary. Therefore, in this paper, we present an accurate and robust calibration method based on ray-tracing, which establishes accurate relationship between subpixel coordinates of each bending line structured light plane and 3D coordinates based on camera coordinate system without projector calibration. As long as placing a checkerboard at random positions, MSLPS can be calibrated and hence is more suitable in practical application. Experimental results demonstrated that, compared with existing line structured light strategies, the proposed method could achieve more accurate and robust 3D reconstruction and the calibration process is simpler and easier to implement.

In recent years, a ratiometric electrochemical method has been investigated due to its ability to effectively reduce the background electrical signals via the introduction of an internal calibration mechanism, which has great practical significance in the detection of mycotoxins in foods. Herein, we report a ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor based on two semiconductor quantum dots (i.e. CdTe and PbS QDs) for the detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The aptasensor was fabricated by immobilizing PbS QD-coated silica hybrid spheres (SiO2@PbS) onto CdTe QD-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 (Fe3O4@SiO2/CdTe) surface through biorecognition between the aptamer and complementary DNAs, where PbS QDs acted as external signal labels and CdTe QDs acted as internal reference labels. In the presence of AFB1, the aptamer connected to SiO2@PbS preferred to form an aptamer/AFB1 complex, which brought about the separation of SiO2@PbS linked with the CdTe QDs; with the addition of more AFB1 to the solution, the amount of SiO2@PbS present on the Fe3O4@SiO2/CdTe surface reduced. After several steps of endonuclease cleavage, magnetic separation, and dissolution with acid, the square wave voltammetry signals of Pb2+ and Cd2+ maintained an inverse relationship with the target content based on the SWV stripping measurements; the proposed method had the wide linear range of 5 pg mL-1-50 ng mL-1 and the determination limit of 4.5 pg mL-1 (S/N = 3) and was applied for the detection of AFB1 in peanuts. The proposed aptasensor has an important practical significance for the development of food safety.

Aluminum industry has been producing more than a century of history. Aluminum is a light metal which is widely used in industrial applications. Occupational aluminum workers are an important source for high exposure Al population. With the world's demand for aluminum and the increasing production, between 2007 and 2016, primary Al production in China increased by 251% which shows that a growing number of workers are being exposed to Al. Occupational aluminum exposure to the health of the population has become increasingly prominent. Al is a well-established neurotoxicant and is suspected to be linked with various neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and MCI. Studies on workers exposed to aluminum have revealed disturbances in cognitive function. This chapter reviews the relationship between occupational exposure to aluminum and cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological stress in chronic heart failure (CHF) is associated with systemic neurohormonal and immune system responses and increased mortality. Autophagy refers to the biological process of degradation and recycling of dysfunctional cellular components. We investigated the role of psychological stress on autophagy function in CHF mice. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice underwent transverse aortic constriction, with or without combined acoustic and restraint stress, and cardiac function was assessed by echocardiography analysis. Serum corticosterone and angiotensin II (Ang II) were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Autophagy and oxidative stress were measured with immunohistochemistry and quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and chloroquine and rapamycin were used to detect autophagy flux. In vivo, cardiomyocytes were cultured with or without Ang II or N-acetylcysteine, and autophagy and oxidative stress were also detected. RESULTS: A 1-week stress exposure significantly increased serum levels of corticosterone and Ang II (p = .000), increased levels of oxidative stress, induced overt heart failure, and increased mortality (p = .002). Furthermore, stress exposure unregulated messenger RNA expression of Bcl-2-interacting coiled-coil protein 1 (10.891 [3.029] versus 4.754 [1.713], p = .001), cysteine-rich domain containing beclin-1 interacting (6.403 [1.813] versus 3.653 [0.441], p = .006), and autophagy 7 (111.696 [4.049] versus 6.189 [1.931], p = .017), increased expression of autophagosomal, and decreased clearance of autophagosomes. In vitro, Ang II significantly increased autophagy flux in cultured cardiomyocytes, which could be partly inhibited by N-acetylcysteine. CONCLUSIONS: Psychological stress may contribute to the development of CHF by enhancing heart oxidative stress and impairing autophagy flux.
