BACKGROUND: To investigate the correlation between testicular fat content (TFC) and sex hormone levels in patients with cryptorchidism and its value in assessing postsurgical testicular function. METHODS: Pelvic MRI with the mDIXON Quant sequence was performed on 23 cryptorchidism patients and 15 normal controls. The TFC before and after surgery was measured and compared. The correlations between cryptorchid TFC and testosterone (TSTO), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and estradiol (E2) levels were analyzed, as was the specificity of TFC and each hormone for assessing testicular function after surgery. RESULTS: The preoperative cryptorchid TFC (3.06% ± 0.74) was higher than that of the normal controls (1.36% ± 0.49). TSTO was negatively correlated with the cryptorchid TFC (r = -0.698), while FSH and E2 were positively associated with the cryptorchid TFC (r = 0.658, 0.676). Cryptorchid TFC after surgery (2.01% ± 0.55) was lower than the preoperative TFC, but hormone levels were not significantly different. The TFC after surgery (0.864) had a larger AUC value than did TSTO (0.639), FSH (0.597), and E2 (0.586). CONCLUSION: Noninvasive quantification of cryptorchid TFC using the mDIXON Quant sequence is more specific than hormone levels for assessing postsurgical changes in testicular function. IMPACT: The cryptorchid testicular fat content is significantly higher than the normal testicular fat content. Cryptorchid testicular fat content is negatively correlated with presurgical serum TSTO levels and positively correlated with presurgical FSH and E2 levels. Pre- and postoperative changes in cryptorchid testicular fat content change are more sensitive than changes in TSTO, FSH, or E2 levels. Noninvasive cryptorchid testicular fat content quantified by the mDIXON Quant sequence is more specific than serum TSTO, FSH, and E2 levels for assessing changes in testicular function after cryptorchidism surgery.

Background: Influence of iguratimod on bone mineral density (BMD) and biomarkers of bone metabolism in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains not determined. Accordingly, a meta-analysis was performed for systematical evaluation. Methods: Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were retrieved by searching of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane's Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases. A random-effect model was used to pool the results. Results: In total, 24 RCTs including 2439 patients with RA contributed to the meta-analysis. Pooled results showed that compared to methotrexate alone, additional use of iguratimod 25 mg Bid for 12∼24 weeks significantly improved lumbar-spine BMD (mean difference [MD]: 0.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.04 to 0.20, p=0.002, I 2 = 39%) in patients with RA. Moreover, treatment with iguratimod was associated with increased serum osteoprotegerin (MD: 180.36 pg/ml, 95% CI: 122.52 to 238.20, p < 0.001, I 2 = 48%), and decreased serum receptor activator for nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (MD: -10.65 pmol/l, 95% CI: -15.59 to -5.72, p < 0.001, I 2 = 53%). In addition, iguratimod was associated with increased bone formation markers such as the serum N-terminal middle molecular fragment of osteocalcin (MD: 4.23 ng/ml, 95% CI: 3.74 to 4.71, p < 0.001, I 2 = 35%) and total procollagen type I amino-terminal propeptide (MD: 9.10 ng/ml, 95% CI: 7.39 to 10.80, p < 0.001, I 2 = 86%), but decreased the bone resorption marker such as serum ß-C terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type 1 collagen (MD: -0.18 pg/ml, 95% CI: -0.21 to -0.14, p < 0.001, I 2 = 70%). Conclusions: Iguratimod could prevent the bone loss and improve the bone metabolism in patients with RA.

A novel Microcystis bloom caused by Microcystis densa has occurred in a typical subtropical reservoir every spring and summer since 2012, and it has caused several ecological and economic losses. To determine the environmental factors that influence the growth and physiological characteristics of M. densa, we investigated the variations in physicochemical factors and M. densa cell density from 2007 to 2017. The results showed that the urea-N concentration increased significantly (from 0.02 ± 0.00-0.20 ± 0.01 mg N l-1), whereas other factors did not vary significantly. NO3--N and urea-N concentrations were higher than the NH4+-N concentration during the M. densa bloom. The nitrogen composition changed, and urea-N and NO3--N became a major nitrogen sources in the reservoir. Water temperature and increased urea-N concentrations were the primary factors that influenced variations in M. densa cell density (45.5%, p < 0.05). Laboratory experiments demonstrated that M. densa cultured with urea-N exhibited a higher maximum cell density (9.8 ± 0.5 × 108 cells l-1), more cellular pigments for photosynthesis (chlorophyll a and phycocyanin) and photoprotection (carotenoid), and more proteins than those cultured with NH4+-N and NO3--N. These results suggested that M. densa cultured with urea-N exhibited preferable growth and physiological conditions. Moreover, M. densa exhibited an increased maximum specific uptake rate (0.93 pg N cell-1 h-1) and reduced half-saturation constant (0.03 mg N l-1) for urea-N compared with NH4+-N and NO3--N, suggesting that M. densa preferred urea-N as its major nitrogen source. These results collectively indicated that the increasing urea-N concentration was beneficial for the growth and physiological conditions of M. densa. This study provided ten years of field data and detailed physiological information supporting the critical effect of urea-N on the growth of a novel bloom species M. densa. These findings helped to reveal the mechanism of M. densa bloom formation from the perspective of dissolved organic nitrogen.

The strapdown gravimetry system uses the combination of an Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) and a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to measure the Earth's gravity field. Due to limited accuracies of IMU and GNSS, early strapdown gravimetry systems were more often used in airborne surveys, but less used in marine surveys. We developed a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS), the Sea-Air Gravimeter-2Marine (SAG-2M), using novel IMU components, whose accuracy was further improved with the application of Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and enhanced algorithm, making it possible to be used in marine gravity survey. The testing results of the SAG-2M were compared to those of the Lacoste and Romberg S-129 gravimeter on the same ship in the South China Sea basin. The cruise lasted for 50 days, during which 134 effective gravity profiles were measured, resulting in 174 crossover points. The results showed that, for the SAG-2M, the root mean square (RMS) crossover points were 1.35 mGal before difference adjustment and 0.69 mGal after difference adjustment; for the S-129 gravimeter, they were 5.62 mGal and 0.95 mGal, correspondingly. In calm sea conditions, the results of the two systems were relatively consistent at all wavelengths. However, in rough sea conditions, since the SAG-2M was not affected by the cross-coupling effect, its data demonstrated less high-frequency jump. A physical platform adopted in SAG-2M can further make the transition data effective when the ship is turning around. Therefore, SAG-2M was able to improve the proportion of valid data and the efficiency of data post-processing for measurements taken during the cruise. The testing results indicate that in terms of accuracy and efficiency in the marine gravity survey, SAG-2M is better than S-129. In addition, as the miniaturization and precision of inertial components are developing continuously, SAG-2M also shows great potential in miniaturization.

Astringency is one of the most important components of fruit oral sensory quality. Astringency mainly comes from tannins and other polyphenolic compounds and causes the drying, roughening and puckering of the mouth epithelia attributed to the interaction between tannins and salivary proteins. There is growing interest in the study of fruit astringency because of the healthy properties of astringent substances found in fruit, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antiallergenic, hepatoprotective, vasodilating and antithrombotic activities. This review will focus mainly on the relationship between tannin structure and the astringency sensation as well as the biosynthetic pathways of astringent substances in fruit and their regulatory mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Chronic total coronary occlusion (CTO) is an extremely hazardous condition that leads to various clinical phenomena and complications and results in social and economic burdens. Hyperuricemia (HU) is often associated with atherosclerosis. Few studies, however, have investigated the risk of CTO in individuals with HU and the role of traditional cardiovascular risk factors in this setting. METHODS: A cohort of 1245 individuals without chronic kidney disease from southwest China who underwent coronary angiography between February 2018 and June 2021 were enrolled. CTO was defined as a total occlusion of any coronary artery or arteries for more than 3 months. HU was defined as a serum uric acid level of ≥420 µmol/L in men and ≥360 µmol/L in women. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models and subgroup analyses were applied to assess the relationship between HU and CTO. RESULTS: After adjustment, HU was noted to be associated with a 1.47-fold increase in the risk of CTO [odds ratio (OR), 1.47; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06-2.58; P = 0.026]. As a continuous variable, uric acid was an independent predictor of CTO (OR, 1.002; 95% CI, 1.001-1.004; P = 0.047). Subgroup analyses showed that the risk of CTO was higher among individuals under 65 years of age (OR, 2.77; 95% CI, 1.3-5.89), nonobese individuals (OR, 1.9; 95% CI, 1.16-3.1), and those with dyslipidemia (OR, 1.8; 95% CI, 1.04-3.11), while sex, smoking, hypertension, and diabetes did not show similar effects. Interaction analyses revealed no interaction among subgroups. CONCLUSION: Among individuals residing in southwest China, HU was associated with an increased risk of CTO in non-CKD individuals, especially those under 65 years of age and nonobese and dyslipidemic individuals.

BACKGROUND: Preschooling is a critical time for intervention in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); thus, we analyzed brain tissue component volumes (BTCVs) and clinical indicators in preschool children with ASD to identify new biomarkers for early screening. METHODS: Eighty preschool children (3-6 years) with ASD were retrospectively included. The whole-brain myelin content (MyC), white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and non-WM/GM/MyC/CSF brain component volumes were obtained using synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI). Clinical data, such as intelligence scores, autism diagnostic observation schedule-calibrated severity scores, age at first production of single words (AFSW), age at first production of phrases (AFP), and age at walking onset (AWO), were also collected. The correlation between the BTCV and clinical data was evaluated, and the effect of BTCVs on clinical data was assessed by a regression model. RESULTS: WM and GM volumes were positively correlated with intelligence scores (both P < 0.001), but WM and GM did not affect intelligence scores (P = 0.116, P = 0.290). AWO was positively correlated with AFSW and AFP (both P < 0.001). The multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that MyC, AFSW, AFP, and AWO were significantly different (P = 0.005, P < 0.001, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed positive correlations between WM and GM volumes and intelligence scores. Whole-brain MyC affected AFSW, AFP, and AWO in preschool children with ASD. Noninvasive quantification of BTCVs via SyMRI revealed a new visualizable and quantifiable biomarker (abnormal MyC) for early ASD screening in preschool children.

Objectives: To quantitatively measure the T1 value, T2 value, proton density (PD) value, and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in young and middle-aged primary insomnia (PI) patients, and analyze the correlations between relaxation times, PD, and CBF to explore potential brain changes. Methods: Cranial magnetic resonance (MR) images of 44 PI patients and 30 healthy subjects were prospectively collected for analysis. The T1, T2, PD, and CBF values of the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe were independently measured using three-dimensional arterial spin labeling (3D-ASL), synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (syMRI) and a whole-brain automatic segmentation method. The differences of these imaging indices were compared between PI patients and healthy subjects. Follow-up MR images were obtained from PI patients after 6 months to compare with pre-treatment images. The Wilcoxon signed rank test and Spearman rank were used for statistical analysis. Results: Bilateral CBF asymmetry was observed in 38 patients, with significant differences in both the T2 value and CBF between the four lobes of the brain (p < 0.01). However, no significant difference was found in the T1 and PD values between the bilateral lobes. A negative correlation was found between CBF and T2 values in the right four lobes of patients with primary insomnia (PI). During follow-up examinations, five PI patients showed a disappearance of insomnia symptoms and a decrease in CBF in both brain lobes. Conclusion: Insomnia symptoms may be associated with high CBF, and most PI patients have higher CBF and lower T2 values in the right cerebral hemispheres. The right hemisphere appears to play a critical role in the pathophysiology of PI. The 3D-ASL and syMRI technologies can provide a quantitative imaging basis for investigating the brain conditions and changes in young and middle-aged PI patients.

Digital transformation (DT) has been a key way for pharmaceutical companies to enhance innovation and R&D capabilities, improve product quality, reduce costs, and create competitive advantages. The external environment factors and the internal conditions' factors are the main factors affecting the DT of pharmaceutical companies. This research aimed to probe the effects of the external environment factors, the internal conditions' factors, firm size, and control variables on the DT of pharmaceutical companies based on synergetics. Purposive sampling and snowball sampling were used in this research. In addition, this research collected 395 valid data from Chinese pharmaceutical companies through online questionnaires. This research used quantitative analysis, and SPSS and Amos software were applied to data processing analysis. The results of structural equation modelling (SEM) and regression analysis showed that the external environment factors and the internal conditions' factors had a significantly positive correlation with the DT of pharmaceutical companies, and the effects of the internal conditions on the DT of pharmaceutical companies were greater than that of the external environment. In addition, firm size positively moderated the relationship between the external environment, internal conditions, and the DT of pharmaceutical companies. The results of this research not only can provide theoretical reference for scholars but also put forward implementation suggestions of DT for Chinese pharmaceutical company managers.

Objective: This study explored the relationship between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution and frailty status in older adults. Methods: A total of 3,586 participants, 65 years of age and older, with complete data were evaluated. All received a complete frailty assessment and completed a TCM geriatric constitution questionnaire. Baseline characteristics and demographic information were collected. The relationship between the TCM constitution and frailty was evaluated by binary regression analysis. The consistency of the result was tested by multivariate linear regression. Results: The average prevalence of frailty among older adult participants was 12.5%. The three most prevalent biased constitutions in the frail older adult participants were phlegm dampness 140 (31.3%), Yin deficiency 77 (17.2%), and Yang deficiency 47 (10.5%). Univariate analysis showed that TCM constitution significantly correlated with frailty. After adjusting for potential confounders, binary logistic regression found a significant correlation between biased constitutions and frailty, including Qi stagnation (odds ratio (OR) = 3.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.94-6.36)), Qi deficiency ((OR = 3.23, (95% CI: 1.76-5.94)), Yang deficiency ((OR = 2.37, (95% CI: 1.50-3.74)), phlegm dampness ((OR = 1.75, (95% CI: 1.24-2.48)), and Yin deficiency ((OR = 1.70, (95% CI: 1.15-2.50)). Results of multiple linear regression were consistent. Conclusions: TCM constitution was significantly associated with frailty status in older adults, and the distribution was different. Compared with a neutral constitution, older adults with Qi stagnation, Qi deficiency, Yang deficiency, phlegm dampness, and Yin deficiency were more likely to experience frailty.

An emerging disease in farmed yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) causing massive mortality broke out in 2020 in Hubei, China. Histopathological examination indicated significant changes in kidneys and spleens of diseased fish. Electron microscopy revealed large numbers of viral particles in the kidneys and spleens. These particles were spherical with a diameter of approximately 35 nm. By using RNA sequencing and rapid identification of cDNA ends, the full nucleotide sequence of the virus was identified. The viral genome comprises 7,432 bp and contains three open reading frames sharing no nucleotide sequence similarity with other viruses; however, the amino acid sequence partially matched that of the nonstructural (NS) proteins from viruses in the order Picornavirales. Combined with the phylogenetic analysis, the conserved amino acid motifs and the domains of the viral genome predict a genome order typical of a calicivirus. Therefore, this virus was tentatively named yellow catfish calicivirus (YcCV). Cell culture showed that YcCV could cause a cytopathic effect in the channel catfish kidney cell line (CCK) at early passages. In artificial infection, this virus could infect healthy yellow catfish and led to clinical symptoms similar to those that occurred naturally. In situ hybridization analysis detected positive signals of the virus in kidney, spleen, liver, heart, and gill tissues of diseased fish. This study represents the first report of calicivirus infection in yellow catfish and provides a solid basis for future studies on the control of this viral disease. IMPORTANCE Caliciviruses are rapidly evolving viruses that cause pandemic outbreaks associated with significant morbidity and mortality globally. A novel calicivirus identified from yellow catfish also causes substantial mortality. Using an RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) method, the full nucleotide sequence was identified and characterized, and this virus was tentatively named yellow catfish calicivirus (YcCV). A nucleotide sequence similarity search found no match with other viruses, and an amino acid sequence comparison indicated approximately 23.3% amino acid homology with the viruses in the order Picornavirales. These findings may represent a new avenue to explain virus evolution and suggest a need to further study the pathogenesis of calicivirus and characterize possible interactions among interspecific viruses in the aquaculture environment.

Introduction: Health literacy (HL) has been concerned a key factor for determining the use of health information and promoting health. The study aimed to explore the relationship between different health literacy types and health promoting lifestyle (HPL) in different health literacy population. Methods: The survey analyzed a sample of 16,921 community residents in Shenzhen. The Chinese Citizen Health Literacy Questionnaire and health-promoting lifestyle profile II (HPLP- II) were used to assess health literacy and health promoting lifestyle. Results: Participants were divided into different populations based on the correlation between HL and HPL. The low-HL and medium-HL populations were judged to lack health literacy, and demographic characteristics were significantly different between different HPL levels in low-HL and medium-HL populations. There were 6 types of HL, and health information literacy (ß = 0.08, P < 0.001) and chronic disease literacy (ß = 0.08, P < 0.001) positively predicted HPL in the low-HL population. In the medium-HL population, the results of reward and punishment analysis showed that health information was a basic factor, chronic disease was performance factor, medical care was a motivating factor for HPL; there were 6 dimensions of HPL, and health responsibility (HR), stress management (SM) and physical activity (PA) were not significantly different in medium-HL population. The results of regression analysis showed that HR and PA had a great impact on HPL (HR: ß = 0.193, PA: ß =0.179, ß for other dimensions was 0.186, 0.176, 0.171, 0.164), but the HR and PA standardized scores were lowest in the HPL dimensions (HR: 69.42, PA: 68.5, lower than other dimensions), so it may be HR and PA that cause HPL unchanged between groups in the medium-HL population. Conclusions: Different HL levels have different relationships with HPL, and different HL types have different effects on HPL. Shenzhen community residents need to improve their HL, and they have great potentials for further progress to improve the population health. Public health policy makers need to consider formulating different policies for people with different HL levels.

Purpose: To assess abdominal fat deposition and lumbar vertebra with iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares estimation (IDEAL-IQ) and investigate their correlation with menopausal status. Materials and Methods: Two hundred forty women who underwent routine abdominal MRI and IDEAL-IQ between January 2016 and April 2021 were divided into two cohorts (first cohort: 120 pre- or postmenopausal women with severe fatty livers or without fatty livers; second cohort: 120 pre- or postmenopausal women who were obese or normal weight). The fat fraction (FF) values of the liver (FFliver) and lumbar vertebra (FFlumbar) in the first group and the FF values of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) (FFSAT) and FFlumbar in the second group were measured and compared using IDEAL-IQ. Results: Two hundred forty women were evaluated. FFlumbar was significantly higher in both pre- and postmenopausal women with severe fatty liver than in patients without fatty livers (premenopausal women: p < 0.001, postmenopausal women: p < 0.001). No significant difference in the FFlumbar was observed between obese patients and normal-weight patients among pre- and postmenopausal women (premenopausal women: p = 0.113, postmenopausal women: p = 0.092). Significantly greater lumbar fat deposition was observed in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women with or without fatty liver and obesity (p < 0.001 for each group). A high correlation was detected between FFliver and FFlumbar in women with severe fatty liver (premenopausal women: r=0.76, p<0.01; postmenopausal women: r=0.82, p<0.01). Conclusion: Fat deposition in the vertebral marrow was significantly associated with liver fat deposition in postmenopausal women.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease characterized by infiltration of IgG4+ plasma cells that can simulate a tumor manifesting as a tumor-like mass. This disease involves the pancreas, biliary tract, kidneys, salivary glands, lymph nodes, aorta, and retroperitoneum amongst other organs. However, testicular involvement is a rare entity in this disease. The treatment of testicular involvement in IgG4-RD is currently controversial. We present the case of a 65-year-old man with swelling and pain in his right scrotum three months ago. On examination, a mobile mass of approximately 2 cm in diameter was found in the right scrotum. Serological tests showed elevated levels of IgG4 and negative for tumor markers. Enhanced computed tomography of the scrotum showed a nodular hyperdense shadow with a diameter of approximately 23 mm on the right epididymis. Pathological biopsy of the right epididymis showed infiltration of plasma cells, lymphocytes, and a few neutrophils. IgG4+ plasma cells stained positive, with an IgG4/IgG ratio of more than 40% and more than 30 IgG4+ plasma cells per high-power field. A diagnosis of IgG4-RD involving the testicles was made. Prednisone 30 mg/d was given for three weeks. No scrotum swelling or pain was observed at the follow-up after six months. IgG4-related disease should be considered whenever a mass-like lesion with typical histomorphologic features involving multiple organs/anatomical sites is encountered. The testicles are an important male reproductive organ, especially for young male patients with fertility requirements. For patients with IgG4-RD testicular involvement, surgical or medical treatment requires further study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of Anbainuo (ABN) plus methotrexate (MTX) vs. conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (cDMARDs) in Chinese rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. METHODS: A total of 90 RA patients who underwent ABN + MTX [assigned as ABN + MTX group (n=47)] or cDMARDs [assigned as control group (n=43)] treatment were analyzed. Disease activity was assessed at baseline (M0), 3rd month (M3), 6th month (M6), and 12th month (M12) after treatment. Drug, other medical, indirect, and total costs were calculated. Then, pharmacoeconomic analyses were performed with the threshold of cost-effectiveness set as 3 times of the mean gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in China during the study period. RESULTS: Treatment response rate was similar between the 2 groups, while disease remission and low disease activity (LDA) rates were increased in the ABN + MTX group compared to control group. Drug cost, other medical costs, and total cost were higher in the ABN + MTX group than control group, while indirect cost was similar between the 2 groups. Meanwhile, the quality-adjusted life-years (QALY) in ABN + MTX group and control group were 0.72 and 0.48 years, respectively. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICER) of ABN + MTX group compared to control group among the entire participant cohort, moderate-disease-activity participants, and severe-disease-activity participants were ¥135,486.7, ¥146,450.4, and ¥124,987.2/QALY, respectively, which were all below the cost-effectiveness threshold. Further sensitivity analyses revealed that the cost-effectiveness of ABN + MTX vs. cDMARDs was relatively robust, while among all the indexes, ABN price and Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI) score change for the ABN + MTX group affected ICER most. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with ABN + MTX offers acceptable cost-effectiveness compared to cDMARDs treatment in Chinese RA patients.

PURPOSE: To quantitatively investigate the correlation between liver fat content and hepatic perfusion disorders (HPD) after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for liver cancer using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-determined proton density fat fraction (PDFF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 150 liver cancer patients underwent liver MRI examination within one month after RFA and at four months after RFA. According to the liver fat content, they were divided into non-, mild, moderate, and severe fatty liver groups. The liver fat content and hepatic perfusion disorders were determined using PDFF images and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI images. The relationship between the liver fat content and HPD was investigated. RESULTS: At the first postoperative MRI examination, the proportion of patients in the nonfatty liver group with hyperperfused foci (11.11%) was significantly lower than that in the mild (30.00%), moderate (42.86%), and severe fatty liver (56.67%) groups (p < 0.05), whereas the proportions of patients with hypoperfused foci (6.67%, 7.5%, 5.71%, and 6.67%, respectively) were not significantly different among the four groups (p > 0.05). In the nonfatty liver group, the liver fat content was not correlated with hyperperfusion abnormalities or hypoperfusion abnormalities. By contrast, in the three fatty liver groups, the liver fat content was correlated with hyperperfusion abnormalities but was not correlated with hypoperfusion abnormalities. At the second postoperative MRI examination, six patients in the nonfatty liver group were diagnosed with fatty liver, including two patients with newly developed hyperperfusion abnormalities and one patient whose hypoperfusion abnormality remained the same as it was in the first postoperative MRI examination. CONCLUSION: There was a high correlation between the liver fat content and hyperperfusion abnormalities after RFA for liver cancer. The higher the liver fat content was, the higher the was risk of hyperperfusion abnormalities. However, there was little correlation between liver fat content and hypoperfusion abnormalities, and the increase in postoperative liver fat content did not induce or alter the presence of hypoperfused foci.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of the dietary supplementation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae YFI-SC2 on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, immune parameters, intestinal microbiota, and disease resistance of crayfish (Procambarus clarkia). Crayfish were randomly assigned to six different boxes and two different groups in triplicate. The control group received a basal diet and the treatment group received a diet containing S. cerevisiae at 107 CFU/g. After feeding for 28 days, crayfish of the treatment group exhibited a significantly better weight gain ratio (WGR) and a specific growth rate (SGR) (p < 0.05) than crayfish of the control group. Compared to the treatment group, the control group intestines showed an oedema connective tissue layer and a weak muscle layer. For immune-related genes, Crustin2 expression was similar between the groups, whereas Lysozyme and prophenoloxidase from treatment group expression levels were upregulated significantly (p < 0.05) after 14 and 28 days of feeding. Prophenoloxidase showed the highest expression, with 10.5- and 8.2-fold higher expression than in the control group at 14 and 28 days, respectively. The intestinal microbiota community structure was markedly different between the two groups. After 14 and 28 days of feeding, the relative abundance of Cetobacterium and Lactobacillus increased, whereas Citrobacter and Bacteroides decreased in the treatment group compared with that of the control group. The challenge test showed that crayfish of the treatment group had a significantly enhanced resistance against Citrobacter freundii (p < 0.05). Our results suggest that a S. cerevisiae-containing diet positively influenced the health status, immune parameters, intestinal microbiota composition, and disease resistance of crayfish.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine fat/water signal ratios using the mDIXON Quant sequence, quantitatively assess fat infiltration in the penis, and explore its possible relationship with penile hardness and erectile dysfunction. METHODS: Routine pelvic MRI with the mDIXON Quant sequence was performed in 62 subjects, including 22 people in the normal group, 20 people in the normal erectile hardness group, and 20 people in the erectile dysfunction (ED) group. The fat/water signal ratio in the penis was measured using the mDIXON Quant sequence. Shear wave elastography was used to evaluate the hardness of the corpus cavernosa of the penis. RESULTS: The fat/water signal ratio of the corpus spongiosum was significantly lower than that of the corpus cavernosa in the normal group (p = 0.03) and ED group (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in the fat/water signal ratios between the normal group and the normal erectile hardness group. Fat infiltration was significantly lower, and erectile hardness was significantly higher in the normal erectile hardness group than in the ED group, and the fat infiltration in the left and right corpus cavernosa was inversely proportional to the erectile hardness of the penis. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that mDIXON Quant can be used as a non-invasive, quantitative, and objective method for evaluating penile fat infiltration. This method could help diagnose penile fat infiltration in patients with erectile dysfunction and varying body mass indexes. Our results could also allow for a more accurate diagnosis and monitoring of erectile hardness function by quantitatively measuring penile fat infiltration. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: (1) The proton density fat fraction technology is a new tool for the objective, quantitative and non-invasive evaluation of penile fat infiltration. (2) The quantitative measurement of fat infiltration in the corpora cavernosa might help diagnose and monitor penile erection hardness and its function more accurately.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of a major complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and a leading cause of blindness. Evidence of animal study has shown that it is not only a microvasucular lesion of the eye, but also a neurodegeneration disease of the visual system. However, the in vivo imaging evidence of axonal degeneration in the diabetic optic nerve is scarce. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) technique has been proved to be an effective tool to track the integrity of the nerve fibers in the central nervous system. In this study, type 1 diabetes was induced by intraperitoneally injecting a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ) into Sprague-Dawley rats. DTI combined with histological assessments was carried out on the optic nerve to clarify the microstructural alterations underlying DTI indices changes at 4 weeks (4 w), 8 weeks (8 w) and 12 weeks (12 w) after STZ induction. The retinal changes were analyzed by pathological evaluations at 4 weeks (4 w) and 12 weeks (12 w) after STZ induction. DTI results showed significantly decreased mean diffusivity (MD) and axial diffusivity (Da) in diabetic optic nerve compared to controls at 12 w. Atrophy in diabetic nerves was monitored by high resolution T2-weighted images. Axonal degeneration without myelin loss of the optic nerve was confirmed by histological examination. Moreover, there are positive correlations between decreased diffusivities (MD and Da) in the optic nerve and reduced total axolemmal area. The diabetic rats showed intense glial activity since 4 w and thinning of the thickness in inner plexiform layer and nerve fiber layer at 12 w in the retina. In conclusion, DTI could in vivo monitor the progression of optic nerve degeneration in diabetes and the findings in our study would help supply axonal protection for DR in preclinical practice.
